For years Blacksburg Parks and Recreation has offered a wide range of senior trips serving up memories and experiences like no other. Whether it’s a quick day trip to the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre in Wytheville, or a craft beer tasting trip to Devil’s Backbone in Charlottesville, Blacksburg seniors definitely know how to have fun. experiences. Three Mystery Dine Outs are planned where diners indulge in culinary experiences at popular destinations in a casual atmosphere. The highlight of the season is a three day journey to Lancaster, PA. In the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, travelers will enjoy theater, a guided tour of Amish farmlands, Kitchen Kettle Village, and outlet shopping. “The trips are wonderful and well planned,” said senior traveler Franke Neumann. “It’s not just the trips, but the people on the trips. It all begins with our program leader Joy Herbert. She has such a love for all the people she serves. The Senior Center saved my life during a crucial down time. It made me get out of myself and get social.” While senior citizens tend to be the primary audience, Parks and Recreation trips are open to all ages. There’s truly something for everyone. New Signs Celebrate Blacksburg History

T

hey’re at every intersection

of Blacksburg’s historic downtown area; sleek, black, finial-adorned street signs with 16 gold squares on each. The historic street signs are one of many projects the town’s former

Museum Committee focused its efforts on to bring more attention to the original Sixteen Squares of Blacksburg. The Town of Blacksburg, through funds raised by the Blacksburg Museum Committee and the efforts of the 16 Squares subcommittee, will also install informational signs at each of ten historic sites in Blacksburg, conveying the origins of the structures and the stories of those who constructed or inhabited them. For example, the Price House, on Wharton Street, is a mid 19th

century log cabin, which once was the home of Thomas Nelson Conrad, whose career path included working as a confederate spy during the Civil War, and later serving as President of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, (now Virginia Tech.) These signs are expected to be installed by the summer of 2013. “The volunteers on this committee and subcommittee worked very hard to raise awareness of the Town’s heritage through lectures, walking tours, and programs,” said Museum Administrator Terry Nicholson. “These signs are another means to educate citizens and visitors about the rich history of our Town.” In addition to the signs, reconstruction is set to begin on the Alexander Black House this fall. Once restored, the magnificent Queen Anne Victorian will be a hub for the preservation of history and the celebration of arts and culture in Blacksburg. For more information on the restoration and how you can support the project, visit www.blacksburghistory.org or call 540-558-0746.

Blacksburg Transit 3.5 Million Riders

I

n recent years rising

fuel costs have driven more people to consider using transit. As a result Blacksburg Transit (BT) has experienced record increases in ridership. Most recently, BT set a new ridership record by providing 3.5 million passenger trips in one fiscal year. “Carrying over 3.5 million passengers in a year is a huge accomplishment for BT,” said Rebecca Martin, Director of Blacksburg Transit. “We want to thank each of our riders for contributing to this milestone.” The relationship between BT and Virginia Tech was established in 1983, but the reliance of Tech students on the bus service has grown over the years. Debby Freed, Alternative Transportation Manager at Virginia Tech adds, “Our students depend on BT to get them to campus and back. This is

another wonderful example of Virginia Tech and Blacksburg Transit’s successful partnership.” BT will celebrate 30 years of service in April 2013 and will plan a series of rider appreciation events. The first event will take place in the fall to honor riders for reaching 3.5 million goal. Additional events will be announced throughout the year at www.btransit.org.

PREPARE FOR THE NEXT EMERGENCY The weather in Blacksburg can be unpredictable. This summer’s big storms left many without power for days. How can you prepare for the next emergency? Visit www.readyvirginia.gov or call (804) 897-6526 to learn how to Get a Kit, Make a Plan, and Stay Informed. 4|

LIFE AND RECREATION IN BLACKSBURG

Givens Lane Widening and Progress Street Extension Project

G

etting from one end of Blacksburg to the other will be a little easier with the Givens Lane Widening and Progress Street Extension Project. Givens Lane stretches from North Main Street to Chickahominy Drive allowing drivers to get from the east to west end of town. However, the interrupted sidewalk and narrow street is not favorable for pedestrians and cyclists. The improvements for Givens Lane include a continuous eight foot wide, paved sidewalk and bike lanes from North Main Street to Chickahominy Drive. Two roundabouts will be placed at Givens Lane intersections with Progress Street and Northside Drive as a traffic calming measure. Starting in downtown Blacksburg, Progress Street allows for northerly travel through town, until just past Patrick Henry Drive. There Progress ends at Cherokee Street and picks up again at Givens Lane. By extending Progress Street, emergency response times will be shorter, especially from the downtown fire and rescue stations. Construction started in the spring and will last two years. For more information, including a link to the project blog, visit www.blacksburg.gov/givens.
