KEEP IN TOUCH
Clearing the Way For a Safer Commute
James Price, a 25 year veteran of the Public Works department and snowplow operator.
F
or some folks, iit’s one of the
best sounds of winter. No, not the kids sledding or the fireplace crackling; it’s the sound of metal on asphalt as the snowplows clear the roads. Finally, the cabin fever is lifting. When the forecast calls for snow or ice, and many are staying inside, the Town of Blacksburg Public Works crews are preparing the plows and going to work. So what does it take to keep the roads clear in Blacksburg? About 150 tons of salt for an average storm, (the equivalent weight of approximately 19 elephants), a dozen or more trucks, and a good number of snowplow operators working 12 hour shifts. “The snowplow drivers and all of the workers clearing sidewalks and parking lots put in very long hours in all types of nasty weather,” said Kelly Mattingly, the town’s Public Works Director. “They take pride in what they do and they do a great job keeping our roads and town properties safe for our citizens.” The first roads to be cleared are Main Street from LewisGale Montgomery Regional Hospital to the intersection of Route 460 and North
3|
Main Street, Patrick Henry Drive, and Prices Fork to Merrimac Road. Once those roads have been treated the bus routes are next. When the snow stops, crews start working on the subdivisions and secondary roads. Last year close to $500,000 was spent on ice and snow removal in the Town of Blacksburg. “There’s no question that snow removal is costly, but it’s an essential service we provide to the community, so we see it as an investment in public safety and quality of life,” said Mattingly. Safe Travel Tips If you must drive: • Be careful not to pass the snow plows or travel too closely. Plows can throw salt 20 to 30 feet possibly damaging your car. • After a storm, give your car a rinse. Salt from the roads can be damaging to paint. • Before a snow storm try to remove your car from the streets so the plows can safely pass. • Ideally, stay off the roads until they’re clear, but if you must drive, please take it slow and be kind to your fellow drivers.

March Retirement Planned For Chief of Police
O
n March 1, after thirty years as a
member of the Blacksburg Police Department, Chief Kimberley Crannis is retiring. After graduating from Ferrum College with a degree in Public Administration, Chief Crannis started living her childhood dream of becoming a officer when she was hired by the Blacksburg Police Department in January of 1984. During her 30 years with the department, she moved up the ranks from patrol officer to detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. After Chief William Brown retired in 2006, Crannis was hired as Chief of Police. When serving as captain, Crannis started Chief Kimberley S. Crannis the Citizens Police Academy as a part of her Masters work at Virginia Tech. As chief, she increased the amount of officers and staff in the police department, added three K-9 officers, and updated the department’s technology infrastructure. Crannis is particularly proud of her the collaborative relationship with other police departments in the area. The collaboration of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Montgomery County, and Virginia Tech, has led to the formation of a regional 911 system set to begin in 2015. “I have spent my entire career working in a great organization with great people,” said Chief Crannis. “I love it here. But I set my retirement date in the early 90s and am looking forward the next phase of my life, moving to the eastern part of Virginia to work on my golf game and ride my motorcycle.” “Chief Crannis has worked throughout her career to build the strong professional culture that exists in our police department today,” said Town Manager Marc Verniel. “Under her leadership, the department has maintained national accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) further demonstrating its commitment of professionalism and community service. She will be greatly missed by all of her colleagues at the Town of Blacksburg, her friends in law enforcement, and the citizens of Blacksburg.” The Chief of Police position was advertised locally, statewide and in a few national publications. The applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be selected for the initial interview phase which will begin in late January. The interview panels will consist of local law enforcement officials, Blacksburg citizens, business leaders, and representatives from the Town of Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. The town hopes to have a new police chief hired by March 1.

A New Era For Blacksburg Transit
B
lacksburg Transit (BT) is at the crossroads of something exciting. Already
one of the most efficient transit systems in the country, BT is looking to make some big changes in how it moves people. In the fall of 2016, a multimodal facility will open on Perry Street on the Virginia Tech campus. Here commuters will be able to park their car and then catch a BT or Smartway bus, rent a bike, or walk to their destination. “It’s going to be a whole transit store where people can get more information on public and private transportation providers, like Greyhound,” said Blacksburg Transit Director, Rebecca Martin. “Think of it as a one stop transit shop.” The use of the multimodal facility as a transportation hub on campus will lead to some major route changes. Buses will no longer time check, (waiting in place to maintain the schedule), on the Drillfield. Instead, there will be connector buses, similar to what Disneyworld uses, to keep people moving on campus. The multimodal facility is unique in that it will be a town-run facility on state-owned property. Usually such hubs are built on private property, but Virginia Tech, in an effort to encourage alternative forms of transportation, has incorporated the multimodal facility into its master plan. Currently the project is in the design phase and the town is applying for grants to help fund the construction and operation. The estimated cost will be $32.5 million with a majority of the money coming from federal funds, and the rest split evenly between the state and town. “We feel really good about the elevated level of service we’ll be able to provide when the new multimodal facility opens,” said Martin. “It’s the beginning of a new era for Blacksburg Transit.”

One Big Day. One Big Thanks.
F
or one day in spring, over 6,000 volunteers from
Virginia Tech, celebrating the university’s motto Ut Prosim, (That I May Serve), go out into the New River Valley to complete hundreds of community service projects. The Big Event is a student-run community service program where volunteers do basic yard work, painting, window washing, cleaning, and minor home repairs - for free. Since its beginning in 2002, The Big Event at Virginia Tech has grown exponentially. In its first year, there were 475 volunteers who completed 60 projects. Last year, there were 6,855 volunteers and 840 projects. The next Big Event is on April 5. Organizers would like to complete over 1,000 service projects for the year. Anyone can sign up to have work done on their home or business regardless of age or economical status. Registration to host a service project for The Big Event will open on January 21. For more information, call (540) 440-1244, email bigevent@vt.edu or visit http://vtbigevent.org/.

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry assistive devices. Staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle; therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany those with special needs.
IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION
Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. It is difficult to find the perfect temperature for every participant on the bus. It is suggested those who are cold-natured bring sweater/coats and warm-natured dress in layers. Staff is happy to make adjustments to the temperature but safety is the primary concern. Let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted about any temperature adjustments.
