Early Education: Where the Journey Begins By Maria Ward, Principal St. Isidore School

F

or many families with young children, the start of a new year brings the task of finding the best Transitional Kindergarten/ Kindergarten program for their child. TK/ Kindergarten is where early childhood education begins, and choosing the right one can create a solid foundation for a child’s Mrs. Maria Ward, development. The process of finding the Principal best fit can feel overwhelming, but it offers an opportunity to explore different possibilities. Discovering a program that is a specific match for your child’s needs creates a clear path to success. Wondering what to look for in a TK/Kindergarten program? Look for a school that nurtures the whole child, especially during the phase of early childhood. The NAEYC states, “It is before the age of eight that a child experiences the most rapid phase of growth and development. Those years are a critical time for not only cognitive skills but social skills, self-esteem, and moral outlook.” When considering schools, take note of class size and daily schedule, the curriculum offered, and the balance between educational learning and time for creativity and fun. The program should cover basic curriculum in all subjects, but the most important academic material will be literacy and math. You know your child best and what environment is needed for them to thrive. Wondering when to start looking? Now is the time! For most schools, January is prime admissions time and they are already taking applications and offering parent informational meetings. If you missed a scheduled opportunity to visit, I encourage you to schedule a campus tour. You can learn a lot about the quality of a school from a brief tour, especially if you know what you are looking for. While on campus, try to get a feel for the school as a whole. Does it feel safe and nurturing? Is there a sense of community? What specialty programs do they offer? Do they encourage parent involvement? Can you see your family there? Your child’s school should be a place you like to visit. I wish you a rich and rewarding journey as you explore schools for your child. Remember—these years are special and filled with opportunity for learning and fun.
