Despite the weather saying different, it is spring and a time when most of us don’t have enough time to fit everything in that is offered to us. I do hope that because we are all busy, that means that our businesses in Yorkshire are flourishing.

I was quite inspired by the story of the mum of two from Ilkley who has partnered with Aardman Animations to create her Shaun the Sheep wool dryer balls. I love it when a small business partners with larger global businesses! You can read the full story on page 30.

Following the success of the first Yorkshire Businesswoman Awards in March, work has now begun on the 2025 awards with many of the sponsors returning for a second year. You can read about how you can get involved on page 36.

This edition, we have a new member spotlight section where we feature three of our lovely members. If you are a Yorkshire Businesswoman member and would like to feature, do drop me an email: editor@yorkshirebusinesswoman. co.uk and if you’re not a member, what are you waiting for? You can sign up on our website and start to get your business noticed.

May was very busy. We had our Yorkshire Businesswo’MAN’ event in conjunction

with Lexus Leeds at Goldsborough Hall, I visited Middlethorpe Hall Hotel in York, invited by Browns Department Store for their Estee Lauder afternoon tea, part of York Fashion week, stayed at the beautiful Dakota Hotel Leeds (see page 62) learned all about gut health and its importance at Dunesforde Vineyard (page 65) and enjoyed Sunday lunch at the newly refurbished Amber Restaurant within the Cedar Court Hotel, Harrogate (page 66).

In April Yorkshire Businesswoman took a table at the FB Fashion Ball, organised by member Lisa Darwin, Lisa is a fashion guru and will be on hand to help us at the Yorkshire Businesswoman Fashion Show and afternoon tea at Grantley Hall on 5 July. Tickets are now on sale, see the website for details.

Hope you are all enjoying a busy start to the summer and do get in touch and let us know how we can help your business.

Our next edition will be out in early June.

Vice Principal named Muslim Woman of the Year

A Bradford College Vice Principal has been named Muslim Woman of the Year at a prestigious national awards ceremony.

Alina Khan won the 'Noor Inayat Khan Muslim Woman of the Year' category at the British Muslim Awards 2024 which took place at the Muslim Heritage Centre in Manchester.

The British Muslim Awards is one of the most prestigious events in the British Muslim community, recognising and celebrating the achievements and contributions of British Muslims in various fields. Alina won the award against nine other finalists in a fiercely competitive category.

Alina said, “I was so surprised to hear I’d been shortlisted, but even more

so when I won! When I looked at the other finalists in the category, they were hugely successful influencers. I feel extremely humbled to receive such an amazing accolade given the award is to recognise those who inspire and fight for justice and feel especially honoured about the category.”

Alina’s award is named after Noor Inayat Khan, a wartime British secret agent of Indian descent who was the first female radio operator sent into Nazi-occupied France by the Special Operations Executive (SOE). She was arrested and eventually executed by the Gestapo. Noor was posthumously awarded the George Cross for her courage in 1949.

A trailblazer herself, Alina is the first person in the further education sector to ever hold the position of Vice

Principal for Equality, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI) & Student Experience. She joined Bradford College in 2022 and champions EDI to break down barriers, challenge injustice, and ensure everyone can reach their full potential. Alina also achieved a place on the Asian Standard ‘Bradford’s Most Influential’ list earlier this year.

Born and raised in Bradford, Alina studied three A Levels at Bradford College herself. She went on to study IT at Manchester Metropolitan University and came back to Bradford College to study for a post-graduation certificate in education. Alina started her career as a secondary ICT teacher before moving into the Bradford Local Authority where she worked within children’s services and later managed the Education Safeguarding team.

Alina continued, “As a woman from a minority background, I understand and have experienced many barriers. People like me often need to try even harder to gain credibility and respect in professional settings, so I believe it’s up to us to then remove those obstacles by developing cultural competency, embedding organisational change, and fostering environments of inclusivity and respect.

“I hope I can use this award to inspire others to challenge the status quo and positively disrupt the norm. I truly believe that you can’t be who you can’t see and know how important it is for students to have a range of positive role models who are able to have a positive influence. If just one young person looks at me and thinks “Well, if she can do it then so can I,” then I know I’m having an impact.”

Firms sign agreement to kickstart transformational South Village scheme

Caddick Group, the leading privately owned property and construction firm, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Homes England, the government’s housing and regeneration agency to work together to accelerate the delivery of South Village in Leeds.

Located just off Meadow Road, the £1bn South Village scheme, which can deliver up to 1,925 new homes, will be a focal point for the wider South Bank regeneration area - one of the largest brownfield projects in the UK. It received unanimous approval from Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel in March, where it was praised for the quality of its vision and design.

Caddick has been working with the local authority to help accelerate the delivery of homes in the city. This agreement with Homes England is a step towards the infrastructure works starting on site before the end of the year, allowing the first plots to emerge in 2025.

South Village is the new name for the

City One development area, a 10 acre site on Leeds’ South Bank. Forming part of the wider vision to regenerate this underutilised area of the city centre, the South Village masterplan, created by the award-winning SimpsonHaugh Architects, will create new pedestrian connections, extend emerging green corridors across the centre and set aside more than half of the site for landscaped spaces.

Focused on a contemporary village green the size of a professional sports field, the project will also offer up to 450 hotel beds and 70,000m2 of commercial space, specifically targeting businesses looking for highly sustainable new facilities.

The project will also feature a travel hub, maximising connectivity with West Yorkshire’s proposed mass transit system and its planned Leeds line.

Lee Savage, director at Caddick Developments said: “This agreement with Homes England will be instrumental in accelerating our work on this project, allowing us to begin delivering much-needed city centre housing at pace, while also introducing significant public realms for all to enjoy. The ambition is that South Village will effectively redefine contemporary urban living in Leeds, located in the heart of the city centre, but offering all the amenity of traditional village life.

“Thank you to Homes England, our city partners and the wider project team for their support to date in accelerating this transformational scheme.”

Peter Denton, chief executive officer at Homes England, said: "South Village has

YorkshireBusinessWoman 8

a significant role to play in the ongoing transformation of Leeds' South Bank. West Yorkshire and Leeds have a clear vision for the city’s future, and we're pleased to be working with Caddick and other local partners to bring that one step closer to reality."

The project will feature a travel hub with a view to maximising connectivity with West Yorkshire’s proposed mass transit system and its planned Leeds line.

Councillor James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council, said “Developments like South Village are a great example of the wider South Bank’s potential, and illustrate why we have worked so hard to encourage regeneration activity there.

“South Village’s mix of homes, hotel accommodation, commercial opportunities and green space will complement the many other transformative projects that have already helped make the South Bank an exciting place to live, work, visit and spend time. “It’s particularly pleasing that this scheme has scope for providing nearly 2,000 new homes and will therefore align with our own efforts to deliver good-quality housing on repurposed brownfield land in communities across the city.”

Kerrie Buckley, associate partner at SimpsonHaugh Architects said: “We are thrilled to hear Caddick Group have secured an agreement with Homes England to help bring forward development at South Village in Leeds. Placemaking is at the heart of our vision for this residential-led mixed use masterplan and we are excited to see the emergence of a distinctive new neighbourhood at the southern gateway into Leeds city centre.” “There has already been strong interest in the site, therefore I would advise any interested parties to get in contact to discuss the opportunity and arrange a viewing.”

Barnsley’s international style icon is back

International style guru Rita Britton has revived her iconic fashion brand Pollyanna – and started designing and making clothes in Barnsley again.

Rita, who opened her first fashion emporium in the town centre in 1967, has come out of semi-retirement to relaunch Pollyanna Barnsley Ltd with business partner and daughterin-law Michelle Underwood.

This time around, the pair will focus entirely on the design and manufacture of their own collection, selling direct to Rita’s long list

of loyal customers - and a new generation of couture buyers.

Rita and Michelle have moved into a new workshop at The Business Village Barnsley and are recruiting to a small team of pattern cutters and machinists headed up by experienced seamstress Hazel Snow who has worked with Rita for eight years.

Rita said: “I can’t do retirement. I’ve had to pull back in the past for health reasons but always want to get back to work. I still have a passion for beautifully made clothes and I want to be part of the future not the past.”

Rita’s original Pollyanna store stocked avant garde labels such as Comme des Garcons, Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake before it closed in 2014 after 50 years’ trading. She launched her own design collection in the 1990s to create a range of enduring staples which complemented the big-name designers.

YorkshireBusinessWoman 10

Previously marketed under the label Nomad, Rita and Michelle have now re-launched her collection under Rita’s signature Pollyanna brand.

Rita said: “We decided to adopt the name Pollyanna for the label now as it is so well-recognised, and I’m very fond of it. I did wonder if younger people may find it old-fashioned, but they seem to love it.”

Pollyanna offers an exclusive range of designs through online, telephone and in-person sales. Most garments are

custom-made to order, and pieces may be adjusted to fit an individual’s body shape if required.

Rita said: “We’re almost working to a tailor business model. Making to order cuts out waste almost entirely and ensures each person receives a garment that is perfect for them and will make them feel fabulous every time they put it on. People must wait for a garment from us, but our customers are okay with that.”

This business ethos resonates with Rita’s twin commitments to enduring style and sustainability. She has always stood against fast, unethical, and carbon-guzzling fashion.

Rita said: “I’ve taken people to task on this issue for years. I know we must walk a tightrope, because young women want to follow trends and have new looks and we need to work out how to serve that desire too.

“But it has never been right to pay a 12-year-old in a faraway country a pittance to make poor quality clothes then ship them here to wear for a little while then throw.

“We need to change attitudes, buy less, and buy better. It will mean a big change for many, but I believe we’ll get used to paying the proper price for clothing again; and sustainable, ethical options can be designed and made at every level.

“We’re a high-end producer of course; that’s what we do. If you buy from Pollyanna, you’re buying a beautiful garment made in the UK with exceptional quality fabric which you’ll be wearing it in five, ten, 20 years’ time.”

Through her new venture, Rita is focused on supporting the revival of clothing manufacture in this region,

joining companies like Lucy and Yak and Glass Onion Vintage who have got sewing machines whirring again in Barnsley workshops.

Rita is working with Barnsley College to support the idea of new pattern cutting courses and sewing apprenticeships; and explore the possibility of a showcase for young designers in Barnsley town centre.

Rita said: “We threw away a generation of skilled machinists in Barnsley when companies like SR Gent lost out to low-cost overseas production and closed in the early 2000s. We’ve got to act quickly if we want to reach out to those former factory workers and encourage them to come back and pass on their expertise before it’s lost entirely.

“I want to be part of the revival of our ability to design and make clothes here in Barnsley.”

Michelle, an experienced stylist, and vintage fashion enthusiast, is also focused on extending Pollyanna’s customer base by embracing the latest digital technology to step up how products are viewed, visualised on the person and ordered online.

Business development manager at The Business Village Kevin Steel said: “We are delighted to welcome Rita and Michelle to The Business Village. Pollyanna is a global heritage brand synonymous with Barnsley and has a great future ahead of it.

“Rita brought Mary Quant miniskirts to Barnsley in the 1960s and Japanese designers to the UK in the 1980s, so it’s no surprise she’s at the forefront of the today’s campaign to revive clothing manufacturing in the UK and champion a more sustainable approach in the fashion industry.”

Law firm celebrates latest graduates of pioneering legal apprenticeship scheme

Law firm Gordons is celebrating the latest graduates of its pioneering multi-award-winning law apprenticeship scheme.

Tegan Knappy and Kendall Philipson, who joined Gordons as apprentices in September 2018, have both now qualified as chartered legal executives.

Tegan and Kendall have completed the Gordons Law Apprenticeship, which was the first of its kind in the UK legal sector when it was launched in 2011 to enable greater social mobility within the profession.

The five-year long programme admits bright and determined 18-year-old A-level school leaver entrants each September. Since it began, 36 young people have been apprentices at the firm and have gone on to pursue careers in the law.

The apprenticeship scheme was the

brainchild of senior partner, Paul Ayre, who said: “We are proud to be known as the law firm that launched the first apprenticeship of its kind in the UK legal sector.

“However, we are even more proud to have identified 36 bright and ambitious young people and provided them with the opportunity to gain access to a career in the profession.

“Tegan and Kendall are young lawyers with tremendous potential and now enter the next stage of their careers. As a firm that celebrates meritocracy and supports people with the right attitude and ability to succeed, we will continue to develop them.”

Following their graduation, Tegan is specialising in employment law

whilst Kendall is working within the firm’s commercial property team.

Commenting on her apprenticeship, Tegan said: “Though it is challenging, Gordons’ apprenticeship scheme is accessible to any candidate with the right attitude and drive to succeed.

“The scheme allows individuals the opportunity to gain invaluable practical experience whilst also gaining a qualification free from any university debts, so it’s a win-win.”

As apprentices, both trained to become qualified lawyers through a combination of hands-on experience and academic study whilst Gordons paid their salary and course fees.

Kendall added: “I didn’t want to go to university, so the apprenticeship scheme was the right route for me. Everyone at Gordons has been very supportive throughout my apprenticeship, with colleagues helping me through revision and course work as well as mentoring me at work.”

The firm was the first to be featured in the UK’s top 30 higher apprenticeship employers and in the top 100 employers for school and college leavers, which is recognised by AllAboutSchoolLeavers. co.uk.

The firm’s legal apprenticeship has also been highly commended for excellence in diversity and inclusion by the Law Society, won the Raising the Bar Awards for education and won the most effective diversity programme award at The Lawyer Management Awards.

Winners of BBC talent search in Bradford for UK City of Culture year

The BBC has handpicked three winners to be the ‘voices of Bradford’ for the UK City of Culture in 2025.

Irene Kaali, 30, Humaira Bham, 25, and Olivia Wright, 25, will be at the heart of the BBC’s coverage of the UK City of Culture, which is being spearheaded by BBC Radio Leeds.

On 30th April, the BBC's New Voices Bradford winners were exclusively

announced on The One Show on BBC One by head judge Anita Rani.

The trio from West Yorkshire were selected after a four-week talent search by BBC Radio Leeds which generated hundreds of entries.

BBC Radio Leeds asked member of the public to record a 45-sceond video of themselves, describing what the city means to them. The BBC team helped people to enter by doing a week of community outreach in Bradford, engaging with local people in their own city.

The talent search was also supported by a number of Bradford-born

YorkshireBusinessWoman 16

celebrities, including Anita Rani, Kimberley Walsh and Jonny Bairstow.

An expert panel of TV presenter Anita Rani, BBC Radio Leeds Breakfast Presenter Rima Ahmed, BBC Radio Leeds Executive Editor Simon Monk, and Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture’s Creative Director Shanaz Gulzar judged the 14 finalists at Sunbridgewells in the city centre on Sunday 28th April.

Each finalist was given two minutes to impress the judges who scored them on their ability to communicate their vision, creativity and innovation of audition, passion for the district of Bradford, and understanding of the UK City of Culture 2025.

Olivia did an impassioned and funny audition, Humaira read out an emotional poem about her heritage and family, and Irene belted out an original song she penned herself.

The panel praised the winners for their heart, authenticity, warmth, and passion for their home city.

Irene Kaali, who is a Zumba instructor from Bradford, says: “My background is in theatre, so I’ve done a million auditions in my life and sometimes you go into an audition scenario and you know you’ve got the look or have the talent but with this there was no way to tell.

“Ultimately, I’ve always just wanted to spend my life doing something that I can be proud of that goes beyond me, so this is everything I could have dreamed of. I’m just going to try and live in the moment, enjoy it, and be proud of it.

“The reaction {when the winners were announced} from everyone was so symbolic of Bradford. There was never any competition in that

room, everyone was for each other, supporting each other so we won together as a team.”

Humaira Bham, who is an Optometrist from Batley, says: “I feel over the moon. My mum came up to me, she was moved to tears. If I can make my mum that proud it makes me so happy.”

Olivia Wright, who works as a car sales advisor from Bradford, says: “It’s overwhelming but it feels right at the same time.

“I applied because I want to be part of the movement that brings about change in Bradford. This city inspires me every day. I was born here; I have grown up here. I want people to love it the same way I do.”

People from Bradford have always known how special it is and it’s time for us to show the world but also own our own narrative...

for us to show the world but also own our own narrative. Too many people who haven’t been here have an opinion of the place. This is the time for this city that cultured me to have its moment to shine.”

Bradford is one of the most diverse places in the country and the UK’s youngest City. Its UK City of Culture year will take place in 2025 and will be a celebration of its vibrant cultural scene. The year of culture is set to deliver more than 1,000 performances working with people from all over the district.

UK City of Culture has had a transformational impact on previous host cities, such as Coventry 2021, securing millions of pounds of investment and acting as a catalyst for creative place-making and cultureled regeneration. The winners of the talent search will get a foot in the door at the BBC while working alongside much-loved presenters like Rima Ahmed and Gayle Lofthouse on BBC Radio Leeds.

Head judge Anita Rani says: “The standard was incredibly high. I know lots of people who judge talent shows say this but genuinely it was difficult. Ultimately, we could only pick three people and we picked the three who had the highest scores and I’m very happy it’s three female winners!

“They had heart, authenticity, warmth. There was something in their eyes and it was their passion for Bradford. They’re all in love with the place. They’re all very different and all have very different stories but that in itself reflects the city.

“People from Bradford have always known how special it is and it’s time

Shanaz Gulzar, Creative Director at Bradford 2025, says: “Thank you to everyone who auditioned for BBC New Voices Bradford, it’s been a joy seeing everyone's passion for our city and district.

“The BBC New Voices scheme is one of the many ways we're working with the BBC to showcase Bradford and the people who make our city so vibrant. Bradford UK City of Culture 2025 is going to be transformational for the district and is an opportunity for us to celebrate the talent and creativity that exists right here in Bradford.

“I am looking forward to working with the winners to capture the buzz of our city and to showcase our exciting plans for 2025 - watch this space!”

Daughter and mother 'special partnership' making waves

Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson, Liza Minnelli and Judy Garland, there's something undeniably close about a daughter and mother relationship, especially when it comes to brides, weddings, and that 'special day'.

Ask Georgia and Nicole (Nikki) Armstrong, of Little Weighton, who teamed up two years ago to create Couture Bridal Hair, which has been making a name for itself on the Yorkshire wedding scene.

Couture Bridal Hair is driven by Georgia’s passion for preparing hair for brides and their wedding party, including the mother-of-the-bride, the bridesmaids, flower girls and bridal party.

“It is something that I have always been interested in,” said Georgia, "and setting up with Mum was

a logical thing to do because of her experience, and the fact we have an easy, strong relationship together. It feels like quite a special partnership."

The mother and daughter team who run an exclusive, country salon near Beverley, have set out to offer a service that is bespoke, personal, high quality, and aims to give the bride and the bridal party a ‘super special day’.

"We want to generate fantastic, positive, happy, memorable feelings for everyone involved and for

weddings and ceremonies that take place in amazing venues," added Georgia.

"Within couture, a look that suits your personality and style is something that is so important to us. Considering dress style, hair accessories, face shape, hair colouring are all factors that can make or break your hairstyle."

Georgia, who trained at East Riding College, continues to improve her business and beauty/hairdressing skills with ongoing training and has learned growing up with Mother Nikki, who has more than 30 years’ experience as a hairdresser and who ran a separate hair and beauty salon for four years.

As trained stylists, they are well versed in the latest trends and techniques in cutting and colouring, while not losing sight of traditional approaches to hairdressing and salon work.

Nikki said: "For the bride, we curate every moment, so all her dreams and desires are meticulously noted. It's not just about a bride's hairstyle but embracing her with a sense of empowerment as she sees her vision of her special day materialise.

"Bridesmaids, flower girls, additional guests including close friends, relations or colleagues, and, of course, the mother of the bride, are treated with the same reverence and care, ensuring that their hairstyles harmonise seamlessly with the overall aesthetic."

This attention to detail extends to close, positive relationships with other wedding suppliers such as photographers and musicians/ singers.

College teams up for ambitious T Level project

Bradford College have partnered with Sewell Construction for the creation of their new multi-million-pound T Level facilities.

The work, which started in May, involves the remodelling of a number of areas within the College’s David Hockney Building to create a highquality training environment, enabling students to learn skills which will help them in their future careers.

The project is the result of a £3.5m Department for Education (T Level Capital Fund – Wave 5) investment. As well as adding new lecturing spaces for business and media students, the project will also create new hair and beauty salon facilities and refurbish the college’s existing training restaurant. Both will be open to the public and used by students to hone their new skills in real-life environments.

The commercial and training salon will include a barber, nail bar and laser room for beauty treatments, and the restaurant will incorporate a new outdoor street food cabin and dining

area. Business and admin students will have refurbished classrooms, and media students will be able to use the latest technology in a new TV studio, editing and sound suites.

The fast-paced construction programme will take place over the summer, allowing students to return in September to their brand-new facilities.

Mayor kickstarts ‘region of learning’ with £10m investment

People facing barriers to employment will benefit from over £9.5 million to help them get the skills they need to secure well-paid work.

Fresh from her re-election as the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin has announced the £10 million package to “make life easier for those who find it the hardest”.

This funding will help those struggling to secure good jobs because of their age, health condition, disability, or difficult personal circumstances.

It follows a high-profile election pledge to build a “region of learning and creativity” for all, where everyone in the region is spurred on to follow their passions in life and lifted up to reach their full potential.

Those set to benefit from six new projects include single parents, people with low digital skills, people who have faced discrimination because of their ethnicity, and people with criminal convictions.

Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin,

said: “There are too many people at a disadvantage when it comes to finding and keeping work, so I’m delighted to get these new initiatives off the ground as part of our focus on a region of learning.

“I want everyone in West Yorkshire to have the skills and opportunities they need to succeed, regardless of their personal circumstances.

“Providing tailored support for people to smash down the barriers they face will help us to grow our economy and build a stronger, brighter West Yorkshire that works for all.”

Part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the six new initiatives aim to reduce inequalities, raise living standards, and grow the economy, while boosting confidence, skills and knowledge throughout the communities of West Yorkshire.

The projects are:

• An innovative pilot between Bradford Council, and local community and outpatient health services, supporting stroke patients receive extra rehabilitation for people with long COVID to help them return to work, while the businesses they work for will receive tailored support to better accommodate their return to the workplace.

• Stepping Stones, an initiative which will provide free access to much loved “community shops” in Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield. Once there, people will be able to buy discounted food and groceries, as well as access grants to pay for expenses like travel and childcare, while they undertake a supportive programme designed to help them humanely back into work.

• Grant funding will be available for voluntary and community organisations, to tap into their extensive local knowledge and relationships with vulnerable people, to ensure the support gets to those who need it the most.

• Two projects are being launched by The Education Development Trust: Future Forward, designed to support 16–24-year-olds into employment or further education, and a ‘Work and Health Programme’ aiming to break down the health barriers to employment.

• Kirklees Council’s project will help people facing health-related barriers to employment, with specialised training set to be provided to frontline staff.

Podcast lifts the lid on the stories behind the headlines

Leading investigative crime journalist Sheron Boyle is the latest industry leader to be under the spotlight in a brand-new podcast series which is themed around success.

The tenacious Yorkshire journalist who, over four decades has broken countless exclusives in the best selling UK newspapers, has repeatedly proved she is not afraid to confront murderers, con men, cheats and wrong doers.

She’s seen huge changes in the tabloid press as well as criticism levelled at the industry during that time – but has remained a steadfast ambassador for her trade and a vocal campaigner for the rights of freelance writers.

In this latest episode of Success Means Business Sheron talks about the changes she’s witnessed in journalism as well as the most high-profile stories she

has worked on throughout her career – and why she’s proud to be a tabloid journalist. She also tells the inside story on some of the UK’s most notorious crime stories.

From the infamous Yorkshire serial killer Peter Sutcliffe to high profile cold cases including the disappearance of Patricia Hall in 1992 – Sheron has worked on some of the north’s most notorious crime stories.

Sheron started out working on local newspapers in West Yorkshire and for the last three decades has forged a successful freelance career, recently featuring in The Confession, an Amazon documentary about the disappearance of Patricia Hall from her home in Pudsey.

Success Means Business is the brainchild of Altrincham based studio Applehead Media with a fortnightly podcast featuring a diverse range of industry leaders who have all achieved

success in their chosen career and how they got there.

The series is fronted by former TV journalist Nicola Sands who runs Applehead alongside her cameraman husband Steve. Filmed in the company’s Altrincham studio, Success Means Business is broadcast fortnightly through Spotify, Apple Podcast and Youtube.

The series digs beneath the surface with its guests, all successful high achievers who have shown incredible determination and tenacity in their industries. It uncovers the stories, challenges and triumphs of a range of remarkable people who have carved their own path to success.

Sheron has always been a strong voice and supporter of freelance journalists –campaigning against “byline banditry” and successfully pushing for the exclusive stories supplied by freelancers to be recognised as their own work and property.

A proud old school hack, she has at times jeopardised her own career by publicly standing up to national newspaper editors to call out bad practices in her

YorkshireBusinessWoman 24

beloved profession. A vocal ambassador for freelance journalists, she has set up support groups to help fight for fair treatment and payments for fellow colleagues.

She said: “It’s a strange feeling being on the other side of some tough questions, but I’ve always felt incredibly proud to be a tabloid journalist, so I never really get tired of talking about the industry and the stories that I’ve worked on. It’s a very humbling feeling when someone is willing to share their story with you and trust you with it.”

Nicola said: “We are so lucky to have access to some really amazing people who have fantastic stories to tell about their own journey in their chosen careers. Our guests are all from very different industries and backgrounds and they all have really interesting stories to tell.

“We really want the series to inspire and motivate and I’m sure everyone, including fellow journalists and journalism students will find Sheron’s story absolutely fascinating, as she reveals insights into sides of lives few of us see up close.”

Debunking the myth: My home is my pension

When it comes to retirement, many rely on their house. After all, a house is often your most valuable asset, with property accounting for 35% of total household wealth in the UK.

When you reach retirement age, there are two options to realise the value of your home: equity release or moving to a smaller property.

Equity release involves mortgaging or selling part of your home and receiving

the cash back as a lump sum or in regular instalments. Although you do not need to repay the mortgage while you live in the property, interest is charged on the money given to you. Even at a low interest rate of 3.5%, the money you owe can

double in size, potentially eating into any inheritance you wish to pass on.

The alternative is to downsize. Unless you are prepared to move to an area where house prices are lower – or to significantly reduce the size of your accomodation – the amount of money you release may not be significant enough to provide a healthy ongoing income stream.

Property does not always offer the best returns

Historically, stock markets have delivered better investor returns than property. UK equities have returned almost three times more than UK house prices since 1989, according to MSCI UK and HM Land Registry data.

Inheritance tax (IHT) is also a key consideration and treating your home as your pension means you will likely end up paying more tax.

Equity Release/Lifetime Mortgages/Home Reversion Plan will reduce the value of your estate and can affect your eligibility for means tested benefits. Tax treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change. The value of pensions & investments and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. You should only consider these products if you are willing to take some risk with your capital. We will consider whether such products are suitable for you before recommending an investment.

Over-reliance on a single asset class

During the 2008 financial crisis, UK house prices fell by close to 20%, and took almost seven years to recover to their previous highs. In the case of UK equities, the fall was greater, but they took less than half the time to recover to their previous highs.

Investing provides an opportunity to

diversify away from the fortunes of the UK economy, on which domestic house prices are highly reliant. It is simple to invest in a portfolio of global assets which will be less sensitive to developments in the UK, such as Brexit or any potential change in government.

If relying on your home for your pension, you also need to consider how it will

fund your retirement. You may want to invest the proceeds to receive a higher income than the interest available from a bank account. If you are prepared to invest your money in retirement, you may want to invest ahead of retirement too.

“Since the beginning of 1989, UK equities have returned almost three times more than UK house prices.”

Chadwick Lawrence receives highest standard of customer care award

Yorkshire Businesswoman corporate partners Chadwick Lawrence, an award-winning Yorkshire law firm, is delighted to announce that the firm has been awarded the prestigious gold accreditation from Investor in Customers (IIC). This accolade represents the highest standard of customer experience excellence.

Investor in Customers offers the opportunity to apply for a recognised accreditation for your customer experience. This is an industry wide assessment which ranks businesses from Bronze to Gold for their customer experience. This is measured from the success of a customer survey and therefore holds exceptional trust and reassurance for the brand.

The IIC assessment involved comprehensive feedback from a sample of the firm’s clients across all areas of its business, focusing on key aspects such as expertise, communication, response times, meeting client needs, going above and beyond, and offering additional services. This valuable feedback is instrumental in the ongoing efforts

of Chadwick Lawrence to improve customer satisfaction and experience.

The IIC Gold accreditation is a testament to the firm’s commitment to maintaining a positive customer experience. Ex-HSBC marketing manager who made a business out of sheep

A mum-of-two from a Ilkley, who’s built her business from her kitchen table to become a nationally recognised brand and award winning entrepreneur, is celebrating having acquired a new member to her flock this weekthe world renowned and multi-award-winning Aardman creation, Shaun the Sheep.

Sarah Turner, 44, the only UK producer of 100% natural British wool dryer balls, and winner of the 2019 Wool Innovation Prize, is delighted to partner with Aardman, to create a special range of products using British wool featuring Shaun the Sheep and with fragrances inspired by the meadow flowers found on Mossy Bottom Farm - and the partnership is off to a great start with the products being selected

as finalists for Branded Gift of the Year in the most highly respected industry accolades, The Gift of the Year Awards, run by the Giftware Association.

Sarah, who has shared her views on the power of wool and the tragedy of it being an underrated material in a TedX talk, has worked with the Aardman licensing team to create a range of products including Laundry

Balls, Laundry fragrance, Linen Spray and Felted Soap.

Having previewed the range at the Spring Fair in Birmingham, as nominated Gift of the Year, the new range was warmly received by retailers scouring for innovative new products to stock. Sarah said, “One of the things I love most about my job is being able to advocate for this incredible magic material, collaborating with Shaun the Sheep allows us to take this message to a much wider audience.”

Last year, Sarah became a member of The Worshipful Company of

YorkshireBusinessWoman 30

Woolmen - one of the oldest livery companies in the City of London, dating back to 1180, due to all the work she does in raising the profile of the magical material that is wool –especially British wool. Sarah is also a proud supporter of the Rare Breed Survival Trust and The Campaign for Wool. Sarah’s business Little Beau Sheep is also a British Wool Licensee - meaning that they can display the “Shepherd’s Crook” of

British Wool so that customers can shop assured that the products contain British Wool.

Rachael Peacock, Senior Brand Manager at Aardman added: "We're delighted to be partnering with Little Beau Sheep on this lovely collection of eco-friendly laundry products. The collaboration is a perfect match for Shaun the Sheep and goes hand in hand with

our One Farm initiative, which actively promotes sustainable living through a planet friendly licensing programme. It's also fantastic to see the collection already nominated for Gift of the Year! Mossy Bottom Farm has never smelled so good!"

Shaun the Sheep’s ethos is the perfect match for Sarah who offers an effective and sustainable alternative to traditional plastic balls. Little Beau Sheep tumble dryer balls are a natural alternative to fabric softeners. Handmade in Yorkshire from 100% British wool, the dryer balls are chemical free, relying instead on their native lanolin content to naturally soften clothes. Natural and biodegradable, they provide a much quieter, planetfriendly alternative to their plastic prototypes. Little Beau Sheep also produces an eco-friendly range of other laundry and body care products.

After leaving her corporate career behind, Little Beau Sheep was born from Sarah’s need for more work life flexibility after having children, along with her desire to create a business that had more connection for her locally. Being a natural creator, combined by personal experiences, led her to the business she has today.

Using British wool, Sarah and her team hand make a range of natural and novel gifts and goodies in the heart of the Yorkshire near Ilkley - from dryer balls for a faster more fragrant tumble-dry to felted soaps for an invigorating bath or shower, there’s a whole flock of fabulous stuff to choose from. All Little Beau Sheep products are designed with sustainability at their core to reduce the use and dependency on single-use plastics.

A Member of Parliament connects with her Constituents

When you book a photoshoot, it’s essential to consider what aspects of your business attract your ideal customer. And it’s no different for MPs who need to engage and appeal to the voters in their constituency.

Dame Andrea Jenkyns, the MP for Morley & Outwood, is preparing for the upcoming General Election. As a representative of her constituency, it's vital for constituents to recognise her, witness her dedication within the constituency, relate to her

beyond work, and trust her authority within the Houses of Parliament.

Within the Constituency

We divided her shoot into two areas: her constituency in West Yorkshire

at three locations, and, of course, Westminster.

First stop was the studio for fresh Headshots, essential for her social media profiles to ensure constituents and MPs alike recognise her. As we live in Morley it was a brief drive for us to her third-floor offices, offering a distinctive view of the Town Hall from her window. Capturing Andrea at her desk and by the window provided constituents with a candid peek into her surgery.

Being in the limelight often sparks curiosity about a person’s personal life. Photos of Andrea in her kitchen and garden, surrounded by her three lively dogs and embracing her role as mum to her gorgeous little boy, creates relatable connections and transparency.

Within Westminster

For those familiar with our photography style, you’ll understand how thrilled we were to have the

YorkshireBusinessWoman 32

majestic Houses of Parliament, with its rich historical furnishings, stunning Gothic, and medieval architecture, as the backdrop to Andrea’s last shoot.

After a whirl-wind tour of the House of Commons Chambers, House of Lords Chambers, the Prince’s Chamber, and the grand Central Lobby, we ventured behind the scenes to Andrea’s office for the first

shoot. There are 650 MPs occupying offices in the 1,100 rooms of the building, so navigating its maze of corridors and stairs is an adventure.

Andrea’s office is colourful and inviting with personal touches and intriguing memorabilia. The Union Jacks reflect her patriotism and devotion to her country, elements we made sure to highlight in her photos.

From there we headed to the grander parts of the building such as St Stephen’s Hall and Westminster Hall. The bustling staff and excited tourists weaved around us, as we did them, and we managed to capture some amazing shots.

On the terrace and in the gardens, we incorporate other iconic London attractions into the pictures, such as the Elizabeth Tower (famous for hosting Big Ben), the London Eye, Westminster Bridge, Whitehall, and Westminster Abbey.

Planning is Key

As you can imagine a successful photoshoot begins long before anyone steps in front of the camera. Preparation and planning are crucial in creating a collection of images that speak to your ideal customer . . . or voter!

Sharon Flora saved my eye; quite literally!

Sharon is an award-winning dry eye specialist with years of expertise in the world of optometry, specialising in the treatment of dry eye syndrome and contact lenses.

Freda Shafi’s experience with Sharon left her deeply impressed by her dedication, compassion, and exceptional skill in caring for her patients. “When I found myself with a particularly severe inflammation of my eye one evening, I called Sharon. To my immense relief, she answered the phone late that night and, hearing about my discomfort, offered to open her clinic for me first thing in the morning.

“When I arrived, she wasted no time in conducting a thorough examination, asking detailed questions about my symptoms and medical history to

ensure she had a comprehensive understanding of my condition. After completing the examination, I was referred to the eye clinic at Leeds hospital to deal with what appeared to be the start of a corneal ulcer, a condition I have experienced before.

“I was given a referral to expedite the process which really helped as I didn’t want to sit in A&E for hours. The consultants at the hospital confirmed that I needed antibiotics as suggested by Sharon. After a few days my symptoms subsided and thankfully healed. Without her intervention I know it would have taken longer and

quite possibly led to some irreparable damage to my cornea.

“Since recovery; I now have regular examinations and specialist dry eye examinations, which I cannot recommend highly enough. We all suffer from environmental damage to our eyes due to lifestyle. I have a personalised treatment plan tailored to my specific needs which I’m delighted with as I don’t depend on eye drops now.

She discussed various treatment options to get to the root cause of my dry eyes, emphasising the importance of proactive management in controlling my symptoms and improving my overall eye health. My experience with Sharon Flora was nothing short of exceptional, and I would highly recommend her to anyone in need of expert eye care.

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition characterised by a lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. This can lead to discomfort, irritation, redness, and even vision disturbances. Factors such as aging, menopause, environmental conditions, certain medications, and medical conditions like autoimmune diseases can contribute to dry eye. Symptoms may include a gritty sensation, burning or stinging, excessive tearing, and sensitivity to light.

To book your comprehensive dry eye consultation, visit The Eye Retreat Medispa, in David Lloyd, Leeds for a consultation.

Mentoring makes my heart sing

Member Julie Bickerdyke the proud winner of the Yorkshire Women in Business Mentor Award 2024!

I see mentoring as a route to empowerment and independence, and particularly enjoy working with female business owners.

Mentoring makes my heart sing and I do this voluntarily too. I believe in helping others to grow by helping them to be the best version of themselves. It’s vital to remain aligned to personal values, and be true to us. You can be inspired by others, but you can only ever be yourself.

Aside from mentoring my clients, my other mentoring focuses on career development, working with new managers to develop skills and confidence, established managers to boost them to the next level and accountants who are starting their own businesses. Feedback has been that I have given others hope and have inspired them to continue with their businesses.

I’m a portfolio finance director, but

my work goes so much deeper than finance. Yes, I want my clients to understand the numbers and to know which numbers are important in their business; I also want them to enjoy working in their business and have confidence to try new ways of thinking or let go of ideas that are not working. Sometimes less is more! We work on getting them to a position where they are taking home enough money from the business to allow them to live the life, they want without losing their integrity.

I have regular meetings with clients to discuss their goals and ambitions and how they are progressing towards them. I have strong relationships with my clients, who change over the years as they grow and no longer need me; in the main they are made up of charities, not for profits, women led businesses, and businesses that focus on giving back to the community.

I’m a CIMA-qualified (Chartered Institute of management Accountants) finance director and the Chair of the CIMA Members in Practice (MiP) Committee. I work with the committee to serve MiPs across the UK by organising and delivering events and webinars.

I speak at events to business owners sharing my knowledge and experiences of how I have developed my career and started and grown my own successful business.

It’s important to me that we find balance in the world. I’m studying for a Feng Shui qualification which I am finding fascinating. My other hobbies are yoga, qigong and jigsaws. julie@moonstonefd.co.uk

Nearly 25 years ago, Hazel Barry founded H2k Botanicals to create sleep and wellness toiletries and skin care.

“All my products are formulated for sensitive skin, using the superanti-inflammatory melon seed oil originating from the Kalahari Desert. It’s this special oil mixed with our natural formulations that enables us to supply 5-to-7-star hotels and health clubs, alongside many other brands from Emirates lounges to Middle Eastern palaces.

“In addition we have our beautiful flagship store in the fashionable Montpellier Quarter of Harrogate, which has been open for 10 years, alongside a wide retail online offering at www.h2kbotanicals.com.

“From hair and body gels, facial skin care and sleep mists, to wellness candles and room fragrance, we are renowned for our beautiful fragrances and gentle formulae, caring for the skin day and night.

“Whilst I’ve had the business for many years, I still find it challenging juggling family and work commitments. In the early days, I worked around the clock (as you can aged 25!), but as the brand grew and I became a working mum in my early 30’s, I realised this wasn’t sustainable.

“Thus, by the time I was 34, I literally collapsed from exhaustion. It took me a while to bounce back, but I realised that, I either learnt how to delegate or I’d be permanently shattered, and the business would suffer. It was then I began to delegate, taking on staff and new premises. The business soon prospered and despite two recessions

After 25 years, you know it makes “Scents”

and Covid, we’re still here 24 years later.

“Thankfully I’ve a great team, most of which have been with me for many years. They are my second family as they have my back and I have theirs. Having said that, I’m still working long hours, but I guess I can’t change myself and being creative and focused, are just things I was born with. Sadly, there are lots of things I wasn’t born with such as “attention to detail, being clumsy and filling in forms correctly” but thankfully, I spend a lot less time doing this, than the fun things.

“In Autumn this year, we’ll go into our 25th year, which is something I’m really proud of. I just hope the next 25 years, will be just as much fun!

International fashion is high on Lucy’s agenda

Yorkshire Businesswoman member Lucy Millard is a 20-year-old full-time student at the University of Huddersfield studying International Fashion Buying and Management as well as the owner/founder of the Wardrobe Ladies Fashion.

Her business began in 2020 when she was only 16 years old, COVID-19 hit, and her high school journey was cut short. “I've always followed fashion and loved reading magazines, shopping and getting glam. I knew I would have a career in fashion as I hoped to study textiles at New College Pontefract.

“After research and help from my family I began renting a room above a pub in Pontefract town centre and I started live streaming items of clothing offering local delivery and postage to ladies. As lockdown progressed and restrictions lifted my platforms were growing and I had a lovely following of women. At the beginning of 2021 premises on Ropergate became available known as Kingston Jewellers, after lots of deliberating I decided to take the

project on and in May of 2021 I opened my doors.

Since then, I have studied 3-A levels at Pontefract New College, and I am now in the second year of my degree. I love creating content online and communicating with ladies who are customers that I now call my friends.

Despite being only 20 years old I thrive when conversing with ladies who shop at the wardrobe. I target women aged 30-70, and my prices begin at £15 up to £50. Since opening my boutique, I have established my business by hosting events and pop-up shops to diversify my customer base and offer exciting opportunities for the local people of Pontefract. My affordability, personalised caring services and education about

fashion forecasting and buying make the wardrobe my lifestyle, not my job.

Over the next five years, I hope to expand my wardrobe whether that's investing in bigger and better online e-commerce services or more premises, as well as completing my degree to a high standard which will open doors for a future in the fashion industry. I began this business from scratch, learning along the way from my mistakes and successes. Through COVID-19, the cost-of-living crisis and juggling being a teenager. I love what I do and that's all that matters, I'm passionate about being passionate and look forward to a future in business and retail.

Turn your bathroom into a spa haven

Self-care and wellness have taken centre stage following the pandemic. Our awareness of our mental health and well-being has led to a far greater interest in self-care rituals from pampering ourselves, to seeking out new and innovative bathing and shower products. The healing benefits of a hot bath have long been praised, and a daily dip can even help us to relieve muscle tension, which can be particularly beneficial if you lead an active lifestyle.

TikTok is known for driving trends, particularly in the beauty industry, and the search for the term ‘everything shower’ was up 201.6% since last year. “Showertok” and #fullbodydeodrant flooded

social media platforms globally last year - covering everything from cleansing, to exfoliating, shaving, and moisturizing, from brands that launched as skincare or haircare brands first, and have now extended into body care. This is a category that has expanded significantly over the past few years, as we turn our attention from focusing primarily on facial skincare, to those areas that extend beneath our neck.

Treatment led innovation.

You may be questioning just how different your skin beyond your neck is, and why you can’t use your favourite skincare serum on other parts of your body. Surely if it good

enough for your face, it is good enough for your décolletage. Facial skin contains a higher density of sebaceous glands, resulting in facial products being formulated lighter in texture; body care products need to be richer and thicker to ensure they are more hydrating. As consumers we have become far more ingredient savvy, and body care brands are now launching new product ranges with actives, like retinol body care which has grown 13.2% since 2022. Over the past few years there has been greater awareness of how to treat sensitive skin including acne prone skin, and as body acne has become less stigmatized, brands are launching products that not only reduce breakouts but also treat scarring.

There is also a far greater focus on menopause today – from what causes

YorkshireBusinessWoman 42

this, to how to treat the menopause and this has extended into skincare and body care. The beauty industry largely overlooked the distinct needs of menopausal women, focusing instead on anti-aging remedies that often fell short of addressing specific challenges brought on by hormonal fluctuations. Traditionally, menopausal skincare products were marketed under the guise of "antiaging," extending a narrow narrative that failed to acknowledge the impact of hormonal imbalances on the skin. Dryness, loss of elasticity, increased sensitivity—these were just a few of the issues that women grappled with during this transitional phase, yet finding effective solutions remained elusive. Retailers including Boots and Superdrug have introduced new menopausal body and skincare brands.

Turn your bathroom into a spa

Not all body care products are purely about being benefit-led – whilst we may be more cautious about applying fragranced products to our face – when it comes to bathing and pampering our bodies, we are overtly embracing scent. From shower gels that wake us up in the morning with invigorating citrus notes, to sultry, seductive, and woody notes of incense, sandalwood and amber that lull us to sleep, many brands place fragrance centre stage. We have also seen the revival of the humble bar of soap – but in a new format. Loofah bars of soap gently exfoliate the skin, through particles of poppy seed and sea salt, leaving it soft to the touch and then to ensure you lock in moisture following your bath, brands are launching hydrating body serums, that enable an effective application through a spray delivery system.

skincare regimes, our hands are one of the most visible parts of our body. Prone to ageing quickly through increased exposure to the environment, hand washing and sanitizing, and just day-to-day physical wear, this neglect can lead to signs of aging such as wrinkles, crepiness, dark spots, and dryness. Our hands and feet are being given more tender loving care – with the emergence of hand creams, that protect them from the sun, through to reducing signs of ageing, through the inclusion of retinol and niacinamide. Beauty brands like Dior, Neom and Glossier have stepped up their game, offering innovative products designed that cater to our specific needs.

There are a plethora of exquisite bath-time formulas lining the shelves of brands like Aromatherapy Associates, Bamford to Molton Brown, L’Occitane and Rituals. From restorative salts and beautiful oils to foaming bubbles and nourishing milks, these innovative new formulas can make this evening ritual your favourite treat after a busy day. Whilst your wallet may not thank you for this, your body certainly will.

Law Firm Launches Dedicated Employee Ownership Service

A Yorkshire law firm has launched a dedicated employee ownership advisory service.

Employee Ownership Advisor is a new service from Ison Harrison designed to provide business owners with the ultimate resource for navigating the world of Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs).

With its own dedicated website the service aims to help business owners

looking to explore the benefits of an EOT for their business. Having experienced the advantages of employee ownership themselves, the firm’s team of expert lawyers is well placed to answer questions and provide no-obligation advice to business owners looking to make the switch.

The service covers everything from the basic principles of employee ownership, the process

of transitioning to an EOT, trust management, employee engagement, company governance and rewards and benefits.

Employee ownership is becoming an increasingly popular model for British businesses. According to figures compiled by the Employee Ownership Association, 332 businesses transitioned to employee ownership in 2022. As of June 2023, the total number of companies owned

YorkshireBusinessWoman 44

partially or fully by their employees had reached a record 1,418, marking a 37% growth in just 12 months.

Ison Harrison was the UK’s first law firm to become a 100% employeeowned business in January 2022 after the three main shareholder directors agreed to sell the business to an Employee Ownership Trust.

Record

270 qualifying team members at the firm recently received a profit distribution pay-out marking the second anniversary of becoming employee-owned. As a result of the firm’s strong financial performance, individual profit distributions approved by Ison Harrison’s Board of Trustees saw all eligible employees receive a tax-free distribution of £4,000 each, an increase of £400 on the £3,600 payment paid the previous year.

The firm, which employs more than 270 staff across the region, posted a record turnover of over £22 million last year, up 16% from £19 million in 2022.

Employee Ownership Advisor is the brainchild of Richard Coulthard, director and head of commercial services. Since launching the service, the firm has received a significant number of preliminary enquiries from business owners across the region and beyond and is already helping several local businesses through the transitionary stages.

He commented: “The move to employee ownership has been hugely positive and advantageous for Ison Harrison. This success is the inspiration for the Employee Ownership Adviser as we want to share our experience of the process and use our expertise to help other business owners by transitioning from

traditional business ownership to the EOT model.

“We have taken a unique approach to set ourselves apart from our competitors. We are proud to be an EOT, which helps distinguish us from other firms.

In embracing employee ownership, we have fostered a culture of collaboration, incentivised performance, and ensured our clients receive exceptional service. This experience and knowledge are now being passed on to business owners so that they and their workforce can enjoy the many benefits of employee ownership. Our service website provides practical insights, expert advice, and invaluable tips to ensure a smooth and successful transition. We fully understand the challenges that may arise, and we are well equipped to provide the knowledge and strategies needed to overcome them.”

‘First Lady’ for The Great Yorkshire Show

YorkshireBusinessWoman 46

The very first Great Yorkshire Show was in October 1837 after group of leading agriculturalists, led by the third Earl Spencer, (an ancestor of Diana, the late Princess of Wales) met at the Black Swan Hotel in York to discuss the future of the farming industry.

A decision was made to form the Yorkshire Agricultural Society to improve and develop agriculture and organise an annual show.

The first show was held in Fulford York in 1838 and the first attendance figures were taken in 1842 when 6044 visitors were recorded.

Like many shows in the early days the Yorkshire Show did not have a permanent base, but a decision made in 1950 to build a permanent showground. The Harrogate Showground was purchased. Since then, the showground’s prestigious conference and events venue and Pavilions of Harrogate have gone

from strength to strength and events have increased dramatically. The showground is now busy 12 months of the year and a £11m redevelopment has made it the largest event space in the Northeast.

The show has been popular with the Royal Family since the beginning, privileged to welcome members of the Royal Family over the years some of whom have been patrons. The Late Queen Elizabeth was the first female and remained so for 45 years. King Charles has been Patron since 1998.

Today, the show is about to have a new female, leading as show director when Rachel Coates takes over from 2025. Dairy farmer Rachel will make history as the first female to take over the voluntary role of show director.

I am honoured to have been chosen to take the reins of the show. I have visited the show since I was 18 years old...

Hailing from Shipley, and a graduate of Skipton Girls High, she will take over from Charles Mills who has been in the post since 2016. The handover will take place immediately after this year’s event.

Rachel who studied land management and worked in the family business growing up, always keen to help her dad who was an auctioneer said: “I am honoured to have been chosen to take the reins of the show. I have visited the show since I was 18 years old. My goal is to promote the show to younger audiences, so it continues to grow and flourish for years to come.”

A member of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society Council and

Yorkshire BusinessWoman 47

farms herself on the edge of Baildon Moor, Rachel has also worked in advertising, retail, education, and agriculture and is currently a director of a CIC which runs a local farmers market. Passionate about British food, Rachel is also a member of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Women in Farming network and enjoys volunteering on countryside days for schoolchildren.

Estee Lauder and Browns support York Fashion Week

In early May, we were lucky enough to be invited to the Middleton Hotel in York to an afternoon tea organised by Browns Department Store and Estee Lauder to support York Fashion Week.

Located in the heart of this historic city, Middleton’s is a luxury hotel with a collection of the city’s past, present, and future, with buildings such as the famous Sir Joseph Terry cottages, Chaplin House and Lady Cromwell House, tracing back to famous York figures.

Organised by Browns of York, a familyowned business who opened the first store in York in 1890 by founder Alderman Henry Rhodes Brown, before expanding into Helmsley, Beverley, and Gainsborough, guests were welcomed to enjoy a luxury afternoon tea and make-up masterclass with artists from

Estee Lauder which included a cheeky gin tasting from the team at York Gin.

After watching the make-over of one of the guests who was preparing for her upcoming wedding, by Kaitlyn Turlin, a national pro artist, with more than 8 years’ experience as a make-

up artist with Estee Lauder, working on brand campaigns, PR events and New York Fashion week, guests left with expert makeup knowledge and a lovely gift bag that included a £10 off voucher against Estee Lauder purchases made on the day and plenty of goodies.

Research initiative seeks input from ethnic minority owned businesses

Businesses owned by people from ethnic minority groups are being urged to take part in research which will examine their business confidence levels, barriers to growth, and gather data on their business support needs.

The research, a collaboration between the Northern Powerhouse (NPH) Ethnic Minority Business and Policy Forum, and the University of York will enable better understanding of the challenges and barriers for ethnic minority businesses in the Northern Powerhouse region to influence business support policy. Findings will be used to create the NPH Ethnic Minority Business Barometer.

The idea for the barometer evolved from the publication of The Time to Change Report produced by the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME), at Aston University. The report found that ethnic minority businesses face challenges accessing finance, markets, and quality business support and highlighted the

need for long-term, and targeted support tailored to their specific needs.

Sharon Jandu OBE, director of the NPH Ethnic Minority Business and Policy Forum added: “The report identified that the contribution of ethnic minority businesses to the UK economy could increase four-fold from £25bn to £100bn by realising the changes in the report. This is a huge offering to the economy, but to support the relevant businesses, we need to understand which areas they need assistance, to then pursue policy changes that will enable this help.”

The research team encourages business owners and entrepreneurs from ethnic minority groups to complete a short survey to provide their thoughts and experiences. Ethnic minorities include Black, African, Caribbean, Asian and white minorities, such as Jewish, Gypsy, Roma, and Irish Traveller groups.

The survey will cover a range of valuable questions from business activity and economic optimism to sources of startup funding, support requirements and international trade ambitions. It will

also review the barriers facing minorityowned businesses, check for trends and provide regional and sector insights.

Findings will be shared widely with business advisors and policy makers across the NPH region, acting as a catalyst for positive change to policy and business support.

The research will be led by Professor Trehan, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Partnerships and Engagement at the University of York and a key contributor to national debates on leadership, enterprise development and diversity in small firms and business.

Kiran said: "Ethnic minority owned businesses are vital to the success of the regional and national economy. To ensure the future success of the region, we need to have a clear understanding of the needs of these businesses to provide them with the support they need to drive inclusive growth. The annual Business Barometer will provide much needed data to influence policy change and ensure diversity in our entrepreneurial community across the North of England.”

The Biskery: biscuits, kindness, and female empowerment

Saskia Roskam and Lisa Shepherd co-founded The Biskery, a handmade biscuit company in 2016. This dynamic duo, driven by the challenges of motherhood and the desire for a more flexible work-life balance, embarked on a mission to not only build a successful branded and personalised biscuit business, but also to uplift and empower mothers in the workplace.

As young mothers frustrated with the inflexibility of traditional work, Saskia and Lisa set out to create a life that accommodated both their professional aspirations and family needs. The Biskery, a Leeds-based personalised and branded biscuits bakery, was born out of their shared passion for baking and the longing for the tastes of their home countries (The Netherlands and Germany). The initial focus on monthly local famer’s

markets paved the way for a unique offering – of continental inspired biscuits, cakes, and pies.

Leveraging their background in digital marketing, Saskia and Lisa strategically developed a strong online presence through their website. The transition to move away from cakes and pies and focus entirely on personalised and branded biscuits through their e-commerce channels in 2018 proved timely, as the demand for personalised biscuits skyrocketed during the pandemic. The Biskery, though a modest operation initially, secured a prominent position on Google for key terms, attracting customers searching for bespoke biscuits.

The pandemic posed challenges, but Saskia and Lisa turned them into opportunities by spreading joy with their free kindness-themed jam

biscuits. These biscuit giveaways, bearing messages of hope and warmth, not only boosted morale but quadrupled sales. This unexpected success prompted a decisive shift –leaving their salaried jobs to pursue The Biskery full-time.

Kindness as a Business Strategy

For The Biskery, kindness is not just a core value; it's a pivotal aspect of their business strategy. Saskia and Lisa prioritise their team's well-being, recognising the unique challenges faced by working mothers. Their gratitude biscuits, given away during the pandemic and still today every Tuesday, demonstrate the profound impact of small gestures on people's everyday lives.

Kindness and connection are integral to their business strategy. While financial success is acknowledged, they emphasise the importance of aligning with personal values. Both co-founders believe that genuine contentment arises from the pursuit

of meaningful goals, not just financial gains.

Saskia and Lisa challenge the conventional business model, particularly its limitations for working mothers. Despite the strides in flexible working arrangements, they highlight persistent barriers that force talented women out of the workforce.

From a kitchen table venture to a flourishing bakery, The Biskery stands as a testament to the transformative

power of small acts of kindness, innovation, and female empowerment in business. The business has won numerous awards from 2x Great Taste Awards, a Great British Food Award, Yorkshire Businesswoman new business of the year to business personalities of the Year.

As they continue to evolve, Lisa and Saskia are not just crafting delicious biscuits; they are reshaping the narrative of what a successful and compassionate business can achieve.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park offers artistic development opportunity

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) has launched the 2024 Yorkshire Graduate Award that offers a residency opportunity for a graduate artist to develop their practice.

For over 47 years, artist residencies have been at the heart of YSP, offering opportunities for emerging artists to reflect on and move forward with their creative practice. Launched in 2018 to help nurture regional artistic talent, the Award attracts an eclectic mix of entries that feature a variety

Getting

of mediums including sculpture, performance, film, photography and audio sound. The residency is open to recently graduated BA or MA artists, from any Yorkshire-based university. The winner will be invited to work on-site during the autumn/winter of 2024 or spring 2025.

The Award offers a residency of up to two weeks at the Park, including onsite accommodation, access to facilities such as metal and wood workshops, and time with the YSP technical team. The recipient also receives a £750 fee and £250 for materials to develop new

YorkshireBusinessWoman 60

ideas, as well as invaluable support from YSP’s curatorial team.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for an early-career artist to reflect on their practice, experiment with new ideas and consider next steps” explained Louise Lohr, YSP’s Deputy Curator. “Every year we see exceptionally talented graduates submitting their work, so it is in an incredibly difficult task choosing just one award winner.”

Previous winners include Leedsbased Astrid Butt in 2023-24 who uses animal-human hybrid characters to explore gender, motherhood, and domestication. Studying for a master’s degree in fine art at University of Leeds, her work has developed from a feminist perspective. Influenced by the mood and style of classic David Lynch horror films, Butt utilised YSP’s 500acre parkland to full effect shooting

expansive and atmospheric footage for her short new film.

Astrid explained: “When I began applying for this award last year, I couldn’t have envisioned the doors that it has opened for me artistically. This has been my first residency, and it has been life changing to say the least.

“Getting the Yorkshire Graduate Award has been an incredible opportunity. The time I have spent at the park has been unforgettable. As a Fine Art graduate, it is increasingly difficult to find a fulfilling career that matches your skillset or balance a full-time job with your artistic practice. Yorkshire Sculpture Park has given me the opportunity to develop my skills, compensated me for my work and time, and given me a platform to share my art with the public, for which I am endlessly thankful!”

Anyone who is interested in applying for the Award can submit a PDF document of up to 5 pages including a short statement on their current practice, information about their final degree work, images of their wider work and a simple outline of their plans if they were to be offered the residency. This plan doesn’t have to be definitive and can change and evolve during the residency.

YSP accepts the written elements of the application as audio recordings, videos, or voice notes of up to 5 minutes. YSP welcomes applications from all artistic disciplines and all access needs will be considered. For more information about YSP visit www.ysp.org.uk. Applications

Elegance and comfort at The Dakota Hotel Leeds

Located in the centre of Leeds, nestled between Russell Street and the vibrant pedestrianised Greek Street with its array of bars and restaurants, The Dakota Hotel stands as a beacon of luxury and elegance. My recent stay at this esteemed hotel was marked by comfort, impeccable service, and a plethora of amenities that catered to every need.

The Dakota Hotel’s prime location has easy access into the centre of Leeds, with its shopping districts, and public transportation. So, whether you're in town for business or leisure, the hotel's central location is incredibly convenient. From the ground floor bar, guests can access the well-lit outdoor terrace with plenty of tables, patio heaters and fluffy warm blankets for those chilly evenings.

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon,

receiving a very warm welcome first from the concierge who came out to our car and to ask if we required assistance with our bags or car parking, then the friendly reception staff, who quickly checked us in and directed us to our first-floor room. Throughout our stay, staff went above and beyond to ensure that we had a pleasant stay.

Dakota has undergone several changes over the last few months, most notably

YorkshireBusinessWoman 62

turning the upstairs bar and boardroom into a selection of garden suites. Our room, a king garden room was a haven of comfort and style, featuring plush bedding, modern furnishings in the hotels signature black and grey with

its own private stunning garden terrace. The attention to detail was evident, from high quality toiletries to the well-stocked refreshment bar with high end coffee machine and a good selection of teas. The bathroom was gorgeous with luxury walk in shower and large vanity area with a huge mirror and excellent lighting.

I was particularly impressed with the desk / dressing table that boasted excellent lighting, a large mirror, plug

Yorkshire BusinessWoman 63

sockets and even a slate tile embedded into the countertop for those hot curling irons. The attention to detail was very impressive. Outside is amazing, the room had a large terrace with dining table for four people and a huge comfortable sofa with coffee table. The terrace is screened all around giving a degree of privacy and has several patio heaters making it usable all year round.

As we arrived on a Sunday afternoon, we were booked in for Sunday lunch in the impressive dining room. At once we were captivated by the warmth and the tasteful décor that exuded a sophisticated yet inviting charm. Once seated, we were greeted by a knowledgeable waiter who offered the menus offering local cuisine prepared with the freshest ingredients and informed us of the day’s specials. The ambience is elegant, making it an ideal spot for both casual and special occasions.

We ordered from the Sunday lunch

menu which was extensive. I opted the chicken terrine with mustard, pickles and sourdough, my companion the Bruschetta with Isle of White Tomato, burrata and basil. For main course I had roast breast of chicken, my companion roasted leg of lamb, both served with roast potatoes, maple glazed root vegetables and of course Yorkshire Pudding. We both followed with Apple Crumble with Cinnamon Ice Cream.

After the late lunch we headed to the main bar to enjoy a glass of fizz before retiring to our room.

The following morning, we rose early and headed back to the dining room for breakfast. The restaurants bar area had been transformed into a breakfast buffet that included everything you would expect at breakfast from a high-end hotel. There was a large selection of pastries, muffins and breads alongside bowls of cereal and fruit and a large selection of fruit juices. Seated, we ordered tea with

my dining companion opting for the full English breakfast from the menu. I decided to head to the buffet for fruit and toast and was a little disappointed when the cooked breakfast arrived as it looked delicious, everything cooked to perfection with lean bacon and wellcooked sausages. Well, that will be my choice next time!

As we were heading off to work, we needed a swift checkout and the hotel didn’t disappoint, friendly reception staff checked us out swiftly and asked if we needed help with our luggage or if concierge needed to collect our car from the local car park.

For location, style, luxury and quality, the Dakota Hotel is the place to book when staying in Leeds, you won’t be disappointed.

Your gut: the root of all health

Recently, Yorkshire Businesswoman editor Gill Laidler was invited to Dunesforde Vineyard on the outskirts of York for a lunch where attendees learned about gut health and why this is important to our overall health and wellbeing.

Driving through the beautiful countryside on a warm sunny day, I wasn’t sure what to expect for the lunch, how could looking after our gut be beneficial to our overall health?

Driving through the gates at Dunesforde Vineyard, I was greeted by a large field of vines that were inspired by the vineyards of Tuscany. The first vines were planted in 2016, I was informed by owner Mandy Townsend as I entered the impressive bar. The debut still wines appeared in October 2019 with fantastic results, 2020 saw the introduction of five traditional method sparkling wines. There are two impressive tasting rooms with views over the vineyards and a beautiful outdoor terrace where visitors can make the most of the sunshine.

Mandy escorted me to the first floor into a lovely intimate dining room overlooking the vines where I was greeted by Georgina Hickman and Michaela Hanna, my hosts for the day.

Once everyone was seated, Georgina, a registered nutritionist welcomed us and began her presentation whilst Michaela headed to the kitchen to start our lunch. A 45-minute presentation explained the benefits of different foods, mostly plant foods that benefit our gut. She explained the digestive process and how this affects our health.

Presentation over, it was time to learn from Michaela the benefits of good food and how we can prepare these menus at home. Appetisers were butter beans marinated in different ways with lemon, garlic,

and sun-dried tomato. The starter was delicious, shredded duck with a rocket and chicory salad with orange, followed by grilled mackerel with lentil salad. To finish, the group of about 10, enjoyed chocolate brownies made with quality chocolate and plenty of seeds. Of course, lunch was accompanied by wine from the vineyard.

Should anyone be interested in attending any of the lunches, the next is on 18th September, eating for the brain, or 28th November, eating to support the immune system, you can contact Georgina by email: georgina@numindsetnutrition.com.

A culinary journey at Ambers within Cedar Court Hotel

Nestled in the heart of the bustling town of Harrogate, just a short walk from the railway station and town centre, the new Ambers Restaurant within the Cedar Court Hotel overlooking the famous Stray, beckons with promises of a culinary adventure. Having heard glowing recommendations from those who attended the press night opening (sadly I wasn’t available), I ventured into this gastronomic haven with eager anticipation, and I must say, my dining experience surpassed all expectations.

Inspired by the spirit of Lady Amber Fitzwilliam, the pioneering scientist and society wit who ran her famous salon from the hotel in the early twentieth century, Ambers offers a Yorkshire take on contemporary British cuisine in a sophisticated and relaxed setting.

The space has undergone a significant £500k renovation to create a high-quality destination through its menu, service, and décor.

Stepping through the entrance, I was immediately struck by the restaurants inviting ambiance.

Seating up to 75 guests, the beautiful ornate room inspired by the buildings rich history the design

explores textures of coral and algae, the subject of Lady Amber’s most celebrated research.

Settling into our seats, we were greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff who guided us through the menu, which was carefully curated to showcase the best of Yorkshire and British Isles and with the team working closely with local producers of food and drink. Dishes include 28-day dry

YorkshireBusinessWoman 66

aged steaks and roasted Gressingham Duck but as it was Sunday we chose from the extensive Sunday lunch menu.

At this point we were greeted by Oliver Stott the hotel manager. Our paths have crossed before when he worked for a different hotel, so it was lovely to catch up.

Back to the menu and for starters I chose the Easingwold Ham Hock & sweetcorn pressing served with burnt onion puree, bacon dust and micro herb. It was delicious and portion size was perfect. My companion chose the woodland Mushroom and Baby Spinach Risotto served with crispy fried vegetables and vegetarian hard cheese, again delicious although he would have liked a few more mushrooms in the dish.

Ambers is a true gem among the towns dining establishments, offering a culinary voyage that delights...

For te main course, I opted for the braised Beef and Ale Pie, a recommendation from Oliver with peppered beef and shallot gravy. This came with a bowl of vegetables, cauliflower cheese, beans, and cabbage as well as carrots and parsnips. This was delicious with lots of lean beef in the pie with plenty of gravy, a change from usually having to ask for more!

My companion chose pan fried Salmon Fillet with seasonal Jersey Royals, creamed peas, baby leek and candied Heritage carrot. The perfect choice he said, full of flavour and a great portion size. Many of the guests around us were opting for the traditional Sunday lunch of either beef, pork, or chicken, admiring from afar, these plates looked amazing (perhaps next time!)

To complement our meal, we indulged in a bottle of crisp, aromatic white wine Hans Greyl Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.

As I savoured the last lingering bites of my dessert—a decadent chocolate truffle cake with black cherry compote, orange sorbet and chocolate scroll, my companion opting for a selection of locally produced dairy ice cream —I reflected on the unforgettable culinary journey I had embarked upon at Ambers. From the impeccable service to the exquisite cuisine, every aspect of my dining experience was nothing short of exceptional.

In conclusion, Ambers is a true gem among the towns dining establishments, offering a culinary voyage that delights the senses and leaves a lasting impression. Whether you're a seasoned food enthusiast or simply seeking an unforgettable dining experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Ambers as a must-visit destination for anyone with a passion for fine cuisine.

The Neurodivergent Spoken Word Poet captivating audiences around the world …

From TedX talks and open mic sessions to headlining at global events and poetry slams, celebrated spoken word artist and business poet, Kate Jenkinson, says human and emotional connection is at risk of being lost in the world of artificial intelligence.

Originally a research scientist turned award-winning HR business leader with over 20 years of senior leadership experience in global, national, and regional organisations, Kate now runs her own executive coaching business by day, Next Step HR, and by night is a performance poet, delivering spontaneous

spoken word finales for all kinds of events, including charity awards ceremonies and leadership conferences. She said:

“During the pandemic, like many people, I re-evaluated my priorities. I wanted to focus on

personal happiness which, for me, meant putting my family first as well as helping others find their flow and giving back to those who have nothing. I do this by having conversations, through coaching and my poetry – and I’ve never been happier.”

Having recently given one of her incredible Spoken Word Finale performances in front of one thousand delegates at the TedX Women Amsterdam event, Kate, who is from Doncaster, says spoken

YorkshireBusinessWoman 70

word is about capturing the essence of human experience, something AI simply can’t do.

“You could say I was there for the entertainment, but the speakers told me they were standing in the wings listening to my summary and they all felt seen and heardand they generally don’t get that kind of feedback. They rock up, do their thing but don’t get the validation. AI is very transactional

and dehumanising. It normalises everything. Spoken Word is all about capturing the essence of human experience and, by doing so, truly connecting with people.”

It’s this connection that has event organisers coming back to her time and time again once they have experienced her poetry in person. In fact, feedback from one charity fundraiser saw their donations doubled once attendees had heard her poetry performance.

When people genuinely care, they want to give more. It’s all about real, emotional connection.”

Kate is neurodivergent. For her, this encompasses having an ADHD brain and aphantasia, which means she is unable to form images in her mind’s eye. It was her love of the spoken word that led to her setting up Prickly Pear, an accessible open mic event for those with disabilities.

“Prickly Pear Open Mic shines a light on all disabilities, whether physical, mental, hidden, or unhidden. It’s run by neurodivergent poets so we understand how difficult it can be to perform when the world is set up for the abled. That’s one of the reasons we are an online event. There’s no barrier to poetry. It’s open to everyone but priority is given to those with a disability and/ or those who want to share words about disability.”

But, she says, being neurodivergent is not a superpower.

“Saying it’s a superpower makes me different. I’m not different. I’m human and I want to belong. My poetry shows the humanity in all of us. I want my audiences to feel heard and connected, to go away feeling inspired and wanting to connect with other people.”

She has also recently been commissioned to write a poem for Ability Today, an organisation that works with the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) to train people with disabilities to be journalists. She has, in fact, written two pieces – one entitled ‘Don’t call me inspirational’ – which Ability Today think is so important a poem, it should become an anthem for all those with disabilities.

Seven strategies for work-life balance in business

Achieving work-life balance while growing a business can often feel like an elusive goal.

It’s very easy to find ourselves consumed by everything that needs to be done and overwhelmed with all the hats we need to wear. This can leave no time for personal hobbies, relationships, or our own overall wellbeing.

Here are just seven strategies to help you get more balance in your life. They are not rocket science but the desired results will only happen once they’re put into practice!

Set Clear Boundaries

Establishing boundaries between work and personal life is crucial. Set specific work hours and stick to them as much as possible. Communicate these boundaries to your team, clients, and stakeholders to manage expectations.

Prioritise

Not all tasks are created equal. Identify your most important tasks and prioritise them. Focus on high-impact activities that align with your business goals and delegate or delete tasks that are not moving you forward.

Delegate Responsibilities

As a business owner, it's tempting to try to do everything ourselves. However, delegation is critical to freeing up time and energy for other aspects of our life. What tasks can be delegated to your team or outsourced to professionals, so that you can focus

on strategic decision-making and personal priorities?

Schedule Regular Breaks

We need to take time for breaks throughout the day to recharge and avoid burnout. Whether it's a short walk or a coffee break, including regular breaks in our day helps with focus, productivity, and overall well-being.

Embrace Technology

Use technology to streamline business processes and save time. Automation tools, project management software, and communication platforms can help us work more efficiently, giving more time to focus on personal activities and relationships.

Practise Self-Care

It’s very easy to put ourselves at the bottom of the list of priorities. Treat

yourself as your most important customer (which you are) and make self-care a priority in your life. Schedule time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Taking care of our physical, mental, and emotional well-being is essential in the long run.

Reflect and Adjust

Regularly reflect on your work-life balance and adjust as needed. Check what's working well and what could be improved and be willing to adapt your approach accordingly. Achieving balance is an ongoing process, and it's OK to make changes along the way!

Improved family space with communal living spaces, new parents’ bedrooms, art room, music room and play room.

An extended teenage wing, refurbished to give young people more freedom and independence.

A new education centre to provide education and training in specialist palliative care to health and social care professionals across Yorkshire and beyond.

BACK THE BUILD

and help Martin House provide vital care to children and young people

Martin House Children’s Hospice is embarking on our biggest transformation since we opened in 1987. We have launched THE BUILD, to extend and refurbish the hospice, so we can continue to be the lifeline that families need in the future.

We are Yorkshire’s centre of excellence in paediatric palliative care – supporting children and young people with life-limiting conditions along with their families – but our building no longer matches the expertise of our specialist staff.

Clair Holdsworth, chief executive of Martin House, said: “Advances in medicine mean children and young people with life-shortening conditions are living for longer and with more complex needs. Our building needs to adapt to meet the changing needs of children, young people and their families.”

We are asking the people of Yorkshire to help us raise £2 million, to help us complete THE BUILD. This exciting project will see new and improved facilities for children, young people, their families and for staff. These include:

A new children’s wing, with bigger bedrooms, fitted with piped oxygen, integrated hoists and accessible ensuite bathrooms.

A new hydrotherapy and sensory pool, helping to relieve symptoms like pain and muscle spasms, as well as give families the chance to experience swimming together.

Bethany and Jack Harrison, parents of four-year-old Thomas, who has a rare genetic condition, said: “Martin House is a lifeline to us – we don’t know what we’d do without it. But we are looking forward to all the new facilities THE BUILD will bring.

“We’ve never been able to take Thomas swimming because it would be too much to manage in a normal pool, with our other children as well. So we can’t wait to experience the new hydrotherapy pool, as he loves water.”

You can help us give families like Thomas’s the hospice they deserve by backing THE BUILD.

Electrostimulation treatments are nothing to be scared of!

A Leeds woman who survived three major surgeries and conquered several chronic health conditions has brought a revolutionary electrostimulation treatment to the UK for the first time. And the fact that the treatment has helped her tremendously when Western medicine fell short means she’s the ideal ambassador.

As the first ever UK practitioner of The Zenni Electrostimulation Method, Yorkshire Businesswoman member Jowita Penkala now has clinics in London, Leeds and Manchester. She is now helping people find relief from conditions such as asthma, allergies, long Covid, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, thyroid issues, prostate problems, Parkinson’s, joint and muscle pain, bulging discs, menopause, and many others.

Jowita says: “After a 20-year search for an effective holistic treatment, The Zenni Method had a drastic impact on my own chronic health conditions. So much so that I have brought it to the UK for the first time. Electrostimulation can sound a little scary, perhaps because of false connotations with historical interventions, but it is gentle, completely non-invasive and works by lightly stimulating the body so that it can ‘autoregulate’ more effectively.

This can subsequently lead to better harmony and balance and in turn have a beneficial effect on health. I have clients who report that their blood pressure decreased and who feel their rosacea subsided after just two treatments. I also have clients who

After a 20-year search for an effective holistic treatment, The Zenni Method had a drastic impact on my own chronic health conditions...

experience less Parkinson’s-associated tremors, and many use their time in my studios as an opportunity to relax and take some time out”.

The method has already been used to great success on thousands of

people in Australia, Poland, Canada, the USA and other countries over the last 30 years. It uses weak diadynamic and galvanic currents that are delivered to the human body through electrodes. Various scientific publications highlight the beneficial effects of the currents on various chronic health conditions such as Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, post-stroke issues, musculoskeletal problems and many others.

Hello June...

Opening the bi-folds and saying hello to spring and the promise of even warmer days to come

Salads, filled with fresh seasonal produce beckon. Nothing too taxing to create or costly; these are staple ingredients that you can pick up from your local greengrocer, or even grow yourself. Did you know that lettuce is one of the easiest plants to grow and it’s bounty will see you through the summer and autumn. Some lighter desserts this month too, including a recipe I came across whilst living in Australia, which is a hybrid of a traditional Indian dessert fused with a Greek twist! You must try it to believe

Staple Spring Salad…

One of my favourite spring / summer salads right here; made up of simple wholesome and fresh seasonal staples as shown. Nothing completes a salad more than a delicious dressing, which also brings out the flavours of each element. I’m a big fan of creamy dressings with a little spicy kick, provided by Dijon mustard. Do give it a try!

Ingredients :

For the Spring salad I used:

• Romaine lettuce

• Cucumber

• Red onion

• Tomatoes

• Sweet red chilli pepper (mild)

how good it is. Finally, a vegan banana bread – surely one of the best recipes for this delicious loaf that I’ve come across. It’s moist and has such an intense flavour of banana throughout. Whether you follow a vegan diet or not, it’s a must try!

All recipes here are versatile enough for you to adapt to suit your own taste and palette as always.

Enjoy! X

• Chickpeas (optional)

• Dressing

• 3tbsp Greek yogurt

• Small bunch fresh mint ground with sea salt

• Sea salt

• Pepper

• 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

• 3 tbsp water

Method

Chop all ingredients and place in a large bowl.

Halva or Semolina cake…

A beautiful cake inspired by the Greek version; I was introduced to whilst living in Melbourne Australia. Melbourne is hugely diverse culturally; one of the biggest communities out there is Greek. This recipe is a fusion of the halva I know and grew up with, combined with the Greek version incorporating other elements such as the delicious sweet and zesty syrup. I replaced olive oil with butter to make it richer and pressed it into a cake tin - genius! This is a truly beautiful representation of fusion.

Ingredients :

• 500g semolina

• 500ml water

• 1 tbsp honey of choice

• 100g sugar (more of desired)

• Saffron strands

• Juice of half a lemon

• 200g butter

Method :

• Create a syrup with the water, honey, saffron, sugar and lemon. Heat this syrup until the sugar dissolves.

• Melt the butter in a saucepan.

• Add the semolina and stir until lumpy like large breadcrumbs.

• Add the syrup gradually, leaving a little aside.

• Add more water until a smooth

Mix the dressing ingredients in a closed container and shake to blend or use a blender.

Once fully mixed pour over the salad

consistency. This takes about 1215 mins.

• Press the cooked halwa / semolina into a cake tin; I used a bundt cake tin.

• Chill in the fridge for an hour.

• Turn out and slice into portions.

• Decorate with your own garnishes. I used edible freeze dried herbs.

• Drizzle with the cooled syrup and serve.

• It can be stored at room temperature for a day or refridgerated for up to two days.

Vegan Banana Bread …

Vegan banana bread. One of the best vegan recipes for this delicious loaf that I’ve ever come across. There’s very little difference taste wise between this and the non vegan variety which I also love. I don’t think I’ll make it any other way now.!

Ingredients:

For the wet ingredients:

• 3 medium sized extra ripe bananas, mashed.

• 150 ml (1/3 cup) coconut oil melted and cooled.

• 150g packed brown sugar (or coconut sugar)

• ½ tablespoon vanilla extract

• 2 tablespoons dairy free milk of choice

• For the dry ingredients:

• 200g all purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

• ½ teaspoon salt

• Optional add-ins:

• 1/2 cup chocolate chips

• 1/2 cup chopped cashews or pecan nuts.

Method:

• Preheat your oven to 180C fan forced. Line a baking tin with parchment paper and grease the inside to prevent sticking.

• In a large bowl mix together the mashed banana, brown sugar, coconut oil, vanilla extract, and milk to a bowl until well combined.

• In another bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and

mix until just combined. Do not overmix; allow for some lumps of banana, etc. Feel free to fold in ½ cup chopped nuts or ½ cup chocolate chips (or both!) if you like.

• Add banana bread batter

into the prepared pan. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until a tester inserted into the middle comes out clean. Allow bread to cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Britain has the wettest winter in years!

Michaela Axford our regular gardening contributor shares tips with us on what we can plant and grow ourselves.

Oh dear, what a calamitous start to the spring we've all had. This last winter has been the eighth wettest since records began over 150 years ago. March saw us having more than one and a half times more rainfall than average.

Whilst this may be fantastic for our reservoirs and means we are less likely to face hosepipe bans later in the summer, it does mean that we all have unseasonably dismal gardens. If you're looking out at your garden right now and bemoaning the lack of colour and variety, I

can assure you that you're certainly not alone.

Our weekly allotment elevenses chat has been dominated by our despair. I have planted and replanted spring seeds and seedlings at least four times now. My first sowings, made

according to the perceived wisdom found on the back of a seed packet, resulted in abject failure as seeds simply rotted away in the compost.

One person did benefit from my early failings - a beautiful brown rat residing in a neighbour’s compost pile has clearly been snacking on my sown peas and I have to say, she's in very fine fettle. As if Walt Disney himself had drawn her. I was almost sad for a moment when my plot neighbour emptied her compost bin and evicted the pea-thief.

A little comfort from the climate came from a stoic West Yorkshire arable farmer, who said that whilst potatoes have not been planted until unusually late in May, they will still harvest. Yields may be lower, but we shall have our lovely spuds despite the inclement conditions. He grows potatoes for McCain, so he surely must be an expert.

Effortless

So, what to do when seeds have not provided the expected results? Why, one cheats of course. I have found my local market in Ossett to be fantastic source of flowers and salad vegetables. Prices are reasonable enough to justify buying a whole raft of perfectly formed plants that I can plant in my plot and crucially, claim some credit for later in the annual allotment show. Bacopia, Begonia and Antirrhinum are inexpensive bedding plants that provide effortless colour and interest to a garden. Marigolds are both attractive and provide a foil

YorkshireBusinessWoman 88

to hungry snails and slugs that have plagued our gardens for month now. I even bought some strawberries that were clearly doing much better than my own to provide a secure prospect of having soft fruits in the early summer. The lovely father and daughter couple running the stall were more than happy to go along with my subterfuge when I confessed my plan.

You may have read recently that the Prime Minister has urged Brits to grow more apples and pears to end an over-reliance on imported fruits. I believe that British-grown apples and pears are in fact the best to be found, so I am encouraged by any plans to make this happen.

Last year was not wholly successful for my fruit trees, possibly due to

blossoms that my trees produced when skies were still overcast and brooding. Apple trees are a lovely addition to even small spaces. Dwarf varieties - often labelled as patioare readily available for a reasonably small outlay in garden centres, and they can often be grown in a pot. Even very young trees will fruit if cared for. If you want to try a small apple tree in your garden, be careful to check what type of fruit it produces, as some are for dessert, some for cider and some for culinary use.

In the spirit of wellness, I have recently chosen to focus on gratitude for what I do have flourishing in the allotment. No, not weeds. There are certainly plenty of them, but that's just going too far. A weekend of rain recently restricted my religious allotment attendance, and I turned my back on the polytunnel very briefly. Within only a matter of days I returned to find that Californian poppies with their brilliant orange petals and Opium poppies with succulent foliage had germinated from the soil I had removed and overwintered under a thick layer of manure outside. I briefly contemplated removing them as they will inevitably demand nutrients from the soil, not to mention space.

a bit of unavoidable neglect by the previous plot-holder. However, whilst I am still a novice orchardist, I have fertilised the soil well and pruned my trees back hoping for a successful harvest in the late summer. If not, I'll be taking a course in Orchard cultivation and showing appreciation for the beautiful

However, the triumph over adversity and the opportunity to attract the all-important pollinators won out. So, what if I must search for tomatoes and cucumbers amongst the foliage? Mother Nature has found a way, and I am going to go along with her. Whilst the climate shifts and conditions fluctuate, one thing is certain for the gardenerhorticulture is an ever-changing pastime, and you must appreciate the moments of magic that it brings.

Suffering from gymtimidation?

Here’s how you can fit yoga into your day without going near a gym!

We’re all aware of the benefits of regular exercise, but when you are a busy professional, finding the time to work out can be tricky.

Going for a run is a great way to move within a full schedule but it’s not for everyone and pavement pounding can take a toll on knees and hips. Gym classes need to be booked in advance and who knows if your meeting will run late that day and you won’t make the start of spin class? Or maybe you prefer to exercise at home where nobody will be watching and you can move at your own time and pace, but don’t know where to start?

Whatever your level of fitness, whatever your physical limitations, whatever time you have available within your day, yoga can meet you wherever you are, supporting you with whatever you need at any moment, to help you move your body and calm your mind too.

Here’s some easy ways to fit yoga into your day:

I only have 2 minutes!

There’s plenty of things you can do in two!

First thing on a morning getting dressed, remain standing on one leg to put on socks and pull-on shoes. Focus and balance are a big part of yoga and if you get into the habit of standing without support when you raise one foot off the ground, you will always be able to do it. This is a ‘use it or lose it’ thing! (If you did lose it, you can regain it with attention and practice).

Waiting for the kettle to boil is two minutes you can spend on standing stretches. If you are in a private place then you can sweep your arms above the head, clasp hands then hinge sideways from the waist to one side, then the other and then forward fold - upper body folding over lower as you hang from the hips. From here, take hold of the elbows with the palms and sway from side to side like a rag doll. This lengthens the whole body but especially the spine, and it helps your concentration too as the blood moves toward the brain, it’s great for increasing energy and helping maintain glowing skin - an instant radiance booster!

If you are waiting for the kettle to boil in a public place - the office kitchen for example, you can easily

YorkshireBusinessWoman 90

do calf raises without attracting too much attention. Stand with the feet hip width apart and come up onto the balls of the feet, hold for a second then roll down and repeat. Flat feet are best, but this could be done in heels if you must. However, if you can slip the stilettos off for this practice then when you bring the soles of the feet down, you could then rock back on the heels to raise your toes and do the counter stretch as well.

Another way to increase strength waiting for the kettle is to do a chair pose. This one is best done with flat feet (no high heels) but feet are hip distance apart, bend at the knee and ‘sit’ into a chair (but the chair is not there). Imaging you were about to sit down then I pressed ‘pause’. Hold this position for a few breaths - your body weight is in the heels. Your arms can reach overhead. Position your arms alongside your ears and for extra core work, lean the torso slightly forward and hold.

If you are somewhere that it’s not possible to move in this way - public transport for example, then you can devote two minutes to a mindfulness practice. If it is safe to do so, adopt a soft gaze and focus your awareness on your breath. Observe your inhale through the nose, peak at the top, then steady exhale through the nose. Notice the natural rhythm of your breath, notice where into the body you tend to breathe into (belly or chest for example). See if you can detect the temperature of the air as it comes in though the nostril. Then, does it feel any different on the way out? Taking a mindful moment in this way helps bring you into the present. If you are in a situation where you feel stressed, heart racing, mind goes blank, then

Yorkshire BusinessWoman 91

use your breath as your guide to bring you back into your power. Actively focus on slowing down your breath and lengthening the inhales. Allow yourself the space you need to bring your emotions back under control, and when you feel calmer, sending loving kindness toward yourself. You did it - you dealt with what needed dealing with, you rode the wave of emotion, and you came back on the other side, without losing your cool. Well done!!

I have 5 minutes at my desk!

If you are desk bound or have

limited mobility, you can enjoy yoga from your chair. With 5 minutes between phone calls, you could notice a stiff back or neck. Let’s start with some seated catcow poses. These are classic yoga poses that you may do in a class on all fours, hands, and knees, but we can adapt for a chair. Sit with a tall spine and clasp your hands in front of your chest with arms extended then inhale as you gaze to the ceiling and push your navel forwards into ‘cow’. On the exhale, tuck chin into chest as you push through the spine, making the back rounded in shape, like

a cat stretching. Repeat several times, matching movement to breath as you flex and extend your spine.

Another seated stretch that is great at the end of the day if you are feeling tension across the shoulders and neck is to sit with your back straight and bring your shoulders up to the ears, then move them back, then move them down. When they are in the down position, squeeze the shoulder blades together behind your back - as if they are trying to kiss. This opens out your check and

YorkshireBusinessWoman 92

mobilises your upper body. You can reverse each of these positions to bring your shoulders back into the starting position and then do some shoulder rolls, circling clockwise then anticlockwise. After this, check you are still sat tall and allow your right ear to drop towards your right shoulder. Feel that stretch in the left side of the neck then bring the head back to centre and drop the left ear to the left shoulder. It could feel nice to bring the chin to chest and stretch the back of the neck, then raise your gaze to the sky and lengthen the neck. Move slowly and don’t force anything. Your skull weighs enough on its own to create the stretch you need, it’s not necessary to press with the hands.

Finally, a chair twist is always a nice one after you have been hunched over a desk. Sat with a tall spine and your feet on the ground, take an inhale and on the exhale, place your left hand onto the outside of your right knee whilst the right hand either reaches backwards or you can place the right palm onto the lower back and twist. Inhale as you release the twist and, on the exhale, the right hand is placed on the outside of the left knee as the left hand reaches back or left palm goes onto the lower back and twist. Do a few on each side until your muscles feel more ease. This pose is great for detoxing - be sure to drink lots of water to help the process as well!

I have 10 minutes - hooray!

With a bit longer you can do all the above and create a flow - moving from one exercise to the next. If you can unroll a mat, you can add

in a downward dog for a great allround stretch or a plank for a core strengthener. For both, get into the forward fold position (sway like a rag doll!) then bend the knees to get the hands onto the mat and walk the hands ahead of you to bring you into downward dog with the weight evenly balanced across hands and feet. For plank, simply shift the body weight forwards, as the hips lower and your shoulders are directly over the wrists, tighten the core and breathe. You always have an option to put your knees down if you need.

I have an hour but don’t know how to fill it!

That’s amazing - one hour to yourself can dramatically improve your fitness, strength, focus and flexibility as well as calming the mind. In one hour, you can do a full length yoga class with postures to calm you and challenge you. Build strength and serenity. Find flexibility and freedom.

For busy women everywhere, I created a digital yoga subscription called Empowerment Yoga. https://nadinehill.co.uk/ product/empowerment-yoga/ This is because my classes contain empowering prompts, affirmations, and a meditative relaxation at the end, ideal to help you shift your state from wherever you are in any moment, to a more empowered one after a class. Yoga is a game changer, practice it enough and you’ll start to believe that you can do anything, you’ll find your power, your voice, your inner wise woman. She’s right there, just waiting to be honoured with your presence. Out of 168 hours a week, just one for yourself doesn’t seem like that much, does it?

I’m always on the move!

If you have zero pockets of time within your week to devote to exercise, absolutely none. Nada. Then you can still find fitness, but you will have to be creative!

• Always take the stairs (the lift is quicker but it’s doing your body no favours). Just keep a wet wipe or deodorant in your bag for easy freshen ups.

• At the supermarket pick up your shopping bags evenly on both sides (weight distributed between left and right) and bend from the knees to grab the bags. Don’t round the spine. Before you put the bags on the counter, you could do a few bicep curls holding the bags.

• Walk and talk. If you have calls to make you don’t have to be sat at your desk to do them. Take a walk around the block and make the call. Every step counts.

• Take a stand! Schedule a reminder on your phone at regular intervals to stand at your desk for a few minutes whilst you are on a call, tidying your workspace or talking to a colleague. Even a few moments on your feet are better than 8 hours or more a day sat down, so if it is available to you - if you are physically able to stand, then do it.

Whatever you manage to do during the day, at the end of the day before you get into bed, stand tall and inhale your arms over head sweeping from the sides. Palms touch at the top then exhale your hands to heart centre. Namaste.

British farmer urges shoppers to look closer to home for olive oil alternatives

As olive oil prices are set to hit an all-time high, with some premium brands due to top £16 a litre this summer, British farmers are encouraging UK consumers to look closer to home for an alternative extra virgin cooking oil.

The Guardian reported this month that olive oil prices are set to climb further this year, backed up by data from the International Olive Council that just under 2.3m tonnes of olives are expected to be produced globally this year, down from the 2.5m produced in 2023 and well below the 3.4m in 2022.

So, what alternatives do the UK farmers have to offer to UK consumers facing sky high olive oil prices?

Adam Palmer, farmer and MD of extra virgin rapeseed oil brand littleseed thinks now is the time for consumers to wake up and reap the benefits of the high-quality cooking oils being produced here in the UK.

He says, "There is no better time for consumers to start looking beyond the wall of olive oils they find in almost every supermarket and try extra virgin or cold pressed rapeseed oil."

How does cold pressed rapeseed oil compare to extra virgin olive oil?

Currently 1 litre of Filipo Berio extra virgin olive oil* retails at £13.85 per litre, whereas the equivalent volume of littleseed extra virgin British rapeseed oil* is £7.50 per litre. *Prices correct May 2024

Extra virgin olive oil typically has a fruity, and sometimes peppery flavour. The flavour varies depending on the variety of olives used to make it and the region it is produced in.

Cold pressed rapeseed oil has a mild and nutty flavour compared to olive oil.

British producers of rapeseed need to come together to promote the high-quality cooking oil that is produced here on British farms...

Its mellow flavour means it is ideal for a wide variety of different cooking and baking applications because it works well as vehicle for the other flavours in a recipe.

Extra virgin and cold pressed oils are produced in the same way. The olive fruits or rapeseeds are passed through a mechanical press which quite literally presses the oil out of them. Only the oil from first pressing is bottled and no heat or chemicals are used during the

manufacturing process which means all the natural goodness remains.

The smoke or burn point of an oil is the temperature at which it begins to decompose and start to release unpleasant chemicals.

The smoke point of extra virgin olive oil is around 320°F to 375°F (160°C to 190°C).

In comparison the smoke point of cold pressed rapeseed oil is much higher at around 400°F to 450°F (200°C to 240°C).

Extra virgin olive oil is ideal for using for dressing and drizzling because of its unique and distinct flavour. However, due its relatively low smoke point, it is not recommended for cooking with at higher temperatures.

Cold pressed rapeseed oil is ideal for using cold as a dressing, as well as baking, roasting and frying. Cold pressed rapeseed oil's higher smoke point is the key to its versatility because the oil does not start to break down until it reaches a much higher temperature than olive oil.

Cold pressed rapeseed oil contains around half the saturated fat of olive oil. 7% for cold pressed rapeseed oil and 15% for extra virgin olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil is known for its high content of monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid, which is associated with numerous health benefits such as heart health and antiinflammatory properties. It also contains antioxidants like vitamin E and phenolic compounds.

Similar to olive oil, cold pressed rapeseed oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid. Additionally, it contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in a balanced ratio, making it

beneficial for heart health. It's also a good source of vitamin E and antioxidants.

Rapeseed is widely grown here in the UK and well suited to the UK climate. Look out for British on the label and you can be sure that your bottle of oil won't have travelled far to your kitchen. Most of the olive oil is grown and produced in Europe, however due to the poor harvest, olive oil market leader Filippo Berio have reported they would be bringing in oil from South America for the second year in a row to support production. All olive oil must be imported to the UK. Therefore, racking up more food miles that British grown rapeseed oil.

Adam who has been growing, pressing, and bottling cold pressed rapeseed oil on his Yorkshire farm for 16 years believes that the British producers of rapeseed need to come together to promote the high-quality cooking oil that is produced here on British farms.

Feeling increasingly frustrated by recent press coverage Adam says, "I read an article in a well-known British newspaper just this week that was suggesting other cooking oils that consumers could try as an alternative to extra virgin olive oil, and I couldn't believe how poorly researched it was.

In the line-up of products featured there was not a single bottle of cold pressed British rapeseed oil despite the fact it is produced in the same way as extra virgin olive oil, being rich in vitamin E, a good source of Omega 3, low in saturated fat, and great value for money.

"As producers and farmers, we absolutely need to shout louder, but we need the support of the British press, health professionals and chefs to bring attention to the high quality, nutritionally rich cooking oils being made here in the UK."

MINI Countryman goes MAXI

During the course of 2024 the entire MINI range will be updated. There will be new models in the shape of a new MINI Cooper, a brand new model in the all-electric MINI Aceman and, first up, the MINI Countryman.

The first thing you notice is that the new Countryman is big. This is a proper SUV with room for five adults.

You can choose from 3 petrol engine options or two fully electric versions

of the 3rd generation Countryman. The 1.5 litre model we tested has recently gone on sale starting at £29,335 (May ’24).

Under the bonnet you’ll find a 1.5 litre 168bhp 3-cylinder engine which

gives you a 0-60 time of 8.3 seconds. Top speed is 130mph. Power goes to the front wheels via a 7-speed auto ‘box. In terms of fuel economy MINI reckon you’ll get close to 48mpg, which is pretty good going bearing in mind that this is quite a large car. A pair of 2.0 litre Countryman (should that be Countrymen?) all-wheel drive models are also available….the Countryman S ALL4 with a 215bhp engine and the John Cooper Works

YorkshireBusinessWoman 96

version which gets a 296bhp high performance unit.

If you want to go all-electric you

can choose from a 201bhp MINI Countryman E which comes with front wheel drive, or a 309bhp twin engine, 4x4 SE ALL4 version

which tops the range at £47,180 (May ‘24).

In terms of trim, MINI keeps things simple with 3 options…Classic, Exclusive and Sport…available across the entire Countryman range.

In typical MINI fashion, the interior is dominated by the large, (think medium size pizza), 24cm circular infotainment system which controls just about everything. It looks good but, as with a lot of these systems, there can be a lot of finger prodding to get something simple like the right cabin temperature. It also acts as the speedo, but we’d recommend the optional head-up display so that you don’t need to take your eyes off the road.

In terms of kit, the Classic trim gets you goodies like sat nav, DAB radio, LED front and rear lighting, Core, Green and Go-kart driver modes, air con, loads of safety aids, parking sensors, rear-view camera, powered hatch, Apple Car Play & Android Auto integration, and powered mirrors.

If you like the look of the Countryman with skid plates and side sills (we do), then it might be worth going for the Exclusive trim (£2,700) which also chucks in Sports front seats and 19inch alloys.

However, beware. It’s very tempting to head into the option packs. This can change what looks like a decently priced, quality car into something which can become downright expensive. Do your homework.

Yes this latest Countryman is big enough to make you wonder whether calling it a MINI really fits, but the bottom line is that it’s good to drive, has a premium look and feel, comes with the essentials as standard and should hold onto its value really well. It can’t fail.
