Dear Neighbors, It’s the season of giving thanks and giving back, and we’re thrilled to be getting into the spirit. For starters, we try to always feature Blackhawk residents practicing kindness, and this month you will learn about Jim and Rose Gogarty and their love of community involvement. Meet The Gogartys: World Travelers Rooted in Danville By Megan Scott, Resident since 2010
E
ven though Jim and Rose Gogarty worked at the same company together after college, they didn’t officially meet until they were both invited to the same engagement party. It was the 1980’s and Rose was friends with the bride, and Jim the groom. They hit it off, and even though the engaged couple didn’t last, Rose and Jim did.
Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background. Amboseli National Park
The couple grew up only a short drive apart from each other. Jim in Burlingame and Rose in Mountain View. After a relatively brief courtship they were married in 1985 at Rose’s Baptist church in San Mateo with a Catholic priest sharing in the ceremony. A bagpiper played as they walked out of the church as husband and wife and headed for a two week honeymoon in the Hawaiian Islands. Parents to two grown sons, Ryan and Kevin, the family moved to Danville in 1989 when the boys were just toddlers. Ryan and Kevin attended Baldwin Elementary, Charlotte Wood Middle School and San Ramon Valley High. They are both Eagle Scouts and love to hike and camp. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Ryan worked in business and recently achieved his Master’s in counseling from St Mary’s. Kevin graduated from California State University, Northridge and is an independent Legal Videographer working all over the Bay Area. “Ryan lives in the East Bay and Kevin in Sacramento. We feel so blessed to have our boys close and get to visit with them often,” says Rose.
In June 2019. Lyon, France.
Jim has enjoyed a successful sales career working at top software firms including Microsoft and IPO’s with J.D. Edwards, E.piphany and most recently Demandware, which was then acquired in 2016 by Salesforce. He frequently travels for work, and Rose likes to join him when possible. Rose is retired and was most recently an office administrator for Alain Pinel in Danville. The Gogarty family has strong Irish roots. Jim’s comes from a large Irish family with four siblings. His parents immigrated separately from Ireland and fell in love in New York City in the early 1950’s. They married and moved first to Chicago and then in the early 1960’s to Burlingame where Jim grew up. His father, Harry Gogarty, managed the Irish Tourist Board in San Francisco. The family spent many summer holidays in Ireland visiting relatives and were fortunate to be upgraded to first class on transatlantic voyages aboard the HMS Queen Elizabeth 2.

Camping has always been a part of Rose’s life. “I remember traveling to campgrounds across the country with my family of six from a very

young age. We even took a 6-week trip to New York and back from Mountain View, so needless to say, I still love to camp,” says Rose. The Gogartys have a tradition of going to Yosemite and have been going with the same group for over 20 years. “It is always a great time with good hikes, great scenery and good food. We stay in the Housekeeping area on the floor of Yosemite,” adds Jim. Danville residents for three decades and three houses later, Rose and Jim love living here. “We first settled in the Sycamore neighborhood, then Woodranch, and have been in Blackhawk since 2017. We love it here; everyone has been very welcoming. Jim golfs often and I enjoy being involved with Blackhawk Women’s club,” says Rose. They both enjoy the new gym in Blackhawk. It’s always been important to give back and be involved in the community for the Gogartys. Rose sews for an organization called Capes4Heros which makes personalized superhero capes for kids with disabilities, kids with life threatening illnesses and kids who just need to feel empowered. She is also
involved in the Danville Alamo Garden Club and plans to join the Blackhawk Bloomers. Jim is on the golf committee at the Discovery Counselling Center, supporting their annual October event. He also recently joined the Knights of Columbus at St. Isadore parish. They have two darling pets: a malti-poo named Guinness and a 14-year-old cat named Mario. Guinness is a very active dog who likes to chase the squirrels. There’s never a dull moment with him around. The neighbors laugh when Jim goes outside and calls out “Where’s my Guinness?” Rose and Jim love to travel. During Jim’s recent sabbatical they went on a Safari to Africa. “I had always dreamed of going on safari and we also researched Jim’s great uncle who was bishop of Kilimanjaro in the 1920’s and 30’s. We started with four safaris across Kenya and then visited the school in Tanzania that was named after Jim’s great uncle, Henry Aloysius Gogarty – The Henry Gogarty Memorial Girls’ Secondary school. Jim’s great uncle had traveled from Tanzania to Rome to formally sponsor The Sisters of
Our Lady of Kilimanjaro. We also visited the school and during a special assembly, the girls sang their school song, which was very moving. We went to the home Jim’s uncle helped build for the sisters. It was very emotional as everyone was excited and happy to meet a relative of their patriarch. Prayers were said for us in Swahili and we were treated like celebrities,” remembers Rose. This June they visited Monaco and France, sailing on a Rhone river cruise and culminating with several days in Paris. Last year they traveled with friends on a river cruise in Vietnam and Cambodia. A trip in 2020 is already booked with Star Clippers to Croatia and Montenegro leaving out of Venice with a side trip to Rome. The Gogartys really have seen the world, but they always love coming home to Blackhawk.

Speaker Series: Harry Sherrard “Brooklands”
@Blackhawk Museum Brooklands, the world’s first purpose built race circuit, opened in 1907, and was the birthplace of British motorsport. Powerful and spectacular cars raced on its dauntingly steep banking, and it was the location of the first British Grand Prix. But Brooklands was much more than a great sporting arena. It was also central to the golden days of land speed record attempts, and Malcolm Campbell and John Cobb developed their record breaking machines there. Moreover, Brooklands was a major centre for aircraft design, construction and flight testing for over 80 years, and Brooklands aircraft have broken numerous height, distance and speed records. As the design and production site for the Wellington bomber and Hurricane
10
fighter, Brooklands played a crucial role in the Second World War. Post war, much of the design and manufacturing of the revolutionary supersonic passenger aircraft, Concorde, took place at Brooklands. Today, Brooklands continues as an award winning active museum, dedicated to preserving its motoring and aviation past. Harry has been involved at Brooklands for many years, and he makes regular appearances as a museum speaker. His talk covers the absorbing history of Brooklands, from its conception to the present day. Time: 10:30-12:30pm

Golf Destinations
Tucson: Ventana Canyon Golf Resort – Canyon Course By Chuck Fox, Owner, Quintessential Golf, Resident since 2012
V
isual splendor, all-natural design, unusual tranquility and perfect conditioning make this a rewarding experience.
We decided to try something different than the usual Scottsdale on our Arizona get-away. Our trip to Tucson included a much-anticipated visit to the venerable Ventana Canyon Golf Club. The views, tranquility and conditioning at this semi-private club are stunning. Two hours southeast of the Phoenix airport on Interstate Highway 10, it’s only 30 mins off the freeway in northern Tucson at the base of the Santa Catalina mountains. We checked into the incredible Lowes Ventana Canyon Golf Resort which allows access to the private courses. Jonathan Tisch, the CEO of Lowes, took a personal interest to build a resort which incorporated the fragile plant and animal habitat rather than spoiling that balance. None of the 3,500 saguaro cacti on the property were destroyed, and all riparian habitats are intact. Opening in 1984 it was the “first environmentally conceived resort in North America” according to Architectural Digest. Architect Tom Fazio masterfully integrated the golf courses into the ecosystem of the area. Ventana Canyon Golf & Racquet Club comprises two acclaimed 18-hole courses. Mountain Course is #16 in Arizona on Golf Magazines ranking, while the Canyon Course is #25. They incorporate the member clubhouse into the AAA four-diamond Lodge at Ventana Canyon providing guest access to these magnificent golf courses. A separate shop at Loews Resort makes it easier to manage tee times and shop for golf apparel. At present, the courses alternate daily between member play and resort play. The size of the well-manicured practice range is immense which allows them to maintain the excellent turf conditions on the range. We spent hours tuning up our game on the range and a well-groomed short game area.
The Canyon Course
We played the Canyon course gold tees (6299 yards) on a pleasant 65-degree day. Five sets of teeing grounds plus three combo yardages on the card provide eight course-length options. Conditioning is impeccable. The grainy greens have a meaningful impact on break and speed. Also, elevation changes and distances between holes make a cart a necessity. Despite firm and fast greens, it was difficult to get the ball to the hole going against the grain. Subtle breaks on these large greens combined with the impact of the grain caused three threeputts on the outward nine. Learning that enabled four one-putts on the back side. When Fazio added fairway bunkers, they were usually on one-side to protect a dogleg. The green-side bunkers can be steep. We found the variety of long holes and short holes refreshing as no two holes seemed similar. We love courses that incorporate short Par 4s for the risk/reward options. We found three short Par 4s around 300 yards. A birdie to start the back nine at the 314-yard dogleg right Par 4 Hole #10 was a good start. The front nine and the back nine of the Canyon course
Golf House – An Oasis
are separated by the Mountain course. Hence, the distance from the ninth green to the tenth tee is significant. We would never have found it without the printed directions available near the ninth green. With four short/medium length Par 3s, inevitably, there would be two long Par 4s. Regardless, after a well-struck drive and 4-hybrid, I rolled in a six-foot putt for a birdie on the 452-yard Par 4 Hole #15. That was sweet. As shown in the photo, a three-shot finishing Par 5 has the green framed by the Loews Resort and the hillside. A gap wedge to three feet completed a three birdie back nine. If it weren’t for some serious tree trouble on the seventeen that resulted in a triple bogey, this would have been an incredible back nine for this golfer. Dazzling mountain views are everywhere. We will be back to play the Mountain course and stay in The Lodge. A mix of demanding Par 4s and short, intriguing Par 4s coupled with the visual splendor, tranquility, and perfect conditioning make this an easy decision. See high resolution photos and this course profile on the website at www.quintessentialgolf.com/destinations/ventana-canyon-golf.
If You Go:
Course Info: The Ventana Canyon Golf & Racquet Club is a semiprivate club with 36 holes comprising the Canyon and Mountain 18-hole courses. Guests of the Lodge and adjacent Loews hotel enjoy access to the golf courses. Access alternates between resort play and member play each day. Fees: Winter: $159 am, $99 noon, $79 2pm Yardage: Five sets of tees span from 4939 yards to 6836 yards (71.9/139). Location - In the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona. About 115 miles south of the Phoenix airport and 20 miles north of the Tucson airport. Lodging - The clubhouse is in the Lodge at Ventana Canyon. The separate Loews Ventana Canyon Resort is next to the course.

Ingredients • 4 tablespoons turbinado raw powdered sugar, divided • 1 tablespoon cinnamon, divided • 2 eggs, slightly beaten • 2 tablespoons olive oil • ¾ cup sour cream OR Greek yogurt • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda (to be mixed with sour cream for 10 minutes) • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 ½ cups organic zucchini, trim off ends, rinse and brush the skin under water, pat-dry, shred • 2 cups all-purpose flour (organic, unbleached flour is my preference) • 1 teaspoon sea salt OR to taste • ½ cup walnut, coarsely chopped Mix 1 tablespoon sugar and ½ tablespoon cinnamon together, evenly sprinkle half of this mixture over the greased bottom of loaf-pan; tap to remove any excess. In a medium mixing bowl combine and mix wet ingredients (eggs, olive oil, sour cream mixture, vanilla and zucchini), set aside. In a large mixing bowl, sift dry ingredients (flour, sea salt, remaining half of sugar and cinnamon mixture and 3 tablespoon sugar). Gradually stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients. Fold in walnuts. Spoon batter into loaf-pan and spread evenly. Place on the middle rack of preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in the loaf pan for 10 minutes before removing. Cool completely on cooling rack prior to slicing. Take this beautiful bread to your neighbor and friend. Note: If bread appears to be rising unevenly, rotate pan. A slice of zucchini bread can be toasted very well. Holistic Journey: A good journey begins with a single step towards ascending the ladder of great love. © 2018 Parisa Z. Ambwani-------All rights reserved www.enlightenedrecipes.com 12

Winter Rodent Proofing Your Home By Linda Kralik, Resident since 1984, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Drysdale Properties
A
s the temperatures drop and the winter winds bring the winter storms and the arctic chill, we begin to leave the summer outdoor fun and start the winter hibernation of indoor living. So, let’s picture all of the things you love about winter and living indoors. The wonderful aroma of cookies baking in the oven, the family meals in the kitchen, taking time to read a good book by the crackling fire and especially enjoying hot cocoa under the warmth of a blanket. These are the best of winter indoors. Your home is your shelter from the winter storms and your fortress; it is the ultimate winter destination. It is your opportunity to be warm, dry, comfortable, and well-fed. Your castle. However, these are also the very reasons that rodents and pests are looking to invade your fortress. Here are a few ideas to keep your home protected from the winter invasion of rodents and creepy-crawly pests. Living next to Open Space, it comes as no surprise that there are numbers of wild life species ready to find comfort in your home. The most common rodent is the rat, frequently looking for an access point to camp out for the winter. What rats really seek out above all else is a food and water source. They are comfortable in dark and damp spaces, so one of their favorite hiding spots is the woodpile. As the wood pile is usually stacked next to the house, nearest to the fireplace door, the rodents use this as the first site for home access. They hide within the stacks looking for an access where they can gnaw through any weak spot getting them in. To eliminate this access, remove the wood stack to an open area at least 20 feet away from the house. Another entry area where rodents enter the home is through small openings such as vents and chimney pipes. Rats have an ability to enter through a hole that is only ½ inch in diameter! Secure all vent covers and confirm that the chimney has a cap. This is a relatively easy fix, but it is important to use a cover made of wire, not mesh, to keep rodents out. They can gnaw right through the mesh!
Once those rodents gain access to a warm and comfortable space they begin looking for a food source. They are blessed with an incredible sense of smell and now your kitchen and pantry is their grocery store. Review your food storage areas and place all food items in an airtight container. If you want to add an extra deterrent, you could even plant scents that rats find offensive like peppermint oil, or bay leaf, on a shelf inside. Mice and rats have an incredible ability for squeezing themselves through tiny holes that seem to defy the laws of physics. Often these critters can enter the house by squeezing right under the door itself! The best defense to this intrusion is to install a door sweep which seals the gap between your door and the floor. In addition, this sweep will also help retain heat and regulate temperature inside your home. Be sure to secure door sweeps on all exterior doors. The above remedies will help prevent a rodent invasion, but what about the Creepy-crawlies? It seems that all of Blackhawk is one big ant hill and an invasion of ants to so disheartening. The best deterrent for ants and spiders looking for a warm dry place is a good pest control company doing regular home pest maintenance. Monthly pest control spraying is an inexpensive cure for those four and sex legged creatures. I hope you find these ideas interesting and useful. Please feel free to call me regarding any ideas in my articles. LK

Overactive Bladder By Dr. Asha Bajaj, Resident Since 1986
N
ovember is overactive bladder awareness month .Older men and women suffer from this problem, often making them feel embarrassed and withdrawing from their social activities Experiencing occasional incontinence doesn’t mean you have an overactive bladder. Urine leakage can happen for other reasons, like if you’re laughing too hard. You may also experience loss of urine if you’ve been fighting the urge to urinate for an extended period of time. Incontinence can occur in both men and women at any age, but it is more common among women and older people, affecting about 30% of elderly women and 15% of elderly men. Although incontinence is more common among older people, it is not a normal part of aging. Incontinence may be sudden and temporary, as when a person is taking a drug that has a diuretic effect, or it may be chronic. An overactive bladder is determined by the frequency and urgency of urination. Symptoms include: • • • •
an urgent and uncontrollable need to urinate frequent involuntary loss of urine; frequent urination (more than eight times in a 24-hour period) waking up more than once a night to use the bathroom
Urinary Sphincter Some treatment options for overactive bladder are: Pelvic floor physical therapy There are physical therapists that specialize in the muscles of the pelvis. Through targeted muscle exercises and strengthening, they can help manage a variety of urinary problems, including urgency, frequency, and nighttime symptoms. These include Kegel’s exercises. To identify the pubo-coccygeal muscles, a therapist might use a vaginal cone or tampon and ask you to hold it in place. You can also exercise this muscle by stopping and controlling the flow of urine when you are voiding your bladder. Bio-feedback and electric stimulation are some other modalities available to pelvic floor specialists. Medication Medicines that treat overactive bladder focus on two effects: relieving symptoms and reducing episodes of urge and incontinence. These medicines include tolterodine (Detrol, Detrol LA), trospium (Sanctura), and mirabegron (Myrbetriq). These medications may cause some side effects, including dry eyes, dry mouth and constipation. Botox Small doses of Botox can temporarily paralyze or weaken bladder muscles. This stops them from contracting too often, which can reduce symptoms of overactive bladder. The effects of the injection typically last six to eight months, so you may need repeated treatments. Nerve stimulation This procedure changes the electrical signal of the nerves that carry impulses to the bladder. The electrical stimulation can be performed using a small wire inserted into the low back or a small needle inserted through the skin of the lower leg. Though it hasn’t been clearly established, some research has shown this can relieve the frequency and urgency of an overactive bladder. Take control of the problem and do not let the problem take over your life. Get the help you need and start living your life to the fullest, get back with friends and family and manage this pesky issue once and for all.

Choosing and Hanging Right Artwork For Your Home By Sheeja Nair, Interior Designer, Raashi Design, LLC
A
rtwork is essential to finish any room design. A perfect piece of artwork can tie a whole room together. But the task of choosing the right artwork for the space and hanging it can get hard. Here are a few tips to get you started. Choosing the Artwork Art can be anything, from an original painting to a sculptural object. The key is to make sure that the art works with the color scheme of the space. If you have a favorite piece of art, you can use that as inspiration and starting point for your scheme. One big piece of art or a grouping of multiple smaller ones give the best effect. Placing the Artwork The center of your artwork should almost always be at eye-level, around 57-60” above the floor, in order to create the best viewing experience. This works great for open wall spaces and above lowlevel furniture. But for taller furniture pieces or mantle, mount the art around 4-6” from the top. And it is aesthetically pleasing if the width of the art work is around 2/3rd the width of the sofa or table above which it is mounted.
Lighting the Artwork Lighting your artwork is crucial to how a piece of art is viewed and there are many ways to do so. UV radiation and heat can damage a painting, so opt for LED lights. The beam should cover the artwork and it should be bright enough to see the colors and textures. As a guideline, lighting should be angled at 30˚ to reduce glare. Reduce this angle if the art has interesting textures.

Have a Safe Holiday Season By Aaron “Wally” Barger, Resident since 2012
T
his is a very special time of the year for families, relatives, friends, and neighbors. May this Holiday Season be especially wonderful for you and all you hold so dear. Along with the parties, gatherings, and family time be careful on the highways and neighborhood streets. Be extra cautious during this time of year while driving or walking in your neighborhood. The number of vehicle accidents is substantially higher during this season. The Blackhawk Police, County Sheriff’s deputies, and the Highway Patrol officers are on a state of heighten awareness concerning abnormal driver behavior. Maintaining a safe driving speed, driving defensively, and carefully observing all traffic and pedestrian activity around you will provide a greater level of safety and security. If you plan to be away during the holidays, make sure you notify your neighbors of the specific days you will be out of the area. Provide your neighbors your cell phone number and email address. It is a good idea to notify the Blackhawk Police Department, so
they can keep an eye on your property. One other suggestion: let your neighbors and the police know if anyone, such as your gardener, housekeeper, or guest, will be in your house while you are away. House checks by your neighbors or the Blackhawk Police Department is an extra layer of caution during your absence. If you have any questions regarding home security or other law enforcement concerns, contact the Blackhawk Police at 925-7361018 or 925-646-2441. Fabulous London 2019: Food, Golf and Fun By Mike L. McColgan, Resident since 1990
R
ecently our family had the pleasure to visit the fascinating city of London, England. London is the largest city in England and is also its capital city with over 8 million people. It is also one of the most popular tourist cities in the world. Highlights of the trip included an elegant opening lunch at famous chef Alain Ducasse’s 3-star Michelin London restaurant in The Dorchester. We had the pleasure of dining at his Eiffel Tower restaurant in Paris a few years ago. Featured was a 3-course lunch that included 2 glasses of French wine. As a special treat after our lunch and before dessert, we enjoyed the famous ”English Stilton Cheese” served table side and paired with a Madeira port. Executive Chef Jean-Philippe Blondet gave us a tour of his elaborate kitchen and served us his famous baba rum cake with Earl Grey tea to complete this fabulous foodie experience. We took a unique London Rock Music Tour which was great. From David Bowie to Pink Floyd and the Kinks, London has been home to some of the biggest rock bands in history. The tour featured Tin Pan Alley, where The Rolling Stones cut their first record, the famous Abbey Road Studios and the road crossing from the famous Beatles album cover Abbey Road. Paul McCartney’s house, Ringo Starr’s House, Jimmy Page’s house and local pubs and recording studios where many of the famous London Rock Bands hung out were also part of the tour. It provided a full picture of the London Rock scene. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a different perspective of London.
Brabazon Trophy. The London Golf Club has also hosted Regional Open qualifying and the European Tour qualifying school. They have tees to challenge all skill levels. The club prides itself with an ‘attention to detail’ and also features an excellent restaurant and practice facility.
Several other places we visited included The Churchill War Rooms, Buckingham Palace and the Royal Mews, the Thames River Cruise, which has a view of all the sites of London. The cruise is a hop on hop off tour allowing you to spend more time on various London sites that interest you. We also attended the theatre to see Tina, which was fabulous. Finally, shopping at Harrods is of course another ‘must do’ experience.
We concluded this fantastic trip with dinner at famous Michelin chef and TV personality Gordon Ramsey’s ‘Lucky Cat’ Restaurant.
Just 25 miles from the center of the most-visited capital is the London Golf Club in the heart of the beautiful Kent countryside termed the “Garden of England.” It is the home of 2 world class courses. The Heritage and The International which are masterpieces designed by Jack Nicklaus and his design team. The courses opened in 1994 with a sensational skins match between Jack Nicklaus, Britain’s Tony Jacklin, and Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros. Seve was the winner with 10 skins. The International Course has hosted many professional and amateur tournaments including the 2014 Volvo World Match play and 2017
If you are a Golfer, we would highly recommend a break from the hustle bustle of London and visit the scenic Kent countryside at the London Golf Club.
For more information and to make a tee time go to: www.londongolf.co.uk
Located in Mayfair, and a short walk from The Grosvenor House where we stayed, this Asian inspired restaurant is one of 15 Ramsey restaurants located in London. This restaurant just opened in June and has an elegant and modern decor. The food is made in an open kitchen and designed to share with your friends. We especially enjoyed the short rib buns, pumpkin tempura, pork belly, shiitake and pork kamameshi and assortment of unique and tasty desserts. We truly felt like 3 ‘Lucky Cats’ after enjoying an exciting full week in the fascinating city of London. By the way, it never rained the entire week we visited the city. September is prime weather time for touring. “London Rocks” with a worldly energy filled with lots of history, restaurants, shopping, tour attractions and classy kind people. We definitely will return soon.

Living with Migraine By Alicia Choquette, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery
F
or some, migraines can be a minor nuisance, but for others they are a disabling, chronic condition that can wreak havoc on your life. If you are one of the 38 million Americans with migraine, you may be wondering, “what’s causing my migraine attacks? And is there anything I can do to stop them?” While migraine is the most common neurological condition, it is often misunderstood or incorrectly diagnosed as a sinus or tension headache. If you have a headache accompanied by sensitivity to light, sound or odors, or if you get nauseous or vomit, you may have migraine and should talk to a specialist to get an accurate diagnosis. There are many treatment options available for acute attacks and preventative management that will decrease the number of headache days per month. The good news for migraineurs is there are new treatment options arising each year. If migraines are prevalent in your family, your genetics can be a contributing factor. Though we can’t change our genetic makeup, we can change the environmental influences on those genes. By reducing certain factors and creating a healthy lifestyle we may be able to diminish the frequency and intensity of attacks. Four
healthy habits a migraine patient should focus on are: 1) adequate fluid hydration with minimal caffeine intake, 2) regular exercise on most days of the week, 3) adequate sleep, and 4) proper nutrition. Avoid triggers such as alcohol, sulfites, smoked meats, chocolate and MSG. Other contributing factors may include hormonal fluctuations and change in barometric pressure (i.e. fog, extreme heat, or cold). Often for women, headaches improve after menopause, but this is not always the case. When seen at the Blackhawk Migraine Center, we start by identifying the impact of your headaches on your life. The frequency and severity of your headaches will help us design an appropriate treatment plan. If you are missing work, school, or family functions throughout the month, a prevention medication is generally warranted. Effective prevention may include antidepressants, anti-convulsant, anti-hypertensive medications, Botox, CGRP antagonists, and even migraine surgery. Onabotulinumtoxin A, the same Botox that smooths facial wrinkles, also prevents the muscle contractions that can trigger your migraines. Botox is administered roughly every three months in seven specific head and neck muscles. A new class of medications called CGRP antagonists (Calcitonin Gene-related Peptide) was FDA approved in 2018 for the treatment of migraine. CGRP is a large protein that transmits pain signals along the trigeminal nerve into the brain stem and through the brain itself during a migraine. The three new FDA approved medications help block the release of CGRP, preventing migraines. These medications are monthly self-injectables. Migraine surgery refers to surgical decompression of one or several nerves in the head and neck which have been shown to trigger migraine symptoms. Migraine surgery is a highly individualized procedure. Studies have shown that up to 95% of patients undergoing surgery experience improvement or complete elimination of migraine headaches. With one in four households affected by migraine, the most important thing to remember is that you are not alone, and with many effective treatment options available, there is hope. Blackhawk Plastic Surgery Migraine Center is here to help ease the burden of living with migraine by customizing a treatment plan that works for you. Physician Assistant Alicia Choquette specializes in migraine management. After five years with a prominent neurology practice in San Diego, she joined Blackhawk Plastic Surgery in July 2019 to help with the expansion of the Blackhawk Migraine Center.

Know Your Income By Joe Morgan, CFP®, CFA, Principal: JWM Wealth Management, LLC, Resident since 2004
L
ast month we discussed knowing what you have, which is a necessity before planning how to move forward. Another important part of your resources is your income. Here, we are looking at all of the different income types you will have going forward. This includes your salaries, bonuses, and any stock that you were awarded. In addition, consider how your stock vests as well as whether it will continue to vest when you retire. There are also various sources of income in retirement which typically come in the form of pensions. Social Security, while not enough to live on, can be an important income source as well as any pensions from your employers throughout your life. Importantly, there are decisions to be made around these pensions that determine how much you will get and for how long. Particularly, we need to consider a “single life” payout vs. a “joint and survivor” payout for any pensions. For Social Security, there is the all-important decision of when to file. The government gives you a big fat 8% per year raise for delaying, which can be considerable if longevity is a concern.
All of these need to be considered in conjunction with your spending. For example, if you want to push back filing for Social Security to get a maximum payout, you need to understand how you will meet your expenses in the meantime and how that might affect your total wealth throughout your years. This is a great bird’s-eye view of determining your income to get things started, but let’s take a deeper dive into what you will have to spend in retirement. Join me over on my blog at https:// jwmwealth.com/blogs/thoughts-do-you-know-your-income and let’s start calibrating your path to clarity! Exploring the real YOSEMITE... Tuolumne Meadows in the sky... By Sonia Lamba, Resident since 2015
Y
osemite is truly famous for its stunning, amazing and jaw-dropping views: from Glacier point to Olmsted point to Tunnel view. For my daughter’s 16th Birthday in October, we drove to Yosemite for a weekend getaway. Like every other visit, this time too we stayed in tent cabins in Curry Village-an incredible, unique, scenic location just below Half Dome and Glacier Point. These tents are more like glamping without the chic decor. But they are very charming and a good way to connect with the nature. After two nights, we drove 1.5 hours to Tuolumne. It’s a hidden gem to the north of Yosemite and at 8,600 feet, it’s one of the largest high elevation meadows in the Sierra Nevada. It is quieter and a good escape to avoid the crowd. Its gorgeous open spaces, trees and lakes are awe-inspiring and just perfect, not to miss hundreds of orange sulphur butterflies fluttering by. A short two-mile hike on John Muir Trail, a lovely flat troll on a scenic meadow, surrounded by the majestic Cathedral Peak and Lembert Dome, led us to Soda Springs near the historical Parsons Lodge. Carbonated bubbling water out of the ground was very fascinating. The water tasted like iron, which I immediately spit out and got good laughs from my kids.
Curry Village - good times with bear necessities.

Tuolumne meadows - summer is a joy to visit, while its covered much of the year under a coat of snow.
Tenaya Lake - a beauty in true sense!
On the way out, on Tioga road, we stopped at Tenaya Lake (at 8,150ft) with a small sandy beach, for snacks and couple of more shots-it’s too stunning not to. It’s so peaceful and refreshing here. The crystal-clear blue waters are surrounded by amazing views of granite hoods. Worth a stop! Back home, if I am looking for day tripping and scenic adventure, I drive up the beguiling Mount Diablo in Blackhawk. It is surrounded by rolling hills, flat valleys and the views from the summit are so impressive.
Sonia Lamba As an aspiring photographer, I have always loved taking beautiful photos of my friends and family, nature and travels. After having a fulfilling career in finance in New York, I moved to California in 2014 where my love for photography turned into an invigorating passion. Moving to gorgeous Blackhawk has further enriched and blossomed my love for the camera. I take my camera everywhere, regardless of how short the distance is. Knowing me, there is always a photo opportunity!

Natural Disasters and Your Swimming Pool By Jon Lubrano, President, Atlantis Pools Inc.
W
ith all the recent news regarding power outages, fires and earthquakes, I thought it would be good to address your personal swimming pool and how it could potentially be an asset during an emergency. In a fire or other emergency where there is no electricity or clean water, having gallons of pool water at your disposal can be a lifesaver, as long as you are prepared to use it. I recommend investing in a small, gas powered pump to quickly transport the water where you need it. In addition to a pump, you will need hoses if using your pool water to try and put out a fire. The pump will provide ample water pressure and the hoses will transport the water to your fire. If there were a situation where access to clean drinking water was limited, your pool water could be an emergency water source. Pool water is filtered and is chlorinated, (even a salt pool water is drinkable since the content is only 3000 ppm). You just need to be able to transport the water to where you need it like a shower or kitchen and a pump and hoses can make that happen.
I would advise purchasing some type of water filter for purifying the pool water, if consuming and the water has been sitting for days with no filtration. Hopefully your pool will only be used for your enjoyment, but it is better to be prepared for any disaster. Want assistance is selecting the right pump and hoses? E
ast Bay residents Steve and Judy Padis are even more inspired to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of Padis Jewelry with the grand opening of Forevermark Walnut Creek, the first Padis Jewelry venture in their hometown. It’s the beautiful surroundings and wonderful sense of community that brought the Padis family to the East Bay as residents over 40 years ago. With four children who all attended St. Isidore in Danville and participated in sports and activities throughout the area, this new store truly feels like coming home for the Padises. Padis Jewelry’s newest location, a Forevermark Diamond Boutique, is located in the bustling shopping area of Broadway Plaza, right in between Brighton and Free People. Padis brings the same exceptional selection, value, and customer service to Walnut Creek that they have offered to their jewelry clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Napa Valley for many years.
