uly is a good time to kick back, take a vacation and enjoy some well-deserved time off. And who could blame you? It seems as though this community just never stops with new opportunities, new challenges and new dynamics. It just comes with the territory when you live in a place like Bismarck-Mandan that’s growing. Rest assured the Chamber EDC is on top of those new developments. For instance, the Legislative Management Committee met earlier this summer to consider what resolutions to adopt for further study during the 2019 – 2021 Interim. Of particular note to the Chamber EDC was HB 1474; a study to identify “options for replacing revenue generated by special assessments with revenue from an alternative local funding source.” One of our priorities during this past Legislative Session was passage of legislation that would allow us to ask voter approval of a street utility tax; a monthly charge on your water / utility bill which would generate revenue in lieu of special assessments for street maintenance projects. While that study will help us address challenges in infrastructure funding, we’re also working to address challenges in workforce development. One specific way is by engaging area educators as part of E2: Educators Experience. Each year, this program takes approximately 20 area educators and places them in a series of half-day workshops where they learn what skills employers in certain industries are looking for. The idea is that those educators will take those lessons with them back into the classroom and help inform their students. While we work to address some of our community’s challenges, we’re working to spotlight some of our opportunities as well. For instance, this month’s Connection features a number of local entrepreneurs who have experienced success right here in Bismarck-Mandan. It’s both encouraging and inspiring to see what our residents are capable of and the opportunities that their success presents for the entire community. Who knows, maybe the next Amazon or Uber is among that group? And if so, our job as the community’s leader in economic development is to support them and if they don’t need anything from us, be smart enough to get out of the way. So as you can see, it’s been a busy summer here at the Chamber EDC and that’s just the way we like it. THE ENTREPRENEURS’ ROUNDTABLE By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk
Entrepreneurship is thriving on the prairie. From events like 1 Million Cups and Makewell to accolades like being named No. 2 Best place for Women Entrepreneurs by GoodCall.com and Top 50 Places for Small Business Startups by CNN Money, everything points to fertile entrepreneurial soil in Bismarck-Mandan.
How would you describe your business in 30 words or less? Norton: Our business provides services such as injectables, skin care, facials, permanent makeup, eyelash extensions, advanced education, and we’re consultants in the beauty industry.
Connection magazine posed the same set of questions to three entrepreneurs in order to create an entrepreneurs’ roundtable. The entrepreneurs interviewed include Allan Miller, President of Anyleaks, Inc.; Gina Norton, Co-owner of The Rejuvenation Place; and Collin Kemmesat, General Manager of 701 Cycle and Sport

CONNECTION | CHAMBER EDC FEATURE What inspired you to start your business? Miller: I grew up in a small town, Flasher... I grew up without a silver spoon by any stretch of the imagination, which drove me considerably. I didn’t go to college. A hailstorm in 2001 kind of changed the direction of my life, and that’s what brought me into construction. I was always athletic and very competitive. In construction, a lot of guys were paid by piecework, meaning you got paid on what you got done for the day. For a competitive guy, that works out well...

I grew up always wanting more. You either have it in your or you don’t. You either want it or you don’t. You’re either adverse to risk or you’re not. Being an entrepreneur, you can’t be scared of failure. Norton: I’ve been in the beauty industry all of my life. My parents worked in the beauty industry when I was growing up. I naturally developed a passion for skin ... I wanted to start a business but be involved with my children. I would have never done it any other way. I feel like I’m training my kids every day on good work ethic. They bring to me so many fresh ideas in social media, in the industry that I would have never found, because a lot of times I’m busy doing treatments. They are diving into the industry and finding the latest and greatest trends that we can bring here.
Kemmesat: My dad started (the business) in 2003 as a side hobby shop. He was really into cycling. He saw the need for a bike shop in Bismarck. We have moved between four locations to our current location and have grown and expanded exponentially since then.

CHAMBER EDC FEATURE | CONNECTION My family has been a huge help for Anyleaks from lending money to my mom working for me consistently from the beginning, from working out of her home to watching my kids. I’ve learned that Cody is one of the hardest workers has ever met. I’ve learned that my wife does not like when I take risks and start new businesses. I’ve learned that I really like being an entrepreneur. I enjoy it immensely. Kemmesat: We’ve learned a lot over the years. We’ve learned everything from different ways of ordering product, to projecting things to helping the community, to being more beneficial to the community. We’re still learning. Every year we make ourselves that much better, refine ourselves that much more and better serve the customer in any sense we can.

What have you learned since you founded your business? Norton: We decided not to do every service. We decided not to specialize every single thing. With injectables like a chin augmentation with filler, a rhinoplasty with filler, those are high risk procedures. We refer out for those. We wanted to specialize in lips, cheeks, and the neurotoxins such as Botox. As we learn and perfect services, then we launch them. Until we have something perfected, we don’t offer it. Miller: I knew a lot about the business before I had started because I had been in it. As far as ownership, I hated that I didn’t have the money and it was hard to get. Now that I have the experience, people give money to us easily. I learned that people treat you different when you’re a business owner. I’ve learned it’s hard to find quality employees consistently. I’ve learned my family has consistently helped me along the way.

What are your key milestones since founding your business? Norton: This is my 38th year doing skin care. The biggest compliment is that with my 1-year degree to be a cosmetologist, I would have never dreamt that 3 of my 4 children would have capitalized on my industry with their college degrees and opened a business together in my industry. Growing up, my parents said, “Do not go to beauty school.” My other two sisters became doctors. I was the oldest; I was the rebel. Kemmesat: Going employee-owned was a key milestone eight years ago. It helps take liability off one person within the company itself. It also gives our employees quite a bit more caring aspects about the business. They feel like the own part of it now. They are much more worried about making sure the business is doing well and doing everything they can to make our business successful as a whole. Miller: Building this building in 2018 was a huge source of pride. Coming back to Mandan was a big thing for us. After working out of our house, we had a shop in Bismarck since 2012 to 2018. Not only building a building but coming back to Mandan was really a big deal for Cody and me. I got to build my mom a new house. My mom and dad get to retire to a new house. Cody got to build himself a new house. Being able to have 30 employees and be productive and be profitable, it’s not a milestone but it’s an accomplishment for us.
CONNECTION | CHAMBER EDC FEATURE What are your thoughts on the entrepreneurship climate of Bismarck-Mandan? Miller: I think the climate is good. I don’t think that people really understand how to take advantage of it. I think people go after businesses with their heart, or the niche that they want, but they don’t really understand how to make money. Whatever business you start has to have a need. You can have the coolest thing in the world, but if there isn’t a demand, then you don’t have that need. Don’t start a hobby, start a business. Kemmesat: I think the entrepreneurship is very high in Bismarck-Mandan. I think we have a lot of people that have that entrepreneurial spirit. I see a lot of good businesses coming in. I think there are also some markets in BismarckMandan that are extremely oversaturated. I think we’ll see those work themselves out. Norton: I believe the Bismarck-Mandan business climate is really great right now. Bismarck-Mandan has a big enough population that you can find success, but small enough that you can use word of mouth as a communication tool. I believe this community really works together to help small businesses succeed, and I’ve loved collaborating with motivated individuals and businesses.

CHAMBER EDC FEATURE | CONNECTION What’s next? Kemmesat: We opened a second location in Dickinson this spring. Bismarck is expanding like the whole state is, especially the western side of the state. We wanted to find another avenue where we could rotate inventory easier and serve another community. The west side of the state is very underserved in our market ... Our third location in Watford City is opening hopefully in the next month.
The new Anyleaks, Inc. location in Mandan, completed in 2018, was a significant accomplishment and a return to Mandan for the business.
Miller: Old 10 Bar and Grill is scheduled to open July 15. Mandan has always been the little town that couldn’t. People looked at it as a stepping stone for something to get away from. We’ve always been proud to be from Mandan. We want to be something that people want to come back to, or people don’t want to leave from. Old 10 Bar and Grill is something that we want the residents of Mandan to be proud of. Wed want Old 10 to be a landmark to some degree. We want people to bring in families and also drink beer and watch games. Norton: My goal for The Rejuvenation Place is to set a credibility standard in our industry. There is a lot of shady stuff that happens in the beauty world, and I want to educate people on the right way to treat their skin. Editor’s Note: Interviews have been edited for length and clarity.

Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within your business. A: I’m originally from Wyoming and knew I wanted to be a photographer from the age of 12. I was the photographer for my high school and college yearbooks and my degree is in photography. I am the owner and photographer for Phyne Photography, Framing and Art Gallery.

Q: Briefly tell us the history of Phyne Photography & Framing. A: I opened Phyne Photography on April 1, 1982 with a partner who retired in 1987. We started in an office space in south Mandan. In 1987, we moved to our current location on Main Street in Mandan. In 1993 we added Limited Edition Art Prints and Custom Framing with a framer on staff.
CONNECTION | MEMBER PROFILE Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Phyne Photography & Framing? A: We see an increase in our school & sports photos due to growth. We work by appointment so we can schedule accordingly during peak times. Q: What trends are taking place in your industry? A: The cross over between cameras and phones has been immense. Photography is still defined as "painting with light", no matter how many phones and/or cameras are out there, professionals need to be educated to produce quality photography. Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: The impact of Digital photography is very mainstream now. Everyone with a phone has a camera, but not everyone is a photographer. Photography is for everyone now, but a nice camera does not make one a professional photographer just as a restaurant quality oven does not make one a master chef!
Q: What does the future of Phyne Photography & Framing look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: Phyne Photography, Framing and Art Gallery is doing great! We see a bright future ahead and the industry is constantly changing to adjust to the needs of the public. Q: Phyne Photography & Framing became a member in 1983, why do you continue to renew each year? A: We believe in supporting our local businesses and we've been happy that many businesses agree with us and support us as well! Q: What should other Chamber EDC members know about Phyne Photography & Framing that may assist them? A: We have great customer service, great turnaround time and beautiful portraits. BUSINESS RETENTION EXPANSION A CHAMBER EDC PRIORITY As of this spring, Job Service North Dakota estimated that there were approximately 2,800 open jobs between Burleigh and Morton Counties. The Chamber EDC has developed a two-pronged approach to fill those jobs: 1. In the long-term, develop workforce development programming that provides area students with experiential learning opportunities in an attempt to retain them upon graduation. 2. In the short-term, conduct online talent attraction campaigns that are targeted towards talent from outside the community so they consider relocating to Bismarck-Mandan. Regarding those talent attraction campaigns (TAC), the Chamber EDC recently launched our ninth (TAC 9) and it represents somewhat of a departure from previous efforts.
Traditionally, the Chamber EDC has partnered with KK BOLD to develop and place advertisements such as the one pictured here, targeted to very specific geographies and/or occupations. However, TAC 9 will seek to spotlight Bismarck-Mandan as a place to live for anyone considering relocating. We will focus our advertisements over a certain time frame from Memorial Day through Labor Day with special ads around the July 4th holiday when former residents and other family members might be visiting the area. We will also monitor the traffic that those online advertisements generate and in response, ‘boost’ posts that have produced the most interest. And as to what media we’ll be using to run these ads, it will primarily be Google and Facebook based upon the results of prior campaigns. Going forward, the Chamber EDC plans to make talent attraction an ongoing effort led by Workforce Development Coordinator Jaime Sabot as opposed to TAC that start and stop at certain times. This is in response to a growing number of unfilled jobs and our ability to be more effective as a result of the BMDA / Chamber merger. Additionally, our ads (whether print, online or otherwise) will focus more on Bismarck-Mandan as a place to live given our unique features as opposed to simply a location for a job. Bismarck-Mandan is growing and we have the opportunities for those already living here and those who might be considering it.

Those 11 ideas were vetted, ranked and scored until four finalists were selected to present in-person to a panel of local business leaders who ultimately selected a winner to receive a generous prize package. More encouraging was the fact that of the 11 business ideas submitted, six have now launched or are in the process of launching as businesses!

ACCEPTING LEADERSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR 2019-2020 Leadership Bismarck-Mandan is now accepting applications for the Class of 2020. Up to 18 applicants will be accepted into the program where participants delve into today’s most compelling issues. Community experts create issue day sessions on topics relevant to the Bismarck-Mandan area, including: economic development, energy, agriculture, legislation, political involvement, human services, law enforcement, military, emergency services, arts, leisure, healthcare, and education. Most issue days are 1/2 day. Highlights of the program include a full day at the Capitol during the legislative session, a full day retreat, and a graduation ceremony. Following the issue days, the class will divide into groups, select a community project about which they are passionate and work to make that field project into reality.

ENERGY TRANSFER DONATES $3 MILLION FOR MANDAN IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
At a news conference on June 11, Dallas-based Energy Transfer committed to a $3 million contribution to the City of Mandan to help fund improvements at the Morton Mandan Public Library and Main Street parks that function as community gathering spaces. The $3 million donation over two years will assist with a library refresh and enhancements to the adjacent Dykshoorn and Heritage Parks.
Tentative plans include construction of a new home for the bookmobile near the library. The building may also accommodate portable equipment used for community events. Other project components may include a new library atrium, additional public restrooms, window replacements and masonry tuck-pointing. Sleepy Hollow has been a Bismarck-Mandan destination since 1990, beginning with a production of “Annie Get Your Gun”.
Sleepy Hollow evolved from a Lundberg family question: “If you had time and money, what would you do in Bismarck? And what if you didn’t have money?” With a background of growing up in Bismarck, the answers were to start a new theatre experience providing positive opportunities for our young people. NDSC HIRES FISCHER AS BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER The North Dakota Safety Council (NDSC) has hired Valerie Fischer Valerie Fischer as a part time Business Development Manager. Fischer started with the NDSC in March in a temporary capacity to assist the traffic safety department with their Alive at 25 program. Previously, Fischer worked for the N.D. Department of Public Instruction (DPI), including 16 years as the Director of Safe & Healthy Schools and seven years as Director of Adult Education. As the NDSC's Business Development Manager, she will work with the community protection and traffic safety departments to increase awareness of their services throughout the state.

OSBORN JOINS EXECUTIVE AIR Tanner Osborn joined Executive Air Taxi Corp at the Bismarck Airport as a full-time FAA Certified Flight Instructor. JOHANSEN RECEIVES ADVANCED OPTICIANRY CERTIFICATION Erik Johansen, assistant optical manager at Dakota Eye Institute, recently earned the ABOCErik Johansen AC designation from the American Board of Opticianry by passing the board’s Advanced Certification Exam. The ABOC-AC designation is earned by completing an advanced education curriculum, passing a rigorous exam and attaining several years of experience. Johansen is the only optical professional in the state of North Dakota who is certified at this level by the board.
