I have been disturbed to hear rumours that we are closing our Club in Campbell Street. This is the furthest thing from the truth and is certainly not happening. How anyone can spread this kind of rumour when there is no way it is happening is beyond me. This Club has been operating for 63 years and has and will always be an icon in the Blacktown community. It is an old building but we will continue to maintain and improve the decor and amenities.

For our long-standing Members with the Mortality Fund, I urge you to renew your membership by 31st January each year to continue your subscription for this fund. If you do not renew and pay the mortality fund subscription by the due date you will be ineligible to claim this money. The reason I am telling you this is because a few members have failed to do this and it certainly pulls on our heartstrings when due to constitution we must decline family requests. If you have loved ones sick or in nursing homes please follow this up for them. For the first time we added twoup to our Anzac Day activities. It was a good day for both young and old, I thank Steve Costello for his contribution to help make it a success at Workers Sports. Congratulations to our staff that took part in the “Honour our Heroes” walk at Parramatta to raise funds and awareness for returned soldiers from Afghanistan. As the only non RSL Club that took part we also had the most participants. Our staff did this in their own time and showed the Workers brand proudly for a great cause. Thank you. The Sporting Precinct at Workers Sports is nearing completion with fields and grandstands taking shape. We are anticipating completion in the next few months (weather permitting). The Board and senior management have spent the last few years looking at our ILU resort at Reservoir Road and
a presentation of ideas was shown to members at our recent AGM. We are in final stages of obtaining figures and plans for DA application but this will not be submitted until as a Board we are confident that the Club can sustain this and be confident of success. Three of our long-standing staff members retired recently with over 100 years’ service collectively Shirley O’Connor, Denise Stevens and Heather Harbour. We thank them for their services and wish them a happy retirement. The Club was a finalist at the Ace Awards for the Technical, Light and Sound category and Liz for Compere of the Year. They didn’t win but were in great company and once again did us all proud. Our Sporting Bodies have achieved some great results during their season and we appreciate all the efforts the committee, coaches, trainers and players have made to make it fun and enjoyable. Welfare Officer, Harold Becker, has been extremely busy visiting members and attending funerals. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff I offer our condolences to members who have lost loved ones. I look forward to seeing you around our venues. Keep Smiling and Be Kind to each other.

Group Chief Executive Officer’s REPORT “It Is An Exciting Time To Be Part Of The Workers Family” important. Every dollar our members spend in our club makes a difference to the lives of local people.
Dear Members, I am writing this at the end of my first week as CEO with Blacktown Workers and the first thing that I want to say is thankyou for all the very warm welcomes and immediate support. It has been a wonderful experience in joining a Club with such passionate and engaged members. I truly am fortunate to be joining the Workers at such an exciting time in the Clubs history, the beginning of a new era of growth and success for the Club that will stand us in good stead for generations to come. With the new Sporting Fields nearing completion, a strong diversification strategy about to take shape, improvements to occur at all three Clubs in the Group and a return to the values of member satisfaction and engagement, we are refocussing on our relevance and the role that we as a Social Enterprise play in the local community. We operate a unique and very special business where the profits we make go to improving the lives of local people and we take that role very seriously, including the introduction of our new Bottom Line values. Where others concentrate solely on the money that they can make, we consider the value we add to the people with which we engage, and the community in which we operate, equally

Our amazing staff have already began being active in making a difference through their commitment to help others. I am proud of them for activities such as Workers Walkers where staff walked 42km to raise awareness of the 42 veterans that were killed in Afghanistan, the new vegetable garden to be established at Hubertus with the produce being used in a local café staffed by the disabled and using all profits to help the disadvantaged and they are planning much more. Over the coming months, we will be reviewing each and every offer in the Club to make them more interesting and exciting to you as a member and in the next few weeks, the Board will meet to plan our strategy for the coming years. As I said, it is an exciting time to be part of the Workers family. In this week alone, we have already given away a car to one lucky member, awarded more than $14,000.00 in prizes to members, and donated more than $24,000 to our local community….. and that is just this week.

“Blacktown Workers Club was the single largest contributor to our relief operations in Tathra. The Club’s generous support enabled us to purchase additional equipment and extend the operation for a third week.” Geoff Evans – CEO, Team Rubicon Australia. Of the $20,000 donated to Team Rubicon $15,825 was used to buy much needed equipment and $4,175 was used to buy food and water for those in need. AREA BURNED RANGED BETWEEN 150 TO 1,000 HECTARES
12 of the 83 volunteers with a very relieved resident
On Sunday 18 March 2018, a bushfire began in the locality of Reedy Swamp, near Tarraganda which swept through the town of Tathra on the New South Wales South Coast destroying homes and blocking one of only two roads out of the town. More than 200 people evacuated their homes not knowing if their houses would make it through the afternoon and spent the night at the Bega evacuation centre. With the fire burning through to the next morning estimates of the area burned ranged between 150 to 1,000 hectares of residential areas, farmland and forest reserves in that 70 buildings were believed to have been lost. The New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) later confirmed that 69 homes were destroyed and 39 were damaged. Many people have been displaced from their homes and may have to spend many months in alternative accommodation. After the area was assessed and deemed safe some residents revisited the remains of their homes.

WO R K E R S WA L K E R S WALKING FOR OUR VETERANS FEATURE STORY
BWC staff that participated
Sunday the 6th May marks the day that 22 staff from Blacktown Workers Club Group (BWCG) took a step forward in supporting Australian Defence Force Veterans in need of assistance. The Honour Our Heroes Relay Walk is held annually at Parramatta Park by the Veterans’ Benevolent Fund (VBF) and the RSL & Services Clubs Association. The Relay walk is one of many fundraisers run by VBF, which supports practical programs and services that help Veterans and their immediate families. Many Defence personnel return from active service suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) as a result of the situations they confront in the line of duty. PTS can often mean returning to a normal life is difficult.
8
www.workersclub.com.au
The Relay Walk is not only about raising funds and awareness about our Veterans it also a chance to celebrate our Veterans. 22 of our staff took part in the 3km circuit, with the walk being 42km in total: honouring the bravery and sacrifice of the 42 Aussie soldiers who gave their lives for our nation in service in Afghanistan.
“I was humbled to be invited to join the team, and participate in this staff organised event. Together dressed in our Camos the Workers Walkers completed the 42km walk. My first lap was in honour of Lance Corporal Jason Marks. Jason was a Commando in the Special forces and was awarded Unit Citation for Gallantry in 2006 as part of the Special Operations Task Group in 2006. Sadly, while deployed in Afghanistan in 2008 Jason was killed in action during a gun battle with Taliban Extremists, leaving behind his wife and 2 young children.
This is only one story, there are 41 others, all which show the sacrifice made by our defence personnel”. – Shelley Fletcher, Human Resources Manager BWCG. The Workers Walkers team managed to raise over $1300 with 100% of the funds going directly to the VBF. To make a donation and to find out more about the walk please visit our website.

B UIL D ING OU R FUTURE FEATURE STORY
Two room micro bat enclosure.
Bungaribee Creek – Riparian Zone.
Seeing that the Bungaribee Creek runs through the new precinct a lot more work had to go into preserving the vegetation and conserving the wildlife. The environmentally sensitive area had significant works undertaken by Garry Allen – Head Greenskeeper of the Blacktown Workers Club Group and his team to rehabilitate the area using Greening Australia’s Vegetation ManagementPlan which involved removing all the introduced planting and replacing with local native species. Over 150 trees were retained although the trees that were permanently removed were turned into mulch which has and will be recycled into landscaping around the sporting precinct.
Construction of the new carpark.
What a year it has been, 60,000 truck movements to move 64 Olympic swimming pools worth of soil to make room for our brand-new Sporting Precinct at Blacktown Workers Sports Club. May 2017 work began on the massive development with almost 37,000m2 of luscious green grass laid to sit in front of the two 350-seat capacity grandstands with multiple change rooms, canteens, corporate rooms, 2 carparks, plaza areas and a 2.7m high by 3m wide elevated board walk which traverses through the riparian zone (land alongside the creek) which links the fields together. The four playing fields which include 2 football (soccer) fields, 2 state grade rugby league fields, and a cricket pitch has over 20 kilometres of pressurised irrigation piping
18
www.workersclub.com.au
underneath them which will then irrigate 100% of the residual stormwater and irrigation water runoff which is captured in a 1,000,000-litre tank. All 4 playing surfaces were designed to retain and recycle as much water collected on site as is economically and physically practical. This will make the fields self-sufficient and ecologically sustainable and friendly.
Nesting boxes and landing pads were introduced into the trees for the use of over
5 species of Micro bats and flora corridors were planted to assist with the movement of the bats. An exclusion zone was also created around an area of the dam for the protection of the endangered Meridolum Corneovirens also known as the Cumberland Plain Land Snail.
“The significance of this development for the Workers brand is fantastic for all areas, environmentally, sustainability, community interaction and promotion of sport. With the continued development, the Workers Sports Club will create a unique niche within the City of Blacktown”. – Garry Allen. All that is left is now is the mammoth task of landscaping the 61,000m2 area which will be shared between Garry, his team and Greening Australia. Stay tuned for more updates!
The bulk of the earthworks needed an impressive line-up of trucks, excavators and machines which included 2x Cat 627 scrapers, 3x Cat 825 compactors, 1x Cat 815 compactor, 3x 30t excavators, 1x 20t excavator, 1x14t excavator, 1x 8t excavator, 1x Cat, 140M grader, 3x 20t dump trucks, 1x 14t smooth drum, 1x 14t Padfoot roller, 1x Backhoe, 2x Water carts and 2x Bobcats.
