Taking & Your Husband's Name? Mr. Mrs. W

omen do not automatically change their last name once they get married. In fact, more professional young women are keeping their maiden name. The main reason for opting out of a name change stems from their professional life. Because women are waiting longer to get married, many of them have worked hard to establish a “name” for themselves and do not want to lose that identity once they get married.

Whether you choose to take your husband to be’s last name or not can be a heated topic, so approach it carefully. Consider all the pros and cons of the change. One of the biggest reasons brides take his last name has to do with children. Women do not want to feel like their family is split having different names as their children. In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s there was a rise in the number of women hyphenating their last name. However in recent years this trend has seemed to lose some steam. Some women who may be the last of the family lineage opt to keep their father's last name to carry on the name of the family. In these cases, it is not uncommon to see the children also named after the bride’s last name. Changing your last name may be a lot of work to file all the papers and change all your accounts, but in the end each bride must decide if changing her last name is right for her.

Administration at (800) 772-1213. An automated system will talk you through the name change process. Or just head down to the local office and file paperwork there.

• Driver’s License: Visit the Department of Motor Vehicles, which requires you to make a personal appearance. You will need your new social security card or your certified marriage license. • Fill in the Blanks: Once you have a social security card and driver's license in your married name, other changes should be fairly easy. Some institutions only require a phone call; others may ask for a copy of your marriage certificate or social security card. Be sure to notify: employers, post office, phone company and other utilities, banks/financial institutions, credit card companies, voter registration, schools and alumni associations.

• Don't forget about theses important documents

as well: mortgage or lease, will, insurance policies, financial advisors and passport (Do not do change your passport before the wedding. Your passport name must match the name on your ticket and all other travel documents! It's easier to take your honeymoon with your maiden name.) ❤

If you decide to take your new hubby’s name , you must make it official. Contrary to popular belief, obtaining a marriage license that uses your new last name does not mean you've changed it. Start with your Social Security card and driver's license so that the rest are easy to change. Here's a list of the basic steps to solidify your new name.

• Get Proof: Get your certified marriage license; be sure it has a raised seal to prove it's authentic. Call the office where your license was filed to get copies if they are not automatically mailed.

Cutting Your Wedding Guest List W

hen it comes to weddings, there is one thing that will almost always present difficult, frustrating, or downright awkward situations – The Guest List. Since it’s impossible to please everyone, finalizing your guest list may feel like an impossible task. In theory, “the more the merrier” would be great for a wedding… But, unfortunately, there’s such a thing as the bill. So, if you’d rather not host an extremely expensive event, not everyone will be able to attend. Eventually you’ll have to make some cuts, and when that time comes, here are a few things to consider.

1. Are you issuing the invitation out of obligation? Just

because someone invited you to their wedding does not mean you are required to invite them to yours.

2. Would you spend a great deal of money on this person

and/or want to spend that much time with them?

3. If you no longer speak to this person in 15 years,

would you look back on your wedding day and think “I’m really glad they were there for my wedding?” If you wouldn’t feel this way, chances are they’re not that important to your big day.

4. Are you inviting this person because you really

want them to attend, or just because other guests want them there? Couples will often invite friends

of friends to their weddings when they are not close to them. Just because their presence may make some of your friends happy is not enough of a reason to invite them. The day is about YOU and if you’re already not that close, could not inviting them really make it worse?

5. Would you care if they didn’t show up? If you don’t think you would notice or mind if they didn’t attend, don’t invite them!

6. And when it all comes down to it, is your wedding (one of the most important days of your life) really something you feel the need to share with this person?

Make sure to really consider these points when deciding who will attend your big day. And when it comes to delivering the news, an honest answer is best – “We would love to invite everyone, but we had to make cuts to our list.” This is always better than using a line like “It’s just family and close friends” or “We’re having a small wedding.” These statements can be hurtful if the person finds out they were not the truth. Just remember that your wedding is about you, and some people will simply have to accept that. Good luck and happy cutting! ❤

urchasing wedding insurance is not a sign that you have cold feet. Instead it could be a sensible investment to protect the details you have planned since childhood. The insurance will cover some or all of the fees if your wedding venue closes, a vendor cancels or bad weather hits, depending on the coverage you choose. Before purchasing insurance, be sure to check to see if your ceremony and reception site is insured and if your wedding vendors are already well covered. Wedding insurance may also include sickness or injury to the bride, groom or anyone essential to the wedding. Depending on the policy, wedding insurance could pay for postponing your wedding including those non-refundable deposits. Wedding liability insurance might be a wise investment, if your wedding party tends to be a little wild. From broken tables and damaged carpet

to smashed DJ equipment, you will pay if your guests caused the damage. Whether you have insurance or not, read your contracts carefully and walk through the event before it is decorated. Make a note (and camera phone photos) of any damage. Liability insurance will pay for any damage caused by your wedding reception. Insurance can be expensive, but so is your wedding. There is a balance between the cost and the return that is different for each bride. It costs you nothing to price out insurance policies. Contact your favorite insurance agent and do independent research. Together, with your fiancĂŠ and your parents (if they are paying), you can decide if there is a policy that is right for your wedding. Just remember, wedding insurance will not cover cold feet or a change of heart. â?¤

Vendor Information Questions to ask all vendors you hire for your wedding, big or small! ❤ Do you have liability insurance? ❤ Is there a deposit due and when? ❤ When is the balance due? ❤ What is the cancellation policy? ❤ Do you accept credit cards? ❤ How do you handle unforeseen issues? ❤ Do you have a backup plan if something goes wrong on our wedding day?

General Vendor Hiring Hints ❤ Ask friends and family to recommend service providers and venues that were satisfactory. ❤ Talk to your friends who were recently married. They are an excellent source of knowledge. ❤ The first question to ask potential service providers: Do you have my date open? This will save you time and energy if they do not. ❤ Meet with several vendors in each category before you hire any particular one, even if you really loved the first one you met. ❤ Be sure to conduct an interview with a potential vendor, regardless if you have several great referrals for him or her. Your personalities might clash, indicating a wrong fit for you. ❤ Ask for a tour, samples, demos, previews, pictures and referrals from all your vendors before they are hired. Don’t just take their word for it. ❤ Once you find a vendor you want… don’t wait, book them!

General Contract Guidelines ❤ Look over the entire contract. If you don’t understand something, ask them! If you have an

attorney, you may want them to review the larger contracts. ❤ Make sure your contracts all have the date, time, location and a detailed description of all services and items to be provided by the vendor. ❤ Make sure the contract includes ALL fees and how they apply: late fees, overtime charges, gratuities, open-ended charges, etc. Also make sure they include times, if time sensitive, and try to put a cap on prices if they could get out of control. ❤ Contracts must stipulate the deposit amount, due date and all payments and amounts due. ❤ Do not sign if you do not agree with any part of the contract. Instead, negotiate the details and have a new contract drafted that you feel comfortable signing. ❤ Make sure you get a copy of the contract before you leave with both signatures and the date singed.

Set up a consultation with the person styling your hair several months before your wedding. Ask your stylist what they recommend for treatments that add strength and/or shine for the wedding day, such as protein treatments so your hair can hold curl all day. If you want softness or shine, a moisture treatment might be recommended. Consider the overall look and feel you are going for when deciding on your hair and makeup. They should match the tone of the wedding; romantic, trendy, natural or formal. Always bring a photo of your gown to your consultation. This will allow the stylist to compliment the style of your dress. Believe it or not, your hair can accentuate or make your gown look out of place! Smooth textured gowns call for a soft smooth hair style; while more romantic dresses with lace go better with medium texture and soft movement.

The trend for specialty styling seems to be wearing hair down to show off the length, texture and health of your hair. Smokey eyes are not just a nighttime look anymore. With this universal look, it doesn’t matter what skin tone or eye color you have, there’s a smokey look for everyone. So here are a few tips to achieve the perfect smokey eye on your wedding day:

1. Prepare the lid

The key to keeping eyeshadow from melting into your eyelid crease as the day goes on is to keep eyelids oil-free. To do this, start with an eyeshadow base or primer. Swipe it across the eye and let it dry before you continue to the next step.

2. Apply eyeliner

If you’re going for a typical black, brown or gray smoky eye, apply liner in one of those colors above the upper lash line, drawing the line thicker in the middle of eye. If you’re opting for a jewel-toned eye, line eyes with a purple, blue or deep green eye liner.

3. Blend in color on bottom lashes

For color on the bottom of your eyes, use an eyeliner pencil, because they’re easiest to smudge. Once the line is drawn, run your finger over it to smudge the line. You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect.

4. Apply light base color

Sweep a light, shimmery shadow over the lids to your brow bone.

5. Blend the darker color

Be sure to keep the dark color below the crease. Using an eyeshadow brush, blend in color starting at your lash line, blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop the deep color your at crease. The key here is to blend, blend, blend!

6. Double-check your work

Make sure both eyes match, and blend the colors with a Q-tip if needed.

7. Top it off with mascara

For the busy bride, the process of planning and organizing every wedding detail can make staying fit and healthy seem impossible. If you are having trouble getting motivated, or if you’re just not getting the results you’d like, try these simple health and fitness tips. Along with the proper exercise and diet, they’ll jump start your wedding weight loss before you know it. However, it is important to remember that weight loss not only takes time, but patience too. So start dieting and exercising months before your wedding to ensure healthy, stable results!

Set Smart Goals – Make

sure your goals are specific, measurable, and realistic. Having a structured weight loss plan will keep you much more consistent, but don’t aim for unrealistic goals. Trying to lose too much weight too quickly can also be a health hazard if your body is not able to get its essential nutrients.

Get Good Peer Pressure – Friends are crucial

during this time and can make or break your fitness plan. Make sure that they are supportive of your goals and recruit a few pals to take on the challenge with you. Bridal BOOT CAMP O

nce you find the dress of your dreams, be sure you put forth the effort necessary to ensure you will look your very best in it. You will want to focus on and play up the assets that your dress will show off. In addition to your regular healthy diet and cardio program, try adding these specific exercises to your regimen. Each exercise should be done 3 times a week in sets of 10 reps and 4 sets per day.

Halter, strapless and open back dresses will feature your upper back. Tone those muscles including lats, traps, rhomboids and deltoids by trying the dumbbell raise. Grasp the dumbbells with your arms in front of you, palms facing your body. Slowly raise the dumbbells up until your arms are straight out in front of your chin. Lower slowly and repeat. (Fig. 1) Gowns with straps or plunging or sweetheart necklines will draw attention to your chest. Those muscles include your pecs and deltoids. Try doing a dumbbell chest press. Lie flat on the floor with your arms forming an “L” shape. Extend arms upward until arms are straight over your head and elbows are straight. Then lower using a controlled motion. (Fig. 2) Spaghetti straps, halter and strapless dresses all feature the arms and shoulders, including your biceps and triceps. The dumbbell shoulder raise will allow you to tone those areas. (Fig. 3) Hold the dumbbells with your arms bent at a 90 degree angle and palms facing your body. Lift your arms over your head until fully extended. Lower and raise again. Form-fitted, sheath, column, hourglass, mermaid and trumpet style dresses cling to the body, emphasizing the belly, butt and thighs. Your abs, obliques, quads, glutes and hamstrings are the focal points. (Fig. 4) The dumbbell lunge can work most of those areas. Holding the dumbbells straight at your sides, take a large step forward. Keep the back leg straight and bend the front leg as you descend as far as you can. Then step forward with the back foot now making this the front bent leg. For more exercise options, be sure to enlist the help of your local gym trainer and fitness experts. Here are a few tips to writing thank you notes that are appropriate and appreciative. Timing is everything! - Don’t wait too long to send the thank you note! You should be writing thank you notes within the same month as the wedding. For gifts you received at other times like your bridal shower, you should send a note within two weeks. Electronic thank you’s are not appropriate NEVER send an email or a text saying thank you for your wedding gifts. All of your thank you’s need to be hand written and personalized. The reader needs to know the note was intended just for them. Be creative with your stationery - You may want to choose stationery that went along with the

theme of your wedding. Use your wedding colors to re-create your wedding in your thank you notes. Don’t be afraid to use colored envelopes either! Do not specify dollar amounts - If you received money from some of your guests don’t ever put the amount in the card. Simply say the thank you for their gift and also mention what you plan on doing with it. Rehearsal Made Easy! H

ere are a few tips to prepare you for your wedding ceremony rehearsal:

Start the rehearsal by lining the wedding party up where they will stand at the altar for the ceremony. • You can place markers on the floor so that everyone can find their exact point during the ceremony. Next, practice the recessional. • The bride and groom will leave first followed by the maid of honor with the best man, then the bridesmaids with the groomsmen. The parents of the bride exit immediately after the bridal party followed by the groom's parents. Make sure to keep everyone in line so you can come back in to practice the processional.

Finally, the bride walks down the aisle! • When the bride nears the front of the altar, the groom may take several steps toward her and offer his arm to escort her the rest of the way. • The bride’s escort will then be seated. The officiant will then run through the order of the ceremony followed by the recessional. Tip: To enhance your ceremony, go against the norm and switch the guest sides so the bride’s friends and family are seated opposite her, and vice versa with the groom’s side. This allows everyone to see the face of his or her loved one throughout the ceremony! ❤

Run though the processional. • The immediate family members are seated before the processional. First, the groom’s grandparents enter, followed by the bride’s grandparents, groom’s parents, and the bride’s mother. The groom would typically be at the front of the church before the seating of family members begins. • Next, the bridal party will walk down the aisle. It’s up to you to decide the order that your bridal party will be in. You can have the bridesmaids walk down the aisle first, followed by the groomsmen, or the party walking as couples. • Have everyone spaced at least 20 feet away from the next person, and remind them to walk slowly!

Transportation S

izes of wedding parties continue to grow. This creates an increasing demand for transportation that can handle these types of numbers making limo buses extremely popular. As the size of bridal parties continues to grow, so does the size of the limo bus. It is not uncommon to rent a vehicle that holds 20-30 people or possibly even more. Tom Olson from Stellar Limousine in Sioux Falls points out there are multiple uses for different vehicles, not just for bridal parties to get from the ceremony to the reception.

Some other uses are using a limo to get from the hotel to the church after the bridal party gets ready. It is also not uncommon for the bride and groom to send a car to bring parents, grandparents and other special guests to the church and reception. The wedding day is just as important to them as it is to the couple so why not make it special for them as well. Another popular use for a limo bus is for a “safe ride” program for guests to get to and from the hotel and reception site. Alcohol is often a big part of the reception celebration, and it is a nice perk for guests to not have to worry about driving following the reception. After the ceremony, guests staying at the hotel can meet in the lobby and take the shuttle directly to the reception. This “safe ride” shuttle is also great for guests who are from another town and may not be familiar or comfortable driving to the different locations on your wedding day. MORTGAGE MYTHS... THE TRUTH BEHIND THEM Mortgage Myth #1 – You need 20% down to purchase a home. Congratulations if you have a 20% down payment! Having a bigger down payment can make the process of purchasing a home easier, but there are many programs out there for people who have 5% or less to put down. FHA financing only requires 3.5% down, which helps the buyer cover closing costs. Conventional loans require 5% down. If you buy a home three miles outside of Sioux Falls, you may qualify for a Rural Development loan; this program requires no down payment. All these programs have some advantages and disadvantages so make sure to investigate which one is right for you. If you are a first-time home buyer, look into the South Dakota Housing Development First-Time Home Buyer Program. They offer down payment assistance and low rate options. Mortgage Myth #2 – My credit score suffers when I shop for a mortgage. Inquiries into your credit can affect your score. Your credit score can have an impact on which programs you qualify for and what rate you receive. However, if several lenders pull credit within a short period of time, it should not affect your score. If you go to a lender every week for a month or two, then yes, your score may take a hit. If you are going to shop for a mortgage, do it by applying at all the lenders in the same week, if possible, to avoid issues that can affect your qualifying rate and terms. Mortgage Myth #3 – A 30-Year Fixed Rate Mortgage is the way to go. Rates on fixed rate loans are historically low. But the consumer has many options including 10year, 15-year, 20-year or even a 25-year fixed rate loan. Rates usually improve the shorter the term

of the loan. Also, Adjustable Rate Mortgages are at historic lows as well and for the right situation, can save the borrower thousands in interest. Talking to a mortgage lender will help you determine what loan structure fits your financial needs.

Mortgage Myth #4 – I will have mortgage insurance on my loan forever. If you have a loan that requires mortgage insurance, it will eventually fall off. For example, FHA loans drop the insurance when your loan balance reaches 78% of the original value of the home at the time of financing. Conventional loans will also remove your mortgage insurance at the 78% mark. You can always request it be removed early if you think your home has appreciated enough, but might have to do an appraisal to support the value. Mortgage insurance is a great tool to help you get in to a home, but it won’t be required forever. Under some circumstances, it's even tax deductible.

While it is true that state income programs have disappeared, people who make their payments and can show their income, can and will get a loan. Some programs have increased their minimum credit score requirements to 620 or higher. If your credit score is under that, start working on it now! One or two 30-day late payments will not normally affect your approval but it may affect the interest rate you qualify for. When you go to the appointment with your mortgage lender, bring your most recent two years of income tax returns, current pay stubs and current bank statements. If you have all the supporting documentation, your lender should be able to tell you what you are approved for that same day, or shortly thereafter.
