Foundation Launches Alexander Black House Capital Campaign The Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation, a 501-c-3
non-profit organization, launched a $1.5 million capital campaign in March to restore the Alexander Black House. To date, the organization has raised over $280,000. The Town of Blacksburg, following a successful community fund raising effort, will contribute an additional $1 million making the restoration of the Black House a true public/private partnership. In 2002, the Town purchased the Alexander Black House, which had served for more than 50 years as the McCoy Funeral home. The house was moved to a knoll on Draper Road making way for the construction of Kent Square. Presently, the Black House sits at the edge of the historic Sixteen Squares, alongside the beautiful Georgian-style Thomas Conner House and one block from the PhillipsRonald House, (Five Chimneys), both owned by the Town of Blacksburg. The original 1897 Alexander Black House was built by a fourth-generation descendant of the Black family for whom the Town is named. Alexander Black, a prominent businessman and founder of the National Bank of Blacksburg, lived in the home with his wife Lizzie and their adopted daughter Mary until his death in 1935. Blacksburg Mayor Ron Rordam calls the house a true icon of Blacksburg’s history. “It is a prime example of Victorian style, and in a sense, the building is art itself,” said Rordam. The restored Alexander Black House and Cultural Center will feature restored period-appropriate rooms, a research library, exhibits of art and history, cultural programs and workshops, and modern amenities for indoor and outdoor special events. Jim Rakes, President of the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation said, “There is a renewed interest in the historical and cultural past and present of our community. This is the perfect time to demonstrate the connection between the Alexander Black House, the arts initiatives, and the ongoing downtown revitalization efforts. This building is a community treasure and a grand centerpiece of our downtown.” The Alexander Black House and Cultural Center will serve as a community center and focal point in downtown, and will appeal to residents and visitors of all (Continued on next page)

generations. It will also house the permanent offices of the Blacksburg Museum which has been in operation since 2002. The Town of Blacksburg opened its first museum facility in 2009 with the completion of St. Luke and Odd Fellows Hall, a museum of African American culture. The Richmond-based architectural firm Glavé and Holmes has begun the restoration planning process. The firm has a great deal of experience with historic sites, including such places as Montpelier, the Jamestown Settlement, and the Virginia Historical Society. The capital campaign is expected to be completed this fall, and construction will begin soon after. Restoration work is expected to take 16 to 18 months, paving the way for a potential opening in Spring 2013. To learn more about this project, volunteer, or make a contribution to the capital campaign visit www.blacksburghistory.org, or become a Facebook friend of the Alexander Black House and Cultural Center.
Steppin’ Out in Downtown Blacksburg For 31 years, the Steppin’ Out Street Festival hosted by Downtown Blacksburg,
Inc. (DBI) has turned downtown Blacksburg into a showcase of fun, community, and creativity. On August 5th and 6th from 10 am – 10 pm, more than 185 artists from around the country will offer jewelry, pottery, textiles, metal work, art, wood crafts and more. Festival goers can enjoy an eclectic variety of music and entertainment featured on three stages along with a wide array of children’s activities. Fantasy face-painting, inflatable bouncers, Smokey the Bear and Sparky will delight the young and the young at heart. Be prepared to “hoop it up” or put on your dancing shoes – the bands at Steppin’ Out always get you moving. The festival, for many, is an annual reunion. “Steppin’ Out is like coming home for the Blacksburg community, a time to reconnect with friends and family after a summer apart,” says Laureen Blakemore, Special Events Director for Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. For those looking to get more involved in the community, be sure to stop by and visit with the many organizations serving the New River Valley in the Community Connection area. And then there’s the food! Some of Blacksburg’s finest downtown restaurants will be out in the festival area offering up great tastes and free smells. Bring your family and friends, but please, don’t bring your pets. Steppin’ Out gets crowded, so for their safety and the safety of those attending, dogs are not allowed in the festival area unless they’re on the way to and from the Canine Coral on Henderson Lawn. Creating a Community of Chefs Feeling a bit inadequate in the kitchen? Looking for a new job skill? Check out two new programs offered by Blacksburg Parks and Recreation: Cooking with Confidence seminars and Restaurant Cooking and Preparation ABC’s taught by local chef Ed McClain. A former chef at Poor Billy’s and Cabo Fish Taco, Ed’s passion for cooking has led him to offer these courses as a way to create a community of chefs; chefs who will want Chef Ed McClain to share tips and tricks; chefs who will want to host dinner parties with their classmates. This is not another “watch me cook” course; it’s an opportunity to learn professional culinary techniques, adapted to the typical home kitchen, in a sharing and comfortable environment. “I want to give people the confidence they need to take the stress out of cooking,” said McClain. “Class participants will learn to tune out the distractions, like the spouse or the children, so they can get in a zone and enjoy what they are doing.” The Cooking with Confidence seminars are offered on Monday evenings and topics include: breakfast, lunch, dinner, sushi, healthy choice, fish, and seafood. The classes are for ages 16 and older and will be held at the Blacksburg Community Center. Restaurant Cooking and Preparation ABC’s has a special place in McClain’s heart. He sees it as a community outreach program that could give troubled teens or those looking for work skills a jumpstart in the restaurant industry. “This class teaches essential skills such as preparing and handling food, knife techniques, speed, safety, and attention to detail. I hope, in some way, to help participants get local restaurant jobs that can be turned into careers,” said McClain. To register for these programs, please visit page 43.

CREATIVE WRITING CAMP This class will focus on narrative writing. Students will be introduced to the elements of narrative writing through the reading of short stories. Students will then work through the stages of the writing process, (prewriting, rough draft, re-read, share with a peer reviser, revise, editing, final draft, and publishing), in order to compose their own narrative piece. We Be PieRATE-JUNEBUG SUMMER THEATER Join the crew and learn why the mischievous pie rats become the first rats in history to force the pirates to abandon ship. This silly but exciting tale tells of pie rats, pirates, and townspeople in a one act singing and dancing play that caps a week of KIDSTOCK camp. The Camp features great costumes and lots of pirate stuff to delight your child. Performance Friday, 7pm.
