CLUB PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hello Members, Group CEO, Dale Hunt has only been in the position for a few months and his feet haven’t really hit the ground, but his enthusiasm and energy are certainly a pleasure to see. Motivating all of us to achieve what we want and more for our members, community and the Club’s future. I know the proof is in the pudding, but I am confident we have the best person for this position.

Congratulations to Robert (Bob) Vincent and Theodore (Pat) Collins who were presented with Life membership for their devoted service to the Workers Group as a Director for over 10 years.

It is a privilege to host members who win tickets to fabulous International shows at Qudos Bank Arena. These members have a great time and are so appreciative of having the opportunity to attend. Good luck to all our members who participate in this popular promotion. I hope you get the opportunity to see a live show in our corporate suite Our Children’s Christmas Party will be held on Sunday 2nd December from 10am to 3pm at our Workers Hubertus Country Club at Luddenham. This if for our members’ children (sorry no grandchildren). Applications can be submitted from 1st September until 15th November, but you must be a financial member as at end October. We have extended the time this year but will not accept late applications. Registration is open from babies to 15-year-olds. Refreshment and food outlets will be available if you wish to purchase lunch. Sadly, we lost Les Bassett in July. Les will be remembered by many. He was the Club Welfare Officer for 12 years, Old Tin Shed Member, VIP member and Life Member, he loved his Club and was very proud of his recognition. He won Blacktown City Senior Citizen of the Year. Les helped many and will be greatly missed. Board Members recently attended the Baseball Presentation. It was a lovely night and I must compliment all who attended on their dress code. Congratulations to all who received awards. It was wonderful to see all the success in higher grades as representatives in State and National Teams.

I and fellow Directors Jack, Jim and George attended the Neville Layton Tournament Presentation run by the Men’s Outdoor Bowls. It was a fun weekend for all the 11 teams, some coming from as far as Cobar to compete. Jan Layton and her family were guests of honour at the Presentation. Our Sporting Bodies are a high priority on our agenda. We strive to provide the best venue that so that they can be proud to represent our Club. The operation and success of our teams rest solely with those people who step up and volunteer for the committee and ground work. I realise that at times you feel unappreciated, but the Board certainly appreciates what you do to keep the Workers flags flying. Thank you from all of us.

Group Chief Executive Officer’s REPORT “We are now in a position to capitalise on some amazing opportunities” Dear Members As we now enter Spring, it seems a very opportune time to speak about the growth and exciting things about to start happening throughout the Workers Group. In July, the Board of Directors and Executive management team met and planned the strategic direction for our great Clubs over the next year and into the future. The Board has directed that we are now in a position to capitalise on some amazing opportunities and prepare for a very exciting future. Blacktown Workers will see the start of an ambitious update to bring our main site in line with our members needs and expectations as well as offer some new features and products never before seen at Blacktown. At Workers Sports, we are in the final stages of preparing to lodge our Development Application to build the newest and most innovative Over 55s Village in Australia, combined with social inclusion and engagement programs, home care and an intergenerational lifestyle model that will have wonderful positive impacts on people’s lives. We certainly haven’t forgotten Workers Hubertus Country Club as we now progress towards an entertainment precinct that will showcase some very innovative and fun concepts for the entire family to enjoy. At the same time, the staff at all three Clubs have been working hard on improving our service to our members and guests and

improving our food and beverage offers to meet your needs. We have started to review all our promotions to offer more excitement and fun to our members including the new members drive which is running really well with new members joining us every day. A new Community Relations Officer is about to be appointed so that our Sub-Clubs and Sporting Groups get more support from our Club and our community realises even more benefits from the Workers Group being part of the local community. Our new Projects Manager will begin to see our business spread further into the community, meeting our member’s needs in a number of different areas. Our community activities have already started with our staff personally taking the challenge and through their own hard work (often in their own time), has seen a new courtyard created for Mt Druitt Palliative Care, a new garden being created for Help2Help at Hubertus, care packages created for local homeless people and considerable other charity work. After biding our time for the right opportunities and plans to take shape, it is now time for us to begin our growth period and secure our future for generations to come, but more importantly it is now time to step up to a new level with the care and service that we offer our loyal and well deserving members. Thank you to those that have made suggestions on how we can improve, given feedback on what you want the Workers to become and showed us what you already love about our great Club.

started their journey together last year whereby our selected staff went to Cambodia to help the communities and families that are still affected and struggling from the four-year reign of Khmer Rouge (1975-79) when over a million lives were taken. The name Ratha comes from a young boy found in a secluded location in Cambodia who needed urgent assistance, as he suffered from significant disabilities. Ratha was the major inspiration behind the help2help charity. Since 2011 help2help has been providing education, health and humanitarian services to the children of rural Cambodia. In 2017, help2help Australia commenced operations with a view to provide humanitarian support to disadvantaged groups, specifically within the Sydney basin. Additionally, pledging to assist smaller charities who may not receive any form of financial or volunteer support. Help2help and BWCG will be partnering to build a garden at Workers Hubertus Country Club which will provide produce such as general in season fruits, vegetables and poultry to the various Ratha’s Cafés to reduce the cost of business and maximise profits which can be used to provide aid to disadvantaged groups in Australia. The vision with creating market gardens was not only to provide the produce to the Cafés but also to provide employment for people with a disability in this space.

“Somewhere along the way, we must learn that there is nothing greater than to do something for other’s” - Martin Luther King JR. Helping or to do something for others is not always about donating a monetary value, it’s also about going above and beyond that and donating time, resources and a helping hand. Blacktown Workers Club Group (BWCG) has been working on making a difference, not only within our three venues but in the wider community. The BWCG envisage growth and with that our goals, our projects, our vision grows. Over the past few months some of these projects include Ratha’s Market Gardens at Workers Hubertus Country Club, a new tranquil garden for Mount Druitt Hospitals Palliative Care Unit, the One Meal “it makes a difference” initiative and Homeless Persons Week initiative with Parramatta Mission. Ratha’s Market Gardens is a help2help initiative. Help2help and the BWCG originally

is doing to provide healthy and hearty meals to the homeless, destitute, impoverished and underprivileged people in our community. Through the help of One Meal – “It makes a difference” many homeless and underprivileged people are receiving the nourishment that is needed. The BWCG have an arrangement with One Meal whereby every Saturday, twenty-five healthy and hearty meals are made and packed up and taken to our local and wider communities. One Meal works hand in hand with another BWCG staff (Workers Warriors) initiative that took place in early August. Steve, Geoff & Chris - BWC Groundskeepers

“We are very excited at the prospect of working together to make a difference in the lives of people with different abilities, in providing meaningful employment.” – Blayne Webb – help2help Director. The garden is set to go ahead within the next few months with a special thanks going to Brett – Workers Hubertus Country Club Venue Manager for tying all this together with help2help.

Homeless Persons Week held by Parramatta Mission was held between 5th of August and Friday 10th August. However, a lot of work had gone into making the week what it was. For months in advanced BWCG staff took it upon themselves to raise money to purchase brand new back packs, blankets, clothes, toiletries, other hygienic products and many more essentials. With staff also donating many products to the great work that is done at Parramatta Mission. Parramatta Mission has been providing services to people in Greater Western Sydney who are homeless, facing crisis and living with mental illness since the early 1970’s.

Another garden however was completed on the 25th of July for “Do Something Day”. Do Something! Day is all about encouraging people to give their best through volunteering, donating to charities or performing a random act of kindness.

Not only did the Workers Warriors manage to donate a bus load of much needed items our staff also donated their time during the Homeless Persons Week, assisting with handing out food, drinks and hampers to the homeless and those in need.

In just under 4 days the entrance for the Mount Druitt Hospital Palliative Care Unit was transformed from a dusty patch of land to a green and peaceful place for reflection. “I know this will really make a difference to our patients and their relatives coming into the facility seeing that they have a warm space and that they will be able to sit and reflect” - Mt Druitt Hospital Palliative Care nursing unit manager Trish Dalgleish. Special thanks go to Geoff, Chris and Steve – BWCG Groundskeepers for all the time and work they put into making this project come to life. Special thanks also go to all the BWCG Staff that were involved helping in every way they could. Even more thanks go to Billabong Turf, Park Equip, Blacktown Building Supplies and local tradesmen including Keith Sleaman and his team who all donated their time and supplies to this project.

Special thanks go to Margaret, Sandra and Traci who were the backbone of this project from the beginning. This project is not over, with the three planning to continue this every year and even planning on bringing a similar program to the heart of Blacktown.

Method

Parmesan Chicken

Recipe provided by Chef Lawrence from Impressions Cafe Workers Blacktown

Step 1 Crack the eggs into a large enough dish to fit chicken breast. Season eggs with salt and pepper, give them a light beat. Step 2 Chop the parsley finely (keep a few sprigs for garnish) and add half to egg mixture. Grate all the Parmesan cheese finely and add to egg mixture, mix well. Set aside. Step 3 Remove chicken skin if any, then butterfly cut your breast. Hold a long sharp knife along the thicker part of the breast, place your hand on top and slice through the breast almost until the end. Cut parallel to your cutting board and open the breast like a book. Place cling film on a board, add your breast spread open, sandwich it in cling film and flatten the thicker side using the flat side of a meat mallet or the underside of a saucepan Step 4 Get your wine and chicken stock portions ready, add the plain flour to a plate, spread it out flat by shaking plate. Peel the garlic and place in garlic press (or chop finely). Step 5 To a frying pan on moderate heat, add the olive oil and half the butter. Coat the chicken in the flour, shake off any excess flour. Step 6 Dip the chicken in the egg wash, make sure it’s totally covered and place in hot oil. Step 7 Cook chicken for approx. 4 minutes each side (depending on thickness). Flip over once brown and cook the other side. Transfer chicken to a hot plate and rest.

Step 8 To the same frying pan on full heat, add the white wine (alcohol can catch fire so be careful, turn off heat first if unsure). Add the chicken stock. Add the crushed garlic. Add the squeeze of half a lemon. And leave to reduce 2 minutes on high heat. Add the remaining half of chopped parsley. Add the remainder of butter and mix until butter is melted on very low heat. Return the chicken to the sauce and continue heating chicken on low heat no more than 30 seconds, serve the chicken on warm plates, garnished with parsley.

Ingredients - Serves 4 •2 chicken breasts

•1 garlic clove, 1 handful

•Half cup plain flour

of fresh parsley

•2 eggs

•4 tbsp olive oil

•50g - 2oz Parmesan cheese •4 tbsp butter •Half lemon •1 cup white wine •1 cup chicken stock
