Active at Every Age Exercise your fitness opportunities at the Blacksburg Community Center

R

egular physical activity is

one of the most important things you can do for your health. At the Blacksburg Community Center, there are 28 group exercise classes offered throughout each week, for every interest and ability level. “It is never too late to start exercising, whether you are seven or 70,” Joy Herbert, senior program supervisor, said. “Even if you haven’t been really active throughout your life, you can still improve your flexibility, balance, strength, and body composition. Exercise benefits everyone and anyone at any age.” You also don’t have to commit to a semester of classes and risk signing up for something you’ll dread. You can observe any class you’re interested in, and rather than sign up for a course, the Community Center offers a pass system, which allows you to take any class. A 13-class pass costs $25; a 25-class pass costs $55. “Our programs are really affordable, with no membership commitments,” Herbert said. “As long as you use your visits within a year, you don’t lose anything.” The passes also allow you to mix and match classes according to your interests and schedule. “You could take the low-impact aerobics for cardio, then later that week take strength training to help build endurance.” Popular classes include Tai Chi, which is a discipline that builds in steps. “It is a meditative program, and offers great benefits for those wanting to work on their balance,” Herbert said.

3|

For cardio exercise, the center’s Boot Camp Lite is a low-impact version of regular boot camp. The class works in circuits, like doing squats for a minute, then crunches for a minute. Line dancing classes provide a fun exercise alternative, too. You don’t need a partner, and you get your heart rate up. Herbert stresses that even those new to group classes shouldn’t feel intimidated. “Our instructors are very sensitive to our students’ needs, and they’re trained on how to tone down classes to prevent injury,” Herbert said. “All of our classes are different with different goals, and benefits,” Herbert said. Many classes also have a social component, so you get to know your classmates in the first few minutes socializing, which can help keep you motivated during your workouts. “Try all the classes,” Herbert said. “It is a great way to enhance your health.” For more information about exercise options at the Blacksburg Community Center, visit www.blacksburg.gov/ recreation, contact Joy Herbert at 540961-1134 or jherbert@blacksburg.gov, or visit the Community Center at 725 Patrick Henry Dr.

Transportation Cooperation Blacksburg’s multi-modal transit facility will be a national model for public transportation and town and university cooperation

B

lacksburg Transit buses have about 3.5 million passengers per year, about

20,000 passengers each day. There are 50 buses in the fleet, and on a busy weekday, there can be fifteen buses driving around Virginia Tech’s Drillfield, picking up and dropping off students, faculty and staff. To help alleviate and coordinate this bus traffic, Blacksburg and Virginia Tech are working together to build a multi-modal transit facility that will become a hub for all transit in the community. Scheduled to open in Fall 2017, the building will be two stories tall and 14,000 square feet, with 18 covered bus slips. The facility will be built on Virginia Tech’s campus, on Perry Street, in the heart of university’s academic core. “Everything is going very smoothly, and there’s a lot of excitement,” Steve Ross, deputy town manager and interim Blacksburg Transit director, said. The partnership between Blacksburg and Virginia Tech to build the facility is one of a kind in the nation, and money for the $30 million project is coming from state, federal, and Virginia Tech funds. “I think it is an example of the good relationship between the town and university,” Ross said. Little should change for riders, according to Ross. “Although people will be picked up and dropped off at the transit facility,” he said. In addition to Blacksburg Transit, Valley Metro’s SmartWay commuter bus, Radford Transit buses, and buses from private operators like Home Ride of Virginia, will also use the facility. The building will also house Virginia Tech’s Alternative Transportation Office, and will act as a bike hub, with bike lockers, a bike share program, and a room with tools and other supplies so cyclists can repair their bikes if needed. “The community should be proud of this project. We have a great transit system and reducing traffic is an improvement everyone can appreciate. Our goal is to make the system safer and more efficient,” Ross said.

No Hokie Left Behind Blacksburg and Virginia Tech police departments work with students to raise awareness about being safe

T

he fraternities and sororities are doing it.

The VT Dairy Science Club is doing it. The Corps of Cadets are doing it, too. Thousands of Virginia Tech students are making a simple promise: to look out for one another. “It’s going back to the buddy system,” said Lt. Nathan O’Dell of the Blacksburg Police Department. Eager to reach more students about safety, Blacksburg Police Chief Anthony Wilson and Virginia Tech Police Chief Kevin Foust worked together to create a simple message that would resonate with young people, No Hokie Left Behind. “Our message is ‘go with trusted friends, stay with trusted friends, and leave with trusted friends,’” O’Dell said. “Not just someone you Safety is important met that night,” he warns. “Friends do really look out for for everyone, so each other. It minimizes or eliminates that opportunity Blacksburg Police are for you to be victimized.” The department bought wristbands emblazoned with the phrase and worked with student groups to make the safety pledge. Students shared their photos and promises on the No Hokie Left Behind Facebook page, which now has close to 3,000 likes. “We knew with this age group, social media plays a massive role,” O’Dell said. “Students can show they’re committed to taking care of their fellow Hokies, and we can use the page to communicate our safety initiatives and keep the message fresh in their minds.” Now students are working together to take ownership of the program, and have applied to make No Hokie Left Behind a student service organization at Virginia Tech. “We’re the catalyst, we got it going, but this is the best way for the effort to live on,” he said.

also reaching out to the community to share safety information with the Be Safe Blacksburg program. The program kicked off just before Halloween, and officers will visit Blacksburg schools year-round to connect with students and share safety information, and organize community safety events to help spread the word.

O’Dell said the program has helped students see Blacksburg as more than just a campus. “We hope by working side by side, students will become more involved with us in the community, and that will have a positive impact.”

Christmas Trees Make a Big Difference

T

hirty million live Christmas trees are sold each year, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. After your tree has brightened your holiday, don’t let it languish in a landfill—keep giving back to your community through recycling and replanting.

Cut trees If you’ve chosen a cut Christmas tree to decorate for the holidays, you can recycle it by simply leaving it at your curbside. “The trees must be free of all decorations and wires,” Karen Day, solid waste operations specialist, said. The public works crew will gather them up and bring them to the Toms Creek Basin, where all brush collected by the town is held. When the pile becomes large enough, it is chipped and sold to a company for use as an alternative fuel source. “In 2014 we collected 588 trees,” Day said. “By chipping the trees, it keeps them out of the landfill.” Large items like trees take up valuable landfill space, and it is far more expensive to take them to the landfill than recycle them. Leave your cut tree curbside between January 5-16, 2015, and the town will pick it up for recycling. Be sure to remove all decorations and wires. Balled root trees

Keep your balled-root tree healthy! A great way to keep the tree watered is to cover the ball with crushed ice, so the tree gets the water it needs and the roots can still breathe.

If you’ve selected a tree with a burlap ball of roots at the bottom, but don’t have a place to plant it yourself, call the Parks and Recreation Department and they’ll plant it in a town park. “We pick it up from residents’ homes, so it isn’t an inconvenience,” Dean Crane, director, said. “You can drag it out to your deck or driveway, so you don’t even need to be home.” The Parks Department will plant the trees according to how many they collect and which parks may need them. Trees like white pines are native to Virginia, but Crane says that any kind of conifer will do. Tree vendors in the area have information about how to donate balled trees to the park. “Your Christmas tree can be a gift to the parks for years and years to come,” Crane said.

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry walkers, canes or similar assistive devices. However, staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle. Therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany participants with special needs such as significant hearing or vision impairments or mental disabilities, who require personal assistance during the operation of the bus or Senior Center programs.

IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION

Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. Your comfort is important to us. However, it is difficult to find the perfect temperature for everyone on the bus. We suggest the cold-natured bring a sweater or coat and warm-blooded dress in layers. We are happy to make adjustments to the temperature but will not know you are uncomfortable unless you tell us. Please keep in mind that your safety is our primary concern so let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted while driving.
