FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

FROM THE EDITOR

Dear travellers,

As Summer intensifies and we head into our busiest period, Air Malta welcomes to the fleet our 6th Airbus A320neo. This delivery under Maltese registration 9H – NEF is another step in our fleet renewal project which was initiated in 2019 and is planned for completion by August 2024.

This Summer the airline is set to carry an estimated 1.33 million passengers during the season, as our fleet of eight aircraft continues to operate an average of 157 weekly flights to 23 destinations.

I am delighted to announce that our Winter 2023/24 schedule has now been launche d and is on sale! This will offer our customers up to 111 weekly flights for travel to 17 cities across our network, generating nearly 850,000 seats, and an increase of 29% over the prior year.

Aside from our passenger services, Air Malta is very pleased to be working closely with local Maltese businesses and manufacturing companies in the export of Malta manufactured goods to other EU countries, Mexico, USA, and Nigeria, in conjunction with our worldwide airline network partners.

Air Malta also continues to be involved within the community, actively supporting worthwhile causes, and building sociallyresponsible partnershi ps. We are honoured to have recently supported a fundraising initiative spearheaded by Malta Enterprise for the Richmond Foundation, bringing to Malta for a recital two internationally acclaimed Maltese musicians. Air Malta also carried the Urban Fabric Project team who are behind the Malta installation at the London Design Biennale at the cour tyard of Somerset House. In addition, we announced that we have been named the official Travel Partner for Europride Malta 2023 being held in September 2023.

For your next trip with us this Summer, why not elevate your travel experience and upgrade your flight? Upgrades to Business Class can be made up to 24 hours prior to your departure by going to the newly launched Air Malta shop, a portal to book any extra requirements for your travels. Many extras, including extra baggage, sports equipment, in-flight meals, cabin upgrades and Go-First are available on any of our flights and can be accessed by logging onto our website www.shop.airmalta.com

For more information about Ai r Malta and our flight schedules please visit www.airmalta.com and www.facebook.com/AirMalta and join our newsletter mailing list to receive offers directly in your inbox. We regularly introduce exciting promotional offers and you need to be registered to our newsletter to be able to get notice of our promotions.

I hope you have a great flight!

Thank you for choosing Air Malta. We look forward to seeing you aboard on another one of our flights soon.

While many of you will be taking time off work to go on holiday, others are travelling to work or for work. Whatever your journey, our team has worked to get this 127th edition of Il-Bizzilla ready to inform and entertain you on the way.

Putting together a magazine can be likened to a ‘plane ride’: the ‘flatplan’ is our seating plan where we aim to balance the content, ads and information in such a way that it all sits comfortably together and doesn’t encroach on another ‘page’. We have lots of contact with the passengers of this printed vehicle about the upcoming journey – from writers, tourism organisations, PR companies, advertisers, and agencies. Each one has to be lined up and ready for take-off at the printers - but it doesn’t stop there! Once printed and placed onboard, back on the ground the admin tasks start - and before you’ve arrived at the end of the month, the next cycle has already begun.

In this issue, we hope those who have flown before notice the new design; the smooth curves mirror the lines of the wings, we’ve added some shorter articles and, if I may say, this issue is my favourite so far.

In theory, it is always meticulously planned – but in reality, some articles just don’t make the cut whilst others don’t make the deadline. With years of experience under our (seat)belts, we are prepared for such scenarios and by happy coincidence, this issue has a wonderful selection of pieces with a nostalgic feel.

We visit Sliema, which has never gone out of fashion, but this piece shows us why it has retained its popularity over the years. We are at the finish line of a classic boat race; where elegance is an understatement. We get a glimpse of a textile artist’s work – all made from scraps of fabrics, and we read a beautiful piece about one family’s summers, which gives you goosebumps reminiscing the innocence of youth.

Bringing us up to date are numerous events for every genre this month, and as always, a selection of restaurants to recount your own memories of, when you head back.

We hope you enjoy the magazine and your journey, and do send us any feedback!

THE BIG BLUE

IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE THAT LESS THAN TWOHUNDRED YEARS AGO, SLIEMA WAS MOSTLY FIELDS. THE SLEEPY FISHING VILLAGE CAUGHT THE EYE OF THE BRITISH AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL IN MALTA IN 1800, WHO SET UP HOMES FOR THE LANDED GENTRY IN THE AREA.

In 1885, the Stella Maris church was opened to the public and the village began developing into a town thereafter. Families linked to the British navy became residents, and wealthy Valletta and Three Cities families with their summer houses followed suit. This trendy escape to the seaside demographic grew and grew to the Sliema we now know.

Today, Sliema is a prized tourist destination and an international hub for technology whizzes who live side by side with long-term residents. Sliema may seem like a ready-built modern playground, with its air-conditioned malls and luxury apartments, but it has a rich colonial-era history still felt in its Art Deco and Art Nouveau architecture in the quieter residential quarters. With a central red phone box and street names like “Prince of Wales Street” and “Victoria Junction”, the Albion-era reminders of the Sliema of yonder are still ever-present.

One of Sliema’s most iconic features are its seawater baths–squarish pools which were cut into the rocks way back in Victorian times. At the time, seaside leisure towns were beginning to be all the rage back in the homelands of the British population. The physical and mental health benefits of leaving the city behind for salty sea air were recognized, and, to bring a slice of home to the

Maltese Islands, it was decided that these plunge pools, or “baths” were in order for optimal seaside bathing pleasure. Sliema’s rugged, rocky coastline makes sea access tricky. The man-made pools provided a way to cool off in style with the help of their inbuilt steps, and, since fewer people could swim back then, they were cut just deep enough to be able to stand up in the shallower end. With one’s whole body underwater, they also worked wonders for preserving a Victorian lady’s modesty, and she could emerge from the water as quickly as she went in, to be dressed and covered up in no time.

The rock pools are still intact and are linked to the sea with narrow channels which allow fresh seawater water in and out of the baths, keeping them cool and crystal clear whilst allowing sea-life to enter. Crabs, sea snails, small fish and sea urchins live in harmony in these baths, so if you plan to take a dip in the Sliema Baths, don’t forget your goggles!

For Sliema’s natives, “The Ferries” is the catch-all location referring to Sliema’s shopping district and string of cafes, which sit opposite the Valletta ferry landing site. Going to The Ferries for a coffee is a right of passage for Slimi ż i who use this time to catch up on the latest happenings. This afternoon ritual is traceable to the English

WORDS NICOLE PARNIS
DESTINATION 9

art of taking tea, albeit in the form of a cappuccino. After this, it’s likely that a spot of shopping will be in order, in either of Sliema’s two malls or pedestrianised high street.

Across this mecca for fashionistas is Saint Anne’s Square, a leafy, shady inlet, perfect for stopping for a scoop of gelato. If it’s something more substantial you’re after, you’re in the right side of town for a feast of home-cooked Maltese cuisine, just a stone’s throw away in Fawwara Lane. Ta’ Kris Restaurant’s rustic à la carte menu features old-fashioned favourites which are increasingly hard to come by, cooked to perfection according to recipes passed down through generations. For a smorgasbord of homegrown Maltese flavours, a Maltese Platter is an ideal starter to share. Main dishes include rabbit and the catch of the day, but it’s the chef’s bra ġ joli that puts them on the culinary map, and the reason you’ll need to book a table in advance.

The area known as “The Exiles”, near It-Torri, which gives Tower Road its namesake, is a nickname given to the area of Sliema which was inhabited by Russian settlers in the early 1900s. Exiles’ beach and its accompanying beach bar is a popular hangout for groups of friends who flock there to chill on the rocks while the sun goes down. Live bands play cover songs every evening during the summer months, so if commercial music isn’t for you, this is the place to go to meet likeminded souls.

Sliema’s Promenade is a long pedestrian stretch which overlooks the deep blue sea from Qui-Si-Sana beach to Balluta Bay, where it merges seamlessly into the town of St Julian’s. It’s an adored exercise route for many, who take the opportunity to workout alongside excellent views of the horizon with a walk or jog along “The Front”, as it’s known informally. A solo evening power-walk along The Front to clear one’s mind has been used as a fitness and self-care method for Slimi ż i from time immemorial. They know that sometimes, a bit of blue could be just what the doctor ordered.

Back in the days, Maltese families used to take their homemade dishes to the local baker, to have them baked in a traditional oven.

The resulting mouth-watering taste is legendary, so much so that the few remaining traditional bakers still offer this service. Nenu’s restaurant offers the same style of cooking, thus guaranteeing that unique delicious taste you will enjoy.

16 FOOD & DRINIK

LURED BY LISBON?

LISBON IS EMERGING AS A DYNAMIC CITY OF ART, CULTURE, SUSTAINABILITY, AND MOUTH-WATERING CUISINE. ONE OF THE OLDEST CITIES IN EUROPE, LISBON WAS AT THE FOREFRONT OF TRADE BETWEEN EUROPE, AFRICA, AND THE FAR EAST IN THE 15TH AND 16TH CENTURIES, AND WAS VERY NEARLY COMPLETELY DESTROYED IN 1755 BY A MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE. NOW IT’S A BLEND OF OLD AND NEW, WITH ITS HIP MARKETS, COOL BARS, COBBLESTONED STREETS, AND INTRIGUING MUSEUMS.

Pack proper walking shoes and get ready to explore artsy Lisbon - your feet will thank you.

BE A SUSTAINABLE TOURIST

Despite its seven sprawling hills, Lisbon is a very walkable city.

First time vis itors can explore Lisbon’s most famous landmarks at their own pace on foot in the downtown districts of Baixa and Chiado, and in Moorish Alfama. Book the “Responsible Walking Tour” if you are returning to the city, to take you away from the crowded touristic areas, and see the hidden gems of the city through the eyes of a local, passionate about their city. Or get on an e-bike for the “City of the Senses” to ur (cheating, but necessary for the steep hills!) and picnic in the park on local goodies.

TAKE A WALK IN BELÉM

Stroll along the River Tagus to take a trip back to the Age of Discovery. You can admire the sc ulptures on the imposing but modern, Padrão dos Descobrimentos and marvel at the 16th century Torre de Belém fortress. If you go in the summer months, you can cool down in the cloisters of the Mosteiro dos Jeróminos and admire the stone carvings and gothic

Manueline architecture in this UNESCO-listed monastery. Commissioned to celebrate Vasco da Gama’s successful 1948 sea voyage to India, his remains are ent ombed in the nave of the Church.

INDULGE IN PASTÉIS DE NATA

Lisboetas eat them for breakfast, served warm with a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar on the top! Try them fresh out of the oven at Café Pasteis de Belém, Belém being the birthplace of these world-famous Portuguese custard tarts with their sweet vanilla custardy filling in a crispy buttery pastry case. Don’t ask for the recipe though, the Jerónimos Catholic monks have sworn them to secrecy! Or join the queue at Manteigaria downtown in Chiado - they ring the bell when a new batch is ready! And another reason to love Lisbon – you can try the gluten free alternative at Zarzuela.

VISIT THE CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN MUSEUM

Named after a rich British entrepreneur of Armenian origin, this museum houses a selection of his donated 6000 art pieces, ranging from Persian carpets, Lalique jewellery, paintings and sculptures. They span over 5000 years of history, making it one of the world’s most important private art collections.

HUNT OUT THE STREET ART

An impressive number of new large-scale murals have cropped up all over the city in the last few years. Explore the neighbourhoods of Mouraria, Alfama and Cais do Sodré, where there’s lots to feast your eyes on.

Don’t miss the giant Iberian Lynx that dominates the public space at Parque das Nações. The works of Portuguese artist Bordalo II, who has several urban art objects made using discarded waste materials, are spread throughout the city.

SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP

For swanky designer brands head to the beautiful Avenida da Liberdade or if high street is what you are after, try the mall experience, visit Centro Colombo or Centro Vasco da Gama. For artsy souvenirs, the LX market or Rua Augusta are ideal.

EAT LIKE A LOCAL

Give yourself a treat and book a tabl e on the terrace at the stylish and sophisticated BAHR in Bairro Alto or go to the more secluded Café de São Bento where you need to ring the bell to enter. To share some local Petiscos, try your luck for a table at O Velho Eurico, you may have to wait your turn, but it’s well worth the wait.

Air Malta operates regular flights to Lisbon. More information on www.airmalta.com

HOP ON AND OFF TRAM NO.28

Don’t leave the city without riding the packed Tram 28 through the narrow streets of the old town, up some of the city’s perilously steep streets, stopping at several historical landmarks along the way, including the cloisters of the Sé (cathedral) and the Castelo de São Jorge.

Plan to end your trip at Graça for sunset at the least crowded Miradouro (view point) da Senhora do Monte nearby, one of the many Miradouros from the city’s seven hills. It’s a great place to enjoy the sweeping views of the River Tagus over the terracotta rooftops of the city and a good excuse to stop for a classic aperitif of chilled Port and tonic.

ESCAPE FROM THE CITY

Close by there are other great places to visit. Spend a day in Sintra, and marvel at the UNESCO-listed palaces in the park or if you want a day by the sea, have an ice cream from Santini’s at the beach in Cascais. For walkers, why not meander within the walls of a 12th century castle in medieval Óbidos, the wedding present town? And for foodies, you should try the tender meat of the Black Iberian Pig in Évora, washed down with a nice floral red from Alentejo.

UNRAVELLING THE ART OF WOOL WEAVING

AN INTERVIEW WITH ALDA BUĠEJA

HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR ARTISTIC CAREER ALONG THE YEARS?

Coming from a family of weavers, at the age of five, I was already trying my hands on the loom. Soon, I became fascinated with this trade. Woven products were very much in use in those days and many people were able to weave. However, my family was involved in the whole process of weaving, starting from rearing sheep to the production of wool and the creation of wool products. I often accompanied my mother during her visits to various clients in Malta and Gozo to sell our products and services.

This generated in me also a passion for business. In the meantime, to enhance my expertise in the weaving industry, I attended weaving courses in Sweden, Wales and England. Weaving on our Islands retained much of its popularity until the 1980s but then it started to wane. Yet, I was adamant not to let this trade die out. To raise awareness about the beauty of this ancient trade, I started to participate in radio and TV programmes. I also took part in various exhibitions, both locally and abroad. Eventually, I started to train others in this trade.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?

My genuine interest to keep this trade alive nourishes my inspiration. Rather than simply focusing on souvenir products, I weave practical and modern items. Coats, skirts, shawls, scarves, mittens, headwear, handbags, blankets, placemats, rugs and wall-hanging decorations, to name a few, in fashionable patterns and colours are more popular in today’s market.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE THAT YOU HAVE EVER CREATED?

There are a good number of creations that I am proud of. However, I am currently very pleased with having the opportunity to weave a stole that Pope Francis wore at the celebration of mass at Ta’ Pinu Shrine during his Apostolic Journey to Malta in 2022. I still treasure the prototype that I produced before working on the original stole.

WHY DID YOU FEEL THE NEED TO PURSUE A TEACHING CAREER AND SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS CRAFT TO OTHER STUDENTS? WHAT HAS THIS EXPERIENCE TAUGHT YOU THROUGHOUT THESE YEARS?

Training others is crucial to keeping this traditional trade alive. Although at first hand, weaving might seem overwhelmingly difficult, it is actually quite easy to learn. It is also deeply therapeutic, both mentally and physically. The limits to weaving are one’s creativity and inventiveness and so the possibility to come out with new things is boundless. The fact that times are changing and that technology is advancing should not be seen as a difficulty but as an opportunity. Household wooden looms can still be manufactured by local carpenters and they can be constructed according to one’s particular requirements, such as height and size.

Experience has taught me that this trade is still very relevant and it has great business potential. Once you tap people’s interest, you’ll discover that there are many out there of every age and gender who would be interested to learn if there is a possibility. I wonder why weaving has not yet found its place among the multitude of courses that are available at The Malta College of Art, Science and Technology.

FIGS

Did you know some figs are not considered vegan? A particular type of wasp dies while pollinating certain types of figs, giving them a nuttier flavour. This is the type of fact that might come up in a pub quiz.

CAPERS

Capers are an integral part of the Maltese diet, and grow wild! In our humble opinion, best way to enjoy them is as one of the ingredients on ħobż biż-żejt ; bread smeared with tomato paste, olive oil, onions, olives, capers, and seasoning too.

DIVING

Diving in Malta is another way to immerse yourself in history. Many wrecks are submerged below the water, some placed strategically, remnants from the past, giving divers a whole new side to see of Malta and Gozo. Many registered schools offer trial lessons and rent equipment.

SALUTING BATTERY

The Saluting Battery is a wonderful vantage point to view The Three Cities and The Grand Harbour. These canons are cared for by WirtArtna who curate other properties and places of interest. The canons are fired daily.

FIREWORKS

Which ever direction you turn in the evening of a weekend, you will see fireworks this month. Villages take it in turns to celebrate their festa and the build-up in the few days before, is as exciting as the climax.

MIXTA CAVE

This natural cave located on the eastern side of Ramla Bay is very commonly confused with Calypso's Cave which is located on the other side of the same bay. Both are worth a visit and what a great instagram shot!

LAZARUS TILES

Lazarus Tiles is a project that seeks to preserve and document Maltese cement tiles which would otherwise be destined for the landfill. Started by Thomas Camilleri, these colourful and sometimes centuryold tiles are sourced from building sites, renovation projects and even skips, before being restored and mounted in steel. That way, after a lifetime of bearing our weight, they can now enjoy their retirement looking at us instead. As always, it’s the stories behind these objects that intrigue Thomas so much and he documents his discoveries online on Instagram (@thelazarusclub) and on Facebook (Lazarus Tiles).

BAILLI DE SUFFREN TROPHY: A UNIQUE OFFSHORE SAILING ADVENTURE

IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE IN MALTA ON JULY 4TH 2023, MAKE SURE YOU VISIT BIRGU, JUST ACROSS THE VALLETTA GRAND HARBOUR, TO SEE THE FIRST PARTICIPANTS OF THE 22ND BAILLI DE SUFFREN TROPHY CROSS THE FINISH LINE.

Named after the illustrious Admiral Bailli de Suffren, who is hailed as one of France's most skilled sailors, this trophy aims to foster friendly competition among offshore racing enthusiasts. Yet, this is no ordinary sailing competition; it's a gathering of classic yachts, vintage vessels, and traditional beauties, adhering to the rules of the International Mediterranean Committee. The underlying ethos is one of respect—for tradition, the environment, the crews, and, of course, fellow participants. Every aspect has been meticulously planned to ensure a lasting camaraderie among the gentlemen sailors. In fact, it's not just recommended, but essential to don a blazer and wear white during stopovers. Naval etiquette and rituals are meticulously followed, from saluting the crews to raising the flags up the masts. Yet, it is the human connection that truly shines, as a chain of solidarity binds the crews both on land and at sea, maintained through thoughtful gestures. Imagine this: the first crew to cross the finish line is obligated to hand out a chilled bottle of champagne to be shared with the next crew, and so on until the last competitor arrives.

Unlike many events where sailboats leave the quay in the morning and return in the evening, this is a real offshore race. Those who have sailed in the Mediterranean know the challenges of adverse weather conditions when winds wane and heavy hulls bob in the swells. The handling of traditional sails and the reliance on original bronze winches, lacking the force and motorisation of modern counterparts, demand skill and discipline. Interior fittings are genuine works of art, with strict instructions on their care. Thus, discipline becomes a crucial factor, not only in relation to others, but also in maintaining the equipment. A minor breakage can have significant consequences, leaving a boat immobilised or facing irreparable damage due to outdated or unobtainable parts. Seamanship and preparation are paramount before stepping aboard these vessels.

Since 2018, the trophy has been under the stewardship of Lionel Péan, a legendary figure in French sailing. Péan, a winner of round-the-world crewed races such as the Solitaire du Figaro and

other multiple world championships, took on the mantle of the trophy, with the support of some local helpers, like long time Gozo resident, Olivier Plique, the races’ ambassador in Malta.

Each year, the regatta commences at the end of June in the picturesque town of Saint-Tropez, where Suffren himself discovered his passion for the sea. From there, the participants embark on a thrilling journey, making stops in Sardinia or Corsica (this year, it's the charming town of Bonifacio in Corsica), then proceeding to Sicily (Trapani), and finally concluding in Malta, spanning nearly 650 miles. What makes the Bailli de Suffren Trophy even more extraordinary is the connection it maintains between

France and Malta. The historical and maritime ties between the two countries led to a cooperation agreement signed by the cities of Saint-Tropez and Birgu on October 21, 2012. This agreement solidified their status as twinned tourist and nautical destinations, celebrating a decade of partnership last year. To further enhance the spirit of seamanship, technical prowess, and the art of living, the organisation offers the finest addresses in private and independent hotel establishments such as The Snop House in Senglea, one of the Three Cities of Malta.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Vice-Admiral Pierre André de Suffren (1729-1788), renowned as the Bailli of Saint-Tropez and distinguished Bailli and Grand Cross in the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, achieved remarkable successes during his extensive voyages across the seas and oceans. His prominent position in French history is closely associated with numerous locations, particularly his affiliation with Saint-Tropez. As an exceptional sailor and strategic mastermind, Suffren stands unrivalled as the foremost admiral of the latter half of the 18th century. Notably feared by the English, who bestowed upon him the moniker "the Admiral Satan”, Suffren's maritime brilliance is commemorated within one of the rooms at the Malta Maritime Museum, situated in the town of Birgu.

A HERITAGE MALTESE BRAND IS REVIVED FOR A NEW GLOBAL AUDIENCE

VILLA BOLOGNA POTTERY HAS BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH MALTA FOR NEARLY 100 YEARS. NOW UNDER THE OWNERSHIP OF SOPHIE AND ROWLEY EDWARDS, A YOUNG COUPLE WITH A LONG HISTORY IN MALTA, THE COMPANY IS OPENING UP TO A NEW GLOBAL AUDIENCE. THE NEW VILLA BOLOGNA POTTERY RESTAURANT HAS RECENTLY OPENED IN THE VILLAGE OF ATTARD.

SOPHIE & ROWLEY, YOU TOOK OVER THE POTTERY IN 2020 - WHAT HAS HAPPENED SINCE THEN?

Villa Bologna Pottery was established in 1924. Its owner Jasper de Trafford who is a friend of ours, asked us if we might like to take it over and we jumped at the chance. We took it over just as lockdown happened, and this gave us the chance to curate and edit the archives of table and giftware. We have chosen to focus on our most iconic pieces which are very Maltese in their style and design: pineapples and shell vases, artichokes bowls, boat and dolphins lamps to fish jugs. We have a very distinct aesthetic and we have recently introduced the brand to the UK with the launch of a London shop in Holland Park and a new website that ships all over the world.

WHY DO YOU THINK VILLA BOLOGNA POTTERY IS SO LOVED BY THE MALTESE?

Our work is instantly recognisable as Villa Bologna Pottery. We think it’s nice for the country to have a design brand that it so distinctly Maltese in its style and like nothing else out there - its Mediterranean yes, but it is also very much rooted in the unique island that we call home. The fact that everything we make is unique, as its all handmade and hand painted by local artists, gives Villa Bologna Pottery is own look and style.

THE NEW RESTAURANT IS OPEN IN THE GROUNDS OF THE VILLA BOLOGNA, TELL US WHY THIS IS SO SPECIAL?

The pottery, the shop and now the restaurant (that we opened in June) are all located in the grounds of the Villa Bologna, a stunning 18th century villa. You will find us in the quiet and picturesque village of Attard, which is about 20 minutes away from Valletta and this gives the shop and workshop a very calm and serene atmosphere. The

restaurant garden is in a shaded courtyard surrounded by scented citrus trees and a vine strewn pergola. We serve coffee and pastries in the morning and then lunch and dinner.

THE POTTERY, THE SHOPS (IN MALTA AND IN LONDON) AND THE RESTAURANT ARE A FAMILY AFFAIR. CAN YOU TELL US MORE?

Both of us work together across the pottery and the two shops and website. Essentially we are thinking, sleeping and living with the brand every day. Now with the restaurant we are also eating, drinking with it! Both of us are unabashed foodies and we love Italian food so the restaurant will offer the Italian dishes. Everything has been chosen by us including the pieces of Villa Bologna Pottery on which we serve everything on. We use herbs and vegetables that we have grown in the garden at the villa, which we harvest with our children, who also get to play in the gardens and in the pottery. We really want the restaurant, at least in the day time, to appeal to families, as we want this to be a restaurant for all generations to enjoy together. As for the shop in London, Sophie's mother is helping us with that there too - so it really is a family business.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE PLANS FOR VILLA BOLOGNA AROUND THE

WORLD?

The shop in London and the website which offers worldwide shipping have been a huge investment for us, and we have been so bowled over by the response to our products from all over the world - people really love what we do! To be able to talk about Malta as a great design and cultural hotspot in Europe is such a positive step especially as more varied travellers are now coming to our island. We feel so lucky to be able to share one of Malta's best kept secrets with the rest of the world.

OF FABRICS, TEXTILES, AND EMBROIDERY CLAUDIA

THINK OF SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES IN THE WORLD—THE MEMORABLE SEASCAPES, THE EVERCHANGING COASTLINES, THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS AND OTHER STUNNING LANDSCAPES. NOW, JUST IMAGINE HOW BEAUTIFUL THEY CAN BE WHEN BROUGHT TO LIFE THROUGH FABRIC ART.

Claudia Clayman is a textile artist. Inspired by the love she has for seascapes and landscapes, she creates the most wonderful masterpieces by using scraps of fabric and embroidery.

As we start chatting about her work, she takes me back to her childhood days and how she has always had a deep love for fabric. Since her father had a textile manufacturing business called Malta Weave just adjacent to their house, she recalls being surrounded by fabric, thread, weaving looms, and sewing machines for as long as she can remember. Once she turned 18, she was gifted a sewing machine and immediately started making her own clothes and other practical items.

Nevertheless, it took a few years for Claudia to fully pursue her love for all things fabric. After 5 years working in the banking industry, she moved to the UK to study nursing in London, where she worked at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead as a senior nurse specialist, before retiring after 31 years in the NHS. She

tells me that, “Retirement meant that I had time to explore other creative options using fabric. I considered using a quilting technique, but it wasn’t my cup of tea, and I developed my own style using fabric collage and embroidery. I also love baking cakes, and dancing – mainly rock and roll, and swing.”

Throughout the years, Claudia has had her work exhibited in Malta and at various art fairs in London. She tells me that her earlier works are inspired by the turquoise Mediterranean Sea and the rugged Maltese coastline while others feature rural landscapes; “I am strongly drawn to the sea and have recently created a series of Cornish and Scottish ports and beaches. I am also attracted to rural landscapes, which are a bit more of a challenge.”

The process starts with a sketch. From that point onwards, Claudia spends lots of time trawling through her large stash of material and scraps to find the right colours for each element of the picture. “The majority of the fabric I use is recycled,” Claudia says. “I cut

38 ART

and layer the fabric, hand-sewing each section in turn, adding detail by using embroidery, and organza to create shadows and depth. I never throw away any scraps, as they can always be used on another project.” Once the fabric and textures are chosen, she mainly works off photos, following the details of the image to give life to her pictures.

Moving on to the methods and media used, Claudia explains that the beauty of fabric lies in the variety of colour, texture and shiny/matte contrasts. “Lace is excellent for creating sea surf, and scarves are also particularly useful, as they are often made from very fine fabric which can blend colours,” she continues. Most of Claudia’s creations feature fabrics that are loosely divided into three colour groups; blues, greens and beige/brown. Although Claudia tells me she is mostly drawn to the blue hues, she also needs the other earthy colours to complete a picture.

In its very essence, Claudia explains that her art is vibrant and representational since she believes that people are more likely to connect with places they recognise. “At first glance, most people think my pictures are oil or acrylic paintings and have some difficulty recognising that they are actually made from fabric. I love it when one of my pieces finds its forever home.” Over the years, she has done commissions of memorable places for her clients, including ones such as Biarritz, Vietnam, Scotland, Ireland, Venice, The London Eye, Mdina, Mellieħa, and Buskett.

As long as Claudia continues to enjoy creating her vibrant masterpieces, she plans on pursuing her love and interest in the world of fabric art for many years to come.

HOVER-STILL

EXHIBITION BY 7 MALTESE AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS IN VALLETTA

LILY AGIUS GALLERY PRESENTS A COLLECTIVE EXHIBITION OF OIL PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND SCULPTURE THIS JULY, TITLED "HOVER-STILL" AT THE MALTA SOCIETY OF ARTS. INSPIRED BY THE POEM "GO FISHING" BY TED HUGHES, THE ARTISTS OFFER AN INTERPRETATION IN THEIR OWN DISTINCTIVE STYLES.

Creating art is a process, borne from inspiration and imagination; the result is a way to relay those thoughts or memories, and perhaps also fears and dreams to others. Whilst also revealing their skill and freedom to express themselves, the artists communicate various perspectives of the poem – albeit subtly, but nonetheless bathed in its greater meaning of transience, fragility, and a higher state of consciousness.

The exhibition Hover-Still presents artwork by Eiko Borcherding, CO-MA, Stephanie Galea, Luca Indraccolo, Sallyanne Morgan, Ivan Prieto, and Julien Vinet, between the 6th and the 20th of July at The Malta Society of Arts, 219 Republic Street, Valletta.

Open Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm and Saturday 8am to 1.30pm. The exhibition is sponsored by iLab Photo and BAS Ltd.

PAUTA - SOLO EXHIBITION BY MARIO ATTARD

VENUE:

MARIE GALLERY 5, Ground Floor, The Centre, Tigne, Sliema

3rd June - 11th August 2023

ONLINE:

www.mariegallery5.com

The exhibition ‘Pauta’ showcases a retrospective selection of works by artist Mario Attard based in Madrid and presented for the first time in his homeland, Malta. The term "Pauta," which comes from Spanish, denotes a recognisable sequence, regular pattern, or even a rhythmic beat on how something is done or happens. In this case the term directly refers to the artist's creative process in shaping his work, encompassed through an almost performative ritual.

Attard's interaction with clay, for instance, follows a process of construction and deconstruction, indicating a discernible pattern in his art-making practice. This pattern, however, is not evident in the forms that emerge from his creative process, underscoring the paradoxical nature of art and the artist himself. The body of works have been created over the past 3 years and some have been part of Mario’s latest solo exhibition in Madrid at Pequena Galleria. The selection of work build upon the reflection of ritual and performance through medium.

Although the artist follows a repetitive pattern of thought, research, and formation in creating his pieces, each work remains unique, much like life's pattern and cycle, giving rise to various variations. Through "Pauta," Attard celebrates the diversity of form and color in his work, revealing his intrinsic desire to express himself through this medium.

MALTA SUMMERS OF YORE

I GREW UP LISTENING TO SALT ENCRUSTED TALES. SITTING IN THE SHALLOW WATERS - UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF PARENTS AND AUNTS, NEIGHBOURS AND AN ASSORTMENT OF PETS WHO ARE LEFT WITH LITTLE OPTION BUT TO HEAD TO THE SHORE FOR SOME COOL RESPITE - GRANDMA AND I WOULD SPEND HOURS IN THE SEA CHATTING.

Summer inevitably brings back memories of summers past and as we sat there till our fingers and toes went wrinkly (admittedly my nanna stood at a disadvantage on this front) I would listen to her recount nostalgia-tinted tales I had heard a million times before, embellished anew with every retelling.

She used to love telling me about the wooden beach cabins which dotted Għadira Bay – tiny changing rooms which afforded the locals some discretion as they changed into their swimwear. She found them fascinating and I, by implication, did too. All the while she’d be fiddling away at the rocks behind her with a sharp knife small enough to hide discreetly in the palm of her hand. For my nanna Giorgia was a self-confessed limpet fiend. No limpet was safe from her acute gaze and that practiced twist of the wrist. She would pin-point her delicacy of choice, free it from the wall and then from its shell and devour it in one swift and admirable motion, quite literally, al fresco. And just as no limpet was safe from her, no limpet was ever big or juicy enough as those from the

summers of her youth. Me on the other hand, still burdened by the unfortunate constraints of an underdeveloped palate, would just sit there with my inflatable armbands cutting into my skin and annoyed sea snails nipping at my chubby thighs. Satiated, she would ask for my help to get out of the water, head back into the crisp white washed boathouse for a plate of something “a bit more substantial” and a well deserved nap.

Summers somehow felt longer as a kid. Adults would rush around you – although ‘rush’ is a big word given the sweltering temperatures – leaving us young ones relatively unattended and unoccupied. Fans would be on all day, their whirring sound lamenting the too short a winter they have just spent covered in plastic. Activities taken up half heartedly were almost always abandoned mid-stream. But as evenings drew to a close, every household on the street would start making its way out onto the doorstep, still warm from a solid nine hours of relentless sun. Improvised seating arrangements would sprout up on village core

51 LOCAL

pavements. Neighbours would mingle over beer and a weird and wonderful assortment of furniture. Older cousins would be forced to accompany their younger ones to the nearest ice-cream shop, their reluctance appeased by an extra coin or two. These were the perfect conditions to inspire yet another round of that age-old lament along the lines of ‘we had it so much better in the past!’

I distinctly remember my family recalling the basket-laden vendors which used to pass through the village with items as diverse as nuts arranged in meticulous segments, all manner of fresh seafood, ices and fruits. “And what about sea urchins? You call these sea urchins? Back in the day we’d crack them open and eat them there and then at the shore with a teaspoon. Now that’s fresh. Tsk.” Indeed, no trip to the sea was complete without stepping on one of these spiky demons and having to dedicate the next couple of days to complaining about it and toying at one’s foot with blunt tweezers. My uncles would recall the improvised football pitches in the middle of dusty roads and how they often went one full game without having to dismantle the “goal posts” since cars were

so few and far between. And before you know it, an unnaturally energetic voice would bring you back to life from what must have been a heatwave induced nap with tales from a remote and romanticised childhood when kids were given carte blanche as to how to spend their summer days. They would leave the house at day break, cause all manner of havoc climbing up trees and stealing fruit from exhausted farmers, or jumping into unattended small boats to go fish for octopus in secret coves, only to return home battered and bruised, after a long, hot and sticky day.

The sepia-filtered past of a largely still rural Malta and the seas-ofplenty that once lapped up onto its shores are easy to romanticise. My family and my friends’ families do it constantly and consistently to this very day. I’m pretty convinced it’s a national hobby. Recollections collect in heaps like yellowing postcards, family albums fill in the blanks and anchor some of the wilder tales in some form of context. Before you know it, it’s July, again, and inevitably you’re back at your favourite spot by the sea doing the very same thing, reminiscing about summers past.

DEBUNKING

ENERGY COMES AT A HIGH PRICE, AND WITHIN THE CURRENT GLOBAL CRISIS OF RISING ENERGY COSTS PERSISTING, IT IS NOW MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO CONSIDER MAKING OUR HOUSEHOLDS AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE.

Lately, it has become the norm that whenever we purchase new appliances, we aim to purchase the most energy-efficient ones on the market, even if that means spending a little bit more initially, as that will, in turn, result in cheaper utility bills over a longer period.

However, we tend to overlook the benefits of investing in green homes from the outset. Investing in PV panels, insulation, doubleglazing, and HVAC systems might be considered at a later stage, given the initial capital outflow when purchasing a house. However, investing in green homes may not be as prohibitive as some might imagine, particularly given the savings in energy consumption.

With the BOV Personal Energy Loan and the BOV Home Energy Loan, green financing solutions can be availed of at fully subsidised interest rates for the first ten years of the loan. Interest is then paid by the customer for subsequent years if the loan term is extended beyond the 10-year initial period. This means, that customers opting to take out these loans with BOV to finance eco-friendly and sustainable solutions for their households, will not be paying any interest during the first ten years of the loan.

The difference between the BOV Home Energy Loan and the BOV Personal Energy Loan lies in the amounts that can be borrowed and the repayment period. The BOV Home Energy Loan is targeted

primarily at new homeowners who are looking to invest in a sustainable and eco-friendly home, with maximum borrowing amounts of up to €100,000 and a possible 25 or 40-year repayment term. The BOV Personal Energy Loan is targeted at individuals who are considering green renovations in their existing household, where financing is intended for a specific green investment. A maximum of €50,000 can be borrowed and must be repaid during a maximum 15-year period. Both financing solutions enjoy additional benefits including the waiving of processing fees. At present, the upfront contribution is being waived for the BOV Personal Energy Loan, and no collateral is required either.

Bank of Valletta has already stepped up its efforts to live up to the ESG principles it has embraced, whilst embarking on several environmental initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint in its dayto-day business activity. The focus now shifts to supporting its customers seeking financing options to think ‘sustainable’ and ‘green’. Customers who, like Bank of Valletta, have the environment at heart, can take the initiative and make a positive impact, while at the same time personally benefiting from these Eco-Financing Solutions.

Further information on Green Financing Solutions, including the Personal Energy Loan products, is available on www.bov.com.

DWEJRA WATCH TOWER HERITAGE

SAVED: HERITAGE RESTORED

STANDING ALONE AMIDST THE HARSH, NATURAL SCENERY OF GOZO, DWEJRA WATCH TOWER HAS A FASCINATING HISTORY. TODAY, VISITORS CAN EXPLORE THIS RECENTLY RESTORED KNIGHT’S ERA HERITAGE SITE, WHICH DATES BACK TO 1652, AND BE REWARDED WITH STUNNING ROOFTOP VIEWS OVERLOOKING GOZO’S DRAMATIC COASTLINE.

The tower’s original role was to provide protection to the coastline at Dwejra during the time of Grand Master Lascaris. The tower also guarded Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral , the General’s Rock or, as it is referred to today, the Fungus Rock. On this tiny, isolated rock grew Cynomorium Coccineum or Fungus Melitensis, which the Knights considered to be highly valuable. The fungus was believed to possess powerful medicinal virtues.

As the popularity of the site grew, the Knights took active measures to guard Fungus Rock, which became the first protected ‘nature’ site in the Maltese Islands. Eventually, visitors were allowed to see the fungus for themselves, but it was not a journey for the faint hearted, as access was by use of a suspended rope and wooden boxcar.

BACK TO NATURE

Today, the tower sits within a protected Natura2000 site, and is a haven for geology and ecology enthusiasts, or simply anyone wishing to enjoy nature and fine views. A wealth of unique features including the Inland Sea, protected fossil beds, rare endemic plants, and archaeological features are all contained in

a relatively small area surrounded by limestone cliffs. Dwejra is a place to visit at any time of the year, and it is a popular venue with photographers, swimmers, hikers, divers, cyclists and fans of amazing sunsets.

Dwejra is a designated Dark Sky Heritage Area with the possibility to view the Milky Way with the naked eye. The cliffs are also home to protected Shearwater colonies, and it is a magical experience to venture out after dark and listen to the haunting, eerie calls of these secretive seabirds under the stars.

The tower was saved for the nation by Din l-Art Ħelwa, Malta’s National Trust. Recent restoration works have been completed and the tower is once again open to visitors. Entry is free of charge.

The Dwejra Tower restoration works were part of ‘The Northern Coastal Watch’ project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund Operational Programme 2014 – 2020 and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA). For more information and opening times visit the tower’s Facebook page at facebook.com/Dwejra.tower

A FUNNY STORY

I GET A BUZZ WHEN I SEE A MALTESE SURNAME APPEAR IN CREDITS AND WANT TO KNOW ALL ABOUT THE PERSON AND HOW THEY GOT TO HAVE THEIR NAME IN LIGHTS.

A couple of years ago I saw ‘Steve Bu ġ eja’ and did what any inquisitive person would do and stalked him on social media; in my job this is called research. Fast forward to a second season of a sitcom he co-writes and appears in and many stand-up gigs later, and I finally get to hear his story.

Steve li ves in the UK but is well travelled with his job, taking his stand-up shows to all corners of the globe. Just back from Copenhagen and about to head off the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with his latest show, ‘Self Doubt (I think)’, his journey into the field actually started as a young man workin g at a Summer camp in the USA. He won a staff talent contest and entered the world of stand-up, doing gigs around Manchester, where he went to university.

Working on materials for stand-up is a long process and his advice to budding comedians is to go and do it! “There’s no better buzz than peeking out from backstage and seeing people packing a theatre that have come to see you,” he says.

Steve has an impressive CV already with Buffering – a millennial comedy show centred on people who are too young to settle down and get married and too poor to have a mortgage – having its second series on ITV2. He hosted the BBC Radio4 series ‘Economics With Subtitles’, he has scripted and appeared on Russell Howard’s and Zoe Ball’s shows, and has also scripted materials for ‘Mock the Week’, ‘8 out of 10 Cats’ and Iain Stirling’s ‘CelebAbility’.

Having always written sketches and sitcom scripts with numerous workshops and courses to hone his craft, he says his nanna is seriously funny and believes that that’s where he gets his talent from. His grandparents left Malta after WWII and moved to the UK but he still has many relatives in Malta. Let's lobby to get him to come and perform on Maltese soil, after his UK wide tour that runs throughout 2024!

DIVE INTO MALTA'S MARITIME PAST WITH THE VIRTUAL MUSEUM

IN TODAY'S DIGITAL AGE, THE PRESERVATION AND PRESENTATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE HAVE TAKEN ON NEW DIMENSIONS. ONE REMARKABLE EXAMPLE OF THIS IS A RECENTLY LAUNCHED VIRTUAL MUSEUM THAT CAN BE FOUND AT UNDERWATERMALTA.ORG

The aim of this innovative online platform offers a captivating journey into Malta's rich maritime history and underwater cultural heritage. With its user-friendly interface and immersive 3D models, the museum opens up an underworld of shipwrecks, historic photographs, and captivating visuals that would otherwise remain hidden from the public eye. This is especially true for shipwrecks off the coast of Malta as the majority of these are situated in waters that are deeper than 50 meters.

UnderwaterMalta.org boasts an impressive collection of over 20 historic sites that range from a 2700 year old Phoenician shipwreck to an aircraft that crashed into the Mediterranean during the Cold War. Each site serves as a window of opportunity to interactively explore Malta's intriguing maritime past. LIGHTS, CANNES, AND MORNING STAR!

MY LATEST FILM, "MORNING STAR," STARRING BEN LAMB, NANETTE BRIMMER, NARCY CALAMATTA, STEPHEN OLIVER, EDWARD MERCIECA AND A RANGE OF TALENTED MALTESE ACTORS, IS A PRODUCTION THAT DELVES INTO THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF CHRISTINA RATCLIFFE, A BRITISH ENTERTAINER WHO VENTURED TO MALTA IN THE 1940s TO DANCE AND SING AT THE MORNING STAR MUSIC HALL, ORIGINALLY LOCATED ON NICHOLAS STREET, VALLETTA.

68 FILM
WORDS LARISSA BONACI

For years, her story has captivated audiences in Malta and beyond, serving as an inspiration due to her immense talent, kind-heartedness, and the value she brought during the tumultuous times of World War II.

While in Malta, Christina graced the glamorous music halls, leaving an indelible impression on the audience. However, when the curtains closed, she took on a different role – one of the creators of The Whizz Bangs, a group of theatre performers dedicated to boosting the morale of soldiers and sailors amidst the rubble and ruins that surrounded a devastated Malta. Christina's unwavering love for Malta prompted her to seek additional ways to contribute, leading her to become a plotter at what is now known as the Lascaris War

Rooms, situated at the Upper Barrakka of Valletta. With her charisma and presence, she ascended to the position of Captain of the Watch, becoming a beacon of hope wherever she went.

In 1943 the Air Council awarded Christina Ratcliffe the BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL in recognition of her meritorious service and devotion of duty during WW2, in Malta. As a Maltese producer, I firmly believe that her story deserves international recognition. Thus, I took it upon myself to create a mid-length film that could travel across borders and captivate audiences worldwide. The entire film was shot in Malta, where our exceptionally talented cast and crew poured their hearts and souls into creating a beautiful piece filled with music, song, dance, love, and resilience.

Now in her 80s, Christina reminisces about her younger self, her life in Malta, and her unwavering dedication to this tiny island that stole her heart. One cannot help but be moved by the beautiful whirlwind romance that blo ssomed between Christina and Adrian Warburton, an RAF photo reconnaissance pilot. Their story adds an enchanting layer to the already captivating narrative.

Bringing "Morning Star" to an international platform was a dream come true, and it led me to the esteemed Cannes Film Festival – an experience I shall never forget. I arrived as a novice and departed as a semi-pro, with countless stories that could fill a lifetime. Cannes proved to be a magical realm, a theme park for filmmakers where I felt right at home among like-minded

individuals who shared the same passion for storytelling and art. Of course, amidst the sea of cr eative souls, you'll always encounter a few oddballs, but hey, that's what makes the journey all the more interesting. Th e key is not to take yourself too seriously and embrace the joyous ride.

Although I regrettably didn't get a chance to watch many films at Cannes, the fear of missing out (FOMO) on the glamorous red carpet and the magnificent films that premiered there kept me busy. But as they say, there's always next year! One valuable lesson I learned at Cannes is to never underestimate the power of good shoes. Is it normal for anyone to walk over 20,000 steps per day for five consecutive days? It felt like a Herculean

task! Nonetheless, amidst the bustling atmosphere, I kept the coffee flowing and the smiles beaming. People were eager to connect, and you never knew who you'd bump into – a reminder that everyone has a story worth sharing.

W ith so much to do at Cannes, having a plan is essential. However, don't be afraid to embrace the unexpected and go with the flow. Enjoy the allure of the French Riviera, immerse yourself in the film market, explore the exhibitions, visit the pavilions, attend the par ties, and savour the delights of the local restaurants. There's always something happening to keep you enthralled.

During my time at Cannes, I had the opportunity to speak about my dear

Christina and the film we created in her honour, "Morning Star." Now, it's time to eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for our film. Currently, we are traversing the film festival circuit, sharing Christina's extraordinary journey with audiences far and wide. Stay tuned and follow our social media channels for updates on our exciting cinematic adventure.

UPON REFLECTION

THE STORY OF JOSIE BUGELLI’S GLASS GILDING STUDIO

WE REACH THE END OF OUR CHAT AND I ASK JOSIE ABOUT WHAT I SHOULD REFER TO HIM AS. HE HESITATES. HE TURNS AROUND TO HIS COMPUTER AND CLICKS THROUGH TO HIS INSTAGRAM PAGE AND REFERS TO THE LIST THERE.

Simply referring to him as a glass gilder would belie the fact that Josie is, in fact, more of a Josie of all trade s. And he is the master of them all.

Josie started off in the design world at a very interesting juncture in its history. He was there before computers took over and analogue was king. He was there when old met new and digital turned everything we knew on its head. And he is still here now, using technology to facilitate the creation of beautiful signage.

The 90s were a terrible time for our streetscapes with regards to signage. Advances in large-format printing meant that cheap, fast signage could be churned out at a fraction of the cost of what traditional methods could produce. There was also a hunger for

all things contemporary which would lift us out of the 80s and all that came with that decade and propel us towards what a forwardthinking nation ought to be.

Having been there to experience the comings and goings of these trends, Josie was never one to mope around mourning the loss of business or customers due to shifting fashions. He’d pivot, retrain and reinvent himself.

Having always had a love for drawing, during the early 80s while he worked as a Telemalta shift worker, he put his spare time to good use and enrolled himself in an interior design course by correspondence. He loved the tactile nature of the process but soon realised that it wasn’t where his passion lay. At the time there

74 ARTISAN
WORDS
THOMAS CAMILLERI

was also a graphic design course being given at the Design School on Merchants Street, Valletta and he quickly signed up. A few weeks later, whilst enjoying a night out at the Axis nightclub in Paceville, he was with a friend when they started speaking to someone who told them that they were recruiting a graphic designer for Crest, run by Victor Calleja. His friend told them that Josie was interested even though he had no idea what a portfolio was, let alone have one impressive enough to land him a job. Being a Friday evening with the interview on Monday, he designed a series of artworks to flesh out a basic portfolio and walked in with a threadbare CV and a lot of hope. Victor saw that he was keen and that he had an eye for the job, but soon found out that he’d never worked on a computer. ‘Are you willing to learn?’ he asked him, in the age-old way success stories tend to start off. He got the job.

After his first couple of paychecks he invested in his first Mac, a nine-inch model that set him back a cool Lm2,200 - around €6k today. He was soon designing artworks for all the local printers but as things happen, the printers soon bought their own Macs and Josie moved on to teaching the designers how to use these new-fangled machines instead.

Following a period of uncertainty and self-discovery, he eventually fell into sign-making, which he has since grown and evolved with over the past 20 years. At first it was all PVC, perspex and computer-cut stickers but he soon realised that there was a growing interest in glass gilding - a technique that had fallen out of fashion decades before.

It’s hard to determine exactly when the shift happened, but at some point there was a worldwide return to the appreciation of small-time craftsmanship. Maybe due to fashion or cost or both, these artisan makers had diminished in number, edged out of the market by mass-production and globalisation. Josie presciently read this return and has been at the forefront of this resurgence. As part of this effort, he sharpened his skills by studying with David A. Smith MBE in the UK, one of the world’s leading glass-gilding artists.

What he’s done in true Josie style is merge a variety of his skills to make his workshop sustainable. He has blended graphic design, laser-cut printing, traditional brushwork and gold-leaf gilding and is constantly exploring new techniques and skills.

It’s hard to say what his next move will be, as at this moment, things are only growing in this area of signage. A rediscovered love of the traditional, coupled with restoration incentives, is keeping Josie busy. Rest assured though, the moment there’s change afoot, Josie will be right ahead of that curve.

EXPERIENCE JAZZ AT ONE OF MALTA’S MOST BREATHTAKING VENUES

THE MALTA JAZZ FESTIVAL IS RENOWNED FOR ITS PICTURESQUE VENUE AND STELLAR LINE-UPS, WHICH INCLUDED LEGENDARY MUSICIANS SUCH AS CHICK COREA, HERBIE HANCOCK, AND BETTY CARTER. THE FESTIVAL HAS FOR SURE BECOME A STAPLE IN THE LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL SCENE!

The festival kicks off on the 10th of July at the Embassy Hotel in the heart of Malta’s historic capital city, Valletta, with an opening concert featuring Daniel Sant, William Smith, and Dean Montanaro. Throughout the week, evening concerts will be held at the Valletta City Theatre, featuring The New York Blue Quintet. Led by Joe Magnarelli and Jeb Patton, this group is known for its mastery of the hard bop tradition.

What makes this jazz festival so special? It is a truly extraordinary event set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Grand Harbour. Besides, this festival is a true gem for the jazz scene, renowned for its exceptional blend of artistic brilliance and widespread appeal. In a world where jazz festivals sometimes lose their jazz essence, the Malta Jazz Festival stands tall, maintaining a programme within jazz tradition, while also captivating new audiences.

With great honour, one of this year's headlining artists is 23-year-old Grammy Award winner Samara Joy, who has won accolades both as Best New Artist and for Best Vocal Jazz Album. Her performance is surely highly anticipated, and she will be performing at Ta' Liesse on the 14th of July. Saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, another emerging talent, will also take the stage that night.

The festival will also feature renowned trumpet player Raynald Colom, Kurt Rosenwinkel Quartet, and the Laurent Coq Trio. Additionally, the charismatic Kurt Elling, a leading male jazz vocalist, will be returning to the Malta Jazz Festival. Elling, along with guitarist Charlie Hunter and their band, will present their funk and soul project SUPERBLUE. Local jazz veteran Paul Giordimaina and his trio SFERA will pay homage to the late Charles 'City' Gatt, while Ukraine-based Maltese saxophonist Carlo Muscat and his quartet will perform music from Carlo's album, Wool.

A beloved tradition of the festival are the jam sessions, held at the local jazz bar Offbeat. These free sessions contribute to building an accessible jazz community. The festival offers free masterclasses conducted by professional jazz musicians, providing enthusiasts and aspiring musicians with valuable insights into jazz styles and techniques with masterclasses conducted by Immanuel Wilkins, Laurent Coq, Francesco Ciniglio, and members of the New York Blue Note Collective.

The Malta Jazz Festival will take place in Valletta, Malta, from the 10th to the 15th of July. For more information, visit www.festivals.mt/mjf.

TAGLIATELLE SHORT-RIB BOLOGNESE

INGREDIENTS

2 1/2 pounds English cut beef short ribs

3 tablespoon olive oil, divided

3 large carrots

1 large yellow onion

1 stalk celery

8 cloves garlic

2 tablespoon tomato paste

1 cup dry red wine

2 sprigs fresh rosemary, 4 sprigs fresh sage leaves & 12 sprigs fresh thyme

METHOD

2 bay leaves

14 ounces crushed tomatoes

2 cup low-sodium beef broth

kosher salt & ground black pepper, to season

For Short Rib Ragu pasta:

24 ounces Tagliatelle

½ cup heavy cream

½ cup grated parmesan

Grated parmesan, finely chopped fresh herbs

FOR THE BRAISED SHORT RIB RAGU SAUCE

First, peel and dice the carrots, onions and celery for the sofrito. To make the sauce, begin by adding olive oil to a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Generously season the short ribs with 1 tablespoon kosher salt and pepper. Once the oil is simmering hot, carefully add in the seasoned short ribs to brown. Add the sofrito into the pot to also brown.

Once the short ribs brown, tie the rest of the herbs together using kitchen twine and add to the pot with bay leaves. Add crushed tomatoes, beef broth into the pot with the browned short ribs. Stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to a low. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 2 1/2 – 3 hours, or until the short ribs are fallapart tender. If the ragu begins to reduce too much, add more broth.

FOR THE SHORT RIB RAGU TAGLIATELLE

To make the Tagliatelle, bring a l arge pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is cooked to al dente. Finish the short rib ragu sauce: Meanwhile, as the pasta boils, bring the braised short rib ragu up to a simmer. Stir in the heavy cream & parmesan cheese. Continue to simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally. Add the cooked pasta to the pot with the braised short rib ragu sauce, tossing to coat. The short rib ragu should evenly coat the pasta

THE SHE WORD LAUNCHES PATREON PAGE AND PARTNERSHIP WITH THE RICHMOND FOUNDATION

Since its launch in September 2022, The SHE Word podcast gathered over 1 million collective views, the podcast channel has rated in the top 10% of Spotify podcasts in the world, and tens of thousands of women have responded to the simple format of four women gathered around a kitchen table having ‘conversations that women rarely have, but really should’.

Some conversations have been more challenging than others, particularly when the show covers topics such as Mental Health, Body Image, Social Media, and more recently Women Surviving Relationship Trauma. Statistics differ on this topic, depending on country, and also depending on definition, but up to 36% of women experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact sexual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking. As The SHE Word heads towards its 3rd Season the team became aware that as a bright light was shone on these often-taboo topics, it was essential to offer support to the women affected by them. In June this year The SHE Word launched its Patreon Page and partnership with The Richmond Foundation to offer support and therapy to women who simply can’t afford it.

The Richmond Foundation was founded by Anthony Guillaumier who, in the 1980s, started becoming aware of the lack of community support for people with mental health problems. Mr Guillaumier noticed that some of his employees struggled with mental health issues but had no one to turn to. Since its inception hundreds of people every year with mental health problems - and their loved ones - make use of Richmond Foundation services. Richmond Foundation is a member of the Global Alliance of Mental Illness Advocacy Networks–Europe (GAMIAN-Europe), the European Anti-Poverty Network, the Malta Federations of NGOs and the Malta Health Network. Over the course of the first 26 shows of The SHE Word, women repeatedly contacted the show to share how desperately they wanted the guidance and support to make important life

changes but therapy was just not financially viable. Through the Patreon Page - www.patreon.com/TheSHEWord - The SHE Word provides subscribers with ‘first view content’, exclusive content, shows, blogs, exclusive partnership offers, events, live show participation and much more, and dedicates 50% of the Patreon Profits to enable the Richmond Foundation to provide essential support to women who otherwise may not be able to afford it.

Programme partners of The SHE Word have also taken the opportunity to support this cause, and longterm partner Gracy’s Arts and Supper Club in Valletta not only hosts Patreon Events, supports The SHE Word, but embraced the cause by offering its guests the option of donating €1 of the bill to the Richmond Foundation partnership. Gracy’s Arts and Supper Club is beautifully located on the edge of St George’s Square in Valletta and its Rooftop Garden Terrace enjoys views across the city and far beyond. For anyone who visits our capital regularly or is visiting for the first time, Gracy’s is an absolute must. Besides its exquisite menu created by renowned chef Tom Peters including the newly-launched summer series featuring sumptuous dishes such as ‘Raw Rossi Prawns, Citrus Fruits, Salted Sardines, Green Olives, Caperberries, Olive Oil’ or because of its outstanding heritage, beautiful interiors and incredible city vista, Gracy’s is committed to empowering women and making a real difference through The SHE Word and the Richmond Foundation. IL-BIZZILLA TALKS TO RANIERO FARRUGIA

MAINTENANCE CONTROL CENTRE ENGINEER

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT AIR MALTA AND IN WHAT ROLES?

I joined Air Malta in November 2022 as a Supervisor Engineer in the Maintenance Control Centre after spending 20 years with various maintenance providers and airlines.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

The interesting dynamic environment of an airline. Coordinating with various departments and stakeholders within the airline, to ensure a smooth and efficient running of the operation.

AND WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT?

The most challenging aspects are the changing priorities during the day and the troubleshooting process to identify and solve technical problems.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING IN YOUR FREE TIME? Spending time and going out with my family.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE EUROPEAN DESTINATION AND WHY?

Geneva and the surrounding regions. It is an all-round family destination enjoyable during any season. From exploring the old medieval city to the CERN laboratory, and from lake G eneva to the surrounding mountains.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION YOU HAVE VISITED AND WHY?

New Zealand, for its untouched scenery.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LANGUAGE?

Whilst English is my second language and we practice it every day, Italian is also a favourite language. This reminds me of my childh ood, arriving home from school and watching cartoons on Italian TV stations.

FAVOURITE MOVIE?

Any action movie with spectacular display of events. However, I also enjoy a good comedy movie.

FAVOURITE GENRE OF MUSIC? Classic Rock.

DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION? Japan.

WHERE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND VISITING WITHIN THE MALTESE ISLANDS?

I strongly recommend a visit to one of the gardens surrounding Valletta which are within walking distance from the centre. They provide a shady place as relief from the summer’s scorching heat, as well as a tranquil and peaceful haven, with breath-taking views all year round. To mention a few, there are the Argotti Botanical Gardens in Floriana, Hastings Gardens in Valletta, and the Msida Bastion Cemetery and Historic Garden.

PREFERRED MALTESE DISH?

Nothing beats my dad’s Timpana, which is baked macaroni in pastry.

FAVOURITE MALTESE EXPRESSION?

“Taqtax qalbek ”, which translated to English is “don’t cut your heart”. In Maltese it means “don’t give up”.

Over the years, Glitch Festival has quickly established itself as the biggest festival to visit Malta, as well as one of Europe’s major electronic festivals.

With 7 stages on offer, dancers are called to gather for a four-day journey driven by a carefully curated list of industry titans, master selectors, live acts & rising stars. From roaring rooftop pool parties to undercover cave raves and an unforgettably intimate Boiler Room stage, G litch Festival spaces are attentively arranged to provide festival goers with the ideal spots to l ose themselves in.

For their next edition, Glitch have announced no less than 68 acts, all heading to Malta for what promises to be a series of rhythmic adventures at the height of summer on the sun-soaked Mediterranean island.

Things will be kicking-off on Sunday 13th August with an explosive opening held right under the glorious fortifications of Valletta, a UNESCO world heritage gem, headlined by Helena Hauff, Hector Oaks and Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann.

The main festival will take place between the 14th and 15th August at Gianpula Village against a backdrop of the ancient medieval city of Mdina.

And finally, the 16th August brings the festival to an end with boat party summer-magic followed by a heartfelt closing party with DJ Heartstring, Narciss and Patrick Mas on, ensuring a perfect send-off.

USE OF PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD

T RANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided the device has 'Flight Mode' capability and that this is enabled. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off completely for the duration of the flight. Bluetooth wireless connectivity is allowed. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. The use of Wi-Fi with Flight Mode enabled is permitted on some of our aircraft that are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system. The Cabin Crew will make an announcement on aircraft that are so equipped, to inform you when Wi-Fi can be enabled on your PEDs.

NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)

These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.

ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?

Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.

I SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN …

Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.

LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS

Larger devices (e.g. laptops) may be used during boarding and during the flight, however they must be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. 'Flight Mode' must be enabled. Use of Bluetooth connectivity is allowed. Use of Wi-Fi under Flight Mode is allowed on some aircraft which are equipped with an inflight entertainment system.

CAN I USE HEADPHONES?

Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.

If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
