By far the biggest crowd we’ve had at Workers Sports for a draw night! Thank you everyone for coming down and making it such a memorable night. We had 20 prizes up for grabs, ranging from $200 to the ever so slick Mercedes-Benz A180!

WORKERS BLACKTOWN 55 CAMPBELL STREET, BLACKTOWN 2148

Garth was called out at lucky number seven, picking the winning key revealing the Mercedes. The car was gone but there were still two x $2,000 cash prizes to go. The prizes were going steady with the $500 and $1,000 prizes getting claimed with only four prizes left. The crowd were wondering if the two major runners up prizes of $2,000 were even on the table!

Now to give away the brand new 2019 Mercedes-Benz C200 at Workers Blacktown. Make sure to make it in for our weekly draws for your chance to get an express pass straight to the car draw in December!

President’s Report Hello Members, I know it seems early, but this is my last report for 2019 as it will cover October, November and December. The last three months has given us excitement at the Club with our quarter Century Dinner where we honour our members who have been a Club Member for a minimum of 25 years. This year we added another 426 members giving us a total of 5,294. The members were entertained by Jade Hurley and was well received. On Friday 6th December we have the opportunity to honour our Tin Shed, Foundation and VIP Members with a special annual get together. These members have over 50 years in our Club. Please keep watch for your invitation and RSVP if you will be attending. The Board and I really look forward to spending time with you on this special day. Two special events took place on Friday

4

23rd August. We opened 'Salon Gi', our new hairdressing and beauty salon. Giovanna Gadaleta is the proprietor of the salon and has been at the Club for several years running the smaller premises. The opening was attended by myself, Jack Miller, Club management, staff and Club members, many who are already clients of the salon. On behalf of everyone associated with the Club, we wish Gi and her staff every success with this new chapter in their lives. That same afternoon we officially opened the new bar. This was attended by Board Executives, Directors, staff and jam packed with our members who had the chance to win tickets to Michael Buble at Qudos Bank Arena. This additional space will make it easier and more efficient to enhance the customer experience for our members and guests with food and coffee available at all times. As a Board we are all proud of these recent additions as we continue to move forward to add modern additions and facilities to

our Club. A special thank you to Kylie, our Venue Manager, Ross our Gaming Manager and Executive Manager Shelley and of course, all staff involved in making this day the great success it was. The Club was very proud to be involved in the “turning of the soil” ceremony for Grace’s Place. I was away on Club business, but the Directors did a great job and have told me there wasn’t a dry eye when Anita Cobby’s sister spoke of the whole ordeal and how proud her parents would be of this development going ahead. This is very close to all our hearts and we are aware of how much work everyone has put in to achieve the outcome. Our Children’s Christmas Party will again be held at Workers Hubertus Club at Luddenham on Sunday 1st December. Don’t forget to register your children for this great day. I am sure they will be disappointed if they miss out. Unfortunately, it is limited to members' own children, not

Murray Searle, Kay Kelly, Jack Miller, Paresh Patel, Ange Humphries, Shelley Fletcher, Kylie Canning, Ross Siragusano & Terry O'Loughlin

grandchildren, although grandparents are welcome to join them on the day. On behalf of the Board, Management and staff, I offer condolences to all that have lost loved ones during the year. Christmas can be a sad time when you have lost somebody close to you, but I feel family and friends will rally around you to make your Christmas as pleasant as possible.

To my Board, I thank you for the time and commitment you put in to take our Club ahead as we endeavour to make the right decisions to improve and continue to grow. I thank you for the support you show me even when some decisions test us all but I know we all have the same direction and passion for the Club.

I pray you all stay safe and enjoy the festive season. We all look forward to seeing you around the Club.

It is now time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and safe and Happy New Year.

Club President

Until next time. Keep Smiling and Be Kind to Each Other.

Kay Kelly

I thank all our staff for the time and effort you put in to make our Club a success and welcoming place for our members. The members are our Club family and we make them feel welcome and we appreciate the time they spend with us. Your kind smile and acknowledgment is great. Thank you. We have added two new staff members to our Executive Management Team being Paresh Patel, as our Executive Manager: Finance and Commercial and Alison Brown, our Executive Manager: Marketing and Communications. On behalf of us all, I am pleased to welcome them both to the Workers Group. Kay Kelly, Giovanna Gadaleta & Jack Miller Talk of the town

“EIN PROSIT, EIN PROSIT, DER GEMÜTLICHKEIT” (A toast, a toast, to cheer and good times). Good times we have had! However, there may’ve been some sore heads and some classic hangover cures being used after many an Oktoberfest, but apart from that, here is a toast to the good times Oktoberfest at Workers Hubertus brings!

Andrew and Brett saying Cheers

You may have heard the song “EIN PROSIT” multiple times either by the Tirolean Echoes in the bier hall or even by the very talented accordionist Phillipe roving around the grounds each year! If there is one song you will hear at any Oktoberfest event it is this song and it was one of the main reasons for those sore heads the next morning.

It may just sound like a drinking song but unlike most drinking songs this one has a special meaning behind it. The word “Gemütlichkeit” translates best to English as “cosiness” but in this case it stands for everyone to leave their troubles at the door, to have a good time and to have that feeling of belonging.

Ein prosit, ein prosit. Der gemütlichkeit. Ein prosit, ein prosit. Der gemütlichkeit. OANS, ZWOA, DREI, G'SUFFA! These famous lyrics translate simply to “A toast, a toast. To cheer and good times. A toast, a toast. To cheer and good times. ONE, TWO, THREE, DRINK!”

Since taking on Oktoberfest back in 2015 it has been a journey on its own, we do our best each year to encapsulate “Gemütlichkeit” to bring our ever-growing community together and to celebrate good times. With each year bringing more and more people through the gates we strive to keep this Bavarian / German tradition alive at Workers Hubertus, to keep it growing and to have it back bigger and better with years to come!

Oktoberfest fans enjoying the day.

If you didn’t get the chance to try our famous Pork Knuckle or even the ever so delicious Sauerbraten German Pot Roast over the Oktoberfest long weekends, we have you covered, we have it on our new menu at Hub Café. We look forward to seeing you again next year! PFIAT DI! DID YOU KNOW? Oktoberfest began on October 12, 1810 with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig, who later became King Ludwig I. His marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen was celebrated in Bavaria. On October 17, five days after the marriage, a large festival was held in front of the Sendlinger Tor, one of the gates leading to Munich. It became a great tourist attraction and a way for visitors to learn about Bavaria and its people.

Jade, John and Michelle

8

Today, Munich Oktoberfests are held in September because the weather is milder than that experienced in October. In Munich, the fest lasts for 16 days, beginning on a Saturday in September and always ending on the first Sunday in October. Talk of the town

CEO's Report Hello Members, Welcome to the October to December 2019 edition of Talk of the Town. As I’m sure many of you have seen by now, Phase 1 of the Workers Blacktown Club refurbishment has now been completed with the new Gaming Bar, Hair Salon (now known as Salon Gi) opening in late August, and both are now in full swing. Also, part of Phase 1 was the external update of the Club with a fresh coat of paint in a new colour. Further updates to the facade of the Club will be made in later stages, with large LED screens and timber look batons still to be added to complete the external upgrade. A new staffroom has also been completed on level 1 adjacent to the Marana Room. The previous staffroom was small, located under the Club near the cellar, and well below modern standards. Our staff are as important to us as our members, and therefore we felt it necessary to ensure that a staffroom of modern standards was essential. In mid-September the Board and Executive Management team undertook our annual

10

strategic planning session in which we reviewed our previous strategic plan and revised it accordingly. The strategic plan encompasses our short, mid & long-term strategic goals for the Workers Club Group. One thing is certain, is there are exciting times ahead for the Group involving all three of our Club venues. Members will be kept up to date as these plans progress. On Thursday September 12th, I had the pleasure of handing over the keys to a brand-new Mercedes-Benz A180 to one of our lucky loyal members. In addition, another 19 members walked away with a share of $11,000 in cash. It was a pleasure to see the Workers Sports Club full of members and I thank you for your continued support of such promotions. Talking about cars, we will be giving away another Mercedes-Benz this December, and let me just add that this one will be bigger and better! Please refer to inside this magazine and around the Clubs for details on how to enter. I’d like to advise you of a couple of new additions to our Executive Management team. Mr. Paresh Patel joined the Workers family on August 19th as ‘Executive Manager – Finance and Commercial’; closely

followed by Ms. Alison Brown on August 28th as ‘Executive Manager – Marketing and Communications’. Paresh and Alison bring with them many years of Club and Hospitality industry experience and I look forward to the value they will add to our organisation. Both Alison and Paresh join Shelley Fletcher ‘Executive Manager – People & Culture’, and I to form the Executive Management team of the Blacktown Workers Club Group. I know it may be early, but this edition will take us through to the end of the year and as such, on behalf of the Board, Management and Staff I would like to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year. I trust you will enjoy this edition of your Club magazine and as always, I look forward seeing you in our Clubs.

Many thanks,

Frank Raiti

About Keeping You Informed

It’s Australia’s most distinguished horse race and it is truly a race that stops the nation. With the race spanning over 155 years, first starting in 1861. It’s not just a race, it’s a cultural institution, with Victoria even having a public holiday on the day. On behalf of NSW, we are a little bit jealous! So here at the Workers we choose to make the most of it and make it feel like a public holiday!

Members enjoying the day.

There are two events on this year. Firstly Workers Sports holding live entertainment with the amplified acoustic duo Tim and Murph from The Spit Roasting Bibbers from 12pm to 4pm ripping out anything from Crowded House to ACDC, from Elvis to Gun's n' Roses, from Van Morrison to Hoodoo Gurus, from U2 to Foo Fighters, from Queen to Cold Chisel. At Workers Blacktown, Playlist Live starring Marny and Rebecca playing the best from acoustic, jazz to party anthems down in the Jack McNamara Lounge from 12.30pm to 4.45pm! Both Clubs will have all the races on the big screens especially race number seven! We also have best dressed prizes, sweeps starting from 10am and food specials just for you on the day. We can’t give you any tips for this Melbourne Cup, however we can give you some cold hard facts that might help you make a decision on the big day.

Members enjoying the day.

Did you know that when the barriers were introduced in 1924, no horse has ever won from barrier 18, in fact in the last 30 years, barriers 6, 12, 15, 19, 23, 24 have not produced a winner… So maybe stay away from the horses in those barriers. Whilst we are on the subject, barrier number 5 has been the most successful in the last 35 years producing four winners. Make sure to check the jockey’s weight as in the last 35 Melbourne Cup races, 25 winners have carried 55kg or less. So while you are stewing over which Club to come to and which horses to choose for your quinella, we will make sure to write a letter to Gladys Berjiklian to make Melbourne Cup a public holiday in NSW also. See you soon!

Members enjoying the day.

Community Corner You may hear the words "Club grants" floating around your sporting clubs, social clubs or even around your workplace. What is it? There are 1,400 not-for-profit registered clubs in NSW. From bowling clubs to social and sporting clubs, they are owned by the community for the benefit of the community. The NSW club industry employs 42,000 people, utilises more than 44,000 volunteers and is home to more than 5.7 million members. Annually, clubs make a social contribution valued at $1.2 billion, and an economic contribution estimated at $3.2 billion. ClubGRANTS is designed to ensure that larger clubs contribute to the provision of front-line services for their local communities; and to ensure that the disadvantaged in the community are better positioned to benefit from the substantial contributions made by those clubs. ClubGRANTS also facilitates contributions by larger clubs towards infrastructure to support sporting, health and community activities. The scheme was introduced in 1998 by the NSW Government. In 2014, ClubGRANTS delivered more than $100 million in funding to thousands of charities, sporting teams and community groups, and more than $1 billion has been provided since the Scheme began. The ClubGRANTS program is made possible through the support of your local club and the NSW Government. Source: www.clubsnsw.com.au

PCYC Nations of Origin is a multicultural, education and leadership not-for-profit program run by PCYC, which culminates annually during NAIDOC week. The program has four main components being reconciliation, education, cultural identity and sport. The aim is to increase school retention with an 80% school attendance rate required to participate, lower youth crime, keep youth off the streets, keep young people active in the hope of creating positivity and cultural respect within the community. Cultural Identity is a focal point of the project, with all teams representing their community by using their traditional tribal name from their local area. The teams consist of a 70:30 ratio of Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal youth. BWCG donated $11,000 to help towards the overall expenditure of this amazing program. This money will help cover the costs of accommodation, fuel, uniforms, bus hire, meals, trophies and their club presentation at the end of the season.

Engaging Indigenous Students in Education and Employment The Clontarf Foundation Provides an important school engagement mechanism for many at risk teenage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male students who would otherwise not attend school or have very low attendance. The focus of this project is to support the existing operations at the Mount Druitt Clontarf academies located at Chifley College schools by planning daily activities within the focus areas of education, leadership, employment, well-being, community and sport. The key objectives for this program are to engage and retain the students back into the education system and ensure the education program provided by the school is meeting the needs of each student. The Clontarf program will expose the boys to as many experiences, activities, environments, social settings and people as possible in order to broaden their thinking about what life may hold for them in the future. Clontarf staff will also further assist academy graduates to

28

secure employment or transition into further training/study, as well as provide them with on-going support. $60,000 was donated towards the Clontarf Foundation from the BWCG to continue this beneficial education program for young males aged between 15 and 24 years within our community.

Traffic Offenders Program The Traffic Offenders Program is a NSW Department of Justice pre-sentencing option available to magistrates/ judges after a person has had a traffic offence. The aim is to educate traffic offenders to change their attitudes and demonstrated behaviours to their driving. The program has been operating since March 1992, since then over 16,500 people have attended. BWCG donated $20,000 towards the Traffic Offenders Program to help cover the running costs involved and continue this great benefit of educating our community, making it safer on our roads.

Koh-Hajer Youth Development Organisation The School Lunch Box Program is run by not-for-profit Koh-Hajer Youth Development Organisation. The program is staffed by volunteers who aim to create lunch boxes full of nutritional food that is culturally acceptable to Sudanese and South Sudanese school children who come from financially disadvantaged families. The lunch boxes will be provided to these children five days a week during the school term and will run for a full 12 months. BWCG donated $10,000 to fund this amazing project. This means that 20 students received a school lunch box packed with nutritional fruits, vegetables and snacks during the period of July 2019 to July 2020. With so many causes needing financial assistance, Blacktown Workers Club Group endeavours to provide for as many as possible. We are thankful for every community development program and social service groups within our community striving to do better for our people and city for years to come.

The turning of the soil for Grace's Place.

Grace’s Place turning of the sod The vision that started in 2017 is now becoming reality. The world’s first residential trauma facility will be there to provide support in a safe place where children, teenagers and their families grieving the death of someone they love through homicide, can share their experiences, receive counselling, be involved in therapeutic programs and learn life skills on how to survive the trauma without their loved one. The build is underway after the recent turning of the sod, which was led by the Homicide Victims Support Group (HVSG). HSVG was established in June 1993 by founding members Grace and Garry Lynch, parents of Anita Cobby and Christine and Peter Simpson, parents of Ebony Simpson. Martha Jabour who has been the Executive Director of HSVG since 1993 says she is truly grateful for all the support Grace’s Place has received. After the thousands of hours of work that has been poured into the planning, development and fundraising for this great cause, it is looking like the Doonside centre is to be completed in mid-2021. Here at Workers Blacktown we are proud supporters of Grace’s Place, hosting race days and other fundraisers towards this great cause. This November we are hosts to the Anity Cobby Charity Dinner with all funds raised going towards Grace’s Place. Join us on the 23rd of November for a night of dining and dancing in the Diamond Showroom, with entertainment by The Vallies – A tribute to the great Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to donate and get involved including raffles, live auctions and a silent auction. For more information and tickets go to workersclub.com.au Grace’s Place will be a beacon of hope to so many children and young people who have experienced unimaginable tragedy.

Hello Members To date this year (Jan to Aug 2019), I am pleased to advise that we have already donated more than $1.1M to local community groups and people in need. Our Group profit before tax @ 31-Aug-2019 is $3.6M, which is pleasingly better than budgeted expectations and also better when compared to the same financial period last year (2018).
