F
olks walking through downtown Blacksburg are treated to an array of color and unique creations on the walls of various businesses. What started off as an illegal act has turned into a positive, organized street art program for the community. Four years ago a teen was arrested for painting on the side of Ceritano’s Restaurant. The business owner, Nino Ceritano, liked the artwork and, hoping to find the artist, worked with Hart Fowler of 16 Blocks Magazine to host local street artists in a graffiti arts contest. The Ceritano’s artist never showed, but from that contest street artists, business owners, and town staff came together to form a group dedicated to combating graffiti with art. “Graffiti is considered a unique art form,” said Kim Kirk, Neighborhood Services Coordinator for the Town of Blacksburg. “We find there are less tags and incidents of vandalism.” Since 2009, fourteen pieces of street art have been composed, the first by Chris Pritchett at Market Square Park. His farmer and train provide an animated backdrop that greets Blacksburg Farmers Market customers, vendors, and visitors. The farmer and train pay homage to Blacksburg’s heritage and has become a centerpiece of downtown Blacksburg. Now Blacksburg has taken its love of street art a step further. Earlier this year, Montgomery County Tourism, the Blacksburg Partnership, 16 Blocks Magazine, and the Town of Blacksburg worked together to apply for and receive a Virginia Tourism LOVEwork grant. The LOVEwork pieces are the focal point of a social media campaign to share the message that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation. The mural was designed by local artist Den Bento who is a Mexican-Brazilian graphic designer, artist and art teacher who came to Blacksburg in the fall of 2011. Bento’s mural, located on the building adjacent to the Armory Gallery on Draper Road, is about love of community, nature, and the New River Valley. Incorporated into the mural is the Love Where You Live emblem, which brings attention to a campaign to engage Virginia Tech students and encourage them to embrace Blacksburg as their home. There are more murals and street art projects in the works, as well as an online tour of each one. Artists interested in becoming part of the street art project can contact Kim Kirk at 540-951-4347. What better way to celebrate Blacksburg, A Creative Village.

Not Your Grandmother’s Craft Show
T
he arts and crafts movement has a new face, and it is on display in Blacksburg. Now in its second year, The Burnt Creative Vintage and Indie Craft Market celebrates neo-craft culture, putting on a show that residents will “immediately recognize as unique,” says founder, Jessica Jones. You won’t find any needlepoint poodle pillows or crocheted toilet seat covers here. This market has a flavor that is distinctly, well, indie. Born in the age of consumerism, technology and recession, the indie craft movement surged forward to meet the demand for local, organic and recycled goods. Vintage fabrics find new life incorporated into exquisite quilts and purses. Locally grown herbs are blended with ethically sourced cocoa butter to produce chemical free soaps. Artists have left the galleries in order to serve a market desperate for unique, quality products in a world full of the cheap and uniform. Many of these artists have taken to the web to sell their crafts. For Jones, this is a problem. “There are a lot of makers in this part of Virginia, there are a lot of people making amazing products with no outlet to sell them… and I really
wanted to shine a light on these amazing people that are here in our backyard.” The Burnt Creative Vintage and Indie Craft Market truly is a community event, bringing in artists from the Blacksburg area as well as from neighboring counties. And these crafters know their stuff. In order to show at the market, vendors must be approved by a jury of professional artists. Jones notes that as important as it is to stay local, it is just as essential to adhere to the standards of quality and professionalism that the public expects from Burnt Creative. And this year, they are taking it to the next level. For more information on the Vintage and Indie Craft Market visit http:// burntcreative.com/wp/the-market/.

A Community Celebration
T
he Independence Day Celebration has been a Blacksburg tradition for as long as anyone can remember. Though the venues and musicians have changed and the fireworks have gotten bigger and better, the celebration remains true to its small-townAmerica spirit. With a clash of symbols and a whirl of flags, the Independence Day Parade will depart from the old Blacksburg Middle School property and will run through downtown. Along its route, civic groups will be passing out candy to eager children, and adults. If you need a break from the heat and tired feet, The Lyric Theatre will offer free tickets to a classic American film. When it’s time for dinner, head over to Municipal Park and grab a bite from one of the many food vendors and enjoy the patriotic rhythms of the Blacksburg Community Band. Let the kiddos enjoy their independence at one of the park’s three playgrounds. Since its Bicentennial Celebration in 1998, Blacksburg has put on the largest pyrotechnics display in the New River Valley. As the daylight fades, nestle down on your picnic blanket and watch the fireworks show amidst the smell of blackend hot-dogs and black powder. Around the country, people celebrate our nation’s independence with sparklers, cookouts and the red, white and blue. But, most people can agree that the most important tradition is gathering with friends and family. Pat Marlowe, a Blacksburg resident, has been attending the events for over 15 years. “The event has such a community feel. We would meet up with a group to watch the parade and bring our children. Now some bring their grandchildren. It has become such a family time. It’s part of the fabric of our family,” says Marlowe. Come make Blacksburg’s Independence Day Celebration part of your annual traditions. This year’s events start on July 4 at 2 p.m. with a parade followed by a free movie at The Lyric Theatre, both sponsored by the Mt. Tabor Ruritan Club. At 6 p.m., come over to Municipal Park to enjoy music from the Blacksburg Community Band and stay for the Town of Blacksburg’s fireworks display at 9 p.m.

Sounds of History
A
n illicit kiss leads to a courthouse shootout. A blast at a mine kills 12 miners. With his fiddle, bow, and voice, Jack Hinshelwood, Director of the Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail, will share stories of some of southwest Virginia’s colorful and sometimes tragic moments during this free performance. His original ballad tells the story of the Hillsville Courthouse shooting. It all started when a boy kissed another boy’s girl which started a chain of events that lead to the death of a judge, sheriff, Commonwealth Attorney, juror, and witness. In another sorrowful tune, Hinshelwood, brings to life the Great Valley Anthracite Mine Disaster in McCoy where 12 miners died in 1946. Hinshelwood’s performances do more than take people back in time; his music takes audiences around the world with a fiddle tour. He shares the fiddle styles of various cultures, including the old time Appalachian many in the area know and love. “This region has such an interesting melting pot of people here bringing different forms of music,” says Hinshelwood. “It is a fascinating study of music and brings together the cultural mix of the area.” This Historic Lecture event is sponsored by the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation and Smithfield Plantation.
Rescue To Get a New Building
F
or 63 years, the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad has served the emergency medical needs of the town by running calls from their building on Progress Street. Soon the rescue squad will have a new building with more space and better access to the main routes through the town and county. The town is in the process of buying property on the corner of Progress Street and Patrick Henry Drive for the purpose of building a new rescue building. Rescue as outgrown its current location. Currently, specialized equipment has to be stored elsewhere in town and there is not enough parking for members or during special events. “The town and rescue squad have long recognized the need for and planned on a new station; the land purchase is a major milestone reflecting many years of collaboration between the two entities,” said Rescue Chief John O’Shea. The contract of the sale of the land is contingent on rezoning of the land. The filing of the rezoning application is anticipated for June. Home Health Forms Available If you did not receive a home health form from the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, please contact rescue at 540-961-1189. This form when filled out and placed on your refrigerator, helps rescue know your medical history in case you are unable to convey that information. For assistance filling out the form, a member of the rescue squad would be happy to call on residents at home. Assistance is also available at the rescue squad’s open house on June 15, 1-4 pm, 200 Progress Street.

FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
The Senior Center has a wheelchair accessible bus with room to carry assistive devices. Staff is unable to personally assist individuals beyond loading and unloading the vehicle; therefore, we require a caretaker or aide to accompany those with special needs.
IMPORTANT TRIP INFORMATION
Vans will be available to load no earlier than 30 minutes prior to departure unless otherwise specified in the trip description. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure. It is difficult to find the perfect temperature for every participant on the bus. It is suggested those who are cold-natured bring sweater/coats and warm-natured dress in layers. Staff is happy to make adjustments to the temperature but safety is the primary concern. Let the driver know at a time when he is not distracted about any temperature adjustments.
