WANTED: YOUNG URBAN RIDERS Harley-Davidson Street™ model launches in Canada
DESPITE THE SLOW START TO OUR RIDING SEASON, we are now finally enjoying everything riding is meant to be and hopefully much more, well into the fall. For those keeping up with the latest and greatest news in the riding world, the whole landscape of the Harley-Davidson® Brand market is about to change with the launch of the Harley-Davidson Street™ model in Canada – the first all-new platform from Harley-Davidson Motor Company in 13 years and a conscious statement of intent into the acquisition of new, young, mainly urban Customers. The Harley-Davidson® Brand is already far and away the number one Brand for young Customers and outreach groups worldwide. Watch out in late 2014 for launch news on the HarleyDavidson Street™ model line of smaller-capacity, more accessible bikes. You can also expect to see a whole load of new customized variants of the Harley-Davidson Street™ model making a big impact in the upcoming year, and, of course, Harley-Davidson Street™ model purchasers will be swelling the ranks of H.O.G.® with new, enthusiastic, younger Customers of the Brand – essential to keep the organization fresh, forward looking, and catering to all Harley® motorcycle riders. You have also likely heard about Harley-Davidson announcing its “Project LiveWire” electric motorcycle (see page 66). Harley is not reinventing itself with an electric bike, but strategically evolving in a new global marketplace. The Motor Company has been planning and working to expand and diversify its Customer base, or “extend the Brand”, for well over a decade and the HarleyDavidson Street™ and LiveWire™ models are just the start of great new things yet to come! Of course we won’t forget the existing Customers and H.O.G.® members will certainly not be overlooked. They remain the core of the Harley® market and the bedrock on which it stands. There are many things that make H.O.G.® a unique organization, and sometimes it is easy to forget that it is predominately driven and managed almost entirely by volunteers – passionate members giving up their time, energy, and skills without the expectation of reward. There are certainly exciting times ahead – and it’s a great time to be a member of the world’s most successful owners group. See you on the road – whether you are on a Project RUSHMORE, a Big Twin, a Sportster®, a Harley-Davidson Street™, or test riding a LiveWire™ model! - Gina McNeil

ADVENTURES AWAIT
Question of the day: Who or what is your inspiration to ride?
Welcome to the Fall 2014 edition of HOG® Magazine Canada. In this edition, we have the pleasure of riding alongside our friend Dustin Woods as he discovers the Canadian West Coast (pages 22-27), relive some adventures via member submitted riding stories (pages 58-63), and sprinkled throughout the magazine, we reveal what’s new for motorcycle year 2015. I’m pleased to re-introduce the $100 ride challenge to all our Canadian H.O.G.® members. If you have a $100 riding story to share, we want to read it. If it appears in HOG® Magazine Canada, we’ll even take care of the expense – in the form of a $100 Harley-Davidson® gift card. We request that you keep your story to 750 words or less, including receipts of your expenses. We also need hi-resolution photos (minimum two MB files at 300 DPI) of your adventure, including a photo of you. Email your submission with “The $100 Challenge” as the subject line to editor@hogcanada.ca. Thank you to all who have submitted a response to my Question of the Day (Summer 2014 edition), the winner of the $100 Harley-Davidson® gift card is Gary Szilagyi from Pointe-Claire, QC. You may read his short story in the Front Shop, News section of the magazine (page13). The fall riding season may be a little cooler but nonetheless exciting as many new adventures await. See you on the road. Duarte Pita Editor, HOG ® Magazine Canada
BASIC BRAKING In the last edition of HOG® Magazine Canada there was an article on braking. After reading and rereading the article, I admit that I use all the basic steps in the “rookie” category, and I’ve been riding for more than 50 years. I don’t believe in separating rookies from road warriors. We’re all on a journey and learn something new every day! – Sent in via email
I want to thank you HOG® Magazine Canada for having the very informative “Ready, Set, Stop!” article in the Summer 2014 edition. It saved my skin. I read though the article and went to my local high school to practice the different types of braking. On my way home, I had someone cut me off. Had I not practiced the emergency stopping procedure a few minutes prior, I do not even want to imagine what could have happened. Please keep
putting these very informative articles in the magazine and always be aware of your surroundings when it comes to other vehicles on the road! - Jeff P., Regina, SK

and Willie G. at Dealer shows and Company events. They never seem to get a rest from the well-wishers and autograph seekers, yet I have never seen Nancy or Willie G. turn down any of these requests or show the slightest hint of annoyance
– even when you can tell they had a long day. I remain in awe of Nancy’s grace, dignity, and patience, and hope she and Willie G. can slow down a bit and enjoy life at a more relaxed pace in the future. – Sent in via email
I wanted to thank the people behind HOG® Magazine Canada for the great job they do on the quarterly publication. Outside of my family and bike, my H.O.G.® membership along with the magazine, comes in at a solid third spot. Always looking forward to receiving the magazine, reading it from cover to cover, and enjoying the great photos from my extended H.O.G.® family! - Sam Singh, Surrey, BC

H-D WORLD RIDE TOPS 17 MILLION KILOMETRES Seeking freedom and adventure, thousands of globe-trotting motorcycle riders ditched the daily grind and hit the road during the Harley-Davidson® World Ride on June 22-23. Together they logged 10,566,064 miles, or 17,004,389 kilometres, over the course of the two-day ride. Riders from more than 75 countries participated in the World Ride, with the ten highest mileage totals coming from the United States, Canada, Brazil, India, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and South Africa. After completing their rides, participants logged their mileage directly onto the World Ride website and shared riding stories and photographs on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #HDWorldRide. Participants could also download a certificate of participation after entering their mileage on the website. – Harley-Davidson Motor Company

CALIFORNIA POLICE TO REPLACE ® BMWs WITH H-D ® ELECTRA GLIDE MOTORCYCLES The California Highway Patrol is retiring some BMW motorcycles from its fleet and replacing them with Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Early last year, the state police agency started seeking bids for 400 new motorcycles to replace bikes aging out of its fleet. The contract was won by Oakland Harley-Davidson®, which sold the agency on a custom-fitted 2013 HarleyDavidson® Electra Glide® model. The Bay Area dealer upgraded the suspension, rewired the electrics, and added special police details, such as a
clipboard on the gas tank that is handy for writing tickets by the side of the road. The return to the Harley-Davidson® Brand ends a long hiatus for the CHP, which last made a deal to use the American Brand in 1989. The last of those machines was retired in 1997, a CHP spokesperson said. – LATimes.com
H-D MOTOR COMPANY SETS UP NEW DEALERSHIP IN NEW DELHI Harley-Davidson Motor Company has announced the opening of another dealership in the Delhi region by its partner, Capital Harley-Davidson®. This is their second dealership in Delhi following the Vasant Kunj showroom, and it claims to be
the largest one in North India. The showroom is located in Gurgaon, and covers a massive 18,000 square feet, including a massive Customer lounge and an event space that is expected to be an exciting connecting point for HarleyDavidson® motorcycle riders and enthusiasts. Also present is a service area consisting of 12 work bays equipped to carry out repairs, maintenance work, and customization. The dealership will exhibit 11 Harley-Davidson® models. Additionally, HarleyDavidson® accessories like riding gear, merchandise, etc. will be sold there. Currently, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company has 14 dealerships in India and plans are in the works to introduce more in the near future. – Overdrive.in

SKIN DEEP
Tattooing has been practiced for centuries throughout the world. The oldest evidence of tattooing on preserved skin dates back to 6000 BC on a South American mummy. Here is a look at some interesting Harley-Davidson® Brand influenced tattoos from a few of our Canadian H.O.G.® members.
Mario Coallier from Fort McMurray, AB. Here’s my freshly tattooed version of the H-D® #1 logo with my initials, not to be confused with Motor Cycle.
HOT WIRE For more than 100 years, the speed of a Harley-Davidson® engine (and just about every other motorcycle in the world) was controlled by a cable connected to the throttle control on the handgrip. It remains a good, simple technology that serves its purpose well. For the 2008 model year, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company introduced something even better on select motorcycles, starting with the Touring models: Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), sometimes called “throttle by wire”. With ETC, instead of pulling on a mechanical
cable, a twist of your right wrist sends electronic signals to a processor, which controls the engine speed. The two main components in the system are the throttle grip sensor and the throttle control actuator. The throttle grip itself is springloaded to return to idle position when released. The best thing about ETC is how little you have
to think about it. It’s just there when you need it. For more information about ETC, consult your Owner’s Manual. To make sure it keeps working the way it should, count on the Authorized Service technicians at your local H-D® Retailers and follow the recommended schedule maintenance program.
THE TIRE REVOLUTION
Thank you all for the various submissions to the previous Question of the Day – Summer 2014 edition of HOG® Magazine Canada. The selected winner of a $100 Harley-Davidson® gift card is Mr. Gary Szilagyi from Pointe-Claire, QC. His entry reads as follows: Gary Szilagyi from Pointe-Claire, QC. My passion for the Brand runs deep, and what better way to showcase my love of the Harley® Brand than a traditional Bar & Shield with wings.
Rene Plamondon from North Bay, ON. I love tattoos and I love being a H.O.G.® member, so why not combine the two? I’m not currently a life member, but with this tattoo, I might as well be!
“The revolution of my tires took me and my friend, Mike, all the way to the Tail of the Dragon on Hwy US-129 in North Carolina in June, 2014. We began our adventure on June 20, from Montréal, and made our way down through the very scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. We did most of the 650 kilometre roadway though the mountains encountering lots of wildlife and spectacular views. The highest elevation was near Maggie Valley, NC, at 5020 feet. The 10-day trip was our best to date.”

THE POPULAR SPRINT The Harley-Davidson® Sprint motorcycle was introduced to the market in 1961 as a result of a partnership venture between Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Aermacchi of Italy. The Italian-American hybrid was powered by a 250-cc horizontal four-stroke single engine and filled a gap in the HarleyDavidson® line at the time. Despite being decidedly unlike the traditional Harley® products of the time, the Sprint was quite popular with buyers.

t a time when most of my friends have been forced to sell their motorcycles in order to finance engagement rings, baby strollers, or patio furniture, my friend Grant is among my only contemporaries with the dedication and testicular fortitude to continue riding. Not only did he teach me how to play Wonderwall on the acoustic guitar when we were in the eighth grade, he also introduced me to the movie Easy Rider at the impressionable age

A definitive film that explores the rise and fall of the hippy movement and encapsulates the counter culture of the 1960s, it has become something of a cinematic bible for the motorcyclist community. I will admit that I found the concluding sequences rather traumatizing at the time and it took me years to understand the true depth of the political statements being made; however, I was immediately hooked – mesmerized by

the artistic cinematographic style, enchanted by the musical score, and utterly infatuated with the romance of escaping to the open road on two wheels. Grant and I have long talked about setting out on a similar adventure together, but work schedules, mortgages, girlfriends, and various other life obligations never allowed it until this summer when we both decided that we were in dire need of a vacation. Both working in fast-paced, high pressure, and high stress jobs, we were in search of balance, relaxation, and perspective, rather than ill-gotten riches, narcotics, or houses of ill repute. Whenever I’m arranging a trip, I do my best to incorporate an item on my bucket list that needs to be crossed off. Rather than head to a place like Las Vegas or down to New Orleans to find ourselves a couple of Mardi Gras Queens, we decided to visit the opposite end of the spectrum by exploring sleepy Vancouver Island to bask in the epic scenery and try our hand at surfing in Tofino. Grant rips around Vancouver on a nimble little British cafe racer these days, but we didn’t feel that it would best suit the
distances we’d be travelling over the course of a week-long excursion. Favouring function over the form of two wildly uncomfortable choppers like Captain America and Billy, we arranged for a couple of brand-new bikes from Deeley Harley-Davidson® Canada in Richmond. Unaccustomed to the larger stature of a V-Twin bagger, Grant opted to ride a Street Bob® model with optional soft saddle bags and removable windscreen, while I chose the perennially bestselling Street Glide® model that featured upgraded highway pegs and heated hand grips, both of which came in handy. Grant was initially skeptical about the H-D® motorcycle; when we stopped at the first traffic lights he lifted his visor and inquired in all seriousness, “is it supposed to be vibrating like this”? I laughed, assuring him all was normal and that the 103 C.I. V-Twin would simply take some getting used to after years of riding a smaller displacement parallel twin.
After months of planning and anticipation, the trip officially kicked off once the bikes were safely stowed aboard the Spirit of British Columbia at the B.C. Ferry terminal in Tsawwassen en route to Swartz Bay. Rather than being turned away by proprietors of seedy motels and forced to sleep on the hard ground outdoors, we were welcomed with open arms and treated like royalty at luxury establishments in

“We then headed west, past Port Alberni on to Tofino, which is without a doubt, the most enjoyable road I have ever ridden in my life.” an incredible meal, we walked over to Big Bad John’s (BBJ) to experience Victoria’s casual nightlife. The best way to explain BBJ is merely to convey that there are peanut shells on the floor and bras on the ceiling. Enough said. After touring around Dallas Road and having an amazing breakfast at Willie’s Bakery, we set off to the west side of the island to explore the Sooke Potholes, cooling off in one of the many refreshing glacier-fed watering holes – although without the company of cute, naked hippie chicks unfortunately. The skies then opened up for the first of many times over the course of the week. Vancouver Island’s temperate climate, which is free from humidity, makes it perfect for touring comfortably with full riding gear, but make sure to pack quality wet weather attire no matter what time of year you visit; you’ll need it. Visibility was limited as we crossed the Malahat en route to Parksville in the pouring rain, which was disappointing since the steep cliffs and dense forests create an incredible view on a clear day. Thankfully, once we arrived at The Beach Club Resort the bikes could dry off in the

underground parking lot and we could thaw out in our expansive rooms that featured all of the comforts of home and then some. My condo in Toronto doesn’t happen to have a king-sized bed, fireplace, or the spectacular ocean view. The next morning Grant was more complimentary of the Street Bob® motorcycle, “I feel like I’ve committed myself to one British lady, but now I’m on a week-long fling with an American woman and I’ll be honest, it actually feels pretty good.” Setting off for Campbell River, we made a stop at Shelter Point Distillery. One of only two single malt whiskey distilleries in Canada, Shelter Point is a truly professional operation that follows the Scottish tradition but with Vancouver Island water and ingredients. Living off the land and making their own destiny by following their collective vision, president Patrick Evans and project manager Jason Marinus are passionate about their craft and it shows. The first run of their whiskey is still undergoing the aging process in oak barrels, but vodka is available now, and it’s delicious. They provided us with a bottle after a tour of their establishment, which
we sampled once we arrived at the Tsa Kwa Luten Resort on Quadra Island. Taking the B.C. Ferry to Quadra Island is somewhat like taking a trip in a time machine. Touring the winding roads of the island, we witnessed countless hippies and well-preserved classic vehicles frozen in time. The pace of life is slower and less hectic on the island, which took some time for a couple of city slickers to become accustomed to, but it was also exactly what we needed. After spending the better part of the day exploring the island, we relaxed on the beach at the Rebecca Spit in the sunshine and then rode over to Quadra Island Golf to play a round. You may not associate golfing with a motorcycle ride but we’d heard the new course was impressive and should be experienced. We rented clubs and they didn’t mind that we played in our jeans and motorcycle boots. We did get a few strange looks from fellow golfers though. Signs around the island warning of wildlife aren’t just for decoration and should be heeded by adjusting speed and riding formations accordingly. We saw nearly a dozen deer on Quadra Island over the course of two days, one of which I would

have collided with had I not initiated an unexpected and immediate emergency manoeuvre after it bounded out directly into the middle of the road. Shaken but relieved, we arrived at the Gowlland Harbour Resort where the only thing better than the view was the meal, which once again was sourced from local farms and painstakingly prepared by owner/operator DeAnn Bremner. A former fishing lodge, the resort has been renovated and revamped to provide a relaxing luxurious getaway from civilization and some of the best meals you’ll ever consume; truly. Riding south towards Parksville, we then headed west past Alberni on to Tofino, which is without a doubt, the most enjoyable road I have ever ridden in my life. Measuring 163 kilometres, the longest east-west road on the island snakes maniacally up, down, and around with each unpredictable turn bringing distinctive scenery unlike what you’ve ever seen and the sweet smell of fresh air that is both vibrant and intoxicating. I felt genuinely sorry for the people sharing the road with us who were confined to four wheels and am shocked that the isolated outpost of Tofino
has managed to stay a sleepy little town. Soaked to the core after a long day of riding, we were greeted by the nearly embarrassingly attentive and welcoming staff at the Wickinnish Inn, a luxurious and opulent hotel with an amazing restaurant located right on the ocean and surrounded by rugged, pristine beauty of indescribable proportions. Sipping on a cold, delicious Hoppin’ Cretin IPA from the local Tofino Brewing Company, the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits as we enjoyed an amazing meal in The Pointe restaurant. The next day we checked into our own private condo at the Cox Bay Resort which featured ideal surf conditions right outside our door. Anna, our lovely and patient instructor from Bruhwiler’s Surf School (pretty much anyone who knows about surfing in Canada knows the owner of the school, pro surfer Raph Bruhwiler), gave us a gruelling three-hour lesson. I can’t say I’ve ever enjoyed something that I was so terrible at so much, but even after gulping gallons of ice cold salt water I did manage to get up a few times and was still smiling so much that my face hurt. One more bucket list item successfully crossed off. On the last day of our trip we once again traversed Highway 4 across the island to Departure Bay in Nanaimo to catch the B.C. Ferry to Horseshoe Bay. As we manoeuvred the bikes into a parking stall under Grant’s condo, he shut down the rumbling Street Bob® motorcycle and nodded in smiling approval, “I think I need to buy a Harley motorcycle.” Count him among the converted. We slept well, ate like kings, met plenty of friendly, genuine people, and witnessed some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. It certainly wasn’t the most wild or debauched ride two unmarried guys have ever embarked on. In reality, our expedition was definitively the antithesis of Easy Rider in many ways. Thankfully, I’ve got more items on my bucket list that need crossing off.

MOR E RU S H THE REDESIGNED ROAD GLIDE® MODEL LEADS THE PACK OF 2015 PROJECT RUSHMORE MODELS by Charles Plueddeman
After a one-year hiatus, the favourite Touring mount of non-conformists returns to the Harley-Davidson® line in 2015 with a fresh infusion of Project RUSHMORE DNA and an all-new frame-mounted fairing that delivers best-in-class aerodynamics. The fairing shape is evolved but unmistakably Road Glide® model in character. In fact, it’s more aggressive and menacing than ever, as the new Road Glide® motorcycle now prowls behind the searing glare of Dual Reflector Daymaker™ LED headlamps peering from below a drooping brow. Joining the Road Glide® model for 2015 is the new Road Glide® Special model, an “all the options” model loaded with premium suspension and Boom!™ Box infotainment upgrades. “The voice of the Customer drives Harley-Davidson product development,” said Michael Goche, Harley‑Davidson Motor Company motorcycle product planning manager, “and improved aero comfort was at the forefront of that feedback regarding the Road Glide [model]. We were able to start with a clean sheet of paper, apply lessons learned in designing the new bat wing fairing that debuted with Project RUSHMORE in 2014, and invest more time in virtual design and wind tunnel testing. The result is an amazing leap forward in

terms of comfort for the rider, with aero performance that’s unmatched in the category of premium Touring motorcycles.” Triple splitstream vents in the new Road Glide® fairing are engineered to direct airflow up and over the rider’s head, even with the compact Original Equipment windscreen, dramatically reducing head buffeting while still providing a comfortable flow of air around the rider. Goche said the new Road Glide® fairing was benchmarked against the best of the competition’s touring motorcycles, and in both objective and subjective testing, the Harley-Davidson® motorcycle provides superior aero performance. The collaboration between styling and engineering that produced the new Project RUSHMORE bat wing fairing was instructive for the team working on the Road Glide® fairing, according to HarleyDavidson Principal Stylist Brian Nelson, who led the team working on the fairing redesign project. “The biggest design challenge presented by the Road Glide fairing is its distance from the rider,” said Nelson. “Because it’s frame mounted, we need that distance to provide room to turn the handlebar, but that’s also a big low-pressure zone that creates a lot of turbulence. To move air above the rider’s helmet required three vents, with the two lower vents designed to lift the air flow. The shape and location of those lower vents proved to be critical and required a lot of fine-tuning.” The Styling department got first crack at the new design and gave the engineering group a shape that was intended to be more contemporary, while retaining the identity of the Road Glide® model.
30
“We felt we had more styling leeway with the Road Glide fairing than we did with the redesign of the bat wing fairing,” said Nelson. “The Road Glide look is more about attitude than tradition, and it has become especially popular with really radical customizers because they like the look and all the real estate the fairing offers for paint. We put up some design fences to maintain that Road Glide character and handed it off to Engineering.” The goal was to create a fairing that would deliver a “buffet-free” ride with a low windshield, said Nelson. “We joked that it would be easier to just get rid of the fairing,” Nelson recalled. “There are so many variables to consider, and often our first intuition was wrong.” Each concept the team explored was first created as a computerized surface model and then analyzed with Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software that simulates the interaction of liquids or gases – in this case, air – with surfaces. The Road Glide® model
teams analyzed dozens of shapes. Those that showed promise were converted to rapid prototypes with a 3D printer. “The creation of this fairing was accomplished in record time,” said Nelson. “Harley-Davidson has worked hard to accelerate its product-development process, and new tools like CFD and the use of 3D printing for prototyping are two examples of that effort.” Prototypes were tested by a HarleyDavidson Vehicle Dynamics team in a wind tunnel at Wichita State University to confirm the CFD data and fine-tune the aerodynamics. A real “rider” was on the motorcycle during the wind tunnel tests to provide subjective feedback, while pressure sensors on the fairing and the rider’s helmet provided objective data. As development continued, attention was paid to the smallest details. “The size and shape of each of the splitstream vents was optimized, even down to the shape and material of the duct as it passes through the fairing,” said Nelson. “We also had to test the fairing with the windshield options that would be offered and fine-tune the height of each.” The Road Glide® inner fairing was also restyled to give it a more contemporary look, and to accommodate the Boom!™ Box Infotainment System and Jukebox media compartment developed through Project RUSHMORE. The new fairing moves the dash surface two inches closer to the rider for an easier reach to the screen and

control buttons on each of the Boom!™ Box audio systems. Lighting performance was another top priority in voice of Customer research, and in that regard the new Road Glide® model doubles down with Dual Reflector Daymaker™ LED headlamps that combine cutting-edge style with brilliant white high- and low-beam power designed to provide outstanding roadway illumination. Compared to 2013 Road Glide® models, these new headlamps deliver improvements of up to 67 per cent in spread (light across the road) and 25 per cent in punch (light down the road). The light quality closely mimics that of natural daylight to further enhance visibility, and its bright-white colour is conspicuous in traffic. The new Road Glide® model also offers
improved rider ergonomics, thanks to a new handlebar. “The previous Road Glide bar put many riders in a sort of leaned-forward position,” said Goche, “and we’d noticed that many owners were changing the handlebar after purchasing a Road Glide [motorcycle]. This was another voice of the Customer opportunity. The new handlebar moves the hand controls back more than five inches and places the wrists in a more comfortable position. The result is a more relaxed rider posture that’s great for long riding stretches. And Harley-Davidson® Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories will still offer other
handlebars for those who prefer a different bend.” The 2015 Road Glide® model has the full menu of Project RUSHMORE performance, ergonomic, and styling updates that redefine and transform the look and feel of a Touring motorcyclist’s experience, and focus on Control, Style, Infotainment, and Feel. From the stout 49-mm forks and the High Output Twin Cam 103™ powertrain, the Enforcer cast-aluminum wheels and One-Touch saddlebag latches, to the improved instrument graphics and hand controls, the new Road Glide® model is thoroughly informed by Project RUSHMORE. HarleyDavidson® Smart Security System and Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS are options on the Road Glide® model. The new Road Glide® Special model comes Factoryequipped with select upgrades that enhance style and function, including the Boom!™ Box 6.5GT Infotainment System with GPS and touchscreen, Premium Ride handadjustable rear suspension, Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS, and H-D® Smart Security.

The Road Glide [model] has become a world-class Touring motorcycle that I think will impress any rider.”

Disregard for a moment that the new 2015 Harley-Davidson® Freewheeler™ model sits on three wheels. Enjoy it first for what it is, free of preconceptions. Let your eyes follow the curve of the Mini Ape handlebar, down to the slotted 5-spoke wheels, over the High Output Twin Cam 103™ engine, back along the lowprofile seat and trunk body, and off the ends of the bobtail fenders. It’s a sexy new cruiser, right? Maybe you’d call it a bobber. A cool, sleek-looking hot rod of a motorcycle – one that just happens to have one more wheel than most. Compared to the successful H-D® Tri Glide® model – a fully equipped touring vehicle – it’s a whole new kind of trike, says Rebecca Krueger, Motorcycle Product Planning Manager, for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “It looks sleeker and sportier, less intimidating, more confidence-inspiring,” she says. “That’s what our Customers have been telling us they want in a new trike. So that’s what we’re providing – at a price that will surprise a lot of would-be trike riders.” The most obvious difference is the absence of the iconic bat wing fairing in the front and the Tour-Pak® carrier in the back. The front-end looks and feels lighter, giving it nimbler handling and a sportier look. It’s also built with a smaller rider in mind, including features that put the controls closer to the rider and make it easier to ride. “It’s not only ‘cool for a trike’. It’s a very cool motorcycle that just happens to be on three wheels. It’s going to open up the trike option to a lot of riders who have never seriously considered it before.”

Now we can make the transition from Harley-Davidson Street to V-Rod [model] and back again in about five minutes.” The V-Rod® and Harley-Davidson Street™ models are built in batches to match orders, meaning that the team may start the day assembling V-Rod® models and then switch over to HarleyDavidson Street™ model production. Fasteners and other small parts are stored in bins along the line. As on the Dyna® and Sportster® model lines, large components, such as engines, tires mounted on wheels, tanks and fenders, and key sub-assemblies, are sequenced to production plans and arrive at the assembly line in a precise execution of lean manufacturing – when the bike with red fenders comes down the line, a worker turns and a red fuel tank is next on the rack; every time. HARD CORE The front end of the Kansas City plant is devoted to three manufacturing processes Harley-Davidson considers its core manufacturing competencies – forming sheet metal, welding frames, and surface finishing with paint and graphics. Often the most modern manufacturing technologies, such as laser trimming cells and robotic welders, are deployed side by side with hands-on craftsmanship that simply can’t be replaced by machines. Steel fenders and fuel tank shells are pressed from sheets of American-made steel under dies backed by up to 450 tons of pressure, then finished by computer-guided lasers that trim edges and cut holes with incredible speed and precision. After it has been robotically welded and finished, each fuel tank is checked for leaks by a worker who submerges it in a water tank and looks for bubbles – a procedure that seems low-tech but is generally foolproof. Frames are formed of pre-cut steel tubing and pre-welded sub-assemblies loaded into rotating fixtures that present the work to a series of robotic welders. At the end of the frame line, a journeyman welder inspects the integrity of each weld on every frame, ready to touch up if necessary. Frames and sheet metal parts converge at load stations for overhead conveyors that carry each into the paint facility located in an enclosed area in the centre of the plant. Frames are finished with a baked-on powdercoat. The sheet metal is sprayed and cured in an automated paint line that can apply 15 to 20 different colours, and can change colours in less than 60 seconds. The paint on each fender and fuel tank undergoes a final inspection under bright-white lights and the critical eyes of technicians trained to spot microscopic flaws that are buffed away to achieve the premium finish demanded by HarleyDavidson and its Customers.

The Electra Glide® model family of Harley-Davidson® Touring models – including the premium Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® and Ultra Limited – has a long and storied history. With their iconic bat wing fairing and unmatched long-haul prowess, they symbolize the freedom of the open road to riders around the world.
Now, with the introduction of the 2015 Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® Low and Ultra Limited Low models, that freedom is accessible to a wider range of riders – straight off the showroom floor. “Smaller riders can sometimes have a hard time manoeuvring these larger Touring bikes, or even reaching the ground with their feet and the controls with their hands,” says Rebecca Krueger, Motorcycle Product Planning Manager, for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “So they might have to put in a lot of effort, through the Retail Store or on their own, to make the vehicle fit them. “The concept behind the Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low and Ultra Limited Low [models] is to give these Customers a
42
ride-ready product. So when they walk into a Retail Store and fall in love with one of these bikes, they don’t have to wait to have the seat and the suspension lowered before they can ride it home.” VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER To the untrained eye, the Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® Low and Ultra Limited Low models look just like their taller counterparts, with all the same features and amenities to provide the same grand American touring experience. They don’t even have any special markings, so no one has to know you’re riding anything different. But both models include a number of carefully engineered “accommodations”
for smaller riders, all of which are the result of extensive Customer interviews and feedback. Some changes are simple common sense, others are more subtle and ingenious. A lot of research, engineering, Customer feedback, and confidential rider testing went into these new bikes, designed for anyone who lacks the confidence to ride a standard Touring model. Early indications are that the designers have hit their mark. “In pre-launch consumer testing, we got a lot of comments like, “This is awesome,” “The size of this bike doesn’t intimidate me anymore,” “I feel in control of it,” and things like that,” Krueger says. “I think these bikes are going to be extremely popular.”

REBECCA SAYS Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Product Planning Manager, Rebecca Krueger, on the features of the 2015 Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® Low and Ultra Limited Low models …
PREMIUM LOWERED FRONT AND REAR SUSPENSION Lowers the motorcycles by a full inch to put the rider closer to the ground. The lower centre-of-gravity improves low-speed manoeuvrability and makes it easier to lift off the side stand.
“ This is not simply a standard suspension that has been lowered, but a premium suspension, front and rear, designed and built with a lower profile.” NEW LOWER PROFILE SEAT Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® Low and Ultra Limited Low models have a seat height of 25.6 inches, giving them the lowest seat height available for both Harley-Davidson® and competitive Touring motorcycles.
“ This is a custom Super Reduced Reach seat with premium grand touring comfort. We spent a lot of time engineering different shapes and types of foam, so riders can ride for hours at a time in complete comfort.” ®
NEW PASSENGER FOOTBOARDS Passenger footboards and mounts have been redesigned to fold up tighter, allowing easier mobility and greater leg clearance when pushing the bike.
“ Increasing leg clearance helps riders use their larger muscle groups to manage these bikes more easily.” NEW REDUCED WIDTH PRIMARY HOUSING AND DERBY COVER
“ This is one of those things you might not think about. But it can make a big difference in how easily a rider can walk these bikes into a tight parking space or the garage.” JIFFY STAND LEG EXTENSION New toe tab extends to a position where the rider can more easily engage the sidestand.
NEW HANDLEBAR Pulled two inches back from the current Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® Low and Ultra Limited Low handlebar position to put hand controls closer to the rider.
REDUCED CLUTCH EFFORT New “Assist & Slip” (A&S) clutch is easier to pull in.
REDUCED DIAMETER GRIPS Narrow hand grips make the clutch and front brake levers easier to reach.
Overall width of the primary housing and derby cover have been reduced, allowing for greater leg clearance to the ground and controls.

GOING THE DISTANCE: TIPS FOR ENDURANCE RIDING Endurance rider Chris Carr offers advice for preparing for long distance riding.
Endurance rider Chris Carr has made a name for himself by riding very long distances in very short periods of time. In 2008, he held the record for a run from Dead Horse, Alaska to Key West, Florida, well within his grasp before mandatory hurricane evacuations in the Keys cut his trip short. Carr also successfully completed the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge, an endurance run from Key West, Florida, to Homer, Alaska, on a Harley-Davidson® XR1200X™ – not exactly your ideal touring motorcycle! Chances are, most of us are never going to race across the far reaches of the North American continent. Nonetheless, there is much to be learned from Carr’s adventures that can benefit us mere mortals – even if your idea of an “endurance” ride might simply mean having to gas up more than once in the same day. Here, Carr offers us some helpful tips for prolonging your time in the saddle. Serious saddle time, riding 18, 24, or even 30 hours straight is not for everyone. In fact, I don’t even recommend it, except under very special circumstances, and following a lot of training and preparation. But that’s a typical day in the saddle for me when I’m in the midst of an endurance ride challenge. Notice that I referred to my rides in terms of hours, not miles. When most people talk about their longest ride in a day they’ll say they rode 800, 1,000, 1,200 kilometres ... or whatever, and that’s fine. But what makes a ride challenging has more to do with time spent than miles covered, because riding 50 kilometres through a congested city at rush hour can be far more fatiguing than riding, say, 140 kilometres on the open road – and it may well take the same amount of time! That speaks directly to good planning, which is one of the most important aspects of a successful long-distance ride – even if you’re not trying to break a record.
46
PLANNING When I rode from Dead Horse to Key West, I knew in advance every place I was going to stop for gas along the way, and from that you can infer that I also knew my precise route. I also timed my riding to avoid rush-hour riding in urban areas. That sort of attention to detail may seem extreme, but a practical application might be this: if you’re planning to stop for the night in a city notorious for bad traffic, find a hotel on the far side of town. If it’s late, it may be tempting to stop on the near side, but you’ll regret that decision in the morning when you’re faced with riding through the city in rush hour. Better to breeze through the night before and breeze out again in the morning. In general, even though it can be fun to explore, if your goal is to cover a lot of ground it’s best to have your route nailed down as much as possible ahead of time. GPS is a wonderful tool – I use it whenever possible (and when allowed by the rules of the competition I may be riding in). After all, getting lost just slows you down. PACKING Another big question when faced with a long-distance tour is what to pack. Contrary to what you might think, I actually pack very light
hog® magazine canada
Backshop.indd 46
8/20/14 9:00 AM
for long-distance rides. While it’s smart for most people to pack a few spare parts and supplies, I don’t when I’m competing. But if you’re riding just for pleasure, it certainly makes sense to be prepared for an emergency with a basic tool kit. I also don’t pack as much clothing or gear as you might think. Since I don’t stop a lot, I don’t change clothes very often (if ever!) so there’s really no need. But I do make sure I have several pairs of gloves of varying weights, and wear clothing that breathes well – that is, polyester-type materials that take moisture away from your body. That’s one of the biggest mistakes I saw people making at the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge: over-packing. Over-packing slows you down by making it harder to unload and reload – and find stuff you need quickly. Making the bike heavier than it needs to be will also negatively affect your fuel economy. THE MOTORCYCLE Many people are surprised to learn that the bikes I ride in my endurance challenges are pretty close to stock: I don’t use a lot of accessories. The main reason is that more accessories means more things that can break – and it’s also more taxing on the battery and electrical system, especially when the bike is running for so many hours straight. One concession I do make is to be sure the bike has a good, powerful headlight. This is because I do a lot of my riding at night, and I want to make sure I can see as far ahead as possible, and be seen easily as well. Riding at night – especially when it’s hot – is easier on both bike and rider, and traffic is usually lighter, which makes for easier going. It’s important to balance that, however, with the relative safety of riding in daylight, as well as your desire to watch the passing scenery. Another important consideration is a good seat. For many people, especially on a Harley-Davidson® Touring model, the stock seat is just fine. But Harley-Davidson Motor Company also offers a wide variety of custom seats. Finding one that fits your backside well and suits your riding style is important when eating up the miles. Wind protection – a good windshield or fairing – is also crucial for longdistance success. While it can be very invigorating to ride with your face in the wind, hour after hour of riding this way can be brutal on your face and neck. Another key to is to shift your position from time to time. Cruise control or a throttle lock allows you to relax your hands more, and highway pegs give you more flexibility in your leg position, and also let you shift your weight in the seat more easily. NUTRITION AND HYDRATION An often-overlooked aspect of long distance riding is your body. In fact, it’s one of the most common “rookie mistakes” I see: not being mentally and physically ready to take on a long-distance ride. The first step is to be in reasonably good physical shape. The healthier you are, the better your body will respond to the stresses you subject it to on a long ride. And that means eating right, both in general and during the ride. I don’t like to stop to eat while I’m riding, but I keep a lot of high-energy foods with me on the bike. One favourite is fortified milk or those gel packs that runners use. I also like to
“LISTEN TO ADVICE FROM MORE EXPERIENCED RIDERS AND LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES – AND YOUR SUCCESSES!”
mix sports drink powder into bottled water at gas stops. And while a lot of riders rely on energy drinks, caffeine or other stimulants, I avoid stimulants completely. I find my mind stays clearer and sharper this way, and I never become dependent on them. PASSING THE TIME One final challenge is keeping your mind occupied for hours at a time. As exciting as it is to ride a motorcycle, there are times on long trips when you just get bored. I personally find there’s a bit of a life cycle to my mental state. I start out invigorated, and then after a time I hit a bit of a wall, where I start to feel I can’t ride any farther. But once I push through that, I catch a second or even third wind and am good to go for hours more. Listening to music on my MP3 player has become a big help for getting through those rough stretches. Other times, I simply try to stay focused on the goal I’m trying to achieve – on wanting to not disappoint my friends, family, and other supporters. Or I’ll actively engage with my surroundings and try to find something interesting around me to think about and focus on. Occasionally, I’ll get into sort of a Zen state while riding. That is, I’ll get in a zone where my mind will drift off and take me somewhere completely away from my ride. I can’t say this is the safest mental approach, but it certainly helps the hours slip by quickly. GETTING STARTED My final piece of advice is simply to start slowly! If you’re not used to taking long trips, or spending long days in the saddle, work your way up to it. Start with shorter trips with shorter days and then gradually extend your rides as you start to get more comfortable. Listen to advice from more experienced riders and learn from your mistakes – and your successes! Keep your goals reasonable, and before you know it you’ll be eating up the miles like a professional – and maybe even setting your own personal endurance records in the process!

TAKE THE MYSTERY OUT OF MAINTENANCE By Dan Lesnock – Technical Consultant
With the introduction of the redesigned Harley-Davidson® Project RUSHMORE Touring platform comes a lot of changes to make a motorcycle more robust in almost every way.
The Project RUSHMORE series comes with reengineered forks, steering head bearings, and triple trees with larger 49 mm fork tubes to increase the stability and handling characteristics. There is also the new 103 ci high-output engine, which delivers around six per cent more power than previous models. With all these great enhancements when it comes to handling and performance, new rubber was needed. Harley-Davidson Motor Company and Dunlop have created a new tire specifically for the Touring models – it’s very important when it comes time to replace the rubber on your pride and joy that you do so with the OEM recommended tires, as these have been tested and engineered to meet the needs of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles.

HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE TIPS FOR MAINTAINING YOUR TIRES:
CHECK THE TIRE CONDITION EVERY TIME YOU RIDE.
CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK.
CLEAN THE TIRES WITH RECOMMENDED CLEANERS.
» NOTE: Proper tire maintenance is the responsibility of the rider, and failing to maintain your tires correctly can result in poor handling, poor fuel economy, and also premature wear of the tires. Please keep your rubber maintained and inflated properly for many kilometres of enjoyable riding. Is there a subject you would like to see covered in Tech Tips? Send your suggestion to: editor@hogcanada.ca.
DO NOT APPLY A COATING TO ENHANCE THE LOOK OF THE TIRES.

TRIPLE VENT SYSTEM™ JACKETS Created as part of the Project RUSHMORE Touring development program, Harley-Davidson Motor Company has added two new styles to its Triple Vent System™ jacket range – Passing Link for men and Waterproof Textile for women. Designed to enhance riding comfort and your Harley-Davidson® Touring experience (and that of your passengers of course)! The Triple Vent System™ also embraces the appeal of the classic Harley® leather jacket by offering an authentic style intrinsic to the H-D® MotorClothes® Brand. Triple Vent System™ technology helps harness a greater airflow for riders on Harley-Davidson® Touring models and Harley-Davidson® motorcycles equipped with a fairing or windshield through three zippered vents placed on each side of the jacket. Additionally, “stayopen” snap tabs allow for extrawide vent openings, which provide unrestricted airflow for riders, even when riding with passengers and backrests. Ideal for those sweltering summer rides. Staying cool in idle traffic has also been enhanced by the Triple Vent System™ tiered vent structure, which has the leading vent located lowest and each subsequent vent extending higher onto the jacket sides. The Triple Vent System™ technology is currently available in four styles of jacket for men and two for women. Each are categorized within feature and price brackets to suit your individual needs. RIDE IN CONFIDENCE … and arrive looking great with new Harley-Davidson® Performance riding jeans.
The all-new range of Performance riding jeans is designed to give the best of both worlds: uncompromising safety performance and the latest fashions. The denim is high-tech on the inside and pure style on the outside. This is gear you can wear when you’re riding, and when you get there. With five years of development behind them, Harley-Davidson® Performance riding jeans are the most technically advanced motorcycle jeans ever made. It’s a big claim, but we mean it. We’ve taken top-quality denim and equipped it with ROOMOTO® lining – a unique knitted mesh of the world’s toughest fibres. The result: jeans that let your body breathe, keep you cool, and also offer twice the abrasion resistance of other riding jeans. All this – and they’re half the weight of traditional riding jeans. The Harley-Davidson® Brand has a style to suit any rider, from partially lined original and Genuine Performance riding jeans to the fully lined FXRG® Performance riding jean.
ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE
Harley-Davidson® FXRG® Performance riding jeans are the only motorcycle jeans in the world to have received CE level two approval. Woven kevlar lasts 1.5 seconds in “abrasion” tests – and our FXRG® Performance riding jeans last 7.46 seconds. This is serious stuff when it comes to your safety. In fact these jeans perform so well, they actually perform to the same standards as race leathers! FXRG® denim comes with reinforced, triple stitched, and chain stitched seams. Jeans are fully lined for extra protection and free of metal rivets for extra safety. Additional extra-wide belt loops mean that you can keep other riding gear tucked in, while coin pockets are cut larger so you can access them with a gloved hand. A neat idea! FXRG® Performance riding jeans really are the ultimate in riding protection.

The proof is in the test. For riding jeans to receive any type of CE approval, the clothing has to endure a series of tests to measure abrasion resistance, tensile strength, durability, and resistance to penetration. Normal fabric will tear in less than half a second. To reach CE level two, it has to survive the testing onslaught for a punishing seven seconds. Harley® FXRG® Performance riding jeans are the only riding jeans in the world to have achieved CE level two!

A RIDER’S MUSE
Canadian musician writes his songs, one kilometre at a time. Words and photography by Dean Batstone.
A
s a Canadian singer and songwriter for 30-plus years, as well as a H.O.G.® member for over 14 years and motorcycle rider since I was 12 years old, I’ve owned many different brands and styles over the years, only purchasing my first HarleyDavidson® motorcycle about nine years ago, a well-used 1975 H-D® FXE 1200 model. The bike had been chopped and modified in the early 1980s and then ridden hard and long by a friend of mine who was
58
more about the motorcycle lifestyle than the maintenance of the motorcycle. Knowing that his ride was getting tired and in need of a full rebuild, he opted for a 2006 H-D® Road Glide® model, setting the stage for the timely phone call where he offered me his worn, old shovelhead, and – most importantly at the time – a place to work on it, at a price that even a full-time road musician could afford. Why offer me his vintage bike? Suffice it to say that we’d
actually become friends over music and motorcycles, and well before I owned this old ride, I’d established a relationship with it. My friend was the kind of Harley-Davidson® motorcycle rider that would pass his keys to almost anyone, even someone he hardly knew. He only needed to sense that they had enough experience to ride and enough interest to be curious about the H-D® Brand. I was one of those people, and his generosity let me borrow this ’75 for a least a couple of significant rides
each year over a period of more than a decade as our friendship grew. My career kept me busy and travelling extensively, but the birth of my daughter gave way to the subsequent decision to stay closer to home, so when the call to own this old shovelhead came, I was already primed. There was also the music, which is a big part of my long story and a thread that weaves in and out of many of my experiences, tying them together. Even before I finally bought my first HarleyDavidson® motorcycle, the evidence that the lifestyle had already found its way into my subconscious mind was evident in many of the songs I wrote. I was so excited I could hardly contain myself. I worked on this ride in my spare time along with my friend Barry – who barked tips from beside the wood stove in his father’s work shop – and his dad, Bert, who wandered in from time to time over the next two months to share stories of his riding days over a coffee. It felt so good to now own a small part of the Harley-Davidson® story that was so clearly an integral element in the bond between this father and son. Bert and Lena, Barry’s mom, had owned H-D® motorcycles exclusively in their younger years living in Toronto, Ontario, and stories and photos bore witness to their passion for riding and loyalty to the Brand. Their son had obviously been raised on the HarleyDavidson® Brand. I had a vision, of course, for my first H-D® motorcycle, but
hog magazine canada ®
Backshop.indd 58

first I had to strip it to the frame and rebuild almost everything. I messed up a few times and learned as I went, but I was filled with passion and not just a little romance about my riding future. Bert’s old shed provided me with the space, as I did not have any in my small Eastern Ontario home. My friend’s dad has since passed on and his mom is fading in a long-term care facility. I had the honour of riding in a small Harley-Davidson® honour guard to Bert’s final resting place on my ’75 and performing a song during the commemorative service. I often reflect with fondness on the time I shared with this generation of Harley® motorcycle lovers. A heartfelt thank you for the memories. I still own my shovelhead some nine years later and have gone through a couple of rebuilds to the drivetrain and many changes in the appearance, but mostly I’ve continued an endearing relationship with it and the Brand that will see me into my later years with more joy than I can even describe in this longwinded exposé. By 2007, I was a full-time road musician, touring mostly in Canada, but a sort of rebirth in my career began to happen south of the border. As my friends can attest to, I’m a vocal fan of the H-D® Brand, not just through my music, but in conversation in many facets of my life, and I can proudly claim I’ve influenced several friends into braving the world of motorcycling by either switching to a Harley® bike or simply starting out on one. That same year, a new woman in my life – with a desire to get on the back of a ride that was at least somewhat more
forgiving than my shovelhead – led me to purchase my second H-D® motorcycle, a used 1996 H-D® Heritage Softail™ Classic model, from my local Retailer,
Once again, there was Harley-Davidson® Brand influenced content on my new record, a pattern that was starting to define my music,
Freedom Harley-Davidson® of Ottawa. While still riding my shovelhead as my “solo ride”, we managed to run the odometer on the H-D® Heritage Softail™ Classic motorcycle over 10,000 kilometres in the first year of ownership. But before too long I was lured by the call of a 2004 H-D® Road King® Custom motorcycle that came in on a trade at the same Retailer, and so we moved up into a full Touring-framed ride and I lovingly passed the Heritage Softail™ Classic bike on to my friend, who still rides it to this day.
along with the storytelling nature of some of my writing and the growing content-laced imagery of things I’d seen both while riding or living on my tour bus. Speaking of touring and my bus, in truth, I’ve had several different touring vehicles over the course of my career, but as with my passion for vintage Harley® motorcycles, my taste in coaches has always been towards the vintage as well. Case in point is the 1973 MCI MC7 I currently tour in. I set off on a “break even” proposition in 2011, aimed at avoiding winter and fitting some riding in as well as at promoting my new song on American radio. Rolling down the highway surrounded by 40 feet of stainless steel and aluminum towing a Harley® trailer may not
be the best carbon footprint in America, but I was saving on hotels, air fare, and meals, so I figured that the lifestyle was the reward. It was. During this period I wrote many of the songs that would eventually make up my new album, and I also met some amazing people and rode in some unforgettable locations. By 2012, things were a bit of a struggle for me financially, and in order to maintain touring and upgrade my coach, I decided I had to sell my Road King® motorcycle. It went to a happy third owner this past spring, after I’d put over 40,000 km on it since its purchase. The smooth Twin Cam 88® engine was still running strong and had never been opened. As always, I still had my shovelhead, but as I was now down to one ride again, I needed to ensure it continued to be reliable. I rebuilt the motor this past spring, this time with the help of a fully licensed H-D® mechanic at his shop near Renfrew, Ontario, which is adorned with all of his certifications from the Harley® training facilities in Milwaukee that he’s attended over the years. We also morphed the bike’s appearance, moving towards some iconic vision in my mind of how my perfect, personal Harley® motorcycle should look. So now I’ve come full circle, riding my shovelhead daily and still recording new songs. I’m excited about the new H-D® bikes and can’t wait to someday own a Softail® Slim™ model and a good two-up ride as well. Hope to see you on the road someday. Ride hard, ride safe; from one equally hard working, hard writing, hard riding, lifetime Harley® motorcycle fan.

HOLY ROADS
A trip from Red Deer to Texas on a motorcycle nicknamed “Jesus”. By Jim Boyd & Gwen Dial “Would you like to see Ray Wylie Hubbard?” my friend Gwen asked me one evening. She knows that he is one of my favourite artists, so naturally I said yes. She then told me where he was playing and that became the springboard that launched our adventure. I should have mentioned that Ray was going to be playing in Winnipeg, MB, around 1,100 kilometres away, but we went to Texas instead, some 9,100 km in distance. We made an initial stop in Brooks, AB, to meet-up with our travel partners, Steve and Brenda Jones. Heading south, we rode to King Mountain, a road alongside Belt Creek, MT. There was snow along the
60
highway, but the temperatures were warm and we made it as far as Billings, MT. We managed to book a bike service at Beartooth Harley-Davidson® the next morning (didn’t get it done before we left home), and were impressed with the friendly service we received there. Driving along the interstate, we noticed a sign for Buffalo, Wyoming. We knew there had to be a bar worth visiting in a place named Buffalo – and we were right. We pulled into town and asked a fellow mowing his lawn where we could find an old-time saloon. He pointed us downtown to the Occidental Hotel. It was like walking back in time 100 years – right down
to every architectural detail. Our barmaid was a pleasant young lady, very attentive to our needs while we listened to a fellow who literally walked in off the street and started playing the piano. We would have loved to have stayed longer but the road was calling. We hope to make it back there in the near future so that we can revel in times gone by. We made it to Cheyenne, WY, that day, after a long day of travel in the heat. The next day was intensely hot! Being from Alberta, we are not accustomed to 40 degrees Celsius as a norm. We rode Interstate 25 through Denver, CO, without any issues, but rush hour traffic is like riding a bull at
the Calgary Stampede for eight seconds – get out of position and you could be in real trouble, fast. Gwen did notice the outlet mall along the highway but that’s one of the benefits of travelling on a motorcycle – not much room for shopping although shipping is always an option. We rode on to Walsenburg, CO. Walsenburg is an old town that used to be a booming place. The people that we met there never felt the need to leave. In fact, the ones we met never did. It actually took a tourist to get us headed on a great road going west. We did ask for directions from locals, but unfortunately, they were unaware of the beautiful roads scattered just outside their little town. As we rode west on U.S. Highway 160 through the La Veta Pass with an elevation of 9,413 feet above sea level

toward Fort Garland, the wind came up with a force, but we held fast and continued our journey. We then turned south to Taos, NM, with our sights set on Santa Fe, where we had planned to spend a few days of rest. As we pulled into Taos and figured we still had an hour to ride, we decided to stop for a stretch break. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the wind pickedup force to the point where we decided it would be safer for us to spend the night. As a tourist passing through, Taos really didn’t look like much of a town, but that sentiment was soon altered. This impromptu stop turned out to be one of the greatest along this journey. As soon as we got a room and settled in, the wind died down and the town came back to a peaceful calm. We meandered down to the old town square for dinner and margaritas; this is where we learned about the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway – an 83-mile loop ride around Taos; an amazing ride through mountains, valleys, mesa, and national forest leading to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park in Angel Fire, NM. It was difficult to walk through the memorial without shedding a few tears for all those who perished in the Vietnam War. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the vicinity. Also close by is Cimarron, NM, where you will find the St. James Hotel. To say we like old historic buildings and the stories that come with them is an understatement. The St. James Hotel has many of these stories to tell, from bullet holes in the ceilings to the pictures hanging on the walls. The Enchanted Circle was not planned and really did turn out to be a great and memorable ride. It will always remain a
highlight of our trip. The people in this area are salt-of-the-earth, good people. We asked a man for directions at a gas station; he simply said “follow me”, and took us off the interstate, through a beautiful little road into old Santa Fe. He bought us a map, toured us through the square and suggested a motel. Those are people that make the journey a memorable trip. Had we made better plans and got a map of Santa Fe beforehand, we would never have encountered such a wonderful soul. So we had no map, stopped at a service station that did not sell them, and could not ask for anything more. It took six fairly easy riding days to make it to San Antonio, TX. Again, with no plan as to where we were going, we took the exit off the highway and headed downtown. We pulled into a parking lot to decide where to stay and four bikers were just getting on their bikes. With smiles and a thumbs up, they gave us directions to a motel in the most perfect location. We strolled onto the River Walk, where to no one’s surprise we stopped for a drink and were given friendly directions. We stopped to take in the Alamo on the way back. We made it to Rockport Beach by early afternoon and checked into a room, took a shower, and then rode around and found a pub for something to eat and – you guessed it – a cold drink. We spoke to our server about who we should talk to in order to get an autograph from Ray Wylie Hubbard, and she gave us the name of the concert promoter, Tommy Moore. We spent two days at the Rockport Beach Music Festival and thanks to Mr. Moore, were able to meet and greet Ray Wylie Hubbard and
Gary P. Nunn for an autograph and souvenir photos. We had a few business stops to make on the way back, so we headed towards Houston. We stayed one night in the city of Kemah and then stopped briefly in Pasadena, both in Texas. We were looking for a Harley-Davidson® dealership but found Pop’s Ice House instead, where the drinks were cold and the people friendly – but that’s what we have come to expect. Wish we had time to stay longer but maybe we’ll make it back there someday. On to Paris, Hugo, and
Durant and then north toward Lawton, OK. The storm warnings were coming in over the radio and the sky was getting dark, but we made it into town before the skies opened up and the rain came at us sideways. We counted our blessings that we were off the highway before it hit. That bit of weather in Lawton and once more in Oakley, KS, was the only rain we encountered in the U.S. on our journey. We came back home by way of Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. We did stop at Sturgis and took a ride through the Black Hills. The monuments of Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse are worth going to see and at this time of year there aren’t thousands of bikers to contend with. We made it home safely, with the trip meter at 9,100 kilometres. We rode through the countryside and met some very interesting people along the way. This trip was not our first, and certainly will not be our last, but we do hope that the journeys of the future are like this one, where people are friendly and the scenery is fantastic.

REBUILDING A DREAM
Lake Huron loop becomes an adventure to rekindle an Ontario rider’s spirit and love of riding. By Brenda Arnold
T
hirty years ago, I rebuilt a 1972 Harley-Davidson® Sportster® motorcycle with my dad. I purchased this ride for $1,500 and it came in four milk crates, plus the frame. After a couple of years of riding, I was forced to sell it and didn’t ride again for the next 25 years. Enter 2013 when I met the ride of my dreams and even cried when I saw her: a 2002 H-D® Heritage Softail™ Classic motorcycle, completely customized to resemble an early 1960s motorcycle along with a thunderbird blue paint scheme. I managed to gather enough funds, re-acquire my licence, and found a proper place to park her. To me, buying this bike meant getting my life back. I always had that one regret about selling my Sportster® bike and I never thought I’d be able to change that regret into a dream. I rode over 7,000 kilometres last summer. It was the happiest summer of my life (other than when my daughter was born ... and my three grandchildren)! I decided to take a road trip around Lake Huron in August of that year. I crossed into the U.S. at Port Huron, Michigan, and rode up the Lake Huron coast, then onto I-75, stopping in Roscommon to see my dear friends perform in The Official Blues Brothers Revue. I had ridden just shy of 500 km and was hot, tired, and shaking from
62
I ALWAYS HAD THAT ONE REGRET ABOUT SELLING MY SPORTY AND I NEVER THOUGHT I’D BE ABLE TO CHANGE THAT REGRET INTO A DREAM. the ride when I walked into the Green Room and surprised everybody; they couldn’t believe I rode in from London, Ontario. The show was awesome, as always, and we all caught up on old times well into the night. The next day, I crossed Northern Michigan and headed to Traverse City. I met a lot of bikers on the way – all awesome people from all parts of the country. One couple told me about the Tunnel of Trees Scenic Heritage Route, which
I had to see and ride. Since my only mission was to ride around Lake Huron, I headed for Highway M-119. I stayed in Petoskey, Michigan, for the night and the next day rode through the Tunnel of Trees Scenic Heritage Route. Afterwards, I went over to the Legs Inn restaurant for lunch, a “must stop”, with new friends. It was hot but comfortable outside and the food was incredible – homemade Polish cuisine. The view over Lake Michigan made
me feel like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. We said our goodbyes and I headed up the Lake Michigan coast and crossed over to Mackinaw City. My mom had told me about Mackinac Island a long time ago and that if I ever had the chance to go I should take it. I left my bike under a street lamp beside the guard house at the Arnold Line ferry, jumped on the boat and never looked back; I just trusted the wonderful folks there. I spent the night on the island and when I got back to the mainland the next day, there she was, waiting for the next ride. The next day was spent riding from Mackinaw City to Manitoulin Island; all in all about an eight-hour ride (normally a five-hour ride). Every gas stop along the way was a mandatory stop, each lasting about an hour with the riders congregating for a visit

SINCE I’VE BEEN RIDING AGAIN, MY LIFE HAS CHANGED ... I’M BACK TO MYSELF. and sharing personal riding stories. What a beautiful ride through the mountain area of Highway 6 onto Manitoulin Island, where I spent three days in a very cool hostel in Providence Bay. I caught the ferry to Tobermory, Ontario, and my last day was spent riding along the shore of Lake Huron and then towards home through London. Coming home was bittersweet;
I didn’t want it to be over but I was so ecstatic about the whole journey. When I started out on this small adventure, I didn’t think much of riding 2,000 km alone. About three days into my journey, it hit me when I’d talk to a friendly stranger and they’d ask why I was riding alone – I started to wonder how many other bikers ride solo. I know I gave some people a chuckle and I also hope I gave some people
the courage to take on their own life’s challenges. Riding through Michigan with an Ontario licence plate also made some heads turn. I spoke with many women at stop lights – they’d give me a thumb’s up or tell me how beautiful my bike was. As my dear friend says, “you could be a monkey riding that bike and they’ll only notice the bike”. It really is a nice bike, but I
don’t take any credit for its appearance – I purchased it exactly as it sits today; all I do is ride the heck out of it! Since I’ve been riding again, my life has changed. Not just because of the bike, but because biking itself is something I’ve loved since I was a teenager. I’m back to myself. I was away for a long time, but I’m back, with confidence, and it’s fantastic!

t is sometimes reported that the original Mr. Harley and three Mr. Davidsons said they started HarleyDavidson Motor Company to “take the work out of bicycling”. Though true, this statement is sometimes misconstrued to suggest that Harley-Davidson started as a bicycle company. This is simply not the case. What is undeniably true, however, is that bicycles had a major influence on the Motor Company during those early years. The very first vehicles, after all, were essentially motor-driven bicycles. Despite their best efforts to promote a better way to travel on two wheels, standard bicycles continued to grow in popularity in the 1910s. With an eye on introducing new markets to motorcycling, Harley-Davidson decided to sell its own Brand of bicycle, through an unlikely partnership with a sewing machine company. THE RISE OF LEISURE At the turn of the century, increasing numbers of people turned to bicycles as a primary means of getting around. But over the next two decades, motorcycles and cars increased in popularity. Since both of them provided longer range, better speed, and more practicality, the bicycle – which had been a popular means of shortdistance transportation – took on a new role. A bicycle sales boom in the 1910s brought with it new potential for leisure-time riding. With its lower price and ease of use, it could also serve as a
64
Above: Four-page colour advertisements recruiting new dealers went in motorcycle and bicycle magazines heralding the 1920 bicycle offering. The ad claimed that many existing H-D® dealers were covering their overhead with bicycle sales alone. means for introducing younger people to the Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. These conditions led to the signing of a deal with Davis Sewing Machine Co. of Dayton, Ohio, in the autumn of 1916. With the rise of the motorcycle in the 1900s and 1910s, Davis already had its own motorcycle brand, the Dayton, which capitalized on the established Dayton bicycles, going back to 1892. (The Dayton bicycle evolved into the Huffman and later Huffy brand). Beginning in 1917, bicycles were sold mainly through Harley-Davidson® motorcycle dealerships, though bicycle
dealers filled that role in smaller towns that had limited access to H-D® dealers. Bicycle names included the “Diamond Frame”, “Ladies Standard”, “Boy Scout”, “Girls Juvenile”, “The Racer”, and “717 Special.” The “Boy Scout” was ultimately renamed, perhaps due to objections from the Boy Scouts of America. The “Motorcyke” was the most reminiscent of a motorcycle, with a metal tank situated along the two top tubes in the frame. But this tank held a different power source: batteries for the headlamp. The health benefits were
obvious: “Muscles will harden, colour will come back to the cheeks, insomnia will be a thing of the past. Legs, back, arms, and brain are better for it.” But the health benefits did not stop there. Ads from 1920 also referred to the streetcar as “germ laden”. With the catastrophic influenza pandemic of 1918 still fresh in America’s memory, the bicycle kept the rider healthy in more ways than one. SHORT-TERM SUCCESS Sales were a blip on the H-D® radar by 1920, the peak year, at only about four per cent of overall domestic sales. It is also believed that sales never matched those of competitors due to limitations of the motorcycle dealer network. As an epilogue to the short-lived bicycle line, Harley-Davidson learned in 1922 that Davis Sewing Machine Co. continued to produce and sell bicycles with the Harley-Davidson® badge on them – nearly one full year after the Motor Company had called an end to bicycle sales. After a cease-and-desist letter failed to cease or desist anything, the illegal activity was finally stopped by a personal visit from Arthur Davidson in the spring of 1923. Put that in your sewing machine and stitch it. Harley-Davidson® bicycles are on view at the HarleyDavidson Museum™ in Milwaukee. Attendees of the Back Roads Tour and VIP Tour for H.O.G.® members can view the additional bicycle collection not seen in the Museum’s main exhibits.

While not immediately for sale, Project LiveWire™ is specifically designed for the purposes of getting insight into rider expectations of an electric Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. “America at its best has always been about reinvention,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Operating Officer, HarleyDavidson Motor Company. “And, like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in our history, with

Customers leading us every step of the way. Project LiveWire is another exciting, Customer-led moment in our history.” Spurred by this heritage, the Project LiveWire™ Experience invites Customers to test ride, provide feedback, and learn more about the story of the motorcycle. Even those who don’t yet ride will have the opportunity to feel the power of Project LiveWire™ through the Jumpstart™ demo – a simulated riding experience. A 2014 U.S. tour – kicking off with a journey down Route 66 – will visit more than 30 Harley-Davidson® dealerships now through the end of the year. In 2015, the Project LiveWire™ Experience will continue in the U.S. and expand into Canada and Europe.
> PERSONAL FREEDOM This exciting new ride blends the styling heritage of the Company with the latest technology to deliver a new expression of the signature Harley-Davidson® look, sound, and feel. “Project LiveWire is more like the first electric guitar – not an electric car,” said Mark-Hans Richer, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, HarleyDavidson Motor Company. “It’s an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric. Project LiveWire is a bold statement for us as a Company and a Brand.” The bike offers a visceral riding experience with tireshredding acceleration and
> FREEDOM TO RIDE As riding in the great outdoors is one of the best elements of motorcycling, sustainability remains a core strategic focus at Harley-Davidson. “Preserving the riding environment is important to all of us,” said Levatich. “Project LiveWire is just one element in our efforts to preserve and renew the freedom to ride for generations to come. As a Company that has seen success for 111 years, we think in generational terms about our great riding environments for the next 111 years.” Fans can learn more about Project LiveWire™ as well as specific dates and locations for Project LiveWire™ Experience stops, at projectlivewire.com.
