A Town’s Best Friend Blacksburg Police Department’s K9 members provide an extra level of safety and security to the community

W

ork time is playtime for

the four-legged members of the Blacksburg PD. “The dog’s sense of play and drive is crucial to their work,” Lieutenant Mike Albert said. In 2007, Albert was the first officer from Blacksburg to go through K9 training. Today, the department has four dogs--three for narcotics detection and one for explosives. “A dog has two million scent receptors we don’t have,” Albert said. “Imagine walking into a bakery and smelling something sweet. You might knowit’s a pie, but a dog can smell the individual ingredients--yeast, butter, flour, eggs, everything.” The way a dog’s nose is designed allows it to locate precisely where a scent is coming from, and provides an extra level of information no human can. Each dog is paired with a handler, and becomes part of their handler’s family. “But they’re work dogs, not pets,” Albert emphasizes. The dogs and handlers go through training together, and like any strong Officer Micah Kobia with Brek partnership, they have to be a good fit, personality-wise. “You really have to know your dog,” Albert said. This especially helps in the field. “For a faint odor, one dog may bark, another may only whimper or have a more subtle alert signal.” Blacksburg’s K9s are on patrol every day, help at special events, and sometimes assist other agencies. “The dogs are a great resource for us,” Albert said. “They open up so many other avenues to help keep the town safe.”

The Greenest Thumbs in Town Keeping Blacksburg’s green spaces beautiful

B

lacksburg’s town horticulturalist, Beth Carson,

thinks her official title sounds a little stuffy. “I get to work with a great group of creative and talented people to maintain Blacksburg’s public green spaces,” she said. Landscaping town green spaces presents its own challenges, because each space has different uses and needs. “Trees may be needed in the middle of a downtown concrete sidewalk or in a park. Shrubs may be planted at a town building or a busy downtown parking lot. Bulbs, perennials, or annuals may be desired in the middle of a busy median strip Get garden inspired. If you’re or at a quiet historic property,” Carson explained. Keeping everything ship-shape requires yearround work. “Our crews are constantly mowing, planting, pruning, removing, mulching, watering, fertilizing—and new projects are always underway,” Carson said.

stumped for ideas about what to plant in your garden this spring, Carson recommends spending time at local garden centers, strolling the Hahn Horticulture Garden, or reaching out to the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, then “take notes and pictures of the things you like.”

“Variety is the spice of life” is Carson’s plant philosophy, and she works to choose a diverse palette to make Blacksburg’s gardens interesting all year. “We have our favorite standbys, but it is fun to mix in some things that make people stop and say, ‘Wow! Where can I buy those?’” She also works to incorporate native plants in town landscapes—as well as edibles. “We have some edibles planted along the Huckleberry Trail and at the Five Chimneys building,” Carson said. “We like to show that anyone can incorporate edibles into their home landscape.”

But don’t ask Carson to try and name a favorite plant. “If it contains chlorophyll, chances are I will be interested in it,” she said. “There are so many ways plants add beauty, improve our environment, and make our lives better. It’s impossible to pick just one.”

Weatherize Blacksburg will help you save energy—and money A new town effort will emphasize efficiency for a greener home

E

very month you don’t address energy efficiency in your home, you’re wasting money. So if you’ve been holding back on making an energy-related home improvement, now’s the time to do it—thanks to Weatherize Blacksburg.

Weatherize Blacksburg is a new program supported by the town and several community partners to help homeowners make their homes more energy efficient. “You can reduce your home’s energy consumption by 20-25 percent with better efficiency,” Carol Davis, Blacksburg’s sustainability manager, said. “People are hungry for clean energy options. That can mean using solar or other renewables, but it also means using energy more efficiently at home,” Davis explained. Improvements can help make your house more efficient, no matter how old it is. “Building codes for energy efficiency are the bare minimum. Many problems can be relatively easy to address, and even a few small changes can make a difference,” Davis said. In 2007, Blacksburg promised to work toward reducing its energy consumption by 80 percent by 2050 as part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, along with more than a thousand other towns and cities across the U.S. The town is also one of 50 semi-finalists for Georgetown University’s energy prize—with a $5 million award for the community best able to reduce its energy consumption over a twoyear period. Weatherize Blacksburg builds on the success of Solarize Blacksburg, which made solar energy easier and more affordable to install locally. “We more than quadrupled residential solar in the community,” Davis said. “It is a stunning outcome.” If town residents keep up the momentum, Blacksburg will be greener—and a national leader in energy efficiency.

5 DIY energy-saving tips • Swap your light bulbs for longlasting LEDs—they use 75 percent less energy than regular bulbs. • Upgrade to Energy Star-rated appliances. Refrigerators and washer/dryers are big energy hogs. • Replace or clean your furnace filters once a month. • Take advantage of the sun for natural light and heat during the day. • Lower your water heater’s maximum temperature to 120 degrees to save 7-11 percent on water heating costs.

Start measuring your home’s efficiency today. Sign up at http://energizeblacksburg.wattzon.com, answer a few simple questions, and you’ll get an energy efficiency to-do list. You’ll also be eligible for reduced rates on home energy assessments, free site reviews for solar installations, and rebates on energy-saving materials and appliances.

Town Takes Pride in Signature Events Blacksburg’s seasonal events create a sense of community

R

andy Hall’s favorite Blacksburg event is the annual Holiday Parade during

the Winter Lights Festival. But he hasn’t watched the parade in person for 24 years. “The only time I’ve seen it is on video,” Hall, the town’s community program supervisor, said. Hall spends the duration of the parade at the staging area on Perry Street, zipping back and forth on his Gator. With communications support from the Virginia Tech Amateur Radio Association, he is responsible for getting hundreds of parade participants and their floats, vehicles, or horses aligned and organized.

Holiday

Parade

The holiday parade is just one of four seasonal events organized by the town. Each event requires months of planning, and town employees across many departments pitch in to ensure things run smoothly. Volunteers also help out. The Chi Delta Alpha sorority helps fill thousands of Easter eggs and hides them beneath straw for the littlest egg hunters at the Municipal Park. Circle K volunteers help organize games for the 500-600 kids who come to the Halloween carnival each year.

The hard work is more than worth it. “When the parade kicks off and you see people on a float smiling and having a good time, or a kid with a bag of Halloween treats or a basket of eggs--everyone’s so excited and it is nice to see,” Hall said. Parks and Recreation Director Dean Crane organizes the concert and fireworks for Independence Day. Planning for the event begins in January, and the crews work hard to make sure the park and other facilities are at their best for Independen over 5000 attendees. On July 5 ce Day Fire wor ks he and his crew are back at the park by dawn to clean up. “If you come to the Municipal Park by 9:30 the next morning, you’d never know there’d been anything there,” he said.

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The Parks and Recreation department has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry assistive devices. Staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle; therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany those with special needs.

IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION

Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. It is difficult to find the perfect temperature for every participant on the bus. We suggest those who are cold-natured bring sweater/coats and warm-natured dress in layers. We are happy to make adjustments to the temperature but safety is our primary concern. Let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted about any temperature adjustments.
