ardening is an addiction

for many of us because it’s so forgiving. Every year we get a fresh start, and being the eternal optimists that we are, we quickly forget last year’s disappointments and eagerly pour over stacks of magazines full of promising new plants for the upcoming growing season. For true plant addicts, restraint is a hard thing to come by in the middle of winter. In order to be actively “growing” something, we’ll do things like buy indoor plants, which does absolutely nothing to appease our need to dig in the earth. In order to improve our odds for success for the upcoming growing season, and get outside, here are a few things that you can do while waiting for spring to roll around.

Test your soil and follow up with amendments. This

is one of the most important and most overlooked winter projects out there. Sending a soil sample to your local Virginia Cooperative Extension Office gives you a good baseline to work with when gardening. While there are many things that can be checked the standard analysis of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, and pH will answer a lot of questions about what you need to add to your soil to make your plants perform at their very best. As an added bonus, if you tell them what you’re intending to grow (vegetables, blueberries, turf, etc.), the Virginia Tech soils lab may also make specific suggestions for your particular crop.

KEEP IN TOUCH

Check your growing site for drainage and soil depth. Winter is also a great

that your soil offers. While many plant labels say that the plant prefers a “well drained, deep fertile loam” that may not always describe the soil in your backyard. Amend the soil with compost. Reduce compaction through tilling, aerating, or overturning with a shovel. Sometimes it’s our bad luck to have purchased a home located on a slab of rock or some other unforgiving piece of subsoil. In this case, construction of raised beds or container gardening may be attractive options to consider. Match your growing area with the appropriate plants. Is it full sun or

shady? And even more importantly, does your garden get sun in the early morning or in the afternoon? Finding plants that enjoy the conditions your site already offers is a lot easier than struggling against the site. Look on the internet, call your local extension agent, or consult your local nursery to find plants that will thrive in your garden’s particular conditions. Back to those spring gardening catalogs - Everyone has their favorite

plants they use year after year in their vegetable gardens or flowerbeds. But don’t be afraid to feed your gardening addiction with new varieties which might be more disease resistant, have a better fruit set, or brighter blooms. Combine these well chosen new plants with a little soil preparation, and you’ll have good reason to be optimistic about the upcoming growing season. Happy Gardening! Blacksburg Police to Offer Crime Prevention Classes

Dive into Winter with Blacksburg Parks and Recreation

I

A

n 2012 the Blacksburg Police

Department will begin offering crime prevention classes in an effort to reach out to the citizens of Blacksburg, and teach valuable lessons about crime prevention and personal protection. Refuse to be a Victim

Sponsored by the National Rifle Association January 30, 6-9pm

The single most important step to ensuring personal safety is making the decision not to be a victim. That means you must have an overall personal safety strategy in place before it’s needed. This course teaches proactive strategies for avoiding situations where self-defense may be required. Criminals prefer easy targets; so by making yourself more difficult to prey upon, you lessen your risk of criminal attack. Identity Theft February 27, 6-8pm

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. As many as nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Identity thieves may rent an apartment, obtain a credit card, or establish a telephone account in your name. You may not find out about the theft until you review your credit report or credit card statement and notice charges you didn’t make—or until you’re contacted by a debt collector.

4|

While some identity theft victims can resolve their problems quickly, others spend hundreds of dollars and many days repairing damage to their good name and credit record. Some consumers victimized by identity theft may lose out on job opportunities, or be denied loans for education, housing, or cars, because of negative information on their credit reports. Learn how identities are stolen, and how to avoid becoming a victim. Home Security March 26, 6-8pm

The home security class will train individuals to inspect doors, windows, locks, shrubbery, and other areas of their homes, evaluate their current level of security, and upgrade vulnerable areas. Usually, would-be burglars will look for soft targets and will bypass homes that have good security. These free classes will be held at the Blacksburg Police Department, 200 Clay Street, SW. Space is limited. To register, email Shaylin McNeil at smcneil@blacksburg. gov. For more information about the crime prevention classes or to make recommendations for future programs, contact Lieutenant Steven M. Taylor at (540) 961-1811 or staylor@ blacksburg.gov.

lthough it may be cold outside, that doesn’t mean you have to spend the winter huddled up in your blanket, sipping hot chocolate and watching old movies. Put on some fins or a snow suit and join Blacksburg Parks and Recreation for a new adventure.

Scuba Diving Experience scuba diving for the first time in the comfort of a heated pool at the Blacksburg Aquatic Center. Under the supervision of PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) professionals from Avalon Dive Center, the Discover Scuba program is perfect for the beginner and allows you to experience the excitement of scuba diving in a safe and controlled environment. The program starts off with a short classroom session at the Community Center covering the very basics of equipment, dive signals, equalizing pressure, and water safety. The class continues at the Aquatics Center where you’ll be provided buoyancy control devices, air tanks, face masks, and fins for an hour and a half of fundamentals and fun. Meet new friends as you play underwater Frisbee or toss torpedoes. Whether you’re curious about scuba diving, preparing for a future underwater adventure, or interested in certification, the Discover Scuba program is just the thing to get you started. For details visit page 19. Night Skiing Oh the joy of snow! The feel of the powder hitting your face as you slice up the slopes. The company is good, the slopes are awesome, and you just got an unbelievable deal on lift tickets, rental, and a 90 minute lesson. Even the transportation to Winterplace Ski Resort is included. The only thing that could make the experience better is doing it at night with Blacksburg Parks and Recreation! Night skiing is a great stress reducing activity for after work, school, or a hard day of playing. The lighted slopes give an experienced skier/boarder a whole new perspective while the evening hours means fewer people on the slopes, and more open space for the beginner to learn the ropes. Bring your own gear or rent. Get the scoop on the slopes on page 20.

Town Tackles Graffiti With Mural Project

I

f you’ve been to the Blacksburg Farmers Market recently or walked down Draper Road, there’s a good chance you’ve witnessed art in the making. What started out as an effort to tackle a graffiti problem, has evolved into a wonderful community mural project, thanks to the talents of local artists Michael St. Germain and Chris Pritchett. The Town and local business sponsors worked with the artists to develop a series of designs. In August, St. Germain began painting a mural of Stroubles Creek along a bare wall facing Draper Road, and soon after, Pritchett began painting “Man on the Tractor” behind the Farmers Market. Pritchett’s mural

BLACKSBURG PARKS AND RECREATION – GENERAL INFORMATION includes five panels in total, each focusing on Blacksburg’s rich culture. “My plan is to add four more murals; two on each side of the Market Square Park mural,” said Pritchett. “These will revolve around a theme of important events, people and places in Blacksburg’s history. The next mural to be completed is about the Huckleberry Trail.” Contributions to offset the cost of art supplies and artists’ stipends can be made to the Graffiti Abatement Fund; PO Box 90003, Blacksburg, VA 24062-9003 or by contacting Kim Kirk at kkirk@blacksburg.gov or 540-9514347.
