PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hello Members, I would like to start this report by first thanking the members who took the time to vote in our first biennial election for The Board of Directors of the Club. There was one change in the voting results with Ange Humphries replacing Bob Vincent. On behalf of Board colleagues, Management and members I thank Bob for all the many years he put into his position as Director. He was always very passionate about the Club, community and members and will continue to be seen around Club and area. I welcome Ange to the Board. Ange has a journalist degree and is self employed. Ange will add a new dimension to our team. I was elected unopposed President at the AGM. This is indeed an honour and I can’t express how emotional I feel when I see the faith and trust you show in me as your President. It is not always an easy job but with your support we can tackle the hard tasks and hopefully with Board and Management make the right decisions for the benefit of members and the long term success of the Club. Congratulations to the elected Executive. Jack Miller, who was elected Snr Vice President, Terry O’Loughlin Vice President and Jim Buckley (unopposed) as Treasurer. I rely on this team for critical matters and thank them for their commitment. The Board looks forward to working with Management and staff. I am also letting you know that as Talk of the Town (Club Journal) is available on the Club website it is no longer going to be posted out with financial report each year and the past request for this no longer exists. If you are not familiar with Club Website and would really like this copy sent to you with Annual Report you will need to contact membership either by phone, letter or email and have your request added to the new list. The Board has a lot on its plate over the next two years with Sports Centre of Excellence and Over 55’s Resort and of course club matters. I realise all our decisions do not please everyone but please keep in mind that we make all decisions on the information we have and what we think will benefit the majority of members, Club and community and to keep the Club viable moving forward. The DA for the earthworks of the Sporting Precinct was approved by council on 3rd May so we are ready to move on. We hired a Marketing firm to evaluate what people would like to see in our resort units and what amenities they require. Almost 1000 members filled out the survey and we thank them for their input. We still have a lot of work to do here but I will keep you informed. Neale, myself and Directors were invited to the Blacktown City Council Breakfast at Westpoint where Mayor Stephen Bali and Council General Manager Kerry Robinson outlined their vision for Blacktown going forward. It was a brilliant presentation and I was wishing that I was 20 years younger to see it all. Our Workers Clubs will be an important part of the landscape as we move with new ideas, new members and diversify. Little steps will ensure that Workers is a big part of Blacktown City. I attended, along with the Board members, The Police Officer of the Year awards, earlier in the year which was organised by Rotary. The Club is proud to be involved with this night as we work closely with the Local Police Command and thank all the police officers for working to keep the area safe for community and our members. On behalf of the Police Officers nominated we donated to the following local communities: Salvation Army, Smith Family, St. Vincent de Paul, William Rose School and Grace’s Place. I visited these organisations with Rotary and delivered the cheques from our members. They were all very appreciative.
One of the recipients of these cheques was William Rose School at Seven Hills. I was invited to visit the school to see first hand the amazing work they do. I found this to be a heart wrenching experience as I saw some of the disabilities these young people endure while tackling every day activities and I was so impressed with the passion, dedication and care the teachers show their students as they teach them to cope with everyday life. I am telling you of this so you can see where some of your Clubs Grant money goes. I have been attending many of the Saturday night shows with Terry and his wife and I am impressed with the calibre of entertainment that Liz is booking for the Diamond Showroom. Good numbers are attending and enjoying the entertainment at a reasonable cost for a good night out. Why not check out the coming shows and secure your seats. The Blacktown City Local Business Awards were held in our Club recently. The Diamond Showroom was full as many finalists and friends attended to hear the winner announced in each category. I am pleased to say that “Gi” who took over Workers Haircare last year was a finalist in the Hairdressing category. Unfortunately “Gi” did not win but to be a finalist in this very popular category was no mean feat. Many additional beauty services have been added and I congratulate her on her efforts and success. I attended the Jnr Cricket Presentation recently. These young cricketers didn’t take our any grand finals this season but the 14/1’s made it through and 14/1’s and 16/1’s made it through to the semi finals. All teams received plenty of accolades and encouragement from their coaches and managers on their sportsmanship and passion as they keep learning and moving forward. Thank you to their committee, coaches and Managers who put in many hours of their own time so these young players can enjoy the game. Thank you to everyone involved in all our sporting teams as your commitment is essential and really appreciated. Good luck to all our winter sporting teams as your compete under “Workers” brand. Snr Cricket had 3 teams in Grand Finals. 5th and 9th Grade won their Grand Final games and 6th Grade were runners up. Great result. Our Baseball teams had 4 teams make the Grand Finals. premiers Under 13’s and Under 17/1’s won their Grand Finals. Both the Women’s teams were semi finalists. Well done. On behalf of the Board and Management I would like to pass on our condolences to family and friends who have lost loved ones. Wally Johnson and Frank Sullivan were VIP members who we lost recently. They were strong supporters of the Club. Wally and his wife Dawn were always seen hand in hand around the Club and area. 30 members are eligible for VIP membership this year. This is earnt by being a member of the Club for 50 continuous years and letters will be forwarded to ask if they wish to take up this offer. Congratulations and thank you for your dedication. I hope you continue to enjoy your time at any of our three Clubs. When you see me in the Club I am happy to take the time to talk and discuss anything that is bothering you. Take care. Until next time, Keep Smiling and be kind to each other

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Hello Members; Since my last report the 2017 bi-ennial Board of Directors election was held. I would like to congratulate the successful Directors elected by the members. In this election Bob Vincent was unsuccessful in being reappointed as a Director. Bob served on the Board with great distinction for just under 10 years and I would like to thank Bob for his great contribution and assistance during this time. In saying that, may I welcome Ange Humphries to the Board and look forward to her contribution to the future of our club group. Congratulations to the Board Executive that was elected by the members at the AGM in April. • • • •

Renovation works at the Main Club that are now being undertaken include; • Toilets in both Impressions and Jack McNamara lounge and the inclusion of parent’s rooms. • Upgrade to tables and chairs in the Reg McGrath lounge are underway and should be installed in the coming months. We are also looking at concepts, designs and ideas for the Jack McNamara lounge. I am happy to report to members that the first Development Application for the bulk earthworks for our new Sporting Fields on our land adjacent to Walters Rd was approved by Blacktown City Council in May 2017. Work has now commenced. The DA for the grandstands and other facilities is due to follow. Works on the preparation of the DA for the first stage and masterplan of the over 55’s resort are still being undertaken with the hope that the DA will be lodged in early 2018. We are currently undertaking extensive marketing on this proposed development to ensure that the model that is chosen is the most attractive and viable. More information sessions for members are planned for this year to keep you all up to date on the progress. Again, I remind you of our Responsible Service of alcohol policy under the NSW Liquor Act 2007 and the various signs throughout all our clubs indicating the Code of Practice for the supply and service of alcohol. This is the law and our staff are all trained and are following the requirements of legislation when enforcing these rules. To those members who lost loved ones my condolences.

GENEROUS SPIRIT LIVES ON THROUGH WORKERS CLUB GROUP
2017 marks the year for our community moving forward with another great initiative. It has been a long-standing commitment from the Blacktown Workers Club Group to financially award the winners from the Blacktown Police Officer of the Year Awards night. As a result of legislative changes these donations will now be allocated to local charities and beneficiaries. Kay Kelly President and the Blacktown Workers Club Board of the Directors came to a decision with both the Blacktown LAC and the Blacktown Rotary Cub to use the prize money from the Blacktown Police Officer of the Year Awards towards local charities/beneficiaries in the Blacktown community as part of the Club Grants initiative. There was a total of $3000 spread amongst 5 local charities/beneficiaries: $1,000 William Rose Special School $500 The Salvation Army – Blacktown Corps $500 St Vincent de Paul Society NSW Parramatta Central Council $500 The Smith Family $500 Homicide Victims Support Group (Aust) Inc. – to go to Graces Place Marianne Youness - Principal of William Rose Special School said the funds will be used to purchase assistive technology devices for the students including communication supports or applications for smart tablets/iPads or go towards the expenditure of their smart boards to support the communication program as part of our entire school program. Technology assists students to access the curriculum and supports learning as being engaging and accessible to all. Captain Bill Geracia from the Blacktown Salvation Army was more than thankful on receiving the donation. At the time of this donation their food pantry was running low. Captain Bill also said that the Blacktown Salvation Army is operated and succeeds on donations like these from the community. Captain Bill and his team will be able to serve those who are doing tough in our
14
workersclub.com.au
community. The donation will be used to refill and supply their emergency food pantry that operates on their site. This food pantry helps those who are seeking food because they have no food in their food pantry to feed their family. They supply 3-5 days of food for the whole family, as well as supply basic toiletry items such as toothpaste, shampoo, diapers, etc. Anna Ashenden - Social Justice and Community Engagement Manager of St Vincent de Paul’s said that this donation would help to continue the critical work St Vincent does within the Blacktown community. Anna said the will be directing the donation towards the new Blacktown Community Hub, which is located in a purpose-built space at the back of the Blacktown Vinnies Shop. This Hub provides emergency relief, assessment and support for people experiencing disadvantage in the Blacktown/Mt Druitt area. Catherine Cavill from The Smith Family said that the donation will make a real difference to the young Australians in need within the Blacktown community. This donation will be going towards The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program. This Learning for Life Program is a long-term, effective and highly targeted approach to improving the educational outcomes of disadvantaged young Australians. Students on the program receive a combination of financial assistance, personal support and access to a range of learning support and mentoring programs e.g. literacy and numeracy, career and post-school pathways, digital and financial literacy initiatives for parents/carers.
CLUB FEATURE Gary Raymond APM, OAM (Ret’d.) Dip. VET from Grace’s Place said that they were very thankful for such a generous donation. All funds are currently going towards the construction of the world first facility that is Grace’s Place. Every brick counts. Grace’s Place will offer a safe and secure refuge (with professional counsellors on site) supporting those going through the devastation and grief of a loved one’s murder. This is only the beginning Blacktown City Police LAC, Rotary Club of Blacktown City and Blacktown Workers Club Group will continue moving forward together the support charities and beneficiaries such as these so they can continue to do all the wonderful work they do.
The primary purpose of Grace’s Place is to provide a unique place of healing and restoration for children traumatised by homicide, It will be a place where they may be guided to believe in themselves and their future. Being built in NSW, on land made available by Blacktown City Council. The Centre will be named in honour of Grace Lynch, mother of Anita Cobby and will include residential and counselling facilities. Grace’s Place will be operated and administered by The Homicide Victims Support Group (Aust) Inc. (HVSG), which has been operating since 1993. Founders of the Homicide Victims Support Group were the parents of 9 year old Ebony Simpson and 26 years old Anita Cobby ¬who were motivated to help other families survive and recover after the horrors of not only the loss of their children but also the aftermath. This includes the ongoing requirements to be interviewed / spend time with police, courts, media and community interest personnel etc. Members of the HVSG were surveyed and asked what Grace’s Place could do for family members and their children, with their responses being used to develop the preliminary plans for Grace’s Place. It became evident that there is an urgent need for a residential trauma centre aimed specifically at children between the ages of 3 -18. With there being nothing else like this in Australia or overseas that can be relied upon as a model for such a centre feedback, support and planning are extremely important in making sure that Grace’s Place becomes what is needed for families in these traumatic times.

SPORTING BODIES REPORTS MENS GOLF CLUB
The 2017 year is now into full swing; however we have experienced some inclement weather along the way with the Fox Hills game on 26 March being washed out resulting in the final of the Cock of the Walk, between Neil Morris and Jeffry Roodkerk, being postponed to a later date. In other completed events: • The Neale Vaughan Trophy was won by Colin Wilson & Bill Wakim. • The Merv Pell Cup was contested on 07 May at Campbelltown Golf Course and despite some good efforts by Shaun Fulton and Peter Lipovic, the Men’s Golf Club finished fourth. The events to be held in the next few months include: July / August - Foursomes Championships (2 Rounds) | September - November - Single Championships (4 Rounds) For any membership or general enquiries please contact John Grayling on 0415 803 617. Bill Wakim - Publicity Officer
WOMENS BOWLING CLUB
What a frustrating few months we have had with heat and so much rain disrupting the championships and the pennants’ I think everyone was glad to see the pennants over this year. All teams tried their hardest, the grade 3 did the best coming in second place to Castle Hill. Jan Layton was nominated by the board of Blacktown Workers Club as a contender for the 2017 Chifley Sports Award, and received a certificate for Exceptional Sporting Accomplishments by Ed Husec MP. Come along and join us at bowls for a good way of meeting people and getting out in the fresh air. We have coaching on Saturday mornings, ring Jan Layton on 96711461 if interested. Our bowls day is Wednesday at 9.30am and mixed on Saturday at 1pm. enquiries please contact John Grayling on 0415 803 617. Bill Wakim - Publicity Officer Two of our ladies entered the Inaugural Sister City Trophy at Quirindi with two of our men bowlers and they won. tCongratulations Chris Harloff and Robyn Eishaver. It was sponsored by Blacktown Council. Audrey Schultz - Publicity Officer

STOCK SPORT
The Stock Sport Group has taken part in an Interstate Competition on the 25th of March at the Austrian Club in Mawson ACT. Our Workers 1 team, Herbert, Barry (C), Bernadette and Boris, were successful in performing well on the day and winning the Interstate competition with one player in that team in their second competition. We then attended a national Competition on the 8-9th of April at the same club in Canberra. This competition was over 2 rounds in which everybody played each other and the team with the most wins, then better percentage decided the results. The No.1 team of Barry, Christian, Boris and Miro managed to finish the competition on equal points with second place however they had a better percentage. To get into third place however we did have to beat the team that was in second place to push them down to 4th with our team winning it on the last end of the tournament. Barry O’Donnell
