About Community

Breaking The Chain! Domestic violence is Blacktown's "Cancer" and according to statistics Blacktown local government area has the highest number of domestic violence incidents in all of NSW. In the warmer months domestic violence incidents spike in the local area so it was appropriate that as the weather warmed,

We stood up and said stop! Almost 500 people gathered for our annual White Ribbon breakfast that specifically brought over 200 local school children to hear about the terrible impact domestic violence has in our community, and showed them that they can BREAK THE CHAIN! This annual event is one of our proudest achievements with more than $50,000 raised over recent years and the awareness in our community is at an all time high. At the Workers, we simply say domestic violence in any form is not acceptable and we stand up and speak out for those that need our help.

About Keeping You Informed

President’s Report Hello Members, The festive season is now over and if you are like me you have had plenty going on with Club activities, functions and family. I am fortunate that I have a large close family and appreciate the time I spend with them. I hope you had the opportunity to spend some time with family and friends. WOW. What a great day our Children’s 2018 Xmas Party turned out to be. Many new events and activities for the children to see and enjoy. Our first time at Workers Hubertus was an amazing success thanks to the hard work of Emma, Andrew and the committee. Thank You to the staff and sporting club volunteers who helped make this day so good. There are a few small items that need to be addressed for next year but overall I will say it again. WOW. Unfortunately some powerful gusts of which we had no control made an appearance but we didn’t let this spoil the day. Thank you to all our members who phoned or sent emails congratulating the Club. Our Seniors Xmas Party is always a big event on the Club calendar with tickets almost selling out on the first day.

4

I also joined fellow Directors at Bowman Hall where we assisted with assistance at the Blacktown Rotary/Inner Wheel Seniors Xmas Lunch for people in local nursing homes and community. This is a lovely day for everyone and we enjoy being part of the many

volunteers that make this day memorable and special for those who attend. It was a proud night for myself and fellow Directors to attend the Club Soccer 50th Anniversary in November. Congratulations to everyone concerned in reaching this milestone. It was great to see the memorabilia on display and reminisce. Thank you to everyone who has devoted time and helped out the many players for their part in building up this Club over the last 50 years. You have all contributed in making Workers Soccer the strong, successful Club it is today. Congratulations to Intra Club Sports who also celebrated 50 years. We are very lucky to have so many volunteers who keep our Sporting Clubs going. A very special event for me and the Board each year is to host the Foundation-Old Tin Shed and VIP’s Members Xmas Lunch which was held early December. All these members have given over 50 years to our Club and who have given us the foundation on which we build our dreams for future generations. It is such a joy to see them reminiscing and I feel so proud to be with them. Thank you all so much. I would like to remind our members that there is always something available for all of you and/or your children to participate in and enjoy and make new friendships. There is no excuse for anyone to be lonely, you just need to make the enquiry into something you could enjoy with our Sporting Clubs. Why not give it a try?

You may already be aware of our changes to our Management structure. Congratulations to Kylie Canning who is now our Venue Manager at Workers Blacktown, Brett Lane who is the new Venue Manager at Workers Sports and John Filipec the new Venue Manager at Workers Hubertus Country Club. I feel confident all three will add further value and interest to these venues. Our new Sporting Complex has now been handed over from our builders, Garry Allen and his staff are now doing finishing touches with landscaping to have it ready for the official opening early March. It is certainly a fabulous venue and Rugby League, Soccer and Cricket will be proud to have their players there next season. I hope our members have the opportunity to visit this complex and enjoy the facilities. 2018 is finished but there is no stopping us as we head into 2019. I would like to wish all our members a healthy, happy and joyful New Year and thank you for your support and for choosing Blacktown Workers Group for your Club choice. Due to Govt. changes and movements our SCC for our Seniors Living Resort was held up in back load at State Planning Office. As this goes to print I have been advised that it will be approved by the time you read this report and our DA lodged with Council as soon as possible afterwards. Our Board and Management work hard together as we strive to deliver excellence. We have lots of surprises and interesting events and exciting new projects for Board, Management and Staff to be involved in, to make us less dependent on gaming, in store for you so stay tuned into what is happening at your Club. Unfortunately, due to ageing members and sickness we continue to lose members. On behalf of The Board, Management and Staff, I send condolences to all who have lost family and friends. It is always a sad time so please take care. Keep Smiling and Be Kind to Each Other!

Dear Members,

CEO’s Report

At the end of a very big year for the Workers and the start to an exciting 2019, I’d like to thank you for all your support during 2018. 2019 is shaping up to be an amazing year for the Workers with plans in place for all three of our venues as we build on our success and set our foundations for the coming years. With our new sporting complex opening in early March, it’s great to see that the Workers remains committed to plans made more than 50 years ago for our children and local sporting groups to have access to the best sporting fields in Western Sydney. Combine this with the planned refurbishment of the Workers Blacktown, the senior living development at the Workers Sports and it is clear to see that our members are obviously at the forefront of our planning for future years. 2019 brings with it some exciting new changes and opportunities including a review of all promotions, a concentration on improving our food offering and a look at how we can offer even better entertainment and activities for our members across all three venues. These three items were amongst those raised in our recent member survey where we asked more than 15,000 members what they wanted from the Club, and we are delivering to that feedback. This year we are also introducing a number of new initiatives such as the outdoor cinema at Workers Hubertus in February and regular family fun days at the Workers Sports, so I look forward to sharing the fun with you during the year. Kind regards,

Dale Hunt Group CEO

About Our Heritage

Back in the Day! The official history is that on January 23 1955, the Blacktown Branch of the Labor Party met at Blacktown School of Arts to discuss the merits of forming a Club‌. But people don’t mention that the meeting occurred simply because a group of mates lead by Tom Gibbs had been drinking for years at the local Robin Hood Hotel but recently thought they had been mistreated and not treated as equal to other customers by the manager, so boycotted the Hotel and came up with the idea of starting their own drinking establishment.

The resulting meeting changed the history of Blacktown, not only with the Club forming but with a couple of very important foundations put into place. All people were to be treated equally, the venue was to be non-sectarian and non-political and that the original suggested name of Blacktown Workingman's Club be rejected because women would feel precluded. We were proud to host 288 of our long term members that have been members for more than 50 years at our annual Tin Shed Lunch to say thank you for the original idea and foundations from which our club has grown. Little could those original members perceive the huge difference their idea would have in the local area for generations to come. That simple idea created from a bad drinking experience has resulted in thousands of local children playing sport, our local hospitals receiving millions of dollars in support and countless community groups given the resources to carry out their important work. Today, we may be a very different business but our core values and principles on which we operate remain based on the founders original goals.

About Food With eight great choices of restaurants and cafés across the Workers Group, food plays an important part of our daily lives. That’s why 2019 is a year where we will be introducing even more exciting ideas and choices for our members to enjoy.

From Dessert bars to buffets, from new burgers to family specials and from 5 star meals to $10 members specials, we are planning a menu for all our members to enjoy and suit your changing needs.

This month, we add to the excitement by introducing three fantastic members specials including Steaks for $12, Pasta for $10 and everyone’s favourite, the Workers Schnitzel now reduced from $17 to $10 on Thursdays only.

From the recent members survey, Chef Kiran is now busy planning new menus across all three of our venues that will get every member excited about choice and value.

About Our Members

Celebrate Together! Last month was a month for our members to celebrate together with each other as we held two major events including our annual Children's Christmas party and our Seniors Christmas Lunch.

More than 8,000 people joined together for the biggest Workers Family Christmas event in recent history, for a day of fun and laughter at Hubertus Country Club and enjoyed the free rides, free food and free entertainment including 22 carnival rides, camel rides and even a giant water slide. Complimented with free show bags for every child and roving magic and circus entertainment, it was certainly a day to remember that delighted children of all ages.

This was not only a party but an adventure for many children who have never experienced such an event before, and for many, their first time actually seeing a real life camel, or being given the opportunity for unlimited rides or fun activities.

The centre stage was certainly a hit with entertainment ranging from a world renowned magician through to Giggles the Clown and even local sporting and dance groups.

12

Seniors Christmas We remember the importance of seniors in our community and the impact that they have had in our club for decades by making sure we also give them an opportunity to enjoy a special Christmas event tailored just for them. Whilst other clubs cut costs and reduce the amount they give, the Workers hosted 870 of our senior members to an event that included a two course meal, live entertainment and even free gifts for all in attendance.

Social inclusion has shown beyond doubt to improve health, reduce medical costs and improve wellbeing and happiness. At the Workers we are proud of the small part we play in this area based on the original concept of our founding members to create a non-sectarian and non-political club – a place for all in our community. Our sporting and Sub-Clubs also play a vital role in our social inclusion program offering the opportunity for thousands of local people to gather as friends in fun activities as well as being a part of a team environment, from 4 year old children through to our the seniors, there is an activity for everyone in our community to enjoy. The support of the Workers Group makes each of these more affordable for all. Why not take a look at one of our groups and fund an activity to enjoy for yourself.

About Our Kids

Ready To Launch! Save the date - Saturday March 2nd 2019. The time has finally come, in under a year a vacant land with plenty of potential has transformed into a state of the art sporting precinct and it’s about to open its gates! The massive development with almost 37,000m2 of luscious green grass was laid to sit in front of the two 350seat capacity grandstands with multiple change rooms, canteens, corporate rooms, a bar, 2 carparks, plaza areas and a 2.7m high by 3m wide elevated board walk which traverses through the riparian zone (land alongside the creek) which links the fields together. The four playing fields which include 2 football (soccer) fields, 2 state grade rugby league fields, and a cricket pitch has over 20 kilometres of pressurised irrigation piping underneath them which will then irrigate 100% of the residual storm water and irrigation water runoff which is captured in a 1,000,000-litre tank. All 4 playing surfaces were designed to retain and recycle as much water collected on site as is economically and physically practical. This will make the fields self-sufficient and ecologically sustainable and friendly. The GRAND OPENING will take place on Saturday March 2nd 2019. We aren’t going for your average type opening with a big red ribbon that gets cut with big golden scissors, we are going even more GRAND than that.

About Our Community PCYC

Blacktown Workers partnered with Police Citizens Youth Club of NSW to provide the World Festival of Magic for special needs and disadvantaged children and their families. Held on Wednesday 14 November at Workers Blacktown the show ran over one and a half hours for more than 800 people with tickets given out free to disability services, schools and service providers for young people and families who would normally not be able to afford to attend a show like this.

Miracle Babies

Every year in Australia around 48,000 newborn babies require the help of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN). 27,000 of these babies are born premature and up to 1,000 babies lose their fight for life. The Workers Group was proud to help the amazing Miracle Babies Foundation with a significant donation this month to support families with the overwhelming and traumatic experience that can have lifelong effects. Working with health professionals on the joint agenda of better outcomes for families, Miracle Babies provides informative education and insight on a family’s experience and funding for equipment, resources and research.

Royal Institute for Deaf & Blind Children

Our recent donation to Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children continued our annual tradition of supporting children with vision or hearing loss to live a more inclusive and enjoyable life. This annual ongoing support has now affected many children and had profoundly positive impacts on many families in the local area.

Blacktown Hospital

Our purchase of a Fibroscan machine for Blacktown Hospital allows the hospital to now undertake a program that assists patients and removes the need for invasive liver biopsies replacing it with an easy to use and safe methods of determining damage to the liver.

About Our Future

Change is Coming! Workers Blacktown

With a new year is coming a new look for Workers Blacktown with a multi-million dollar refurbishment starting in late March. After asking more than 15,000 members what they want to see in their Club, we have been busy in designing a venue to meet your current needs and your needs into the future. A new food offering will complement our existing food, more spaces to chat with friends, a child friendly space for families to enjoy, and a great new Sport Bar to enjoy will be just part of the new look at the Workers Blacktown. Designed specifically with the Blacktown lifestyle in mind, the new look will be all about bringing the outside into our club and creating a family friendly place for adults to gather and for families to spend more time together.

22

Workers Sports With more than 60% of our members now over the age of 60 years, we have been busy planning and preparing to build the best retirement resort in Western Sydney. Instead of the traditional retirement village, the Workers model is all about creating social inclusion opportunities like fitness centres, lawn bowls, entertainment and social groups as well as intergenerational choices like “adopt-a-nana programs, sport volunteering and places for your family to gather as they visit. It is about more than building a place to live, it is about improving your lifestyle by building a resort to love.
