Councilman Felder
It is been quite a week for Dallas city councilman Kevin Felder and the City of Dallas the last week with the Reliant Energy announcement at Martin Luther King Center where his field office put together a press conference speaking to the constituents of the Buckner Terrace area about crime and the latest crime wave that’s
over there and he looks too deeply address it with police and City resources. The press conference was packed with those who live in that District. City police officers and Code Enforcement Officers were there as well to speak and to answer questions as the voice of that community. Later Councilman Felder opened homes in Jubilee Park where they’re having new additions built. New residence is put over there to help develop areas in his district I must admit and you must give credit to Dallas city councilman Kevin Felder for his diligent work in his district and in the city o f Dallas and with that being said kudos to you councilman Felder.

Her album Girl Disrupted debuted at number 1 on iTunes R&B Charts and has yielded a Top 10 single on the Billboard’s Urban A/C Charts. In addition to making her mark as a solo artist, Sevyn is a credited writer for seven songs on Chris Brown’s Grammy-winning album, Fame, and cowrote two songs on Alicia Keys’ Grammy-winning album Girl on Fire. Closing out the first Saturday at 8:30 p.m. is legendary Funk band Morris Day & the Time. Led by singer-songwriter Morris Day, the band members are known for having been close Prince associates and are arguably the most successful artists who have worked with him, achieving particular popularity with R&B fans with tracks such as “Jerk Out” and “Jungle Love”. turing a mix of soul music and dance music with funk, rock ‘n’ roll, and more. Resurrection - A Journey Tribute continues the stage’s “Flashback Friday” lineup on Friday, October 5 at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Bringing the sound, look, and authenticity of Journey, the group re-creates the experience of a Journey concert from the band’s most prolific period. Taking the stage on Saturday, October 6 at 8:30 p.m. is country music star Aaron Watson. With eighteen years, over a dozen recorded albums, and more than 2,500 shows in the U.S. and Europe under his belt, the Texas native is no stranger to the spotlight. Multitalented artist and powerful hip hop icon, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges takes the stage on Saturday, October 13 at 8:30 p.m. Ludacris’ broad portfolio of music offers an unrivaled match of lyrical acumen, imagery, and infectious tunes that have earned him three Grammy awards and 17 nominations. In addition to his heavily awarded music career, Ludacris is an esteemed actor, having appeared in the acclaimed indie drama Hustle & Flow and widely-known movie series The Fast and the Furious. The concert series continues Sunday, October 14 at 8:30 p.m. with country singer-songwriter Hunter Hayes. After being nominated for a handful of Grammy awards, winning a collection of Country Music Awards, and touring the world behind a pair of critically acclaimed albums, Hayes went through a period of musical rebirth. As a category-defying artist and musical innovator, he entertains fans with a mix of his newest sounds and the songs that jumpstarted his claim to fame. The final act in the “Flashback Friday” series and the first of Closing weekend, Bidi Bidi Banda will offer a tribute to the late Tejano popstar, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, on Friday, October 19. With performances at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., the group is Austin’s first all-star Selena Tribute and comprised of members from some of Aus-
tin’s premier Latin bands. Bidi Bidi Banda’s interpretation of Selena’s greatest hits will leave you belting lyrics, doing the washing machine, and reliving the greatness of the Queen of Tejano’s Music. Casting Crowns delivers a passionate performance on Saturday, October 20 at 8:30 p.m. The renowned band has held the position as Billboard’s top-selling act in Christian music since 2007, selling more than 10 million albums including their Grammy-winning album, Lifesong. Casting Crowns has also been honored with four American Music Awards, 18 GMA Dove Awards, and two Billboard Music Awards. All seven band members have remained active in student ministry, with their lead singer Mark Hall serving as the student pastor of his local church in Atlanta. The 2018 concert series concludes on Sunday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. with musical entertainment by Mexican Latin group Banda Carnaval. The Grammy-nominated banda is comprised of musicians from Mazatlán Sinaloa and was named after “El Carnaval de Mazatlán,” which is the biggest event that takes place every year in their hometown of Mazatlán. Formed in 2001, the group has become one of the most important bands in Mexico and the American Union. The Chevrolet Main Stage is an outdoor venue with a huge, festival-type stage and experience, as well as an ADA-compliant area for guests needing special assistance. A Trumpet Tribute to All Fathers
“This Is My Dad”
By Dr. J. Ester Davis My third promotion in corporate America put me in national accounts Business Systems Division. By 2:00 PM on a Friday afternoon in an eastern city my colleagues and I knew we were in trouble. We were going to have to work another weekend away from home. We worked all day Saturday. Sunday morning I found a church in the area. Out of habit I signed the visitor’s card and placed Conroe as my “hometown”. The church recommended by a black employee at the hotel was quite historic, reminisce of Philadelphia’s classic architectural deco. Standing as a visitor, and after the announcer finished with her welcome, the Pastor asked for the visitor from Conroe to stand. I stood quietly. The pastor started this story and asked me to come down front. I remember an usher coming with outstretched hand and I followed her. The Pastor in his slow deliberate drawl was explaining his days at Conroe College. Now, I am totally comfortable. He went on with his story of needing money, being away from home, and he went to work for “this black man and his brothers hauling wood.” His voice changed when he said . . . “and they owned the trucks”. Finally after his story of his days at Conroe College, he asked if I would like to say something. At this moment, I was only thinking about my Dad and hearing his voice in my head telling us he knew ministers all over America. As a Baptist girl, I knew proper protocol. “That was my Dad” I said directly after my opening greeting. Conroe, Texas, is home to two(2)black colleges, built years after the Civil War. Conroe
Normal & Industrial College, 1903, located on 10th Street down the street from my Uncle WS’ house and Royal College, 1927, up the hill from my grandparents farm on Royal College Hill. I passed this college all of my formative years going to and from ‘Big Mama’ house. Royal College was nestled in the middle of small black farms and ranches outside of Conroe. In 1913, Conroe College had a five story building destroyed by fire. As you can imagine so much was speculated about this fire and this era of progress. My Dad, Deacon James Saddler, born in 1914, (six brothers, five sisters) owned pulp wood trucks and truck parts all of my life. Daddy gave us on-thejob-training. I wrote my first receipt at 12 years old. My parents were married 55 years before my Mother changed addresses. Daddy was a good provider and my Mom good at everything else. My childhood was filled with lots of rules, space, love and attention, a brother, two sisters, cousins in the area, cats, dogs, baby chicks every Spring and a playhouse in the backyard. We never moved from the house my grandfather built when I was three years old. My Dad loved Texas because he said it was rich with timber. He cleared a lot of “Texas Timber” around what is now ‘The Woodlands’ east and west across Texas. He also had access to lots of eager labor with two colleges full of young black ministers. To this day with all of the stories about those days, I marvel at the courage, grit and faith of my Dad. Years before Daddy changed addresses, we celebrated “James Saddler Day” with proclamations and visitors from several counties. I was grown before I learned of the “steadfast prayer group” that prayed for him to come home every night. Let’s celebrate Fathers and write about the precious memories.

Texas, Birthplace of LULAC Votes to Go Adelante con Domingo!
Dear Friends,
Gracias Tejanos for voting to endorse Adelante con Domingo! As a fellow Tejano, your trust and confianza in our campaign for the future of LULAC means a great deal to me. We are walking together in the footsteps of our LULAC Brothers and Sisters before us who during 89 years have been fighting for justicia in our communities. In those dark days when signs read: “No dogs or Mexicans allowed”, it was LULAC that tore them down and shouted Basta! When our Tejano boys and girls were being turned away at school doors, it was LULAC that pounded on those doors and demanded, “Let our children in!” And when a poll tax denied our poor Tejano families their right to vote, it was LULAC that defied power and destroyed that barrier forever! This is what Tejanos in LULAC have done. You have changed history and I salute you. Now we must march on. My father taught me, “Dime con quien andas y te digo quien eres.” Tell me who you are with and I’ll tell you who you are. I am with YOU - the College Students who are already young leaders, the brave Veterans I am proud to call my friends, the dedicated teachers shining bright the light of knowledge, my beloved LGBTQ community which we embrace and respect and of course, our LULAC Elders who have fought the hard battles before us and to whom many victories are owed. Los quiero mucho a todos. To all mis Tejanos, I give you my solemn word como Tejano que soy --- yo no me rajo. I will work day and night with God’s help and your support to make LULAC stronger, better and place our organization at the forefront in the fight for civil rights for all Americans. We will make every LULAC member proud to be part of this team and what we stand for in unity. Ahora si… with a Texas-size vote and momentum we move on and forward. I say to you from my heart ---- Join us for the Good of the League. ¡Hasta la Victoria! Domingo Garcia Candidate for LULAC National President

Cora Dixon, LMT The Benefits of Pre –Natal Massage Pre –Natal Massage is specialized massage therapy for expectant mothers. Pre-Natal massage has many benefits for the mother and child during all three trimesters of pregnancy. Frequent or regular Pre-natal massage sessions improve the mother’s immunity, and eases the periodic
pain and stress of daily life during pregnancy. Pre-Natal massage naturally increases blood circulation. It assists the expectant mother and child in absorbing adequate amounts of oxygen and nutrients. These nutrients help the mother clean toxins from her body, thus keeping colds and infections at bay. These nutrients also help cleanse toxins from the developing body of the child. Many pregnant mothers live busy lives. Pre-Natal massage helps to lessen the built up stress for many such women. Lower back pain, upper back pain, leg cramps, fatigue, shortness of breath, joint pain and constipation are some of the issues com-
fortably remedied with professional, relaxing massage sessions of 30, 60, or 90 minutes. Stress- relieving Pre-Natal massage calms the mother’s nervous system and prepares her for an easier delivery. Pre-natal Massage helps to improve and stabilize the bodily functions of expectant mothers. Frequent pre-natal massages can help to improve posture. It also aids with the expectant mother’s constantly changing bone and muscular structure, which is often stressed with increasing baby weight. Therapeutic massages can help stabilize blood pressure and ease stress on the mother’s heart . Hormonal levels in the mother’s body are also stabilized naturally while improving the mother’s fluctuating moods.

Pre-natal massages are quite special for future mothers because they improve overall well being during all three trimesters. Pre-natal massage can be quite a comforting and nurturing experience for both mother and child. THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD. Pride, Values, Heritage, and Patriotism
From Where I Sit by Sandra Crenshaw
I was awakened the Saturday after Memorial Day, by one of her “ kids”, 50 year old, Michael Gipson . “Have you seen the Morning News” he asked. He was LIVID, having a Kanipshion fit. The City didn’t take care of the roof at the Juanita Craft Heritage House and the ceiling has caved in. Former Park Board members called “why didn’t Marilyn Clark , (ie CITY of DALLAS Cultural Affairs) see the water marks in the ceiling BEFORE it got to this? Juanita Jewell Craft is a nationally known NAACP Civil Rights Activist who worked with then NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall and local black bar members to kick the doors open for Blacks to vote in the Texas Democratic Party Primary. Locally, she organized students to picket KKK member Robert Lee Thornton and State Fair of Texas founder to allow blacks to attend the State Fair more than one day. As an elder, she was endorsed by the Dallas Citizens Council and won election to the Dallas City Council. Before her death, a recreation center was named after Craft. She wrote in her autobiography, that the ribbon cutting attended by the City’s dignitaries was like a preview of her eulogy, but at death she wanted it added, “She gave em Hell.” She like many black females in politics was motherless, so she claimed members of the NAACP Youth council as her “kids.” In return for her community service, Ms. Craft requested her home that served as an unofficial office for the NAACP Youth Council be restored at the Old City Park. The proposal was rejected because the historians were focusing on the founders of the City during the late
1800s. As a compromise, the City dedicated the edifice as a historic site, agreed to maintain the grounds and the Cultural Affairs coordinates tours. Later that morning there was a brouhaha as Craft “kids” gathered to follow up on the news report but the real eye sore and neglect was across the street from this historical site where tourists around the world visit. The code enforcement officer on site said the burned out house belonged to another Craft “kid”-- Al Green. Yes, THE Rev. Al Green, the wanna be King Maker, who reminded this Democratic Party elder that he was NOT MY “delivery boy” , after he intercepted campaign finance reports and refused to forward the documents to several Democratic judicial candidates, he worked for. The neighbors said Green comes every day to pick up the mail. This is the house where Green was raised by his “Big Mama” the late Annie Mae Robertson, a Golden Gate Baptist Church elder. She and Juanita were personal friends and Alvin traveled with Craft to the NAACP Conventions. Green now lives in one of the Northern suburbs with his wife, a real estate investor . Doors were opened to Green when he invoked his association with Juanita Craft, a name known to the old guard business community. Before Green was 21 and without college degree, he had landscaping contracts with the City of Dallas and DART. The code officer said that Green plead that he could not afford to keep the grounds maintained. Green parlayed almost $75,000 from candidates as a political consultant and reports his church address as his business address on the candidates finance reports. It is not confirmed but GOP insiders say that Green is courting Republican DA Faith Johnson for contracts. What is confirmed is that Green hosted Johnson on his radio show. Michael Gipson’s dark skin gloats with pride when he recalls how Mrs. CRAFT
recruited him as the youngest plaintiff in a police brutality civil rights lawsuit in the late 80’s. Gipson lives blocks away in the historic South Blvd Park Row and he like Green is a professional landscaper. Earlier last month, Claudia Fowler, self proclaimed Queen Joppa, called the news media to complain the CITY does not take care of Honey Springs Cemetery where allegedly descendants of Joppee freedman and her family members are buried. Historian Donald Payton inventoried the cemetery in 1999 and the City took possession, built a beautiful memorial with fencing around this historic cemetery in 2002 and keeps the grounds maintained to date. DCAD reports show that Fowler's homestead where she parks her black Mercedes Benz and that she inherited from Joppee founders was recently sold at the Sheriff 's auction for back taxes and City code violation fines. I am reminded of sitting at City Hall where the Mayor introduced a resolution sponsored by State Representative Helen Giddings to remove the Robert Lee memorial and rename Lee Parkway. The property owners on Lee Parkway were aghast. They appealed to Governor Abbott to question why “THEIR” State rep could advocate changing their street address without their knowledge or consent. The elderly white ladies were notified that Giddings was in fact was receiving tax exemption while homesteading at her half a million dollar condo on Lee Parkway but was she registered to vote in De Soto where she represented her hometown in the Legislature. Giddings, who did not seek re-election in Desoto, endorsed former Desoto Mayor and now House Rep- elect Carl Sherman. Sherman was taunted throughout his bitterly fought election bid that if elected he would be the mouth piece for Giddings. DCAD records now list Lee Parkway as Giddings sole residential address. It is reported that Giddings is considering running for Dallas Mayor. If successful, she would follow the steps of her mentor, the former Houston house representative, Sylvester Turner, now Mayor of Dallas.
11
Just the week prior, the Sons of Confederate and other sons of Dallas European founding fathers gathered across from People’s Baptist Church on Pine Street to clean the Confederate Pauper’s Cemetery. The neighbors told me when the Mayor Task Force wanted to remove the Confederate Sign off the cemetery that the city did not have to clean this cemetery because these “white guys” came three or four times a year to maintain it. So this Memorial Day, all of the able bodied men and women in this black neighborhood met with the Sons of Confederate Veterans President to thank them for keeping the grounds from being an eyesore in their neighborhood. They placed American Flags on all of the grave markers including the sole African American grave with a marker, George Cooper, a black confederate. We looked for his family and found he had none, so we felt he should no less be honored on Veterans Day. Eric Johnson, South Dallas House Representative is running for Texas Speaker of the House. I asked the Capitol to post a picture of the Blacks who built the state Capitol. Johnson wants to take down a Confederate plaque from the Capitol Walls and thinks that Republican house members are going to vote for him for Speaker???? What happened to black family tradition and pride where families would choose a date once a year whether it was Juneteenth, Mother’s Day or Memorial Day to go to the country and clean their family’s gravesites. I have warned that the Trump supporters are tired of blacks playing the victims and throwing their political weight around. They are tired of being called racists and made to feel guilty when black politicians and football players live in Million dollar homes, have their own businesses, lie about their voter registrations and then want to tear down white folk’s historical markers and then want White people ( the City) to take
care of theirs.

Slim Down Tips for a Healthier Summer
Courtesy: (StatePoint) Summer means BBQs, beach time and swimsuits, but it could also mean a change in eating habits and not necessarily for the better. Many people work hard throughout the winter in hopes of losing weight before summer, but when summer arrives, they abandon their healthy lifestyle and risk gaining weight. “A healthy lifestyle is just that -- a lifestyle -- and can definitely be attainable all year long with the right tools,” says Mandi Knowles, dietitian for South Beach Diet. With these simple slim down tips and tricks from Knowles, you can stay on the weight loss track and keep up your healthy routine this summer and beyond. • Eat Before You Go Out: If you’re headed out for a big meal or party, don’t skip breakfast or your mid-morning snack. Eat plenty of nutritious, high-fiber foods all throughout the day. Pretend the day is just like any other,
and you’ll be way less likely to over-indulge. • Have Fruit for Dessert: Delicious fruit is in season, so trade that lemon meringue pie for some fresh cantaloupe or strawberries. Offer to make a fruit salad for potlucks, picnics and barbecues. Don’t forget fruit smoothies. Add fresh spinach or kale to your shake and you’ll fulfill a vegetable serving while satiating your sweet tooth. • Stick to Your Routine: On vacations and weekends it’s easy to spiral away from good habits. To avoid a weight loss setback, try sticking to your weekday routine. Make good choices like eating a nutritious breakfast, getting some exercise and packing healthful snacks to fuel your day. • Watch What You Drink: You don’t have to give up alcohol completely, but you should watch what you drink. Swap wine, beer and margaritas, which can be packed with sugar, for lighter drinks like vodka with sparkling water and a lime. Or ditch the alcohol all together and spice up water with fresh fruit.
• Lighten up Those BBQ Recipes: Pasta and potato salads are staples at many picnics, but they can also pack on excess calories, depending on how they are made. Use whole-grain pasta, olive oil, herbs and lemon juice to make pasta salad. Try sweet potatoes, turnips and Greek yogurt in potato salad. Use lean ground beef for burgers and skip the bun. • Get Moving: Take advantage of the warm weather to get outside and move. Make time to take walks around the neighborhood, go for a swim, hike with friends or even do yoga in the park. You’ll feel better and your body will thank you. More tips and information can be found on South Beach Diet’s blog, The Palm, at palm.southbeachdiet.com. Even if you’re not at your goal weight, don’t let that stop you. By making smart choices this summer, you can live a healthier lifestyle and have the confidence to strut your stuff at the beach, pool and anywhere else the season takes you.

Johnson states support for LGBT Pride Month Dallas, Texas – Congresswoman Johnson, a member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, released the following statement today in honor of LGBT Pride Month. Each June, members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community come together to celebrate their courage, their identities, and their lives: “This June, as we celebrate LGBT Pride Month, let us renew our fight to end discrimination against LGBT individuals,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Pride Month recognizes the courage that it takes for LGBT people to come out as their true selves into a society that is not always accepting. It is an observance of those who have fought for equality, and in some cases losing their freedom or even their lives. And it is a celebration of how far we have all come, for when we are more welcoming to our LGBT friends and family we are a stronger, more resilient, and more unified society.”
Congresswoman Johnson added, “I pledge to keep fighting to ensure that LGBT Americans have the safety and security they deserve in our Dallas community and across the nation. So I am joining countless others in taking this Pride Month to recognize the significant contributions our LGBT friends and family members have made to the fabric of our nation and stand together in the fight for full and total equality.” Congresswoman Johnson has staunchly opposed the Trump Administration’s recent efforts to roll back protections for LGBT individuals. Congresswoman Johnson has been vocally opposed to reinstating the ban on transgendered individuals from serving in the military, which President Trump instituted in March 2018. Congresswoman Johnson also stood firmly against the October 2017 U.S. Department of Justice guidance that would allow all administrative agencies and executive departments to discriminate against transgender workers, which has opened up the door for government agencies, private businesses, and other entities to discriminate against members of the LGBT community.

WILLIAMS DRAFTED IN 26TH ROUND BY ANGELS; PVAMU HS SIGNEE ALSO DRAFTED
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Prairie View A&M baseball program had two players selected on day three of the Major League Baseball draft.
Senior pitcher Darrien Williams (6-3, 205; Bryan, Texas) was selected in the 26th round by the Angels of the American League’s Western Division. In the 29th round, high school signee Jaylen Smith (5-11, 170; Copperas Cove, Texas) was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies. “When I arrived in the fall of 2015, I knew I had something special,” said Panthers’ head baseball coach Auntwan Riggins
of Williams. “D-Will pitched and had played right field for us, and led the team in hitting. I knew pitching was always his best opportunity to play at the next level. He understood that, and worked hard to make his dream come true.” Williams is the first PVAMU baseball player since 2009 to be selected in the draft. That year, CF Myrio Richard (9th round, Oakland A’s) and C Brandon Whitby (34th round, Colorado Rockies) were selected.
“It’s a dream come true,” Williams said. “I put God first. I appreciate the support of my family,
girlfriend and friends as well as my coaches. This is something I always anticipated.”
Williams was a four-year player for the Panthers, and began his career as both an outfielder before also pitching in year two before solely focusing on the mound during his final two years. “I only pitched at PVAMU for three seasons,” Williams said. “I didn’t really have a starting role as a pitcher in high school, but I knew that I had the will to pitch. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity. I can’t do anything but thank the man above.”
As a hitter, he had a career average of .290 with six home runs and 17 RBI. His best year at the plate came as a sophomore in 2016, where hit .350 in 34 starts with five home runs and 13 RBI.
After one relief appearance as a freshman and 12 starts on the mound as a sophomore, Williams became a full-time pitcher in his final two seasons. He made 40 appearances with 34 starts, winning eight times. He struck out 172 hitters in 205.1 innings. His best statistical year came as a junior in 2017 when he posted a 4-4 record with a 4.41 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 67.1 innings.
This past season, Williams struck out 69 batters in 76 innings with a 2-6 record. “This opportunity for Darrien means the world to me because I know how hard he worked,” said Riggins, who himself played five years of professional baseball in the minor leagues. “He is a great kid with great values. I would like to praise his parents for doing an awesome job in raising this young man.” Smith is a left handed pitcher who also played quarterback at Copperas Cove HS.
PANTHER STUDENT-ATHLETES CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE HIGH MARKS IN CLASSROOM PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas Prairie View A&M University student-athletes continue to achieve high marks in the classroom as evidenced by the latest NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) announced Wednesday. In the 2016-17 report, seven PVAMU teams had perfect scores of 1000: Baseball, Men’s Track & Field, Men’s Cross Country, Men’s Tennis, Softball, Women’s Bowling and Women’s Cross Country. It is the second consecutive year seven Panther athletics teams earned a perfect score. All 18 Prairie View A&M athletics teams are above the NCAA mandated multi-year
score of 930, and all 18 teams are again postseason eligible in the upcoming 2018-19 athletic year. Panther Athletics was also awarded 14 delayed graduation points across multiple sports for the 2016-17 academic cycle. Delayed graduation points are points earned for a student-athlete that lost a point at any time during their matriculation. A total of six teams increased single-year scores from 2015-16 to 2016-17: Baseball, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Cross Country, Men’s
Golf, Women’s Soccer and Softball. “Our student-athletes continue to win academically,” said PVAMU Vice President and
Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson. “Our department motto of ‘All Out All Game All Season’ begins with classroom
success, which lays the foundation for competitive success as well as the foundation for professional success in life. President Dr. Ruth Simmons continues to provide key resources to benefit our student-athletes, as well as our compliance and academic services staffs and support their educational efforts. Our coaches are also to be commended for the vital role they play in stressing classroom achievement as well as competitive achievement. We are proud of their continued accomplishments in the classroom. This is another proud day for everyone in PVNation!”
Associate Athletic Director of Student Athlete Support Services Brittney Johnson echoed Robinson's sentiments. “Academic success at Prairie View A&M University truly is and continues to be a team effort,” Johnson said. “Our administration, student-athletes, coaches and staff continue to work as one to help our APR scores continue to improve on a yearly basis. I commend our compliance and academic advising staff for their diligence in helping our student-athletes to be successful. Most importantly, I applaud our student-athletes for their buyin in trusting the process in achieving academic success.”
