Congratulations, Jack! The Community Center’s Jack Leahy to retire this spring
O
ne thing Jack Leahy is looking
forward to is having more time to exercise. Despite spending much of his time at the Blacksburg Community Center, he often finds he is too busy for his favorite hobbies. That will all change this spring, as he retires from his position as community center supervisor, program manager, and assistant director. “I’ve worn a lot of hats,” Leahy said. When Leahy joined Parks and Recreation 15 years ago, the Community Center’s gym was in bad shape. “There was an old rubber floor worn down to the cement and wooden backboards.” He advocated for a new wood floor, new lighting, and new glass backboards. Along with facility updates, Leahy worked to diversify the center’s programming. “Being in a university town allows us to offer things you might not expect in Southwest Virginia,” he said. In addition to athletic programming, the center’s also offers classes in belly dancing, foreign languages, dog obedience, photography and songwriting. He has also expanded the exceedingly popular summer camp programs and increased facility rentals—everything from college and athletic events to art festivals and community and religious groups. “We’re busy all the time,” Leahy said. “If I had four more gyms I could fill them right now.” As he counts the days to retirement, Leahy’s greatest hope is that he will leave things a little better than when he came. He also knows that more than anything, he’ll miss the people he sees every day. “I’m going to miss the people terribly. Employees, volunteers, and regular visitors who use the facility every day. I’ve felt welcome since I came to Blacksburg. It has been fun to work with everyone.” Leahy’s hard work and unflagging enthusiasm will also be missed. “Jack is the most positive person, and he sees the good in everyone. His dedication has helped the Parks and Recreation Department bring a higher level of service to our community,” Dean Crane, director of Parks and Recreation, said. A Community for Every Age Starting a conversation about aging in place
Wyour golden years? If you’re
here do you imagine spending
like most people, you want to age in place—to stay in the home you’ve loved and cared for as long as you are able. To make aging in place possible, it is important to think ahead about things like home modifications, transportation access, and healthcare services. One critical step in this process is to start talking with loved ones about your plans to age in place.

George Waskowicz, a senior in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech, shows Helen Capobianco where her sewing machine is broken during a repair café at the Habitat ReStore in Christiansburg.
A housing survey performed by the Aging in Place Leadership Team found that many people would only make home improvements after they had a health crisis--not before. But the stress of managing a major home construction project while you are sick might be too much to bear. “You can’t just assume that your home will be safe and accessible if and when you have health problems,” said Carol Davis, Blacksburg sustainability manager who serves on the New River Valley Aging in Place leadership team. Having a plan for how you might run errands, maintain your home, Have you thought about the five and manage extra expenses can help prevent essentials to age in place? unwelcome surprises. “Losing your self-sufficiency 1) Housing can creep up on you, and the results can be 2) Health and Wellness financially and emotionally devastating,” Davis 3) Transportation added. 4) Personal Finance 5) Social Support and To help people start these conversations, the Connections Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech is offering a class to help New River Valley residents begin the process. Blacksburg is also working toward earning an Age Friendly Community certification from AARP, and wants to ensure that town plans and services can align with the changing needs of all its residents. “When communities take steps to be more age-friendly, it doesn’t just benefit retirees—good, accessible design improves the community for everyone,” Davis explained. About Town | www.blacksburg.gov
More Than a Ride BT Access paratransit service brings the community to all riders
listening to K-92 birthday scams Gbest during hislikes commute. “Or Lady Gaga,” he adds, as eorge Rogers
he catches his dad’s skeptical look. “And NPR, that’s good!” For Rogers, listening to the radio on his way to work is a big deal. It is part of his day when he’s most independent—and that independence wouldn’t be possible without BT Access. BT Access is the paratransit service of Blacksburg Transit, which supplements regular bus service for people with disabilities. Passengers need to apply to use the BT Access service, but it is available for people with permanent disabilities as well as temporary impairments. Qualified riders can schedule regular trips on weekdays within town limits. This may include shopping, work, or doctor’s appointments but riders can also go to the library, Moss Center, or the movies. “For many people, this service is a lifeline,” Jenny Mills, BT Access supervisor, said. “If you have mobility challenges, a ride can open up the whole world.” Rogers can’t drive due to physical and mobility issues, and the closest bus stop is inconvenient to his home. His family could help him get back and forth from his job at Virginia Tech’s Math Emporium, but that would require shuffling their own busy work schedules. The independence the service gives Rogers is invaluable, as the service gives him freedom and autonomy he wouldn’t have otherwise. “Work is probably the only place George goes by himself, because he knows the route and has been doing it for so long,” Bob Rogers, George’s father, said. But it’s more than just rides, it is about relationships. Riding BT Access, Rogers has befriended every driver on his route, and meets countless students at the Math Emporium who appreciate his humor and infectious enthusiasm. “I’m pretty famous,” he explains. For more information about BT Access, including how to determine eligibility, please visit www.btransit.org/btaccess.
BHS Senior Vivian Lawrence and her dad Sheridan Bell built and donated the Little Free Library in Market Square Park. Thank You!

MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE
JEFF KLEPPIN Golf Shop Supervisor 540-961-1137 • jkleppin@blacksburg.gov The golf course continues to undergo renovations in anticipation of a Spring 2018 grand re-opening. Construction began in August 2017. Aspen Golf performed the work that included the re-grassing of greens and fairways. All the tee complexes were rebuilt to provide multiple tee decks to accommodate all levels of players. Bunkers on the course were either removed, replaced, or renovated and now have state-of-the-art drainage capability and improved playability. In addition, a two hole, short game practice area was constructed to provide a practice and teaching facility near the pro shop. As the new golf turf establishes itself over the winter months, additional work will be done to prepare the course for a spring opening. During this time, in order to protect the new grasses, the golf course will remain closed to pedestrian traffic. Please use the walking trails adjacent to Palmer Drive, Cohee Road, and Willard Drive. Details about daily rates, annual pass options and the scheduled re-opening will be announced on at www.golfthehill.com, www.facebook.com/golfthehill and www.twitter.com/golfthehill.

However, if you are traveling with someone, it is allowed to save the one seat next to you. • Your comfort is important to us. However, it is difficult to find the perfect temperature for everyone. We suggest that you dress in layers.
