Rep. Johnson on award and budget WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement after receiving the Humane Advocate Award from the Humane Society: “I am very grateful to receive the Humane Advocate Award from the Humane Society,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Since arriving to Congress I have been an advocate for animals and have fought to protect endangered and exotic animals to combatting horse slaughter and inhumane factory farming practices. We must continue to recognize our responsibility in protecting endangered species and fight for continuous animal welfare funding.” Most recently, she received a 100 percent on a legislative scorecard by the Humane Society for her support in Congress on numerous measures. WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement after voting no on a Republican Balanced Budget constitutional amendment designed to force deep cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security: “The GOP tax scam mortgaged the future of our seniors and our families in order to give even more money to Wall Street, Pharmaceutical companies, big corporations and the wealthiest 1 percent,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Now after adding trillions in higher deficits, Republicans want to amend our Constitution to force America’s seniors to give up the pillars of their retirement security to pay for the GOP’s giveaways to the wealthiest. I’m not going along with this sham so Republicans can destroy Medicare and Social Security.” Earlier this week, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office found that the giveaways of the GOP tax scam, overwhelmingly going to big corporations and the wealthiest 1 percent, are exploding the deficit by even more than originally projected; now by nearly $2 trillion

in higher deficits. Now, a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities finds that, if revenues are not raised to help reach balance, the GOP Balanced Budget Amendment would require deep cuts in key programs, such as Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid. The report finds that, if the cuts mandated by this flawed GOP BBA are spread proportionately, tens of millions of seniors, children, working families, and veterans would be impacted: • Social Security would be cut by $325 billion in 2025 alone, and by a total of $2.6 trillion through 2028; • Medicare would be cut by $200 billion in 2025 alone, and by a total of $1.7 trillion through 2028; • Medicaid, CHIP, and ACA subsidies would be cut by $150 billion in 2025 alone, and by a total of $1.2 trillion through 2028; and • Veterans’ disability compensation and other benefits would be cut by $30 billion in 2025 alone, and by a total of $250 billion through 2028. In preparing this report, the CBPP assumes that the balanced budget requirement would go into effect in 2025. It also

assumes that, in order to hit the balanced budget target in 2025, Congress would start cutting programs in 2020. As AARP wrote in urging Members of Congress to oppose the amendment, “A balanced budget amendment would likely harm Social Security and Medicare, subjecting both programs to potentially deep cuts without regard to the impact on the health and financial security of individuals… Individuals who have contributed their entire working lives to earn a predictable benefit during their retirement would find that their retirement income and health care out of pocket costs would vary significantly year-to-year, making planning difficult and peace of mind impossible… AARP opposes the adoption of a balanced budget amendment that puts Social Security and Medicare at risk.” “I’m a strong believer in real fiscal responsibility, not this cynical gimmick that is a pretext for GOP cuts to Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid,” Congresswoman Johnson continued. “We need to keep the promises we made to our seniors and our veterans, create more good-paying jobs, and reduce deficits in a responsible and sustainable manner.”

What is Whitmore’s Mission? It’s not the Constituents!

cans before researching the accomplishments and Community investment of the Candidates, and the like when proposing ideas or even running for public office? Which brings me to the subject of Bridgett Whitmore; she is an African American Attorney who has chosen to run for office and for the seat of Judge. She is no more a part of Black Dallas and the southern sector than DONALD TRUMP. She has chosen to run against noted and accomplished bench warrior Judge Carl Ginsberg, however it amazes me that African Americans and folks like Bridgett Whitmore have gotten a sense of being owed something from our community all because they are BLACK. She has not even worked to establish herself in the African American community on topics or issues at-large. She appears not to be doing a good job of handling her campaign, and let alone the fact that she has not even availed herself to the minority media. Whitmore appears not interested in doing Interviews and revealing her reasons for running for Judge. Bridgett Whitmore “what are you hiding?” It appears that Atty. Whitmore does not have a good grip on her Campaign management let alone the fact that she has yet to avail herself to the Public or southern sector at large, which you know as a candidate you have to run for all of the county not just part of the county. As a Judicial candidate you’re representing all of Dallas County, Caucasians, Hispanics, and the like so with that being said, it amazes me that as a campaigner, the African-American community and its readership does not deserve the opportunity to have this candidate present yourself to the community so that we can understand what your platform is, and what you stand for?. It is insulting to me, and it should be insult-

ing to the African-American community that an individual can run for office and yet not avail themselves or let you appreciate their talents and be able to discern whether or not they appeal to us as African-American and minorities and understanding where they work from, and where they come from, who they are, and what they stand for, what their merits are, or anything. It’s tragic that we have people in this race going into a runoff as in Bridgett Whitmore, who has no dealings with the community, and no notable work in Dallas County to anyone’s knowledge and then chooses not to avail herself so that nobody can write in and tell what Bridgett Whitmore stands for, or how she stands, because she’s not standing for people of our Community. Please know and understand that I want you to be more selective for yourself, that you may be more selective for others. It would be a tragedy to vote for a person like Bridgett Whitmore, an unproven, and unaccomplished candidate just because she is black and has degrees from Yale and Tulane respectively, but no skins on the wall for the community at large, or any real work for all that matters, and then jeopardize a fine and practical Judge in the person of Judge Carl Ginsburg who the” ELITE NEWS” will Support and Endorse. If Bridgett Whitmore is hiding something now, what will she hide on the Bench? And furthermore Ms. Whitmore please be better educated on the landscape, and be a better steward of your Image and candidacy, especially since you are not available, (3) calls went in to Whitmore with no return call.

Women and World Peace

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

It is difficult to watch a television news program or read a newspaper without experiencing the horrors of wars, and ruBY REP. EDDIE mors of wars BERNICE JOHNSON in our world. From Nigeria to Nepal, from the Middle East to the Korean Peninsula, from Venezuela to Ukraine nations are deeply unsettled, and prepared to resolve conflict with instruments of war that would bring about the end of life as we know it. It need not be that way. Often, war and its ugly aftermaths are caused by wrong-headed decisions made during moments of bewilderment by government and individuals. I remain proud that I was among those in Congress that voted against our country’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. Our invention led to the destabilization of the Middle

East, and chaos that still confronts us fourteen years later. And while the world appears to be in turmoil because of conflicts, we must never cease our struggle to find equitable and lasting peace. Women will play, and have played, crucial roles in our pursuit of a world free from conflicts that threatened our existence. Women, who bring life into the world, have more than a casual interest in conflict resolution. Research by peace advocates has shown that the involvement of women in efforts to bring about peace is critical , and often times leads to a quicker resolution of conflict. Peace negotiations in which women have a central role are more likely to succeed than those where the dominant players are men, researchers have concluded. History is replete with incidences of peaceful solutions to war in which were involved in seeking peace. It was the involvement of women in a brutal years-long war in Liberia that brought about an end to that horrific conflict. In South Africa, the end of apartheid was hastened, in part, by the role of women, including those from the

African National Congress and the Black Sash. On the 28th of April hundreds of women from throughout North Texas and the country will convene in an annual women’s peace conference that I host. This year we will meet at the University of North Texas School of Law in Dallas. The attendees include businesswomen, social activists, and elected officials, members of the clergy, educators, homemakers and many more. We will be of one common mind: How do we bring about peace in the world in the hearts of men and women. As we bring greater visibility to conflicts and their victims, we will search for solutions that will bring peace; something that we believe is achievable through education, financial security, employment and affordable housing. The hours that we spend together will result in lasting relationships as women and men who attend leave with a greater commitment to ensuring the survival of humankind, and creating communities of peace throughout the world.

Men’s golf wins SWAC championship for first time in 40 years ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Prairie View A&M men’s golf team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Golf Championship for the first time since 1979 in a dominant 54-hole performance at Oak Wing Golf Club. The Panthers led after every round of the three-day, 54-hole championship, shooting a team score of 891, pulling away to win by 31 strokes ahead of six-time defending champion Alabama State (922). Texas Southern finished third (927), Alcorn State fourth (952), and Arkansas-Pine Bluff fifth (1032). “I’m getting chill bumps in hearing that,” said second-year head golf coach Kevin Jennings, the SWAC’s Coach of the Year, of the 14th men’s conference championship in program history. “It’s still a little surreal. I feel we’re catching manna from heaven and some blessings that I didn’t expect so quickly. I thought we had a good opportunity. For weeks, according to Golfstat, we were the highest ranked team in the conference, but that’s on paper. We all know you still have to play the matches. These guys went out and did what we needed them to do, which was execute.”

The Panthers got on the national map in September with a second-place finish in the prestigious National Black College Hall of Fame Tournament in Atlanta, finishing second in the nearly 20-team field of HBCU programs, and built from there to today’s championship. Prairie View A&M had the top three spots on the leaderboard, led by Laurence Crea. The Cypress, Texas native earned both low medalist (MVP) and Freshman of the Year honors after shooting threeover par 220 (6776-77) for the tournament. John Jones was one shot behind at 221 (7373-75), with Zane Brooks just behind Jones (222; 72-75-75). David

Baker Jr. shot 229 (74-73-82) to finish tied for fifth as all four PVAMU players earned first-team All-SWAC honors. Jordan Stagg’s 244 (84-79-81) completed the scoring for PVAMU. Crea’s five-under 67 on Monday was the only under par round of the tournament and proved to be tone-setter for the week for him and the Panthers. “For me, and I think for the team, I knew one of our guys was struggling on Monday,” said Crea, who won district

championships at Cypress (Tex.) Fairbanks High. “For me, it was about getting as low as I can to help the team out as best as I can. Whether that’s five-under or whatever I could do to get lower was my whole plan to help and lead our team the best way I could.” Prairie View A&M men’s golf will learn its NCAA Tournament destination on Wednesday, May 2 on the Men’s Golf Tournament Selection Show at 4:30 p.m. Golf Channel.

Lady Panthers Split Doubleheader with TAMCC PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M softball team split a double header Tuesday afternoon with Texas A&M Corpus Christi, winning 1-0 in game one and dropping game two 11-4. Game one PV 1, TAMCC 0 In game one the Lady Panthers managed just one run which came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kelsey Coronado singled into centerfield, allowing pinch runner Cameron Lavergne to score the game winning

run. Sophomore Taylor Drury pitched a complete game no hitter for the Purple and Gold. The San Antonio native struck out six batters on 83 pitches to get her first win of the season. Game two TAMCC 11, PV 4 Texas A&M- Corpus Christi got on the board first scoring one run on one hit to make the score 1-0 in the top of the second inning. The Islanders added two more runs in the third to make the score 3-0.

Fighting for what is just and right even when the status quo pushes back www.texasmetronews.com

On the Trail with Rosales This past Friday, I had a chance to attend an event honoring Emmy Award-winning journalist, Jorge Ramos. Born in Mexico City, Ramos is an immigrant. Since 1986, he has been called “the voice of the voiceless” for other immigrants like him. His new book, Stranger, discusses the challenge of a Latino immigrant in the Trump Era. You may remember him as the reporter who asked Trump a question and was thrown out of the press conference by a hate-filled bodyguard. Ramos points out that if Trump had treated him differently, his supporter would not have treated him as he did. It was the beginning stages of how Trump’s words would incite violence against minorities and other marginalized communities. Ramos stresses that hatred is contagious and that Trump is infectious. He urges everyone to resist hatred and to spread love through our work. Ramos’ book tour could not be more timely. As we also remembered Dr. King’s life and 50th year of his martyrdom this past week, we realized that we have much more work to do to correct injustices in our communities. Dr. King was cognizant of the « interrelatedness of all communities» and that « whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. » There is chapter in Ramos’ book where he writes to his children : « [A]s the children of a very appreciative immigrant, I simply ask you to fight, to the extent you can, so that [we can all] have the same opportunities that [we] have enjoyed. It’s more than karma, more than a simple, ethical question : it’s about giving back a little bit of what we’ve received. » As a first generation American, who grew up in three different countries and speak three different languages, I relate with his message. He quotes a Tibetan-

Proverb that deeply resonated with me : “Wherever you have friends, that is your country, and wherever you receive love, that is your home.” Dallas has been my home for almost 19 years. I, like so many, am a transplant to Dallas. My journey in this community begun as a young adult when I moved to Dallas to pursue my college career. I spent a summer at Mountain View College and a about a year at Richland Community College before enrolling to Southern Methodist University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in 2003. I attended Texas Wesleyan School of Law and earned my Juris Doctorate in 2007. Over almost two decades, I’ve seen how much Dallas has changed and grown. But I have also witnessed how our city’s economic growth and quality of life improvements have not trickled down to everyone. While skyscrapers continue to be erected in the downtown and uptown areas and green spaces and parks are preserved and created in east Dallas and north Dallas, 31% of our children live in poverty. As a former Municipal and Community Court Judge, I heard many stories of individuals who did not know their rights during their eviction appeal and suffered defaults from creditors when they did not know how to answer suit. These life-altering experiences often led these individuals to feel like institutions were rigged against them. They found themselves in bankrucpy proceedings and homeless. Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsberg once said that she would like to be remembered

Follow us on issuu.com/bitsandpieces

as « someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the best of her ability; and to help repair tears in her society, to make things a little better through the use of whatever ability she has.” Just this week, the Texas Tribune reported that: « the growing socioeconomic gap between the rich and poor in Dallas County found that

African-American and Hispanic residents continue to bear the brunt of falling incomes, and all 11 of the county's poorest census tracts are majority-minority neighborhoods. » My vision for Dallas County Court at Law #4 is to create a specialized program, « The Responsible Citizen Program, » which will give low-income individuals a voice and help to navigate eviction appeals and debtor-creditor issues. The civil justice system status quo is not user-friendly to non-lawyers and low-income litigants. And I am fighting in this runoff election to make sure that we can expand the access to justice to all and not just the select few. Please inform your family and friends that, even if they did not vote in the primary election, they can and MUST vote in the runoff.

Mental Illness Que’s Corner

By Adrain Moffett N a tional Alliance of Mental Illness defines mental illness as Adrain a condiMoffett tion that impacts a person’s thinking, feelings, or mood and may affect his or her ability to relate to others and function on a daily basis. People with the same diagnoses will have different experiences, according to (National Alliance of Mental Illness). As a Crisis Intervention instructor my personal experiences, family and profession has allowed me to educate and share with others not only in the black community but throughout my profession. According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, African Americans are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population. Common mental health disorders among African Americans include: Major Depression, Attention Deficit (ADHD), Suicide and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I recall as young child watching my father suffer from schizophrenia. The time he served in the military and his

hard work and dedication to provide for his family was his life. It was devastating watching my dad going in an out mental hospital for treatment. My mom being a caregiver to my father had many obstacles to overcome to make ends meet so we had a roof over our heads. My grandparents, Uncles and Aunts were there to help us through the difficult times. Even though my mom never graduated high school she did not let that it stop her from educating herself as well as us about our father’s condition. I think the black community suffers in silence, partially because of what we have endured over generations. “Let’s be real” the reality; if you are black and suffering mental illness you have two strikes against you. The stressors due to racism, prejudice, and economic disparities is stifling the growth. When you look at the impact in our black community for decades we have struggled with reaching out to others for help with issues. As a community we have to provide avenues, and resources to help those who are suffering in silence. Your questions comments are certainly appreciative, so please reach out tome at adrain.moffett@yahoo.com or oggques.org

RE-ELECT JUDGE MARTIN HOFFMAN IN THE MAY RUNOFF Solid Experience and Track Record in the Community Matter Vote Early May 14-18; Election Day May 22 You would be hard pressed to find a Judge in Dallas County who has worked harder in the community to go above and beyond regular job duties than Judge Martin Hoffman. He was a leader of the “Class of 2006” Democratic who swept Dallas County for Democrats for the first time in decades. Since then, he has earned a solid reputation

on the bench and he has mentored dozens of young people who are interested in legal careers. Judge Hoffman has been active in local high schools as a speaker and mock trial judge. He has served on dozens of committees and projects with various legal associations. He has one of the strongest internship programs among our judges, allowing students in the local community to directly observe and learn about our courts and gain insight into what it is like to be an attorney or judge. For all of this work, he has received numerous awards, including the 2017 Dallas Woman Lawyers Outstanding Jurist Award, and the 2016 JL Turner Legal Association Hon. Cleo Steele Committed Mentor Award. He has also earned the endorsements of Democratic leaders who are around the system daily and know who is doing a good job, including Senator Royce West, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, Commissioner Elba Garcia and others. It is incumbent on us, the voters, to research our judicial candidates. Did you know that literally hundreds of thousands

ELITE NEWS APRIL 20, 2018 13

of people go through our justice system in Dallas County each year? For instance, it is said that Love Field is the only public building in Dallas that has more daily foot traffic than Crowley Courthouse. Our judges have a huge impact on the community in terms of lives, decisions and efficient use of taxpayer dollars. This is why experience, fairness and track record matter so much. In the race for the 68th Civil District Court, Judge Hoffman clearly has earned re-election, and his experience and track record are incomparable. Here is a look at his qualifications versus his opponent’s… JUDGE HOFFMAN has handled more than 300 civil jury trials. His opponent has handled only one civil case in the last decade. JUDGE HOFFMAN is Board Certified in Civil Law. His opponent is not board certified.

JUDGE HOFFMAN is endorsed as qualified by the Dallas Committee for a Quali-

fied Judiciary. His opponent was not endorsed.

VOTE JUDGE KEN TAPSCOTT IN THE MAY RUNOFF We Can’t Let Angry Lawyers Take Out a Good, Honest Judge Over One Ruling Vote Early May 14-18; Election Day May 22 In judicial races, there is often more than meets the eye. Voters have a hard time researching every candidate. When you walk into the voting booth, you may have dozens of judicial candidates to choose from. It has never been more important to know the facts before you vote. This is especially true of the upcoming Democratic Primary Runoff Election May 22. Judge Ken Tapscott is the 2017 Democratic Elected Official of the Year. He has been in office for 12 years, and he has exemplary ratings in the Dallas Bar Association judicial evaluation polls, with over 90% of lawyers approving of his work. He has also put more trials to a jury than any other civil judge in Dallas County over the last decade. Why is Judge Tapscott even facing a challenge you ask? Because he followed the law and angered a handful of powerful attorneys who lost a case in his court. Instead of being satisfied with a fair, just ruling, they decided to recruit and support a challenger to take out Judge

Tapscott in the Democratic Primary. One of the attorneys involved even hired this challenger, Paula Rosales, to work at his firm in the meantime, and they have poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into her campaign.

opponent’s.

Here are the real facts. Judge Tapscott presided over a medical malpractice suit. A paid expert witness was brought into the trial by the plaintiffs. But this expert witness had no prior experience with the medical technology in question, called a virtual colonoscopy. The defense asked that this witness not be allowed to testify because he lacked expertise. Because he had to follow the law, Judge Tapscott upheld the motion and removed the witness. The plaintiffs lost their case in Judge Tapscott's court, and again on appeal. Clearly, Judge Tapscott did what was the right, if difficult decision.

JUDGE TAPSCOTT has 21 years of civil law experience. His opponent has six months.

“What concerns me most is the example this sets,” said Judge Tapscott. “If lawyers don’t believe in the process at the trial level, if they just want their way at any cost, then the fairness and objectivity of the system is under attack. Do you want to walk into a courtroom where the judge is fair and unbiased, or do you want a courtroom that is owned by lawyers with their own agendas, bullying judges? I find this upsetting. Many of my colleagues do as well. We have a process. We have a court of appeals. We have a system in place when people disagree with a ruling. If we let angry lawyers use the ballot box to take out good judges, our system is in jeopardy and the independence of every judge is at stake.” Here’s a quick rundown of Judge Tapscott’s experience versus his

JUDGE TAPSCOTT has tried more than 420 civil jury trials. His opponent has tried zero.

JUDGE TAPSCOTT is endorsed as qualified by the Dallas Committee for a Qualified Judiciary. His opponent was not endorsed. JUDGE TAPSCOTT has been rated as excellent or acceptable by 90% of lawyers in the Dallas Bar Association Judicial Evaluation Poll. His opponent has never been reviewed. JUDGE TAPSCOTT was named the 2017 Elected Official of the Year by the Democratic Party. His opponent has no service history with the party. JUDGE TAPSCOTT is endorsed by Progressive Voters League, Stonewall Democrats of Dallas, Dallas Black Criminal Bar Association, Mexican American Democrats, Mexican American Bar Association, Lake Highlands White Rock Democrats, Preston Hollow Democrats, Metrocrest Democrats, North Texas Asian Democrats, Far North Dallas Richardson Democrats, AFL-CIO Dallas, and Teamsters. His opponent received one endorsement.

This bench does not belong to me | It belongs to the people

This past Wednesday night, I had the pleasure of attending Friendship West Baptist Church and hearing a great Word, through the voice of Rev. Jeffrey A. Johnson. Pastor Johnson is the Sr. Pastor of Eastern Star Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana and he was here to celebrate Pastor Haynes’ 35th pastoral anniversary. In any case Pastor Johnson preached out of 2 Kings Chapter 5, where Naaman, the great leader/commander of the army of King Aram, had leprosy, went to Samaria to be cured. Naaman was told, by Elisha, to dip 7 times in the Jordan and he would be healed. Of course Naaman refused, but ultimately did it and was cured. He refused to dip because he thought he was better than dipping himself in the nasty waters of the Jordan. I’d like to refer to it as he was afraid of what might be in the waters and

that the water would make him worse. Had Naaman not dipped 7 times, he might have missed his James Durham blessing. We as a people are often just like Naaman. We ask God for a lot, but when he brings those blessings to us in uncommon ways, we deflect, and say that’s not God. We make all kinds of excuses to just execute what God has presented with us, because we think we know how God is going to bless us. If we would just humble ourselves and quit being scared to bless, we would receive ALL of the blessing we’ve asked God for and not just a sample of that blessing. I thank God for that word that I personally received from Pastor Johnson. Be Blessed

Dallas Love Field Airport and TSA to Provide Behind-the-Scenes Look at Upgraded Automated Baggage Screening System

Transportation Security Administration (TSA), in partnership with Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL), has upgraded the automated baggage screening system to increase speed and efficiency, while reducing the risk of injury for TSA Transportation Security Officers (TSOs). The new Mobile Inspection Tables (MIT) system makes baggage screening more efficient by creating additional queuing time to

prevent backups. The upgrades also include better tools to track bags and give TSOs the ability to perform more targeted searches when a bag alarms. Bags that do not alarm the system are automatically screened without the need for a TSO to touch them. In addition, bags that require additional screening are delivered automatically to TSO work stations, eliminating the need for them to push, pull or lift heavy bags, which
