It’s no secret that the Bismarck-Mandan community prides itself on the quality of life we offer to residents. Our trails, green spaces, athletic venues, downtown spaces, and recreational facilities support not only a strong quality of life, but also attract visitors from around the region. We are a hub for many things and, I’m proud to say, we are also a destination for many.

This time of year as we start to feel the nip of winter at our heels, there’s an increasing urgency to get out and enjoy fall before we’re in full-on hibernation mode. Whether it’s a football game, visiting the pumpkin patch, taking a spooky tour of Fort Abraham Lincoln, or enjoying one last cruise along the river, the programs and activities that are offered by local organizations are truly something special.

I always get a bit nostalgic as the year winds down, and I can’t help but reflect on the incredible weather we all enjoyed this past summer—which was punctuated by many of our longstanding community festivities and celebrations. While our communities on both sides of the river have a lot to be proud of, Mandan has continued to build on a storied legacy of being one of the biggest draws of the summer and this year was punctuated with the grand opening of the new rodeo arena.

It's also no secret that the Mandan Rodeo is one of the (if not THE) premier events of the summertime. In this months’ Connection, we’re excited to highlight all the great features of the new arena and how it will continue to put Mandan on the map (and top of everyone’s list) for years to come. This new facility is a great addition to our community and is yet another example of all that we can be proud of. It’s an example of what can be accomplished when we have a passionate group of residents who come together, pool resources, and advocate for something that will benefit our communities. It’s a success story that I always love to hear, and I know there are many more out there.

As I’ve said before, we have a lot to be proud of here in Bismarck-Mandan, and I’m looking forward to what we can all achieve in the years to come.

THE DALE PAHLKE RODEO ARENA: IMPACTING THE SPORT OF RODEO AND THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY

In July, the new Dale Pahlke Rodeo Arena at the Dakota Community Bank & Trust Rodeo Grounds hosted its first Mandan Rodeo Days. A dream many years in the making for the more-than-140-year-old event, the rodeo’s first year at its permanent home drew sold-out crowds and accolades from both participants and spectators, as well as a large economic impact on the community.

“Of all the things we have done in Bismarck-Mandan, I think this rodeo arena can have the most serious impact on our community,” says Dale Pahlke, Dakota Community Bank & Trust president and CEO.

And with sights now set on Phase II of the project, arena supporters are looking to draw additional events and uses to the facility.

Over 12,000 people took in the 2023 Mandan Rodeo Days at the new Dale Pahlke Rodeo Arena at the Dakota Community Bank & Trust Rodeo Grounds.

A PERMANENT FACILITY

Mandan Rodeo Days has been without a permanent facility since the 1980s, and the three-day event had been held at Mandan’s Dacotah Speedway. “For the past 30 years, the rodeo arena was a temporary setup,” says Jason Mittlestadt, Mandan Rodeo Days past president. “It has always been a monumental task to set up and tear down. It required help from the city of Mandan and Mandan Parks and Recreation, along with the rodeo committee. It also created hardship for the racing club as we had to tear down the track every year, which they had to rebuild. This certainly has never been an ideal situation.”

Mandan Parks and Recreation Director Cole Higlin says staffing, time away from district projects, and wear and tear on equipment were ongoing concerns each year the temporary arena was constructed. “It has always been a goal to have a permanent rodeo facility,” he notes.

While Mittlestadt wasn’t the first Mandan Rodeo Days president to propose a permanent arena, he says when he was voted in as chairman six years ago, he made it a top priority. “I work with architects and engineers, so I was familiar with the steps that needed to be taken. I produced a plan and a budget and presented it to Cole Higlin, which in turn got the go ahead from the park board,” he notes. “The next step was to raise money, and this is where Dale Pahlke came in. Dale was instrumental with fundraising. He was our biggest donor for this project, along with the city of Mandan who donated through

Pahlke, who grew up on a farm and ranch, says he has been around rodeo his whole life. Dakota Community Bank & Trust has also been a supporter of Mandan Rodeo Days for 25 years, as well as a sponsor of the Dakota Community Bank & Trust Bull Riding Challenge held in Bismarck each summer. “I love the western lifestyle. It’s what I grew up with and I want to promote it,” says Pahlke. “I believe the Cowboy Channel is the single best thing that has happened to the expansion of rodeo in a long time.”

“The sport of rodeo has gained popularity because there are more avenues to experience it now, including in-person and the Cowboy Channel’s nationwide viewership,” he continues.

The biggest donors to the Mandan Rodeo Grounds were Dale Pahlke of Dakota Community Bank & Trust and the City of Mandan through the visitor’s fund.

“The broadcast of the Mandan Rodeo Days Fourth of July Rodeo promoted the sport, the region and our community on national television viewed by people from coast to coast. Our intent is for people to see the rodeo on TV and later come see it in person.

To recognize the national exposure not only enhances the rodeo but also advertises the facility for event producers to bring their events to town stimulating our local businesses and our tourism.”

A total of $4.1 million was raised for the project and construction on the $3.1 million arena began in May 2022. The completed Dale Pahlke Rodeo Arena was unveiled on June 1. It includes fencing and gates as well as two covered grandstands, each seating 2,000 people. The rodeo facility also boasts an announcer stand, audio visual system, ticket booth, livestock pens, and contestant warmup area. “We have all new panels and chutes, covered grandstands, rodeo office, sound system, pavilion, ticket office, crow’s nest, and great ground to work with that has drain tile to manage water,” says Mittlestadt.

The first Mandan Rodeo Days were held at the new arena with great success, notes Pahlke. “It went very well. They were sold out two of the three nights, and we’ve had a lot of compliments on the facility and people being generally happy with the arena,” he says. “I want to thank all of the sponsors who graciously stepped up to make this arena possible.”

“It is only three days, but we had more than 12,000 people come to the rodeo grounds,” says Higlin, noting the event also brought to light some additional needs at the facility. “We learned a lot from the rodeo, and we are working to put together a Phase II master plan to address these needs.”

The Phase II expansion includes additional seating, bathrooms, a permanent concessions area, and VIP suites. Higlin notes concrete has already been poured to make room for additional fans and food trucks at the rodeo grounds.

Mittelstadt says the Mandan Rodeo Days has deep history and tradition and is important to the community. “It needed a home and now it has one. With all the work needed with the old setup, it was getting harder and harder to maintain help and I was worried it would eventually go downhill,” he notes. “Now with this facility, the committee should grow, excitement is back, and the tradition will continue.”

GROWING THE SPORT OF RODEO

Mandan Rodeo Days isn’t the only event scheduled at the new arena. The Mandan Horse and Saddle Club manages the use of the facility throughout the year and other rodeos are beginning to fill its schedule. “It got use from high school rodeo, barrel racing events, family rodeos, and ranch rodeo,” says Mittlestadt. “As time goes on, more and more events will be happening.”

“This is all to create great excitement for the sport of rodeo,” says Pahlke. “We have some great rodeo athletes in the state, and probably have more coming up that we need to provide facilities to promote their talents.”

He notes the Mandan Rodeo is just one part of the arena, but it can have a significant impact. “It is a great economic impact for the community and if we could convert it to a fouror five-day rodeo, and make it a bigger rodeo, it would be a huge benefit to the community.”

“This is a great, permanent facility for all kinds of rodeos,” Pahlke continues. “This brings world champions to perform in front of the people of Bismarck-Mandan.”

A MULTI-USE FACILITY

“We want to make this a facility that anything parks and rec will let you do, you can do it there,” says Pahlke, noting a concert has already been held in the arena.

“We want to showcase the facility beyond the rodeo and have even explored its use as a skating rink in the winter and hosting an outdoor hockey day,” adds Higlin, noting community groups have also called to rent the facility.

Mittlestadt says the arena is a big draw to the area. “Mandan is largely a ranching and farming community and having this facility for our kids is by far the biggest benefit. We now have a very nice equine facility that our kids can be proud of,” he notes. “The added benefit of this is it can also host large events like Mandan Rodeo Days, bringing people and contestants from all over the United States and different countries to our community.”

Pahlke agrees. “We want to make it so we can make rodeo bigger and better and have a bigger economic impact on our community and state.”

While the focus of the arena is to continue to grow the Mandan Rodeo Days and the sport of rodeo, Higlin says the possibilities are endless. “We are hoping to have events at the arena we aren’t even thinking of yet. This is really a dream that became reality.”

In addition to rodeo competitions, other events such as concerts can be held at the facility.

FACE & JAW SURGERY CENTER

Tell us about yourself and your role within your business.

A: There are four surgeons at our location in Bismarck. Dr. Joseph Deatherage, Dr. Preston Gomez, Dr. Michael Knoll, and Dr. Derek Miller. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, our doctors manage a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth, and facial regions. Our surgeons practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from dental implant surgery and third molar (wisdom tooth) removal to corrective jaw surgery. This also includes techniques designed to rebuild bone structure with minimal surgical intervention and optimal patient comfort. Our surgeons can also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries, and fractures.

MEMBER SINCE 1982

Briefly tell us the history behind Face and Jaw Surgery Center and how you got started.

A: Face and Jaw Surgery Center was formally transitioned on January 1, 1992, after Dr. Gerard Koorbusch joined the practice in 1991. The Bismarck location has been a primary oral and maxillofacial surgery facility for more than 30 years. Face and Jaw Surgery Center has five locations: Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, Jamestown and most recent, Dickinson.

Face & Jaw Surgery Center has been members since 1982.

How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Face and Jaw Surgery Center?

A: With the growth of Bismarck-Mandan, it has allowed our practice to grow as well. We have been able to add employment opportunities which allows our practice to increase our productivity and have a flexible schedule for referring doctors to refer their patients to us and meet our communities needs.

What trends are taking place in your industry?

A: Not only is technology evolving in our day-to-day life, but it is also evolving in the dental industry. Most of our patient records have been transitioned into electronic files, as well as imaging needed for treatment. X-rays and cone beam scans (CT Scans) help our doctors electronically plan placement of dental implants. With the help of 3D imaging and intraoral scanning of patients’ mouth, this aids in planning placement of dental implants to the utmost accuracy.

Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with?

A: A few changes that we’ve had to deal with as an industry has been the DSO (Dental Support Organizations) acquisitions and shortage of dental assistants in the state of ND. Regarding the DSO’s, we continue to keep ownership locally. This allows the partners of Face and Jaw to make changes and/or improvements to the organization as they feel fit. As far as the assistant shortage, Face and Jaw works closely with the dental assisting schools and the North Dakota State Dental Association to help improve the assisting programs and provides on-site training and encourages job shadowing opportunities.

What does the future Face and Jaw Surgery Center look like and the industry as a whole look like to you?

A: Looking ahead, we hope to continue and grow our relationships with local and surrounding dental offices to provide services for their patients. Face and Jaw has been a primary oral and maxillofacial surgery center for over 30 years and we are planning to do so for another 30+ years!

Face and Jaw Surgery Center became a Chamber EDC member in 1982, why do you continue to renew?

A: Not only is the Chamber EDC membership a great way to stay connected to our community, but we also strive to support organizations that are connected and committed to encouraging our local economy.

What should other Chamber EDC members know about Face and Jaw Surgery Center that may assist them?

A: Our organization is successful due to continued support from our community. If there is anything that Face and Jaw can do to support other local organizations, please reach out! We are invested in helping our community.

ENROLLMENT IN K-12 AND HIGHER EDUCATION

K-12 schools across Bismarck-Mandan are back in session with growing enrollment numbers. Public and private schools had a total of 20,257 students enrolled as of the first day of classes for fall 2023. This number has increased by 10.82% from Fall of 2017 and the newer grade schools in Bismarck and Mandan are already bustling with kids.

University of Mary, UTTC and BSC have seen healthy increases in enrollment this fall. University of Mary welcomed nearly 700 new students, a university enrollment record, between their freshman and transfer enrollment from all 50 states and 20 countries and has a strong overall enrollment of 3,850 students. UTTC saw an increase in enrollment this fall with 543 students which is an all time high for their campus. BSC is up 7.8% in headcount with the highest enrollment in 10 years with 4,065 students enrolled for Fall 2023.

The community is grateful for the efforts of the educational institutions as their students today become workforce for tomorrow!

BUSINESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE MONTH

The North Dakota Department of Commerce announced the launch of the revised INNOVATE ND grant reimbursement program designed to help North Dakota entrepreneurs further their business by supporting customer and market research.

Program participants are eligible for up to $22,500 in reimbursable expenses to be paid through an Entrepreneur Center. There are two phases offering $7,500 and $15,000, respectively in reimbursable expenses. The participant has up to three months per phase, for a total of six months, to complete all requirements of the program.

The program is administered through four entrepreneur Centers:

• The North Dakota Women’s Business Center, Bismarck

• Jamestown Regional Entrepreneurial Center, Jamestown

• NDSU Research & Technology Park, Fargo

• UND Center for Innovation, Grand Forks

GOLDMAN SACHS KICKS OFF 10,000 SMALL BUSINESS PROGRAM

Goldman Sachs kicked off its 10,000 Small Businesses program on the Bismarck State College campus on September 8th. The kickoff of the program coincided with the announcement by Goldman Sachs that they were launching their $100 million Investment in Rural Communities initiative.

The new initiative, first launching in North Dakota and Arkansas, is an extension of Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses program. The group of 25 North Dakota businesses that are a part of the 10,000 Small Businesses program are the first statewide class. North Dakota and Arkansas were the first states to have the statewide program launched in their respective states. Speakers at the event included Governor Doug Burgum, Senator John Hoeven, and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon.

The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program was a suggested strategy in the Chamber EDC’s Economic Development Strategic Plan and we are looking forward to hearing from participants and local facilitators as the program progresses.

BISMARCK PUBLIC SCHOOLS WELCOMED A RECORD-BREAKING NUMBER OF STUDENTS ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR

August 24 marked the first day of the 2023-2024 school year for Bismarck Public Schools (BPS). Overall enrollment was 13,732 students in kindergarten through grade 12. The district also welcomed 369 students to Bismarck Early Childhood Education pre-K classrooms.

BPS is the largest school district in the state of North Dakota, and this year’s enrollment numbers are the highest ever recorded in the state. Dr. Jeff Fastnacht, Superintendent of BPS, stated “The population growth in BPS is a reflection of a strong and growing community along with a first-class

BPS encompasses over 500 classrooms across 18 grade schools, three middle schools, three senior high schools, an alternative high school, a Career Academy and Technical Center, an Adult Learning Center, and an Early Childhood Education Program (BECEP). The first day also marked the return of students to Hughes Educational Center (HEC), which previously served as a middle school and most recently acted as the district’s central office. HEC now offers students career and technical education programming. Central administrative offices have moved to 128 Soo Line.

SANFORD HEALTH ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF MORE HOSPITAL BEDS

Sanford Health is adding 36 new beds to the Bismarck Medical Center to help meet community needs. The new beds will be placed on the third, fourth and fifth floors of the downtown facility at 300 N 7th Street.

“We are excited to announce this investment that will continue to expand our facility to meet the region’s needs,” said Todd Schaffer, M.D., President & CEO of the Bismarck region of Sanford Health.

“Over the years, Sanford has seen tremendous growth, and the addition of hospital beds to our medical center is addressing that growth while we continue planning for a new heart hospital.”

The new beds are part of more than $200 million in investments by Sanford in the Bismarck-Mandan community to increase services and enhance patient access.

“Combining the expansion with beds we added in 2020, Sanford Health will have added more than 50 licensed beds to the Sanford Bismarck Medical Center,” said Cole Johnson, senior director of planning and construction.

“The bed expansion demonstrates Sanford’s commitment to the community and the investment in keeping patient care close to home.”

Various Sanford departments within the existing space in the Medical Center will move to other locations to create room for the new beds. The project will have minimal impact on hospital operations and is expected to take a year and a half to complete.

BISMARCK MAYOR ASKS BURLEIGH COUNTY COMMISSION FOR COOPERATION TO REDUCE BISMARCK RESIDENTS’ TAX BURDEN

Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz met with the Burleigh County Commission this evening to share concerns about the County’s Public Health funding that is increasing the tax burden on Bismarck residents.

The population of Burleigh County is 99,280, with the residents of Bismarck constituting nearly 75 percent of it. Bismarck residents contribute an equal share of the county’s property taxes. Schmitz contends that Burleigh County Commission decisions have also created an unfair and additional tax burden on the residents of Bismarck.

The Burleigh County Commission has continually voted against proportionately supporting the operational expenses of Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health, says Schmitz. By law, the County is required to provide public health services. Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health’s net expenditure from the general funds budget for 2023 is $2,323,000. The County is only paying $301,378, with Bismarck picking up the balance.

Bismarck residents pay both city and county taxes and are covering just over 96 percent of public health expenses, not 75 percent, which is the fair portion they should pay. For every $100,000 of home or commercial building value, Bismarck residents pay $113.93 more than they should.

“I am asking for a new commitment to cooperation between the County and City. When the County Commission votes against sharing expenses equally across all of Burleigh County, they are voting against the residents of Bismarck,” states Schmitz. “Bismarck residents represent 75 percent of the county, and consideration needs to be given to how these County decisions impact them.”

Schmitz is committed to working on this issue through the Bismarck-Burleigh Commissions Committee which has been meeting twice a month and will continue to meet regularly. Schmitz continues, “The joint commission committee is a logical, streamlined way approach to making recommendations on how we meet the needs of our residents.”

UNIVERSITY OF MARY SETS NEW ENROLLMENT RECORD AND WELCOMES LARGEST FRESHMAN CLASS

Classes officially begun on campus Tuesday, September 5, the new Class of 2023 will be remembered historically as a record setting one with the largest number of freshmen to ever enroll at the University of Mary. As of now, the University of Mary overall enrollment will be approximately 3,850. Of those students, 568 are freshmen, breaking a 2018 record of 533.

The numbers are not final until early fall when the official total is submitted to the federal government. Vice President for Public Affairs Rachael Brash says not only is the freshman class at its highest, but also this year’s freshman class to sophomore class retention rate set a record at 83.4% — up from 80.4%. Those two data points make this the largest enrollment ever at the University of Mary.

“There is a very strong demand for the high-quality programs taught by world-class faculty in a Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine environment at a very affordable price,” explained Brash. “That culture and those offerings are appealing in today’s world of public discontent, high anxiety, and economic uncertainty. I think another important factor is we hear from our current student-body that Mary fosters a welcoming community environment their siblings, parents, friends hear about and subsequently word gets around — that sense of belonging attracts more students. Their peers want to come here — not only from North Dakota, but also from around the US and internationally.”

There are 50 states and 20 countries represented on campus. Of those students 43% come from North Dakota, while Minnesota and Wisconsin round off the top three geographic locations with 15% and 4%, respectively.

New to campus this year when it officially opens on September 15 is an extension to the west side of Lumen Vitae University Center (LVUC) called The Lodge — that includes a beautiful lounging area for students with tropical vegetation, waterfall, and terrace overlooking the majestic Missouri River Valley — the same view Lewis and Clark experienced back in 1804. Also, opening in September, a newly renovated nursing facility on the north wing of the Casey Center providing the most advanced health care technology and four-times the number of nursing simulation experiences.

In addition to this year’s expansion, the University of Mary is experiencing tremendous growth on campus as a result of its three-phased $272 million Vision 2030 Capital Campaign started in 2015. Phase I included a new all-female Roers Residence Hall; Field House for various sports and student health and wellness area; LVUC at the center of campus featuring The Crow’s Nest Restaurant with 24/7 dining, lounging areas, and student amenities; and the state-of-the-art Hamm School of Engineering, to name just a few.

Phase II is currently underway with the recent expansion and completion of the Hamm School of Engineering. There’s more building to come in the near future with the anticipation of a new Welcome Center added on to the Benedictine Center for Servant Leadership building on south campus; an all-new master landscaping project throughout campus and a Marauders Sports Complex on the east side of campus parallel to Highway 1804 that will bring several NCAA sports onto campus; and the expansion of the Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences to meet the nation’s health care needs.

DECOMMISSIONED SUBSTATION TO PROVIDE NEW WORKFORCE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

The North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) has added a new piece of equipment to its apprenticeship, training and safety program, thanks to generous donations from Central Power Electric Cooperative and Rainbow Energy. Central Power donated a decommissioned substation, and Rainbow Energy paid for the concrete to install it at the Lineworker Training Center in Mandan. The distribution substation will be used to provide hands-on training to the state’s lineworkers and apprentice lineworkers.

“North Dakota’s electric cooperatives have a long history of working together to provide crucial training for the electric cooperative workforce, having founded the country’s first lineworker training school in partnership with Bismarck State College in 1970,” says NDAREC General Manager and Executive Vice President Josh Kramer. “It is critical for North Dakota’s electric cooperatives to plan for the future and train our workforce.

As the number of substations in the state continues to grow, the demand for substation and relay technicians is on the rise. The donated substation will provide electric cooperatives with more training opportunities to develop the existing workforce to construct, operate and maintain distribution substations.”

Distribution substations play an important role in safely delivering reliable power to electric cooperative members. Electricity is transmitted at very high voltages and low currents to reduce heat and transmission losses. Transmission lines, which transfer electricity from the power supplier to the substation, require the highest voltage, as they carry power the furthest. Once electricity reaches a distribution substation, it is generally transformed down to 7,200 volts before being transmitted along the distribution lines, which carry power to members’ homes, farms and businesses.

“Central Power’s board of directors recognizes the value in training employees,” says Mark Sherman, Central Power manager of operations and engineering. “This substation will allow trainees to go beyond the textbook and gain invaluable hands-on experience, preparing them for careers at electric cooperatives.”

Previously located near McLean Electric Cooperative in Garrison, the decommissioned substation will arrive at its new home, NDAREC’s Lineworker Training Center, in September. Central Power’s lineworkers will transport and rebuild the substation near the new training center.

“We are grateful to Central Power and Rainbow Energy for their generous donations and support of our electric cooperative education programs,” Kramer says.

HEARTVIEW BISMARCK LAUNCHES OUTPATIENT EVALUATION WALK-IN SERVICES

Heartview is thrilled to announce the launch of walk-in services for outpatient substance use treatment evaluations at its Bismarck location. Patients can walk into the 101 E Broadway, Bismarck facility, Monday through Thursday from 8:00am - 10:00am without an appointment, streamlining the process of seeking help. This evidence-based model aims to break barriers and make it easier for individuals to access much-needed treatment.

Jessica Brewster, Heartview Bismarck’s chief operating officer, expressed her enthusiasm for the new program, stating, “When people reach out for treatment, they need help now, not a month from now. The walk-in model provides access to care when the person is ready. During the soft launch of the walk-in services, we have had people receive an evaluation and start outpatient care the next day.”

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 16 percent of North Dakota adults met the criteria for a substance use disorder within the last year and 15 percent of North Dakota adults who needed treatment for substance use did not receive treatment. Walk-in services are a significant step forward to providing accessible treatment to individuals with substance use disorders.

Walk-in evaluations are currently provided for individuals seeking outpatient treatment, clients wanting to enter residential treatment can call the intake department at 701-751-6129. Coverage or payment will need to be in place prior to receiving an evaluation at the walk-in clinic. If individuals do not yet have insurance and are interested in getting the process started before arriving at walk-in, they can call Heartview’s main number and staff will assist patients in applying for Medicaid or the ND Substance Use Voucher. The number of walk-in evaluation slots is dependent on daily staff availability.

BISMARCK CITY ADMINISTRATOR HUNKE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT PLANS FOR THE START OF 2024

Administrator Keith Hunke has announced that he will be retiring at the start of 2024. Hunke’s career has stretched across five decades. He began as a laborer in the Bismarck Street Department in 1982. Promotions followed as he became a heavy equipment operator for Public Works in 1987, a shop foreman in 1990, a purchasing agent for Public Works in 1992 and eventually served as a director for that department in 1998.

In 2006, Hunke would begin serving as the Bismarck’s first Assistant City Administrator. He would be appointed City Administrator following the retirement of Bill Wocken in 2016.

As City Administrator, Hunke has been responsible for managing the day-today operations of the City of Bismarck’s 15 departments. Presently, the City of Bismarck employs more than 650 full-time staff and 900 employees overall. Bismarck has increased by about 30,000 people during Hunke’s employment with the City. The overall population has grown by more than 30 percent since 2000.

Hunke credited the achievements and progress he has seen in Bismarck to city employees’ support and dedication to the city.

Hunke’s last day of work will be Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

CITY OF MANDAN PROMOTES WIGNESS TO CITY ENGINEER

Jarek Wigness was recently promoted to City Engineer. Wigness joined the City of Mandan in November 2022 as Assistant City Engineer. He previously worked in engineering roles and as the Assistant City Engineer in Williston.

Wigness attended the University of North Dakota and attained a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering.

Since November, Wigness has worked on many projects, most notably the Memorial Highway reconstruction project, Waste Water Treatment Plant long range planning and Water Treatment Plant replacement reservoir and optimization projects.
