 07 3268 6188 SYDNEY, Sept 6 (Reuters)Sydney, the epicentre of Australia's biggest coronavirus outbreak, is expected to see daily infections peak next week, authorities said on Monday, as they look to speed up immunisations before easing lockdown rules. Australia is trying to contain a third wave of infections that has hit its two largest cities, Sydney and

Melbourne, and its capital Canberra, forcing more than half the country's 25 million peopleinto strict stay-athome restrictions. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the government's modelling revealed the state would require its highest number of intensive care beds in early October, with "additional pressure on the system" in the next few weeks.

Daily cases in Sydney's worst-affected suburbs are expected to rise to as high as 2,000 until the middle of this month, the modelling showed. "If too many of us do the wrong thing, (if) there are too many super-spreading events, we could see those numbers higher," Berejiklian said during a media briefing in Sydney, the state capital. From the Publisher Welcome to our September, a significant month of festivals, functions and events that is if the restriction remain the same or ease a little bit more. Many of the functions that had been postponed are being reconvened, festivals on the other hand have to be observed regardless of the restrictions, the scale of the celebration would differ dependent on the restrictions at the time of the festival. So, in September the major Hindu festivals would be Teej on September 9th, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 10th, Hindi Diwas on 14th September, Ganesh Visarjan on September 20 and Pitrupaksha will begin on September 21, these just few of the popular ones obviously there are many more. Leading into October we will have Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October.

Brisbane itself will be abuzz with activities during September with Brisbane Festival, and River fire as the many ones, Sunsuper Riverfire returns this September to ignite our skyline and wrap up three incredible weeks of Brisbane Festival for yet another year. Tribal Experiences Managing Director

and Yuggera and Turrbal man Shannon Ruska will open this spectacular event with a powerful smoking ceremony. Brisbane Festival will run from 3ed September till 25th September, we really are fortunate to be here in Brisbane, Queensland, our hard-line boarder policy has enabled us to enjoy some of our iconic events, unfortunately EKKA had to be cancelled and Ekka day holiday shifted to Friday 29th October, this will give us a long weekend. India Day Fair which is always very close to EKKA day had to be postponed to 23rd October, the venue remains the same, Southbank Piazza. While the public celebration has been shifted, 15th of August was celebrated in a big way at Queensland Parliament house, the Gala Dinner was organised rather quickly but was a soldout success. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Music Junction segment for this month as it clashed with too many events, we will be back with another wonderful presentation in October. We have collaborated with PIO TV for daily India

Report in our Facebook live segment, PIO TV is run by Gupta family of Delhi , the Guptas have been a very well known to us, and we have done a lot of function together in Delhi and abroad, KN Gupta is a senior journalist, and Munish Gupta has always worked MIOA and MEA and has been very active with GOPIO International, NRIPIO chamber of commerce m just name a few. This month “Aap ki Sehat” featured Dr Abha Chikarsal who shed light on Women’s health, all episodes can be viewed on our Facebook and YouTube channels. Congratulations is in order for Usha Chandra for her strong leadership and community engagement, on 4th September she had two significant speaking engagements. First she was a speaker and panellist at the preserving mother language and culture forum in Acacia Ridge and the second was a keynote speech at Nriytha Bharati School of Kathak during their annual dance concert call “ Arpan”, she spoke with confidence and both the speeches and presentations were highly appreciated and applauded. Being a businesswoman, balancing family live, professional and business live and to top it all off the community work is not easy, but she does this all and has been doing it for such a long time. Often, we see many women in business forums and awards featuring many newcomers, which is good, but pioneers and trail blazers should not be forgotten, so well-done Usha. For the last two issues we have maintained fifty-two pages but we are busting on the edges as they say, so moving forward we may go to fifty six or maybe even sixty pages, sixty pages is were I would like to be, but it is all dependant on one, the advertisers and secondly the editorials, the later is not that much of a challenge, and to this end I would like to place on record my sincere appreciation to all the advertisers who have put the trust in us and all the correspondent who tirelessly forward their submission every month. Regulars editorials and submission have always been welcomed, community news rather than self-promotion is encouraged, with all due credit. Lastly, I would like to mention the vaccination, can I encourage everyone to please get vaccinated, I have had the two doses of AZ , and I cant say that I did not feel any effect, the day after I was bit light headed but, being busy I did not have time to focus on the minor inconvenience. In the community interest, please get vaccinated and observe all the health directives, we will have to learn to live with this, so everyone has to do their bit. Until next Month, take care and happy reading. —Umesh Chandra OAM

Canberra’s only distinctive Corin snow experience

By Rama Gaind For many who don’t often see snow - a visit to a winter wonderland is pure enchantment – especially for young children. The closest place to see snow near the nation’s capital Canberra - is Corin Forest Mountain Resort, located near Tidbinbilla. Then, of course, there are the Snowy Mountains, Kosciuszko National Park, which is approximately twoand-a-half-hour’s drive from the nation’s capital. In winter, Corin Forest provides Canberra's only snow experience. Often overlooked, Corin is a 45-minute drive located in the Tidbinbilla Mountain Ranges. Surrounded by tall forests in a secluded mountain valley, it offers a fine, year-round alpine adventure. Corin Forest has the distinction of being a ski resort where it rarely snows. They rely on snow guns for most of the winter to get snow cover! There are usually about six natural snowfalls every winter with an average of five-to-10cm per fall. It’s snow time now, and not surprisingly, we often forget how close we are to Corin Forest … only 25 kilometres from the southern suburbs of Canberra. Luckily it’s a very cold place with temperatures as low as -10 and this

Corin Forest, just 45 minutes from the heart of Canberra, relies on snow guns for most of the winter to get snow cover! means, snow can be made throughout the winter. Once the temperature falls below -2 Celsius, then the snow guns are turned on. Through the wonders of modern technology snow is brought to Canberra’s backyard! The goal at Corin is to provide an affordable and fun (sometimes first) snow experience. From throwing a snowball to learning how to ski, every effort is made to make one’s snow experience a memorable one. As Aristotle said: “To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake it is necessary to stand out in the cold”. When it snows, you have two choices: shovel or make snow angels. Whatever you do, rug up and get set for beginner skiing or boarding, with lessons available from trained instructors. There is a snow play area where you can toboggan or just play in the snow, make snowmen or have snowball fights. Afterwards, warm up with a hot chocolate by the roaring open fire in the Corin Lodge.

Many activities Corin Forest, on Corin Dam Road, has a variety of activities to keep the family entertained all year: • Corin Forest is 50 kilometres from Canberra CBD • Small alpine resort at 1,200 metres altitude • Snowboarding, skiing, tobogganing and snow play sessions • Beginner lessons available • Night skiing/ snowboarding • Open daily during snow season • No gate/National Park entry fees • Café open daily during snow season • Camping available nearby • 1.2 kilometre-long alpine slide bobsled open during non-winter seasons Corin Forest is accessible by car via Point Hut Crossing or the Cotter. It does not have accommodation and a village like most resorts, but it attracts visitors year-round

During winter Corin Forest provides Canberra’s only snow experience.

Corin Forest is a small alpine resort at 1,200 metres altitude and only 25kms from the southern suburbs of Canberra. for a range of high country activities and experiences on Canberra’s doorstep. Happy recollections also come to mind of adventurous summertime rendezvous taking in the spectacular views of the nation's capital, with

Namadgi National Park and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve right next door. Ride on the exhilarating alpine slide that descends 1.2km through the forest. Nearby Square Rock, Gibraltar Falls and Tidbinbilla also made for a great day trips, with

barbecues and picnic tables available. John Steinbeck, the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, was right when he said: "What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness".

WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW

Pastor Suresh Dass Joseph josephdass@optusnet.com.au Dear reader, it is with much joy we bring to you the word of God. In life, we all face situations wondering how they are going to work out. When we look at the facts, the figures, the reports, the odds are against us. We do our best to come up with ways, ideas, and plans to find some solution, and we think we have to come

up with an answer, or it’s not going to happen. But we have to understand that we are to be comfortable not knowing everything. There are some things that only God knows or He may reveal to somebody else. I want to encourage you that you can be at peace not knowing everything. In the scriptures (Exodus 33 v 12-16), when God told Moses to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt into their promised land, Israel, Moses admitted that he did not know the whole plan of God and asked for the Lord to be present with him during this journey. The people may have asked Moses what land they were going to, the people who lived there, their provision,

4 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, September, 2021

food, and water for the journey ahead. Moses' reply could have been, “I don’t know everything; I was just told to lead you towards the promised land.” During His earthly ministry, Jesus told His listeners not to know or worry about their food, water, and clothes. But to seek the kingdom of God, first and all their needs shall be added by God. The word kingdom means the king and his domain, his rule and authority. The king has a throne to sit on and rule over his people. In life, we will all have thrones, and what we put on the throne will determine the kind of life we will live. Here are 3 things we can learn from Moses. 1- You don’t need to know everything. You

need to know where to find it when you need it. Often, we get worried about the problems we face, how we will fund our retirement, what if our health does not improve. Will this relationship improve. What we are doing is putting all our problems on the throne. Like Moses, you have to be okay with people not knowing your side of the story. You have nothing to prove to anybody. 2- You don’t have to know everything. God may have revealed it to someone else. God told Moses to take his brother Aaron with him. Aaron could do things that Moses could not. The danger is when you put yourself on the throne and try to control everything around you and figure out and

manipulate things. All these will only lead to frustration and stress. You will worry and lose sleep. Like Moses, when you realise that it’s okay not to know everything, then you will come to the place of peace and joy that you didn’t know where it comes from. The scripture says, “Let the peace of God rule over your hearts.” 3- You don’t have to see everything. God told Moses to lead the people into their land of promise. By asking for God’s presence, Moses put God, who sees everything, back on the throne. Like Moses, when we move our problems and ourselves off from the throne and put God on the throne, then you are saying, “God, I don’t know how this is going to work

out, but I am not going to worry, I am not going to keep trying to figure it out. God, I trust you; your plans for me are good.” When we face difficulties, we are under pressure to know everything, trying to figure out the escape, so we live stressed and uptight. But when you understand that you don’t have to have the answer, that it’s not your job to figure it out, it takes the pressure off you when you are comfortable. When someone says, “I have heard about your problem, what are you going to do?” Your answer should be, “I don’t know, but I know Who does, God is on the throne, and I am at peace about it.” God bless you. Ps Joseph Suresh Dass

Abuse and Anger - Sadhguru, Isha Foundation Q: How do people deal with abuse in their past without becoming angry? Sadhguru: For many people nowadays, whatever has happened in the past has become an excuse for what they are right now: “I am like this because somebody abused me.” I am not saying this without any concern or lack of compassion for such things, but this problem has taken on major proportions. If they do something nasty and somebody asks them, “Why did you do such a thing?” people say, “When I was a child, you know what my father did to me?” I am not trying to belittle somebody's unpleasant experiences. I know there is pain behind it, but do we want to continue to harvest pain or do we want to convert this pain into wisdom and harvest wisdom out of our experience of life? That is a choice every human being has. That is the choice society itself has. That is a choice we must exercise. Especially if you have been abused, if you have been put through unpleasant situations in your life, you should be sensible enough not to put anybody else in those situations. Isn’t that an intelligent way to be? But many people just use the unpleasant experiences

in their past as something to hide behind. Whatever you consider as misfortunes are events in your life. When life happens in a way that you do not want it to happen, that is what you consider a misfortune. It is every human being's aspiration that life should happen the way we plan it. But no

6 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, September, 2021

matter how capable we are, outside situations will never happen one hundred percent the way we want them. However unpleasant the events may be, as human beings we have the intelligence to think beyond that. If something unpleasant happens to us, what should be our

first thought? “This should never again happen to me or to anyone.” This is very human. But now, because something unpleasant happened to you, if you do that to everybody and say, “I am doing this because they did it to me” – this definitely needs to be looked at. And this is not an individual position. The larger society

has taken this position. They think it is alright. It is not alright. It needs a social psycho-therapy. Especially if you have been abused and you know the pain of being abused, you should ensure it never happens to anybody. Ranked amongst the fifty most influential people in India, Sadhguru

Especially if you have been abused, if you have been put through unpleasant situations in your life, you should be sensible enough not to put anybody else in those situations. Isn’t that an intelligent way to be? But many people just use the unpleasant experiences in their past as something to hide behind. is a yogi, mystic, visionary and bestselling author. Sadhguru has been conferred the "Padma Vibhushan", India’s highest annual civilian award, by the Government of India in 2017, for exceptional and distinguished service.

GOPIO Queensland celebrates

Indian Independence Day in Queensland Parliament House

BRISBANE, History was made on 15th August when GOPIO Queensland hosted their first ever Indian Independence Day Gala dinner in Queensland Parliament house. The event was fully sold out with in twenty-two hours being announced. The committee had to make a snap decision after the snap lock in Queensland finished and restrictions eased. As India Day Fair had been postponed, GOPIO Queensland still wanted to observe and celebrate India’s Independence in some way, it was decided to hold the gala dinner in Queensland parliament house and with the support of Joe Kelly MP , the venue was booked and the grand dinner organised. Three courses sit down table service royal banquet greeted the guests, as stand up networking drinks were not allowed, Red and White wine included with the dinner was already on the table. The event began with acknowledgment to country, followed by national Anthems which always brings out sentiments and patriotism in people, this night was no different. After the national Anthem president Rakesh Sharma welcomed everyone and delivered a powerful speech. Point to note is that as the event was being held indoors and after sunset the flag raising as per protocol; did not take place. The MC’s went through the long list of VIPS present, Prime Ministers recorded message arranged by Senator Paul Scarr was played on the big screen, Umesh Chandra OAM read out Minister Alan Tudge’s message for the occasion. Mrs Archana Singh the

honorary counsel for India in Queensland was up next and delivered a wonderful speech befitting the occasion, she made everyone feel proud to be of Indian descent. Joe Kelly MP state member for Greenslopes showed his appreciation for Indian community and mentioned his long-standing relation with us. The sacrifices of the Indian Army in gaining independence and subsequently guarding our borders should never be in vain and as such we had Retired Indian Army Captain Geeta Singh speaking on the occasion, her befitting speech was well received. Adding to Captain Geeta’s lived experience Usha Chivukula’s powerful rendition of “Aye Mere Waton Ke logon” really hit home the emotion were overflowing. Councillor Vicki Howard represented Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, following whom was Kavita Khullar with her patriotic poetry which she delivered with high energy and passion. During main course Yousuf Alikhan and Usha

8 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, September, 2021

Chivukula did a medley of songs on backing tracks. GOPIO International Life member Pars Ram Punj also addressed the gathering, he touched on GOPIO’s role on an international scale, and the importance of individual chapters as ambassadors in their respective countries. Usha Chandra delivered one of the best vote of thanks ever, she is always been in charge of sponsorship and is the undisputed champion in that field. Mrs Soma Nair of Meri Hindi did justice to her speech and brought out the emotions once again. Over all very high class and highly successful event delivered in a grand style decorations by Dreamstyle decoration and the carefully chosen three course menu served by the wonderful parliament house staff made the night a memorable one , the feed back has been amazing, normally on high class function e get complaint about the food especially vegetarians who often get the raw deal , well guess what, we reversed that scenario at this function and the vegetarians were full of praise for the food, I rest my case.

FATHERS DAY SPECIAL - SOME FATHER-SON RELATIONS DURING TIMES OF KRISHN As Janam Astmi and Father’s Day tend to fall almost around same time in Southern hemisphere, a comparison of some father-son relations of Dwapar Yug (during times of Krishn) would be relevant, as they are very rarely told. These are only summaries which are not exhaustive-there are others. I feel this discussion will generate some interest in such relationships and how lucky or unlucky they were with their sons. off all the negative tales of "sautelapan (of adopted children). A very exemplary relationship where the son shone as a pride for both pairs of His parents.

Subhadra fell asleep while listening to Krishn's story, and so the unborn child was able to hear only part of the secret. Hence he could not break out of it alive, and hence sacrificed his life for honour of his father and clan. Any father would be proud of a son like Abhimanyu.

Please read on... As Janam Astmi and Father’s Day tend to fall almost around same time in Southern hemisphere, a comparison of some fatherson relations of Dwapar Yug (during times of Krishn) would be relevant, as they are very rarely told. These are summaries of some father-son relations, which are not exhaustivethere are others. Hope our Parcharaks/ Pundits could add on to them and make their parvachan a bit more interesting which relate to, and be relevant to our present day, rather than in abstract (out of touch, intellectual) stories. 1) KRISHN- VASUDEV/ NAND: we always talk about two mothers of Krishn, but fail to mention His TWO FATHERS. Vasudev who faced all sorts of troubles and dangers to take his son away from life-threatening situation (in Mathura) to safety and care of Nand (in Gokul) who looked after that son who was not his, like his own. This story balances

Arjun, Krishn and Abhimanyu. Arjun can be proud of his son Abhimanyu, who went into battle into Chakravihu, knowing he would not be able to come out. But Pandav’s honour was at stake. Even his Mama, Krishn could not save him as he wanted the wheels of fate to move without his interference. 2) ARJUN -ABHIMANYU: Abhimanyu was a son who raised the profile of his warrior father by sacrificing his life, knowing that he would not be able to complete the "Chakravyuh" - he could only enter it but could not come out of it alive. This episode also substantiates the medical science that children are affected by their environment when in the mother's womb. Abhimanyu was still in his mother's womb when he first heard his uncle Krishn telling Subhadra (Krishn’s sister) about the secret of the almost impenetrable military formation known as the Chakravyuh. But then

Blind father Dhritrastr and Evil son Diryodhan – Selfish greed of a father for success of his son was the reason why the whole lineage of Kauravs was wiped out because Diryodhan was not stopped when he went overboard committing evils against Pandavs. He paid heavily for this, with whole of Kaurav lineage, kul. 3) DHRITRASTRADURYODHAN: This was the most unholy relation between a father and a son. It is a lesson to all fathers that they should not spoil their sons and submit to all their demands in selfishness for glory of their sons, and accept their unrighteous (sinful, wrong) acts silently. That resulted in complete annihilation (destruction) of Kauravs and vansh (lineage) of the blind father, who was literally as well as spiritually blind.

While this aptly applies to a father-son relation in Fiji politics, I will refrain to name them. At times the downfall of a father is the "ucchi kanchaaye" or selfish greed for success of the son, who, like Duryodhan, turns out to be an evil devil. A father who blindly overlooks the bad deeds of his son would end up like complete destruction of Kaurav lineage. Love for a son should never blind the father of the choice between the right and the wrong. Dritrastra was such a blind father, in all respects of blindness Pray you do not have a son like Duryodhan (or even a ‘blind’ father.)

Bhim, ogre wife Hidimbi and their son, Ghatotkatch, who was the reason to save Arjun’s life. This is because the deadly weapon that Karn had reserved for Arjun had to be used against Ghatotkatch, as he cause havoc on 14th day of the Mahabharat Battle. 4) BHIM-GHATOTKATCH - Very rarely mentioned in our parvachan, but a son of Bhim, born through an ogre (rachasi) woman from lineage of Hidimba. This son was the salvation of Pandavas in Mahabharat and was instrumental in victory of Pandavs. Karan was forced to

use the deadly and sure-shot weapon reserved for death of Arjun on Ghatotkach. Even born in a rachas kul or of low-maternal association, we pray that we have a son like him who stand for his father and his lineage and heritage. Ghatotkach was an exemplary son. 5) UGRASEN-KANS: The less said, the better. Ugrasen was Nana (maternal grandfather) of Krishn, and was imprisoned by his own son, Kans. But we still have present-day sons like Kans who usurps the property of their parents and disown and discard them. Pray nobody has a son like him who was also very unkind and brutal to his sister Devaki and brother – in-law (Bahnoi) Vasudev. Contrary to belief of some that Kans was equivalent to Ravan of Treta Yuga, this was not so. Equivalent of Ravan and Kumbhkaran in Dwapar Yug were Shishupal and Dantavakr, who both were killed by Krishn. Pray none of you get a son, brother or thankfully a Mama like Kans. 6) SANTANU-BHISHAM PITAMAH: Thankful are fathers who have a son like Bhisham, who sacrifices his 'Jawani" and whole life, and vows not to marry for the happiness of his father. How many sons we have now, who will agree to their father remarrying, for the happiness of his father, after death of their mother? I have seen sons who object to happiness of their widower

Key Scripture: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIV) Dear Reader, Currently we live in a world that is troubled and traumatised by the pandemic. But we need know the truth about finding real peace in this world. Vaccination may be a temporary victory over our current pandemic. We need stronger anchor of hope in these turbulent times. We need the peace that gives us sure hope and comfort. Do you know where to find the such peace? Many people are grieving for the loss of our family members and friends. And we need to be comforted

by The Truth. Yes, God of all comfort alone has the power and grace to bring us into place of hope and deep comfort. You need find real answers to following questions: What is the truth? What is true peace? Whom can we trust in these troubled times? These are simple but very important questions. We hope you will find the right answer through this message of hope. Who knows this is written just for you in such a troubled time.

7) GURU DRON ASHWATHAMA: While considered an avatar of Lord Shiv and being son of such a sage, the fact that Ashwathama sided with unrighteous (sinful) Kauravas, he lost all praises, especially when he vents on killing the Pandavs. Hence, it teaches us "sangat seh gunn aaye, sangatt se gunn jaaye (the company of a child determines his character). Even born of good and righteous parents, a child in wrong company will be like this son of Guru Dron. Hence all fathers need to be wary of this. To remain a pride to them, parents need to ensure their sons are in the right company. I hope these synopsis and thoughts on father-son relationships will generate interest to delve deeper into these subjects. Hope you all had a Happy and Fruitful Lockdown Janam Astmi. FIJI PUNDIT wishes you all a very Happy Father’s Day coming shortly in the Southern Hemisphere on first Sunday in September. Peace in the Pandemic…? Jesus said “Arise and Shine…”

fathers having a companion after death of their mother. Great are those who can be as understanding and act like Bhisham for happiness of their fathers. Pray that we have sons like Bhisham Pitamah.

This world and people can also give you some kind of a shallow peace. Some people find peace in drinking alcohol and other drinks. Some find peace in hard work and money. But this kind of peace fly away very soon. You are left empty and disturbed.

What is the truth? Centuries ago a Roman ruler asked the same question to Jesus.

Peace that your Creator offers you is a binding peace. It changes the way you look at your troubles and will not be afraid of them. True Peace is a person. And created us to enjoy His peace in this planet earth.

Throughout human history many philosophers have tried to explain about truth. And they have created many forms and concepts about the truth. But, truth is not a concept or collection facts and ideas or good philosophy. Because these human ideas can never satisfy our quest real and ultimate truth. What scripture says about truth? Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come (John 8:32). Therefore you can see that, “Truth” is a Person. And truth is not a collection of good moral

ideas. And that Person Jesus Christ invites you to a perfect relation-ship. Knowing the Truth leads to way to a purpose filled life. Jesus sums up his invitation by this promise of peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27 NIV) Notice that Peace is given by the Person who alone has absolute power over troubles of this world. Jesus has overcome the forces of evil and darkness of

this world. Knowing Jesus as your Creator and Saviour opens up a way to the true knowledge. This knowledge leads us to an intimate invitation. And when accept His invitation and open your heart to your Creator, you make peace with God. This peace is the results in a true and everlasting relationship. This relationship with our Living and Loving God produces true peace. It is God kind of peace. This peace is free of fear and worries. This Peace leads you to place of safety and security during this difficult times.

If you need a miracle of true peace today, why not say YES to the Miracle Maker Jesus Christ. Say this prayer with sincere hearts; “Father God, I need your help, forgive my sins, heal my troubled heart and body. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again to give me a life of peace and joy. Bless me with your Holy Spirit and unlimited grace and mercy. Help me to grow in the knowledge of your unending love. Thank you God answering this prayer in Jesus name. Amen.” Friends if you have said this prayer for the first time, write to us, so we can guide you to grow in your purpose driven life. Our email is: navig8grace@ gmail.com

Bhishma – The Son of Ganga King Shantanu of Kuru dynasty was on a hunting expedition in the forest along the River Ganga. On the way he noticed a woman coming from the direction of the river. She was of a flawless beauty resembling an Apsara or nymph. The king was mesmerised by her charm. The lady also saw the king and was attracted to him. As she came closer, the king introduced himself and praised her celestial beauty and elegance. She was pleased with his compliments and listened to his speech eagerly. Encouraged by her receptive manners, the king asked her to become his wife. The lady thought for a moment and then spoke to him. She consented to become his queen provided the king met certain conditions during their life together. The condition stipulated that the king would not stop or scold her for her actions, whether for good or ill. She would remain with him as long as he followed these terms. If she was stopped or scolded, she would leave him immediately. Shantanu assented. The king brought her to his capital Hastinapur, the city of elephants, and there they solemnised their marriage. Shantanu fathered eight sons with his wife. As each of the first seven children was born, she cast them into the stream. The king mourned but said nothing for fear of loosing her altogether. When the eighth child was born, she seemed full of mirth and departed to drown the newborn baby. The grieving king lost patience. He followed and said to her, “Do not kill him! Who are you? Why do you harm your sons? Stay, wicked child killer; do not incur this dreadful sin!” She responded stating that she would not kill their last son, but she could not live with him any longer, in accordance with the terms of the agreement they made before their union. She further indicated that she was the celestial river Ganga in human form. Their eight sons were the Vasus, deities of wealth. Sage Vasishtha had cursed them for their transgression to be born in human form. Vasus had approached her for redemption. She had promised to give them birth as human and free them from the curse as soon as they were born, except for the eighth Vasu. Her eighth son would have a long life. Promising to return their eighth son to the king later, Ganga disappeared taking the child with her. She named her son Devavrat and took him to different realms. Devavrat was brought up and trained by eminent sages and scholars. Brihaspati the teacher of deities and Sukracharya the teacher of

demons taught him political science and other branches of knowledge. Parashuram trained him in warfare. Indra bestowed celestial weapons on him. Sages Vasishtha, Chyavan, Sanatkumar and Markandey also taught him spiritual disciplines. Years later, Shantanu was roaming on the banks of the Ganga reminiscing his past. He observed the flow of the river had become shallow. Walking upstream he noticed a youth who was blocking the water flow with a dam made up of arrows. When the king tried to speak to him, he vanished from the scene. Shantanu intuited that his surviving son would have looked like him by now. He addressed Ganga and asked for his son. Ganga appeared before him with their son Devavrat and presented him to the king. Shantanu returned home with his son and installed him as prince. Devavrat delighted the subjects with his valour and conduct and helped his father in royal responsibilities. One day Shantanu visited a forest near river Yamuna. He smelt a wonderful fragrance. He searched for its source and traced it to a lovely girl. On enquiry, she told him that she was the daughter of a fisherman and her name was Satyavati. She ferried people across the river as instructed by her father. The king was so impressed by her fragrance and beauty that he wanted to marry her. He went to her father to ask for her hand. The fisherman consented on a condition that her son should be consecrated as king after him. The king could not accept this condition. Devavrat was already appointed the prince and was on track to be the next king. The king returned home disappointed and felt disheartened. Devavrat noticed his condition and learned from a reliable elder the reason for his father’s state of mind. He went to the fisherman and asked for his daughter as wife for his father. The fisherman repeated his condition. Devavrat declared that he renounced his claim to the kingship to satisfy the condition. To allay any chance of claim to the throne from his children, he further vowed to remain celibate, and never marry throughout his life. Hearing his vows, celestial deities and sages showered flowers on him from the sky and said, “He is Bhishma” referring to his terrible vow. He became known as Bhishma. Bhishma brought Satyavati to Hastinapur and presented her to his father. When Shantanu learnt about his vow, he felt obliged and offered him a boon that would allow him to die at time of his

choosing. To dispel any danger to the kingdom in the future, Bhishma vowed to protect the kingdom and remain loyal to the throne of Hastinapur. Shantanu wedded Satyavati. The couple had two sons named Chitrangad and Vichitravirya. After Shantanu’s death Bhishma installed Chitrangad as king. Chitrangad died in a battle with a Gandharva. Bhishma then installed Vichitravirya who was still a child, and acted under Bhishma’s instructions. When Vichitravirya attained a marriageable age, Bhishma attended the Swayamvar that the king of Kashi had arranged for his three daughters, named Amba, Ambika and Ambalika. He announced his presence, as he was not invited, and abducted all the three girls for his half-brother Vichitravirya. He overcame resistance from king Salva and other potential suitors, and brought the girls home. Ambika and Ambalika wedded Vichitravirya but Amba refused stating that she loved Salva and had chosen him as her husband. She was allowed to return to her lover but Salva refused to accept her. She returned to Bhishma and asked him to marry her. Bhishma could not marry due to his vow. Amba held Bhishma responsible for her predicament, and planned her revenge. She approached Parashuram for help, who unsuccessfully advised Bhishma to accept Amba as his wife. Then they fought for many days, and finally Bhishma defeated Parashuram. Later Amba prayed to Shiva, who granted her a boon to be able to be an accomplice in Bhishma’s death. Vichitravirya died of consumption without producing an heir. On Bhishma’s suggestion, Satyavati summoned her son Vyas Dvaipayan. Sage Parasar had begotten Vyas

on Satyavati before her marriage to Shantanu. Through the system of Niyoga with Vyas, Ambika gave birth to Dhritrastra and Ambalika to Pandu. Bhishma managed the kingdom until they grew to adulthood. Pandu was installed as king since the elder brother Dhritrastra was blind from birth. Bhishma arranged their marriage. Dhritrastra married Gandhari and Pandu married Kunti and Madri. Hundred sons were born to Gandhari. They were called Kauravas. Duryodhan the eldest was their leader. Pandu had five sons, called Pandavas. Yudhisthir was the eldest who later became king. Pandu died due to a curse when his sons were still children. In his absence, Dhritrastra was invested with the throne under protection of Bhishma. Bhishma engaged Guru Dronacharya as a teacher to educate all the princes. From early childhood Duryodhan displayed animosity towards Pandavas. His attitude was dangerous for harmony in the family. Bhishma often counselled Duryodhan but he would not listen to him. King Dhritrastra was unable to take any action against his son. Bhishma also despised Karna whom he believed to be one of the main advisors of Duryodhan. Bhishma became aware of the incident of Lakshagrih, the House of Lac only after Pandavas had escaped and returned home after marrying Draupadi. Duryodhan had conspired to burn Pandavas with their mother Kunti alive in the Lakshagrih. Pandavas revered Bhishma highly. On his advice Yudhisthir designated Krishna as the chief guest of honour during his consecration as king of Indraprasth. During disrobing of Draupadi at the game of dice, Bhishma remained a silent witness. He fought

against Arjun, from the side of Kauravas during their confrontation with the army of Matsya king Virat. When Pandavas returned from exile, Bhishma tried to convince Dhritrastra to return their share of the kingdom but could not prevail over Duryodhan’s contention. During the peace mission of Krishna, Bhishma supported his proposal and witnessed his cosmic expansion in the assembly hall. In the Mahabharat war, he accepted the role of commander in chief of the Kauravas army on the condition that he would not kill any of the Pandava brothers. Also, he barred Karna from joining the fight during his leadership of the army. He set up specific rules of the war that both parties accepted. Bhishma fought for ten days. During the war he killed innumerable warriors. He even forced Krishna to break his vow of not taking a weapon to use in the war. On Yudhisthir’s request, Bhishma told him the tactics of how he could be killed. On the tenth day, Shikhandi, the reincarnated Amba as male, attacked him. Bhishma considered Shikhandi a woman due to his previous birth, and as such, declined to engage in combat with him. From behind Shikhandi, Arjun pierced his body with arrows, felling him from his chariot. He remained suspended on the arrows, which were embedded all over his body except the head. This was the end of his fighting in the war. Both Kaurava and Pandava chiefs visited him on his makeshift deathbed to offer respects. Bhishma asked for a support for his head. Duryodhan brought pillows, which he declined to accept. Arjun hit arrows below his head that made a fitting head-support for him. He further asked for water. Arjun pierced the earth

with an arrow. Fresh water sprang out from the earth and poured in his mouth. Karna also came to pay his respect and obtained blessings from him. Bhishma did not die during the war thanks to the boon from his father that enabled him to choose his own time of death. Pandavas won the war. However, Yudhisthir remained grieving over the immense loss of life and utter destruction in the war. Krishna knew that Bhishma was the storehouse of knowledge. He brought Yudhisthir to Bhishma who lay suspended on the bed of arrows. Krishna praised him for his knowledge and virtues and freed him from pain by touching his body. Bhishma informed them that he would relinquish his body in auspicious Uttarayan when the sun moved to the northern direction Krishna requested him to dispel Yudhisthir’s grief. Bhishma agreed and gave a long sermon that continued for many days. He explained the nature of Dharma, duties of kings, duties of people in their different stages and classes, and answered queries from Yudhisthir on many spiritual, political and social issues. Bhishma declared that Krishna was an incarnation of the supreme god Vishnu. He enumerated thousand names of Vishnu, known as Vishnu Sahastranam. After the sermon, Yudhisthir’s grief was dispelled and he took up the kingship. When the time of Bhishma’s departure arrived, Yudhisthir came to see him. He noticed Bhishma surrounded by celestial sages. Bhishma greeted him and confirmed that his time of death was now and took leave of all. Bhishma brought his breath under yogic control and released it through the top of his head. His life breath flew in the sky like a shining star. Pandavas cremated his body on the banks of River Ganga. Bhishma’s mother Ganga came to the site of cremation, lamenting. Krishna reminded her of the reason of her son’s birth and assured her that he had attained his position in heaven. His death anniversary is commemorated as Bhishma Ashtami, on the eighth day of bright fortnight in the month of Magh (JanuaryFebruary). Bhishma is the eldest character of the epic Mahabharat. He was a grandfather of both Kauravas and Pandavas. In the epic, Bhishma Parva describes in detail his exploits in the war, and Shanti and Anushasan Parvas contain his discourses on various disciplines. —Awadhesh Sharma

How to save students from the depraving influence of this era and elevate them to greatness?

The content of this article is taken from the satsang of H.H. Sant Shri Asaram Ji Bapu. Pujya Bapu Ji had addressed the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in September 1993, that was 100 years after Swami Vivekananda addressed the same parliament in September 1893. Unhappy over the religious conversion happening in India, Pujya Bapu Ji tried to find out the reasons for people for the conversion. It was revealed that poor tribals are given the lure of money and they are converted. To stop the conversion of the tribals on the borders of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and areas of Orissa, Pujya Bapu Ji started “Bhjn kro bhojn kro or dehadi lo“program. Under this program the poor tribals are called into the nearby ashrams and asked to chant ‘Hari Om’ the whole day. They are given food twice during the day and at the end of the day they are given Rs 100 per day, so they feel like they are doing some work. They were issued ration cards by the ashrams and are given free grains and other necessities every month. This scheme to stop conversion is in practice from the last around 2 decades. To save the youth who are being ruined due to the lustful festivals like valentine’s day, in 2006 Pujya Bapu Ji initiated celebrations of Matri-Pitri Pujan Diwas (Parents’ worship day) on 14th February. Pujya Bapu ji felt that, due to the blind imitation of Western culture there has been a steep rise in the incidences

of alcoholism, suicide, and other immoral activities, especially among the youth during the last week of December. To rescue the youth from this debauchery and denigration, Pujya Bapu Ji came up with the idea of worshipping a sacred Tulsi plant (Holy basil). So, with a view to awaken the cultural pride of the India and to save the countrymen from mental slavery, in 2013, he initiated celebration of Tulsi poojan on 25th December. In this article, Pujya Bapu Ji talked about the harms India suffered because of Macaulay education syste which destroyed Traditional Indian Educational system. Pujya Bapu Ji says that in the ancient educational system of India, a child was admitted to Gurukul at 5 years and then up to 15 years, such strong moral values were included in him that he could develop such powers as would enable him to gain mastery over this world and the other by leading a simple and restrained life. Even Gods (Devatas) would seek help from human kings like Khatwanga in their war against the Demons (Daityas). Such Strong were the students trained in the Gurukuls. When India was under British rule, Macaulay advised the British Government that until and unless the moral values of Indian culture are destroyed and the Western education system is introduced, it is impossible to make India truly dominated nation. Therefore, the Britishers began to brainwash our Indian people in greater way. Consequently, the restraint,

simplicity and dedication present in the heart of the Indian culture deteriorated, along with the radiance and vigor of the people. Some people call this era `The age of progress`, but I call it the age of utter ruin for students. The injustice being meted out in this age is unprecedented. They used to get pure Desi Cow milk instead they get is tea and coffee. These drinks destroy the youthfulness in many ways. Their memory is impaired. The system of imparting initiation to the students that developed courage, strength and radiance is disarrayed. What they have today is…. I shout and thou shout, who shall carry the dirt out? Desires, cravings, pomp and show are on the rise, eating at the very vital of life. Tea, coffee, Biri, cigarettes, wine, bhang(cannabis), etc. diminish memory power. Desi cow-milk, fresh butter, wheat, rice, walnut, Tulsi(Basil) leaves, etc. increase Life energy and Memory power. Every morning stand before the Sun God with eyes closed, and while focusing the awareness on the point half a centimeter above the navel, contemplate:” `The indigo rays of the Sun are entering my center to develop it’, and then inhale. Sunrays destroys all diseases and give health. Cover your head and seat for 8 minutes facing the Sun and 10 minutes turning your back to the Sun. These eight divine formulas must be adopted in life to make it great. (1) Peaceful Nature: O my children! Learn to be peaceful. Chant O……m…… and be quite for an equal time afterwards. Mediate like this for 10-15 minutes and then see how you become inspired with noble virtues of being calm will increase your memory power, might and give many other benefits too. So cultivate the virtues of calm and concentration. Concentration has been considered the highest of all austerities.

(2) Devotion to Truth: Speaking the truth is very beneficial. Falsehood, fraud and dishonesty seem to work for a short time, but eventually it land one in utter sorrow. Truth in practice please God quickly and bring success in Bhakti, Yoga and Jnana. It purifies the mind quickly. “There is no penance greater than Truth. There is no sin equal to deceit. The one who has a truthful heart, in that heart God himself resides” The truthfulness of Gandhiji is emitting fragrance even now.

To save the youth who are being ruined due to the lustful festivals like valentine’s day, in 2006 Pujya Bapu Ji initiated celebrations of Matri-Pitri Pujan Diwas (Parents’ worship day) on 14th February. Pujya Bapu ji felt that, due to the blind imitation of Western culture there has been a steep rise in the incidences of alcoholism, suicide, and other immoral activities, especially among the youth during the last week of December.

(3) Enthusiasm: Do every single act zealously and diligently, not carelessly. Doing work zealously enhance the efficiency of the doer and gives joy. Doing work without enthusiasm turns into burden. (4) Patience: One whose heart is saturated with patience and right knowledge does not become sad in trivial matters. Even during the gravest ups and downs in his life, he does not become as overwhelmed with them as those without a Guru would become. Even if he fails, he does not get frustrated, instead he finds the cause of failure; discards it diligently engages again in the attainment of lofty goal.

(5) Evenness of mind: Equanimity is the greatest virtue. One should try his best to stay calm and unaffected even in adverse conditions. Practice keeping your mind even in the pain and pleasure. (6) Courage: Be courageous. You can do anything. Discard negative thoughts. Focus on that one aim ( attaining SelfRealization) and success will be ready to become your maid-servant. (7) Humility: A modest person gets re-levied of big predicaments and afflictions and also leaves his impression on other’s hearts. Humility makes a person great, but this does not mean one should salute evil-doers, cunning persons and thugs. One should have sagacity how and where to show modesty. (8) Tolerance: One should increase his tolerance. If mothers says something bitter, let it go, after all she is mother. If father or teacher scold, do not sulk. Do not be agitated. Be patient. Seven extremely harmful things: (1) Loquaciousness: Do not talk a great deal. Be laconic and speak succinctly. (2) Wandering aimlessly: One who wanders or jests much harms himself. (3) Oversleeping: One who oversleeps or sleeps during the day, also suffers great harm. (4) Gluttony: One, who frequently consumes a great deal of food or eats just for the pleasure of eating, impairs his digestion and becomes lazy. (5) Make-up and dressing: Those, who embellish the body overly, indulge in fashionable make up, read racy books (pornography) and associate with such people, become unrestrained, and thereby cause great half to themselves. (6) Inferiority Complex: One who curses himself with the thoughts like – “I am poor; none is there for me, I can’t do anything in life” such a person lags in making

progress. The source of infinite Power, the Supreme Self is within you as your inner self. The person who calls out to Him and makes effort becomes great. Even average frustrated students in the old days, made selfefforts and attained great success. If we write down the stories of such mediocre person who become great, countless pages would be required. (7) Egoism: One who is haughty about his wealth, intellect or abilities does not achieve great heights in life. Such a person destroys his achievements like Ravana. But Lord Rama, having attained the proximity Saga Vashistha, spoke succinctly, giving respect to others while being humble himself. Rising from sleep in the morning he would do meditation. He would bow His head to His parents and Guru. He never tried to demean anyody. He did not practice duplicity or deception. He kept egoism and pride at bay. Know Lord Rama, the mine of Infinite qualities; do not arrogant and proud. AUM PRANAYAM FOR PERFECT PEACE

Jitendra Deo President ASQ

The Vedic Rishis, sages and saints had paved a perfect path of peace and prosperity for mankind. Among them Patanjali Rishi in his thought and practice of YOGA led us to Ashtanga Yoga or the eight-fold path to be walked on with ease. In the present age, Swami Satyapati Parivrajak has enlightened the common man on Yoga Darshan by his discourses and treatises .His book titled "Saral Yoga Se Ishwar Sakshatkar "(Simplified Yoga for God Realization) helps us achieve our aim of Peace : internal and external both. Pranayam , which leads to perfect peace, is a part of the Ashtanga Yoga. This eightfold path of Yoga comprises eight steps to realization of God. These are given hereunder: Yama or social ethics, Niyam or personal ethics, Asana

or correct postures, Pranayam or control of breath, Pratyahara or drawing sensory organs back from sensuous pleasures,Dharana or intense concentration, Dhyana or meditation and Samadhi or communion with the Almighty. Pranayam cleanses a man or a woman of sins and ills. It gives a tremendous power of concentration, patience, perseverance and perfect health to a practitioner. A practitioner's personality achieves an all round development. Peace prevails thereafter. One moves a step closer towards realization of God and attainment of Moksha, that is, emancipation from the bondage of birth, death and rebirth. As per the Vedic philosophy of life, Moksha is the ultimate goal of a soul or the Jeevatma. Pran is our life-giving breath and Ayam means control. In other words Pranayam is control of the speed and sequence of inhalation and exhalation. In this sequence, the air that a person breathes in is called Shvasa and that which is breathed out is Prashvasa. A practitioner of Pranayam controls the process of Shvasa or inhalation and Prashvasa or exhalation as per his or her capacity. With a gradual practice, one may suspend the process of breathing-in and breathing-out for a period of one's own choosing without causing discomfort.

There are certain pre-requisites to embarkation on a practice session. One should go by rules of personal and social ethics called Yama and Niyama. Yama comprises: Love and non-violence, Truth , ShunningUrge to Steal, Celibacy and Nonpossessiveness. Niyam comprises points of personal ethics like cleanliness, contentment (not to be mixed up with lack of initiative), austerity or absence from ostentation, continuous selfstudy and unflinching faith in the Almighty. Of course, a practitioner should learn to sit in the correct posture or Asana in a clean place and in a peaceful environment as far as possible. One should prepare one's self physically and mentally before starting a practice session of Pranayam. Let not the stomach be loaded with undigested food or drinks and let the bowels be empty. Ego, jealousy, avarice, greed, jealousy and other negative

thoughts should be kept out of a practitioner's mind. Under the guidance of a Guru, make a beginning with a chant of AUM. Please exhale gradually and stop the air from making an entry until you feel uncomfortable. When stoppage of air outside the body makes you uncomfortable, breathe- in . One may do it thrice at the beginning. In the second phase, take the breath in and stop it inside. When you feel uncomfortable, take more air in. Then exhale slowly. At the beginning , practice thrice in the morning and thrice in the evening. One may do it many more times later depending on the stamina, will power and perseverance. Of course, intake of a balanced diet which promotes health plays a vital role in successful practices of Pranayam. There may be many variations in the method of practice but the ultimate goal remains the

same as enunciated earlier. Let us pass on to the Bhramari Pranayam. Let the air go out of both the nostrils making a bee-like nasal sound rhythmically. It clears the respiratory passage and generates energy too. A practitioner may be able to keep common cold at arm's length. After a little gap of time, one may practice Kapal Bhati. You may throw out with force through both the nostrils as much air as possible. Let the air come in again effortlessly and repeat the first action. If unbearable, please stop immediately. We may pass on to Bhasrika Pranayam. You may start doing Kapal Bhati in quick time, commencing with exhaling. One may call it internal jogging. Bhasrika tones up the breathing system tremendously and a practitioner will always earn a "Lungs Clear" certificate from his physician. Last but not the least in the present sequence is Nadi-shodhan. Let us start it by exhaling air from the left nostril while keeping the right one closed with the thumb, stopping the air outside till its absence becomes unbearable, inhaling and stopping the air in the lungs until it is time to release through the right nostril. Let this go on with a rhythm till you have completed the beginners' number, viz. - three in a session. One may go on and on with other variations in process but let us now

say : period. One may ask what the mental activity will be while the process of Pranayam is going on. Well meditate on AUM or say silently the Pranayam mantra. It is this : Aum Bhuh, Aum Bhuvah, Aum Swah, Aum Janah, Aum Tapah, Aum Satyam. The meditation or the silent chant will prevent the mind from aimless wandering and distraction. Further, it will enhance a Pranayam practitioner's capacity of concentration of mind tremendously. Let us not be oblivious of the cleansing of mind and bad Sanskara that is going on simultaneously. It is indeed benefit plus. Please remember, dear practitioner, Pranayam is for bodily, mental and spiritual enjoyment of a higher plane and a practitioner should never allow it to degenerate into a burden that may not be easy to carry and difficult to shake off. Wishing you all a happy and healthy Pranayam session for experiencing a spiritual pleasure or VEDIC ANAND. Yog and Meditation- Healing through knowledge The purpose of the Yoga Sutras

is to eliminate human misery by means of knowledge of the self and the universe. This goal of eliminating misery is shared by each of the six Indian spiritual sciences, called darsanas, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is one of them, and is also known as “Yoga-darsanas.” In ancient India, darsana is synonymous with science. The word derives from the root “dras”, which means to see. A darsana helps one see that which is not previously seen or recognized, much as a periscope

or telescope lets one see things that are obstructed or far away. In modern times, the six darsanas are more popularly known as “the six systems of Indian philosophy.” Six different rishis propounded these and are their founding teachers. These teachings do not compete with one another, nor are they mutually exclusive — each addresses a separate topic, but there is overlap. Misery (duhkha) is classified into three kinds:

20 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, September, 2021

• Adhyatmika: Suffering caused by one’s own body and mind — for example, depression, trauma, and frustration. • Adhibhautika: Suffering caused by other beings, such as a bite from a snake or dog. • Adhidaivika: Suffering caused by natural calamities, such as earthquakes, floods, and tornadoes, The highest goal of human pursuit is to completely eliminate these three kinds of misery. This goal and the effort to achieve it is called purusartha. The objective

of all darsanas is to help us in achieving that goal. There are four purusarthas — right conduct, earning wealth, fulfilling physical and mental desires, and liberation from all misery. Liberation is one of the main topics of darsanas. The Six Darsanas Each of the darsanas addresses a different topic. • Sankhya: The distinction between consciousness and nature. The great sage Kapila is considered the founder of this

philosophy. • Yoga: The control of the mind that enables this distinction between consciousness and nature (and the overall goal of Sankhya). Patanjali codified this body of knowledge into the Yoga-darsana. • Nyaya: Methods of investigating the truth (reality), and discussion of proof. Gautama is the author of the Nyayadarsana. • Vaisesika; The discussion of various categories of substances, entities found in the universe,

and atomic theory, and also discussion of proof. This work was developed by Kanada. • Purva Mimamsa (also called Daksina Mimamsa): The discussion of virtuous conduct and the interpretation of ancient texts called Vedas (and associated rituals. Sage Jaimini was the composer of this work. • Vedanta (also called Uttara Mimamsa, or Brahmasutras): The discussion of the nature of God (Brahman). This darsana is attributed to Sage Badarayana. It is a specialist sexual assault and domestic violence support service, prepared this brief article with the aim of raising awareness on the issue of consent and sexual violence as well as promoting IWSS services to community leaders, survivors, and the general multicultural community. Consent and intimacy: Sexual Violence impacts the lives of many people all around the world and in Australia. For many survivors, the negative effects of this form of abuse are wide-ranging and can be long-term. In addition to the impact on the individual, sexual violence has a collective impact on the wellbeing of our communities (Boyd, 2011). What is consent and sexual violence? Sexual violence includes a wide range of unwanted sexual behaviours that someone is pressured, forced, or tricked into doing without agreeing to it. Physical force or the threat of physical force may or may not be present. Due to coercive control, someone can find themselves in a situation of sexual activity that they do not consent to. Consent means giving your free and voluntary agreement to engage in a specific sexual act. Consent can only be given if there is no pressure, force, or fear present and with full understanding of the situation and the nature of the act. Consent can be withdrawn at any time during sex and needs to be sought continuously. It is never ok to continue with a sexual activity if the other person wants it to stop. Healthy sexual intimacy requires the consent of everyone involved (IWSS, 2003). Just because a woman is in a

relationship or married this does not mean that she must consent to sex. In contrast to common belief, most of the perpetrators of sexual violence know the person they abuse beforehand (AIHW, 2020). Sexual abuse can be committed by someone that the person knows and loves. A spouse may be charged with sexual assault based on information provided to QLD Police by the other spouse. Sexual violence is not a private or personal matter. In Australia sexual violence in any form is against the law. Sexual Violence can have many negative impacts on survivors, including but not limited to guilt, shame, embarrassment, fear, nightmares, insomnia, mood swings, memory and concentration problems, flashbacks, panic attacks, anxiety, depression, emotional numbness, sexual dysfunction, eating disorders, relationship problems, social isolation, unwanted pregnancy, infections, and physical injuries (IWSS, 2019; Easteal & McOrmond-Plummer, 2006). Regardless of gender, age, cultural background, or the community they belong to, no-one deserves to be abused. The person being abusive is responsible for their own behaviour. Everyone has the right to feel and be safe. Where to get support? If you need support for Sexual violence or Domestic violence, you can contact Immigrant Women’s Support Services (IWSS). IWSS provides a specialist sexual assault and domestic violence service to women and their children from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The support IWSS offers is free, confidential and includes a range of practical and emotional support.

Among other supports, IWSS provides crisis intervention, safety planning, advocacy, assessment, case management, counselling, information, and referrals to a range of other services. IWSS works closely with specialist service providers in the areas of family law, immigration, domestic violence law, mental health, accommodation, and income support services. IWSS specialises in working with immigrant women and the complexities they face in trying to navigate the justice and support service systems. Immigrant women may also experience a lack of family and social support. IWSS engages interpreters and encourages women to make their own decisions. The support IWSS offers is trauma informed and culturally sensitive. IWSS is respectful of diverse religious and spiritual beliefs. IWSS offers direct support in the Brisbane City Council Area, Monday to Friday 9-4pm. “ARPAN” THE ACT OF GIVING PRESENTED BY NRITYA BHARATI SCHOOL OF KATHAK Brisbane, “Arpan” the act of giving was originally planned for 14th August but had to be postponed due to the snap lock down in Brisbane. The Sold-out event was held on Saturday the 4th of September at Acacia Ridge School auditorium. The Mc for the program was Vinita Khushal and as usual she did a fantastic job. Dr Krishna Majumdar in her welcoming speech thanked Namita Debroy for all that she was doing in the promotion and perseverance of our culture. The following is an introduction to Kathak. The Natya Shas_tra is the world's oldest text or a detailed manuscript written in Sanskrit Language. It is believed to have been written by a Brahman Priest theatrologist and musicologist Bharat Muni (15 Century BCE3rd Century CE). Natya is the Sanskrit word for Dramatic Arts. It is notable as an ancient in-depth work about Indian Art forms, including concept of theatre, dance, music, poetize and religious aesthetics. Thousands of verses structured in different chapters are found in the text that divides dance in two particular forms, namely 1Nrita' that is pure dance which comprise of finesse of hand movements and gesture, and 1nritya' that is

solo expressive dance that focuses on expression. The word 1Kathak' comes from a Sanskrit word called Katha which means story, and a person who tells a story is known as a storyteller or Kathakar. Kathak is a margination of 3 performing art Music, Dance and Drama. Kathak is one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance. Although at the beginning kathak was the story telling but gradually movement became more and more sterilized, and it was more of dance or dance style rather than just storyteller. This ancient classical dance

form that was associated with Hindu epics was well acknowledged by the courts and nobles of the Mughal period. This tradition begun from the 16th Century. Banaras, Lucknow and Jaipurthese are the three gharanas, these gharanas named after the cities where kathak dance tradition evolved. Each gharanas teacher or Guru developed their own style forming the gharanas. These three gharanas were not isolated but had this unique style and they built their own reputes which is now being passed on to generations through the Guru Shishya

Parampara. On the night the group performed North Indian Classical Dance Kathak in Lucknow Gharana under Mrs Namita Debroy’s guidance as she is the Director, Choreographer and Dress designer for “Arpan”. Lalithakalalaya School of Bharatanatyam’s 7th Annual Concert

Lalithakalalaya School of Bharatanatyam’s 7th annual concert, held on the 28th of August, showcased the talents of both its students and the teacher and founder of the school, Smt. Padmalakshmi Sriram. The theme of the concert, Sukhino Bhavanthu, means wellness for everyone and is also the mangala mantra for generating spiritual energy. It was specially chosen to refresh the mood of the participants, creating consciousness to allay fear and vulnerability associated with the forces of nature which hoped to lift all our spirits in the current challenging environment through Bharatanatyam, one of India’s rich cultural heritage. This aim was certainly achieved on that

night. Smt. Padmalakshmi Sriram’s creative talent, passion and devotion in passing on this ancient dance form to the younger generation was displayed through her unique curation, choreography and colourful costumes of the performers. The first segment of the concert was Panchatantra in Natya – the art of storytelling in Bharatanatyam involving 57 young children. In this item the children learn in an enjoyable way to perform using their beautiful eye, hand and leg movements in enacting each Panchatantra story with a moral and philosophical theme. It was truly enjoyable watching the children perform fully immersed in the characters. Sukha Vaibhavam,

rejoicing life was the second segment which featured the dance drama based on the celebration of festivals and their significance. Festivals are the traditional practice of worshipping the supreme power by way of prayer,

sharing of joy, compassion and togetherness through music and dance. This item was again a pleasure to watch the senior students perform alongside the teacher depicting all the major Hindu festivals, Eid Al Fitr and Christmas. It brought about a festive mood and generated a lot of positive energy. A highlight of the concert was the performance of a group of adults, both male and female without much previous training in Bharatanatyam. This group demonstrated that with a dedicated teacher and motivated students, age is no barrier to learn anything. They were truly impressive in the display of some of the intricate movements of this dance form.

One unique feature of Lalithakalalaya School of Bharatanatyam’s concert which everyone looks forward to is watching the guru perform. Smt. Padmalakshmi Sriram

displayed her creativity, mastery, love and divine devotion to this dance on the night. Her performance of Seetha Kalyanam with daughter Shivani was indeed a treat to the senses.

The month of Safar and the misconception of calamities By M. Aslam All praises to Allawh (Sub haa nahoo wa Ta’aalaa) and choicest blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammud Sallal law hu ‘alay hi wa salaam and his noble companions and his family. First of all we make dua that Allah Kareem keep us safe from all types of badness, all types of virus, calamaties etc.and also we make dua for all those who are suffering with covid 19 in different parts of the world and we appreciate the tireless efforts of our government in regard to overcoming this virus. First month Muharram is finishing and second month safar is going to start.lot of misconception does exist regarding this month.let me clear these misconception and bad omen, suppersition etc. Sa-far with a “Sawd” either means ” To turn yellow’ or ‘To be empty/ vacant’ . It was in Autumn when the leaves turn yellow or the homes of the Arabs were empty of their menfolk, that this month was named Safar. This month is also known as, Sa-farul Mu-zaf-far or Safa-rul Khayr, which means, prosperous , successful, good fortune etc. This is to eradicate the corrupt beliefs of some people who say, the month of Sa-far is bad-luck, evil, ill-omened, unfortunate etc., so marriages, major transactions etc. must not be conducted in this month . Our beloved prophet Rasoolullawh Sallallahu

'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) eradicated all superstitious beliefs. Time, day, week, month, year is an estimation and effected by the will of Allawh. If anyone does good at anytime, he will be rewarded accordingly and the effects of evil and sins will be decided by Allah . There are many periods of the lunar calendar and many places in the world where the rewards of good deeds are multiplied and has an adverse result with sins. Our intellect and understanding is limited, therefore we seek divine guidance from the Glorious Quraan and Ahaadees of Rasoolullah Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) . Senior scholars have explained many things to us, in accordance to the Sha-ree’ah, which we must accept and adhere to, if we desire success in both worlds. There is a host of corrupt beliefs regarding this month. True and sincere Muslims should refrain from them and engage in beneficial deeds. In reality, no time or individual is evil originally. All the customs and beliefs of Sa-far are baseless. Many people have erroneous beliefs regarding this month i.e. it is a month of misfortune and calamities. The teachings of Allah Ta’ala and His Most Beloved Rasool (SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam) gives us clear guidelines on such incorrect beliefs. Allah

(Subhanahu

wa

Ta’ala) says in the Qur’an alKareem: ‫ما أصاب من مصيبة إال بإذن هللا‬ “No misfortune befalls except by Allah’s command...” [Surah Tagabun, Verse 11] These erroneous beliefs have also been condemned in the context of the following Ahadith: ‫طة وال هامة والصفر‬ ‫ال عدوى وال ي‬ There is no superstitious owl, bird, no star-promising rain, no bad omen in the month of Safar.[Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5707] ‫ال عدوى وال صفر وال غول‬ There is no bad omen in the month of Safar and no Ghouls (evil spirits). [Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2222] The above Ahadith clearly refutes all incorrect beliefs and superstitions regarding the month of Safar. These incorrect beliefs flow from the pre-Islamic period of Jahiliyyah . The Month of Safar during the Days of Ignorance The Muhaddithin have recorded many of the superstitions harboured by the Arabs during the Days of Ignorance. A few are mentioned below: 1. The pre-Islamic Arabs believed Safar to be a snake which lives in the stomach of a human being and when hungry, bites the person. This is the discomfort one experiences when gripped by the pangs of hunger. 2. Some said Safar are worms which originate in the liver and ribs due to which the colour of the person becomes yellow, a

condition we know today as jaundice. 3. According to some, the month of Safar flanked by Muharram and Rabi al Awwal is full of calamities and misfortune. Incorrect Beliefs: Today too, there are some Muslims who hold incorrect beliefs regarding the month of Safar. 1. A nikah marriage performed in this month would not be successful. 2. This month is full of misfortune and calamities. 3. To commence any important venture, business etc. during this month will bring bad luck. 4. The first to the thirteenth of Safar is illfortune and evil. 5. The person who distributes food or money on the 13th of Safar will be saved from its ill-fortune. 6. To celebrate the last Wednesday of Safar and regard it as a holiday. What to do: 1. To shun all types of erroneous beliefs regarding the blessed month of Safar. 2. To understand that the most unfortunate person is he who disobeys Allah Ta’ala’s commandments e.g. does not perform the five daily salaah etc. It is narrated in a hadith that Rasoolullah (SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam) said: “Pray, 0 Allah! Cause not anyone of us to be a wretched destitute.” He then asked: “Do you know who is a wretched destitute?” Upon the request of the Sahabah (Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhum)

he replied, “A wretched destitute is he who neglects his salaat.” 3. We should understand that all conditions which befalls us, good or bad, favourable, or unfavourable are from Allah Ta’ala, (as a result of our actions). Allah Ta’ala says: ” Whatever misfortune befalls you, it is due to the things your hands have wrought, and He forgives many a sin.” (Surah 42 – Verse 30). This can also be confirmed by the following Hadith: Sayyadina Jabir (Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu) has said that, “I have heard Sayyadina Rasoolullah (SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam) saying, the descending of illness and evil superstition befalling in the month of Safar is untrue.” To believe that the Month of Safar is inauspicious, and particularly to believe that its first thirteen days are ‘bad luck’ or that it is harmful to marry or propose to marry or undertake a journey, etc., during these days are beliefs which are against the teachings of Islam. In pre-Islamic days people considered the Month of Safar to be evil and ominous. Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam strongly rejected such beliefs and ideas. The truth is that no time, day, month or date is in itself evil, but the deeds of people are either good or bad. The time spent in the performance of good deeds will be auspicious and the time spent in sin and the disobedience of Allah Ta’ala will be evil and ominous.

The Month of Safar is not ominous. Evil deeds are ominous and should be given up and repented for. It is incorrect to postpone or delay marriage or its proposal or a journey, etc. because of such beliefs. Rejecting the false beliefs of the days of ignorance Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ‘Belief in ill-omen is Shirk / (he said this thrice) and the owl’s ominousness is nothing.’ The pagan Arabs used to believe that a house near which an owl screeches will be ruined, hence, Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam refuted this belief as false. Thereafter, he said, ‘There is nothing ominous about the Month of Safar’. (Bukhari vol.1 pg.857) The pagan Arabs believed the Month of Safar up to the 13th day to be inauspicious, hence, Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam rejected this superstition. It is therefore wrong for Muslims, who are the followers of Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam, and we have follow his sunnat and his way. May Allah Ta’ala grant us the ability to accept and practice upon all the beautiful teachings of Rasoolullah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam, Aameen. Ya Rub grant us that is good in this world and grant us good that is good in hereafter. And let us live in harmony and peace . Ya Allah alleviate all the problems, conflict, uprise from the world.Ameen Ya Rubbul Aalameen.

Sydney COVID cases seen topping 2,000 a day; Australia ramps up vaccinations CONTD. FROM PG 1 A total of 1,071 COVID-19 cases are currently in New South Wales hospitals, with 177 people in intensive care (ICU), 67 of whom require ventilation. Officials have said they had quadrupled ICU beds to about 2,000 in the state early last year to handle the pandemic. The state reported 1,281 new cases on Monday, most of them in Sydney, down from 1,485 a day earlier. Five new deaths were recorded. Victoria state, which includes Melbourne, reported 246 new cases on Monday, its biggest daily rise of the year. Despite the recent outbreaks, Australia's coronavirus numbers have remained relatively low at around 63,000 cases and 1,044 deaths helped by hard lockdowns and border restrictions. But businesses have had to bear the brunt, with Australia on the brink of a second recession in as many years. Melbourne's giant

observation wheel, part of the city's skyline for more than 15 years, will close permanently due to COVID-related "travel restrictions and sustained shutdowns", its operator said on Monday. Australian Industry Group, meanwhile, has warned the country could face power blackouts in summer if

quarantine-weary workers refuse to cross state borders for repairs and maintenance.

VACCINE RUSH Authorities have pledged more freedom of movement, including opening of state borders, once 70% to 80% of the population aged over 16 is vaccinated, although some

virus-free states may delay their reopening plans due to the Delta outbreak in Sydney. Just over 38% of Australia's adult population has been fully vaccinated, with the country expected to reach 70% by early November based on current rates. The federal government has doubled the available Pfizer

doses for September after last week entering into vaccine swap deals with Britain and Singapore for a total of around 4.5 million doses, with nearly half a million arriving overnight. "There will be another set of flights in a couple of days, but we'll pretty much be getting a million of the four

million every week over the next four weeks," Lieutenant General John Frewen, head of the vaccination taskforce, told broadcaster ABC. Frewen said one million doses of Moderna will also reach Australia in "a week or so", becoming the third vaccine to join the rollout along with Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots.

Is the housing market faring better through lockdowns in 2021? By Eliza Owen, Head of Research Australia at CoreLogic The past 16 months have seen remarkable levels of adaption in the real estate sector, government stimulus and economic decline and recovery. Amid renewed and extended lockdowns, some indicators suggest the housing market has been even more resilient to lockdowns in 2021 than through 2020. But there is some suggestion not all pockets of the housing market remain robust. This article unpacks a few ways housing market performance has evolved through lockdown in 2021 compared with 2020.

Consumer confidence has been more resilient Consumer sentiment is an economic indicator that is generally positively correlated with home sales. This makes sense, given consumers would presumably be optimistic about their own financial situation when deciding to make a large financial commitment like a home purchase. The consumer sentiment response has changed with each new set of extended lockdowns through COVID-19, with the decline in sentiment in 2021 becoming shallower, but lasting longer. Figure 1 compares the ANZ Roy Morgan weekly consumer sentiment index through various lockdowns since March 2020, represented by the shaded areas in the chart.

Through early 2020, which saw the first COVID-19 induced lockdowns in Australia, consumer sentiment had a peak-to-trough decline of -40.1% that lasted six weeks. The second decline, which coincided with rising case numbers and renewed lockdowns across Melbourne, was a peak-to-trough fall of -11.3% that lasted seven weeks. The current lockdown has so far seen a peak-to-trough fall in consumer sentiment that has lasted seven weeks, with a fall of -12.3%. It is likely the hit of lockdowns to consumer sentiment has become ‘shallower’ given consumers now have more information about the economic impact of lockdowns, and importantly, the strong recovery trend that followed stage 2 restrictions last year. Interestingly, the ANZ Roy Morgan index seems to have stabilised above 100, which indicates more people are providing favourable answers to questions around economic and financial conditions. As discussed in the next section, this may also reflect the various monetary and fiscal support provided from 2020 through to early 2021, which has indirectly supported sales and listings of residential real estate.

Transaction activity has declined, but not as heavily as last year Initial stage 2 restrictions in 2020 coincided with a drop in sales volumes nationally through April of -33.9%. This

included a fall in Sydney sales of -36.7%, and -40.3% across Melbourne. The fall in sales was associated with transactions being harder to carry out amid restrictions, low levels of consumer confidence, and the level of employment falling by about 600,000 jobs through the same month, which may have disrupted intentions to purchase property. While social distancing restrictions have been reinstated across much of the country, other factors are much more conducive to property sales still taking place. Through 2020, lockdown periods saw the accumulation of household savings (which skyrocketed to 21.6% through the June 2020 quarter, and remains elevated). The cash rate was set to a record low 0.1% in November, and the average cost of debt has continued to decline. Sydney lockdowns have also seen a much milder decline in employment levels, with the number of people employed falling -0.9% across NSW over July 2021, as opposed to -5.9% through April 2020. Amid these factors, sales volumes have seen a far milder decline through lockdowns. In the month of July, CoreLogic estimates sales volumes have fallen -3.7% in Sydney. However, the longer lockdowns are extended, the further sales volumes are likely to fall. The fall in newly advertised stock has also been milder through 2021. For the week ending August 29, there were around 1,350 new properties added to the market across

Sydney. This is about -23% lower than the five year average prior to COVID-19, but the number has been climbing. Assuming new listing volumes continue to climb, this marks a peak-to-trough decline of -37.5% of new listings added to market since the onset of the Sydney lockdowns, compared to a peak to trough decline of -52.4% through restrictions in

early 2020. This can be seen in Figure 2A, which shows new listings added to the market, with periods of lockdown shaded. Listings have not declined as sharply through current lockdown conditions across Sydney when compared to 2020. Figure 2B shows that Melbourne has seen a steeper decline in new listings amid

the start of the lockdown since August. However, the city has also seen more volatility because lockdowns have been more frequent. On average, weekly new listings across Melbourne (1,765) have actually been higher than in Sydney (1,577), and are higher than the average weekly listings added across Melbourne through the whole of 2020 (1,345).

Australian housing boom continues to lose steam as national home values rise another 1.5% in August Australian housing values continued to record a broadbased rise despite the disruption from lockdowns. According to CoreLogic’s national home value index, dwelling values rose 1.5% in August; a rate of growth that is still well above average, but the lowest monthly rise since January. The lift in housing values continues to be broad-based, with every capital city, apart from Darwin (-0.1%) recording a rise in values throughout the month, although it is important to note CoreLogic has withheld the Perth and Regional WA index results pending the resolution of a divergence from other housing market measurements in WA. The August home value index provides further confirmation that the rate of price growth is moderating after moving through a peak in March of this year. At that time, national home values had risen 2.8% in a month, led by Sydney where dwelling values were up 3.7%. According

to CoreLogic's research director, Tim Lawless, the slowing rate of growth probably has more to do with worsening affordability constraints than ongoing lockdowns. “Housing prices have risen almost 11 times faster than wages growth over the past year, creating a more significant barrier to entry for those who don’t yet own a home. Lockdowns are having a clear impact on consumer sentiment, however to date the restrictions have resulted in falling advertised listings and, to a lesser extent, fewer home sales, with less impact on price growth momentum. It’s likely the ongoing shortage of properties available for purchase is central to the upwards pressure on housing values.” The August update takes Australian housing values 15.8%higher over the first eight months of the year and 18.4%above levels a year ago. In dollar terms, the

34 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, September, 2021

annual increase in national dwelling values equates to approximately$103,400, or $1,990 per week. In comparison, Australian wages are rising at the average annual rate of 1.7%. According to Tim Lawless, this is the fastest annual pace of growth in housing values since the year ending July 1989. “Through the late 1980’s, the annual pace of national home value appreciation was as high as 31%, so the market isn’t quite in unprecedented territory. The annual growth rate at the moment is trending higher, in fact, it is 3.6 times higher than the thirty-year average rate of annual growth.” Capital city houses are continuing to record a stronger growth rate relative to units, however the performance gap does appear to be narrowing. Throughout the first quarter of the year, capital city house values were rising approximately 1.1 percentage points faster than units each month. By August the average

performance gap reduced to 0.7 percentage points. Mr Lawless believes the convergence of growth in house values and unit values could be another demonstration of affordability becoming more challenging. “The narrowing gap between house and unit value growth is most noticeable in Australia’s most expensive city, Sydney, where the monthly growth rate for houses was 2 percentage points higher than units in March. That ‘gap’ has now reduced to 0.6 percentage points in August. Based on median values, Sydney units cost almost $470,000 less than a house. At the same time, the growth gap between houses and units in Melbourne and Brisbane has widened.” Both advertised supply and housing demand have been negatively impacted over recent months. In early May, newly advertised properties were tracking 19.7%above the fiveyear average, however due to

both lockdowns and seasonal factors, the number of new listings through August dropped to -5.8% below the five-year average and total active listings were -29.4% below average. The estimated number of home sales has also been impacted, dropping by -9.0% nationally over the three months ending August when compared to the previous three-month period. Despite the fall in sales, housing market activity remains well above average levels. “Although there has recently been a trend towards fewer buyers, the past three months has seen the number of home sales remain 30% above the five-year average at a time when active listings are -29% below average,” Mr Lawless said. “We are still seeing a disconnect between advertised supply and housing demand, even in the cities where lockdown restrictions are active which is keeping upwards pressure on housing prices despite challenges faced by both

buyers and sellers.” Strong selling conditions can also be seen in auction clearance rates and private treaty measures. “Auction clearance rates have trended lower, especially in Melbourne where a large proportion of auctions have been withdrawn from the market. However, where properties have proceeded to market, the large majority are recording a successful result, albeit with a large proportion selling prior to the auction rather than under the hammer,” Mr Lawless said. Similarly, the median number of days it takes to sell a property is showing a mild upwards trend, however most cities, including those navigating extended lockdowns, are continuing to see homes sell in 30-35 days or less. At the same time, vendor discounting rates remain at record lows implying most vendors aren’t budging much on their initial pricing expectations.

India, US keeping close watch on Pakistan’s actions in Afghanistan: Harsh Shringla India is closely engaged with the US on developments in Afghanistan, and both sides have adopted a wait and watch policy towards the Taliban and are calibrating their actions in response to the evolving situation. India and the US are carefully watching Pakistan’s actions in Afghanistan in light of Islamabad’s role in backing the Taliban, foreign secretary Harsh Shringla said as he wound up a three-day visit to Washington during which the situation in the war-torn country was a key part of discussions. Shringla also told reporters in Washington on Friday that India has had a “limited” engagement with the Taliban, during which the group indicated it would be “reasonable in the way they handle things”. His remarks came against the backdrop of the rapidly evolving situation in Afghanistan, where the Taliban is set to form government after sweeping to power in Kabul on August 15. Shringla spoke hours before Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief, Lt Gen

Faiz Hameed, became the first senior Pakistani leader to fly into Kabul for talks with the Taliban. Shringla noted Pakistan has extended backing to the Taliban, and said India and the US will assess Pakistan’s actions in Afghanistan with a “fine-tooth comb”. “They (US) will obviously see how different players get engaged in the situation in Afghanistan. Pakistan is a neighbour of Afghanistan. They have supported and nurtured the Taliban. There are various elements there that Pakistan supported, so its role has to be seen in that context,” he said. India is closely engaged with the US on developments in Afghanistan, and both sides have adopted a wait and watch policy towards the Taliban and are calibrating their actions in response to the evolving situation, he added. Shringla contended that India’s concerns related to Afghanistan, especially the use of Afghan soil for terrorism, had been addressed in a UN resolution adopted last month. This resolution, he said,

mentioned UN-designated terror groups such as Jaishe-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). “So we do have concerns about the free ingress that these two terrorist groups have had in Afghanistan, their role and we will watch that carefully,” he said. Shringla acknowledged that India currently has no immediate substantial engagement with Afghanistan, and described New Delhi’s contacts with the Taliban as limited. “Our engagement with them (Taliban) has been limited. It’s not that we have

Thousands of farmers reach Muzaffarnagar for mega rally MUZAFFARNAGAR: Farmers on all kinds of vehicles — from several UP districts as well as from other states — began to reach Muzaffarnagar earlier this week for the Kisan Mahapanchayat to be held on Sunday. On Saturday, more than 10,000 farmers from Agra region managed to dodge the local police and travelled through different routes — particularly the smaller village roads — to reach Muzaffarnagar by evening. Police and local intelligence officers had been putting pressure on them not to leave for the event, they alleged. Samyukt Kisan Morcha

has, meanwhile, arranged over 200 buses to ferry farm association workers from Bihar, Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

to Muzaffarnagar. Senior members of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) claimed 50,000 farmers left for the city venue from Rajasthan and Haryana on Saturday afternoon.

Farmers to hold mahapanchayat in Muzaffarnagar today Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of 40 farmer unions, said thousands of people from across the country were set to take part in the ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ Security has been stepped up in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar ahead of Sunday’s ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ in the district, with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of 40

farmer unions, saying that thousands of people from across the country were set to take part in the meeting. The SKM, which is at the forefront of the protest against the three contentious farm laws, said that gathering will prove that their agitation has the support of “all castes, religions, states, classes, small traders and all sections of the society”.

“The mahapanchayat of September 5 will make the Yogi-Modi governments realize the power of farmers, farm labourers, and supporters of the farm movement. The Muzaffarnagar mahapanchayat will be the biggest ever in the last nine months,” the SKM said in a statement. Muzzafarnagar is the home district of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait,

a robust conversation. But from whatever conversations we’ve had so far, the Taliban seem to indicate they will be reasonable in the way they handle things,” he said. “I don’t see members of the international community being passive over the situation in Afghanistan. We are not there on the ground, [we] have no assets there. It’s not like we are not doing anything, we are in touch with every country that has an interest in Afghanistan,” he added. After months of informal contacts with the group, India’s ambassador to Qatar, Deepak Mittal, held talks with

senior Taliban leader Sher Mohammed Abbas Stanekzai on Tuesday, the first officially acknowledged contact between the two sides. During the meeting held at the Taliban’s request, the India side raised its concerns about Afghan soil being used for anti-India activities and terror. Shringla met US secretary of state Antony Blinken and other senior American officials during his visit, and the situation in Afghanistan figured prominently in discussions. The ISI chief arrived in Kabul with a high-level delegation for talks with the top Taliban leadership on security and other issues. Unnamed Pakistani military officials told the media in Islamabad on Thursday that the ISI chief would work with the Taliban to help reorganise the Afghan Army. Unlike a low-key visit to Kabul by the CIA chief, Lt Gen Hameed was spotted in the lobby of a hotel along with the Pakistani ambassador and even spoke to Pakistani journalists. The ISI chief’s visit coincided

with reports of divisions within the Taliban over government formation and the allocation of powers. The reports said there were differences between the camp of senior leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and the Haqqani Network, which has long-standing and close ties with Pakistan’s military establishment. There were also reports of differences between the leaders from the political office in Doha, such as Baradar, and the commanders on the ground, including Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, the son of Taliban founder Mullah Mohammad Omar, over the allocation of powers in the new set-up. People familiar with developments said on condition of anonymity that the ISI is working to ensure security-related departments, such as intelligence, defence and interior, are retained by the Haqqani Network. The ISI chief’s visit to Kabul is being seen in the context of these differences and efforts to protect the interests of the Haqqani Network, the people said.

The ruling Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) ties with the Swabhimani Paksha, led by Raju Shetti, appear to be souring, with Shetti saying on Saturday that it was up to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to fulfill the promise of giving one seat in the state legislative council to his party “or stab him in the back”. The decision (to appoint him as a MLC) was taken by us but the final decision has to be made by the governor. I am surprised how come he can make such a statement. We have honestly done our work. Hepatitis B should not stop love If you have been diagnosed with hepatitis B you can have a girlfriend, boyfriend, get married and have children, just like anyone else.

How is hepatitis B transmitted? The main ways hepatitis B is transmitted are: • At birth, if the mother has hepatitis B (the most common way to be infected particularly in people born overseas due to poor prevention) • Blood to blood transmission – including through medical, dental and cosmetic practices using unsterile equipment (particularly those performed overseas), tattoos, piercings, sharing personal hygiene equipment including razors and toothbrushes, sharing injecting drug equipment, and traditional practices that involve skin penetration • Sexual transmission How is hepatitis B NOT transmitted? • Hugging and kissing • Preparing or sharing food, drinks or eating utensils • Sharing bathrooms, showers, toilets or towels • Sneezing or coughing • Insects bites • Any other social contacts If you do have hepatitis B what should you do? Hepatitis should not stop you from having relationships and getting

married. Telling a potential partner that you have hepatitis B can sometimes be scary – especially if you really like/love the person. You should know that you deserve and can have a happy and fulfilling relationship with an accepting person. Hepatitis B can be easily prevented from passing on to your partner and children. You may want to have information to help you and your loved ones. You can access information at www. eccq.com.au/bbv including the B Healthy booklet and the Hepatitis B factsheet in different languages. You can also talk to us and we can help you to talk to your partner if need. If you have hepatitis B you may want to:

• Disclose or not disclose to your partner but you will need to ask your partner to get tested and vaccinated if needed. Your partner may have already had immunity (protection) to hepatitis B due to a past hepatitis B infection or the hepatitis B vaccination. Many people had a hepatitis B in the past and cured naturally without even knowing they had it. • Always using a condom if your partner is not immune to hepatitis B or before completing hepatitis B vaccinations. Condoms can also prevent other STIs and pregnancy. You will also need to: • have regular life-long check-ups with your doctor including liver function tests, viral load, Fibroscan,

and ultrasound for certain groups and take treatment if required. The chance of developing serious liver diseases like liver cancer will be very low, and you can live a normal life like others. • keep a healthy life style and avoid alcohol. Remember most adults (95%) will not develop chronic hepatitis B after being infected, they will clear the virus within 6 months without treatment and also will not get it again. All people who are going to start a new sexual relationship should have a sexual health check to make sure they don’t have any infections that can be passed sexually, this includes hepatitis B (even if they have never had sex) and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) e.g. chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea. This can be done either at your GP or a sexual health clinic: (https://www.health.qld.gov. au/public-health/topics/ sexual-health/find-a-sexualhealth-service). What about having children? Hepatitis B is not a genetic disease. Most mothers with hepatitis B can have a hepatitis B free baby in Australia. If the mother has hepatitis B they should: • See their doctor as

soon as they know they are pregnant. • Have their viral load (DNA) checked during pregnancy so treatment can be provided if it is high to help reduce the risk of passing on the infection during the birth. • Any baby born to mother with hepatitis B is given the usual hepatitis B vaccination at birth as well as hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) to protect the baby. • Babies born to mothers who have hepatitis B can breastfeed their babies because breastmilk doesn’t contain the virus. Breastfeeding should only be avoided if their nipples are cracked and bleeding – they should then wait until they have healed. • Mothers can give birth to their baby naturally and will only need caesarean sections if it is deemed medically necessary. If a father has hepatitis B: • He cannot pass the infection to the baby when the baby is conceived

AFL 2021: Final four contenders revealed after thriller at Gabba A thriller at the Gabba has

ended one side’s season and handed the other a preliminary final date with the Port Adelaide Power. A scrappy Laitham Vandermeer behind in the dying seconds handed the Western Bulldogs a stunning one-point victory over Brisbane in a thrilling and pulsating sudden-death semi-final at the Gabba on Saturday night. The Lions have now gone out of the finals in straight sets for the second time in three years as tempers boiled over with police restraining one supporter who was abusing the match

officials as they left the ground with the free kick count of 28-19 against Brisbane.

While the umpires had far too much say in the contest with howlers against both teams, when

the match was in the balance, a brilliant left-foot goal to Bulldogs star Bailey Smith from 40 metres out broke the deadlock with two minutes left in the match. A running Zac Bailey goal levelled the scores with 78 seconds remaining before Vandermeer rushed a behind with a toe poke to put the visitors in front to break the hearts of Brisbane. Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli left the field late with a knee issue and the club will sweat on his availability ahead of the preliminary final date with Port Adelaide in Adelaide.

Rohit Sharma scores first overseas century in 'sensational' fashion against England

Clinched with a six down

the ground, Rohit Sharma's first overseas century swung the momentum of an oscillating fourth test India's way despite a late double intervention by England paceman Ollie Robinson on the third day at the Oval. Bad light brought an early end to play on Saturday — to groans from the crowd, given the state of the match — with India closing on 2703 and with a lead of 171 runs. The tourists hauled themselves back in front on the back of 127 by Sharma, the classy right-handed opener whose shot-making all around the ground lit up a sometimes-gloomy day in south London. The way he brought up three figures — with a cleanly struck, straight six off spinner Moeen Ali — was classic Sharma, ending his eight-year wait for a hundred outside India. "He's gone big! That's going to be six runs. What a way to get to a hundred," a commentator remarked. "Here he has his first overseas hundred, and what a place to get it - England. "He's just been sensational." By that stage, India had turned the game on its head after starting the day on 430, trailing by 56 runs after England eked out a 99-run lead after the first innings. However, just as it looked like England was being batted out of the game, Robinson was handed the new ball and he took two wickets in the first over with it. Ending a second-wicket partnership of 153 runs, Sharma was early on a loosener from Robinson and top-edged a pull straight to Chris Woakes at long leg. That was from the first delivery with the new ball. Off the sixth, Cheteshwar Pujara (61) got an inside edge off a delivery that nipped back in, and it careered off his thigh pad and was caught by Ali at gully. Given not out on the field, a review confirmed the inside edge and the atmosphere immediately changed inside the Oval. That left India on 237-3 and with two new batsmen in the middle. The game was back on.

Virat Kohli (22) and Ravindra Jadeja (9), who was again sent in up the order, held firm and put on 33 for the fourth wicket until bad light forced England to bowl only spin, or go off. After an over each of Joe Root and Ali, Root had enough and put the ball in the hands of Woakes, a seamer. That automatically resulted in the players walking off the field with about an hour left to play, just as things were building to a crescendo. They didn't return. India has the edge but a couple of early wickets on the fourth day will change that. "Anything around 250 will be a good target for us to aim at," said Pujara, who batted for much of his innings with a sore left ankle after rolling it while turning at the nonstriker's end. The series is locked at 1-1 with one more test to come, at Old Trafford starting next week. It couldn't be closer. Much of that is down to Sharma, who shared an 83run stand with KL Rahul and then easily the biggest partnership of the match with Pujara. A couple of highlights of Sharma's eighth test century was a textbook straight drive for four in the morning, and a paddle-sweep to the boundary after lunch. "He has been batting well throughout the series and it was time he converted the fifties into a big one," Pujara said. "It was a pleasure to watch from the non-striker's end." Sharma was, though, dropped early on day three by Rory Burns, who got a hand to an edge off Woakes when diving to his right at second slip but couldn't hold it. Burns had also squandered a chance off Sharma in the cordon late Friday, not even getting a hand to the ball on that occasion because the sun was in his eyes. The only wicket to fall before lunch was Rahul, who tickled an edge behind off Jimmy Anderson for 46. The umpire didn't give him out despite England's appeals, but Root reviewed and UltraEdge showed a small spike. Rahul shook his head as he walked off the field, not believing he got a touch.

Film review by Rama Gaind Film Toofaan Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Amazon Prime

By Rama Gaind

Bollywood version of Muhammad Ali, Toofan (means storm, tempest, hurricane) is totally believable. This mainstream Hindi-language film (with English sub-titles) has the punches and jabs placed in the right spots — just so. The elements of the boxing ring are familiar, done to perfection! Aziz Ali (Farhan Akhtar, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dil Chahta Hai), aka Ajju Bhai, is a small-time gangster known for his strong punches in street fights, but then he’s inspired to take up boxing after seeing Ali’s picture. Now that his mind is made up, nothing is going to get in his way as he practises with commitment and convinces a much-favoured coach,

A

Narayan Prabhu (Paresh Rawal) to take him on as a student. The demanding, cantankerous Prabhu then comes down hard on Aziz, believing in his ability to become high-quality boxer. Thrown into the mix is an obvious storyline factor: there has to be some romance, which is provided by a pretty, lively, local doctor – in the shape of Ananya (Mrunal Thakur, Jersey, Batla House, Super 30). Award-winning director Mehra (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Rang De Basanti) doesn’t recoil from intertwining elements of humanity and depicting prejudice among the cultural and social classes. In fact, he decorates them up with enough selfassurance and crispness so we, too, are in the same corner to cheer Aziz Ali. With evident shades of Rocky … for a sports film, Mehra keeps the pace unexpectedly measured … with writers Vijay Maurya and Anjum Rajabali, intermittently adding spicy twists and turns to the dialogue. Farhan Akhtar, who is also an accomplished director, screenwriter, playback singer, producer and television host, plays

In a film where the standard story and unwarranted running time (three hours!) are downsides, it’s Akhtar’s commanding acting and some sincere moments that – kind of bind the film together.
