Trained for Service Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad — neighbors helping neighbors

hen a kitten was trapped in

a storm drain, its owners called the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad. Squad members not only saw the opportunity to help, but an occasion to practice their skills in a real-time setting. “Of course we wanted to help the cat. But we could also practice confined space rescue in a practical way that helps us to keep our skills up,” David English, Rescue Squad Chief, said.

Rescue Open House Saturday, May 6, 1-5 p.m. 1300 Progress St. • Technical demonstrations, building and vehicle tours. • Face painting and activities for kids. • Meet your neighbors volunteering to help our community.

Training and practice keep Rescue For more information, visit www.facebook.com/blacksburgrescue. Squad volunteers prepared to meet any situation. Groups of special teams have expertise in a variety of areas—emergency medical rescue, vehicle rescue, swift water rescue, cave rescue and search and rescue. The squad has about 200 members who volunteered 75,000 hours last year. “That’s about eight years of man hours in one year,” English said. Rescue volunteers bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the squad. “Our volunteers are your neighbors, school mates, and church colleagues,” English said. “They’re also emergency room doctors, nurses, police officers and geoscientists, as well as students, retirees and parents.”

Chelsey Williams, BVRS member, WSLS 2017 Red Cross Medical Hero

Some volunteers channel their passion to help others. “People in our cave rescue group love caving and do it all the time,” English said. “Volunteering allows them to help people with the same interests.” Other volunteers develop their skills and interests through their work. “An EMS volunteer may go on a hike and then pursue training in search and rescue,” English explained.

Teamwork and collaboration with area law enforcement, public works, and neighboring jurisdictions is critical to providing a high level of service. “We have the training and experience so that if something happens, we’re ready for it,” English said. “We’re also building relationships so that we know what resources and experience everyone has, so that we can work together to keep our community safe.” About Town Town || www.blacksburg.gov www.blacksburg.gov 3 || About

Cooperation Builds a Vibrant Community

S

enior apartments might not seem like the most likely neighbors for a farm-totable restaurant, brewery, food center and a commercial kitchen incubator. But this vibrant combination has created tremendous buzz for the mixed-use, mixedincome redevelopment of the Old Price’s Fork Elementary School—and there is a waiting list for housing.

“People from the local food community and the New River Valley’s Aging in Place leadership team felt this would provide something different, necessary, and useful,” Elisabeth Willis, Blacksburg’s housing Stephanie Gilmore and Alice LoMascolo look in awe of the restoration work and community underway at the old Price’s Fork School. development project manager, said. “Taylor Hollow, the development company, has had more interest in the residential component than any other project they’ve done,” she said. Community support has been integral to this project’s success. More than 20 nonprofits and organizations along with representatives from the business community, helped earn $3 million in funding from the state’s Vibrant Communities Initiative and the Appalachian Regional Commission. “This was the first project the Vibrant Communities Initiative funded, and I think that speaks volumes about its energy,” Willis said. “The redevelopment combines so many different elements, like job creation, housing, local foods, and support for local farmers and businesses.” The first phase of housing, 16 senior apartments, will be completed this summer. The second phase of housing, as well as the commercial development side, will begin to open in late 2017 and throughout 2018. For more information on senior housing, contact Taylor Hollow Management at 540-838-2333. Interested in starting your own food-based business? A grant competition to help people get an entrepreneurial jump start at the Old Price’s Fork Food Center will be managed by Beans and Rice, Inc., a regional nonprofit. Beans and Rice will also manage the commercial incubator kitchen, which will be available for people to use, start, expand, or continue a food-related business. For more information on Beans and Rice, contact Eric Bucey at 540-633-6270.

A History of Parks and Recreation

T

here’s a reason you feel better after spending time in a park. Walking the dog, shooting some hoops, or having a picnic are some of life’s simple pleasures and the foundations of our happiest memories. Blacksburg has 500 acres of parkland and offers 1,000 recreational programs each year to engage, delight, and educate our community. The Parks and Recreation Department was established in 1969 after Blacksburg citizens asked the town to provide more recreation opportunities and then helped raise funds to purchase parkland. A timeline of Parks and Recreation services from a 1982 annual report shows the evolution of the department: 1968 Blacksburg Municipal Park was acquired. The Parks and Recreation Department was organized; an advisory board established; 1969 and the first parks director was hired. 1970 The golf course and swimming pool were purchased for $378,000. 1973 DeHart and McBryde Tot Lots were built; tennis courts were built at Municipal Park. Owens and Water Tower Tot Lots were built; additional tennis courts and lighting 1974 were added to Municipal Park. The sandlot field was built at Margaret Beeks; the softball field was built at the middle 1979 school; a community programs coordinator and naturalist was hired. Primrose Drive Park was built; the Community Center opened; a building supervisor 1981 was hired. 1992 The Aquatic Center opened. 1993 Hand in Hand Park was constructed. 1994 Kipps gym and field were built. 1999 Heritage Park was purchased. 2007 The Skate Park was built. 2008 Huckleberry Trail expansion north of the National Forest began. The Dog Park was created at the site of the old police shooting range on Toms Creek 2010 Road.

The 1982 report includes many of the programs we still enjoy today, like sandlot sports, self defense, summer camps, and nature programs. As the Parks and Recreation Department approaches its 50th anniversary it will continue to fulfill its mission to provide creative, innovative ways to help our community connect with each other and the world around us. This summer make plans to get out and enjoy all that Blacksburg Parks and Recreation has to offer.

Chords and Frets in Community Relations By day, John McKenna, provides website and IT support for the Town of Blacksburg in the Community Relations Office. Outside of work, he spends as much time as he can in his workshop, cutting, sanding, and varnishing handmade guitars. McKenna has worked for the town for about 15 years, and has seen firsthand how technology has changed the way citizens and government communicate. “I inherited an old website when we started,” McKenna said. McKenna has worked to expand and update the site as technology and user needs have evolved. His attention to detail ensuring web functionality translates well to the painstaking design skills needed to build guitars.

Each guitar takes about 80-100 hours to construct, and McKenna uses his technical acumen to apply a scientific approach to building guitars. “I weigh all the parts, the top, the bridge, and then everything gets recorded in my notebook.” Because every guitar is different, he likes to have a record of how to replicate something that worked. “There’s a lot of intuition that goes into building a guitar, and this helps make things a little more concrete.” “They say the 50th guitar is the magical one,” McKenna said. “The first one is playable and functional. It might not look or play that well, but before you know it, people call you a luthier.” Traditional materials people use for guitars include mahogany, spruce, walnut, rosewood, and ebony, but McKenna prefers non-traditional materials, like reclaimed barnwood. “It doesn’t matter what kind of wood is used. It is the construction of the guitar that’s most important.” A musical background helps, but isn’t required. “Leo Fender couldn’t play the guitar,” McKenna said. What’s more important is patience and tolerance for mistakes—a powerful mantra for any situation. “If you’re a perfectionist, this might be the wrong hobby for you,” he quipped.

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry assistive devices. Staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle; therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany those with special needs.

IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION

Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. It is difficult to find the perfect temperature for every participant on the bus. It is suggested those who are cold-natured bring sweater/coats and warm-natured dress in layers. Staff is happy to make adjustments to the temperature but safety is the primary concern. Let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted about any temperature adjustments.
