2 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021
From the Publisher Welcome to this side of the financial year, yes, the year is just flying by and we are no where closer winning this race with Corona Virus. Who would have thought that in July 2021 we would still be going through lock downs? The snap three day lock down by Queensland premier Anastacia caused a lot of havoc within the community specially the business community, but painful as it maybe it had to happen in interest of community at large. The national cabinet has agreed to half the number of international arrivals, and work on the regional quarantine centres as a way forward. A suggestion has been made that COVID 19 now be treated same as any other flu, and we need to learn to live with it, a tough call it maybe but it could also be the reality that we would have to live with. Local travel is will be encouraged while international borders remain closed for a longer period yet. Vaccination certificates and health checks would become mandatory for international travel. Brisbane
had
become
abuzz
with
functions and events so many functions including GOPIO Queensland’s poster Launch for India Day Fair 2021 had to be postponed. Ravishing fashionistas mega event had to be put on hold along with a range of others, these are historic times that we live in. Planning for India Day Fair has progressed well, but the team is mindful of the looming dangers and all efforts are being made to minimise the risks. The event this year is scheduled to be held at South Bank Piazza, as this is a closed venue and entry and exit is controlled, Qld government QR check in codes can be easily used, plus it is under cover, all these factors were considered in choosing the venue. Congratulations is in order for Soma Nair ji for organising a wonderful children’s function “Bal Pratihba Pratiyogita” I was impressed with the confidence level of our youngsters, all of them did very well, obviously some better than others. I was honoured to be one of the judges of the competition. These kinds of activities should take place more often as they create a healthy competition amongst our youngsters and encourages
them. When they see other children on stage reciting Mantras etc, it gives their morality a boost and they feel they belong and are not alone. Shishir Sangeet, Indian Classical Sitar and Vocal concert organised by Queensland Sangeet Mela Association was another very successful concert. Next to GOPIO Gold Coast, a very progressive chapter of GOPIO, they held two mega function in a day, International Yoga Day in the morning and their annual Gala dinner in the night. Both events were held at Sea World Convention centre in Gold Coast. Both events were well organised and attended, it is always a pleasure to attend their functions as they are always very well organised. The timing was right, and it did not clash with the lock down. And now to International Yoga Day, even a world pandemic could not stop the enthusiast, and this event was observed all around the globe. What a great initiative that has become a global phenomenon, within the GOPIO network there were multiple events organised around the world. In brisbane the notable events were that of Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan (DJJS) and FiCQ’s International yoga day. GOPIO Gold Coast excelled in its International Yoga day at SeaWorld convention centre. Festival wise we will have Guru Purnima as Full moon day during Ashadha month is known as Guru Purnima day. Traditionally this day is reserved for Guru Puja or Guru Worship. On this day disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. Guru refers to spiritual guide who enlighten disciples by his knowledge and teachings. Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima and this day is commemorated as birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa. Veda Vyasa was the author as well as a character in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Adi Shankara, Sri Ramanuja Acharya and Sri Madhvacharya are some of the noteworthy Gurus in Hinduism. Guru Purnima is also celebrated by Buddhists in the honour of Gautama Buddha to commemorate the day when Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India. Festival of chariots also usually takes place in July, hope these event go ahead as planned, if attending these events please observe the health and safety advice from Health department, and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone at India Day Fair 2021, wishing you all the best , remain safe Until next month happy reading —Umesh Chandra OAM

2021 – 2022 Migration Program Numbers Released Australia intends to open its borders next year in a budget plan to bring back migrants and speed up the economic recovery, amid federal government fears that growth cannot be sustained if travellers are kept away and citizens kept at home. In a key warning against closed borders, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said he believed in restoring migration to the levels seen before the pandemic as soon as the government’s health experts declared it possible. The federal budget includes core assumptions for coronavirus vaccinations and infections to aim for the opening of the international border in 2022, several months after the forecast in the budget seven months ago. “The borders will reopen when it’s safe to do so, and when they do, net overseas migration will increase, including skilled workers,” Mr Frydenberg told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. DHA have further confirmed that the numbers for 2021/22 will be the same as has been previously published for 2020/21. Despite DHA confirming there were no changes in allocation of the 160,000 allocation to different
categories in 2021/22 this appeared in the Australia senate official transcripts “Employer sponsored increased to 23,500. Skilled independent increased to 7,500. The regional category increased to 13,150. The state/territory nominated category increased to 13,150. The business innovation and investment category decreased to 11,000. Global talent category decreased to 11,000. The distinguished talent category increased to 350.” Also, much discussion about the migration program increasing back to 190,000 from 2023. Canberra, top ‘sustainable’ city, also has art to nourish culture roots
By Rama Gaind
capital Canberra - is not only leading the way on climate action, but it’s also home to an extensive number of gallery and exhibition spaces. It shouldn’t really come as a surprise to learn the nation’s capital has been named the world's most sustainable city, having already achieved 100% renewable electricity. Through investments in the 2020-21 budget, the ACT Government is transitioning to a cleaner future, and says “we are ready to take the next steps to transition to net zero emissions by 2045”. It is an ambitious agenda. The ACT is the first 'major' city outside Europe to transition 100% renewable energy. Canberra was at the top of a list published by UK comparison company Uswitch. Cities were assessed on a range of sustainability measures including energy,
Australia’s
transport infrastructure, affordability, pollution, air quality, carbon dioxide emissions and the percentage of green space in the area. According to the report, Canberra fared highly in the rankings due to its reliance on renewable energy and its large amounts of green space. "[Australia's] capital relies heavily on solar power and nearby wind farms, while also ensuring an incredible 94 per cent of its residents have internet access to make this one connected city," the report said. "An incredible 86.6 per cent of Canberra's transport infrastructure is green." Canberra took top honours with a score of 427 out of 600 on the sustainable cities report. While the national capital topped the overall list, it wasn't the only Australian city to make the cut. Brisbane took out third place, with an overall score of 382. Sustainability is not just environmental-ism. Simply put, sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources. Art exhibitions Canberra is the place to be for an aesthete, who loves and appreciates works of art and beautiful things. Australia's
largest inland city is unusual among others because it has been entirely planned. Make a detour from heading out to the usual tourist haunts and visit some blockbuster exhibitions showcasing the works of talented artists and cultural collections. The art lover will be spoiled for choice. WHY AM I ANGRY?
Pastor Suresh Dass Joseph josephdass@optusnet.com.au
Dear reader, it is our joy to bring you the word of God. It's okay to feel anger, feel hurt, and feel disappointment, but it's not okay to let those feelings stay. You can't take them
in so close to your heart that that's all you think about, and you wake up the following day upset, wanting to pay somebody back, not excited about your future. If you keep thinking about it, reliving the hurt, and dwelling on what they said, you are allowing it into your heart. You have to guard your heart against that. Keep it on the surface, on the outside, do not bring it into the secret place of your heart. When you face opposition, trouble, and bad breaks, that's when it's easiest to let anger and bitterness in. In those times when you don't understand it, come back to the place of peace, the position of trust. Do not let what's outside

get inside. Your heart needs to stay positive, hopeful, peaceful, and at rest. Keep God on the throne. In the scriptures (Genesis 4v 3-8), we read of Cain and Abel, the children of Adam and Eve, the first family on earth. They were a loving, happy family. But it came to pass that onetime Cain became very angry with his brother Abel. So God warned him to rule over his anger, or it could turn into sin. Sadly, Cain did not, and he ended up getting rid of his brother. Another incident in the bible (Genesis 27), where Isaac and Rebecca had two sons named Esau and Jacob. Esau, the older brother, became very angry with his

When you’ve finished viewing some, if not all the art displays, you will realise that if “simplicity is the glory of expression” then “individuality of expression is the beginning and end of all art”.

brother Jacob and planned to kill him. But as we read on, we never hear of him doing so, but instead, he forgave Jacob, and the two were reconciled, and there was peace between the two. Here are 3 things we can learn from Esau and keep our anger in control. 1) You cannot control everything that is happening around you, but you can control how you react. The scriptures say we are not to let the sun go down on our wrath. That means you have enough energy and power for each day. It's not an unlimited supply. Do you know how much energy it takes to go through the day upset and angry? That's the energy you could have well spent on your family or at
work. Moving through the day, bitter and angry will be like walking in the dark even though it is broad daylight. Esau checked his heart (Genesis 27v41). He demonstrated self-control and kept the matter on the surface. 2) The more you delay your anger and wait, the stronger you will become. As you pause and wait, you will feel a strength, a power rising from within you. Research shows that your immune system is weakened by up to four hours each minute you are angry. You will meet people who are peace stealers. They are always angry, upset with a temper. Good news is that you can stop allowing them to steal your peace. Esau said, "The days of mourning for my father are at hand so
that I will wait…." 3) Each time you release anger, you make more room for peace and joy in your life. Each day you can only carry so much weight on your shoulders. You have to make a choice either you can become a wrath carrier or a joy carrier. In the scriptures (Genesis 33v10), we read of Esau, who was no longer angry with Jacob but pleased and full of joy. He chose to release his anger so he could make space for more joy, and so can you. Let us pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for filling me with your power and energy daily as I refuse to be a tool in the hands of anger, in Jesus, name. God bless you. A sense of wonder/Ensure Your Child Lives in a Wondrous World - Sadhguru, Isha Foundation Children these days have replaced a sense of wonder for life with “www.” They know the whole universe before they are six! But if you look at scientists, they are more freaked out than ever – they don’t know which direction to go because wherever they look, it all looks deeper than it ever was. For example, they are telling you there are over a hundred billion galaxies – not stars, a hundred billion galaxies. As you explore, as you know, the wonder will increase because you realize the nature of the existence. A sense of wonder is gone in people today because what we call knowledge are stupid conclusions about life. Today, people are carrying their attention deficit like a qualification. Anything in this existence will yield to you only if you pay substantial attention to it. But people have become such that they can’t pay attention to anything. In this condition, there will be no wonder, only conclusions in your head. There are only monologues going on in your head; there is no perception. If there is perception, all the noise in your head will just stop. If you are looking at something absolutely
This is why people enjoy the cinema: you switch off the lights and they are focused on the film for those ninety minutes. Their usual monologues are gone – something else is happening.

attention. But the important thing is, their attention is engaged continuously, which makes them feel something has happened to them on that day, going to the cinema hall. What is playing on the screen is instrumental in grabbing their attention, but it is the continuous attention that makes the experience what
it is. This is a rudimentary form of meditation which is called dharana. Every school should bring in a dimension that requires a child to pay attention to something continuously. It could be music; it could be dance. You cannot do music or dance unless you pay attention to it. But you can pass an examination
without attention. If you just so much as make children walk in the forest in the darkness, without torches, without cell phones, without anything, in a protected atmosphere, you will see that their ability to pay attention and their sense of wonder will explode. This is something that parents must take care of.
Bringing up your child does not mean just sending him to school so that he gets marks and grades and all that nonsense. In body and mind, your child should develop his full capabilities. That is when success will manifest in his or her life. Just marks will not manifest as success. Kannada Sangha Queensland 2020-21 Journey! BRISBANE Kannada Sangha
Queensland, the last eighteen months have been unprecedented in our lifetime. A pandemic as severe and brutal as the COVID-19 was last witnessed exactly a 100 years ago, in the form of the ‘Spanish Flu’ in 1918-20. With all the advancement in technology, science and medicine, our expectations of better preparation for the COVID-19 came to nought as Mother Nature unleashed her fury. This pandemic has affected millions across the world, fatally, mentally, financially, and often ignored but important, socially. There are various studies being done on the impact of this pandemic in different areas. However, one area that has not been given enough importance in these studies is the social impact on the general public and communities. KSQ Executive Committee realized this and strived hard to ensure the Kannada Community in Queensland were interacting socially through various events and platforms. During the early part of the last year KSQ was forced to cancel planned events in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic entering Australian shores and wreaking havoc. Keeping in with the norm, KSQ made a small effort to help students, community members in ways it could and reached out to the community to volunteer. In July 2020 the incumbent Executive Committee handed over the responsibility to a new team. Given the situation, the new Executive Committee had their task cut out and big shoes to fill in. The prevalent pandemic conditions only made the challenge harder. The author is a member of this Executive Committee and is proud to be associated with the team that set out to make a difference. The first and foremost challenge was to get to know each other with no option to have regular, face to face meetings. This was the same time offices, schools, colleges, government organizations were beginning to adjust to “lockdowns” and restricted movements. Although online video and audio meeting platforms were existing before 2020, the pandemic forced everyone to look at these platforms in a different light. KSQ EC was no different and we had our first meeting online. This gave rise to an
idea to host online programs and events to engage the community, like Taranga – a knowledge sharing event, “Thatt Antha Heli” – a unique quiz program to name a few. The KSQ EC adapted to the new way of things quickly and effectively. The Executive Committee planned to host Ganesh Chaturthi, a traditional yearly event for Kannada Sangha Queensland. However, rise in COVID-19 cases at the time forced the cancellation of the event. Various options like remote event being telecast via video, social media attendance for the event held in a private house among others. Were considered but not proceeded with, due to non-feasibility. Thankfully the number of COVID-19 cases dropped significantly in the following months that allowed the restrictions to be eased, people to gather at events and there was hope. The Executive Committee started discussions around the possibility of Rajyotsava and Deepavali - Festival of Lights, being the first public event in a long time. The fact that Kannada Sangha Queensland was celebrating its 25th year of existence only added to the fervour and expectations. However, it was still early days of eased restrictions and there was an uneasy calm all around. Although the event was a possibility, lot of care and planning was needed to ensure it was held following all government regulations and recommendations. This was no easy task, and unprecedented in the history of KSQ. Lots of lengthy online discussions and phone calls led to a plan being created. The event was split in to tasks and responsibilities were assigned to all EC members. Everything from announcing the event, registration, contact tracing capabilities, appropriate labels and posters, seating, sanitization and social distance, distribution of food, invitation and welcoming guests, entertainment programs were carefully planned keeping within the COVID-19 directions. Despite a few scares, the event went ahead and was a grand success. Members attended and supported the event is big numbers, followed all regulations and enjoyed an evening of togetherness and joy. At the conclusion, there was a warm sense of elation and quiet confidence

amongst all members of the EC. KSQ Rajatha Mahotsava, Rajyotsava and Deepavali was a reality and the plans were executed almost to the proverbial T
One of the notable effects of the ongoing pandemic is the lesser availability of blood donors due to a variety of reasons. The need for blood donation is constant since
donated blood can be stored only for 42 days after which it is disposed of. Generally, one person in Australia needs blood every 3-4 seconds. Additionally, one in three Australians will need blood at least once in their lives. KSQ organised a Blood Donation Drive with support from Australian Red Cross lifeblood to raise awareness about an important and effective way to help our loved ones, friends and community. The successful planning and execution of the first event led to a raise in expectations of the wider community and the EC alike. Conditions permitting, there could be more events planned, community could be engaged better and given a reason to put aside worry and uncertainty albeit for a short while. This gave rise to the idea to have an evening of relaxed entertainment including singing, dancing and acting. The EC named this event Samskruthika Sanje, an evening of Cultural extravaganza. The planning and execution of the prior event had prepared the EC well to follow similar planning within the rules and regulations boundaries to delivery another outstanding event which was well attended and received by the wider community. All this while, the online programs continued with talks on Mental Health, Cooking, Personality Development, Resume Writing to name a few. Geographically, the northern hemisphere welcomes the spring season during the month of April, which is usually when Ugaadi, the Kannada New Year is celebrated. Traditionally Ugaadi is celebrated in Queensland in the form of an event hosted by KSQ. The EC did not want to miss an opportunity to keep the tradition alive. Despite the usual venue not being available, EC members found out a few alternate venues and decided on an auditorium in a local school as the venue to host Ugaadi Utsava. The new norm of registration, seating, food, programs were planned according to the government regulations. This seems to be the new normal for a few years to come. As with the previous two events, Ugaadi Utsava was greatly supported by KSQ members and patrons. With all the traditional and cultural events done, a casual
meet and greet picnic was organized by the EC recently. The thought process behind this picnic was to allow our newest members to introduce themselves to the community in a cool, casual setting and hope to provide a platform for friends, old and new to mingle amongst one another, play a relaxing game or two, enjoy lunch and have some “fun in the sun”. The picnic was a fitting way to end the events for the year. One of the highlights of the events held during the last year has been members’ resolve, support and willingness to follow the rules and regulations. KSQ Executive Committee thanks its members wholeheartedly for the unending support and guidance. In a few weeks, this Executive Committee will hand over the reins to a new one. The author hopes that the efforts and work put in by this Executive Committee has made a positive impact of KSQ members in a challenging year. Just when things were getting better worldwide, the pandemic being won over by collective action and thinking, came the news of rising COVID-19 cases in India. A new, more infectious variant of the COVID-19 virus was spreading death, sickness and fear in one of the great nations. This was a cause for concern within India and all over the world. The majority of KSQ hailing from Karnataka in India were no different, concerned that loved ones and family back home were suffering. KSQ EC stands in solidarity with everyone suffering and wish that the situation improves quickly. KSQ members sincerely hope that loved ones back home are staying safe and prayers and wishes are with everyone in this difficult time. KSQ has raised funds and contributions to help relief teams in their fight to support recovery. Human resilience is an intuitive response to extreme adversity and/or acute stress observed across the life course. Humans have survived and overcome a great spectrum of adversities over the course of our evolution. As Helen Keller observed, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it”. There is no doubt that the world will believe in itself and help one another to overcome this adversity displaying Human Resilience once again.

Volunteers in the Community There are many community
organisations which rely entirely on volunteers. Volunteering is important because it enables individuals to help others in a selfless, generous way. Volunteering means giving your time and abilities to aid others without the want of financial compensation. Put simply, volunteering is a service to the community. When individuals volunteer they may choose to help people, support philanthropic causes and provide assistance to their local community. In this way, these organizations utilize groups of unpaid volunteers in order to function. A TRIBUTE TO AN ICON OF
BA – DIJENDRA (DICK) SINGH FORMER BA TOWNCLERK SALUTES FORMER BA MAYOR
Guest Writer to FIJI PUNDIT Rajendra Prasad
Thakur Ranjit Singh, FIJI PUNDIT
PROLOGUE BY FIJI PUNDIT, THAKUR RANJIT SINGH We Ba people are sad to lose another icon of Ba, Dick Singh on 17 June, 2021, coming after recent loss of Daniel Elisha and Kishore Govind. The second generation Girmitiya and Rotary Boys of Ba are moving towards twilight of life, but they leave big achievements and memories, so they never really die. Same is true for Dijendra Singh, fondly know to all as Dick Singh. The photos here are by courtesy of FIJI PUNDIT, Thakur Ranjit Singh who last visited Dick Singh at his Clipcott, Yalalevu, Ba, Fiji home on 21 July 2019 after DAV College, Ba Fiji Reunion in Ba. Thakur was accompanied by Sada Sivan Naicker, another former DAV Student, and National
President of TISI Sangam in Fiji. The author / writer of this tribute, Rajendra Prasad is also a former DAV College, Ba student. Dick, apart from all his civic and community work, was also a stalwart of Arya Samaj in Ba, which initiated and ran Arya Samaj Schools in Fiji, including DAV. He can rightfully be recognized as Father of Ba Sports Stadium-Govind Park, and initiator of IDC in Fiji over five decades ago. I, with former Ba residents, Fiji Indian Diaspora and former students of Arya Samaj Schools salute him. Shat Shat Naman, Om Satgati, Bare Thakurji…you are gone….but not forgotten by Ba where you left your mark………… TRIBUTE BY RAJENDRA PRASAD It is difficult to find words to pay my heartfelt tribute to my friend Dijendra (Dick) Singh who passed away on Thursday 17 June 2021. Two weeks ago, he lost his beloved wife Prem and he himself had not been well for some time. My association with this great man went back several decades and I feel privileged that I had the benefit of his wisdom, knowledge, and guidance to raise the profile of Ba as a premier sporting district. Dick was a man of vision and enterprise who delighted in taking

He was the Mayor of Ba and when he conceptualized the mammoth stadium project, others demurred but a few, like me, caught inextricably in the swirl, stood by him. Doubters, detractors, and saboteurs comprised the majority but with Dick in command, few had the courage to confront or dissuade him. He was physically domineering, mentally agile and a strategic thinker beyond the ordinary. In 1976, he negotiated and bought exclusive rights for the Council to organize the 1976 IDC tournament for $29,500. It was a resounding success, beyond and above anyone’s imagination. The
gross income exceeded $160,000, which covered a substantial part of the loan raised to construct the stadium. What more, the Fiji Football Association then realized the potential for earning income and adopted Dick’s strategies to organize future IDC tournaments. I served Ba as Town Clerk under several mayors, but Dick was different. His restive spirit meant operating at a heightened pace and I liked the challenge. He was not driven by public opinion but by public need, which meant his public perceptions differed from time to time. Whenever I returned to Ba, since immigrating to New Zealand in 1987, visiting him and his wife was always high on the agenda. In the last few years, Dick’s body was failing but his restive mind defied the crumbling body, as he spouted on the unfinished projects! Rest in peace great soul! Where to Find Peace…?
You need find real answers to following questions:
Throughout human history many philosophers
These are simple but very important questions. We hope you will find the right answer through this message of hope. Who knows this is written just for you in such a troubled time. What is the truth? Centuries ago a Roman ruler asked the same question to Jesus.

Notice that Peace is given by the Person who alone has absolute power over troubles of this world. Jesus has overcome the forces of evil and darkness of this world.
Key Scripture: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIV) What is the truth? What is true peace? Whom can we trust in these troubled times?

Jesus said “Arise and Shine…”
Dear Reader, Currently we live in a world that is troubled and traumatised by the pandemic. But we need know the truth about finding real peace in this world. Vaccination is only a temporary victory over our current pandemic. Do you know where to find the peace? Many people are grieving for the loss of our family members and friends. And we need to be comforted by The Truth. Yes, God of all comfort alone has the power and grace to bring us into place of hope and deep comfort.

have tried to explain about truth. And they have created many forms and concepts about the truth. But, truth is not a concept or collection facts and ideas or good philosophy. Because these human ideas can never satisfy our quest real and ultimate truth. What scripture says about truth? Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own
authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come (John 8:32). Therefore you can see that, “Truth” is a Person. And truth is not a collection of good moral ideas. And that Person Jesus Christ invites you to a perfect relationship. Knowing the Truth leads to way to a purpose filled life. Jesus sums up his invitation by this promise of peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts

THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021 — 15
Karna – The Son of Surya Karna was one of the main characters of the epic the Mahabharat and had a divine origin. Once sage Durvasa visited king Kuntibhoj seeking his hospitality. The king welcomed the sage and appointed his adopted daughter Kunti to look after him. Kunti took care of his needs and kept the sage pleased. The sage was so impressed with her services that at the time of his departure, he offered Kunti a boon of her choice. She assured him that his good opinion was enough reward for her. However, the sage felt obliged and gave her a Mantra. He promised that it would be useful in her future and with its help she could summon any deity to do her bidding. Kunti was curious about the authenticity of the Mantra. One day, she got up early in the morning and looked at the rising sun. She wished to test the veracity of the Mantra and chanted it to summon the deity of light Surya, the Sun. To her surprise, Surya appeared before her in person and asked her what she wanted. She said that she did not want anything and requested him to leave her alone. Surya refused to leave without giving her a son to maintain the sanctity of the Mantra. As a result, a baby was born to Kunti wearing a golden Kawach, armour and Kundals, earrings. He later became illustrious Karna. Kunti was scared realising that delivering a baby before marriage would reduce her and her family’s social standing. She abandoned the child before anyone knew about him. She placed the child in a basket and set it afloat on a river. A childless Suta, charioteer, named Adhirath noticed the floating basket with the baby and brought it home. His wife Radha was overjoyed. They adopted the baby as their son and named him Vasushen, the one born with wealth of Kawach and Kundals. He was also addressed as Sutaputra and Radheya. Later, Kunti married prince Pandu of Hastinapur. Due to a curse, Pandu could not have children. He retired to the forest with his wives Kunti and Madri. Following a discussion with Pandu, using Durvasa’s Mantra, Kunti gave birth to Yudhisthir, Bhim and Arjun through deities Dharmaraj, Vayu, and Indra respectively. She also shared the Mantra with Madri, who became the mother of Nakul and Sahadeo through the deity Ashvinikumar. All five brothers were born in the forest and were known as Pandavas. Pandu died soon after their birth. Madri followed her husband and joined him on the funeral pyre. Kunti brought the children to the capital Hastinapur where Pandu’s brother Dhritrastra was ruling the kingdom on his behalf. She placed the sons into the care of
elders including grandfather Bhishma and wise Vidur. Dhritrastra had one hundred sons, commonly known as Kauravas. Duryodhan was the eldest. They did not like Pandavas and developed animosity toward them. Karna often visited Hastinapur and observed the royal children’s enmity. He became a pupil of teacher Dronacharya who taught both Pandava and Kaurava princes. Dronacharya was partial towards Arjun and trained him to become the greatest archer. Karna was equally talented and wished to acquire all the skills of Archery and other weapons. Dronacharya declined to teach him Brahmastra, the weapon of Brahma, noting that it was meant only for high-born candidates. Karna left Dronacharya and went to Parashuram, a great teacher of martial art. He presented himself as a Brahmin youth keen to learn weaponry skills from him. Parashuram was impressed by Karna’s enthusiasm, and accepted him as his student. He taught him all the weapons including the Brahmastra. One day Parashuram was resting with his head on Karna’s lap. A small insect started piercing Karna’s thigh. He felt severe pain but did not remove the insect assuming that the movement would disturb his Guru’s rest. Soon blood started flowing from Karna’s body. With contact of the warm blood, Parashuram woke up and noticed what had happened. He told Karna that he could not be a Brahmin. He insisted on knowing his true identity. Karna confessed that he was the son of a Suta and begged his pardon. Parashuram felt deceived and became angry. He pronounced a curse on him. “For deceiving your Guru, your knowledge of weapon will fail you when you need it most.” Karna felt dejected and walked away from the

Guru’s hermitage. On the way, suddenly an animal rushed past him. Without thinking he drew his bow and discharged an arrow on the animal killing it. He walked towards the dead animal. It was a cow. Instantly its owner a Brahmin arrived there. He accused Karna of killing his innocent cow. Karna attempted to pacify him and offered reparation. However, the Brahmin did not accept his offer and cursed him. “You will be killed when you are helpless to defend yourself just like this innocent cow you killed.” Having gone through misfortunes, Karna returned to his mother Radha for solace. After sometime he became aware of an open tournament being held in Hastinapur. Kaurava and Pandava princes were to demonstrate their skills in martial art. The display of their skills started with fanfare. Elders, teachers and the general public attended the exhibition. During the display, Arjun performed many supernatural feats and was almost declared a champion of the day. Suddenly Karna appeared in the arena. He announced to the audience that he could match all acts that Arjun had completed. Being an open tournament he was allowed and he did perform all those deeds. The audience was impressed. Duryodhan recognised Karna as a fitting opponent of Arjun. Karna challenged Arjun for a competition. Guru Kripacharya came forward and asked for his identity. As Arjun was a Pandava prince, he could only fight with a person equal in birth and status, a prince or a king. Karna felt mortified in revealing his identity as a Suta’s son. At that moment Duryodhan appeared before him. He crowned Karna as the prince of Angadesh to make him equal in status.
Just then Adhirath came towards the stage. When Karna saw him, he greeted him bowing down his head. The charioteer addressed the newly appointed prince as “my son” and embraced him. Seeing this, Bhim realised that Karna was Adhirath’s son and commented with scorn, “O son of a charioteer, you are not entitled to death in battle with Arjun the son of Kunti.” Hearing this Duryodhan sprang up in support of Karna and reprimanded Bhim. Kunti was present in the arena and witnessed the humiliation of her first-born son, whom she recognised through his Kawach and Kundals, but remained silent. As the princes were arguing their points, the sun set in the horizon. The display of skills was declared over. Karna was so obliged to Duryodhan for his support that he committed to a lifelong friendship with him. He vowed to sacrifice his life for him and became a member of Duryodhan’s inner circle. Karna attended Draupadi’s Svayamvar. Draupadi humiliated him by refusing to allow the charioteer’s son to participate in it. Karna was present during the game of dice between Pandavas and Kauravas. As a revenge for her action in the Svayamvar, he made vulgar comments against Draupadi during the robbing of her dress. The enmity between Kauravas and Pandavas intensified. Impelled by his loyalty to Duryodhan, Karna blindly sided with him and promised to kill Arjun in battle. Pandavas were exiled and it became obvious to deities that a war between Kauravas and Pandavas was eminent. As long as Karna remained equipped with his Kawach and Kundals he could not be killed. Karna was a generous man. Anybody who came to
him during his sun worship asking for a gift did not return without it. Indra was worried about his son Arjun so he planned to deprive Karna of his Kawach and Kundals, which made him invincible. The night before Indra was to execute his plan, Surya, Karna’s divine father appeared before him in dream and told Karna about Indra’s plan. He advised him not to part with his Kawach and Kundals at any cost. However, Karna refused to deviate from his act of charity. Indra appeared before Karna as a Brahmin and asked for a gift of Kawach and Kundals. Karna recognised that the person asking for the gift was Indra. He removed them from his body using a knife and gave them to Indra. Indra felt ashamed of his own greed to favour Arjun and for depriving Karna from his natural protection. He gave Karna a divine spear that would not miss the target but it could be used only once and after that it would return to Indra. It was a consolation, but Karna felt cheated by fate. He intended to use this spear against Arjun. After return of Pandavas from the exile they sought their kingdom back. Krishna as a well-wisher of Pandavas went to Hastinapur to negotiate with the Kauravas. Duryodhan declined to give any land without war and tried unsuccessfully to arrest Krishna. When the mission failed and Krishna was to return to Pandavas’ camp, Karna came to see him. He was apologetic for Duryodhan’s behaviour. During the meeting, Krishna told him the story of his birth and asked him to join his natural Pandava brothers, as he was also a son of Kunti. However, Karna refused to join them and abandon Duryodhan. He also requested Krishna not to tell the story of his birth to Yudhisthir. If Yudhishthir knew, he would abdicate the
kingdom in his favour and he would give it to Kauravas. Before the start of the Mahabharat war, Kunti came to Karna who was offering oblations to the deity Surya in the River Ganga. She begged him to return to Pandavas’ side. Karna realised his dilemma. He promised that she would remain the mother of five sons. He would target to kill only Arjun among Pandavas. If Arjun killed him then all her sons would remain as it was. If Arjun were killed then he would join Kunti as her son. During the war, Karna refused to fight under the leadership of Bhishma who became the Chief of the Kauravas’ army. Bhishma was critical of Karna and blamed him for inciting Duryodhan for the war. However, when Bhishma fell on the tenth day of the war, Karna visited him to pay him respect. Bhishma praised Karna for his commitment to friendship and blessed him. Karna joined the war on the eleventh day when Dronacharya became the Chief of Kauravas’ army. On the fourteenth day Bhim’s son Ghatotkach, a Rakshas fighting from the Pandavas’ side, inflicted heavy loss on the Kauravas. Karna was forced to use his Indra spear on him. It killed Ghatotkach but Karna lost his mighty weapon, which he had kept for use against Arjun. On the sixteenth day, after Dronacharya’s death, Karna became the Chief of Kauravas’ army. He got opportunities to kill all Pandavas except Arjun but allowed them to get away, remembering his promise to Kunti. King Salya was his charioteer, who discouraged Karna during the battle due to a previous bargain. Salya was the maternal uncle of Pandavas. During his fight with Arjun on the seventeenth day, a wheel of Karna’s chariot sank into the ground. He jumped down and tried unsuccessfully to drag it out. His memory failed to recall the Mantras of Parashuram. The curses of the Brahmin and Parashuram were in action. On Krishna’s prompting, Arjun shot an arrow and severed the great hero’s head. When Kunti heard of Karna’s death, she lamented in private. After the war, Pandavas performed death ceremonies for the dead. When Yudhisthir had ended the last offering, Kunti told him to make an offering for Karna. On further enquiry, Kunti disclosed the full story of Karna’s birth. Karna longed for recognition and good name in life and secured them like many great men only in his death. He is remembered for his bravery and generosity, and the misfortunes that framed his life. In modern era, he represents those who are subjected to injustice due to prevailing social division maintained by the dominant forces of the society. —Awadhesh Sharma

THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021 — 17
Obstacles During Mantra – Japa and methods to overcome them The content of this article is taken from the satsang of H.H. Sant Shri Asaram Ji Bapu. Pujya Bapu Ji had addressed the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in September 1993, that was 100 years after Swami Vivekananda addressed the same parliament in September 1893. Unhappy over the religious conversion happening in India, Pujya Bapu Ji tried to find out the reasons for people for the conversion. It was revealed that poor tribals are given the lure of money and they are converted. To stop the conversion of the tribals on the borders of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and areas of Orissa, Pujya Bapu Ji started “Bhjn kro bhojn kro or dehadi lo“program. Under this program the poor tribals are called into the nearby ashrams and asked to chant ‘Hari Om’ the whole day. They are given food twice during the day and at the end of the day they are given Rs 100 per day, so they feel like they are doing some work. They were
issued ration cards by the ashrams and are given free grains and other necessities every month. This scheme to stop conversion is in practice from the last around 2 decades. To save the youth who are being ruined due to the lustful festivals like valentine’s day, in 2006 Pujya Bapu Ji initiated celebrations of Matri-Pitri Pujan Diwas (Parents’ worship day) on 14th February. Pujya Bapu ji felt that, due to the blind imitation of Western culture there has been a steep rise in the incidences of alcoholism, suicide, and other immoral activities, especially among the youth during the last week of December. To rescue the youth from this debauchery and denigration, Pujya Bapu Ji came up with the idea of worshipping a sacred Tulsi plant (Holy basil). So, with a view to awaken the cultural pride of the India and to save the countrymen from mental slavery, in 2013, he initiated celebration of Tulsi poojan on 25th December. What to Do before Mantra-Japa? As per Pujya Bapuji’s
18 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021
satsang discourse, one should do the following before Mantra-japa: (1) An exercise of Tanka Vidya (Nodding head back & forth): Do Tanka Vidya exercise twice before starting japa every day. This will help in checking the habitual wandering of the mind: open the door at the mouth of the Sushumna Nadi and help with the positive impact of japa on breathing, and of the latter on mind. Thus, you would get highway to the practice of japa. Procedure of the TankaVidya exercise: Inhale deeply, close the lips, and node the head back & forth, while chanting the AUM sound by the throat. (2) Before sitting for japa, jump on your toes occasionally and perform kirtan (devotional chanting) for some time, followed by a dance for a minute or two. (3) Tilaka: The tilaka, i.e. the sacred mark of sandalwood paste or sindoor (vermilion), worn on the forehead between two eyebrows develops one’s Ajna-Chakra, thus increasing the efficiency of the Pineal gland. This increases one’s intellectual faculty and the power of Sattva (i.e.purity); and Vichara-Shakti (power of
enquiry) too. Hence it is very beneficial to put tilaka from spiritual as well scientific perspective. (4) Pranayama: If the sadhka performs pranayama before japa, his power of concentration will increase. Perform mantra-japa with the Mala after that. माला मझ ु से लड़ पड़ी, तंू क्यों बिसरा मोय। बिना शस्त्र के सरु मा, लड़ता दे खा न कोय।। “Mala admonished me saying,” Why did you forgot me? No hero is ever seen fighting without his weapons,” What are the obstacles encountered by a Japaka? There are six major obstacles encountered by a japaka which are: (1) Nindra (sleep): While sitting for sadhana, one starts to feel sleepy and when trying to fall asleep, one doesn’t get sleep. (2) Tandra: In this state one doesn’t actually fall sleep but goes into a half-asleep statue or drowsiness: without even realising the number of rounds of mala that has been completed. This is called subtle sleep, i.e. Tandra. (3) Aalasya (laziness): (At times) one feels too lazy to perform sadhana, thinking let’s do it sometime later, not right away……’ This too is an obstacle. (4) Manorajya: When we sit for japa with the mala (i.e. rosary), the mind wanders hither-thither. So we put the mala back thinking that – “I cant set my mind on japa…..’ While sitting for devotional practice at home, we think of temple and vice versa. Similarly, while at work, we think of mala and vice versa. This is what is called Manorajya. (5) Laya: At times, the mind gets Laya (dissolution) into Prakriti. In such a situation, one doesn’t get the direct experience of the Self; it is the mind that undergoes dissolution instead, and one feels that he/she has meditated. On coming out of meditation, one starts to yawn. So actually, this is not meditation; its rather Laya. On coming out of actual meditation, one feels freshness and cheerfulness, with divine thoughts arising
in the mind; but this is not the case in (in the state of Laya) (6) Rasaswada: While performing sadhana, one starts to experience some happiness (and feels elated) and the mind keeps enjoying the same, thereby losing track of the primary objective. Methods to overcome these six obstacles. In order to overcome Manorajya and Laya, one should chant ‘AUM…..’ in elongated fashion. Beware of Rasaswada too and always remain discriminative. Be vigilant all the time. In order to overcome gross sleep, one should take food in moderation and perform Yoga postures (asanas); whereas, to overcome subtle sleep, i.e. Tandra, one should perform Pranayama. In order to overcome Aalasya, one should perform selfless acts. Selfless service will remove aalasya, and gradually the mind will get absorbed in sadhana. Even pranayamas and asanas are helpful in removing laziness or Aalasya.” Other obstacles (1) Past impressions: When you will sit down for japa, a succession of thoughts will arise. Your mind will entertain unnecessary thoughts of various types but do not be perturbed by them. The impression of past experiences will be brought to the surface. Allow it to be happen but do not leave japa. (2) Envy, etc: One bearing a grudge against others will not get success in his devotional practice. (3) One, who is covetous of other’s wealth for prosperity, commits adultery, is a traitor, entertains thoughts about others does not know the glory of divine joy otherwise divine joy purifies the heart of one who does japa of the divine name. Devotion to God attracts God. Stay alert and vigilant always. Notice the obstacles of sadhna and remove them by proper measures and keep advancing constantly on the path of your goal of Godrealization. If your mind is not
focused on Japa…. Sometimes people fail to concentrate their mind on Mantra japa and decide to do it only when the mind will focus. This is not appropriate. Once a man went to learn how to swim and while learning he swallowed a lot of water through his mouth and nose. He came out of water and swore, “I will not step into the river unless I learn how to swim.” So, will he learn to swim on a bed, or a national highway? Even to learn to swim, one will have to step into the water. This alone can help him learn to swim. Similarly, even if you fail to focus your mind on japa, keep doing it. With the gradual increase in the earning of the religious merits by chanting the divine Name, the vices of one’s mind will be eradicated enabling him to get divine joy, thereby removing worldly passions.
Mantra & Protective Armour to remove obstacles and difficulties: (1) Mantra-Technique: To remove obstacles on the path of sadhana do Japa of the mantra ‘Om Namo Sarvaarthasaadhini Swaahaa.’ After doing japa of this mantra, take a little water in your hand and pour it all around your asana in the form of a circle. Just doing this will remove all obstacles leaving you, beloved of Lord, and divine joy. (2) Spiritual armour: Doing japa of the divine Name charges the environment with divine joy, bliss, and purity which removes the thought pollution prevalent in it. A divine armour is prepared by the practice of Japa which protects the Japaka (who does japa) from various lower elements and helps the sadhk advance on the path of spiritual and material progress. This method of wearing the protective armour is delineated by Pujya Bapu Ji (To be continued in next issue of The Brisbane Indian Times……..) Shishir Sangeet concert presented by Queensland Sangeet Mela Association QLD Sangeet Mela Association (QSMA) continued their series of mini Sangeet Melas with an evening of beautiful Hindustani classical music featuring vocal, surbahar and sitar, at Finnish Hall on Saturday 26th June, entitled "Shishir Sangeet" to mark the transition to winter. In a time of rapid changes and event cancellations, we were very lucky to have been able to experience live music from top local artists. The evening opened with the delightful voice of Dr Mansey Kinarivala Gandhi, accompanied on tabla by Shen Flindell and on harmonium by Joseph Nand. Mansey presented Raga Abhogi in jhaptaal (10 matras) and teentaal (16 matras), followed by a tarana and raga mala. After the interval, Dr Indranil Chatterjee treated the audience to Raga Shree, firstly in chautaal (12 matras) on surbahar, whose deep resonant tones are a rare treat to hear, and then in ara-chautaal (14 matras) on the sitar, with very exciting rapid taans and tihais all presented with aplomb. Tabla accompanist Shen Flindell interspersed the performance with dynamic
solos to good audience response. It was wonderful to see a large and diverse audience with many people of all backgrounds deeply absorbed in the performances. We look forward to future Indian classical events from QSMA. Many thanks to the QSMA team - Shen (organiser), Umesh (association president, catering sponsor), Sanjeev, Jesinthan, and Sharujan - for making this event possible.

Jitendra Deo President ASQ This mantra states that sages,
wise persons and those desirous of bliss join their soul including the mind, and intellect with the Supreme Sage God so that the mind becomes tranquil and the person becomes blissful and enlightened with spiritual knowledge directly from God, the Source of all true knowledge. This conscious joining of the soul with Supreme Consciousness i.e. God is true Upasana or yoga, everything. Sages and wise persons have been doing such Upasana since time immemorial. This mantra emphasizes that joining both the mind and the intellect to God is important. The mind is prone to all kinds of flights of imaginations and ideas as well as prone to blind faith and belief in all kinds of miracles promoted in the name of religion. Such blind faith in religion, however, often takes people astray and away from the truth, unless one also exercises intellect and common sense to differentiate right from wrong as well as what is plausible and what is unbelievable. The politically correct thing regarding religion, in many circles these days, is not to critically look at anyone’s beliefs regarding God, especially
one’s own religion. However, until one starts to combine wisdom and common sense with faith and devotion, one is very likely to be misdirected in one’s journey towards God i.e. Ishwar-StutiPrarthana-Upasana. In the second line, this mantra emphasizes there is only One God who may be called by different names but nevertheless remains only One. In this mantra, God is called Savita-the Creator of the universe and who as the inner voice of the soul, inspires us to follow the right path. He alone is the Supreme Divine Being who alone knows the karma (deeds) of every person and appropriately judges and rewards them. His greatness and praiseworthiness is endless, words are inadequate to describe it all. Sages (yogis) completely surrender themselves to God and do all their deeds in His service in a selfless manner. They do not get attached to money or material wealth but share it with others in a generous manner. This is the path to attain God and bliss, the aim of Upasana meditation or true yoga. Traditionally, Ishwar-StutiPrarthana-Upasana are performed two times a day, at dawn as well as at dusk. If dusk is not a suitable time, then the bedtime hour is acceptable. It is recommended that one should try to spend at least half an hour at each session in a quiet area of the house and avoid all distractions. If a person thinks that he/she cannot even spare half an hour from daily affairs, this individual needs to review his/her priorities to determine why it is not possible. If he/ she determines that certain personal or financial responsibilities are too great so that he/she cannot genuinely spare the half-hour of time, then

any amount of time is worthwhile. The personal spiritual rewards gained from the limited time spent in earnest will usually far outweigh those obtained from time devoted to secular affairs. As a person advances in Upasana he/ she is able to spend many hours at a stretch meditating about God. Also, He/she remains aware of God’s presence even while performing the daily activities of life. When performed in quiet solitude with faith and devotion, will help one obtain God’s grace and he/she will find peace, joy and bliss in life. One’s selfconfidence and courage are also
tremendously strengthened but not in an egotistical way. StutiPrarthana-Upasana helps one distinguish right from wrong and to follow the right path as well as seek truth without fear. Praying will often open a clear path when one is lost in a jungle of choices and distractions. A true devotee makes constant effort to improve his/her spiritual knowledge, contemplate on it and then live accordingly in a virtuous manner. A spiritually advanced person only prays for God’s grace and the well-being of mankind. He/she does not pray for specific personal gains or for material wealth because God will give all of
Yog and Meditation- Healing through knowledge The popular beliefs relating to
the mind, the body, and the soul, shows how Sankhya and Yoga differ. Although the words "spirit," "soul," "self," and "consciousness" may mean different things to different people, these are synonyms for one another. Many people believe that the human body is made up of matter, and that consciousness inside the body originates from this matter. This approach treats consciousness as an "emergent effect" of matter ,that is, if you have no matter, you cannot have consciousness. Others believe that the soul or consciousness is a separate entity from the physical, material body. In this view, the functions of the mind such as thoughts, emotions, and ego are part of this separate, nonphysical entity. Sankhya and Yoga agree with the second perspective, that the soul or consciousness is a separate entity from the gross material body. In addition, they offer that there is an internal body called the "subtle body," distinct from our external gross body. The mind which is the container of thoughts, emotions, and ego is part of this subtle body. The soul, however, is separate from both the gross body and the subtle
us what we need. Therefore, such a person prays only to follow God’s will and to do God’s work with a prayer such as, “Dear God, Thy will be done.” Please contact President:
body. The important thing to note is that the subtle and gross bodies are both made of matter while the soul is not composed of matter. It is an entirely different entity. This distinction is important, because it leads to the concept of the "Self. This Self is the soul, the indescribable core self of a person that is different from your physical body, different from what you know, even different from your personality, your impulses, and everything else that you might think makes you who you are. The Self is something deeper than all of those things, the core consciousness of a person. Our gross material body has the "brain," while our subtle body has the "mind." The Self is external to both of them. The benefit of practicing Patanjali’s yoga is that, by realizing that your Self is really in charge and distinct from your mind, you are freed from the miseries that come from attachment with mind and body. In fact, the Yoga Sutras states that all misery comes from our identification with the mind and the body. Brother of beloved Qld MP urges crowd to chase their dreams at touching memorial service The Premier and a former
prime minister were among the mourners who flocked to the Gabba to farewell a beloved MP who died of cancer. Aside from his family, there were three things Duncan Pegg loved in life: chocolate, cricket and politics. Family members of the beloved Queensland Labor MP paid tribute to his life before a crowd of brightly dressed mourners at the Gabba on Saturday morning. The Stretton MP succumbed to his battle with cancer earlier this month, just two months after he resigned from the government. Younger brother Graham said Duncan’s legacy would live on, paying tribute to his caring and intelligent sibling. Graham said Duncan’s love of politics was evident after he organised a mock parliament in the school classroom, assigning everyone portfolios to the delight of his classmates. Graham described cheeky memories of his older brother scoffing chocolate before being sick right before the family pulled out of the driveway on a trip – a feat that set a “new record” for his habitual carsickness.
He said his elder brother loved cricket so much he could remember details of “every match ever played”. “Mum and Dad bought Duncan down to Brisbane when he was about 12 to watch his first cricket match, right here at the Gabba,” Graham said. “It’s always been his special place. That’s the reason we’re all sitting here today.” Queensland Cricket chief executive officer Terry Svenson laid a jersey on the coffin on behalf of Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja, a close friend of Duncan’s until his death. “If you’re sitting here today with a dream, a goal, an idea, just like Duncan, get organised and set about achieving it,” Graham told the crowd. “Because if a boy from Rockhampton can be serving the most multicultural seat in Queensland parliament, rubbing shoulders with famous cricketers, albeit while enjoying out-of-date chocolate milk, then you can achieve anything too.” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk paid tribute to the “wonderful, wonderful man” who excelled at the “thrust and parry” of parliamentary debate.
She said he prided himself on the multiculturalism in his electorate and frequently spoke of the dignity and value of education and providing good jobs. Mr Pegg previously worked as a lawyer until his election in 2015. In April, Mr Pegg had told parliament he had to step away from his role with a heavy heart due to medical advice. “I do not want to leave this place and cease representing the community that I love, but I know the decision to resign is the right one,” he said. In his final address, Mr Pegg tearfully told Queensland parliament to consider the views of terminal illness patients when the time came to vote on the voluntary assisted dying legislation later this
year. “I speak as someone who has been fighting cancer for 18 months, who regularly attends a cancer centre and speaks to cancer patients with a terminal illness,” he said. “Let’s be very clear: people with terminal illnesses don’t want to die, they want to live; they fight to live every day. I personally fight to live every day. “However, if you are diagnosed terminal, then you are going to face death. People with terminal illnesses won’t have an option.” Former prime minister Kevin Rudd said Duncan “met death with great human dignity” while offering his condolences to the Pegg family. A younger Duncan had joined Mr Rudd’s team in
the federal seat of Griffith and the pair remained close friends until his death. Mr Rudd shared a text exchange he had with Duncan before his death and was touched when the Stretton MP asked him to speak at the memorial service. “Duncan was the standout, the class act … the reason was because Duncan was the genuine article, the
real deal,” Mr Rudd said. “He would always spontaneously go the extra mile, simply because he knew it was the right thing to do.” As an MP, Duncan served as chair of the Tourism Development and Environment Committee. In 2017 he received a public service award from the Queensland Intercultural Society.

THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021 — 27
The Hajj, the amazing journey of a lifetime By Ml. M. Nawaaz Ashrafi Unity is vividly observed
in the great pillar of Hajj, which is repeated every year and for which millions of Muslims gather from all over the world. They represent the Muslim ummah with all its different races, countries, colours, and languages. They gather in one place, at the same time, wearing the same garment and performing the same rites. They make one stand in the same monument. They proclaim the oneness of the Lord of the worlds, submit themselves to His law, and show their unity under His banner. They announce to the whole world that they are one nation although they come from different countries and homes. They perform the rites and stand in the open areas of Makkah, where bodies become close to each other, faces meet, hands shake, greetings exchange, tongues communicate, and hearts reconcile. They meet for the same purpose and intention. What unity is deeper than that one of the pilgrims when they stand at the mountain of 'Arafat with bare heads and simple white clothes? There is no difference between the rich and the poor, the ruler and the subject, men and women, Arabs and non-Arabs. All of them are the same, like the teeth of the hair comb. They direct themselves towards Allah, humble and submissive. "They hope for His Mercy and fear His Wrath" [Al-Isra', 17:57] This is their description when they make tawaf (circumambulation around the Ka'bah) and sa'y (going between the mountains of AsSafa and Al-Marwah), stay overnight at Muzdalifah and Mina, sacrifice animals, and throw stones. Similarly, this is their description when they perform the congregational prayer at the open areas or at the Holy Mosque. They pray behind one man (i.e. the imam) and supplicate to one God (i.e. Allah). They read one Book, the Qur'an, and direct themselves to one Qiblah, the Ka'bah, at the Holy Mosque. They perform the same rites of standing, sitting, bowing down, and prostration. It is a kind of unity that penetrates the hearts, and not only external appearances. This is unity in aim and direction, in sayings and deeds, an internal and external unity, through which they could feel the essence of the verse: "The believers are but a single brotherhood." [AlHujurat, 49:10]. Differences in social class, wealth, race, and color vanish within these feelings and rites. A pure and solemn atmosphere of brotherhood, serenity, affection, and love prevails. In a world engulfed in dispute and division, it is a great blessing for a person to have the ability to enjoy this atmosphere of complete peace. In a world where
discrepancy is the prevailing system, they (pilgrims) enjoy an atmosphere of equality. In the face of the world's grudges, hatred, and disputation-feelings all too characteristics of the modern life-pilgrims experience a feeling of love and harmony. Allah has imposed pilgrimage upon Muslims in a specific time each year, in one place, and in the same manner. Thus, they perform it in gatherings and not in scattered groups. They feel and see unity and brotherhood before their very eyes. Allah made their Hajj in the purest point, in the most sacred place, and in the best days, namely, the first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijjah. Accordingly, they experience the sacredness of the place, time, and situation. Hence, they know their position among other nations and feel Allah's blessing, as He granted them this straight and sound religion. He favored Muslims by bringing familiarity among their hearts and making them loving brothers and sisters. Hajj is a valuable opportunity for the public to meet the righteous scholars, so that they would benefit from their knowledge and be guided by their juristic opinions. It is also an occasion for Muslim scholars to meet with each other, so that they would know each other, discuss issues of theology, acquire jurisprudence in religion, and study the affairs of Muslims and provide solutions to their problems. It is a great chance for Muslim leaders, thinkers, and politicians to meet, to consult and to co-operate for the welfare of Islam and Muslims. Hajj is, indeed, the symbol of unity and monotheism! Praise be to Allah who has guided us to this. Never could we have found guidance, had it not been for the guidance of Allah. HAJJ, one of the five pillars of Islam, is obligatory on every adult Muslim once in his lifetime if he is financially and physically capable to undertake the journey. Allah (God in Arabic language) said in the Qur’an (God’s final revelation to mankind through Prophet Muhammad )ﷺ: And pilgrimage to the house is duty upon mankind owed to Allah for whoever can find a way there (Qur’an 3:97) Hajj rituals commemorate the events that took place during the time of Ibrahim (Abraham), one of the prophets of Allah. Ibrahim perfected his faith in Allah and showed complete reliance on God during the many trials and tribulations in his life. His life is worth reading about before going for Hajj or if you simply want to understand Hajj better. When Muslims perform Hajj, they are reminded of his powerful legacy which recharges their commitment to the religion and thus helps them attain pure faith in God.
28 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021
The fact that Hajj has been going on every year for thousands of years of human history shows that it has to be divinely legislated. Human beings are incapable of starting such a movement. Many of us who go for Hajj focus a lot in learning the rituals, and of course we must. However, preparing the heart for the pilgrimage should not be any less important. We must prepare our heart to attain the purpose of Hajj. Therefore, let’s look at the inner dimensions of Hajj, spiritual aspects that the pilgrimage reminds us of: Faith in God and that He is Only One This is called tawheed in Arabic. This is the heart of our belief. The moment pilgrims enter ihraam (ritual state to perform hajj), they start proclaiming the Talbiyah. Repeating the Talbiyah makes the heart firm on the fact that Allah is one and that there is no partner besides Him. He, our Creator, is sufficient for us and He alone is in control of everything. While repeating it, let’s remember what the proclamation indicates: the obligation to worship Allah alone and keep far away from Shirk(worshiping others along with Allah). Since Allah is Alone in His favours and His giving, having no partners, then likewise He is Alone in His Tawheed, not having any equal. [1] Obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ No ibaadah (worship) is valid unless it coincides with the commands of Allah and the Messenger ﷺ. Hajj is a worship prescribed by Allah on mankind so we listen and obey. The ultimate purpose behind every worship is obedience to Allah. And Hajj is a manifestation of obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. Piety Taqwa is translated as piety in English. Piety is the fruit of obedience and is also a purpose in itself. Piety is again to enjoin what Allah and the Prophet ﷺordered to enjoin and to abstain from what they asked us to abstain from. In Hajj, Muslims practice piety from the time they decide to enter the state of performing the pilgrimage. The pilgrims also abstain from what is normally permissible outside Hajj. The result of this piety is that they return with their good deeds accepted and blessed to a new life full of Emaan and Taqwa, full of goodness and steadfastness, beautified with an eagerness to be obedient to Allah. [2] Hereafter Anything that reminds one of the Hereafter, the Judgement Day, is of tremendous benefit because the goal is to succeed there. And Hajj is an excellent reminder of the Hereafter. The two pieces of white cloth that pilgrims wear to embark
on the journey leaving behind all their worldly possessions reminds them of death and their final journey to Allah. When pilgrims gather and stand in Arafah, they are reminded of how all human beings will stand on the Day of Judgment before Allah and be accounted for their deeds. Pilgrims pray and seek forgiveness at Arafah and return back hoping their sins are forgiven and that they will change for the better. Honoring the symbols of Allah Whatever Almighty God has deemed sacred is sacred. The things and places that Allah has deemed sacred are the symbols of Allah. During Hajj, pilgrims honor, exalt and love the symbols of Allah and what He deems is sacred. Allah says (what means): “...And whoever honors the Symbols of Allah indeed, it is from the piety of hearts.” [Qur’an, 22: 32] [3] Muslim unity Hajj is a beautiful scene of the unity of all believers regardless of their classes, backgrounds, cultures, or languages. It’s a scene worth watching and feeling. Muslims from around the world, rich and poor, stand as one community wearing two pieces of white cloth, manifesting the fact that Allah only sees what is in the hearts. No one is higher in status in front of God except by virtue of good deeds. Hajj unites the hearts and gathers them to obey Allah, be sincere to Him, follow His Shariah, and abide by His commands and prohibitions. This is why Allah says (translated): “Verily, the first House (of worship) appointed for mankind was that at Bakkah (Makkah), full of blessing, and a guidance for the ‘Alamîn (mankind and jinn).” [Qur’an, 3:96] [4] Patience and certainty in Allah Hajj teaches us patience and having trust in Allah, especially during its rituals like the Sa’i. It reminds us of the trials of Hajar, wife of Ibrahim A.S. It reminds us of her patience and certainty in obeying Allah’s commands. She was commanded to stay with her baby in a desert without food and water. People without faith would consider it an unimaginable thing to do. However, she was certain that if this was Allah’s command, He would take care of her. Allah honored her and her baby with the miracle of Zamzam water in the midst of the desert, which till today continues to quench the thirst of millions of people. This is just one example. Hajj is no doubt a difficult journey and it used to more difficult in the past. Muslims must practice patience and have certainty in Allah for all their affairs. This will benefit them in life after Hajj. Connecting with
the past Hajj brings to mind the migration of Ibrahim (AS) as well as the divine command to put his son for sacrifice. When Ibrahim (AS) showed full obedience and was ready to sacrifice, Allah sent a ram from paradise to be sacrificed instead of his son Isma’eel – the purpose was to test Ibrahim’s faith, and indeed the prophets are tested the most. So beloved to Allah was Ibrahim’s piety that He honored Ibrahim with an incredible status – a role model for prophets and people to follow until the Day of Judgment. Hajj is a commemoration of Ibrahim’s outstanding acts of obedience and the pilgrimage will continue until the Last Day. Hajj also reminds us of how Ibrahim and his son Isma’eel built the Ka’bah and Ibrahim’s call to people to perform Hajj. Little did they know that the building God was asking them to build in an uninhabited land was to become the main house of God’s worship for the entire earth. Hajj also revives the memory of Hajjatul-Wada‘ (the farewell pilgrimage)of the last and final prophet, Muhammad ﷺwho left his followers with advice that will keep them guided on the straight path until the end of time. TEN AMAZING FACTS ABOUT THE KAABA There is no place on Earth as venerated, as central or as holy to as many people as Makkah. By any objective standard, this valley in the Hijaz region of Arabia is the most celebrated place on Earth. Thousands circle the sacred Kaaba at the centre of the Haram sanctuary 24 hours a day. Millions of homes are adorned with pictures of it and over a billion face it five times a day. The Kaaba is the epicenter of Mecca. The cube shaped building is at the heart of the most well-known real estate in the history of mankind; it is shrouded in black and its fair share of mystery. Here are just a few things that most people may not know about the Kaaba: It has been reconstructed several timesgreats. The Kaaba that we see today is not exactly the same Kaaba that was constructed by Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail From time to time, it has needed rebuilding after natural and man-made disasters. Of course, we all know of the major reconstruction that took place during the life of the Prophet before he became a Prophet . This is the occasion when the Prophet averted major bloodshed by his quick thinking on how to place the Black Stone using a cloth that every tribe could lift up. Since then, there has
been an average of one major reconstruction every few centuries. The last renovation took place in 1996 and was extremely thorough, leading to the replacement of many of the stones and re-strengthening the foundations and a new roof. This is likely to be the last reconstruction for many centuries (inshaAllah) as modern techniques mean that the building is more secure and stable than ever before. It used to have two doors … and a window The original Kaaba used to have a door for entrance and another for exit. For a considerable period of time it also had a window situated to one side. The current Kaaba only has one door and no window. It used to be multicoloured We are so used to the Kaaba being covered in the trademark black Kiswah with gold banding that we can’t imagine it being any other colour. However, this tradition seems to have started at the time of the Abbasids (whose household colour was black) and before this the Kaaba was covered in multiple colours including green, red and even white. The keys are in the hands of one family At the time of the Prophet , each aspect to do with the rites of Hajj was in the hands of different sub-groups of the Quraish. Every one of these would eventually lose control of their guardianship of a particular rite except one. On the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet was given the keys to the Kaaba and instead of keeping it in his own possession; he returned them back to the Osman ibn Talha ® of the Bani Shaiba family. They had been the traditional key keepers of the Kaaba for centuries; and the Prophet confirmed them in that role till the end of time by these words “Take it, O Bani Talha, eternally up to the Day of Resurrection, and it will not be taken from you unless by an unjust, oppressive tyrant.” Whether Caliph, Sultan or King – the most powerful men in the world have all had to bow to the words of the Prophet and ask permission from this small Makkan family before they can enter the Kaaba. It used to be open to everyone Until recently, the Kaaba was opened twice a week for anyone to enter and pray. However, due to the rapid expansion in the number of pilgrims and other factors, the Kaaba is now opened only twice a year for dignitaries and exclusive guests only. Watch the video attached here to witness the doors of the Kaaba being opened (at 50 seconds) – and the simultaneous gasps of a Million people as they cry out at this auspicious moment.

THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021 — 29
CoreLogic: Australian dwelling values finish the financial year 13.5% higher, but a loss of momentum is clear National home values rose 1.9% in June, taking annual growth to 13.5% for the financial year. The growth in Australian dwelling values was led by houses, which rose 15.6% over the year, compared to a 6.8% lift in unit values. CoreLogic Head of Research for Australia, Eliza Owen noted “This is the highest annual rate of growth seen across the Australian residential property market since April 2004, when the early 2000’s housing boom was winding down after a period of exceptional growth. However, there are some markets where performance is starting to ease more notably.” Each of the capital cities saw an uplift in dwelling values in June, ranging from a 3.0% rise in Hobart to a more subdued 0.2% lift in Perth. The performance gap has narrowed between regional Australia and the capital cities, though regional Australia did outperform slightly in monthly growth terms, rising 2.0% through June compared to 1.9% across the combined capital cities. Darwin maintained the highest annual rate of growth across the capital cities, increasing 21.0% in value over the financial year, followed by Hobart (19.6%). Across regional Australia, regional NSW had the highest annual growth in dwelling values (21.1%), followed by regional Tasmania (20.8%). Ms Owen reaffirmed the strong demand-side factors underlying growth. “Before the recent uncertainty of growing COVID-19 case numbers, there were plenty of demand-side factors driving housing market growth through the first half of 2021. “In May, the unemployment rate fell to 5.1%, and the underutilisation rate fell to 12.5%, the lowest level since February 2013. Consumer confidence remained elevated through June, although down from the recent April highs. Elevated savings accumulated through COVID-restrictions last year, along with a more confident consumer sector, has encouraged consumption of larger goods, such as housing. This has all occurred against a back-drop of continued low mortgage rates, which is one of the most significant demand drivers.” In addition to these strong demand conditions, Ms Owen noted total advertised stock remains relatively low. “The latest listings count from CoreLogic indicates that in the 28 days to June 27th, total advertised stock remained 24.4% below the five-year average. This dynamic of strong consumer demand, and low housing supply, continues to create
some urgency among buyers.” Despite another month of strong gains, there are signs that some heat is coming out of the market. The monthly change in Australian home values of 1.9% sits well above the decade average (which is 0.4%). However, this month’s growth rate is down 30 basis points from May 2021, and 90 basis points from a recent peak in March 2021. The only capital city to see a further increase in the monthly growth rate was Canberra, where dwelling values were 2.3% higher over June, compared with a 1.7% gain in May. Across the capital cities, a loss of momentum was most evident across Perth and Darwin. For Perth dwellings, the monthly growth rate in values had averaged 1.4% between January and May 2021, but fell to 0.2% through June. Across Darwin, the monthly growth rate in dwelling values averaged 2.1% between January and May, but was just 0.8% through June. “The key to understanding the softer performance in these resource-based markets may be a slightly different supply-demand dynamic compared to the other capital cities and regions,” says Ms Owen. “CoreLogic monitors a ‘sales to new listings’ ratio, which divides the monthly volume of settled sales by new listings brought to market. For the past three months, the sales to new listings ratio has averaged 1.1 across Darwin and Perth. While the implication is that there is 1.1 sales for each new listing, which could be enough to elicit further growth in dwelling values, these are the lowest sales to new listings results of the capital city markets.” Softer growth rates are also emerging at the ‘high end’ of the market. Across the top 25% of dwelling values in the combined capital cities market, growth in dwelling values in the June quarter was 8.0%, down from 9.2% in the three months to May. While this 8.0% uplift was still the highest seen among the value tiers analysed, the growth rate also had the largest month-on-month deceleration. According to Ms Owen “This easing in the pace of growth at the top end of the market is another clear sign of a shift in momentum. The rest of the market tends to follow movements at the high end, and this is the first time in nine months that the high-tier growth rate has not accelerated.” Sales volumes have remained elevated through to the end of the financial year. CoreLogic estimates that in the year to June 2021, there were approximately 582,900 transactions nationally. This is the highest annual
30 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, July, 2021
sales volume observed since February 2004. Across the greater capital city and rest of state markets, modelled sales volumes were highest across Sydney (110,064), Melbourne (89,234) and regional Queensland (80,549). Every greater capital city and rest of state region saw double digit growth in annual sales volumes, with the exception of Hobart (where sales volumes fell -0.6% over the year), and regional Tasmania (where annual growth in sales volumes was 8.6%). New listings have risen alongside prices, but total stock on the market remains low. CoreLogic estimates that there were approximately 126,320 fresh listings advertised for sale in the three months to June, 7.9% above the previous five-year average for the June quarter. However, in the same period, there were 167,450 sales nationally. This shows there was more than one sale for every new listing added to market. The dynamic of sales out-stripping new listings has been a persistent trend through 2021. The result is total advertised stock levels remaining approximately -25% below the five-year average. As noted last month, the current state of housing supply and demand has seen relatively high auction clearance rates, and favourable selling conditions. At the national level, typical days on market increased slightly to 29 (up from a recent low of 25 days) in the three months to June, and vendor discounting rates remained very tight at -2.7%. Ms Owen says “It is difficult to say whether this dynamic will be maintained in the coming weeks amid lockdown conditions in parts of Australia. Sales volumes are likely to decline, but new listings added to market also tend to decline during lockdowns, as properties are harder to sell. The current dynamic in supply and demand is more likely to be shifted by significant changes to demand, whether from a change in lending conditions, or weaker economic outcomes amid the current rise of COVID-19 case numbers.” Rent values continue to see strong growth, though gross rental yields are compressing. In the year to June, Australian rent values increased 6.6%; the strongest annual appreciation in rents since February 2009. The highest annual growth in rent values was across Darwin, where rents have increased 21.8% across the dwelling market. This was followed by Perth (16.7%). “As with national home values, much of the increase in rental rates may be
associated with government stimulus, increased household savings and a strong economic recovery from COVID restrictions. Rent value increases may also be a function of more subdued investor activity between late 2017 and mid2020, and the resulting lower rental supply, as well as more demand deflecting towards rental markets in areas where home ownership has become less attainable due to affordability challenges. “Even the worst affected rental markets showed a more defined recovery trend through June. Across Sydney, unit rents were - 1.1% lower over the year to June. This is up from a recent trough in the annual growth rate of -5.7% in the year to December 2020. In Melbourne, the annual change in unit rent values was -6.4%, recovering slightly from year-on-year declines of -8.2% in the 12 months to March 2021,” says Ms Owen. Due to property value increases outpacing rents, gross rental yields have compressed further through June. Across the combined capital cities, gross rental yields hit a record low 3.1%, and combined regional Australia has also seen a fresh record low of 4.5%. ABS housing finance figures to April have shown a strong lift in investor financing since the start of the year, albeit off low levels. The return of investors to the Australian dwelling market may help to gradually ease rental conditions. Overall, the housing market has shown a remarkable turnaround from initial expectations around COVID-19. However, the housing market has
clearly lost some growth momentum. Persistently high housing value growth rates are proving unsustainable, from both an affordability perspective, and renewed headwinds amid a lockdown in Sydney and other parts of the country. COVID-19 restrictions will impact transaction activity. Observation of CoreLogic analytics through the pandemic has revealed trends around housing market performance which can inform expectations for the coming weeks. Firstly, there has been resilience in property values. Nationally, values saw a peak-to-trough decline of just -2.1% through 2020, before a recovery trend in October 2020. This was due to low interest rates, fewer listings, and institutional responses. For example, mortgage repayment deferrals were likely a key factor in reducing new listings added to the market, which may have otherwise been fuelled by an inability to make mortgage payments. Secondly, transaction activity was more volatile. From March to April of 2020, the volume of sales nationally fell -33.9%. New listings added to the market fell -44.7%. However, sales across Australia rose sharply from May 2020, as social distancing restrictions began to ease nationally, and soared through the final quarter of 2020, as restrictions across Melbourne also started to lift. The housing sector seems to have demonstrated ‘catch-up’ consumption as social distancing restrictions have eased. Through circuit-breaker lockdowns, CoreLogic has
observed short, sharp falls in sales and listings, followed by a swift recovery in transaction activity. There has been little impact observed on prices. Ms Owen concludes “The question is not what impact short lockdowns have on the housing market; there seems to be relatively little impact. Instead, outcomes for the housing market and industry will depend upon how long lockdown conditions last across parts of the country, and whether some of the institutional responses offered through 2020 are reinstated if an extended lockdown occurs.” Affordability constraints and the potential for tighter lending conditions and rising mortgage rates remain the primary headwinds for property market performance. Even without recent developments of COVID-19 in Australia, it is clear that the housing market is losing momentum as affordability constraints build. More expensive credit, or credit that is harder to obtain, could further shift market dynamics. Already through June, several of the major banks have forecast cash rate increases earlier than has previously been indicated by the RBA. A sooner-than-expected uplift in the cash rate would bring forward mortgage rate rises, and reduce demand for credit. Furthermore, off the back of APRA writing to major lenders to ensure proactive risk management in home lending, there have been early signs of more conservative home loan assessments. Any reduction in credit availability is likely to contribute to a downside shift in market conditions.

Uttarakhand BJP meeting today after Tirath Singh Rawat's resignation Tirath Singh Rawat hinted that he resigned because the Election Commission was unlikely to hold by-elections due to Covid-19. Uttarakhand BJP unit will hold its legislature party meeting on Saturday to decide on a new leader after Tirath Singh Rawat resigned as the hill state's chief minister. Uttarakhand BJP unit president Madan Kaushik said the legislative party will meet at 3pm and Narendra Singh Tomar will be the central observer at the meeting. “The new leader will be an MLA,” Kaushik said. State BJP media incharge Manveer Singh Chauhan said all party MLAs
have been asked to attend the meeting. Tirath Singh Rawat resigned on Friday after just four months in office in the shortest term for a Uttarakhand CM. Rawat, who
took over as the chief minister on March 10 this year, resigned days after he met the BJP central leadership, including Union home minister Amit Shah and party chief JP Nadda. Rawat's
resignation also comes ahead of the Uttarakhand assembly elections scheduled to be held in early 2022. Rawat resigned from his post on Friday night and submitted his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya hours after he addressed a press conference in the state capital of Dehradun. He said that the decision was right amid what he said was a "constitutional crisis" in the state. “I must express my gratitude to the party’s central leadership which has given many responsibilities from time to time. I have been MLC, MLA, MP, party state president and recently chief minister,” he said after

variant in India, it said. Against asymptomatic Covid-19 patients, Covaxin provides an efficacy of 63.6%, Bharat Biotech said at the conclusion of its Phase-3 efficacy trial. Here are the overall efficacy rates of Covaxin in a gist, as claimed by Bharat Biotech in its pre-print analysis. Asymptomatic cases: 63% Covaxin efficacy Mild, moderate, and severe cases: 78% Covaxin efficacy Delta variant: 65% Covaxin efficacy Severe Covid-19 cases: 93% Covaxin efficacy The Covaxin Phase-3 analysis, published on the
medRxiv pre-print server, was reportedly conducted across 25 hospitals in India as trial sites. The large-scale final analysis deployed a double-blind, randomised, multi-center clinical trial, using a sponsor-supplied randomisation scheme where volunteers received two intramuscular doses of either the Covid-19 vaccine or a placebo -- four weeks apart. It consisted of 25,800 volunteers from the age group of 18 to 98 years, the report said. The vaccine was approved for emergency use in the Indian population in January, and the Hyderabad-based company had then said it would release phase III data
by March. The release was since pushed back on several occasions. It had earlier shared the data with Indian drug regulators, however, the data regarding the multiple analyses had not been released until now. Earlier, Bharat Biotech's US partner Ocugen had reported similar findings regarding Covaxin, adding that adverse events reported in the study were low. Only 12.4% of the subjects experienced commonly known side-effects, it said. Both adverse events and severe adverse events reported in the vaccine group were found at similar rates to the placebo group, the company added. Covaxin, along with the Oxford UniversityAstrazeneca shot, has been used since the beginning of India's nationwide vaccine drive against the viral disease on January 16. Russia's Sputnik V was given emergency use authorisation (EUA) in April, while US pharmaceutical firm Moderna's mRNA-based vaccine on Tuesday received approval to be used here.
Govt giving ₹4,000 to all under Covid scheme? Here's the truth The Centre has announced a slew of measures amid the economic distress during the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions put in place to curb the rising cases of Covid-19 across the country. A WhatsApp message claiming that the government is giving ₹4,000 to everyone under a Covid relief scheme is false and there is no such financial assistance being extended, the Press Information Bureau has tweeted. "It is being claimed
in a WhatsApp message that the Indian government is, under a Corona Care Fund Scheme, giving a sum of ₹4,000 to everyone. This is a false claim. The government is running no such scheme," PIB's Fact Check handle said in a tweet in Hindi. The tweet comes as Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on June 28 announced eight new schemes, including a ₹1.1 lakh crore loan guarantee scheme for the Covid-

The government has announced a slew of measures amid the economic distress during the coronavirus pandemic and the restrictions put in place to curb the rising cases of Covid-19 across the country. Before this, PIB Fact Check rejected claims that Prime
Minister Narendra Modi has announced a nationwide lockdown from July 1 till July 31 and also declared the "beginning of the third wave" of the pandemic. PIB Fact Check clarified that no such announcement was made by PM Modi and asked citizens to be wary of such viral posts. "The Prime Minister has not made any such announcement. Kindly be wary of such misleading messages. The said claim is fake," PIB Fact Check tweeted.
submitting his resignation to the governor. "I thank my party president JP Nadda, home minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the core of my heart,” he added. The senior BJP leader hinted that he resigned because the Election Commission was unlikely to hold by-elections due to Covid-19. A CM, if not a member of the assembly, needs to be elected within six months of assuming the post. However, a poll official indicated that no request was made to hold a bypoll and suggested there were precedents that may have permitted it.
Tirath Singh Rawat's stint was marred by controversy, including his decision to allow the Mahakumbh amid a surge in cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), and large-scale fraud in testing during the holy event. His comments on women’s clothing and that the waters of the Ganga could prevent infections also invited criticism. Rawat, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Garhwal in 2019, was appointed Uttarakhand's ninth CM after Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned from the top job post amid infighting in the state unit. The BJP has 56 MLAs in the 70-member house.

FOCUS ON FIJI 54% of the target population has received at least one dose of AstraZeneca while 8.8 % of Fijians are now fully vaccinated
Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong says 315,898 adults in Fiji have received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and 51,408 people have received their second doses. Doctor Fong says this means that 54% of the target population has received at least one dose and 8.8 % are now fully vaccinated nationwide. Doctor Fong also says they need all Fijians to know the severe symptoms
of COVID-19, which include difficulty breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, severe headache for a few days, new confusion, inability to wake up or stay awake; and pale, gray, or blue-coloured skin, lips or nail beds. If you or a loved one have any of these symptoms please go immediately to your nearest medical facility. Please do not hide your symptoms and do not focus on home remedies.
Majority of COVID breaches in the last 24hrs linked to alcohol & kava consumption Three arrested for not wearing a mask in public 34 of the fifty-three arrests recorded over the last 24 hours for breach of health and curfew restrictions were directly linked to the consumption of alcohol. 10 of the arrests were linked to kava consumption while three people were arrested for failing to wear a mask in a public place within a containment zone. In the Western Division, of the 26 reports, 12 were linked to the drinking of alcohol. Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu says people were either arrested for breach of social gathering restrictions, being involved in a drinking party or were found loitering in a public place heavily intoxicated during curfew hours in Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka. One report recorded in Namaka involved a 17-yearold boy who was drinking with three others. 10 men were arrested for breaching social gathering restrictions as they were drinking yaqona in Itatoka, Ba. In the Southern Division, 11 arrests were linked to the consumption of alcohol. Three people were arrested in Daya Street, Vatuwaqa, five were arrested drinking liquor at
Veiraisi Settlement while three men were arrested from Kali Place, Tacirua. In the Eastern Division, of the 14 reports recorded, 11 were linked to the consumption of alcohol and breach of social gathering. Six men were arrested as they were found drinking liquor at the back of a hardware shop in Nakasi while three men were arrested at Koroibici Settlement, Koronivia. Three men were arrested and charged for failing to comply with orders as they were seen walking along JP Maharaj Street in Nakasi without wearing masks. Tudravu says it is upsetting to see the high number of reports for breach of social gatherings despite the repeated requests and warnings of its dangers. He says those who continue to disregard the advisories and warnings are being selfish because they are risking the lives of their loved ones over a few hours of fun that only they stand to benefit from. Tudravu says we should never forget that those hours of fun could ultimately turn into days and weeks of suffering, pain or even worse the loss of life.

Fiji now has 4,496 active COVID-19 cases in isolation and 27 deaths from the deadly virus We are also sadly seeing people with severe disease die at home or on the way to hospital - Dr Fong
Fiji now has 4,496 active COVID-19 cases in isolation and 27 deaths from the deadly virus. Permanent Secretary for Health, Doctor James Fong confirms there are 386 new cases of COVID-19 and 2 COVID-19 deaths to report for the 24 hour period that ended at 8am today. Five of the new cases are contacts of cases who are undergoing 14 days of quarantine in quarantine facilities in Nadi. The rest of the cases are from the Suva-Nausori containment zone. A full breakdown of areas of interest has been published online on the Ministry’s COVID-19 dashboard. You can check out the link on our website, fijivillage. Doctor Fong says the first death from COVID-19 is a 66-year-old woman from Valelevu who was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the emergency department at CWM Hospital. He says this means she died at home or on the way to hospital. Her family reported that she had been feeling unwell at home for a few days. She was not vaccinated.
The second death was reported yesterday as being under investigation to determine if the cause of death was COVID-19. This was a 24-year-old woman from Wainibokasi admitted at the CWM Hospital for treatment of a serious non-COVID related medical condition, and later tested positive in hospital . After investigation, her doctors have determined that her death was caused by COVID-19 and not the prior medical condition. She was not vaccinated. Doctor Fong says the death of another person who tested positive for COVID-19 is also currently under investigation to determine if COVID-19 was the cause of death.
There have now been 27 deaths due to COVID-19 in Fiji, with 25 of these deaths during the outbreak that started in April this year. Fiji has also recorded 12 COVID-19 positive patients who died from the serious medical conditions that they had before they contracted COVID-19. 3 deaths are under investigation to determine the cause of death. There have been 131 new recoveries reported since the last update. Doctor Fong says there have been 5569 cases during the outbreak that started in April 2021. We have recorded a total of 5639 cases in Fiji since the first
case was reported in March 2020, with 1101 recoveries. 166,501 samples have been tested since this outbreak started in April 2021, with 209,362 tested since testing began in early 2020. 3240 tests have been reported for 1st July. The national 7-day average daily test positivity is 10.2% and continues on an upward trend. The 7-day average of new cases per day has increased to 330 cases per day or 373 cases per million population per day. Doctor Fong says as expected, with the increasing case numbers we are also seeing increasing numbers of people with severe disease, and more deaths in the SuvaNausori containment zone. He says of great concern is the people with severe disease that come to a medical facility in the late stages of their illness . Doctor Fong says we are also sadly seeing people with severe disease die at home or on the way to hospital, before our medical teams have a chance to administer what could potentially be life saving treatment.

Australia to halve... CONTD. FROM PG 01 through commercial flights, the Commonwealth will directly seek to mitigate that by upping, wherever possible, those commercially facilitated flights that the Commonwealth is pursuing. “I would note in recent days and weeks that we have seen demand for those facilitated flights run by the Commonwealth having actually dipped and so those flights we have been bringing in have not been full because there hasn’t been the demand to take those up. “I suspect that will change now with the commercial flight restrictions, then we will see that supply being fully taken up.” The arrival cap decrease will be implemented by July 14, but Morrison flagged some states might move to reduce their cap earlier. “But as you imagine, we want to try to minimise the disruption for people with already planned flights over the next couple of weeks,” he said. The cap is expected to remain at 50 per cent until at least the start of next year. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian earlier said her heart goes out to the thousands of Australians who are still waiting to come home. “Just because you reduce
the number of people coming in, doesn’t mean outbreaks aren’t going to happen,” she said ahead of Morrison’s announcement.
Pathway out of COVID Morrison also announced a new plan out of the pandemic that will be COVID being treated as “an infectious disease like any other in our community”. The four-phase plan will see lockdowns being used “only as a last resort”. Australia is currently in the first phase, “the suppression phase”, Morrison said. The next phase will be reached “once we reach a
threshold of vaccination to be determined by the modelling process we’re currently engaged in”. “The third phase is called the consolidation phase,” he said. “That is to manage COVID-19 consistent with public health management of other infectious diseases. “That basically means that the hospitalisation and fatality rates, that you would see from COVID-19, would be like the flu.” Morrison said the fourth stage could be described as Australia being “back to normal”, where measures may include opening the border to vaccinated people.

Hepatitis Can’t Wait! “Hepatitis Can’t Wait” is the theme for this year’s World Hepatitis Day, which takes place every year on the 28th of July. This day is to raise awareness of the need for testing, monitoring, treating and supporting those impacted by viral hepatitis. Worldwide one person dies every 30 seconds due to a hepatitis related illness. It is particularly important for migrants (permanent or temporary), because the majority of people living with hepatitis B in Australia were born overseas, and 30% of people with hepatitis B don’t know they have it. Chronic Hepatitis B along with chronic hepatitis C (chronic means people having hepatitis for more than 6 months) are a major health problem in Australia and in the world, they are responsible for more than
80% of hepatitis related deaths worldwide. Chronic hepatitis B and C can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. As most people with hepatitis B don’t show symptoms for many years, it is critical to get tested as early as possible if you don’t know your status yet. Remember, hepatitis is not included in the health examination for most visa applicants before coming to Australia, only a small group are required to have hepatitis tests including pregnant women, and people who want to work or study in a medical field to be a doctor, nurse, dentist, or paramedic. Testing is easy and can be done by any GP – you can ask your doctor for a specific hepatitis B or C blood test. If the test is positive, regular check-ups for chronic hepatitis B and treatment for hepatitis C and hepatitis B (if
needed) can reduce the risk of developing liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, and help prevent hepatitis related death. Hepatitis B and C are mainly transmitted through blood, and not transmitted through sharing food, drinks, plates, cups, shaking hands, kissing, touching etc. Social contacts do not transmit hepatitis B and C. We should treat all people living with hepatitis B and C equally. For this year’s World Hepatitis Day help to promote the following messages: • People living with or who have never been tested (unaware of an infection) for hepatitis B and C- can’t wait • Lifesaving treatment (when recommended) for people with hepatitis B and C – can’t wait.
• Screening for hepatitis B and C (sometimes treatment – hepatitis B) for pregnant women – can’t wait. • Birth dose vaccination for hepatitis B for all babies – can’t wait (especially if the mother has hepatitis B) • Ending stigma and discrimination of people infected with hepatitis B or C – can’t wait. • (https://www. worldhepatitisday. org/#2021--theme:-hepatitiscan't-wait) ECCQ has produced a short hepatitis information video in 13 languages and a number of translated resources which you can find at www.eccq.com.au/bbv. Eat Less Sodium Ingesting too much sodium is a common cause of water retention, even if you don’t have a pre-existing condition that would make you prone to it. Because of the imbalance of salt and water, water gets drawn out of your cells and puffs up your tissues. The resulting bloating can affect even your eyes, filling out the tissues around the eye cavity, and causing puffy eyes. Less salt = less puffiness Water The easiest way to get rid of puffy eyes is to drink water. When the body is well hydrated, there is less chance of water retention that can cause your under-eye area and other parts of your body to swell. Water also helps flush toxins out of the body. To stay well hydrated, drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water each day. In addition to this, you must reduce the amount of salt you eat to reduce water retention in the body. Also, avoid caffeinated and carbonated beverages that can be dehydrating.

Rizwan, Hasan Ali promoted to Category A in Pakistan’s central contract list Mohammad Rizwan and Hasan Ali are among twelve players who have earned promotions in the 20-player contract list released by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Hasan Ali, who was not contracted last year due to injury, has gained a place in the highest-earning Category A contract list after exceptional performance since the start of the year. Since his comeback into the side in 2021, Hasan Ali has picked up 40 wickets in 11 matches so far across formats which include 4 fivefors and a ten-wicket haul. He remains Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in international cricket in 2021. Fawad Alam and Fakhar Zaman both received promotions to Category B while Azhar Ali moved down from the previous year’s Category A spot to B. Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Hasnain, and Nauman Ali are the new faces to be handed a contract in 2021-22. However, Shan Masood, Haris Sohail, Usman Shinwari, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Abbas, Naseem Shah, Shan Masood, and Usman Shinwari have not
been retained this time. The 12-month contracts will run from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022 with the list trimmed down from 21 to 20 which includes the three players - Imran Butt, Shahnawaz Dahani, and Usman Qadir - in the Emerging Category. PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said that the door remains firmly open for players who missed out while they stay committed to improving the value of contracts year on year. “Selecting 20 players amongst a big pool of quality cricketers is always a challenging task. I would like to thank the panel for their diligent work in selecting the 2021-22 central contract list against agreed criteria,” said Wasim Khan. “In the new list, we have seen eight new players
emerge who have now gained central contracts. Due to the competitive nature of the central contract system, nine players who had contracts in 2020-21 have sadly missed out on this occasion. The door remains firmly open for these players and they will continue to remain in the plans of the selectors. “Emerging Category recognises and rewards the up and coming talent. We have seen the emergence of Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain move from an Emerging Category to Category C, and the likes of Imran Butt, Shahnawaz Dahani and Usman Qadir breaking into the Emerging Category. The Emerging Category remains a platform for young players to break into the central contract system,” added Wasim. “The equalisation of
match fees means that all players who walk out together to represent Pakistan will receive the same match fees irrespective of which category they are in, or whether they have a central contract or not. “Despite the challenging economic climate, we as the Pakistan Cricket Board believe that it is important to continue to show advancement in the value of central contracts. In the last two years, we have seen significant progress in central contract payments and we will remain committed to the principle of improving the value of contracts year-onyear.” Contract List: Category A – Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi Category B – Azhar Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Fawad Alam, Shadab Khan and Yasir Shah Category C – Abid Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Nauman Ali and Sarfaraz Ahmed Emerging Category – Imran Butt, Shahnawaz Dahani and Usman Qadir.

Australia's contingent has landed in Saint Lucia, with a five-match T20I series on the itinerary before three ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs in Barbados. Aaron Finch leads a new-look squad on the tour, though declares that even with changes to his side and plans to experiment, winning as many matches as possible will be the best thing to carry momentum through to the T20 World Cup in October. “We’re obviously wanting to win every game that we play, every series that we play, so that’s first and foremost our absolute priority," Finch told the press upon arrival in Saint Lucia. “If there’s a chance to gather some information along the way, and maybe guys getting more of an opportunity, then we’ll take it as it comes.” Australia are yet to taste Men's T20 World Cup victory, with their runner-up finish at 2010's tournament the closest the side have come to filling the void in the trophy cabinet. Finch's Australian team in the format has usually comprised of six specialist batters and five bowlers, though the skipper admits the nature of the Saint Lucia surface and the absence of allrounder Glenn Maxwell force him to experiment with his tactics. “That was a model that had worked very well for us (in Australia). It worked well for us in South Africa as well, having six batters and five specialist bowlers and not deviating. I think the only time is when Maxy’s chipped in with a couple of overs when the conditions and the matchups have suited.” “I think in conditions like this (in Saint Lucia) where we expect the wickets to be a bit slower,
and again playing five games at the same venue, we expect that they’ll start turning a little bit more. We’ve seen that already in the South Africa/West Indies series.” Twenty players have made the trip for the tour, as the side attempt to build depth and improve its overall flexibility. Finch believes the preparation both in the Caribbean and on their Bangladesh tour in August will be crucial for their major tournament aspirations. “It’s a chance to tinker with that and give ourselves some more options up our sleeve when we’re planning the T20 World Cup squad and looking forward a little bit to that, just trying to get more information and not being hamstrung I guess by just playing one style of cricket the whole time.” On the World Cup moving to UAE and Oman, Finch believes most of their original strategy of playing in India should translate well in the new conditions. “Having played there (UAE) quite a bit over the last four or five years I think that we’ll be okay in terms of how our plan has gone, compared to if it was in India. “We expect the wickets to be pretty similar: little bit of turn, and probably turning more and slowing up as the tournament goes on.” After the World Cup, Australia are set to host a home Test match against Afghanistan and an Ashes series against England, though Finch reiterated that Australia intends to play their strongest sides despite the packed schedule. “It (the T20 World Cup) is the one bit of silverware that’s eluded us in our time and anyone who is available and is selected, there’ll be no management for Test cricket.”

This year Navagraha Pooja and Navagraha Maha Yagana were celebrated at Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir on Sunday the 20th of June. About 200 devotees took part in this event and it turned out to be a highly successful Yagna and everyone present were blessed. Every year at Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir, our Dharam Guru Param Pujya Pt Tripathi Ji, performs a Navgrah Maha Yagana for the shanti of Navgraha. This Yagana takes approximately two hours. The Yagana gets performed for all the 9 Garaha (Planets) so no matter which Graha is troubling anyone, their troubles will be over once they take part in this early Nav Graha Pooja. For those who are trouble free now, the Pooja will make sure that they stay trouble free from any Graha. This Yagana forms a Nav Graha Kawach (shield) for everyone who takes part in it Should one take part in this pooja ones every year, they will stay trouble free from any Graha and they will not have to do any other pooja for any Grah Shanti. This is not all, the temple also serves every one with a very special Nav Graha Maha Prasad. Besides other things, the Maha Prasad will also include all the grains that is required to perform a Navgrah pooja. Those who missed out this year please do not worry and keep a watch for the date next year. God Bless You All Shree Vishnu Maya Mandir

The Snow Line, by Tessa McWatt. Scribe Publications Life is a journey and “The Snow Line” written by Tessa Mc Watt, reminds us of this. Elderly Jackson, a retired engineer and widower from Boston, Monica from Toronto, Reema from London, Yosh from Vancouver a Yoga teacher from an Indian untouchable family, are guests for a Himalayan wedding. India is unknown to some, has bitter memories for others, but now a challenge for them all. Between Jackson, whose last task in life is to scatter his wife’s ashes on the Himalayan snow line, and Reema, there is an unknown bond which is the key to his past. I bond with the story as places I have visited are mentioned: the Golden Temple at Amritsar, then after an eight-hour taxi ride arriving at Gangotri the source of the Ganges River, or the cloud and snowcovered foothills of the Himalayas, where I lived. All such wonderful memories while Indian weddings were a feast of colour, tradition and entertainment. We learn that Jackson “while old is still has passion to do something outrageous;” that “old people make Monica tense,” Rheema” has an ache everywhere in her body and doesn’t want to be like her mum” and Yosh is a “calming presence when tragedy effects the travellers.” The journeying group have painful things in common: they carry with them the ghosts of their past and doubts for the future. Jackson also carries with him the ashes of his dead, but ever-present wife Amelia, whom he first kissed on Christmas Eve in Brunei. The book challenged me: if I, like the elderly Jackson, had one last vital life task to complete, would I and could I do it, no matter what the cost, to reach that ‘snow line’? “The snow has settled and bird upon birds...Please teach me to dance.” By Peter Lane Rai
