College Avenue Project To Begin This Summer

D

owntown is about to get

another makeover as construction on the College Avenue Promenade begins this summer. Once complete, the Promenade will create a safe and pleasant pedestrian experience that fosters a sense of community, accommodates a diverse range of people and activities, and upholds Blacksburg’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. By late summer 2013 College Avenue will be a gathering place for exhibitions and performances, as well as larger festivals and community events. It will accommodate the diverse needs of restaurants, retail, and theaters and arts establishments by providing flexible space that can be used for a variety of purposes.

on the Virginia Tech side of College Avenue. Making the street one-way, allows for more flexibility, creating the ability to periodically close College Avenue for pedestrian-only space during special events. The wider sidewalks will allow outdoor dining, and periodic bump-outs will allow public formal and informal gatherings. To create at greater sense of community, between downtown Blacksburg and Virginia Tech, the iron fence will be removed that separates downtown from campus. In place of the fence will be a seatwall, providing a visual and physical connection to campus. The campus gateway area

“The members of Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. are very excited about the prospect of the new College Avenue Promenade and see it as an opportunity for the community to enjoy opportunities for more outside space to connect and commune within the downtown area,” said Laureen Blakemore, Director of Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. Expanding on the pedestrianfriendliness of the North Main Street Improvement Project, the College Avenue Promenade will include wider sidewalks, accommodated by a single lane of one-way traffic. The traffic will flow from North Main Street toward Otey Street with on-street parking (Continued on next page)

water runoff from the street is cleaned and minimized before draining to Stroubles Creek.

To make the project environmentally sustainable, stormwater planters are proposed to create a low-cost solution to manage the street’s stormwater runoff quality. Water will be collected in a shallow brick lined “v” shaped channel formed between the roadway and walkway. The inlets collect the runoff and direct flow into the storm water planting beds where watertolerant native plants will filter and store pollutants and absorb water. Permeable soil lets excess water infiltrate back into the ground. Storm

“The redesigned College Avenue will be the centerpiece of our downtown. We are creating a high-quality, comfortable environment for people to shop, dine and spend time,” said Town Manager, Marc Verniel. “The improvements will be complete in the fall of 2013 which will coordinate with the opening of Virginia Tech’s Center for the Arts. The completion of all of these projects will make downtown Blacksburg even greater than it is today.”

Virginia Tech Students Loving Where They Live

W

hen the majority of Virginia Tech students are in town, Blacksburg turns into a hub of activity. The downtown streets are filled with students looking to have a good time and patronize local businesses. Sometimes though, the different lifestyles of the average student living off campus and permanent Blacksburg resident, through no fault of their own, can conflict.

The Town of Blacksburg and Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech are working together to bridge the gap between town and gown by educating students about their rights and responsibilities of living off campus through the Love Where You Live campaign. “This partnership is aimed at creating a positive message for students in a way that captures their attention. Too many times we find ourselves telling students what not to do instead of encouraging them to do what they can do,” said Matt Hanratty, Blacksburg Housing and Neighborhood Services Manager. “Students are a valuable part of our community and we want them to truly embrace Blacksburg as their home and make them aware of all the opportunities the Town has to offer them to be actively engaged while they are here.” Through print, web, and social media, the Love Where You Live campaign will educate students

5|

about the responsibility of living off campus as well as the many ways to immerse themselves into the community; such as through recreation and volunteerism. “Many students graduate from Virginia Tech without knowing much about Blacksburg,” said Frank Shushok, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. “We understand that many students look at Blacksburg as a temporary home, but while they are here, it IS their home, and their first experience dealing with real-life issues, like rent and utilities. The Love Where You Live campaign is a great opportunity to remind students of their responsibility, but also to show them all the wonderful things Blacksburg has to offer.” For more information about the Love Where You Live campaign or to get involved with Town/Gown, contact Matt Hanratty at 540-961-4337 or mhanratty@blacksburg.gov.

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry assistive devices. Staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle; therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany those with special needs.

IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION

Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. It is difficult to find the perfect temperature for every participant on the bus. We suggest those who are cold-natured bring sweater/coats and warm-natured dress in layers. We are happy to make adjustments to the temperature but safety is our primary concern. Let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted about any temperature adjustments.
