Did you know that 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. With the money raised from the morning alone the Cancer Council can now continue to: • Protect children from potentially harmful sun exposure through the Cancer Council’s SunSmart school program; • Pay multiple cancer nurses to be available on 13 11 20 for an hour to offer expertise and support to those in need; • Provide transport and a night's stay at a local Cancer Council Lodge for people who need to travel for vital cancer treatment; • Help provide annual training to Support Group Volunteers so they can offer ongoing emotional and practical support to those impacted by cancer; • Pay for an analysis of multiple gene samples for a research project, helping to progress cancer research. The real thanks go to the wonderful people like you especially those who were involved, together we're making great strides towards a cancer free future. Thousands of lives have been saved, but there is so much more still to be done. We are privileged to be part of a community that is so generous, we look forward to holding another Biggest Morning Tea again next year where we aim to hit the $5000 mark. It is never too late to donate, for more information on the Cancer Council or the Biggest Morning Tea please visit: www.biggestmorningtea.com.au.

President’s Report Hello Members, Can you believe that half of 2019 has passed us already. Just shows that we must all cram as much as we can into our lives and also enjoy time with family and friends. We have had a few disappointments in this time but nothing we can’t remedy. Dale Hunt who we introduced last year as our CEO was offered a position that was just too hard to refuse. It was disappointing to lose Dale as he had great vision for our Club. One person does not get results without “the team” so the Board, Management and Staff will still be moving forward for success. We thank Dale for his contribution and wish him every success in his new position. We have promoted and appointed Frank Raiti as the new Club Chief Executive Officer. Frank has worked as our CFO for the last 3.5 years, knows how the Club operates and converses well with the Board, Management and Staff. Frank joined

4

the Club in 2015 bringing with him over 20 years’ experience in both the club industry and finance sector. During his time at the Club he has played an integral part in the strategic development of the Club. He is eager to talk to Members and with the support of us all to lead the business forward through the exciting times ahead. Please join me in welcoming Frank to this position. The next disappointment was the rejection of our Site Compatibility Certificate for our Retirement Resort. I was asked to comment to the local paper when this news was made public. I did so with the following:

“We have spent a number of years developing the model behind the project to deliver a real positive difference in living for the senior members of our community. Whilst others look at buildings, we were planning an integrated community hub which built social engagement and social inclusion to improve the lives of local people including a range of activities to encourage healthy ageing and wellbeing.

Our plans are to improve lives with an amazing place to live and then use the funds to invest in our local community even more than we currently do. We are now reviewing our options and looking at ways that we can revisit the project to ensure local people do not miss out on the lifestyle that they deserve” The Clubs Project Control Committee met with relevant parties recently and I would like to share with you the latest information. The design development continues for our future Retirement Living next to the Workers Sports Club. Legislation changes late last year came at an unfortunate time for the project with a Government Planning Panel recently deciding not to provide the Club with a Site Compatibly Certificate because the development did not meet some of the requirements resulting from the legislation changes. Our design team has put forward a modified approach to building that the Board of Directors has accepted and it is anticipated that a

reapplication to the Government Planning Panel will occur soon. The Development Application documents have been completed and they are ready for submission to Blacktown City Council as soon as the Government Planning Panel assesses the application for the Site Compatibly Certificate. It is our intention to start the building works for our future Retirement Living as soon as we receive development consent from Blacktown City Council. The size of the first stage of development has yet to be ratified by the Board of Directors, but we do envisage that a number of high quality 1,2 and 3 bedroom Retirement Living apartments together with a social centre closely tied to the Sports Club will be built in Stage 1. Our aim in all of this is to create a harmonious community around the Club and the Sports Centre for the members and community to enjoy. I will keep you updated as things progress as what started as “as a dream” needs to become “reality”. On a lighter note. On 16th June over 1,600 children, family and friends attended the Wiggles Show in our Diamond Showroom. Two shows 10.30am and 1.00pm. What a

delight to see so many happy faces, children and adults as they danced and sang along. Many generations grew up with “The Wiggles”. Thanks Liz for providing such versatile entertainment for our members and their families. It is good to see Harold Becker back on deck after his convalescence. Harold was certainly missed by the members, but he is back healthier than ever as he rushes around and continues his duties as Welfare Officer. A special thank you to Greg Taylor who filled in for Harold until he was well enough to return. As the years pass it is inevitable that we lose members. On behalf of the Board of Directors and Management I send our condolences to anyone who has lost loved ones or friends. It is always a sad time to lose them. Take care. Until next time. Keep Smiling and Be Kind to Each Other.

CEO's Report Hello Members, It is my pleasure to write to you in this July to September 2019 edition of Talk of the Town, having recently been appointed by your Board of Directors as the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Blacktown Workers Club Group. Some of you may already know me, as I am not new to the Club, having joined the Club in November 2015 as Chief Financial Officer. Over this time, as part of the Executive Management Team, I have worked closely with the Board, previous CEO’s and other Executive Managers in driving our Group forward. I am pleased to be working with some of the best managers and staff in the Club industry and look forward to leading our team into the future for many more years to come. You would have noticed that the long overdue refurbishment of our Workers Blacktown Club in Campbell Street is now well under way, with Phase 1 scheduled to be completed by early August 2019. The new exterior Club facade, Hair Salon,

8

Gaming Bar and Cashier, is just the start of what will, by the end, be a very impressive and modern Club refurbishment. At the end of June, we said goodbye to one of our longest serving employees, Payroll Co-ordinator Joan McKenzie. Joan had been with the Club for over 20 years and has now decided to put her feet up and retire. I know from a personal point of view that Joan made me feel very welcome when I joined the Club and I personally will miss her around the office. She will be missed by all and on behalf of the Club I wish Joan all the best in her retirement and thank her for her many, many years of service to the Club. Certainly an achievement that is rarely seen today. Regarding my background, prior to joining the Blacktown Workers Club Group back in November 2015 I worked for the Penrith RSL Club as Executive Manager – Finance & Corporate Services for circa 3.5 years. Prior to that I was the Financial Controller for the Wests Tigers NRL Football Club for 5 years, and before that my corporate career stemmed across several finance related roles across varying industries including a large Australian Insurance company, an ASX

listed Australian IT firm and a US based Professional Services company. My professional qualifications include a Bachelor of Commerce from Western Sydney University, and I am a professionally qualified CPA (Certified Practicing Accountant). I hope you enjoy this edition of your Club magazine and I look forward to meeting many of you out and about in all our Clubs. Please don’t be a stranger and feel free to come up and introduce yourself to me. If there is anything we can do for you please feel free to ask any one of our wonderful staff and they will do their best to assist you. Thank you for your support of the Blacktown Workers Club Group, it’s your Club, and it’s only with your continued support we will continue to grow and ensure we are here long into the future. Many thanks, Regards,

Frank Raiti

About Keeping You Informed

advocate and support members of the local community affected by health, mental health and social issues. Common Groundz Community Café recently celebrating their 10th birthday is so much more than a cafe. Located in Lalor Park, this not for profit is a social Hub for the local community and a place of retreat and service for those in need. Opened in 2008 as a direct response to growing social dislocation and disadvantage in Lalor Park, the cafe, its staff and volunteers, committed to serving the needs of the local area by bridging community through engagements and events, and committing to projects and partnerships under its mission all while serving quality food and coffee - made with love, of course. Common Groundz offers training and volunteer opportunities in hospitality skills for people at risk of economic exclusion, drop-in support for people in need, as well as meaningful daily activities for people at risk of social exclusion - especially through its community arts studio program, Creative Groundz Studio.

Local cafe supporters

Danielle RG a Lalor Park local knows how to bounce back from a personal struggle and through her latest art initiative, she hopes to help others do the same. The youth worker and artist with Creative Groundz Studio have launched their collection of Therapy Dolls here at Workers Blacktown on the 21 June 2019, designed to help those with mental illness, trauma or social issues.

The collection featured 18 unique dolls, each with a personal story and experience, such as depression, LGBTQI, autism or THE NEW EXTERIOR LOOK physical abuse. Plans for a second collection of 25 dolls is also in the works. The “face” of our building is the first thing that we will be updating with a fresh new look and appearance let Danielle RG has been Sinceto2015, people clearly understand that things are changing at a Community Arts program delivering the Worker’s. dedicated to supporting people with mental health in a safe environment. This program has allowed the Stitches Collection™ designs to come to life. Every Launch night at Workers Blacktown day, the crew at Creative Groundz Studio

12

The designs have been used by Danielle RG for youth and community engagement projects since 2010. Based on years of drawing with children through school and community workshops, Stitches Therapy Dolls are created using the very format taught to children to design characters: circle head, rectangle or triangle body, halfmoon ears and shoes, and mostly big eye and little eye elements. The Therapy Dolls are hoped to be used as a tool for children and youth in therapy and for them to be used in schools, clinics and community groups. Although designed for young children and youth who are affected by illness, mental health and individual trauma, these dolls have been created as a way to open up dialog for vulnerable members of our community. The proceeds of all Stitches Dolls directly support Creative Grounds Studio community arts and Common Groundz Community Café Lalor Park community projects. Since their opening in 2008 the Blacktown Workers Club Group has had the privilege to support and donate close to $170,000 to Danielle RG and the team at the Common Groundz Café, Creative Groundz Studio, the new community initiative of the Stitches Collection – Therapy Dolls and the amazing work that they do for our local community. Following recent and necessary upgrades to the cafe and its program spaces, Common Groundz is enabling its space to improve how it serves the community. With laundry and shower facilities underway, a community bus in the pipeline, and investment in a new outreach trailer all planned for late 2019.

Charity Race Day 2019 With the help of all our sponsors and all the attendees on the 23 May 2019 we managed to raise over $50,000 for Grace's Place. Together we helped to make a vision a reality for children and families that are affected by homicide. The Grace's Place Charity Race Day is to raise awareness and funds for the world’s first residential trauma centre right here in the heart of Blacktown. The money raised from the Race Day will go straight to the building works. The centre looks to be launched in mid-2021, giving traumatised children a safe place where they can start to heal. Grace's Place will be a beacon of hope to so many children, young people and families who have experienced unimaginable tragedy. Special thanks go to everyone involved and an even bigger thanks goes to our major sponsors Paynter Dixon, Thomas Geer Lawyers, Russell Corporate Advisory, Mitsubishi Alpolic, Network Business Supplies, Gleam Chemicals Australia, and Gold Crest Security.

Benchmark in Hospitality Services Blacktown Workers Club Group HR Manager, Shelley Fletcher said, "We're very proud to be the first organisation in the world to offer our staff the opportunity to stand in the shoes of a bartender to practice serving customers and navigate challenging situations in the safety of a virtual bar, filmed here at Blacktown Workers Club. Blacktown Workers Club’s commitment to our community and quality customer service means we're always exploring new ways to improve how we do things for the benefit of our members. To continuously improve how the experience of our customers, we’re now enabling our staff to serve virtual customers and work through possible consequences of their actions. We believe this innovation will be key for Blacktown Workers Club staff setting new benchmarks in customer service excellence.” YesVR co-founder, Paul King said, "We gamified training with realistic scenarios set within a realistic workplace environment to ensure our learners are engaged and our content is relevant. We have invested a lot of time working closely with innovative industry leaders like Blacktown Workers Club and front-line staff to ensure YesVR meets the learning objectives of hospitality staff and the operational needs of the hospitality industry." YesVR co-founder, Dianne Flakus said: "Virtual reality offers a fun and interactive way for people to practice how to make customers feel welcome whilst reducing stress, minimising risk of harm and helping to prevent situations escalating in the workplace. As an industry veteran, I know how stressful and daunting working in hospitality can be. Statistics indicate a significant number of people working in hospitality are young, casual workers. Managing difficult customers can be particularly challenging for new or inexperienced staff so it's important they are effectively trained and well supported. Allowing people to interactively navigate confronting scenarios in a safe, virtual workplace allows people to be better prepared; it develops a person’s confidence to manage difficult conversations, and they know what to do to take control in the event of an incident. We anticipate the win for Blacktown Workers Club’s employees and patrons will encourage other venues to explore the future of training with our award-winning VR solution.”
