One Big Bin Single-stream will make recycling easier and more efficient
S
eparate no longer! Starting July 1, Blacksburg residents will begin single-stream recycling. With the new system, residents will get a larger receptacle and a system that makes recycling easier for both residents and pick-up crews. No more separating Single-stream recycling means that all recyclable materials can be mixed in one bin --- paper products and comingled containers. The materials are separated later at a recycling facility in Salem. Residents will get new green recycling bins that are the same size as their blue garbage bins. These larger bins will accommodate more recyclables and can be emptied into the waste removal truck with a robotic arm. Alternate week pickup With a larger bin to collect recyclables, pick up will now occur every other week. Pick up days will be unchanged; residents will still put out their recycling the same day as their trash pickup. When do I recycle? It can take time to adjust to a new system, and the Town of Blacksburg will work to help residents remember their recycling days with pick up date magnets, information sheets, social media, and other reminders.
What can you recycle? #1-7 plastic • microwave food trays glass bottles and jars (all colors) steel and tin cans (empty and rinse!) newspaper • office paper
MyWaste App Download the MyWaste App for reminders about trash and recycling pick up days, special collection events like fall and spring clean-up, and delays due to holidays or snow days. The free app is available for both Apple and Android phones. Find more information and a link to download at www.blacksburg.gov/recycle.
WIPES CLOG PIPES Just because the product is labeled as “flushable” doesn’t mean it is. Wipes can cause blockages in your sewer line and leave you with a very costly sewer repair. Grab a Seat Blacksburg’s Restaurant Week offers new dishes and special dining deals The fifth Blacksburg Restaurant Week will be held July 11-18, and is celebrated with specials from a variety of restaurants. The event is co-sponsored by Downtown Blacksburg, Inc., and the Blacksburg Partnership. Held mid-summer when most college students, and even many locals, are out of town, the event is an effort to boost business to local restaurants. Participating restaurants offer deals and prix-fixe menus throughout the week. They have a chance to reach new diners, as their specials get extra promotion. “Restaurants can reach a much larger audience with little effort,” Laureen Blakemore, director of Downtown Blacksburg, Inc., said. New faces don’t just mean a temporary boost in business, but also a chance for restaurants to convert them into regulars. “Restaurant week seems to generate a buzz in the community,” Diane Akers, president of the Blacksburg Partnership, said.
Cabo Fish Taco has participated in Restaurant Week since the beginning, and owner Gary Walker has noticed the event’s popularity grow. “It gives us a boost, but also a different kind of clientle,” Walker said. “People who may not come downtown a lot have an excuse to try something different.” Joe Chasse, who works in downtown Blacksburg at Modea, looks forward to the special offerings Restaurant Week brings. “I enjoyed some good tapas during Restaurant Week last year, and some unique desserts,” Chasse said. “The most exciting part is when restaurants really bring their A game and do something different.” Restaurant Week provides the perfect excuse to take a break from cooking and get out and about in Blacksburg’s balmy summer evenings. “I visit as many restaurants as possible during the week,” Blakemore said. Akers added, “I actually plan my week around which restaurant I’m going to for each meal.”

A Place for Creative Living A new zoning overlay in Blacksburg will allow artists to live, work, and sell their wares out of their homes.
I
t is becoming a little easier to try and make a living as an artist in Blacksburg. The town has created a live/work/ sell arts overlay district in order to be more responsive to the needs of artists in the community. The new zoning means that artists can have a home studio and sell their work from their homes without having to pay fees that might be associated with renting a commercial property. “It can be a financial burden for artists,” Anne McClung, director of the planning and building department, said. Artists living in the overlay district will get a waiver on certain permit costs and business occupational licenses, as well as gain other financial incentives. There is a simple application process, and then artists can register their businesses with the town. “We will sit down with people interested in moving into the district and walk them through the process, so they get a full understanding of the expectations and benefits,” McClung said. The arts overlay district is in the residential neighborhood adjacent to downtown bordered by Turner, Progress, and Clay streets, which currently includes a great deal of student rental properties. There is variety in lot and home sizes in the overlay district, which have the potential to be great sculpture gardens, pottery, glasswork, photography or painting studios. The town hopes the overlay district will encourage more owner-occupied residences and give landlords new options for their rental properties, while also increasing the diversity of the area. “We want to expand the downtown arts community,” McClung said. “For artists thinking ‘I’d like to find a way to live downtown and do my craft,’ we have a way to help support that.” For more information on the live/work/sell arts overlay district, contact Anne McClung at 540-961-1126 or amcclung@blacksburg.gov.
Safety Improvements Planned for University City Boulevard Beginning this summer University City Boulevard will be closed from Broce Drive to Lynn Drive for a 12-18 month long road safety improvement project. During this time detours and special resident access will be in effect and transit riders will be accommodated by two temporary bus turnarounds on University City Boulevard. Project details and ongoing progress reports can be found at www.blacksburg.gov/ucb or by calling 540-961-1126.

Put Me in, Coach Volunteer Coaches Make Sports Happen in Blacksburg
T
he Town of Blacksburg’s Parks and Recreation department recruits at least 60 volunteer head coaches for six different sports programs available for children throughout the year. “Sometimes I have to search out coaches, but not usually,” Adam Lloyd, Athletic Supervisor, said. “We have had coaches come back year after year in many sports, including basketball, football, and wrestling.” The volunteers who give their time to coach Blacksburg’s youth have a huge and longlasting impact. “My coaches guided me along my career path,” said Brad Epperley, who has been a volunteer coach for more than twenty years. After working all day as Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Christiansburg, Epperley makes time to volunteer because he enjoys it and also to give back to the community. “The impressions coaches leave on children last a lifetime, and for me, it is important that we as coaches make a positive impression,” Epperley said. Sports provide children with great exercise, a cornerstone to building healthy habits throughout a lifetime, and participation in sports programs has been shown to improve learning performance. Sports also teach important social skills, like teamwork, fairness, honesty, respect, and how to cope with both winning and losing. “When you lose, you have to find out what you did wrong and how to fix it. Life is very similar – the most important play is the next one,” Epperley said. “Volunteers are the backbone of our sports programs,” Lloyd said. “The kids and the parents are very grateful, and it brings our community together.” The town provides Coaches Clinics for volunteers, and also does two separate background checks to ensure safety. Anyone interested in volunteer coach opportunities should contact Adam Lloyd at alloyd@blacksburg.gov or call 540-961-1179.

A fun recreational experience for children provided by Kidercizeparties.com under the direction of Maria Rossi. Bring bathing suit, towel, sun screen, snack, (no peanut products), and change of clothes.
ART START CAMP
It’s fun to be an artist. Young children love coming to Art Camp where they can create all kinds of art projects using many different media. All they need to bring is their creativity and imagination.
Learn all about art and artists through handson, creative exploration in all media, and have fun while doing it. Watercolor, acrylic, tempera painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, 3-D work and ceramics. You don’t have to choose just one.
ACT & REACT DRAMA CAMP
Study stage techniques, write, build, and perform your own play. Equal parts in terms of length cannot be guaranteed. Each child will receive equal training and write their own parts. There will be a public performance. Instructor: Alicia Lloyd
