Hidden Hiking Treasures A Primer for Autumn Adventure

I

t’s no secret that the New River Valley has some of the most breathtaking colors

and views in the fall months. Families, hikers, and visitors flock to the Huckleberry Trail, Cascades, McAfee Knob, Dragon’s Tooth, and other popular outdoor destinations. But there are some lesser-known trails and places to get those amazing fall views – some right here in Blacksburg. Ellett Valley Trail If you want to stay close to Blacksburg head down to the Ellett Valley for an easy, one mile loop called the Ellett Valley Trail. This greenway is part of Blacksburg’s 500+ acres of parkland and is one of the lesser-known trails in our area. Enjoy the trees as they delight with their fall colors and relax at an old spring while enjoying the sounds of nature. Gateway Park Just off Meadowbrook Drive near Heritage Park is Gateway Park. Hike, bike, or ride your horse on this easy to moderate trail. For more of an adventure take Old Farm Trail into the National Forest where the path goes from easy to difficult in no time. Those who complete this advanced hike in late fall when the leaves have fallen will be rewarded with a panoramic view of Blacksburg below. The trail will also take you to Pandapas Pond. Mill Creek Just 30 miles outside of Blacksburg is Mill Creek Nature Park in Narrows. This park is over 140 acres of absolute beauty. The nature trail winds along side of Mill Creek providing visitors with views of waterfalls, creek pools, and a dam built in the 1780s. It is an easy to moderate hike and leads to the Jefferson National Forest. More information on Mill Creek can be found at http://virginiasmtnplayground.com/mill-creek/. To learn more about Blacksburg’s hidden hiking treasures contact Blacksburg Parks and Recreation at 540-443-1100, email recreation@blacksburg.gov, or visit http://www.blacksburg.gov/outdoors. Better yet, get out there and start hiking! About Town Town || www.blacksburg.gov www.blacksburg.gov 3 || About

Thank you, Mayor Rordam tickets, a barking dog, the state Parking of the neighborhood or the state of the

world—none of it surprises Ron Rordam when people approach him. “You have to be ready for anything,” he said. “Being mayor is a part-time job with 24/7 responsibilities.” Mayor Rordam, who is not seeking reelection this November, has served Blacksburg for more than twenty years. He was elected to town council in 1996 and has been mayor since 2006. One of the most important things he’s learned about government is that change takes time. And that’s a good thing. “To make anything happen in localities, you have to have support from the community and bring them in on major decisions. You get ideas and feedback you can use to tweak or even change directions. Once you know and understand that, having patience is easy,” Rordam said. Patience has paid off, especially with one of Rordam’s favorite projects-redesigning College Avenue and Main Street. “We started the process in 2000. The physical changes took a few years—but the planning took more than a decade.” Rordam also feels the changes put Blacksburg in the right place for the future. “These initiatives will live on and grow as we build Blacksburg as an arts destination,” he said. As January 1 approaches, Rordam finds himself reflecting on his years in office, and remains positive. “We’re ready, as a community, to move ahead in a way that is uniquely Blacksburg.” He also reminds us that local politics is important, and all politics is local. “Local elected officials have a better understanding of what is right for their community. That is where the action is.”

Helping secure Blacksburg’s sustainable future In 2015, Rordam was awarded the Mayors’ Climate Protection Award for the Solarize Blacksburg project. At the time, Rordam said “Our citizens … and our town are the real winners.”

Back to School School resource officers teach and learn

T

here are some days when Officer Ben Machingo doesn’t make it out of his office at Blacksburg High School. Students stop by to talk to the BHS school resource officer about sports, school, and their families. Sometimes they need encouragement or advice. “When they stop by my office, it isn’t because they’ve done something bad,” Machingo said. The school resource officer program at Blacksburg schools is about making schools safer through learning and building relationships. It is a cooperation between law enforcement, schools, students, parents, and the community. Officers who serve in the program receive training in school law, counseling, crisis intervention, and dealing with children. Resource officers are placed in four elementary schools as well as at the middle and high schools. Their duties vary depending on the ages of the children and their needs—officers in the elementary schools teach Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE); older students are taught Virginia Rules, a course designed to help teens understand the law as it applies to their everyday lives. Building relationships allows everyone to get to know each other beyond stereotypes. “For the students, it is important for them to see us as people, not as a uniform. We are normal humans,” Machingo said. The officers are learning, too. “I’ve learned that students need to be treated as individuals. I enjoy getting to know these kids and who they are.” Machingo considers his work at BHS the most rewarding thing he’s done in law enforcement. His favorite part is seeing students grow and mature throughout the school year. “I’m just hoping to impact them in a positive way, to educate students to make better decisions.”

Merchants Groups Bring Visibility to Commercial Districts In every community across the country

you hear people talking about buying local. This means different things to different people, but in Blacksburg it means one thing; supporting the businesses large and small that make our community so unique. It’s a choice and a way of life.

The Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg (known as Downtown Blacksburg, Inc. or DBI) have long had a handle on what it takes to make downtown and its local shops thrive. They do this through events and collaborations with their member businesses and they work with the town on improvements that create an open and inviting atmosphere for all. In 2012, Blacksburg Town Council appointed the South Main Task Force to focus on continued improvements and economic development of the South Main business corridor. From the task force grew the South Main Merchant’s Association (SOMA). From there, the University City Boulevard (UCB) Merchant’s Association was formed, and then Connect North Main, focused on the vitality of the North Main Street

6|

commercial area. These groups were established to facilitate communication and crossmarketing between businesses in the various commercial areas of town. One member of Town Council serves as a liaison to each. The groups provide a forum for members to meet and discuss issues related to the success and growth of local businesses. They have business meetings monthly and quarterly they come together for a Merchant Mingle hosted by one of the groups. “Since our inception we have hosted events, marketing training sessions, and social mixers,” said Paula Bolte, President of SOMA and owner of Imaginations Toy Store and Annie Kays. “We’re honored to represent the south side of Blacksburg as we work with other merchant organizations in town to support and promote Blacksburg businesses. Working together provides a stronger voice to our elected officials, as well as association members and citizens of Blacksburg.” To keep up with the happenings in Blacksburg’s thriving commercial districts visit www.blacksburg.gov/ merchantgroups, and get out there and shop local.
