language therapists of Bangladeshi heritage.

Asma's professional evolution was not merely a career trajectory but a profound personal voyage. Initially

working as a Therapy Assistant, she witnessed the theoretical concepts of her studies manifest into tangible transformations in individuals' lives. This firsthand experience underscored the importance of real-world engagement in understanding the complexities of the profession and the needs of those individuals receiving support.

Over the span of 25 years, Asma traversed through various NHS and Third Sector organisations, specialising in areas such as Early Years, Bilingualism, and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH). Each endeavour deepened

her commitment to evidence-based practices and fueled her passion for effecting positive change.

A pivotal moment in Asma's journey came with the establishment of Chatterbug in 2008. Driven by a fervent desire to address gaps in speech, language, and communication support, as Asma’s family grew welcoming 3 wonderful children, Chatterbug has also grown and evolved into a nationally recognised entity, boasting a formidable team of 50 and standing as a trusted NHS partner.

However, Asma's journey transcended professional milestones, delving into a profound realisation of her identity as an Autistic individual. Embracing her neurodivergence, she discovered that her unique perspective and problem-solving skills were her greatest assets. This newfound self-awareness ignited a passion for innovation, leading her to craft services tailored to the diverse needs of children and young people.

Amidst triumphs and challenges, Asma's dedication was honoured with the ASLTIP Leadership award, a testament to her unwavering commitment to empowering those with SLCN. This accolade not only recognised her achievements but also symbolised the transformative power of perseverance and purpose.

In the narrative of Asma Khanum's journey lies a profound testament to the power of passion, purpose, and unwavering dedication in effecting positive change and empowering voices that deserve to be heard. Asma's mission remains resolute: to ensure that every child with SLCN receives the highest quality support, precisely when and where they need it.

Final Piece of £8.45m Secured for Northern Impact Fund 2

The north’s most prolific and longest standing social investor, Key Fund, has secured £8.45m for the Northern Impact Fund 2, having recently finalised the last piece of funding from the Mercers’ Charitable Foundation (to which the Mercers’ Company is sole trustee).

The fund is open until 2027 to social and community enterprises, charities, and co-operatives operating in the north and the midlands, with investment available from £5,000 to £150,000.

It follows the success of the first Northern Impact Fund 1, which ran from 2016 to 2022 and supported almost 200 organisations, with over £9m of funding.

Key Fund, a social enterprise itself, provides flexible loans alongside grants to help enterprises start up or grow, with the aim of them becoming more sustainable in trading and impact terms.

Matt Smith, CEO of Key Fund, said: “The Northern Impact Fund is based on a core long-standing product we’ve been delivering since 2002 and is hugely popular, which is why we have secured another round of funds to invest. It’s in demand because it’s so straightforward, with a grant attached, that really helps organisations to grow their trading activity whilst preserving social impact.”

The grant element is designed to offset the cost of social impact, while enterprises use the loan to focus on the development or growth of trading activity. The fund is designed to support a business at all stages, from cash-flow, working capital or asset development and purchase.

Matt said: “The grant helps de-risk growth and can be a transformative step-change for a business.”

Veterans at Ease, a Northeast charity benefited from the first Northern Impact Fund. It was facing huge demand for its services, providing counselling to armed forces veterans, but struggled to secure funding and faced closure. It decided to establish a charity shop trading arm to generate income to fund its charitable work, and also provide volunteering, training, and employment opportunities to veterans.

The Northern Impact Fund 1 provided the initial grant and loan investment to open the first shop in Whitley Bay in 2018. Key Fund provided a further £100k investment in December 2021 to expand. It now has six shops in the Northeast, Tees Valley, and Norfolk.

Key Fund is one of the largest regionally based social investors in England. It was founded in South Yorkshire in 1999 to stimulate locally led regeneration in response to the collapse of the coal and steel industries. It began as a grant giving organisation, before launching a pioneering blended fund in 2002. In the last 24 years, Key Fund has invested £76.6m in over 3,100 organisations with £483m of impact.

Matt added: “We’ve developed a lot of investment funds over the years F

many with lots of flexibility built in, but the Northern Impact Funds are undoubtedly the most in demand and have been for many years due to their simplicity. The grant element is provided up front and is not tied to performance or awarded retrospectively, so provides certainty for applicants; they know exactly how much they are repaying and when, from the start. It embodies what Key Fund is about, making sure that we

are clear and providing the right money at the right time – this is our central mission.”

The Northern Impact Fund 2 has been made possible by support from a collaboration of funders: Access - the Foundation for Social Investment, Better Society Capital, Barrow Cadbury Trust, The Places Foundation, the Regional Growth Fund with Unity Trust Bank, Joseph

Rowntree Foundation, and the Mercer’s Company.

Key Fund works across all sectors, from green energy, health and social care, employment, education and training, housing, the Arts, and sports and leisure.

Leeds-based Parklane Plowden grows family team with newbarrister

Leeds and Newcastle-based Parklane Plowden Chambers has welcomed a new tenant to its 40-strong family team.

Emma Gough who was called to the Bar in 2004, specialises in private children’s cases alongside financial remedy proceedings.

She joins PLP from Newcastle and Yorkbased Dere Street Barristers where she practiced for 19 years.

In its 2024 rankings, barristers’ directory, Chambers & Partners, placed Parklane Plowden as Band 1, the highest ranking a chamber can achieve, across family and children and Band 2 for family: matrimonial finance.

Within her family law practice, Emma has been instructed in cases involving alienation, intractable hostility and international relocation.

She covers hearings at all levels from First Hearing and Dispute Resolution Appointment through to Final Hearings. Emma also acts in cases relating to care proceedings and nonaccidental injuries.

Commenting on her new tenancy, Emma said: “Parklane Plowden’s family practice has a well-established reputation throughout the circuit and is seeing impressive growth.

“I’m pleased to be joining such a progressive set and work with a team who are committed to helping make a positive difference in their casework.”

Formed in 2007 following the merger of Parklane Chambers in Leeds and

Plowden Chambers in Newcastle, Parklane Plowden is home to 113 members.

Senior practice director, Stephen Render, commented: “Emma has a vast amount of experience dealing with complex, sensitive cases which require unique skills to support clients and ensure successful outcomes.

“We are pleased to have her on the family set which has seen significant expansion over the last 12 months with new door tenants and former pupils accepting tenancy.”

Chambers & Partners also placed Parklane Plowden as Band 1 across its chancery; clinical negligence; employment; and personal injury practice areas. Additionally, the set was ranked Band 2 for inquests and inquiries.

The 2024 edition of legal directory

The Legal 500 ranks Parklane Plowden Chambers as a tier one barristers’ set across five practice areas. These include chancery, probate and tax; clinical negligence; employment; family and children law and personal injury.

In addition, The Legal 500 recommends 79 of the set’s barristers across 11 practice areas.

Maven Capital Partners, supporting female founders in the North

Maven Capital Partners is a leading private equity firm, backing growing businesses of all sizes across a range of sectors, providing the essential capital and expertise to unlock potential and help accelerate growth.

Through our partnership approach, we support entrepreneurial and ambitious management teams to help unlock potential and achieve transformational levels of growth.

I joined Maven as an Investment Manager as part of the Northeast regional investment team based in our Newcastle and Durham. My main responsibilities include deal origination and execution across the Northeast of England.

The region is home to aspiring talent and innovation representing a diverse range of sectors. I work closely with businesses interested in growth funding to achieve their ambitions. With a strong network of regional offices with broad experience and skillsets, we utilise our broad range of expertise to tailor funding proposals that work for each individual business, as well as adding significant value to the companies we back.

Maven has also been appointed Fund Manager for NPIF IIMaven Equity Finance, part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund II. This is an equity fund which can provide up to £5 million of equity finance to all stages of businesses based in the Northeast of England to support with a wide range of business finance needs. This could include increasing headcount, expansion into new markets and overseas, funding for capex and investment into R&D and product development.

As a passionate advocate of female

entrepreneurs and founders, I have been involved in several initiatives supporting women entrepreneurs across the North. I was honoured to be named as a Finalist in the Northern Power Women 2024 Future List earlier this year and recently joined the Lifted Ventures Project – Regional High Growth Board to help support female founders at all stages of their business journey.

In March 2024, Maven launched a Female Founders Funding Programme, a programme I am incredibly proud to be part of. It offers valuable resources, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities to women entrepreneurs, assisting them in navigating the complexities of business ownership more effectively. Our programme consists of regional in-person funding workshops and online funding clinics, all delivered by members of the female investment team here at Maven.

Women are integral to Maven and its culture, playing a prominent role in our organisation’s success. The experience and skills brought by women have enriched our business. Working with diverse management teams, we’ve fostered the development of innovative ideas to help solve complex problems. We believe that encouraging and supporting female entrepreneurs and diverse management teams contributes to a more vibrant and inclusive business ecosystem.

We believe that encouraging and supporting female entrepreneurs and diverse management teams contributes to a more vibrant and inclusive business ecosystem...

It is important to ensure that female founders and entrepreneurs have access to the same networks and opportunities as male-led teams as, not only is it the right thing to do, but statistically, companies with diverse management teams are better performing and have lower failure rates. We are committed to ensuring female founders have access to the right tools, resources, and that support is accessible. It has been an honour to work with inspirational female leaders through our Female Founders Programme and the Lifted Project, and I am looking forward to continuing this work with some exciting future projects in the pipeline.

The concept of ‘risk’

Risk is a fluid premise within investing, and that which constitutes low risk for some, may not for others.

With over 32% of the world’s wealth currently held by women, according to the WealthiHer Network, women have a big role to play in the world of investment. However, our own research uncovered significant differences in the approaches of female investors, relative to their male counterparts, particularly when it comes to risk.

Women have shown to be more risk averse, or in some cases risk aware, then men. There are a variety of factors that have contributed to this, the most pertinent being that women have historically been afforded less exposure to investments than men. Our own research at Quilter offers insight into this, with over 64% of our female clients revealing that before working with Quilter, their assets were held entirely in cash.

To qualify how risk is interpreted within investments, a portfolio of investments is typically placed into a risk category, which denotes its risk and return objectives. As such, lower risk portfolios may provide a steady, if unspectacular, return, while higher risk portfolios may generate greater returns but incur periods of higher volatility. All investments fluctuate, and clients should seek to align themselves with the risk level most palatable with their own personal circumstances.

As an industry, it is our responsibility to engage with clients more holistically and ensure they are fully appraised and educated on their investments and the wider markets. We believe

that by working directly with clients to ascertain their true tolerance for risk, we can ensure that each client’s portfolio works to its fullest potential and provides returns relevant to their personal profile.

With this in mind, how should women approach risk in investing and what are the key things to consider?

There are no ‘silver bullets’ for risk

No one asset class is immune to all market conditions, and even those areas typically perceived to be ‘safe havens’ or towards the lower end of the risk spectrum may falter. A demonstration of this can be found in the 2022 UK bond markets.

Bonds, and particularly government bonds, are generally considered to be a lower-risk investment than equities or stocks. As such, defensive portfolios will typically have greater exposure to bonds (also known as fixed interest investments) and rely on their more steady return profile to add value. In a less risk-averse portfolio, the allocation to bonds will have decreased, typically in favour of

equities or alternative investments such as property.

However, bond markets can become volatile, as was the case in late September 2022, when the UK’s thenchancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, unveiled his “minibudget”. The package announced a series of unfunded tax cuts designed to stimulate growth within the UK economy but was rejected outright by the market on fears over sustainability. This led to a mass sell-off in the bond markets and sent the British pound plummeting to an all-time low relative to the US dollar.

This, though a relatively isolated incident, highlights how a conventionally low-risk portfolio may still suffer losses throughout particular market events and periods.

Navigating risk

While studies have shown women to generally favour a lower risk approach to investing, it is important to have a full understanding of the risks associated, and your tolerance to them, before deciding upon an investment path. After careful analysis in conjunction with your investment adviser, it may be that your ability to withstand, and confidence in taking risks is greater than originally expected. Therefore, a higher risk portfolio, with greater return potential, may be more suitable.

recommendations and analysis of public policy issues.

Research topics will include, community cohesion, inclusivity, energy, renewables, environmental, climate change, foreign policy, economics, business development, corporate governance, internationalisation

Northern Powerhouse is growing in strength. To date it has defied definition.F

For some it is about a possible campaign to better connect our towns and cities so their labour markets can act more seamlessly as one. For others it is a recognition of potential too often knocked through the hard years of deindustrialization. Some people consider the ownership, whether it is a government mandate or part of our fabric in the north, powered forward by devolved powers and responsibilities. The truth lies in all these.

Ambition

The Northern Powerhouse is a recognition of the size and capability of the region. The economies of Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, South Yorkshire, Tees Valley, the Northeast and West Yorkshire is a gathering of some 15m people, one million private sector businesses, creating some £304bn of value (2014). This is equivalent to that of Belgium and 20% of the UK whole. With 7 international airports, 12 major ports and 100

universities, the north of England is well-armed with assets and capability. The Northern Powerhouse is also a strategic programme of change to join up these assets. The idea is simply that they will perform better as one functional economic area than as a confederacy with poor connections. Less measurable is the confidence and ambition it has brought. The future focus is increasingly owned by the north of England; for each of us to own and carry forward. Importantly for us, the Northern Powerhouse is a platform for national and global engagement. The British Government has across the world – whether in India, China, Canada to the US –used the Northern Powerhouse narrative as an invitation to promote our world class capabilities and to explore investment opportunities. The North has a long history of fostering innovation. Contributing to nearly 19% of the UK’s GDP, the North represents over 15 million people and more than one million private sector businesses. With over 20 universities, many of them

globally renowned, it presents a great academic and research ecosystem geared to science and technology innovation. Connected to the rest of the world through seven international airports and 12 major ports, it is a high-potential and high-impact region. So, naturally it should attract high business interest and traffic.

Vital

The NPH Ethnic Minority Business Barometer report will be an annual survey of Ethnic Minority owned businesses across the UK’s Northern Powerhouse which will determine their business confidence levels. It will also give a vital insight into emerging economic trends which will help with forecasting and forward planning. The report will cover a range of standard questions from business activity and economic optimism to staff levels, wages and prices charged. Regional and sector insights within the report will provide an extra tier of information, this will give an opportunity to better understand the economic environment relevant to business sector and location.

Ethnic minorities’ refer to all ethnic groups except the white British group. Ethnic minorities include Black, African, Caribbean, Asian and white minorities, such as Jewish, Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller groups. A group within a community which has different national or cultural traditions from the main population.

Life is good for our Northeast Loose Woman

Denise Welch, is an English actress, writer, broadcaster and Loose Woman, born in Tynemouth Northumberland.

Denise has starred in many TV roles including Natalie Barnes in Coronation Street where she eventually became landlady of the famous Rovers Return, Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road, Trish Minniver in Hollyoaks as well as starring roles in Spender, Soldier Soldier and much more. Most recently Denise is on our screens as a long-standing presenter on Loose Women.

Northern Businesswoman editorin-chief Gill Laidler recently caught up with Denise to find out more of this much-loved actor.

Growing up Denise attended school in Whitley Bay and Newcastle before the family moved to County Durham at the age of 13 which took her to Consett Grammar School. “I wasn’t particularly academic, in fact, I would probably describe myself as academically lazy,” she said, “but a light went on in my head when I auditioned for a part in the school play, a production of Finian’s Rainbow, I got the part and as they say, the rest is history.”

“The acting bug had captured Denise and at the age of 17, she contemplated going to teacher training college, but her drama teacher suggested she apply to drama school in London. “My application was successful, and I headed off to Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts where I graduated in 1979, I loved every minute of it, but it was hard with no financial support.

One of Denise’s first professional roles was performing on stage in Yakkety-Yak with the McGann brothers, later joining the Live Theatre Company in Newcastle where she featured in many productions, before heading to Haymarket Theatre in Leicester to star in the musical Greece.

“My first role in television was in the Tyne Tees production of Barriers in 1981 before going on to star in

the hit drama Auf Wiedersehen Pet, where I acted alongside Tim Healy who I went on to marry, Byker Grove with Ant and Dec and BBC’s Spender with Jimmy Nail.”

Denise became a household name in 1993 when she was cast as Marsha Stubbs in ITV’s drama series Soldier Soldier. Owing to her success in

the series, she realised a double-A sided single, Dusty Springfield’s ‘You don’t have to say you love me’ with ‘Cry me a river’ and despite Denise telling us she is an actress, just a singer who can ‘hold a tune’ the record reached number 23 in the UK singles chart.

In 1997 even wider notability called when Denise was cast as Natalie Barnes in the popular Coronation Street. “I was brought in as divorcee who quickly caught the eye of Kevin Webster played by Michael LeVell, who was married to Sally at the time, one of soaps long standing couples.”

However, during her time, as a not so respectable character early in the series she quickly gained the affection of the audience, became the landlady of the Rovers Return. Denise left the soap in 2000 as she was expecting her son and was looking forward to the prospect of spending time with her newborn son. Asked about her former co-star Helen Worth who plays Gail leaving the soap later this year she said, “Helen is a fabulous actor, she is one of Britain’s brilliant actresses who doesn’t get enough credit.

After time out with her son, it wasn’t long before Denise was back on our screens, guest starring in ITVs Where the Heart is and Holby City amongst a host of other well-known shows.

Denise also starred in just one episode of series four of Benidorm. “Despite just being in one episode, alongside my former husband Tim Healey who played Les / Lesley, fans often ask me when I am returning, believing I appeared in the programme more than I was. I played a character called Scary Mary who got herself into a fight with Madge played by Sheila Reid, Mary was a great fun character to play.”

Since then, Denise has played several high-profile television roles but Yorkshire Businesswoman magazine, sister publication to Northern Businesswoman originally caught up with her when she starred in Calendar Girls the Musical at Leeds Grand Theatre in 2018. “I love acting in both the theatre and TV equally, but my favourite ever role has to be the Rise and Fall of Little Voice that won several awards,” she told us.

Many will remember Denise, who

has two sons Louis an actor and Matt, a member of the band The 1975, when she appeared on Dancing on Ice. “Oh that was incredible hard work, but so rewarding,” she told us. “Matt Evers and I managed to stay in until week seven which I was thrilled about.” When we asked Denise if she would ever go into the jungle she said “no, that’s not for me, I would be too scared of the trials!”

Although Denise now lives between Cheshire and London with her husband Lincoln, she maintains strong links with the Northeast and tries to get back to the area as often as possible. “I have links with the

charity Children Northeast, a charity who support children living in poverty in the area. In the past year alone, the charity has supported almost 4,000 babies, children and young people and they have reached out to over 1000 families.”

We couldn’t close off the interview without commenting on Denise’s appearance, we think she looks amazing, complimenting her on her lovely skin and hair. “Well, I’ve not always looked so good,” she commented. “I am 12 years sober and not smoked for the last eleven years. But I have come out the other side and I am now loving life and feeling better than ever. Life is good.

Mamma Social Co secures £70,000 investment

Mamma Social Co, a Peterlee-based business that provides support, advice and guidance to new mothers across the UK, has secured £70,000 from Business Enterprise Fund (BEF). The investment includes a £45,000 loan from BEF’s £1m fund for the Northeast backed by Ceniarth and a £25,000 Start Up Loan from the British Business Bank.

The business was started in 2022 by Kayleigh Laverick, a mother of two who found herself feeling isolated and lonely after her second child. Struggling with life changes, Kayleigh reached out to local mothers to arrange a meetup and walk. The next day, Kayleigh met with 9 other mums at, Castle Eden Dene. This event confirmed to Kayleigh that new mothers needed more support and led to the formation of Mamma Social Co which offers a free membership programme.

Following its launch, Mamma Social Co supported mums with weekly Talks and Walks along with Walks and Plays which were hosted by over 50 individual parent leads. Today, the business supports

La Spaghettataauthentic italian in the heart of Durham

Nestled in the bustling heart of Durham, La Spaghettata delivers an authentic slice of Italy without draining your bank account.

This hidden gem offers an inviting atmosphere that transports you straight to the sunny streets of Sardinia, making it perfect for anyone seeking a real Italian experience without having to hop on a plane. What makes La Spaghettata stand out from the moment you step in is the warm and welcoming

service, and fitting interior. There's no need to stress about reservations here. We waited outside in a line that went down swiftly, and despite the restaurant being lively, we were

greeted by the team who made us feel like part of the family. Now onto the food - simply delicious!

Our meal kicked off with a comforting bowl of Cream of Chicken, rich and seasoned to perfection. Then, the star of the show arrived: Spaghetti Bolognese that was as traditional as it gets, with a

hearty, slow-cooked meat sauce that clung to the pasta in the most satisfying way. For something lighter, we also indulged in two Garlic Pizzas, with just the right amount of crispiness and garlic tang. Another highlight was the Chicken Pasta, which was creamy and bursting

with flavour. The generous portion

sizes meant we were thoroughly satisfied without feeling stuffed. The meal was rounded off by two glasses of smooth Italian wine and a refreshing cocktail, all of which brought a bit of indulgence without breaking the bank. Speaking of costs, the bill came to around £70 for 3 people including 3 mains, 2 starters and drinks. For a feast that could have easily been much more expensive elsewhere. The portions were generous, the quality was top-notch, and considering the sheer authenticity of the dishes, it felt like a steal. Whether you're a Durham local or just passing through, La Spaghettata is a mustvisit for anyone craving authentic Italian cuisine, impeccable service, and a warm, laid-back atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can lose

yourself in the flavours of Italywithout having to worry about the price tag. Highly recommend! You can park in the Prince Bishops car park, walk up the stairs and follow the cobbled streets to

find this fantastic restaurant just to the left of bookshop.

A True Northern Power House

A lady that inspires, educate and provides endless support for women in the

North East.

Claire Preston a name that has become synonymous with empowerment, diversity, and inclusion, but her journey to becoming a force for change in business and charity has been anything but predictable. As head of operations at Power of Women,

chair of the Halo Project, and a coach, consultant, and voluntary director, Claire has dedicated her life to helping others recognise their potential and seize opportunities. But perhaps most surprising to her is the path that led her to this point.

Claire’s story is one that will inspire women to support other women not only in businesses but in life.

Claire grew up in Middlesbrough, describing herself as “an average, shy, awkward, unambitious teenager, with low self-esteem and no sense of my strengths or life’s opportunities.” At 17,

eager to experience life beyond her hometown, she moved to London after responding to a job ad in a local newspaper. This first bold step marked the beginning of a recurring theme in Claire’s life—recognising and embracing opportunities.

Her career path has been anything but linear. Claire has worked as cabin crew, a restaurant manager, teacher, trainer, and national charity lead, living in cities like London, Barcelona, and Tokyo. Now settled in North Yorkshire with her teenage daughter and their dog, Yogi, Claire spends her nonworking hours traveling to support her daughter’s sports activities and exploring when time permits.

Through each role, Claire has gained invaluable insights into various industries, organisations, and people, honing her ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life. It wasn’t until she returned to her studies later in life, while juggling work and single motherhood, that she discovered her true passion: helping others reach their potential.

Claire's transition into education began when she joined a start-up, combining her leadership experience in the hospitality industry with her passion for social mobility. Her vision and drive led to her promotion to CEO, and under her leadership, the business scaled to international success. This was just the beginning.

After her time in the start-up world, Claire took on a new challenge as commercial director at North Yorkshire County Council, where she gained a deeper understanding of public sector operations. Yet, her true calling remained in fostering personal and organisational growth. This led her back to coaching, mentoring, and charitable work with renewed purpose.

As chair of the Halo Project, Claire is committed to supporting women and families from BME communities affected by honour-based violence. She is particularly passionate about expanding Halo’s preventive work, especially in educational settings. One of her key initiatives is the roll-out of 'Halo Hubs'—student-led programs aimed at promoting equality and safety in universities across the UK, with plans to expand internationally.

Perhaps her most impactful role to date is with Power of Women (POW), a community interest company focused on improving equality and opportunities for women and girls in the North East. As head of operations, Claire has been instrumental in delivering educational programmes that challenge gender stereotypes and inspire young people. One of her key projects is a collaboration with Stockton Borough Council, where Claire and her team offer training, mentoring, and coaching to women and girls, helping them build confidence and independence.

Claire has also ventured into coaching and consultancy, working with businesses and individuals on a local, national, and international scale. Her work focuses on supporting personal and team growth, driving inclusion

and diversity, and fostering excellence in performance.

In 2018, Claire was named the inaugural Tees Businesswoman of the Year, a recognition of her leadership and contributions to the business and wider community. Since then, she has continued to use her platform to advocate for equality, diversity, and inclusion, mentoring and inspiring the next generation of female leaders.

Beyond her professional achievements, Claire serves as a voluntary director on the board of the North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership and was a founding member of the Open North Foundation, created to support businesses impacted by COVID-19.

Despite the challenges she has faced, including navigating single parenthood and overcoming personal obstacles, Claire’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, self-discovery, and the profound impact one person can have on others. Her main goal remains clear: to empower people to help themselves, fostering confidence and growth by recognising their strengths and working on their weaknesses.

In a time when inclusive leadership is more important than ever, Claire Preston stands as a shining example of leading with purpose and compassion. Her work continues to uplift, inspire, and empower others, one woman at a time.

Claire is keen to raise awareness around fund-raising for Power of Women and also keen to help other women thrive.

If you would like to learn more about Claire, you can follow her on LinkedIn and get updates on the Power Of Women website; https://powerofwomen.org.uk/

Prenups for powerful women: it’s not all about the dress!

Picture this: The engagement ring sparkles on your finger, and you’ve just said “yes!”

One of the easiest answers of your life. The future feels full of excitement and possibility. But now comes the tricky part: bringing up a prenuptial agreement.

No one really wants to discuss the possibility of a breakup while planning a wedding. It seems like a romance killer, right? Wrong.

The key word here is “future,” and future planning is crucial for any couple. For powerful women, the concept of a prenuptial agreement should be as natural as planning for your career, your finances, or your legacy.

After all, why is there a stigma around women initiating the prenup conversation?

We already plan for everything else— our inheritances, financial security, and life insurance. Why should planning for the worst-case scenario in marriage be any different?

What Exactly Is a Prenup?

In simple terms, a prenuptial agreement (prenup) is a legal contract made between two people before they marry, outlining how their assets will be divided if the

automatically binding under English law, they hold weight if both parties enter into them voluntarily, without coercion, and with full financial disclosure. In the landmark case Radmacher v Granatino in 2010, the UK Supreme Court ruled that prenups should generally be upheld unless it’s deemed unfair under the circumstances.

Benefits of a Prenup For careerdriven women;

Financial clarity from the start: A prenup allows both parties to set clear financial expectations before entering the marriage, avoiding potential misunderstandings later.

Negotiating while in a positive state of mind: Discussing finances at the start of a relationship, when emotions are positive, can lead to more thoughtful, rational agreements than during a contentious divorce.

Saving time and money in the long run: If the marriage ends, a prenup offers clarity, reducing costly and time-consuming legal battles.

Estate planning made easier: A prenup can help streamline estate planning, especially if either partner has significant assets or family wealth to consider.

Why Women in Business Should Consider a Prenup?

wide range of assets, including property, intellectual property, equipment, and even stock. A prenup ensures these assets remain yours if the marriage ends.

Future Earnings: Even if you’re just beginning your career, a prenup can address potential future earnings, bonuses, and other compensation you might receive. Family wealth or inheritance can also be protected through careful planning.

Business Interests: Future business ventures should be considered, even if you don’t currently have any in motion. A prenup can separate these interests from marital assets, ensuring they stay intact.

Debt Protection: A prenup can help you avoid being tied to your partner’s business debts, which is crucial if they are an entrepreneur or business owner themselves. It can also protect your own borrowing capacity and future investments.

As powerful, forward-thinking women, we owe it to ourselves to approach this conversation as we would any other aspect of our financial lives with confidence and foresight. A prenup isn’t about planning for failure; it’s about preparing for the unknown. Plan for the worst, aim for the best, and make sure you’re protected no matter what life throws your way.

How having a Female Mentor Can Transform Your Career

Georgia Boddy ACSI is Head of Business Operations at Cascade Cash Management and has been with the company since 2019. Cascade was Georgia’s first role in financial services, having previously had roles in customer service in the travel and medical industry.

Georgia told us: “Joining Cascade was a decision I knew was right at that time in my life, I had previously completed sixth form and an apprenticeship, and I was ready to begin my career”

“One of the main appeals of the role was having the supp ort of a female CEO in Dr Emma Black, she believed in me from the start and has encouraged my progression from day one. It is so important as

a woman to have a female mentor who is in your corner, and I have been lucky enough to have that in Emma”

In September 2021, Georgia was appointed the role of Head of Business Operations.

“The promotion really meant everything to me, I didn’t have any previous experience in the space

and so I spent my first few years at the company really building my knowledge, nurturing relationships and working out where I fit best in the company. Following this, I had an amazing chat with Emma, we discussed the next chapter for me, and it was obvious to both of us that management was a natural next step.

“If I could give one piece of advice on how other woman can access a career in financial services, it would be to say yes to every opportunity that comes your way and do not be intimidated by the industry. Knowledge can be built; qualifications can be gained, and lessons can be learnt – what is important is your enthusiasm and drive. If you want to do something, go for it and don’t let anything stop you!

Georgia has since achieved her Investment Operations Certificate with the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments and has joined the CISI North East Regional Committee as Board Member.

“Education means a lot to me, as someone from a low-income, singleparent family growing up, going to university wasn’t a feasible option. I’ve been very fortunate to have had my studies funded by my employer, which has been invaluable for my personal and professional development. Studying alongside full-time work is challenging, but equally rewarding.”

Cascade offer an annual placement year for students at local universities, and apprenticeships for those interested in beginning a career in the sector. These opportunities are always available to see on our LinkedIn page!

How motherhood can have a positive impact on your career

Dr Emma Black is CEO and Co-Founder of Cascade Cash Management, an online savings solution set up to make savings simple for everyone. Emma speaks to us today about how motherhood has positively impacted her professional journey to today.

Emma says: “When we set Cascade up, we had seen a gap in the market. We wanted to bring savers together with financial providers and financial professionals to ultimately achieve better outcomes for their hard-earned cash. It’s been a fantastic journey to today and I’m blessed to be able to spend my day-today aimed at delivering this mission.

“We started our journey in 2012, and in 2019 I had my first daughter, Neve. I don’t think I quite knew just how much becoming a Mother would change my life. I’d been an Aunt for many years before that and didn’t think it would be too different becoming a Mother. When I gave birth to Neve, I felt like

I immediately re-evaluated my whole life. What was I doing? Where was I heading? Did the success of the journey really matter to me?

“Having Neve brought boundaries into my life for the first time. Where I’d spent years working long hours, regularly starting at 06:30 and finishing late, I immediately didn’t want to do that anymore. I wanted to be there for this baby girl who mattered more to me than life itself. I knew however that I didn’t want to give up work as I’ve always felt a fulfilment from the journey because I love what I do so much.

“The introduction of motherhood forced me to focus. I evaluated what was absolutely essential for us in the business. What was our core offering, and who were our focussed customer avatars. In doing so, we became so much more productive as a team. Because we had absolute clarity on what we were doing, where we were going and what we needed to do to get there, our results started improving exponentially.

“I recently gave birth to my second daughter, Ella. Having her five years on from Neve’s arrival has made me reflect on how much motherhood helped me and us as a team by focussing our efforts and hard work. Looking forward to the next five years is exciting. With a profitable foundation for us to build on, we’re looking at supporting more focussed sectors with getting their cash working harder. While data suggests that motherhood harms a woman’s career, I’ve found the reverse occurred for me. Being a CEO and a mother is hard, but it is so rewarding and as entrepreneurs, we have the opportunity to make that easier for others. Let’s take that and build a better tomorrow for greater balance in life, for us and for our teams.”

StaceyPhoenix: From FirstGeneration Solicitor to Law Firm Director

Stacey Phoenix, Director at Cygnet Law, has built an inspiring career in the legal profession. Her journey from trainee solicitor to director is one marked by resilience, determination, and leadership. Stacey began her legal career in 2010 after qualifying as a solicitor in a small family practice in Guisborough.

Following four years heading a family department in Middlesbrough, she joined Cygnet Law in 2014. In 2020, Stacey became a director at the firm—a milestone year both for her and the world, as the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically shifted the legal landscape. Despite these challenges, Stacey embraced her new role, focusing on adapting to the industry's changing needs and successfully leading her team.

Stacey credits her success to her proactive approach. “Determination and hard work are essential,” she says. “You can’t take for granted that work will keep coming in. You

have to think about the next step and where the next case will come from.” This mindset has guided her career, from her early days as a trainee to her role as a director, where she now focuses on larger contracts and business growth. Stacey’s rise hasn’t been without personal challenges. Diagnosed with Stage IV Endometriosis, she underwent 11 surgeries over 12 years, all while continuing to work and raise her family. “Living with a chronic illness like Endometriosis is isolating and frustrating,” she shares. “But it’s also made me resilient. Some days, getting through work was a victory in itself.” Balancing family life and a demanding

career has been another challenge. As a mother and director, Stacey is a firm believer that both roles enhance one another. “Being a mum makes me a better lawyer, and being a lawyer makes me a better mam,” she says. At Cygnet, Stacey fosters a supportive culture that encourages employees to prioritise family alongside their professional commitments.

We asked Stacey if Cygnet Law offers support to individuals looking to start a career in the Law, Stacey offers simple but powerful advice: “It’s never too early, and it’s never too late.” Whether straight from education or pursuing law later in life, she emphasises the importance of gaining experience, building resilience, and being proactive in seeking opportunities. Through determination and leadership, Stacey Phoenix has not only shaped her own career but has also been instrumental in creating a supportive and thriving culture at Cygnet Law.

A Townhouse with a Promising Future

Returning to Durham after a decade-long absence, I recently stayed at the OYO Duresme Court, formerly known as Gads Townhouse.

My last visit, some 10 years ago, was marked by fond memories of the quaint steak restaurant beneath the charming townhouse. While that beloved steakhouse has since closed its doors, I was pleased to learn that the new owners are planning to introduce a restaurant in the near future—exciting news for future guests!

The transformation of this space has been subtle yet significant. The hotel remains centrally located, offering an ideal base for business travellers like myself who need to commute easily around the city.

The town’s historic charm still permeates the building, making it not only practical but also a picturesque place to unwind after a day of meetings. My room was

highly decorative, offering a blend of modern comfort with a nod to its past elegance. Each corner felt thoughtfully designed, creating a space where both work and relaxation

are equally enjoyable. Although there is no onsite restaurant at present, the amenities and attention to detail more than make up for this, with helpful and attentive staff ensuring my stay was as seamless as possible. What stands out most about OYO Duresme Court is its character. While some hotels can feel somewhat sterile, this townhouse has retained its individuality, and for travellers seeking a stay with a little more charm and personality, it is a perfect choice. It is perfectly located near the famous ZEN restaurant, only a stone throw away.

Rooms start at £200, and for its location and level of service, it’s a solid investment for those seeking more than just a standard business hotel. If you’re looking for central convenience with a touch of charm, OYO Duresme Court is a great place to start—especially with its promising future developments. I look forward to returning on my next trip, hopefully dining in their new restaurant!

The writer will see you now

NHS staff writing inspires commuters at the Metro’s most poetic station.

Longbenton Metro station is hosting a poetry exhibition on its metro platform with poster boards featuring poetry from NHS occupational therapist and poet Odeth Richardson.

The new works are a result of the first Newcastle Hospitals Charity writer-in-residence programme for Newcastle Hospitals staff, hosted in partnership with writing development agency for the North of England, New Writing North.

Creative results from the project can be seen on poster sites in four Metro stations: Hebburn, Wallsend, West Jesmond as well as Longbenton.

Writer in residence, Laura Lindow, hosted writing workshops and drop-in sessions, in-person and online, which provided staff with creative writing skills and editorial support across Newcastle Hospitals last year.

There were also courses on writing poetry, short stories and fantasy and one-to-one writing surgeries with NHS staff. An award-winning writer and North East resident, Laura collated and edited the resulting staff writings in an anthology, After the Applause, which was published in April this year.

Laura Lindow said: “The creative writing programme offered new opportunities for Newcastle Hospitals staff to express themselves, and to strengthen bonds with other colleagues across the trust. After the Applause paints a portrait of the here and now, through thoughts, hopes, fears, and collective imaginings for possible futures. It also profiles the writing talent and strength of creative voice that we’ve been witness to within Newcastle Hospitals staff teams.”

Staff from Newcastle Hospitals have written about the joy and

frustration of their professional lives; their personal experience of illness and being a carer; and the value of the NHS.  We hear from a consultant in Infectious diseases who treated some of the first UK Covid cases, a clinical perfusionist and a public health consultant who experienced becoming a caregiver when her son developed a chronic illness, and complex medical needs.

to the team for providing us with this outlet.”

Katie Newell, Arts Programme Manager of Newcastle Hospitals Charity, said: “The opportunity for staff to express their thoughts and feelings with colleagues and for a wider audience has had a positive impact on their wellbeing and sense of agency, and the residency has been such a success that we are continuing to work with Laura, to support creative writing opportunities in response to demand from staff.”

The evidence is overwhelming around the positive impacts of creativity, from singing to creative writing, on staff and patients.  It can help alleviate pain, depression, and improve quality of life and self-esteem...

She added: “The evidence is overwhelming around the positive impacts of creativity, from singing to creative writing, on staff and patients.  It can help alleviate pain, depression, and improve quality of life and selfesteem. These interventions can contribute to saving the NHS millions. For example, this research shows there is a £6.62 social return on investment for every £1 invested in visual arts interventions for dementia.”

Odeth Richardson said: “The writerin-residence programme was a god send for me as it helped me to develop my creative side but also provided a medium I could use to de-stress and support my wellbeing. It came at the right time. I have continued writing since the programme and it helps me to put things down that would normally occupy me and I can forget about it by channelling it into something positive. I am so pleased I could participate in this as it's helped me to cope with challenges in other areas of my life. A huge thank you

Research by the National Centre for Creative Health shows that creativity is proven to have a positive impact on health on major diseases and conditions including dementia, cancer, blood pressure, heart disease, schizophrenia, depression, and other mental ill health conditions. For example, studies show a 40% reduction in GP appointments from patients using social prescribing services which focus on cardiovascular risks and mental health.

Its findings show how dance can reduce the risk of developing dementia, Type 2 diabetes, and coronary heart disease. Drama and singing are shown to have positive effects on neural pathways following a stroke, and music therapy F

improves verbal fluency in dementia patients.

Longbenton Metro station has built an unlikely reputation as an alternative venue to showcase poetry, it displays poetry to over a million customers who use the station each year.

Sarah McCourt, Head of Marketing, Communications and Information at Nexus, said: “Longbenton Metro station has become the home of poetry. People don’t expect to see art and poetry in public places like train stations, but Metro already has a long history of displaying art on the network, and the writing on display expands on that. We’re really proud to support this very special exhibition of Newcastle Hospitals staff writing. We hope the work will surprise and inspire our customers.”

Three bespoke poems by Odeth are on display: The Rhythms of Home, Like a Phoenix, and These Little Things.

Like a Phoenix is a rallying cry to hope. It reads: “When cultures are rotten and behaviour is vile/ When change seems hopeless and people can’t smile/ When expectations mount and support is gone/ Like a Phoenix, I rise.”

Anna Disley, Executive Director at New Writing North, said: “Those working on the frontline of the NHS go through intense life and death emotions on a daily basis. They face enormous challenges, which demand very human qualities of empathy, resilience and courage, which shine in the work they have written. Travel and commuting offers valuable space for us to read. We hope the work captures daily commuters and lift them out of their routine, showing the power words can have to transport, empower, and inspire.”

Nestled in the heart of the city, this Argentinian-inspired gem delivers an unforgettable dining experience that’s sure to impress even the most discerning of food lovers. From the moment we walked

through the door, we knew we were in for something special. The atmosphere is simply fantastic. With sleek, contemporary décor, dim lighting, and a vibrant yet sophisticated ambiance, it strikes the perfect balance between chic and comfortable. Whether you’re dining for a special occasion or a casual night out, Gaucho sets the stage for an elevated evening. Now, let’s talk about the real star of the show—the steak. Hands down, this was the best steak we’ve had in a long time. Gaucho truly lives up to its reputation, serving cuts of beef that are flawlessly tender, juicy, and packed with flavour.

Every bite was a celebration of highquality Argentinian beef, cooked to perfection, complements to the chef. It’s safe to say this is the best steak restaurant in Newcastle, if not beyond. To complement our meal, we enjoyed a glass of Gaucho’s very own red wine. Smooth, rich, and delightfully balanced, it paired perfectly with our steaks, enhancing

every bite with its bold and refined flavours. It’s clear that Gaucho’s attention to detail extends beyond just their food. Speaking of attention to detail, the service was nothing short of impeccable. Paige, the manager, and Timmy, our server, went above and beyond to make our evening exceptional. They explained every dish to us with genuine enthusiasm, right down to the thoughtful selection of bread and butter—a surprisingly delightful highlight.

Sally Marshall

Growing up, Sally Marshall, owner of The Ship on the outskirts of Stockton on Tees wanted to be a trapeze artist in a circus, not your usual career but she had a love of acrobatics!

Instead, after leaving school she attended Kent University to study sports science and dance. She then went on to do a post graduate certificate of education (PGCE) at John Moore’s University in Liverpool.

“My first job as a sales assistant and Marks & Spencer,” Sally told us. “This gave me a great insight into the world of work and started my skill development. I also played the piano from an early age, as well as the violin, so I did at one stage

consider going into music, performing in an orchestra whilst I was still in my teens, but the sport side of me won, I really was a sports nut,” she laughed.

“Athletics was a brilliant outlet for me and my schoolteachers were very encouraging. I used to arrive at school every morning at 7.30am and do some sport activity, then stay after school on most days, taking part in sport competitions.

“When I moved to the Northeast, my first job only paid a modest salary. I knew that I was creative and driven to build a better life for myself. Nobody in my immediate family has their own businesses, so I learnt by starting small and building up slowly. At the time, I remember putting every bit of spare cash I had into property developing,” she continued. “This meant I had to live very frugally as I spotted a brilliant opportunity to purchase a rundown derelict small cottage on a large plot of land.” This was Sally’s first big adventure.

“The project meant I had to live in a caravan for over a year. My son was just two weeks old when we had to move out of our home to start our whole

‘self-build’ journey. The caravan was dreadful, we had no electricity for a while, it was a real challenge, especially with a newborn. The first winter was freezing but a friend of mine kindly allowed my family to stay in her house for a few weeks whilst we thawed out,” she laughed. “The whole experience taught me a massive amount though and I was still only 25 years old.

This was the start of my property career, but one career was never enough for me, I always wanted to have several things on the go at the same time. Each career just meant learning new and varied skills, which have always been of benefit at some point in the future and you never know when.”

Sally has now reached a point in her life where she is starting to ‘take her foot off the pedal’ and look around at how beautiful things around her are. “I get up early and go for a long walk or run with my dog,” she told us. “I think about everything that I am grateful F

for and then plan the day in small chunk size activities.

“I always take the time to play my flute in the morning and normally work on technique exercises then work on difficult sections in the pieces I’m studying. This is my self-discipline! I have no interest in becoming a professional flautist, I just want to be the best I can be.

“I often have business meetings around Teesside and frequently attend networking events. My weekly timetable starts to pan out about a month in advance, but I do work hard not to be busy! I do frequently check in with Toby my son during the day though to check everything is running smoothly in the business.”

The business is that of The Ship, a 200-seat restaurant with event and function space. Open six days a week from 12 noon to 11pm, Sally has pretty much handed over the day

to day running to Toby. “At one point I had three businesses, a restaurant on Yarm High Street and another on the outskirts of Middlesborough with 104 staff, as well as The Ship but as it grew organically, I decided it was all too much, I wanted to do different things, so sold those businesses, just keeping The Ship for Toby to run with a staff of 34. It was the same with the property business, I sold the original cottage I renovated then used the cash for deposits on three other houses, building a portfolio. This too has been scaled back.”

So, what are Sally’s plans going forward?

Now the businesses are scaled back to be more manageable, I intend keeping them at that level. I love spending time with my family, so I intend to do more of this and travel more. I have learned to stop trying so hard, you’ll get there eventually and enjoy the journey more. Everything will be OK.

Menopause myths debunked: What you really need to know

When it comes to menopause, there’s no shortage of myths and misinformation. As a wellness expert and founder of Simone Thomas Wellness, I’m passionate about empowering women to embrace this life stage with confidence and knowledge. Menopause isn’t something to dread, but instead, a natural transition that can be managed with the right mindset and support.

Let’s dive into some common myths about menopause and uncover the truth behind them, along with practical tips to make this phase of life smoother.

Myth 1: menopause only Happens when you’re older

Many women believe menopause is something that only happens when you're well into your 50s or 60s. The truth? Menopause can start earlier than you think. Perimenopause, which marks the transition into menopause, can begin as early as your 30s or 40s. During this phase, your body starts experiencing hormonal changes that

can lead to irregular periods, hot flashes, and mood swings. Understanding that menopause doesn’t have a set timeline can help you prepare for the changes.

Myth 2: menopause drains your energy completely

While fatigue is a common symptom, menopause doesn’t have to leave you feeling drained all the time. This is where proper nutrition and lifestyle adjustments come in. Foods rich in plant estrogens, such as apples, oats, corn, and soy, can help balance hormones naturally. Incorporating healthy fats like those found in mackerel, sardines, and

nuts can also boost energy levels and

Don’t underestimate the power of B vitamins and minerals like iron, magnesium, and calcium, either. These nutrients support red blood cell health, bone strength, and mental clarity, making you feel more energized and capable of facing your day with vitality.

Myth 3: hot flashes are inevitable and unbearable

Hot flashes may seem like the hallmark of menopause, but not every woman experiences them in the same way. While some may have severe episodes, others may have mild or no symptoms at all. If hot flashes are disrupting your life, there are ways to manage them naturally. Foods rich in vitamins C and E, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, help regulate body temperature. Omega fatty

acids, like those found in fish oil and flaxseeds, can also lessen the intensity of hot flashes.

Incorporating mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing and yoga, can help you stay calm and centred when hot flashes strike. Avoiding triggers like alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods can also reduce the frequency of these episodes.

Myth 4: menopause signals the end of your sexual life

This myth can be particularly damaging to a woman’s sense of self. While it’s true that vaginal dryness and changes in libido can occur during menopause, it doesn’t mean your sex life is over. There are many natural solutions to enhance intimacy during this time. Black cohosh and chasteberry are two herbs known to help with vaginal dryness and hormone balance, which can improve overall comfort and desire.

It’s also important to open the lines of communication with your partner. Menopause is a shared experience, and talking about it can lead to stronger emotional and physical intimacy.

Women’s health issues beyond menopause

It’s important to remember that menopause is just one chapter in a woman’s health journey. Many other health issues often go overlooked, yet they can significantly impact your quality of life. Issues like premenstrual syndrome (PMS), endometriosis, fertility challenges, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affect millions of women, but are not always discussed openly.

In my work at Simone Thomas Wellness, I offer natural approaches to these conditions, focusing on

holistic well-being. For example, women experiencing endometriosis or ovarian cysts can benefit from an anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega3s, fresh vegetables, and whole grains. Similarly, addressing fertility challenges or PCOS often requires a focus on hormone regulation through balanced nutrition and mindful living.

Myth 5: once menopause starts, there’s nothing you can do

Perhaps the biggest myth of all is that menopause is something you must “get through.” In reality, you have a lot of control over how you experience this phase. Making lifestyle changes—such as adjusting your diet, managing stress, and staying active—can greatly improve your quality of life.

At Simone Thomas Wellness, I always emphasize that menopause isn’t the end of anything. It’s a new beginning, a time to focus on yourself and prioritize your health and happiness. Supplements like co-enzyme Q10 for energy, boron for hormone stabilization, and selenium for easing hot flashes can be incredibly helpful. But even more important is

self-care—whether through exercise, hydration, mindfulness, or finding a supportive community of women going through the same thing.

Final thoughts

Menopause can be a challenging phase, but it doesn’t have to define you. By busting the myths around menopause and approaching it with knowledge, you can feel more empowered to take charge of your health. Through mindful nutrition, natural supplements, and lifestyle changes, this stage can be an opportunity to focus on your well-being and embrace the changes ahead.

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Reach out for support when you need it, whether through health professionals, friends, or wellness experts like me. You’ve got this!

Hello Autumn...

This season’s bounty is my favourite; the robust vegetables that will appear in warm and comforting stews as the darker nights draw in.

I also like to make the most of the season’s fruits too which include home-grown apples - a staple at this time of year, that come to me in abundance from around the neighbourhood. In return, I deliver

Spiced Apple sauce…

A great way to preserve a batch of apples which comes in so handy for both sweet and savoury dishes. I store it both in the fridge and freezer as it lasts a fair while; you can use it over the festive period too.

Ingredients :

• 2 kg apples peeled, cored, and chopped- Granny Smiths or home-grown

• Strips of lemon peel from 2 large lemons (use a vegetable peeler to strip 4 lengths, zest only, not the pith)

• 5 tbsp apple cider vinegar

• 1 ½ cup of white sugar (or brown sugar)

• 2 tbsp teaspoon ground cinnamon or 2 cinnamon sticks

• 1 cup of water

• Pinch of salt

Method

• Place all ingredients in a saucepan with the water and bring to the boil

• Simmer for 10 mins until apples are soft; remove lemon peel and cinnamon sticks then mash gently with a potato masher

my neighbours home cooked pies, jars of stewed apples and chutneys for everyone to enjoy. Whether you have home grown apples or not, you’ll find an abundance of beautiful cooking apples at the grocery stores and local supermarkets. So, it’s all things ‘appley’ for this month’s edition of my recipes

Enjoy! X

• Place to one side and allow to cool

• Place the sauce into sterilised mason jars and refrigerate.

The sauce will last up to 4 weeks in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.

Definitely one of our family favourites this season and so versatile. A fabulous dessert, made from scratch with only 5 ingredients. Spicy, sweet, deliciousness; when eaten hot out of the oven, it’s pure magic.

Ingredients :

• 1 jar Apple sauce (recipe above)

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• 100g mixed dried fruit / raisins (of your choice)

• 1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry

• Icing sugar to dust

Method :

• Heat oven to 180C fan forced

• Mix the ready prepared apple mixture with the dried fruit (you can use whatever dried fruits you prefer or non at all )

• Place the puff pastry flat opening it out as shown in the images

• Place a long channel of the apple mixture in the centre of the pastry, 2cm deep then score and cut the sides of the pastry into strips, approximately 1.5cm thick as shown.

• Pull the strips across the pastry, almost plaiting it as you go

• Brush with egg wash and place into the preheated oven

• Bake until golden brown on top and apple mix bubbling out of the slits

• Serve with cream or custard and enjoy

Caramelised Onion, blue cheese and Apple tart

A brilliant snack or brunch idea. Caramelised onion tart with blue cheese, dried fruit and apple. Blue cheese and fruit is a delicious combination, in salads, on a cheese board and baked on a bed of pastry. If you haven’t tried it, I suggest you do, you will love it!

Ingredients:

• 2 apples sliced finely

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 8 ounces goat cheese or blue cheese

• 1 cup mixed dried fruit

• 2 red onion, sliced

• Salt to taste

• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

• 1 sheet puff pastry

• Small bunch fresh thyme (optional)

Method:

• Place olive oil in a large sauce pan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stir fry for approx 10 mins until caramelised. Add dried fruit and apple and mix and stir through. Cook on a low heat for approximately 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Leave aside to cool

• Place cheese in a small bowl and break up. Add black pepper and stir through.

• Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

• Place puff pastry on the lined baking tray. Spread onions and fruit evenly over the tart, leaving a 1/2 inch border on all sides.

• Top the tart evenly with cheese and sprinkle with thyme. Bake until crust is golden, about 25-

30 minutes.

• Let the cooked tart cool for 15 minutes. Cut into approximately 2 by 3 inch rectangles. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Enjoy!

Happy Pumpkin Spice Season!

F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote that “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall”. I have always loved

autumn, with its coppery hues and contrasting blue skies, its moody fogs and silvery dewfall.

I’m not as big a fan of the shorter days and nights drawing in. As somebody who thrives in being outdoors, the darkening evenings often frustrate me as I struggle to fit all my tasks into fewer hours. Towards the end of August, I felt for the first time, a deep sense of sorrow that the growing season was coming to a definitive close. So, what to do to maintain a sense of purpose in my growing?

Scandi Style Gardening

This year, I’m taking a leaf out of Sweden’s allotment enthusiasts. In many parts of Sweden, they enjoy

Michaela Axford our regular gardening contributor shares tips with us on what we can plant and grow ourselves.

longer days during the summer, and then of course far shorter days in the winter. This has its advantages during the summer, but the cold of the autumn and winter make for a short growing season. In this environment, Swedish growers make good use of their poly tunnels all year round. Last year, I enjoyed emptying my poly tunnel once the tomatoes and cucumbers had died back, making it neat and spic and span for the spring. However, this year, I plan to keep it well-stocked throughout the winter. Wilfully ignoring the instructions on the back of the seed packets, I’ve deliberately started some varieties at the wrong time. A relentlessly wet spring killed off every attempt I made to grow peas and beans, so I started a new batch in midAugust. I have chosen fast-cropping varieties such as “Oregon Sugar Pod” meaning that if the weather turns cold quickly, I have the option of using the shoots as greens before they die off. However, if we are lucky enough to enjoy an Indian summer, then you never know, I may have a late crop of mangetout.

Cauliflowers have a notoriously long growing period, and another wet spring into summer might be

disastrous for a crop. To avoid this, I’ve started a handful of plants in the hydroponic kit for a strong and speedy germination, and then I’ve planted them directly into the soil in the poly tunnel. My hope is that the well-fertilised and relatively pest-free environment will allow the leaves to photosynthesise enough to provide them with strength to see them through the colder months. In Sweden, growers often dig up entire plants and pot them indoors to protect them from the cold. I have also dotted some carrots and Calendula around the larger plants to encourage pollination for any remaining insect that may be overwintering.

Meanwhile, I spent the last weeks of August devoted to fast-cropping summer favourites. Turnips are an

acquired taste, but Milan Purple Top has proved again and again to be a reliable variety and fast to mature. This turnip produces flatter, smaller roots that lift easily out of the soil when ready to eat. I’ve enjoyed them in casseroles and diced finely for pie fillings.

Harvest Hoarder

I now find myself with a glut of

Conference Pears! My pear tree has been extraordinarily fruitful thanks to a growth of green manure below its branches back in the spring. These pears are of course notorious for giving a very short window of ripeness before going mushy. This year I plan to can several pears so that I can enjoy them long after they would normally have turned to mush. I have also decided that any green tomatoes that remain in the autumn will not be wasted. My South African neighbour was bemoaning the unavailability of green tomatoes in the U.K. recently, and I shall be looking to use mine anyway I can.

Last year I was reliably informed that if I chose a second-early variety of potato, it would be possible to grow them within 100 days ready for Christmas lunch. Well, that did not work out. However, I chose to leave the seed potatoes in the grow-sacks, and I was rewarded with a lovely crop in the summer. I always find that there are some tiny and sneaky potatoes left behind in the soil, and I chose to leave them in place. This has given me with a second burst of growth. I’ve moved the sacks into the shelter of the poly tunnel to avoid late summer blight which is devastating to both tomatoes and potatoes. With a bit of luck, and regular feeding and watering, I will be enjoying tasty steamed, herby potatoes with my Christmas turkey.

Whilst we tend to be wedded to the idea that it is spring that herald’s new life, I am looking forward to finding out if with a bit of ingenuity, the colder months can also be equally as productive. Maybe F. Scott Fitzgerald was on to something!

Get ready to own your Autumn style with confidence and flair!

As the leaves change and the air grows crisp, it’s time to step into a new season of style. Autumn fashion offers an exciting mix of cozy layers, rich textures, and bold colours, allowing women to showcase their personal flair while embracing comfort. This season’s trends are all about balance—mixing timeless pieces with modern updates. To help you navigate your Autumn wardrobe, here are several top tips for personal styling that will keep you looking chic and confident all season long.

Master the art of layering

One of the most practical and stylish aspects of Autumn fashion is layering. The key is to create dimension without bulk, so choose lightweight base layers such as a fitted turtleneck or a simple silk blouse. From there, add statement outerwear like a tailored trench coat, a leather jacket, or an oversized cardigan.

Top Tip: Try mixing textures within your layers for a more dynamic look. Pair a cashmere sweater with a leather jacket or a denim shirt with a wool coat. The contrast in fabrics will elevate your outfit and add sophistication.

Invest in versatile knitwear

Knitwear is an Autumn essential, and this season, it’s all about making bold statements with your cozy pieces. Oversized sweaters, cableknit cardigans, and fitted knits in deep Autumnal hues are everywhere. These versatile pieces work for both casual and polished looks.

Top Tip: For a flattering silhouette, balance your oversized knits with slim bottoms like skinny jeans, leather leggings, or tailored trousers. Add a belt to cinch your waist and give structure to your outfit, preventing it from looking too bulky.

Play with Autumn’s rich colour palette

Autumn is embracing the season’s

classic earthy tones, think burnt orange, mustard yellow, and forest green while also welcoming pops of vibrant colour. Jewel tones like amethyst purple, sapphire blue, and ruby red are making a bold impact this year.

Top Tip: To create a cohesive look, choose one vibrant colour and balance it with neutral shades like beige, cream, or charcoal grey. If you’re feeling adventurous, try colour-blocking by pairing two jewel tones together, such as deep emerald and burgundy, for a rich and luxurious outfit.

Mix textures for a luxurious look

Textures are at the heart of Autumn fashion and mixing them can take your outfit to the next level. Pair soft, cozy fabrics like knits or wool with edgier materials such as leather, suede, or denim for an outfit that is both stylish and tactile.

Top Tip: Try pairing a velvet dress with a leather jacket or wear a wool coat over a satin blouse. The juxtaposition of hard and soft materials not only adds visual interest but also gives your look a sense of luxury and depth.

Update your outerwear game

A statement coat is a must-have for Autumn. This season, look for classic silhouettes like trench coats, oversized blazers, or belted wool coats in rich Autumnal hues. A good coat not only keeps you warm but also serves as the finishing touch to your look.

Top Tip: Opt for coats with bold details like large buttons, wide lapels, or unique textures like plaid

or houndstooth patterns. An eyecatching coat can instantly elevate a simple outfit and make you stand out in a crowd.

Don’t be afraid of tailored suits

Tailored suits are making a strong comeback this Autumn, offering a sleek and polished alternative to casual wear. Opt for suits in classic Autumn shades like rust, camel, and olive, or go bold with jewel tones.

Top Tip: If you want to soften the sharpness of a suit, pair it with a cozy knit underneath or swap the blazer for a longline cardigan. Finish the look with ankle boots or loafers for a chic yet approachable outfit.

Accessorize wisely

Autumn accessories can pull your look together and add an extra layer of style. Think wide-brimmed hats, oversized scarves, and statement belts to define your silhouette. For bags, structured totes, and leather crossbodies in warm tones are the go-to.

Top Tip: Use accessories to add a pop of colour or texture to your outfit. A bold scarf in a contrasting colour or a textured leather handbag can make a big impact. Opt for gold jewellery, which complements the warm, earthy tones of Autumn fashion beautifully.

Footwear focus: boots for every occasion

Boots are the footwear star of Autumn. From ankle boots to kneehighs, this season offers a variety of styles for every occasion. Chunkyheeled boots, combat boots, and sleek leather styles are all popular options this year.

Top Tip: Ankle boots are perfect for everyday wear and can be paired with jeans, skirts, or dresses. For a more statement look, opt for kneehigh or over-the-knee boots, which look particularly striking when paired with a midi skirt or dress.

Incorporate midi skirts for elegance

Midi skirts are the perfect transition piece for Autumn, combining elegance with practicality. Whether pleated, A-line, or pencil style, midi skirts pair beautifully with chunky knits or tailored blouses.

Top Tip: For a polished look, pair your midi skirt with heeled ankle boots and a fitted turtleneck. Layer a structured blazer or longline coat over the top to complete the ensemble.

Focus

on fit and comfort

Autumn fashion is about feeling good in what you wear. Ensure your clothes fit well and allow for movement, especially when layering. Comfort doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style, so find pieces that let you feel both cozy and confident.

Top Tip: When buying new Autumn staples, pay attention to the fit and fabric. Choose materials that are breathable but warm, like wool, cotton blends, or cashmere. If your outfit is comfortable, you’ll naturally carry yourself with more confidence and grace.

Conclusion: elevate your autumn wardrobe

This Autumn, fashion is all about embracing the season’s rich textures, bold colours, and effortless layering.

With these personal styling tips, you can create looks that are not only on-trend but also a true reflection of your unique style. From cozy knits to tailored suits, let your wardrobe speak volumes while keeping you warm and stylish all season long.

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month,

but do you know what you are looking for?

Sarah Kaye is here to explain more, director at Thrive Medical Clinic Sarah treats patience from around the world inc Dubai & America.

Sarah is an Independent prescribing nurse and has BSc honours degrees in both Pharmacology and Adult Nursing. She has studied Naturopathic Medicine and Functional Medicine. Sarah specialises in advanced aesthetics, longevity, and naturopathic nutritional medicine using a functional medical approach.

This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness month and here we highlight the role of oestrogen dominance in Cancer.

Oestrogen Dominance: What is it?

Oestrogen dominance is more common than you might think. And it’s not just women who are affected – it’s increasingly common amongst men too. And whilst oestrogen dominance is affecting

more and more people by the day, the effects are increasingly widespread too. Symptoms can range from mood swings and weight gain to anxiety, fertility issues and serious chronic disease such as cancer. To put it mildly, oestrogen dominance is bad news! Read on to find out who’s affected and what you can do about it.

Overweight & obesity - increased oestrogen

Oestrogen dominance occurs when there is an excess of oestrogen in relation to progesterone or testosterone. This imbalance is caused by a number of factors, and the causes can differ between men and women, but the level of exposure to oestrogens appears to be on the rise, and this is due to a number of factors, chief among them being increases in overweight and obesity and, it’s thought, the impact of environmental oestrogens. Men naturally produce smaller quantities of oestrogens than women. However, they are equally prone to overweight and obesity, and exposed to the same level of environmental oestrogens too. It is very

possible that everyone suffers a little from excess oestrogen, and for many men and women it can cause serious problems.

Living in a sea of oestrogen

Unfortunately, we live in an age where oestrogens are everywhere. Our bodies make them, we take them in the form of medications, and we eat, drink and breathe them into the body. Oestrogen-like compounds are found in food, air and water, plastic residues, pesticides, industrial waste products, exhaust fumes, soap products, carpeting, furniture and much more. A high-fat, high-dairy and low fibre diet also increases the amount of oestrogen in the body, and so does alcohol, excess insulin, being overweight or obese, the contraceptive pill and HRT. You would literally have to live in a bubble to escape the onslaught of everyday oestrogens.

When oestrogen becomes imbalanced

Imbalanced oestrogen can cause a whole host of knock on effects in the body, ranging from the mildly irritating to the debilitating. What’s even more worrying is that over time, increased exposure to oestrogen can significantly increase your risk of chronic disease. Signs of oestrogen dominance in women are fairly welldocumented, but the story is much less clear for men. As most men age, the level of oestrogen, oestrogen look-alikes and xenoestrogen toxins in their bodies rises. This assault is responsible for a variety of ailments.

How is your body handling oestrogen?

The way the body handles oestrogen has a significant impact on its ultimate biologic effects and can contribute significantly to increased

levels in the body. The good news is that healthy oestrogen metabolism relies on essential nutrients to support hydroxylation, methylation, glucuronidation and sulphation pathways to safely process and eliminate oestrogen from the body. So, whilst it’s not always possible to control exposure to oestrogen, you can support the way the body handles oestrogen through these important processes simply by optimising intake of the key nutrients required.

How can I find out if I am oestrogen dominant?

Thrive use a form of testing that maps out the entire steroidogenic pathway. This shows how you are manufacturing hormones from cholesterol, imbalances in the chain of production, the involvement of stress hormones (cortisol), metabolism of hormones as well as detoxification of hormone metabolites. This test confirms if oestrogen dominance is present and how it may be manifesting.

This test is great for confirming all hormone imbalances (e.g. oestrogen dominance, PMS, PMD, Peri-Menopause or Menopause) so useful for anyone keen to understand hormone balance.

After the tests are completed we form a bespoke treatment plan.
