Dust Off the Golf Clubs and the Winter Blues With Some New Opportunities at The Hill
G
ot cabin fever? The Hill Municipal Golf Course has the cure. With so many new programs, special events, and tournaments scheduled for the upcoming season, golfers might just want to get the clubs out early. The golf course is open year round, but the season kicks off with daylight saving time in March. The Hill springs forward with weekly events, beginning with the popular Monday Night Madness (MNM). MNM is a weekly event that is open to the first 36 players who call that morning to make a reservation. Formats and teams vary from week to week, and staff will do their best to split up the good players. Participants can win prizes and proshop gift certificates. New this year are Tuesday Night
Specials with individual or team competitions and prizes. Tuesday evenings will be full of surprises at The Hill.
Wednesday night is New River Valley Golf Association Night (NRVGA). The NRVGA is a newly formed organization that promotes golf and friendly competition. The group will organize team and individual matches throughout the season. Join the NRVGA, track your handicap online through the Virginia State Golf Association, and meet some new golf partners. For the kids, Thursday is Junior Golf Academy Night. Under the direction of PGA Apprentice Warren Taylor, kids ages 8-16 can participate in weekly instruction in the practice areas and on the golf course. Academy

Dust Off the Golf Clubs and the Winter Blues With Some New Opportunities at The Hill members will enjoy dedicated weekend tee times, be eligible for the Prince and Princess of the Hill championships, and receive full playing privileges at the Hill for the year. Academy membership is just $200 or $75 for annual pass holders. Try something different on a Friday night. The first Friday of every month is Ladies Wine and Nine Night. Come out to sample wines from local vineyards, network, and enjoy nine holes of golf with friends. Bring your date out to The Hill on the second Friday of the month for Date Night. For less than the price of a dinner and a movie, couples can enjoy a round of golf. Bring the whole family on the third Friday of the month for Family Night. Part of the PGA’s Tee It Forward program, Family Night is a great time to introduce the family to the game of golf in an inexpensive and non-stressful environment. For those with a competitive spirit, there will be several tournaments throughout the system. In addition to the popular Cohee Cup team event and the King and Queen of The Hill club championships, The Hill will host Spring Scramble in March. Celebrate the end of the school semester with the School’s Out Shootout in May and the challenging and fun Superintendant’s Revenge in September. Coming soon are new daily rates that will make golfing one low price every day of the week. Whether golfers pay the daily rate or get one of the affordable annual passes, The Hill will continue to be the best golfing value in the New River Valley. Check out the details on pages 28-29, by visiting www.blacksburg.gov/thehill or come by the pro-shop.

Emergency and Minor Home Repair Program
N
o one should have to live in substandard housing, but sometimes emergency repairs are needed that the homeowner cannot afford. The Emergency and Minor Home Repair Program offered by the Town of Blacksburg can help homeowners, living in the town limits, receive free emergency and minor repairs to substandard housing conditions.
“The Minor and Emergency Home Repair Program allows us to meet a need in a unique way by assisting not only owners of traditional stick-built homes, but also owners of mobile homes.” said Crystal Hypes, Grants Coordinator for the Town of Blacksburg. For the elderly and disabled who cannot live in their home in its current state can get their home modified for accessibility. Homeowners who qualify must meet Housing and Urban Development’s current low- to moderate-income standards, and live in a home they own in the corporate limits of the Town of Blacksburg For more information on the Emergency and Minor Home Repair Program or to determine if you qualify, contact Crystal Hypes at chypes@blacksburg.gov or 540-951-4336.

Get Behind the Scenes of the Police Department
E
ver wanted to take a ride in a police car; the front of the car, not the back? Go for a ride along with the Blacksburg Police Department (BPD) by signing up for the Citizen Police Academy. More than just a chance to ride in a cool police car, the Citizens Police Academy takes participants behind the scenes to learn about the different facets of BPD. Officers will teach about the K-9 units, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Drug Task Force, and Evidence Collection. Get some great crime prevention tips and find out how the BPD can help make your home unappealing to criminals. The academy is a great opportunity to get to know the men and women who have chosen to dedicate their lives to law enforcement at the Blacksburg Police Department. The next class will begin in March. For more information contact Debbie Atkins at 540-961-1170 or datkins@blacksburg.gov.

LIFE AND RECREATION IN BLACKSBURG
SENIOR AND ADULT PROGRAMS FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry assistive devices. Staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle; therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany those with special needs.
IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION
Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. It is difficult to find the perfect temperature for every participant on the bus. We suggest those who are cold-natured bring sweater/coats and warm-natured dress in layers. We are happy to make adjustments to the temperature but safety is our primary concern. Let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted about any temperature adjustments.
