Hello Members,

It is hard to believe that this will be the last President’s Report for this year as the next journal comes out in February 2023. Please check out this journal for our upcoming entertainment, promotions and to stay in touch with what’s happening at our clubs to get you through the festive season.

It has been a very busy year with many meetings to finalise and consolidate the building renovations at the main Club. We have also been busy working on ideas and plans for our ILUs which we hope to commence next year now our DA has been approved.

Our Main Club renovations are now complete, and I hope you are as happy as we are with the results.

Congratulations to our lucky Member, James May, who won the Harley Davidson last month. You are the envy of many Members. This was a very popular promotion with lots of entries and we will continue to look to do similar promotions into the future.

Our staff will be extremely busy with the events coming up for the festive season so join in where you can and enjoy the celebrations.

Congratulations to our Manager, Willie McLean, who did an amazing job as he represented the Club in the “Stars of Western Sydney Cancer Council Fundraiser”. You did so well Willie and made us very proud. We will be seeing you in the next season of “Dancing with the Stars” on TV if you keep that up.

I would like to thank my Board Colleagues, Management and as always, our Staff, on how well they work together to achieve the results required to keep you our Members happy and proud of their Clubs.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I send our deepest sympathy to all our Members who have lost loved ones or friends. I know it is a sad time but remember there is always friends or our Welfare Officers, Harold and Tina, at the Club who are happy to talk to you.

I speak for my Board and myself as I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. CEO’S REPORT

Hello again Members,

As we close out 2022 and look forward to the new beginnings of 2023, we have been reflecting on our year that was. We have been remembering the thankfulness that we have for our Staff, our community and to you our Members, for your continued patronage and loyalty with your Clubs since our industry collectively reopened over a year ago.

I thank your Staff for their passion and commitment for our Clubs and to you our Members, as these post-covid employment times remain challenging for our ability to recruit new people into our Club and indeed our Industry.

We see this challenge beginning to ease in 2023 and in the meantime, we will continue working hard to seek out new starters and continue to develop our own talent internally to be ready for the future.

In 2022 we completed the $15m renovation project at Campbell Street and just like you, we have been enjoying the ‘new’ club with its light, bright and spacious environment. The new Blue Gum Café and new furniture throughout the ground floor food and beverage areas are examples. It has been a ‘marathon’ of sorts, to get to us all here in the current position we enjoy of having new facilities and services. Your positivity, feedback and support confirm our belief that we are well-placed for the future here in Blacktown.

Parkside Lifestyle Community had its first series of welcome events where those Members who had registered to attend received introductory information relating to the independent living units and how the village would look and operate from the team we’ve engaged to help us get started in our journey.

We are working our way through the post-DA approval processes and we look forward to construction commencing around April 2023. If this timeline holds steady, then we would expect to welcome the first of the 94 stage one residents to the precinct in time for Christmas 2024.

Workers Hubertus is coming through a very lengthy period of roadworks; water pipe works and rain disruptions as those essential services are upgraded as part of the incoming Nancy-Bord Walton International Airport precinct. There are exciting times ahead as we push forward with plans for the future of the Club and land at Luddenham. I thank the Hubertus Membership for their patience during this time.

I take this opportunity on behalf of myself, the Management Team, all our Staff and the Board of Directors, to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy, and prosperous 2023.

My condolences are with those Members who have lost loved ones and friends during this time, and as always, please take care of yourselves, and of each other.

Just in time for our refreshed Blue Gum Café to launch, the Workers club are excited to have a brand-new Executive Chef in town –Steve Koeing. Chef Steve is here to bring a new take on our mouth-watering menus in Eucalyptus Dining, Blue Gum Café and Mango Tango Thai.

Chef Steve comes from a background of food. Whether cooking delicious family meals at home or being involved with food businesses, Chef Steve has grown up around cooks, chefs and foodies, which instilled the love of food in him from a young age.

Starting from a humble Kitchen Hand at Pelican Beach Resort and working up to an executive chef within the hotel sector, Steve offers his wealth of experience, knowledge, and skill in running a kitchen, setting the culture on our food philosophy and making delicious, yummy food!

Chef Steve cooks by a simple cooking philosophy; “Never serve what you wouldn’t eat yourself”. Workers also agrees that food should please the tastebuds and excite all five senses, making Chef Steve the perfect fit for our restaurants.

In the 2022 ClubGRANTS funding round coordinated via Blacktown City Council, the Board of Directors of Workers Lifestyle Group contributed $258,161 to 18 different local community projects.

These projects were selected based on a criteria of supporting as many of the Blacktown community as possible, as well as meeting our commitment to contributing $500,000 over five years to Domestic & Family Violence.

The presentation ceremony, hosted by Blacktown City Council at Workers Blacktown on Monday 29th August, was attended by President, Kay Kelly; CEO, Morgan Stewart; our Board of Directors and Workers staff.

Supporting Blacktown Youth Impacted by Domestic Violence through Youth In-search

Peer to Peer Program

Workers Lifestyle Group gave support to the Vardys Road Public School Parents & Citizens association with a donation to their laundry facilities project – supplying and installing laundry facilities.

In addition to providing a change of clothes to students who arrive at school in dirty uniforms, they are now able to send them home with their own uniform that has been cleaned.

“This simple project is having a big impact on our students and families who may not have access to facilities at home.”

The School Lunch Box Program is run by not-for-profit Koh-Hajer Youth Development Organisation.

The program is staffed by volunteers whose aim is to create lunch boxes full of nutritional food that is culturally acceptable to Sudanese and South Sudanese school children who come from financially disadvantaged families. The lunch boxes will be provided to these children five days a week during the school term and will run for a full 12 months.

Workers Lifestyle Group donated $10,000 to fund this amazing project. This means that primary school students will receive a school lunch box packed with nutritional fruits, vegetables, and snacks.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and by doing so equips them to participate more meaningfully in society.

The Clontarf Foundation Ross Kelly Cup Rugby League Carnival was held on Wednesday 21st September at Workers Sports. The number of boys in attendance was approximately 600 from 47 academies throughout Australia.

Congratulations to the Ross Kelly Cup Winners: Singleton, which was something of a surprise as they would have been seeded in the bottom 10.

This year’s RKC was a celebration of 10 Years of Clontarf in NSW which coincided with the first Ross Kelly Cup.

Better Foundation was created in 2016 to support Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals by working with local communities to raise over $900,000 of vital funds for state-of-the-art equipment, world’s best practice research and advanced education for doctors, nurses and clinical staff.

Workers Lifestyle Group is proud to be able to continue support for our local hospitals with donations from our most recent ClubGRANTS funding round of $57,782 towards the purchase of vital equipment including Bedside Ultrasound Machines (moveable scanners) to enable foetal monitoring for safer pregnancies and births at Blacktown Hospital.

ClubGRANTS is one of Australia’s largest grant programs, providing more than $100 million in funds each year to a variety of worthy causes across NSW, including charities, sporting organisations and not-for-profit community groups.

We continue to work with Western Sydney Diabetes to support their ongoing strategy to address the growing impact of diabetes in our community. Diabetes is the world’s fastest growing chronic condition and is becoming the largest burden of disease in Australia.

• Every five minutes a person is diagnosed with diabetes

• The number of people with diabetes in Australia is three times higher than 25 years ago

• One in four Australians aged over 25 years has diabetes or pre-diabetes.

Workers Lifestyle Group initiatives include:

• having low-carb ready to eat meals for staff

• providing CSIRO based menu options at the new Blue Gum Café

• providing SiSU Health Stations that offer free health checks to assist with the early detection of Type 2 diabetes or the potential for that condition.

Heart of the Nation is an initiative that promotes the locations of Automated External Defibrillators – commonly known as AED's in the community, and recognises those businesses, organisations, workplaces and community groups that have an AED on site ready to be shared with the community in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest taking place on or nearby their premises.

Workers Lifestyle Group purchased an additional 10 of these vital pieces of life-saving equipment for our venues and for all company-owned vehicles – and registered their availability via the Heart of the Nation app.

WELFARE REPORT

Hello Members,

As Welfare Officers, we are here to assist our members in times of need. We like to be informed about our members, especially those that are unwell or are in hospital, or simply wanting to talk to someone. We visit members that are in nursing homes and represent the club at funerals of members who have sadly passed away.

If you know of anyone who is unwell and could do with a friendly visit, please call Member Services on 9830 0600. The following support groups are held at Workers Blacktown for carers and those affected with the following:

• Stroke: every Monday from 10:00am to 12:00pm

• Dementia Support Group: fortnightly on Thursdays from 10:30am to 12:30pm

Every Wednesday at Workers Blacktown in Campbell Street, the club offers free information stalls for diabetes prevention, healthy ageing, seniors’ rights, Meals on Wheels, ServiceNSW government rebates, SydWest Multicultural Services and Red Cross Lifeblood. There is a different organisation set up in the Grand Foyer each week.

On behalf of the President, Board of Directors, Management and Staff, I wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the families of the following members who have recently passed away.

To all our members that are not well or are in hospital, we wish you all a speedy recovery.

Our Group profit before tax as at 31 October 2022 is $3,532,659 which is higher than budgeted expectations and higher than the same financial period last year (2021).
