I
n the last edition of the Chamber Connection, Brian Ritter talked about the summer slowdown, taking time to enjoy the warm weather and all the summer activities. I, for one, don’t see a slow down at the Chamber. The Chamber Team has maintained a high level of activity in coordinating events, working a 2019 legislative agenda, building new relationships with newly elected local government officials and maintaining the daily Chamber operations. In addition to these activities, the Chamber team continues to work on the BMDA/Chamber Restructure. We have a great Chamber team and it is a lot of fun to be around such a high energy group. Just a quick update on the BMDA/Chamber restructure from the perspective of a Chamber Executive Committee member. The Chamber Executive Board and the BMDA Executive Board held a joint meeting in early July to review where we are now — and what remains in front of us in the restructuring process. There has been major progress made to date, but there are still some key elements to be completed in the next several months. One critical item is the development of bylaws for the new organization, which will be a significant step in the course of the restructure. The bylaws will include the finalization of a board format and documentation guiding policies for the new organization. On a parallel track, as Brian has stated in his weekly updates, the rebranding of the new organization is getting underway. During the rebranding process, a very deliberate effort has been and will continue to be made to engage and gather input from the membership of both organizations. I know both Executive Boards are willing to commit the time and effort to setup one successful restructured organization and I hope our membership will reach out to our board members or the Chamber staff if they have questions or comments. I am very thankful and humbled to be working with a group of business professionals that are so committed to the success of our committees and to the building of an extraordinary new organization.

LEMONADE DAY TEACHES KIDS TO WORK HARD By Cathryn Sprynczynatyk
Zander Wald wants to go to space camp. She also wants to buy a new pair of Crocs sandals. Zander, 9, and her little sister Paisley, 6, want a lot of things according to their mother, Katie Wald. “They both want to purchase a pair of Crocs with their money,” Katie Wald said. “They already each own a pair of Crocs, so I told them if they want to buy a pair of Crocs, they have to do that with their own money.” That’s why Zander joined Lemonade Day. On June 16, Bismarck-Mandan Zander Wald, 9, ran “Zander’s Out of This World Lemonade” at Cash Wise Foods hosted its second annual Lemonade on June 16 in Bismarck. Day. Lemonade Day is a curriculum based out of Lemonade Day National Headquarters in Houston. They looked at different locations where Zander could get foot traffic on a Saturday in June. Zander chose Cash Wise Foods. They examined the cost of fresh-squeezed, frozen, and powdered lemonade and searched for the best deals in town. “(Zander) started to realize it was going to be a little more work than she thought it was going to be,” Katie Wald said. “I kept telling her (Lemonade Day) was her thing, and she needed to take ahold of it and finish it.”

Zander named her stand “Zander’s Out of This World Lemonade.” She offered eight different flavors named after Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. For her tip jar, she asked customers to vote on whether or not they considered Pluto to be a planet. The Walds borrowed more than 10 containers for all of their varieties of lemonade, and all of containers had to be washed. Zander also had write thank you notes to everyone who lent her materials, at her mother’s urging. Katie Wald said Zander was frustrated by the work involved at times. “Money isn’t just as easy as you think it is,” Katie Wald said. “I had her do pretty much everything. She realized it’s a lot more work to have a little business than she thought.” All of this work brought in $399.00 total revenue to Zander’s Out of This World Lemonade. Zander had to pay back $25 to her investor — her mother Katie — for supplies purchased. She also had to pay her employee — her 6-year-old sister Paisley. This left Zander with nearly $375 in profit.

Sponsors of the Lemonade Day program also did a lot to promote Lemonade Day. MDU Resources Group and Dan’s Supermarket were the Main Squeeze sponsors of Lemonade Day. Dan’s Supermarket included a coupon in every Lemonade Day kit that gave the young entrepreneurs $5 off their lemonade supplies. MDU Resources Group invited Lemonade Day to be a part of MDU Resources STEM All-Stars night at Bismarck Larks baseball. With all of the finance and economics that goes into running a business, Lemonade Day was included as part of the Mathematics in STEM.

I think (Lemonade Day) is a great program to create future workforce for our community and for our companies,” said Cory Fong, Director of Communications and Public Affairs at MDU Resources Group. “It’s all about getting young people excited about creating their own businesses. I can’t think of a better showcase. These young people are our future engineers, our future accountants, our future employees. “(Lemonade Day) shows the Bismarck-Mandan community that it’s important to start young in building our future entrepreneurs, our future leaders. These young people are going to be our future community leaders, the future president of the Chamber of Commerce, the future president of companies like MDU Resources.” Program sponsors weren’t the only businesses getting involved in Lemonade Day. Bismarck Police Department posted on social media that their officers made a point to stop at dozens of lemonade stands across the city. Officers pulled over in their squad cars to buy lemonade and put on flashing lights to make the kids smile. Leingang said police officers were particularly impressed by one lemonade stand that wasn’t keeping any money for themselves. The kids were using all of their profits to pay for their pet’s upcoming operation. Leingang said the officers were so impressed that they gave the kids free swimming passes and bought extra lemonade. “Lemonade Day, I believe, is most important to Bismarck-Mandan because it creates a spark,” said Brian Ritter, President of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce. “It creates a spark within our youth. Yes, they can start their own business. Yes, they can be successful. Yes, this is something you can do right here in BismarckMandan.” The Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce plans to continue Lemonade Day in 2019.
“I think it’s absolutely the responsibility of the Chamber to instill that entrepreneurial spirit within the youth of the community,” Ritter said. “You never know, one participant from this program ... could be this community’s next great success story.”

MEMBER PROFILE Featuring Shannon Gangl Q: Tell us about yourself and your role within the organization. A: My name is Shannon Gangl. I own the hotel along with wife and partner, Stacy Gangl. My role is to hire the most talented leaders in the industry, set expectations, and then make sure they have all the resources they need! Q: Briefly tell us the history of Baymont Inn & Suites. A: I honestly could go on for hours regarding the history of the Baymont Inn and suites. The hotel came about after the restaurant that the owners had burned down on main street. They needed a new location and built at The new old red trail location. For many years the property was the home of the Captains Table restaurant which was the areas finest upscale dining facility. The water toys and sleeping/meeting room addition was added approximately 10 years ago. We selected a new franchise a few years ago to help us compete better against a significant growth in area hotel supply. 10 | Chamber Connection

Q: How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Baymont Inn & Suites? A: Growth of our community has impacted us differently over the years. As population grows, so does demand and high occupancy is created. That is what led to the addition we made about 10 years ago. Supply then catches up in the form of new hotels and occupancy dips. It’s the same supply/demand cycle most businesses go through in a growing and thriving community.
www.bismarckmandan.com Q: What industry trends are taking place? A: Industry trends or changes are pretty constant in the hospitality industry. Each of the many chains are continually trying to one up the others. The internet and WiFi created significant problems for properties that were built to be quiet, completely out of concrete. The original equipment was not adequate to provide reliable coverage in the beginning so we were changing equipment every time it was upgraded for quite some time. The rooms have become much more homelike and includes many extended stay options today. We are currently in a contemporary cycle with brands trying to attract today’s younger tech knowledgeable travelers. Q: Have there been any monumental changes in the industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: Our community is currently in an over abundant supply cycle. Occupancy and rates are down. The oil boom to the west was so significant that it impacted us as well. Demand will catch up but it will be a room/event buyers market for the next few years. Q: Baymont Inn & Suites became a member in 1974, why do you continue to renew each year? A: Our community is currently in an over abundant supply cycle. Occupancy and rates are down. We can also help you in Minneapolis as well. Lastly, the next time you are at a wedding or event at the hotel consider that you are standing in what was originally the swimming pool!

RESTRUCTURE PROCESS: CONTINUED EXCELLENCE IN PROGRAMMING AND EVENTS
The value proposition for a restructured BMDA and Chamber has many facets and we’ll touch on all of them over the coming months as part of this series of communications. While some of the value proposition includes things that are new or different, one thing that will not change is the quality programming and events that you’ve come to expect from both organizations.
For instance, each year the Chamber facilitates the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan program which seeks to develop local leaders who actively participate in and support community progress. Neither that program nor others such as Lemonade Day or the Outstanding Teacher of the Year will go away as a result of the restructure. The same can be said for our signature events like the Workforce Development Summit or Celebrate Bismarck-Mandan. We’re simply looking to build on them. Take for example the Economic Outlook Forum. A restructured organization is in a position to: host an event like the Economic Outlook Forum, analyze the results of the event & accompanying survey and then address or implement programming based upon those results whether they’re specific to economic development or advocacy. One organization can do all of that and that’s advantageous for not only the organization, but the entire community as well.

And while the Chamber may be better known for hosting the aforementioned events, the BMDA has also developed programming that can be strengthened by the restructure. This includes the organization’s annual Job Shadow Week where area high school and college students are encouraged to participate in two and four-hour job shadows in an effort to learn more about a specific profession. While the program has been incredibly successful in its three years of existence, the BMDA has only 240 private sector investors to whom the program is primarily marketed. By comparison, a restructured organization could have over 1,300 private sector investors to whom we could market and ultimately grow the program. In doing so, we can better address one of our membership and community’s most pressing needs. Once again, it’s important to note that by restructuring, we’re not looking to do less with the resources that we’ve been entrusted with. In fact, we’re looking to do just the opposite; take those same resources, leverage them and do even more. The examples above are just a few ways we expect to do so as a unified business development organization. As to what’s currently being done to complete the restructure, each organization has engaged independent counsel to review their bylaws in an effort to ensure proper compliance throughout the process. In addition, the organizations have developed and solicited responses to a request for proposal (RFP) for a marketing firm to develop the restructured organization’s new name, logo and brand. The Bismarck-Mandan Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence in Business and Education Committee are now accepting applications for the Student Chamber’s 2018/2019 program! Open to Juniors and Seniors in all Bismarck-Mandan high schools (private and public), the Student Chamber program is a program that aims to elevate our young adults into the professional world. This is done through a series of experiences the students go through to learn more about our community as a whole. Leadership and career development, financial literacy, and college readiness are some of the skills and education they will benefit from through this program. The students meet one day a month, for two hours out of school. The program includes six board meetings in addition to an opening and closing event. This program is an honorable activity for students to list on college applications and job resumes. The application process is simple. INDUSTRY LEADERS STEP UP TO FILL CYBERSECURITY ROLES THROUGH SUPPORT OF BSC PROGRAM
Thanks to generous donations from Great River Energy (GRE), Midco and National Information Solutions Cooperative (NISC) to the Bismarck State College (BSC) Foundation, BSC can now prepare more students to fill the predicted 1.8 million cybersecurity workforce gap. Midco has donated $100,000, and both Great River Energy and NISC have donated $50,000 to BSC’s Cybersecurity and Computer Networks Program. These donations will help BSC provide the talent desperately needed in our nation’s hospitals, refineries, technology companies, power plants and more. “Protecting our customers’ connections and data is paramount for Midco. Cyber threats continue to evolve. Our investment in [BSC] will help develop our best and brightest to stay ahead of that evolution and provide a more secure Internet for all of us,” says Jon Pederson, chief technology officer for Midco.

BSC is the higher education lead in North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum’s K-20W cyber initiative focused on “every student, every school, cyber educated.” In addition to hiring more faculty and ramping up the curriculum, in the fall of 2019, the college will implement a four-year Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Cybersecurity offered either on campus or fully online. “With BSC’s cybersecurity program, we believe that future generations will be able to protect and defend our networks and electric grid,” says John Bauer, director of North Dakota generation at Great River Energy. “BSC is proactive in understanding the industry needs. Cyber incidents on the nation’s grid and industrial control systems are increasing threats and this donation is a way to support training of our future work force.” Due to the high demand for cybersecurity education, in 2016, BSC revamped its computer information system offerings and created a cybersecurity and computer networks program. Enrollment increased significantly. In 2018, BSC’s budget was reduced due to North Dakota revenue shortfalls, making it hard for BSC to make the investments needed to grow this vital program. So BSC looked to area businesses for financial support. In particular, those businesses feeling a sense of urgency in this realm – both from a service and an employment perspective. In considering who to approach for support, BSC President Larry C. Skogen says he knew that GRE, Midco and NISC all had the visionary mindset that makes them strong partners. “The generosity shown by these three organizations will allow us to educate students who, in turn, will ensure that these industry leaders can safeguard their customers and their services from increasing cyber threats that are becoming common place in our world today,” says BSC President Larry C. Skogen.

BISMARCK TO HOST WORLD SERIES
In a little over a year, Bismarck will roll out the red carpet to welcome the top 13-15-year-old baseball talent in the country to Municipal Ballpark, Home of Dakota Community Bank and Trust Field, to participate in the 2019 Babe Ruth League 13-15 World Series. The tournament is scheduled for August 8-15. The Babe Ruth World Series is one of the largest youth sporting events in the country.

As the host community, the Bismarck Babe Ruth League will select its own 13-15 squad to compete in the event, which will also include eight regional champions from across the country and the North Dakota Babe Ruth 13-15 State Champion. The competition will begin with pool play before advancing to a single elimination bracket to determine the World Series champion. Bismarck has a rich baseball history. Thousands of Babe Ruth Baseball players have called the Municipal Ballpark their baseball field. MINNESOTA TWINS AWARD FUNDS TO VETERANS MEMORIAL BALLPARK In June, Mandan Baseball Club was awarded a 2018 Twins Fields for Kids matching grant of $5,000. The funds will be used specifically for Mandan Veterans Memorial Ballpark renovations.
The purpose of the Minnesota Twins matching grant program is to provide youth baseball and softball organizations in the Upper Midwest with funds and resources needed to promote their leagues and recruit participants, as well as train coaches, purchase equipment and administer their leagues. The funds from the matching grant will be utilized towards renovating the dugouts and wings which have not had improvements since the 1980s. Earlier in June, Mandan Park District agreed to pay $1,000,000 toward the renovation at Veterans Memorial Ballpark along with the Baseball Club’s contribution of $1,500,000. The club has raised approximately $878,000, thanks to the help of donors and is continuing to secure other sponsorship opportunities at the ballpark.

Center for Technology & Business (CTB) was recently awarded grant funding by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to open a second Women’s Business Center, which will be located in Fargo. The new center will offer assistance, training, leadership development opportunities and other resources to women on the eastern half of the state. “For the past 19 years, the ND WBC has served women across the state thanks to outstanding support from SBA and North Dakota Department of Commerce. The number of women who seek our services continues to grow so we are grateful and excited for this opportunity to expand our programming reach,” CTB Executive Director Deb Eslinger said. Deidre Hillman, director of the North Dakota Women’s Business Center, added, “We have always been a statewide entity, but with increasing demand for the services we provide, a second location will allow us to extend our resources and meet the needs of more women leaders, business owners and entrepreneurs across the state.” During the 2017 fiscal year, the Women’s Business Center program counseled and trained nearly 150,000 entrepreneurs nationwide. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, there are 9.9 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. They employ more than eight million workers, provide more than $264 billion in wages and salaries to employees, and contribute $1.4 trillion in sales to a national economy. North Dakota continues to be a leader in this movement by cultivating a positive, growth environment for women entrepreneurs and business owners. In fact, the ND WBC’s impact was recognized nationally by the SBA when the center received the 2016 Women’s Business Center of Excellence Award in the category of SBA Resource Partners. it will be distributed and its content. It’s a pretty well known that you want videos to be short on social media but there’s much more below the surface. If you are promoting the video as an ad on social media, there are limits that might cut you short. For instance, Instagram has a current video limit of 60 seconds. Now if your content calls for a longer video, the best distribution format is either on your website or youtube.
Now how does the content come into play on the length? The length has to fit the amount of information you want to give. You’re not going to be able to describe your entire business history in depth within a 15-second spot. Likewise, you’re not going to create a 5-minute video about a new dish added to the menu. If in doubt, take a look at what has been successful for other videos like yours, and how it would adapt to different distribution formats.

Q: ARE FREE CLOUD STORAGE OFFERINGS SOMETHING I SHOULD USE FOR MY BUSINESS? A: The answer is that it really depends
on what you are using it for. In certain cases, it is a fine solution. In other cases, it is a very bad idea. The first premise to remember is that if something is free, there is little to no value to it. Free also means “Use at your own risk”. In certain cases where you just need a spot to briefly store something that you don’t care if it gets published in the newspaper, it is a fine solution. If you need any type of security or encryption on the file because you don’t want that information to go to anyone but the destination, you need to use a more substantial cloud storage solution. And just because you pay for something doesn’t mean it is always good. Read the fine print about what the solution does and does not do. Also remember that most cloud storage solutions are meant to get files from location A to B. They are not designed to be long-term backup solutions which store and restore files reliably.

Jake Mellmer has been named senior director of primary care and regional Jake Mellmer medicine for the Bismarck Region of Sanford Health. In his new role, he will oversee operations for many services, including family medicine, internal medicine, dermatology, diabetes center and walk-in clinics. He will also assume regional medicine responsibilities, which includes Dickinson, Minot and Watford City clinics. Mellmer previously worked as the clinic director for family medicine clinics in Bismarck. He has been with Sanford for six years.
