always planning where to go next with our daughter and two dogs. We take road trips and once we drove to Bend, Oregon then Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to Whitefish, Montana to Idaho Falls, Idaho and ended the trip in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This was with a baby and two dogs during a three-week period. We like road trips because you get a different view than in an airplane. It was a magical experience and the views were unforgettable.”
Don is from the California Bay Area, born in Walnut Creek and raised in San Leandro. Yanira was born and raised in Santa Clara, Cuba. She came to the United States twenty years ago and is very proud and happy to be American and call this home.
Sales and entrepreneurship have always been in Don’s blood. “I have been a salesman all of my life and I have been a business owner for 29 years. I design, manufacture and distribute packaging, printing, displays and signage. My company is called SPK Associates, and I love what I do,” says Don. “I create the packaging, displays and retail signage for consumer products and get to see my creations in stores. Yanira was in the retail clothing industry before becoming the best domestic engineer. She loves being a mommy and wife.”
By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010 | Images courtesy of Gardner Family
Yanira and Don Gardner lived around the corner from each other for many years and frequented the same shops and restaurants, but never officially met. Then fate, by way of a mutual friend, intervened. “A friend was trying to set me up with one of Yanira’s friends, but as soon as I saw Yanira, I knew I was not interested in the friend. When Yanira and I met, we knew there was something special there. Yanira is Cuban, and I had just returned from a trip to Cuba and was wearing a shirt that said “Cuba” on it the day we met. We knew it must be destiny,” says Don.
On their first date, Don says he invited Yanira over to learn how to make bread; “She came in and smiled at me, and I immediately felt like I was home.”
The couple share a love of travel and have created some treasured memories. “Some of our favorite travel memories are cruising around in Maui listening to Pink Floyd and singing together,” says Don. “In Paris, we rented a flat overlooking Notre Dame; we would walk to the bakery every morning for a fresh baguette, then go back to the flat, open a bottle of wine and watch Breaking Bad before going out to see Paris. While in France, we went to Normandy and were both very moved by the history and magnitude of what took place during WWII. It was an amazing experience for both of us. We have been all over the United States and are
The family is completed by two grown children, Zachary and Jennifer, and one toddler, two-year-old Sawae, named after Don’s mother. They also have a grandson, Cash, and a granddaughter, Kaia, plus two French Bulldogs named Papi and Precious. “Jennifer is the mother of Cash and Kaia. She is a successful project manager and mother. She is involved in Cash’s sports and does volunteer rescue for kittens. Zachary went to the Culinary Institute of America in Napa and worked as a chef, but now works for me as a salesman/project manager and is an avid golfer. Sawae just started to go to preschool at Tassajara Learning Center,” says Don.
The family loves taking outdoor adventures and road trips together. “We all love to snowboard and enjoy winter sports. We enjoy walking the neighborhood and markets, riding our bikes downtown and up Mount Diablo,” says Don.
Time together as a family takes top priority for Yanira and Don. “We enjoy snowboarding, traveling, biking, baking bread and cooking. We love going to farmers’ markets and strolling around

downtown. Going to a restaurant and relaxing with a glass of wine and some cheese or food. We love to try new places and support local businesses. We go to the Blackhawk Country Club frequently; it’s close, staff is excellent and friendly, and it’s very comfortable and nice. We love taking road trips too,” adds Yanira.
Giving back to the community is important for the Gardners. “I donate time, money and volunteer for the Alameda Buddhist Temple. It holds a special place in my heart. It’s where my grandparents were founding members over a hundred years ago,” adds Don. “After they passed, I didn’t want my family participation to just end, so I started getting involved in order to keep the tradition of my family participation at the temple alive and hope my children will
continue being involved . I print the signage and booklets for the festivals and for the temple. I also cook and work at the Bazaar and Obon Festival every year. A friend and I make the Curry Rice and do all the grilling for the teriyaki steak, burgers and hot dogs, along with setting up before and cleaning up after the event. I donate signage for the Bay Area Down Syndrome Connection for their annual fundraising walk, as well as money for Wounded Warriors and disabled veterans.”
After living near the Blackhawk main gate for 17 years, they say they still love being in Blackhawk. “It is clean and safe. We love the fact that it is a gated community. We feel very thankful to be living in Blackhawk and enjoy the quietness and the beauty.”

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Giving Them Another Chance
By Sue James, President
EAST COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER DOG, RUPERTLOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME
Rupert Says -” Boys just wanna have fun too!” My name is Rupert and I know the song lyrics are “Girls just wanna have fun”. But I can tell you that Boys Do Too! And if you adopt me – I know we’ll have lots and lots of fun TOGETHER. I keep my volunteer friends laughing all the time. You see –I KNOW TRICKS! Sure, I can sit; sometimes I’ll lay down BUT ASK ME TO SPIN – (sometimes you don’t even have to ask) – and SPIN I WILL. Sometimes I’ll add a quick little howl when I spin because I know it cracks up my human friends. They say I’m 10 years old – but I sure don’t feel it one bit. And my friends keep saying that I’m such a spry boy. I even like doing agility in the Shelter Yard. I love going on walks and I am quite well behaved when I take my friends for a walk. I don’t pull them at all. I am a husky mix with very soft fur, already neutered - and I know if you meet me, you’ll fall in love. I’m residing at the East County Animal Shelter at 4595 Gleason Drive in kennel C5.
Bottle Baby Fosters Also Needed TVAR’S BOTTLE BABY KITTEN PROGRAM
It’s that time of year again! Kitten season is upon us, and Tri-Valley Animal Rescue’s Bottle Baby Program is here to help the youngest and most vulnerable kittens in need. These little ones, sometimes only days old, have lost
their moms and cannot care for themselves on their own. Fortunately, with the help of TVAR’s amazing fosters, they get the round-the-clock care they need to survive and thrive. Like a mother cat, foster parents offer affection, nourishment, warmth, cleanliness, and assistance with the kittens’ bodily functions. Sign up to become a foster, or donate today to join the TVAR family and help save these precious little lives. And remember, if you come across young kittens without their mother, please don’t take them! Mom is likely nearby, watching and waiting for you to leave so she can safely return to her family.
Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance
TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. With our foster dog and foster kitten programs and our Dog and Cat Shelter programs at the East County Animal Shelter, TVAR assists in saving hundreds and hundreds of animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

Red Door Escape Room
By Austin Scott, 4th Grade, Tassajara Hills
For my 10th birthday, my parents surprised me with a trip to the Red Door Escape Room at the Veranda in Concord. It was my first time doing an escape room, and I was excited and nervous.
We did an escape room called Once Upon a Time. It was hard and involved solving a lot of puzzles, but after 55 minutes, we were able to escape!
I loved it so much we bought tickets to do another room this summer. It was fun to work together with my mom and dad to solve the riddles in the room.

2023 Mini HOX Summer Program
Program Dates: June 12 - July 21
PROGRAM INFORMATION
Summer Mini HOX exposes children to the fun and excitement of participating in a recreational swim team setting with the potential to participate on the HOX Swim Team in the coming year or two. The program is ideal for children who enjoy the water but may find it challenging to swim the full length of a 25-yard competition pool. As such, Junior Coaches will be in the water during practice. Stroke technique is taught in all four competitive strokes: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle as well as other fundamental principles of swimming. Your child should be 3-6 years old by June 15, 2023, and fully potty trained to participate in the Mini HOX program.
If you are unsure if this program is appropriate for your child, Coach Sean evaluates all swimmers and can make recommendations for the appropriate program, session, or private lesson. Email Sean at: seanq@blackhawkcc.org, to set up a mandatory evaluation.
The Mini HOX Liaison is Aubrey Buck. Please feel free to email her at: Aubrey.f.buck@gmail.com with any questions or concerns you may have as they relate to Mini HOX.

The Health Risks of Cheap Plastic Surgery: Why Cutting Corners Is Not a Good Idea
By Stephen J. Ronan, MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa
There are numerous risks involved in seeking cheap plastic surgery, including a lack of experience and qualifications of the surgeon, the use of subpar materials and equipment, and the potential for unregulated and unlicensed clinics. These risks can lead to serious complications such as infections, scarring, nerve damage, deformities, and even worse. When it comes to plastic surgery, it is important to prioritize safety and positive outcomes over cost. Patients should seek out reputable, board-certified plastic surgeons who prioritize patient safety and adhere to the highest standards of care. Often, those offering cheaper procedures are not board-certified plastic surgeons, and may not have the necessary training and expertise to perform complex surgeries safely. Additionally, cheap plastic surgery often involves the use of subpar materials and equipment. For example, some clinics may use cheaper, counterfeit versions of well-known brands of implants, pain medications, healing agents, and dermal fillers. In some cases, unsterilized equipment may be used, increasing the risk of infection and disease transmission. Furthermore, cheap plastic surgery clinics may not adhere to the same safety standards as reputable, medically accredited clinics. These standards may include preoperative testing, sterile conditions, and follow-up care.
With our own private and fully accredited Blackhawk Plastic Surgery Center, we adhere to the highest safety standards, including preoperative testing, sterile conditions, and follow-up care. This ensures that our patients receive the highest quality of care before, during, and after their procedures. We offer a wide range of procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, to address various concerns and preferences. Our very experienced and knowledgeable team of medical and aesthetic practitioners work closely with each patient to create a personalized treatment plan that addresses their individual needs and goals. We strive to achieve natural-looking results that enhance our patients’ appearance.
Simply put, the health risks of seeking out cheap plastic surgery cannot be ignored. If you are considering plastic surgery, we encourage you to prioritize safety and consider Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa for a positive, safe and transformative experience. All of our consultations are complimentary and can be conducted either in person or online. Give us a call at 925-736-5757 to schedule one. We look forward to hearing from you!

Eataly
By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
Recently,
we had the pleasure of going to Eataly located at Valley Fair Mall in Silicon Valley. It is an easy drive, not far from our home in Danville. This location opened in June of 2022.
This is a “foodie paradise” with 3 floors of Italian foods, 5 restaurants and a wine floor that will satisfy any palate. The Eataly format resembles a foodie-fantasy of an Italian village, complete with restaurants, cafés, and market stalls. Give yourself a couple of hours to explore this special Italian food experience.
We especially enjoyed the cannelloni and took some home with us along with fresh pizzas, cheeses, cannoli, ravioli, and a bottle of Blood Orange Mimosa.
We had lunch at La Pizza and La Pasta, enjoying ravioli and great drinks. I enjoyed the Doglish Head 90 Second IPA, and Linda enjoyed the Aperol Spritz made with Aperol, Prosecco, Soda Water and Orange.
The most unique part of the lunch was the dessert. I ordered the cannoli, which were presented on a platter - make it yourself style. A tube of cream and all the toppings came out on a board. (See picture below) Needless to say it was a very fun dessert experience as we filled our shells with cream and topped it with pistachios, chocolate chips and nuts.
Eataly is the creation of Oscar Ferranetti. In just six years, this son of a Piedmont pasta maker has built an epicurean empire. From its base in Turin, Eataly has expanded across Italy to New York and Tokyo, with 20 locations opened and 17 more on the drawing board.
Eataly is open 7 days a week and is a ‘must do’ to add to your bucket list. We look forward to returning soon.

How to loosen your back by fixing your hips
By Dr. Max Lippman, D.C., Director of Plaza Chiropractic and Massage Therapy
Lowback pain is the main condition I see in my office, often caused by sitting too much, leading to deconditioned back and hip muscles.
Many of my patients ask what the best low back stretches are to reduce pain, loosen their tight muscles, and feel stronger day to day.
My answer is to “Stop Focusing On Your Low Back - Start Focusing On Your Hips”.
The hip joints have 6 ranges of motion, and I’ve provided ways to address each range of motion to stretch and strengthen. Try these exercises for a week, and watch your low back tightness melt away!
1. Hip Flexion - We sit for too long, too often, and our hip flexors get INHIBITED and SQUISHED (so they feel tight). Focus on lengthening these (lunges, kicking backwards, lowering legs while laying on your back).
2. Hip adduction - This is your groin muscle, which is always tight. Stretching with side lunges & sitting on a bench and bending forward will help.
3. External rotation - We spend very little time rotating our hips, and these get stuck. Try pigeon pose and figure 4 stretches to loosen up. You can also activate these by using external rotation with a thera-band.
4. Hip abduction - Everyone wants to foam roll their IT bands… DON’T. Just because it hurts, doesn’t mean it’s effective. Instead, focus on foam rolling the glute and side of the hip, but don’t go all the way down the leg.
5. Internal rotation - Butterfly stretches will stretch out the internal rotators, while using a theraband and lifting your leg with your toe pointing in will help activate and strengthen these.
6. Hip extension - Training the glutes through squats is huge, our butts just are simply not strong enough. Start with body weight, and move up. Foam rolling or trigger point ball are great to release the upper glutes.
Try these hips actions, and let me know how your back and hamstrings feel! I bet it’ll be a game changer.

Happy Independence Day
By David Tom, Resident Since 1990
Applause and cheers rocked the downtown as the community welcomed the Kiwanis-Danville 4th of July Parade after last year’s Covid hiatus. The theme was ‘Celebrating our local Olympians’ and recognized community members who have taken part in the pageant. Since 1975, the Kiwanis Club of San Ramon Valley has worked with the Town of Danville to present the event enjoyed by up to 40,000 people. For many, the parade has become a tradition to kick off a day-long event with friends and family, barbeque, and fireworks. This year’s Independence Day will be no different. Come join the crowd at 9:00 a.m. along Hartz Avenue and San Ramon Valley Boulevard and be ready to show your patriotism. The theme for this year’s parade is ‘Celebrating our Educators.’
David Tom: I have lived in Danville for 30 years. I retired from the corporate tax world and now pursue a variety of projects that interest me. I have always loved cars and look forward to sharing them with you.

Piñatas Anytime!
By Michelle Barry, Resident since 2018
Celebrations
of all kinds can be made extra special with a piñata. I made this one for our Annual 4th of July celebration.
It was a lot of fun seeing it come to life. Just a little newspaper, cardboard, a balloon and wallpaper paste was used to make the basic shape. I let it dry overnight and once it was dry I painted on the design and then used glue and tissue paper to complete it.
Here’s the link to the video I found helpful to walk me through the process: https://youtu.be/44JYARhkFe8
My husband was surprised with the outcome as the basic shape, made with just newspaper, wasn’t pretty.
I will definitely make more piñatas in the future. It was very simple to make and I think it turned out to look like a real piñata!
Now it’s time to fill it with candy and hang it up for the party. I hope you give it a try! If you do post a picture on Instagram please hashtag #bhlmcrafts

Banana Pancake
By Parisa Z. Ambwani, Resident since 1983
Serves 3-4
• 1 cup oat flour
• ¼ cup sorghum flour
• ¼ cup flaxseeds flour
• 1 tablespoon almond flour (almond meal)
• 2 teaspoons baking powder (aluminum-free)
• 1 dash sea salt
• 2 medium ripe bananas, mashed
• 2 eggs, slightly beaten
• 1 cup milk plus 2 tablespoons
• 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
• 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus vegetable oil, for greasing griddle
Garnish: With maple syrup and strawberries
Sift dry ingredients (oat, sorghum, flaxseeds, almond, baking powder and salt) 2-3 times.
Blend wet ingredients (bananas, eggs, milk, brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons olive oil) in blender for a few seconds or until mixed.
Add sifted dry ingredients into wet ingredients and blend for 1 minute to make batter (you should have about three cups of thin batter). Chill batter for a few hours.
Heat greased, non-stick griddle over medium heat. Stir and pour ½ cup of batter onto griddle. Spread out batter; cover griddle for 30 seconds, remove cover and continue cooking until tiny bubbles appear in the batter. Flip the pancake over and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes or until done (please watch pancake carefully so it does not burn.) Serve warm with syrup.
Notes:
1. Test your griddle temperature by adding a tiny amount of batter to a heated griddle. It should be set immediately.
2. You can sift flour (oat, sorghum, flaxseeds, and almond), ahead of time and transfer it to a sterilized tightly covered container and refrigerate for convenience use.

Early Alert Canines (EAC) is launching a Puppy Raising Program and looking for Puppy Raisers!
By Victoria Briskin, Development Director Early Alert Canines
Their mission is to improve the health, safety, and well-being of people with insulin-dependent diabetes through partnerships with certified low blood sugar alert dogs.
EAC greatly values the volunteers who participate in puppy raising to help train future service dogs. These compassionate individuals open their hearts and homes to provide a safe and loving environment for our young puppies. They receive comprehensive support and training from the EAC team, attending classes, public outings, and learning basic service dog obedience.
By becoming a puppy raiser, you will have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact by raising a life-saving partner. To become a puppy raiser, you will be required to open your home to a puppy between the ages of 8 weeks and 18 months.
You will need to attend weekly training sessions at EAC, monthly public outings (in-person only), provide food and other supplies according to EAC guidelines, and dedicate time to train the puppy in basic obedience skills. You will also need to monitor the puppy during the day. The time commitment ranges between 4 and 18 months and EAC works around your schedule, allowing you to take breaks and vacations while someone else cares for the dog.

Pinehurst #9 –The Resort’s Only Nicklaus Track
By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
Pinehurst No. 9 is one of nine courses at Pinehurst Resort, a historic golf resort anchored by the main lodge - the Carolina Hotel. Designed from 1898 to 1961, the first five courses surround the main golf club. No. 2 is the most wellknown course, designed by Donald Ross in 1898. A $435 greens fee reflects its history of hosting major championships including the US Men’s and US Women’s Open in 2014. No. 2 is tough especially the upside-down saucer greens.
However, the other eight courses are challenging but more playable and much lower priced. We played the four modern courses, No. 6, No. 7, No. 8, and No. 9, originally built from 1979-1996 in separate locations up to four miles from the Clubhouse.
Pinehurst No. 9 - The National
Pinehurst No. 9 is the only Nicklaus course in the Sandhills area. It was originally opened in 1989 as a private club - the National Golf Club. Pinehurst purchased it in 2014 making it the ninth course in the Resort collection. It’s also known as Pinehurst National. Not surprisingly, an impressive clubhouse and entrance awaits visitors, featuring a splendid restaurant looking over the 9th green.
Pinehurst No. 9 packs some punch. The Par3 second hole immediately calls for a long carry over water with no bailout. The tenth hole is fun Par5 with options. Risk the tee shot close to the water on the right for the best approach. The second shot over water tempts one to chew off as much of the dogleg as feasible to get home in two or set up a short approach. Both nines finish with a flourish. The ninth and eighteenth holes are scenic and sport greens that are guarded by water on the left. A classy monument to Jack Nicklaus was installed to commemorate the only Nicklaus course in the North Carolina Sandhills area.
Pinehurst No. 9 is a more challenging Nicklaus course than you’ll find on his typical resort course offerings. Memorable water holes are exciting and it’s extremely wellmanicured. Typical of Nicklaus, bent grass greens are undulating and mounded rather than plateaued allowing for more options for green-side recovery shots. Pine straw is predominant instead of grassy rough. It’s a great addition to the Pinehurst Resort golf course group.
If You Go:
Course Info - Pinehurst No. 9 has five tee grounds from 4911 yards to 7118 yards. The blue tee rating is 71.6 with a slope of 134. The white tee rating is 69.6 with a slope of 125.
Location - Pinehurst No. 9 is three miles east of the main lodge and golf club. In the Village of Pinehurst seventy-five miles southwest of the Raleigh-Durham airport and seventy miles south of Greensboro, NC. Google Maps Link Lodging - Pinehurst Resort has four lodging alternatives, the historic Carolina Hotel, the Holly Inn, and the Manor Inn. The Condos at Pinehurst are another choice for larger groups.
