Funding for Mental Health Resources for Veterans

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson Releases Statement Discussing Community Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson released the following statement discussing mental health services and protections for veterans that were reflected in the Fiscal Year 2018 spending legislation signed by President Trump on Friday, March 23, 2018: Last week, Congress passed a funding that bill that increased funding services and care for veterans across the country, including Dallas. The following are a few major policies that Congresswoman Johnson proudly supported and is hopeful that it will positively impact veterans and their families:

· $295 million for Veterans Employment and Training; · $8.4 billion provided for VA mental health services and programs; · $10 million provided for the Veterans Crisis Line; · $22 million provided for the National Centers for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder “The recent spending bill signed into law provides an equal opportunity for mental health screenings and health services for those in our veteran community,” said Congresswoman Johnson. “Prior to serving in Congress, I worked as a registered nurse at the VA hospital in Dallas, so I recognize the critical importance of providing adequate mental

and behavioral health care for veterans. These men and women have endured tremendous stress and have sacrificed so much in the line of duty. Our veterans deserve only the best care that our nation can offer.” If you would like to participate and learn more about the mental health resources available to veterans and their family members, join us for a day-long event highlighting mental health recovery for Veterans and their families on Thursday, March 29, 2018. This collaborative event sponsored by UTD’s Center for Brain Health, Dallas VAMC, Jansen Pharmaceuticals and Metrocare will feature educational opportunities, practical skill-building and information about resources relevant to the needs of Veterans and their families.

GOP’S MOTION TO REMOVE JUDGE IN FRIVOLOUS LAWSUIT DENIED An administrative judge has denied a motion by the Dallas County Republican Party (DCRP) to remove Judge Eric Moyé in the lawsuit that aims to throw numerous Democratic candidates off the 2018 ballot in Dallas County. Judge Stephen Ables, the presiding judge of the Sixth Administrative Judicial Region appointed by Governor Greg Abbott, denied the DCRP’s motion in a hearing this morning, explaining that the DCRP failed to present any evidence requiring Judge Moyé’s recusal. Back in the slick saddle again

By Darryl Blair, Sr.

Well what a difference a new term brings. I was just the other day looking at the news and up appears councilman Dwaine Caraway and he's doing a commercial relative to spaying and neutering your pets. Not only is this on TV but it's also on the radio. He wants you to spay and neuter your pets that's male and female, my church. Bringing you this article today is to encourage the readers and more importantly the constituents and the communities that he serves and the City of Dallas at large that we spay and neuter Dwaine Caraway and Claudia Fowler. They are acting as if they are a pack of crazed wild dogs when it comes to corporate entities moving in our community, how they go and hustle them for charitable donations that never make it back to our community. This situation has happened before with Claudia Fowler receiving funds from the Austin Industries as Channel 5 and Dallas Morning News reported. She got initially $7,000 and then there was after up until 2015. I can assure you that in my estimation and that my guesstimation that out of that $7,000 she could not give answer not even to the company that was giving her the money. It's deplorable that you know you have an individual who uses their position in government to perch up on a rock and swoop down like a buzzard to go and get items for themselves and the community still stays broken and disenfranchised. It's tragic what has happened over in Joppa and what's taking place over in Joppa as it relates to Dwaine Caraway and Claudia Fowler and what they have done to these folks in that Community deserve much better. That is probably one of the more disenfranchised areas of Dallas and yet Kevin Felder is doing all he can to rescue that area and make sure that they're not mistreated. By the way treatment why is Dwaine Caraway over in Kevin Felder district encouraging corporate entities such as Martin Marietta and meeting to

get money from him for a charity that is really non-existent and is not fully sanctioned with the state of Texas and what not? Here we are again but the Same Old Situation. Now I encourage Dwaine Caraway to do what he needs to do to represent himself you know you can take me to court and say that what I said is slanderous. No it's not. This is who you are. You slammed It Yourself by your Dwaine Caraway actions and how you represented our community it's tragic that you are continuously building your bank account or that lack thereof on the backs of hard-working individuals using their plight as a cause to raise money and yet they see none of it. You're the same individClaudia Fowler ual who has been involved with Dallas County schools and how does that work? You are a real estate broker. You’re showing real estate you get a $20,000 loan that you didn't pay off and you didn't pay back by 20 September 2015 and yet you say that they didn't contact you, looks more like that was just a payoff for a vote and yet you know it was failed. Black folks in Dallas at large we need to wake up you need to wake up and become apprised and aware of what's going on with this individual city council. I'm trying to understand why the Mayor Mike Rawlings has not called for an ethics investigation as it relates to Dwaine Caraway. Time and time again he has popped up where some monies have been transferred or

monies have been exchanging hands. He sets everything in motion =and he never knows what happened and then he had the audacity to throw his mama under the bus by saying his momma told him not to talk to y'all as in the Press. Did she also tell you not to run for public office and further put yourself under scrutiny as monies consistently get exchanged and you're at the forefront but you're never know what happens on the backend? I encourage every church with a charity, I encourage every preacher and I encourage all the lawmakers to get this cancer out of the way because it is going to be a blight on our community and on your service as public service individuals who represents the greater good of Dallas and your communities be it black or white. Because you certainly don't want folks to look at you in the same light that they look at Dwaine Caraway. Dwaine what happened to the $20,000 that was sold back to the company that loaned you the money to get your dad's house fixed? Show where the repairs were made, better yet show how you were able to be a consultant for Dallas County Schools and you recommended properties for them to purchase. Dwaine this is not boding well you're not slick as you think although you are slick as oil on plastic. This is not going to work. People are going to continue, the

media is going to stay after you and at some point in time there's going to be an investigation into what you've done and what you're doing and you are so messy that it's going to show tragic. Tragic for our community. Wake up Dallas, it's high time we start putting these folks in the frame and labeling it as it should be Dwaine Caraway is not a representative of the people he's representative of self and he uses individuals like Claudia Fowler to run shotgun up front and then he goes and gets the money when things are taking place. That's my estimation and it doesn't take a genius to see the writing on the wall why would you to try direct monies and charitable donations to a entity and then you don't have the wherewithal? As a public official your name, your trust, your integrity is on the line and you don't follow up to make sure that they are above board and then you turn around again even after they have been discovered to not keep books or be able to account for funds that were received at your encouragement you recommend them yet again for another project and an area that is not yours. That District does not belong to you. That’s something that Kevin Felder needs to broker and he's made himself clear that he didn't want that harmful toxins in his community hurting the people of Joppa. They've been abused and misused long enough. They need to run Claudia Fowler out like a witch on a broom. Get her out of town. This is tragic that our community has been represented by such public eye sores. As you read this article I want you to walk away and have a wonderful day but I want you to be more proactive and not reactive.Let's get these cancerous individuals out of the way. Thank you very much. Continue to read Elite News and Elite news will have you something to read. God bless.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Commit to eating cleaner, or all your hard work is in vain! The healthy lifestyles, killer bodies, and disease-free temples that you desire require your commitment to healthy eating! You can exercise from the time the rooster crows until the cows come home, but if you make a run through your local drivethrough afterward, you just are not going to get anywhere fast. What is clean eating? Glad you asked. Below are some guidelines on how to eat clean. 1. Eat Lots Of Plants – Eat food that is straight from nature. Eating mostly foods that are off a tree, bush, plant or vine are your best option. The idea is to stay away from anything that humans (food corporations) have altered in any way. 2. Enjoy Grains – Stick to whole grains and haven’t been broken down into a “glue-like” substance. Stick to brown rice, whole wheat, and other whole grains. ELITE NEWS 7TH ANNUAL

LaShante Williams 3. Read Labels I don’t know how many breads I’ve picked up at the store that say they are whole grain. But when I take a look at the ingredient list, white flour is the second ingredient after whole wheat flour! 4. Eat Fewer Ingredients. Try not to purchase foods that have more than 3-6 elements in the ingredient list as a general rule (although there are always exceptions). And be sure you recognize every ingredient. If it’s anything other than honest-to-goodness herbs and spices, avoid it. And remember, if you can’t pronounce it, it probably shouldn’t go into your body (yes, there are exceptions here too). 5. Eat 5-6 small meals per day. This may seem like a lot at first. But remember, you are eating smaller portions. If you have a hard time with this, prepare your regular three meals and a snack for the day, and divide lunch and dinner in half. You’ve instantly got six small meals!

February 14, 2018 was national signing day, and my son Ken’Charrion Wade signed for a football scholarship to Southwestern College which is located in Kansas. Words can’t express how proud I am of this young man. He is one of the most mannerable, respectful and humble kids I’ve ever come across and I’m so happy to be able to call him my son. He has overcome so many different obstacles and adversity throughout his life. Now it’s time to keep grinding and stay focused and show them that didn’t believe in you that you got what it takes.

I love you son, more than words can say. Keep aiming high and trusting in the Lord and you will do great during the next chapter in your life.

in the bottom of the eighth on five hits. Tyler Gordon singled up the middle advancing to third on a wild pitch. A Jayln Baker sacrifice fly allowed Gordon to score. Daniel Lingua singled up the middle advancing to third, after an Ezekiel Bear double to right field. Brashad Jones singled to left field and both Lingua and Bear scored giving the Panthers a 5-4 lead going into the final inning. Southern scored two runs on

a pair off of two hits in their half of the ninth inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Panthers responded again in their half of the frame, as Avery Williams reached base on a fielding error advancing to second. Gordon grounded out on a sacrifice bunt advancing Williams to third. Two at bats later Baker singled to center field, bringing Williams across home plate. In the next at bat Lingua was hit by a pitch putting two

runners in scoring position for PVAMU. The Jaguar pitcher threw a wild pitch that looked indecisive for Baker, but he took advantage of the play advancing to third and after a throwing error by the Jaguar catcher, as Baker scored the winning run for the Panthers. The Panthers return to action on Wednesday to take on Jarvis Christian with the first pitch set for 4 p.m. at Tankersley Field.

Rev. Dr. Frederick D Haynes, III - The People’s Pastor By Debra Peek-Haynes

Rev. Dr. Frederick D Haynes, III

More than 32 years ago, I met a handsome, intelligent, articulate and fun-loving young man. Our initial conversations and dates did not uncover the depth of the man that would soon become my husband. However, the more conversations we had and the more time we spent together, I soon discovered this man, Rev. Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, is wrapped in a God-given potential that some often don’t fully recognize. Although Freddy is known for his brilliant messages, always delivered by memory and his mastery of the English language, he is one of the kindest persons I have ever met. He has a genuine concern for the plight of people that have been overlooked, underrepresented, and mistreated.

speaking truth to power. He is also a champion for our children and youth, men and women of color who are often unjustly incarcerated at a disproportionate rate, and women in ministry who are often overlooked. Children love his animated sermons. Freddy has a unique quality that only babies can articulate. During his many travels, he has encountered countless crying babies before or during a flight. On many occasions when the mothers could not stop their child from crying, they have asked him to hold the child. Each time the baby will cease from crying. On most flights he is exhausted, but each time as requested, he has held the child

until the child is asleep. In addition, l have witnessed toddlers who he does not know personally, holding their arms open for him to hold them. Children have an innocent intuition about his kind heartedness. This is a quality that only God can give. By the way, this was also a great help while raising our precious daughter, Abeni. As Freddy seeks to help emancipate the disinherited and mistreated, he always seeks the guidance of our savior, Jesus the

Christ. He takes his prayer life seriously and studies daily. He is an avid reader, always seeking knowledge and understanding. Never have I known him to be narrow-minded. He is spiritual and cosmopolitan. Always knowing how to blend that two so he can relate to this present age and generation. Many young ministers have benefited from Freddy’s ministry. He has built a platform that has launched numerous pastors and church and community

leaders. Often, I share with his mentees that Freddy is one of the most gracious pastors. He is generous with his compliments and accolades. I pray that more ministers and pastors, will learn from his example. Offering kind words and affirmations to others does not take anything away from him but it makes him that much taller. In my opinion, more pastors, ministers, and organizational leaders should follow his exam-

Say No to Split Ends

By Lauren Love

You're getting dressed, and you begin to pull your panty hose up and your pink rose stiletto nail creates a hole. OH NO! The more you pull the hole getting larger, now a run appears, you know the story, the run is spreading and, it won't stop! Same with split ends, if not removed from the end of your hair strands, the split ends just keeps going up the hair strand looking to kill and destroy your hair! Say no to split ends- says color specialist Lauren Love. Split ends appear when the ends of your hair is brittle and/or dry. YOU NEED TO CUT IT!!! ✂ Healthy Hair Specialist, Dominique Dai, CEO of Mane Affair Studio, takes her client through a healthy way of living by just a small snip ✂! Often we are discouraged and frightened we may lose our length,

13

but shouldn't we be more concerned with our hair strength? I agree with Dominique-“healthy hair is the best foundation to any hairstyle.” Says color specialist Lauren Love. Being a color specialist, I can create the best color formula with amazing hair color but if the hair strands are frayed ends and shabby strands, the hair color will look dead! Pro Tip: A great Stylist will make the best decision for your hair. Focus on the strength of your hair and not the length. Be aware of what is best for you not what feels good to you. Getting a trim is not the only way to remove split ends in some (and I mean some) cases you MAY (a strong "may") be able to repair them but getting them trimmed routinely, is the best way to obtain the length and health of your hair you always wanted!!!!

Is My Child Depressed? By Demetrice Smith

Depression Signs Not Adequately Addressed in Children Can Lead to Adult Depression It is normal for children and youth to experience various types of emotional distress as they develop and mature. For example, it is common for children to experience anxiety about school, or youth to experience short periods of depression that are transient in nature. When symptoms persist over weeks, it may be time to seek professional assistance. While most youth are healthy, physically and emotionally, one in every four to five youth in the general population meet criteria for a lifetime mental disorder and as a result may face discrimination and negative attitudes. And Justice For All.

And Justice For All - A Column by Judge Brandon Birmingham, Presiding over the 292nd Judicial District Court, and Presiding Judge of the Felony District Courts in Dallas County. Join him on his Facebook Page – Judge Brandon Birmingham - Every Friday LIVE at FIVE for “Fridays in Chambers,” a weekly video summary of what’s happening in the criminal justice system.

How’d They Catch Mark Conditt, the Austin Bomber?

After nearly three weeks of terror, law enforcement personnel tracked down the man responsible for the senseless killings of Draylen Mason and Anthony Stephan House in Austin. 4 others were injured by his bombs. Before the bomber could be taken into custody, he committed suicide by blowing himself up inside his car surrounded by a cavalcade of law enforcement. Officers recovered his cell phone containing what’s been described as a 25 minute confession, the contents of which have not been disclosed. Authorities also revealed they discovered a list of additional future targets. Those potential targets might have become a reality if the Bomber parked in a different spot at Fed Ex a few days earlier. I was always fascinated and humbled by the diligent and methodical efforts of investigators in gathering clues in order to solve crimes. I worked for years as the Chief of the Cold Case Unit at the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, and got to partner with some of the best crime-fighting minds around. The work is difficult, monotonous, and sometimes futile. But these diligent officers capitalize on a suspect’s slightest mistake

Judge Brandon Birmingham

masterfully. Such was the case in Austin. Authorities were able to piece together a license plate from the Fed Ex shop the Bomber mailed one of his deadly packages. The video also showed he was wearing distinctive pink gloves officers determined were sold by Home Depot. They then watched hours of surveillance video from Austin-area Home Depot Stores, eventually pinpointing when the bomber obtained those gloves. That transactional information also allowed them to obtain a search warrant for his google search history. That history revealed searches officers consider “suspicious.” They were also able to develop cell phone information that eventually lead to locating the suspect and his final standoff. Law enforcement surrounded him in droves that night - both in show of personal force and in show of the force of undeniable proof borne from diligence and dogged preparation. I’ll keep you updated as the investigation continues into the bomber’s motives and into whether anyone else is criminally responsible for these bombings as an accomplice.
