Dear Neighbors, Blackhawk Living Magazine is celebrating a big milestone this month: our five-year anniversary! We are thrilled and honored to have had the opportunity to serve our community with a local magazine for the past 60 months and look forward to many more. This month we are introducing you to your neighbors, the Scherers. Scott and Teresa Scherer have raised six children in Danville and love calling Blackhawk home. It’s about this time of year that I start to get a little cabin fever, so I’m really looking forward to Sunday, March 8th, when we get the pleasure of advancing our clocks an hour. I love having more time to walk the dog, play outside and visit with neighbors. It’s also a sign that warmer weather is on the way! It’s been incredibly fun to share the stories of our residents over the past five years in Blackhawk Living Magazine. Thank you for all of your support! Warmly,
Megan Scott Resident since 2010

Meet the Scherers: A Full House of Fun By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
T
here is never a dull moment in the Scherer household, and that’s just the way Scott and Teresa like it. Besides being mentors to many kids through coaching and running a nonprofit, Scott and Teresa have six children of their own and two grandkids. With five boys and one girl, the Scherers have loved every moment of raising their kids in Danville and being involved in so many local activities, especially sports. Scott says he knew the moment he saw Teresa that she was the girl for him. “We met on Teresa’s birthday, and I begged her friend to give me Teresa’s phone number. It took six months of relentlessly pursuing her before she finally agreed to a date. She agreed to a lunch date one day while she was at work. She was hungry and my offer sounded good. It was good Mexican food, and I finished her meal. She liked that and the rest is history.” The couple purchased their first home together in San Ramon in 1997 and have been in the area ever since. Teresa grew up in Hayward and always wanted to move to Danville after visiting and seeing how green and serene it is. Scott was born and raised in San Diego and thought he would return to Southern California after a brief stint working in the Bay Area, but that was not to be the case after meeting the love of his love, who would always be a Northern California girl. Scott followed her lead, and they became committed to a life in the Bay Area.
Teresa attended Cal State Hayward and enjoyed a two decade long year career in the mortgage industry. She also took time to be a stay at home mom for a few years and was fortunate to be very involved in all her kids’ activities. For the past four years Teresa has worked as a patient coordinator at Blackhawk Plastic Surgery in Blackhawk Plaza. Scott graduated from The University of Arizona with a major in Radio and Television and a minor in coaching. “I’ve been fortunate to enjoy a couple of different careers in my lifetime. I was a sports reporter and hosted a radio show as well as worked in the wine industry and ran a sports and entertainment company,” says Scott. He currently owns an Employee Benefits Company, Hall of Fame Benefits, LLC and has worked in financial services for more than 20 years. “I also operate capital markets for a private equity firm and appreciate that I get the opportunity to meet with employers and employees to assist in providing simple solutions to the complex world of Medical Insurance. I love providing education to investors and offering unique alternatives to the financial advisor community. I specialize in working with professional athletes and conducting educational meetings with many NFL, NBA and MLB players,” shares Scott. A love of sports is a common thread through the Scherer family. From coaching to working with professional athletes, Scott also co-founded and operates the nonprofit Hall of Fame Sports Association with Hall-of-Fame Quarterback Warren Moon and in cooperation with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “This organization provides opportunities for all kids regardless of skill and economic stature to participate in Hall of Fame Flag Football Leagues, clinics and camps across the country. Kids should have no barrier of entry to playing sports, having fun and learning good character traits,” says Scott. He was also involved with the San Ramon Valley T-Birds football program for 14 years and coached football at Monte Vista High School. Scott currently coaches football at San Ramon Valley High School. Raising six kids keeps life very exciting for Scott and Teresa. Michael, Luke, Zalman, Zach, Noah and Amanda plus two grandkids, Sy and Clementine, make for a busy schedule and lots of adventure. “We have five boys and our youngest, Amanda, is our only girl. It’s amazing how all our kids are so different with such unique personalities. In fact, they all have a different Astrological zodiac sign,” says Teresa. The Scherer kids have participated in many of the local Danville organizations such as Little League, Boy Scouts, Oaks Rugby and ST. Isidore’s CYO. Amanda is an avid dancer

at Triple Threat Performing Arts and on the Monte Vista High School Pom Team. Noah is a Senior at Monte Vista High School. Michael is married and raising his own family. Luke graduated from Monte Vista High School in 2010, is now married and living in Canada. Zalman played football at an East Coast school and entered the Army as an engineer, and Zach is attending Portland State University and is captain of the Portland State E-sports team. “ One time we had four kids playing Little League on different teams at different places and our daughter, Amanda, was dancing in the same season. We had a spreadsheet of when to drop off and pick up which kid, and we are proud to say we never missed a game or performance,” says Teresa. Family vacations with a party of eight always made for memorable events. When they arrived at their destination, Scott and Teresa had to rent 2 cars to fit everyone and the luggage. Carpooling friends and other kids in their car was never an option, as there was no space. “We had three kids in car seats at one time. No matter how big the
the Scherer Clan Scott with Daughter, Amanda
car, mini vans and suburbans, we always filled all the seats with our clan,” says Scott. “Adjusting to a household of four instead of eight has come with some transitions,” says Teresa. “The biggest change from having four of our six children move out on their own has been the cooking. I still find myself cooking for eight, instead of four, which leads to lots of leftovers and big portions.” The most important thing Scott says he and Teresa try and teach their kids is
independence. “We are far from helicopter parents and big believers in the saying ‘Give a person a fish eat for a day, but teach a person to fish and eat for a lifetime’. We often remind the kids to learn to advocate and navigate for themselves and their futures will be bright.”

Since We’re Neighbors, Let’s be Friends By Linda Kralik, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services/ Drysdale Properties, Resident since 1984
T
he beauty of living in a community is the feeling of belonging. In Blackhawk, you are not just buying a home, but buying into the lifestyle that is Blackhawk and belonging totally to its community. The reasons for selecting this very desirable neighborhood are many, but the reason I hear the most while talking with prospective clients is the safety factor. They talk of the desire to be located in a gated community and find Blackhawk, with 24 hour live guards at three of the entrances and restrictive coded entries for the other 4 neighborhoods, a perfect choice. In addition to the live guard gates the matter of having our own Fire Station adjacent to the Silver Oak townhomes, as well as our own Police Services on property, gives an extra layer of protection for these potential homeowners. But having all of this does not guarantee safety. It guarantees a certain amount of privacy, a quicker response for first responders, and satisfaction of controlled street traffic etc., but not safety. Is Blackhawk more safe than other communities? Yes. Because Blackhawk has privacy gates, because of the nearness of a Fire Station and a Paramedic’s Ambulance, because we have our own Police Force, yes we are safer than adjoining communities without these amenities. But can we do more to enhance and protect ourselves? And the answer is yes. My January article touched on many security measures an individual homeowner can make to ensure their own personal safety. Perimeter lighting, Burglar Alarm systems, Home camera surveillance systems, (Nest or Ring) just to name a few. And last but not least, there are your neighbors. Yes, they are the ones most likely to see or hear what is going on in the neighborhood. There are many structured security type programs. And it is a proven fact that Neighborhood Watch, Block Watch, Town Watch, Crime Watch, or any local name given to a program, is one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear. By working together, neighbor to neighbor, you can fight the isolation that crime both creates and feeds upon. It forges bonds among area residents, helps reduce burglaries and robberies, and improves relations between police and the communities they serve. With a similar type of program this also becomes a springboard for emergencies, for example, wild fires or earthquakes. So, be a good neighbor. Find out who your neighbors are. Get to know them. And let’s protect each other.

iedel, the wine glass company, teamed up with local Livermore winery, McGrail Vineyards for an amazing night of wine and stemware education. My husband, Mike, and I joined Susan Dubrow from Riedel, to taste several McGrail wine varietals. Each wine was chosen to highlight both the depth of the wine and the ability of the Riedel glassware to reveal its individual character. We learned all about Enjoying the Pinot Noir in the Riedel Pinot Noir glass the principles of wine tasting and appreciation, the relationship between each wine’s bouquet, texture, flavor, and finish (what the Riedel calls “the message” of the wine), and the influence of wine glass architecture on the experience and character of each varietal. Our minds were truly blown by how much each glass either enhanced the flavors of the wine or muted them. Best of all, we got to leave with a set of varietal-specific Riedel Performance Wine Tasting glasses that we can’t wait to enjoy. What to Look For in a Contractor’s Bid By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.
L
et’s assume you need to hire a pool contractor for either a new pool installation or a major repair or renovation. You contacted a few local companies and have received a few bids on the project. You will quickly notice that not all bids are created equal. There are a few red flags to look out for and a few things you should always expect to see when you receive an estimate for a project. When receiving a bid from a pool contractor, the first thing to look for is the description of the work to be done. You want an estimate that is very detailed and thorough so there are no misunderstandings. If you receive an estimate and the description of work is vague and open to interpretation, it’s a red flag. Next, the bid should be all-inclusive, meaning that the price on the estimate includes tax, labor and parts. The bid should not change because the contractor ran into “something unexpected.” If an estimate is created carefully there should be no hidden fees over the course of the job. The biggest red flag you can run into when collecting estimates from different companies, is receiving a bid much lower than the rest. Installing a pool is highly technical in nature. If you receive a low bid on your project, there is probably a misunderstanding somewhere. Either the scope of the work was not defined well, or misunderstood, or the products that are being sold are not comparable. It is not uncommon to go with the lowest bidder and then find “unexpected” increases in the price. When hiring a contractor for a large project, make sure to do some investigating. Ask for their workers’ compensation or general liability insurance company, and then call that company to make sure the insurance is up to date. If the contractor doesn’t have valid insurance, the homeowner is responsible if something were
to happen. Also, keep in mind that documents are easy to forge and some very shady contractors will produce fake documents. That’s why calling to verify the information is important. Also verify the contractor’s license. A licensed person has the required education, experience, insurance and qualifications to obtain a license. They must pass a competency examination before practicing. Licensed individuals are screened for prior criminal history and their license can be revoked if they are not living up to professional standards. Visit www.cslb.ca.gov to verify a license. Lastly on the list would be to make sure that the contractor will pull permits. The homeowner is the ultimate say on this, but this adds another layer of protection. Get everything in writing, as descriptive as possible, and be sure to have both parties sign the contract. At Atlantis Pools our service people specialize in repairs and are backed by decades of experience. We offer a free estimate and diagnosis on all your pool needs. Please visit www. atlantispoolsdanville.com or email info@atlantispoolsdanville. com to schedule an inspection.

I Can Do That Performing Arts Center is Getting Ready to Move Downtown By Shayna Ronen, I Can Do That Performing Arts Center
D
anville is an incredible community, and our kids are so fortunate to have access to great schools and education, but something we can’t ignore...is that the world is changing. In a seemingly connected world via social media we are actually losing the opportunity to connect face to face and the ability to understand ourselves and peers. Others are well adjusted, but not necessarily being given all of the tools necessary to develop into their highest and most empowered selves. We founded I Can Do That three and a half years ago. We use the power of community and performing arts to fuel our youth - the individuals who will grow into the leaders, citizens, and problem solvers we need in this world. With access to education, along with a foundation in self awareness, collaboration, and problem solving, we believe today’s youth can take on any future challenge and be a positive contribution to the world. At I Can Do That we have witnessed our students creating a positive identity within themselves, and then paying it forward to their peers, building each other up and creating a community of love, encouragement, and growth. Not only are they learning and expanding, they know they have a place where they belong. We have been seeking a creative next step in order to serve more of our local youth in a more deliberate way. We are so thrilled to announce that we have signed a lease and will be transforming a space located at 194 Diablo Rd. into a Performing Arts Center, complete with 3 studio spaces and a lounge for kids, parents and the community to enjoy. We will continue raising the bar in our theatre arts education as we challenge and expand those interested in exploring the arts, offering more productions, classes, and workshops. We will begin programming focused on the physical, mental, and emotional wellness of our youth, giving them access to local teachers and leaders with classes in meditation, yoga, and journaling. We will also be hosting activities and events for the whole family such as karaoke nights, family dance parties, open mic nights and so much more! Our goal is to create a joyful space for our youth community to connect and flourish, a place where they know they belong, where they can connect with their peers and their community and a place where they can grow. Renovations on the new space will commence on May 1st and the new Performing Arts Center is projected to open in September of 2020. But we need your help; this renovation is truly a community
effort and we can not do it alone. Although ICDT has been a fully self sustaining nonprofit and we plan to continue in this way, we need to raise these funds through a capital campaign in order to complete this build. We are in the process of raising $750,000. These funds will cover the complete renovation of the new space. Since our launch on November, 21, 2019 we have already raised over $200,000! We also have naming rights opportunities available to feature your business and/or family as you stand up in support of this local youth arts movement. We need our community to continue to rally around us so we can provide a beautiful space for our local youth for decades to come. Your help is greatly appreciated at any level! Our youth is the future and we need to invest in them. Let’s truly live locally and start with Danville. If you believe in the power of all that the next generation can create we encourage you to join us! This is an exciting time when we are building our curriculum and our team and we would love to have more motivated community members involved! We are seeking donors, partners, teachers, and volunteers who are passionate about creating a place for our youth to thrive and connect. Please visit our website for current information and get involved! HydraFacials to Facelifts By Timothy M. Rankin, MD MS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery
A
s a plastic surgeon, I am relatively new to the community and thrilled to have joined the practice. I enjoy meeting ‘neighbors’ and would welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you have about skin care, facial rejuvenation or other cosmetic procedures. Our faces age in three ways. These include surface changes associated with sun damage, volume loss, and the loss of skin elasticity over time. Fortunately, there are many ways to rejuvenate your skin and appearance. Management of surface spots is best started with topical products. Daily cleansing can reduce inflammation and a periodic HydraFacial treatment can really get your skin on track and back to a healthy glow. Creams containing Vitamin-A, also called retinoids, have been shown to improve skin tone, collagen production, cell turnover, while reducing superficial lines and wrinkles. There are other options for achieving healthier looking skin if creams alone are not generating desired results. For the upper part of the face, Botox is a safe and effective way to help smooth lines and creases by weakening, not freezing, the facial muscles that can make us look worried. For the middle part of the face, I often recommend fillers. The most common fillers such as Restylane and Juvaderm are made of hyaluronic acid and provide a temporary increase in volume. Cheek and eye fillers typically last 12 months or longer, while lip fillers usually last 4-6 months since our lips are moving all the time. For the lower part of the face, including the neck and jaw, surgical procedures are often the best option, although I have many patients that see great results with other non-surgical treatments. One of my favorites is Vivace, a radio frequency microneedling that stimulates the body’s production of collagen, and results in improved skin elasticity. There are, of course, many other options for improving your skin health and appearance. If you are interested in learning more or getting a no-cost facial or skin consultation, please call 925736-5757 and say “Dr. Rankin referred me.” And as a gift to anyone who signs up for our MedSpa Beauty Club, I’d like to offer a complimentary HydraFacial. I promise… you will not only enjoy, but also see immediate benefits from this relaxing and refreshing treatment.

A New Perspective on Health By Kara Navolio
T
he Medical Institute of Healthy Aging (MIHA), led by Dr. Paul Kim, takes a unique perspective on the role of physicians and traditional medicine. Rather than focus on diagnosis and management of disease, which has been the focus of most disciplines in medicine, MIHA focuses on being proactive in identiftying possible “pre-disease”states. By being more proactive in its approach, MIHA can address the chronic diseases of aging like heart blockage, stroke, cancer, Alzheimer’s and arthritis possibly before it becomes more advanced. By monitoring patients’ health status, doctors at MIHA can be personalized, precise and preventative rather than reactive, giving each client more holistic care. MIHA opened in 2007, originally in Pleasant Hill as Previ Medical Group, Inc. It was the first of its kind clinic in the East Bay. In 2011, Previ moved to Walnut Creek. Then in 2019 the name was changed to its current Medical Institute of Healthy Aging, and they moved to a new state-of-the-art space in
Walnut Creek. It’s the first clinic to practice Valengerontology. Valen comes from the Latin word meaning strong and healthy. Gerontology is the study of aging. Thus Valengerontology is the practice of strong and healthy aging, “the best and truest form of Primary Care Medicine,” says Dr. Kim. MIHA was brought to this line of medicine by Dr. Kim’s patients who wanted a more proactive approach to their healthy. In fact, his patients are his biggest inspiration. “For example,” states Dr. Kim, “one of my elderly clients brought to my attention a new therapy for aging involving using the plasma of younger individuals to help heal certain aspects of aging.” A strong inspiration in Dr. Kim’s desire to improve healthcare is his family and his parents. His mother and father both emigrated from Korea and managed to practice medicine in the U.S. at a time when there were very few foreign M.D.s. Dr. Kim, his wife, Melanie Lee MD and their two children, Amelie and Max live in Danville. In his free time he enjoys staying active with golf and soccer. Dr. Kim adds, “What I am most proud of in my business is the accomplishment of helping my clients in a new way to achieve health goals that are outside of the disease focus of the present day system and to aid in the understanding that aging itself can be explored as a way to improve health and thereby longevity. It is a philosophy and movement that I am proud of moving into mainstream medicine. The continued motion of new ideas and findings and potential treatments, to not only slow aging but even reverse it to some degree, is on the horizon.” To learn more about this new approach to health visit www. medicalinstituteofhealthyaging.com.

Guard Against Too Many Eggs In One Basket By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: Best Financial Life, Resident since 2004
It happens to all of us. We begin to feel that what the markets or a single investment are going to do is obvious. It must go down (or up?) from here! We are barraged with information from the news, our neighbors and ads that have convinced us that there is only one possible thing to invest in (FANG stocks! Or maybe Cash!), and we feel compelled to action. Before you actually do anything, ask yourself these three questions: First, if this goes well, how would your life be different? Not just in the short term, but the rest of your life. Pause here and really think about this. If this goes wrong – I mean totally wrong
– how would your life be different? Would it delay retirement? Would your wife have to go back to work? Now, pause here and, again, really think about this. Have there ever been things that you were certain about in the past that didn’t work out as you expected? You see, it could be that our emotions are trying to carry us away from our rational, long-term strategy. Yes, the above is a bit of a trick, but it’s a righteous trick. It is designed to keep you and your portfolio on-track, because the performance of your portfolio is not what’s important. Instead, the success of your plan is important – it’s the only thing that’s important.

Innovative and Stylish Kitchen & Bath Trends for 2020 By Sheeja Nair, Interior designer, Raashi Design, LLC
A
s we enter into the first few months of 2020, it is evident that the kitchens and baths of the past will be evolving. Bespoke design and customization are on the rise, and the smart home trend has fully infiltrated into every room in our house. At this year’s 2020 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, better known as KBIS, in Las Vegas, NV, innovation was on the forefront.
Customized kitchens and baths will become the new standard. Products that come in an array of different colors and finishes, set each home apart from the other. True Residential, a high-end refrigerator manufacturer, offers unique and bold color options such as Saffron and Blue, which is quite a contrast to the tried and true stainless-steel refrigerator.
Transitional and contemporary styles are ever popular, while more modern and art deco styles will be on the rise. The clean and bright white kitchen will become two toned, and dark, dramatic colors will make a huge splash this year with colors such as black, green and Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year, Classic Blue!
In a world focused on technology but also sustainability, it’s only fitting that our kitchens and baths become smart as well. Elevating the spa-like shower are aromatherapy infused shower heads by Aroma Sense. Samsung’s new slidein ranges are equipped with “intelligent controls” that learn its’ owners cooking habits to suggest commonly used settings.
Sustainably responsible manufacturers are also on the rise, as we make an effort to become a more green culture, saving water and salvaging materials. With innovation, sustainability, and style on the rise in 2020, it will surely be a year of high design and trends that will become timeless classics in the world of kitchen & baths.

Jesse Katz’s Aperture Cellars: Dreams Do Come True By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
R
ecently I had the opportunity to do a tasting of Aperture Wine at Draeger’s Market in Danville.
This wine is being made in Healdsburg by one of our favorite winemakers Jesse Katz. Jesse recently built a winery there. The good news is that his winery had no damage in the recent Healdsburg fires. We had the pleasure to meet Jesse when he was the winemaker at Bill Foley’s Lancaster Winery. His father Andy Katz is a famous photographer and has an impressive gallery in downtown Healdsburg. Andy has traveled to over 90 countries, written 14 books, and his photos have been on the cover of music groups like the Doobie Brothers and Dan Fogleburg. His photos also grace the bottles of Jesse’s sensational wine creations. Jesse has lived all over the world and also worked at famous wineries including Petrus in France and Screaming Eagle
in Napa. He also made Justin Timberlake’s wedding wine and the most expensive wine ever made to date that sold for $350,000 in the Napa Auction. His new winery Aperture is a dream come true for him. The modern 20,000 square foot winery is functioning, but the hospitality room won’t be officially open until Spring 2020. As a result, we were pleased to taste his 2016 Aperture Bordeaux Red blend and 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon at Draeger’s market in Danville Draeger’s has weekly tastings every Friday from 4-7. The tastings cost $10 and wines tasted are sold at a 20% discount. The 2016 Red Blend is 52% Malbec and 48% Merlot. Its elegant and silky texture make this a wine that is drinking beautifully now. The Cabernet Sauvignon is from four mineral rich volcanic soil sites nestled on the cooler hillside Alexander Valley slopes. It is a soft and silky blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with delicate inclusions of Merlot and Malbec. For more information and to make an appointment go to: https://www. aperture-cellars.com/

Cortisol: Too Much of a Good Thing? By Carolyn Krieg, DO and Paul H Kim, MD
S
tress has been linked to just about every health problem there is. And unfortunately, few of us are free from the multiple stressors of everyday life. Stress comes in many forms, divorce, loss of a loved one, high pressure job, illness, surgery, chronic pain, to name a few. Our bodies are hardwired to react to stress in ways that protect us. Most of us are familiar with the “fight-or-flight” response of our body when under an acute stress. This response is a combination of nerve and hormonal signals that prompts your adrenal glands (located above your kidneys) to release a surge of hormones, including adrenalin and cortisol. Adrenalin increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, and increases blood supply to your brain and muscles. Cortisol mobilizes energy (glucose) to fuel the action necessary to deal with the stressor. It also enhances the brain’s use of glucose and increases the availability of substances for tissue repair. Another important role of cortisol is to inhibit functions that are non-essential or detrimental during flight-or-flight. It alters the immune response and suppresses the digestive system, reproductive system, and growth processes. With all the vital functions cortisol plays during times of stress, it can wreak havoc when chronically elevated by a stressful lifestyle or a long-term stressor. Furthermore, when we’re in a constant state of fight-or-flight, our body can get “stuck” in the stress response and forget how to “rest-and-digest” even when the stressor is gone. High cortisol levels can be deceiving, giving us energy to be highly productive, but at the same time robbing us of much needed sleep and
keeping us wired too much of the time. Chronically high cortisol production puts us at increased risk of numerous health problems, including: • mood swings and depression • sleep problems • memory and concentration impairment • blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance • digestive problems • thyroid imbalance • female hormone imbalance • weight gain (especially around the belly) • chronic fatigue • loss of muscle and bone density • impaired healing and cell regeneration Standard tests for adrenal function aren’t very helpful for the majority of people experiencing symptoms. If your doctor orders the typical cortisol test, it’s difficult to see anything other than the most severe cases of adrenal dysfunction (e.g., Addison’s disease or Cushing’s
syndrome). We use a salivary or urine test to check your cortisol at multiple points during the day to assess how well your adrenal glands are functioning throughout the day. Cortisol follows a natural rhythm. It should be high in the morning, allowing us to wake up and start the day, and then gradually decreases. It should be at it’s lowest at night, allowing us to sleep. This rhythm can get out of sync, for example low in the morning or afternoon when we need it to keep us going, and high at night causing sleep disruption. Chronic stress and its negative impact on our health is so common, we do adrenal testing on many patients we see. If adrenal dysfunction is identified, there are ways to treat this with nutritional supplementation, dietary changes, and lifestyle modification to get them functioning normally again. Restoring our bodies ability to “rest and digest” is crucial to our health and well-being. Testing is an important first step. Call today to learn more about adrenal testing and how we can help. Heart Health By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986
L
et’s have a heart to heart! He died of a broken heart! For many cultures the heart was the seat of the mind; so revered by the Mayans, they offered the heart of the brightest and strongest to their Gods. The Egyptians preserved the heart rather than the brain. As we celebrated Valentine’s Day we celebrated the seat of love and compassion- the primacy of the heart over the mind! Our heart health is a combination of our physical, emotional and mental state. The heart is an amazing organ. It pumps oxygen and nutrient-rich blood throughout the body to sustain life. This fist-sized powerhouse beats (expands and contracts) 100,000 times per day, pumping five or six quarts of blood each minute, or about 2,000 gallons per day. The heart also has an electrical system that triggers
the muscle to contract, creating a heart rhythm or a heart beat. As the heart beats, it pumps blood through a system of blood vessels, called the circulatory system. The vessels are elastic, muscular tubes that carry blood to every part of the body. Blood is essential. In addition to carrying fresh oxygen from the lungs and nutrients to the body’s tissues, it also takes the body’s waste products, including carbon dioxide away from the tissues. This is necessary to sustain life and promote the health of all parts of the body. This vast system of blood vessels -arteries, veins, and capillaries -- is over 60,000 miles long. That’s long enough to go around the world more than twice!
24
Your heartbeat is triggered by electrical impulses that travel down a special pathway through the heart. •
•
The impulse starts in a small bundle of specialized cells called the SA node (sinoatrial node), located in the right atrium. This node is known as the heart’s natural pacemaker. The electrical activity spreads through the walls of the atria and causes them to contract. At rest, a normal heart beats around 50 to 99 times a minute. Exercise, emotions, fever, and some medications can cause your heart to beat faster, sometimes to well over 100 beats per minute

toward lowering blood pressure. The TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) program focuses on lowering the bad fat you eat to lower your blood fat and cholesterol levels. As they say, “Genes load the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger!”
Atherosclerosis involves inflammation and buildup of fatty plaques, or atheroma, within vessel walls, which eventually lead to the hardening and narrowing of the arteries. When an atheroma ruptures, a blood clot can form to trigger a heart attack or stroke.
Change your lifestyle:
The most common symptom of coronary artery disease may be having no symptoms at all. Some people will experience angina (chest discomfort, often with exertion). Luckily, the opposite is true as well. Adopting a heart-healthy diet and a healthier lifestyle can improve your health, even if you already have high blood pressure or other forms of heart disease. We are so enthusiastic and welcome having such a great female role model. Mehrasa will be speaking about being an immigrant woman and the struggles she (and others like her) faces as an entrepreneur in the restaurant business. Mehrasa always found peace and harmony with cooking and creating soulful dishes. After a decade-long successful Real Estate career, she finally decided to pursue her dream in 2009 to become a restaurateur. Her first restaurant, Primavera, is a successful staple of the San Ramon community. It is a place where first dates happen and families gather. As an entrepreneur, strong female leader, and world traveler she founded Albatross in 2018 with a simple belief in valuing quality over quantity, sustainability over mass production and natural ingredients over artificial. Although she founded Albatross in Danville, her global inspiration is behind many memorable dishes on the menu: a perfect harmony of cooking techniques and culture to celebrate the diversity of the region.

Consider Some of These Strategies to Use Pre-Tax Dollars to Pay for Orthodontic Expenses By Richard Anthony, DDS MS -- Blackhawk Orthodontics
O
rthodontic treatment fees are a considerable medical expense compared to some of the other usual family costs for annual/routine visits such as dental checkups or eye examinations. However, with proper planning regarding financial issues and coordination of the treatment timing, there can be a significant benefit to pay for the treatment cost with pre-tax dollars.
accounts the taxpayer must be covered by a health insurance plan that has a highdeductible co-pay that exceeds a minimum upwards of $1,350 for an individual plan and $2,700 for a family plan. There are also limitations on the maximum amount of annual contributions that that can be put into such a plan. For the FSA type of plan the 2019 limitation is $3,500 for an individual and $7,000 for a family.
The Flexible Spending Account (FSA) is essentially a type of trust account that is administered by a bank or other financial institution. You put the money in on a tax free basis (usually through salary deferrals), it builds up tax free (you can invest it), and it comes out tax free to cover out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. To qualify for these
In practice, I have seen families use several strategies to maximize the benefits offered by these plans. For instance, if both spouses are employed, they can each contribute to their own individual FSA accounts, thus effectively doubling the annual maximum contribution from $3,500 to $7,000. Another way to maximize the

pre-tax benefit is to time the beginning of the orthodontic treatment near the end of the year and ask the orthodontist if he will accept a partial bulk payment for the current year and then accept a second bulk payment at the beginning of the subsequent year. These strategies can also double the contribution as in the previous example. Also, since the initiation of orthodontic therapy is somewhat variable, any unused funds remaining in the FSA account that could be potentially lost if not used by the end of the current year could be reallocated towards the down payment for treatment. Each family’s situation is unique. I recommend you consult an accountant and/ or tax advisor before implementing any FSA tax-exempt strategies.

Conversations with Kids By Dr. Tracey James, DC, Anatomy Power Wellness
C
hildhood communication. When you read this concept do you think about the way children communicate beyond the words, sentences and stories that they speak, read or write? Kids also learn nonverbal communication skills like body language, facial expressions and touch when connecting with their families, peer groups and their greater communities and circles in which they connect. They learn, explore and develop communication strategies, verbal and non verbal when they are engaged in active dialogue. The opportunity to dialogue with children especially in a peak window between the ages four to six years old fosters, improves and develops brain development as well
as communication skills according to a collective group of researchers from MIT, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. Dialogue, or “back and forth talk” activates Broca’s area, a region of the brain responsible for speech development and language comprehension and even understanding and communicating gestures. John Gabrieli, a senior author of the study, shared with MIT News, “Family conversation at home is associated with brain development in children. It’s almost magical how parental conversation appears to influence the biological growth of the brain.” Conversational turn taking helps children to build stronger communication
skills to support them in having more successful lives, which looks like healthier relationships, overall satisfaction in life and higher self esteem. When we are supporting kids in having a better brain body connection through chiropractic care they often have a lot to say in our “back and forth talk” about their bodies, their experiences in the world and all that they hope to be and achieve. We love connecting with all the kids that come into our office and supporting them in reaching their full potential.

Painting a brighter future – The importance of providing children with Art in school By Maria Ward, Principal, St. Isidore School
H
ave you ever noticed the joy and wonder on a child’s face when they are creating? Whether immersed in drawing, painting or sculpting, the child is free to imagine, explore and grow. As an educator, my job is to provide children with a wellrounded education while preparing them for an everchanging world. More and more information shows how imperative arts integration in schools is in developing well-prepared learners and leaders. Schools across the country have recently changed the emphasis from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), to reflect the importance of educating the whole child. Giving children an outlet to create and explore through art strengthens their proficiency in a multitude of academic subjects.
As children manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. Experimenting with a variety of materials allows them to play around with science. The basic concepts of math are involved in counting colors, beads, feathers and other art supplies. Most importantly, art boosts a child’s confidence, helping them to think more positively about themselves. And art is not just for younger students. For older students, art is an outlet for self-expression and individuality. It provides an opportunity to connect with others while demonstrating their skill set. It sharpens critical thinking as well as other intellectual skills, assisting students with college readiness and lifelong learning. When students graduate college and are looking for their first job, creativity is one of the top skills that sets an individual apart from other candidates. Having the ability to think imaginatively and bring fresh ideas to the table is essential to innovation and progress. However, best of all, art is fun! Numerous studies have shown that pressure on today’s youth is more prevalent than ever. Many children are over scheduled, stressed and suffering from anxiety and depression. Taking time for artistic expression, whether through painting, music or drama, can serve as an outlet that allows students the freedom to relax and reconnect with their emotions. As we ready our children for the future, let us remember that filling their “educational toolbox” with skills and best practices should include a paintbrush. Let us encourage our children to build a colorful life filled with creativity, discovery, and fun.

Our Favorite 2020 Red Carpet Looks featuring Forevermark Diamonds By Steve Padis, Steve Padis Jewelry, Resident since 1989
A
s all eyes turned to Hollywood for the awards season to recognize the talent and creativity of the film industry, there were a lot of diamonds on the red carpet. The past few years, statement necklaces have taken a backseat to large earrings: chandeliers, drops and studs. But on this year’s red carpet, it seemed like the more the merrier! We saw statement pieces of all kinds on some of Hollywood’s best and brightest front and center, seemingly on the neck, ears, fingers and wrists of nearly every actress who attended. Here are some of our favorites, wearing Forevermark Diamonds. Rachel Brosnahan, Golden Globe winner for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, wore Forevermark long drop diamond earrings, a Forevermark twostone diamond ring, a Forevermark diamond eternity rings, and Forevermark stackable diamond bangles to the Golden Globes this year. The responsibly sourced diamonds shined bright for the cameras and perhaps even served as a good luck charm; Brosnahan took home a trophy that night!
Perhaps our favorite Oscar red carpet look is the golden glow of Scarlett Johansson. She was every bit the bombshell in a champagne-colored Oscar de la Renta strapless gown embellished to the rafters with her absolutely jaw dropping Forevermark x Anita Ko diamond earrings. Forevermark diamonds have sparkled on some of the world’s most talented actors for their moment in the spotlight, with their unique appeal of being beautiful, rare and responsibly sourced. We loved this year’s red carpet glamour, and we invite you to see some of these fabulous red carpet jewels in our Walnut Creek Forevermark Boutique or our San Francisco or St. Helena Padis locations!
Awkwafina, another Golden Globe winner of the night for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, wore Forevermark Center of My Universe diamond halo studs and a Forevermark Force of Nature diamond brooch. The brooch was featured as a ring at our Walnut Creek Forevermark Boutique this holiday season and many of us in the Bay Area community got to try it on in advance of its creative appearance as a brooch on the Golden Globes Red Carpet! At this year’s Oscars, Janelle Monae’s Forevermark statement diamond necklace was somewhat hard to spot amid the crystal embellishments of her gorgeous hooded gown, but it certainly added an extra oomph. She had an amazing performance to kick off this year’s Oscars and you couldn’t miss her sparkle!
