Blacksburg Tavern A Piece of Modern Day History and Cuisine
! SOON ern G N I COM burg Tav s Black
Daniel Riley is a modest guy with a vision for one of downtown Blacksburg’s most prominent Main Street homes. Many folks call it Taylor’s Frames and Things, others refer to it as the Bennett-Pugh House, but to Riley it’s The Blacksburg Tavern, a labor of love, and soon to be downtown’s newest dining destination. Riley, a banker by trade, graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1989. While building a life in California as a banker, Blacksburg was calling him home to put down his roots. He found the Bennett-Pugh house for sale online and recognized it instantly. “I liked the idea of saving the Circa 1900 Victorian from demolition, relieving Mrs. Taylor from the obligation of ownership, and turning it into a public gathering place for the town and university,” said Riley. He also admits that he warmed quickly to the idea of being the second tavern owner in his family. “My direct ancestor, Eliphaz Riley, applied for a tavern license in Washington, D.C., before the capital was created in 1750,” said Riley. “I think the term tavern includes a connotation of history and atmosphere in a lively, less than formal setting, all attributes that I hope will apply to The Blacksburg Tavern.” Riley has partnered with Certified Executive Chef Jud Flynn of Blacksburg. “We

Blacksburg Tavern (Continued from previous page) are contemporaries from Blacksburg High, but we didn’t know each other growing up. Our parents are friends, so that’s what led me to him,” said Riley. Chef Flynn describes the menu as a taste of the world using local and regional ingredients as much as possible. When talking to Riley about the Tavern, his enthusiasm was overwhelming. The history of the Bennett-Pugh House has dictated every decision he’s made about its historic restoration. “I’m attempting to make the new business fit the old house rather than the opposite. Now that the Alexander Black House has been moved to Draper Road, the Bennett-Pugh House has become the oldest remaining residential home on Main Street within the original Sixteen Squares of Blacksburg,” said Riley. With its picket fence, front yard, and front porch, the house has become the last reminder of old Blacksburg when structures like this lined the dirt Main Street and picket fences were less about charm and more about keeping livestock from roaming into the street. Riley hopes the house will be celebrated and appreciated as a reminder of Blacksburg’s heritage for many generations to come. Riley says his plans for the interior are unprecedented in the region. “It’s a finishing touch I’m hanging onto as a secret for now.” Hint: It has something to do with art. What we do know is the inside will consist of a cozy bar room and three dining rooms downstairs. Upstairs there will be two additional dining rooms, ideal for public or private gatherings. Riley also plans for the Tavern to be “geared toward the entire public, from families with small children to retirees and everybody in between. It should be a special, sentimental sort of venue that will be enjoyable for everyone and an easy walk from the front door to other downtown happenings.” The Blacksburg Tavern is scheduled for a March/April opening.

Bus Travel Made Easy
Whether you’re hopping on a commuter bus to work, going to class, or visiting a friend in DC, the options for how you might make that commute are getting easier. Locally, Blacksburg Transit (BT) has added two 60-foot long articulated buses to its fleet. These buses are made of two separate, yet connected parts, allowing them to bend in the middle. Essentially, they’re accordions on wheels accommodating over 100 people, relieving overcrowding and allowing more people to leave their cars at home. The articulated buses use both electric and diesel power. As the vehicle speed increases, the bus transfers over from electric to diesel. They also have regenerative braking. When stopping or decelerating, vehicle energy is converted to electric energy and stored. Forty percent of the energy to accelerate the bus comes from the energy saved during regenerative braking. To make it easier to transfer from one mode of transportation to another, Virginia Tech and Blacksburg Transit are working together to build a multimodal transit facility on Virginia Tech’s campus. The facility will connect many forms of transportation including Blacksburg Transit, Smartway buses, bicycles, vehicles, Homeride, and more. “We envision that the Multi-Modal Transfer Center will create a hub for local and regional transit,” said BT Regulatory Manager Debra Swetnam. “The Town and University will be better served by an expanded and comprehensive transit operation while promoting alternative modes of non-automobile travel.” Complimenting an already successful regional transit system is a new doubledecker express system called the Megabus passing through Christiansburg from Knoxville, Tennessee to Washington, DC. The Megabus offers six daily departures from its arrival and departure location at Falling Branch Park and Ride Lot, exit 118A on I-81. In addition to low fares, Megabus’ environmentally-friendly buses have free Wi-Fi, power outlets and restrooms. (www.megabus.com) So whether you’re traveling throughout Blacksburg, around the New River Valley or to Washington, DC, ditch the car, hop on the bus and enjoy the ride.

Zumba
Exercise in Disguise Where in Blacksburg are college students and senior citizens partying together? How about in a Zumba class with Blacksburg Parks and Recreation. Zumba is a Latin-inspired fitness program fusing dance moves with Latin and international music in a fun atmosphere. Here in Blacksburg, Zumba includes participants from ages 18-75 dancing at their own pace and getting a workout at the same time. The program was started by celebrity fitness trainer, Beto Perez in Columbia in the mid-90’s. As Perez arrived to teach his usual aerobics class he realized he’d forgotten to bring music. He reached into his backpack and grabbed for his own personal music collection which happened to be traditional Latin Salsa and Merengue music. The upbeat Latin music paired with exercise and dance was a huge hit and Zumba was born. Jui-Ling Edwards is the Zumba instructor for Blacksburg Parks and Recreation. “Zumba is an exercise in disguise,” she says. “It’s a great way to get out, meet people, and work out in a party-like atmosphere.” For registration information see pages 33 and 43.
