OUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

BKV Group enhances the physical and cultural environment through meaningful, responsive, multi-disciplinary design. Supported by innovative technology and a strategic market focus, we work to transform communities locally, nationally, and internationally. We believe the craft is as important as the science, especially in giving soul to the process and built environment. Through a highly participatory endeavor, our design strategies express a “rootedness” in their surroundings. This strategy goes beyond the specific building to deliberately capture the expression of people, site, and culture. It is a contextually sensitive approach that is based on, and reactive to, our clients’ goals, budget, vision, and focus, with our creative process engaging all team members to transform and positively shape communities around the globe.

PRE-DESIGN

PROJECT DISCOVERY

We immerse our team in our client’s communities to gain a deep understanding of their current space utilization, employee, youth and volunteer engagement, technology usage, natural lighting, and sense of connectivity. This allows us to enhance engagement and satisfaction, optimize space utilization with consideration for the future, and adhere to budget parameters.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN

CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT

Our holistic planning approach considers the needs of all users as we assess the functional, sustainable, and aesthetic requirements for the project. Working to improve efficiencies, function and adjacencies, we maximize multipurpose spaces and indooroutdoor connectivity. Preliminary floorplans, finish and fixture schedules are completed during SD.

Developing the “big idea” and concept for any project is key to the start of design direction. The vision captures high-level project goals that define priorities and user experience of the space.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS

CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION

REFINING THE DESIGN

Refinement of the concept design documentation occurs during this critical phase by marrying the space planning with the concept in a threedimensional illustration of the design. We select all major building systems and components that meet both the Owner’s design standards and budget, while also complying with all applicable codes. Visualization presentations may also occur during Design Development.

TECHNICAL DESIGN & DOCUMENTATION

Technical design documentation occurs in this phase. Documents are coordinated and integrated with inhouse disciplines, direct consultants and outside consultants. We follow strict QA/QC compliance process to provide documents that meet or exceed industry standards. Project bidding, permitting, cost verification, and VE may occur prior to issuance of final Construction Documents.

EXECUTION

BKV’s team is actively engaged with your General Contractor, Subcontractors and Procurement teams to help address challenges that arise in the field. Our dedicated Construction Administrators attend periodic site visits to monitor construction progress and complete field reports, identifying critical action items. We work to complete final inspections and required project closeout items, O&M manuals and product warranty information.

MISSION DRIVEN APPROACH

BKV Group’s design solutions are functional, beautiful, and respond to our client’s goals, vision, budget & focus

LISTENING & INFORMATION GATHERING (CLIENT ENGAGEMENT)

We immerse our team in our client’s communities to gain a deep understanding of their culture, values, objectives, challenges, comps, audience, opportunities, and differentiators. We listen to operations, maintenance, resident and owner concerns and long-term goals, and participate in site visits to identify areas of opportunity. This data will guide the social, wellness, and service programming for the project and will steer the creative direction.

HOLISTIC CAPABILITIES

BKV has access to in-house multi-disciplinary design services with scope beyond interiors, as well as a comprehensive planning approach considering resident’s needs and staff operations. We provide cost assessment and budget review with stakeholders and assistance with phasing in an occupied building.

VISUALIZATION

From study through construction, we leverage different types of graphics to communicate the possibilities of a project, options for look and feel, and to establish expectations for quality and craft of construction.

We use visual storytelling and mood boards to express the potential character and energy of the project. Simple black and white wireframe studies help convey spatial and functional relationships, and rendered perspectives showcase material exploration.

Virtual reality walk-throughs allow clients to experience the unbuilt space in three dimensions. From initial massing to the finalized design, this immersive technology allows for real-time project and client team collaboration and development.

BRANDED ENVIRONMENTS

BKV Group is one of the few national design firms offering an in-house Branded Environments unit who, in addition, assist our design teams in navigating through the initial research, strategy and discovery phases, shaping brands early in the project life cycle that will inform how spaces are designed, marketed and experienced.

VISION

Architecture is beautiful for the harmony it creates between itself, it’s environment, and its inhabitants. Sustainable design is the natural progression of that vision with BKV designed buildings always responding to their context — their location, their function, and how they are used by their occupants. BKV Group has a holistic vision for the building’s life-cycle to appropriately respond to context, function, and use. We leverage sustainable design strategies by tapping into a wide spectrum of knowledge — of architecture, interior design, urban planning, energy modeling, engineering, landscape architecture, technology and science — with our clients receiving the benefit of decades of collective professional expertise. In addition, because there is no predetermined outcome or prototypical concept, our process yields work of extraordinary originality, crafted to the specific needs of the site, user and circumstances.

ARTSPACE SILVER SPRING ARTIST LOFTS

Silver Spring, Maryland

Located just north of the heart of Washington, DC, Silver Spring has become a major business hub and hosts several multi-cultural festivals as well as a growing arts community. BKV Group is working with Artspace, Montgomery County, and the Montgomery Housing Partnership to develop the former Third District Police Station on Sligo Avenue into an arts center anchored by affordable live/ work housing. The former station, built in 1962, was Silver Spring’s first permanent police station and will be converted into working artist studios and creative spaces, providing opportunities for the area’s creative artists and organizations eager to find affordable workspace within the DC Metro area.

In addition to the redevelopment of the existing building into artist studios, the proposed development also includes construction of 68 affordable live/work units and 11 townhouses. This project will create a strong anchor and transitional connection between the business district and residential neighborhoods. The site plan responds to the sensitivity of the neighborhood, while providing vital opportunities for job growth, affordable rental and for-sale housing, and support for the local creative economy.

360 COMMUNITIES FAMILY SHELTER

Eagan, Minnesota

BKV is currently working with 360 Communities to program and design a new shelter for victims of domestic violence in Eagan MN. The initial program is for a fifty-person shelter that combines two existing shelters at one location. Additional programming includes administrative space for 20 employees plus volunteers.

We began our discovery and engagement workshop with a focus of trauma informed care for residents and secondary trauma experienced by staff and volunteers. We discussed the opportunity of creating physical spaces to promote safety, well-being and healing. Acknowledging that the physical environment can have a positive impact on identity, worth, dignity, empowerment, joy and hope. In addition, we explored the concept of secondary trauma and how overtime staff can experience internalization of trauma leading to compassion fatigue and burnout.

We believe that creating a place where people want to be is critical to the success of 360 Communities programming and services.

YOUTH-CENTERED SHELTER DESIGN

When reimagining the next generation of youth shelters, BKV Group architects turned to the experts: youth. Youth in shelter described challenges of residing in a cramped facility with a dozen other youth for days, weeks, and months. The redesigned St. Cloud Youth Shelter addresses their recommendations featuring more privacy, open layouts to reduce trauma, access to the outdoors, and spaces that feel like a home not an institution.

180 Degrees’ vision is to operate safe, welcoming, enriching facilities that foster safety, healing, growth, and brain development. Youth can experience support, discover and amplify strengths, and move forward in positive directions. A facility that provides opportunities for learning and exploration will increase positive outcomes for youth.

“I feel a lot more calm here. It’s the first time I’ve ever had a bedroom of my own. I’m starting to do better in school, too.”

— Jayce, Age 16

“I never expected this is what a shelter would be like. Having a private room, a school right down the hall, and a place to focus on me is changing my life.” — Kayla, Age 14

180 DEGREES CLIFTON PLACE MINNEAPOLIS, MN

In 1973, Robbie Robinson founded 180 Degrees, Inc. and the Clifton Place Program. Robinson spent twenty years in and out of prison, and wanted to improve the odds for other ex-offenders. With the help of his parole officer and other “experts” like himself, Robinson mapped out a plan for a residential program providing services needed by clients just like him. 180 Degrees’ first board of directors included Robinson and other ex-offenders. Today, nearly fifty years later, Clifton Place has assisted more than 9,000 men with their transition back to the community, their families and their new lives. Providing short-term affordable housing in a 37-bed residence, structured programming and case management, clients are supported to secure stable employment, maintain sobriety and establish new living arrangements. www.180degrees.org/brittanys-place-500008-245994

MISSION

180 Degrees creates safe spaces and services that honor each individual’s healing journey.

IMPACT

In 2022, 237 men were safely housed and participated in daily, structured programming preparing then for re-entry. Services reduce recidivism and offer an alternative to homelessness or release to the community without structure.

180 DEGREES CLIFTON PLACE

Minneapolis, Minnesota

BKV took on the renovation of 180 Degrees’ Clifton Place project, a community re-entry facility, which aimed to revitalize the residential community and enhance the quality of life for residents. With a focus on functional and design upgrades, along with the introduction of new amenities, this project represents a significant investment in the wellbeing and satisfaction of our community members. At the heart of the Clifton Place project is the renovation of residential units to provide modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing living spaces. Through careful planning and thoughtful design, we’re incorporating upgrades such as new flooring, fixtures, and finishes to create a contemporary and comfortable environment for residents to call home. Additionally, new furniture will be provided to ensure that each unit is equipped with stylish and practical furnishings that complement the overall design scheme.

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is the transformation of an existing garage into a vibrant indoor community space. This multipurpose space will serve as a focal point for social gatherings, events, and training, therapy and group activities, providing residents with a versatile venue to connect, relax, and focus on betterment of their selves. In addition to interior upgrades, the Clifton Place project includes exterior improvements to enhance the overall curb appeal and functionality of the property. From refreshed landscaping and lighting to upgraded pathways and seating areas, these enhancements create an inviting and attractive exterior environment. A redesigned courtyard will serve as a tranquil oasis where residents can unwind, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors in a serene setting.

HOPE COALITION

Red Wing, Minnesota

The project design incorporates trauma and healing-informed principles to create a healthy and supportive environment for individuals and families. The layout includes a variety of space types to cater to diverse needs, ensuring that everyone finds a place where they feel comfortable and safe. Individual apartments provide a sense of privacy and security, allowing individuals to have their own space for healing. The environment is adjustable, with lighting, temperature, and other amenities customizable to suit individual preferences and create a sense of control. Access to nature has been recognized as a powerful healing element, and the project design embraces this principle with direct access to the outdoors by creating indoor/ outdoor opportunities, views to nature, and benefits from natural daylighting. To address the potential impact of secondary trauma on staff, the design includes dedicated spaces for staff to promote their well-being and resilience. These spaces are thoughtfully designed to provide comfort and support for those who tirelessly work to support the residents. The interior spaces are organized to have staff, resident, and community spaces focused on providing a view to the outdoors from each room and ample natural daylighting. The thoughtful design of the spaces promotes healing and empowerment, for individuals to engage in the healing process actively and be a place where people want to be. By integrating trauma and healing-informed design principles throughout the project, the environment becomes a spark for positive change and growth for those seeking support and healing.

CREST APARTMENTS

Brooklyn Center, Minnesota

Brooklyn Center is a vibrant and growing community with a diverse population, and conveniently located near downtown Minneapolis. The Crest I & II communities provide residents with all the amenities they need to live a sustainable and connected lifestyle. From spacious and secure parking, to outdoor patio areas, to direct access to the scenic Shingle Creek Region Trail and Centennial Park, Crest connects residents to comfort and community, both within their walls and in the wider neighborhood.

The design of the new building was influenced by the existing building. It incorporates the concepts into an updated and refined design look with a retro feel. The existing tower is formed by two tall masses connected by the center blue recessed space. The primary window banding also creates a strong horizontal rhythm on the main elevations. The new 5-story addition has strong corner masses and a recessed center of the building, responding to the existing massing but creating something unique.

KID ZONE | HOPKINS, MN

The driving force behind Kid Zone is to give children in the surrounding communities a nurturing environment that allows them to grow into their best selves. Our teachers, staff and families work together to create a community focused on learning and healthy living. www.kidzoneslp.com

MISSION

We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing children to become enthusiastic learners while supporting our exceptional educators.

IMPACT

Kid Zone is one of a few early learning centers in Hopkins to receive Minnesota’s Parent Aware Rating. This quality rating demonstrates our ongoing commitment to our mission to provide quality child care, which benefits the child, their families and our community. It is validation that Kid Zone is providing great care for our children and ensuring they are ready for kindergarten! In 2018 we received and maintain a four star quality re-rating, which is the highest rating we can receive.

KID ZONE

Hopkins, Minnesota

Kid Zone had to leave their existing property in St. Louis Park because the owner was selling, and it was during a time of childcare crisis where many Minnesotans faced a lack of quality early care options. Kid Zone’s relocation to Hopkins provided a site with visibility from Highway 169, serving Kid Zone’s current population and allowing them to increase capacity to fill one additional classroom. With ample natural light, soft vibrant colors, and appropriate furnishings as well as easy access to program features, this additional classroom helps fill the gap of quality early care.

Conversion of a 13,200 GSF leased former medical office building into a vibrant infant through pre-K early childhood learning center. The building was fully reconfigured on the interior, replacing three dozen office and treatment rooms with seven classrooms, an indoor play space, administrative offices, and a commercial kitchen, used to prepare three meals a day from scratch. The project leveraged the building’s unique geometry, existing windows, notable vaulted lobby, and available outdoor space to provide a facility that offers Kid Zone Early Learning Center a new home that allows them to nurture an increased number of students. The existing facility was a rabbit warren of small, enclosed rooms, with confusing wayfinding and a lack of natural daylight. This project envisioned and brought to life a change of use which provides inviting classrooms, pops of color and branding to maintain the individual identity of each age group served, and establishes clear wayfinding for students, staff, and visitors. The design intentionally manifests the values and mission of Kid Zone: encouraging development and discovery and providing inspiring spaces of learning with a plan that facilitates the school’s curriculum.

ABOUT IMPACT

WE WIN Institute (WE WIN) is a 501(C)(3) educational and cultural nonprofit, community based organization dedicated to the mission of creating academic and social success for all children, with a special focus on Black children. WE WIN gives children a base of knowledge in core subjects; introduces them to important historical and cultural knowledge, and assists them in developing the skills they need to grow into successful and responsible adults. WE WIN meets youth and families where they are, working to create a social and educational environment that establishes an equal playing field for those youth most at risk.

WE WIN’s program goals are centered on challenging young people to reach their highest potential. We strive to ensure the youth involved in our programs make their communities brighter for the future. Through literacy, mentoring, cultural and educational activities WE WIN:

• Supports the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of youth.

• Develops the leadership skills of youth through active involvement in WE WIN’s curriculum and through service to the community.

• Provides youth with academic and life readiness skills that help youth succeed in school and in life.

WE WIN currently serves children and families across Minneapolis and the greater Twin City area.

Map of City of Minneapolis Racial and Ethnic Diversity prepared by the University of Minnesota CURA Staff 2023.

WE WIN serves youth ages 5-18. We offer year-round programs that provide academic and social support that utilizes a multi-cultural and an Afrocentric approach to education and academic success.

The challenges of Black students go beyond test scores and grades – in school & after school, Black students, especially boys, have the highest rates of absenteeism, truancy, and suspensions (three-fourth of all suspensions are Black children). Over fifty percent of Black boys drop out prior to graduation.

Our programs provide:

• Knowledge of culture and history

• Academic support

• Community service

• Leadership development, conflict resolution, & team building activities

• Respect for self, families and community

• Parent involvement

• Positive Adult relationships

WE WIN addresses educational disparities by using a culturally relevant curriculum and cultivating youth’s love and respect for themselves, their history, culture, and community through literacy, visual, and performing arts as a vehicle to achieve academic success. We have a successful, proven model that creates pride and a love of learning for Black children who have not been successful in traditional school. Education is the foundation of the Black ecosystem, and it is the priority of our work.

Parents, mentors and educators guide youth through the process of becoming self-affirming and confident adults. Youth participate in community service projects designed to connect them with their neighbors and encourage investment in the health and well-being of their community.

The pedagogical approach of WE WIN supplements our academic program with classes and activities on African and African American history, culture and traditions; community service and adult mentors from the community.

APPLE VALLEY GASLIGHT SITE | CONCEPT RENDERINGS

SITE DESIGN: Our site design at the Gaslight Site, located at 15584 Gaslight Drive, is meticulously planned to harmonize with the surrounding context and foster a strong sense of community for both residents and neighbors. We strategically positioned a higher density building along the 155th St W and Gaslight Dr intersection, enhancing the site’s main access point and proximity to the Metro Rapid Transit station. The density and location of this building aligns with the city’s vision for Suburban Intensive High Density areas. To respect the neighboring single-family zoning, a row of townhomes is situated along the southern edge of the site, creating a transition from high-density housing to lower-density residences. Both building types are designed to incorporate public and private green spaces that promote community engagement. Notably, the townhomes enclose a triangular park on the southeast side, connecting to a nearby walking path and basketball court, envisioned as a central gathering space for the neighborhood.

COMMUNITY FEATURES: At the core of our development are community-centric amenities aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents and the broader neighborhood. A network of courtyards, gardens, rain gardens, walking paths, a dog run, and a community park provide ample opportunities for social interaction and relaxation. Ground-floor patios for residents further enrich the vibrant living environment, fostering both individual well-being and community engagement. The community park located at the southeast corner of the site serves as a focal point, integrating with existing amenities like the walking path and basketball court, and featuring a covered area for social gatherings.

SUSTAINABILITY FEATURES: Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of our design philosophy at the Gaslight Site. We are dedicated to minimizing our environmental footprint through innovative practices and technologies. Our plans include a solarready roof design to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions, aligning with our commitment to creating a sustainable living environment. Native plant landscaping supports local ecosystems, conserves water resources, and aids in stormwater management and watershed health. The building will utilize energy efficient systems, durable exterior and interior materials will be selected to ensure long-term affordability and comfort for residents. This dedication to high quality materials and systems demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development that benefits both current and future generations.

SOLID GROUND

Minneapolis, Minnesota

In response to the evolving needs of Solid Ground, at their East Metro Place we were engaged to enhance their existing facilities and services. T project focuses on revitalizing the staff spaces, consolidating operations into one central site, and elevating the amenities available to residents. The centerpiece of this initiative is the addition to the building, designed to optimize functionality and foster a stronger sense of community. The new staff spaces are carefully crafted to facilitate seamless collaboration and efficiency, ensuring that the dedicated team can provide exceptional service to residents. By bringing all staff members under one roof, we streamline operations and enhance communication, ultimately enriching the resident experience.

Moreover, we recognize the importance of providing residents with access to versatile and engaging spaces that cater to their diverse needs. To this end, the project includes the transformation of the community room into a vibrant hub for social interaction and personal enrichment. This revitalized space will serve as a dynamic venue for events, workshops, and gatherings, fostering connections among residents and promoting a sense of belonging. In addition, we’re establishing a dedicated donation center to support our community outreach efforts and promote sustainability.
