Blackhawk: Life through a Lens
Flowers of Hawaii By Sonia Lamba, Resident Since 2015
Hey, wait! “What’s that flower?”
Bird of Paradise resembles a brightly colored bird in flight and is a favorite in tropical arrangements
Click Click Click ! As an island visitor, there’s been a couple of times when I stopped in my tracks to click photos on the gorgeous Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki, delighted by the beauty of its flowers...the majority of these grow nowhere in the world but Hawaii...reason enough for me to make an annual trip to Hawaii. With its excellent climate and varied terrain, Hawaii has become a gathering place for flowering plants from all over the world. From my recent October visit, my pick for this column are the most splendid, most curious, most royal, most common and most exotic beauties: Hawaii’s official state flower yellow Hibiscus, Shampoo Ginger, Queen Emma Lily, Plumeria and Bird of Paradise or Crane Lily.
I am back in Blackhawk but still miss the romance and tropical beauty of Hawaiian flowers. I can’t wait to find similar captivating radiance here.
Plumeria grows everywhere in Hawaii and is the most popular of lei flowers
Shampoo Ginger or Awapuhi is a commom sight and Hawaiians used this aromatic plant to make shampoo
Sonia Lamba As an amateur photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. The mountains, valleys, flowers, water and parks never looked so captivating before. I look for vibrant colors and different shades of life. I love capturing anything that intrigues and inspires me. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!
