or some people, dogs are like their
children and like many children, sometimes they just don’t listen. But dogs are at a disadvantage, they don’t speak human and may not understand common commands. This is when the Dog Clicker Communication Class offered by Blacksburg Parks and Recreation comes in handy. Instructor Anne Gouiller-Moore is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and also teaches the Dog Under Control Class. She’s been teaching the clicker method for five years. “Our dogs don’t come to us speaking English and we do not speak dog, so the clicker is a great way to communicate. You could say the clicker is the interpreter between animal and human,” says GouillerMoore. Using a clicker is a positive method to train dogs. The clicker is used to show the dog that his behavior is correct. For example, let’s say you have a puppy in front of you and as soon as he sits on his own, you would click and then give him a reward. All of this is done without saying a word. After a while when you see the puppy trying to sit again, you would say “sit” right when he is about to sit, then when he sits, you click.
The clicker method has been used for years on zoo animals. The zookeepers are able to draw blood, file nails, and more, on all kind of animals. With many of the animals, it’s a soft whistle instead of the hand clicker that’s used. The clicker makes the dogs think, which is another way they can use their energy instead of running around. Dogs trained with this method create a strong bond with their owners. Anyone who wants to work with their dog can benefit from this class. It helps reinforce the commands they know, learn new ones, and learn tricks. Even old dogs can learn new tricks; dogs trained the old fashion way can be retrained with a clicker. Don’t worry about the clicker becoming a training crutch; it’s simply a command interpreter. Once a word is associated with a command and the dog performs that command 100% of the time, then the clicker will no longer be used. Clicker training is a safe and effective way to modify and shape behavior of animals, but the training has to be fun for both the owner and the dog. Consider signing up for the Dog Clicker Communication Class and enjoy the new bond with your pup! Registration information can be found on page 31.

ith the roundabout on North Main Street taking shape, it’s hard to believe that the Main Street Improvement project is ahead of schedule just a little more than a year after it began. Originally scheduled for completion in spring 2012, good weather and favorable conditions have moved the project ahead quickly. In October, the roundabout will be opened with only minor construction projects and clean up to be finished. “We’ve received daily compliments from citizens about the way the project has turned out,” said Town Manager Marc Verniel. “The project achieves the goals of creating a safe, inviting pedestrian environment while extending the footprint of downtown up to Prices Fork Road.” Some of the obvious improvements you’ll notice while traveling through downtown are steady traffic flow, 10-foot-wide sidewalks for easy pedestrian movement, and outdoor dining in places such as the Cellar which add to Blacksburg’s “sit and stay a while” feel. In addition to the beautiful brick sidewalks, flower planters and other streetscape features, such as an outdoor seating area just across from Alumni Mall, creates an ideal gathering spot. The existing traffic signals at the

College Avenue and Turner Street intersections have been replaced and a new signal installed at the Alumni Mall intersection, creating a safer scenario for pedestrian crossings and allowing traffic to turn left on to Main Street. The last piece of the project is the two lane roundabout at the intersection of North Main Street and Prices Fork Road. While the idea of navigating a roundabout can be intimidating, it’s actually a safer and more cost effective method of travel according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. When using the roundabout keep these helpful tips in mind: • Always yield to vehicles in the roundabout. • Always yield to pedestrians who may be crossing the road on your approach to the roundabout. • Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are often very hard to see, so be watchful. • Buses and trucks may need more than one lane to enter or leave a roundabout. Not sure how to drive in a roundabout? Learn how at www. blacksburg.gov/mainstreet. Now go out there and enjoy all that downtown Blacksburg has to offer!

Town with an artsy flair, but in recent years, the vision of Blacksburg as an arts destination has really started coming to life. On any given day, the Town’s Sidewalk Stage carries the musical sounds of area artists to the streets; The Lyric Theatre and Squires Recital Salon offer world class performances of music and theater; and on opposite sides of downtown is the construction of Virginia Tech’s new Center for the Arts building and the soon to be restored Alexander Black House and Cultural Center. Amidst this progress is an even simpler, grassroots form of music called the Market Square Jam. At the Market Square Jam on Tuesday evenings, musicians gather together to pick a tune, and enjoy fun times with friends and family. While there folks take in all that downtown Blacksburg has to offer; beautiful green gathering spaces,
timber frame market stalls, comfortable benches where you just might meet your next best friend, old homes rich in history, and a vibe that keeps you coming back. The Jam caters to traditional, old time, blue grass, folk, and blues, but if you’re a musician of a different tune, as long as you’re unplugged, pull up a chair and bring on the jam. “Our hope is that the musicians in the community will embrace the Jam and make it their own,” said Community Relations Manager Heather Browning. “We’re fortunate to have live music in the park on many of our Farmers Market days, and offering it again on Tuesday nights is just another opportunity for us to highlight the great talent in the community.” Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned musician, come on out to the Market Square Jam and play along. Energy Incentives for Homeowners
BLACKSBURG PARKS AND RECREATION – GENERAL INFORMATION
B
eginning this month, the
Community Alliance for Energy Efficiency (cafe2) will reach out to Blacksburg homeowners to help them dramatically improve their homes’ energy performance. Community Housing Partners (CHP) of Christiansburg formed cafe2 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, the Virginia State Energy Office, and the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance. Cafe2 will offer a variety of cash incentives and financing opportunities to homeowners interested in making their homes more energy efficient. Working with the Town of Blacksburg through its Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant award, cafe2 will provide the first 50 qualified homeowners a cash rebate to offset the cost of having a cafe2-approved contractor complete a comprehensive residential energy assessment. Blacksburg homeowners who agree to complete cafe2’s recommended energy efficiency upgrades will be eligible for up to $1500 in rebates for approved work. Additional incentives will also be available. Cafe2 worked with its national partner, the Earth Advantage Institute, to train local energy auditors and contractors including Blacksburg’s Energy Check to conduct their work using the Energy Performance Score (EPS). EPS works like a “miles per gallon” rating for a home and will allow homeowners to evaluate their homes’ energy performance both prior to and upon completion of the selected efficiency upgrades. To be eligible to participate, homeowners must be willing to provide access to their prior 12 months and subsequent 36 months of utility bills, and must agree to have cafe2 provide the required quality assurance review of all work conducted throughout the program. For more information, contact Gregg Lewis, Director at 540-260-3494 or glewis@ cafe2.org.
