L AK E N O N A S OC I AL M AGAZ INE VOLUME 1, ISSUE 10

HELLO AGAIN LAKE NONA!! I am so happy to be launching the Lake Nona Social Magazine again. Getting back to our lives (pre Covid-19) seems just around the corner. My family and I are THE social family, so this experience has been a struggle. However, we are still keeping people connected through our social media and for that we are so proud. Happy New Year from the Hickman family. Omar, Denee — and of course, Pizza.

HOW CAN WE AVOID IT? IT’S IN OUR NAME

veryone has been impacted one way or another by Covid-19. From losing jobs to losing family. It has been a challenge to say the least. We are slowly emerging from the darkness. And the best is yet to come. From everything I have been seeing online and reading about, it seems as though humanity is emerging a little bit different from this pandemic, maybe even a little wiser. Everyone took the time to reevaluate and contemplate their lives. We all had an opportunity to spend unlimited amounts of time with our families. And I believe we will come out of this better and stronger, human beings.

REGENOMICS Healing with the Synergy of Regenerative Medicine BY AMADO J. BOBADILLA CHRONIC JOINT PAIN? HOPING TO AVOID CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS OR SURGERY? Dr. Jose E. Barreto may have an answer. And it uses the body’s own resources to heal. It’s the kind of treatment that gives hope where, all too often, traditional medicine does not. What does he provide that his colleagues do not? It’s called Regenomics, a new medical office in Lake Nona that offers a holistic treatment approach that “…helps people address their pain, joint injuries and arthritis by optimizing their own body’s ability to heal. This is done without drugs or surgeries and it allows them to get back on the track and field of life;” an integrative, whole person approach.

Dr. Jose E. Barreto

Orthobiologics, one of the main services at Regenomics include different treatments such as Prolotherapy, PRGF and Lipogems. Prolotherapy (short for Proliferant Therapy), involves the injection of a solution of dextrose, lidocaine and saline into an affected joint, tendon or ligament to restart the healing process. In the case of PRGF blood is drawn from the patient’s veins and its platelets are separated from the red and white blood cells via centrifuge. This cre-

“Someone who is a smoker and obese may come into a practice with knee or back pain. Most physicians will do an exam, order an MRI and apply injections to help with the pain. At Regenomics, I will look at all factors. Without the proper environment, the body won’t be ready to heal. If I see a poor lifestyle: eating out of control, smoking and/or overall weakness, I’ll address those issues first before we start treatment. That way we’ll get the best possible outcome.”

ates PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma. Dr. Barreto’s treatment takes this process one step further, however. By activating the platelets, they will release the growth factors, which are key players in the healing process. He then injects this Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) into the affected area, eliciting both a more powerful, immediate response and a longer-lasting effect. For more severe conditions, Dr. Barreto utilizes Lipogems treatment, an FDAcleared medical device which takes fat (adipose tissue) from the abdomen or buttock area (under local anesthetic), “cleans” it and then injects it (along with its attendant stem cells) into the arthritic painful joint or injured tendon/ ligament, in order to promote healing which might not otherwise be possible. He says this procedure is ideal for more severe sports injuries and those awaiting knee or hip replacement surgery, yet hoping to either delay, or render it unnecessary.

DENEE HICKMAN

With Epigenetic Coaching, another service offered at Regenomics, Dr. Barreto’s team starts with a DNA screening process similar to that used by 23&Me or Ancestry DNA, but which also gathers genetic markers and other data that help them develop a plan of action to optimize every system and rhythm of the body. For example, one aspect of the Epigenetic Coaching assessment involves the client to wear a device for 3 days. The device will record the client’s physical responses to factors such as exercise, sleep, food consumption and stress, and provides a plan based on these measurements combined with the client’s genetic markers. “By the end of the assessment, we have a complete physiological profile,” Barreto says. “It tells us how the body is working and whether the client is sleeping, exercising or eating correctly, and at the right times (based on their genetic makeup). This allows us to provide specific recommendations for optimal health and

well-being. The client can turn on or off the right genes by changing how they eat or when they go to sleep. Their DNA is not their destiny, it is their potential.” With a medical specialty in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a sub specialty in Interventional Pain Management and Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Barreto says that his love relationship with therapeutic healing began when, at 15, he sustained a back injury playing baseball: his passion. “My life was baseball. But after the injury, I found something else I loved: rehabilitation and medicine. I loved the thought of using my hands to treat and help people. I felt hope. I felt re-energized. I felt excited about the new possibilities.” He says he came to Lake Nona five years ago and found it to be the ideal community for a practice such as Regenomics. “You feel the love and energy. The walking paths, trails, gym, pool—the community provides an environment

that leads people to be more active and interactive. It’s a fun, enjoyable and stimulating place to be!” The Regenomics Orthobiologics treatment plan includes the initial visit, a complete physical examination, diagnostic ultrasound, advanced Neuromuscular mapping with NeuFit (an electrical stimulation device that can be used for rehabilitation, fitness and/ or performance) and treatment recommendations. The initial visit is only one hour and costs $250, (as an introductory offer). His Epigenetic Coaching programs are available in three tiers and can include as many counseling sessions or labs as the client chooses. A Health-span and Longevity Medicine Program will be available soon. Payment plans are available, as these treatments and programs are not covered by any of the insurance companies. Contact the office for more information. l Regenomics 12617 Narcoossee Road, Suite 112 Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (407) 270-7900 info@regenomics.me www.regenomics.me

NEIGHBORHOOD BARRE | HEALTH & WELLNESS

Not Your Usual Workout, BUT YOU WILL BE SWEATIN’ FOR SURE… BY KAVERI VALLIAPPAN

A

s I walked into the Neighborhood Barre studio located in the heart of Lake Nona, I was ready to tackle my inner ballerina—even if it was 6am! It felt peaceful, and not like the usual hustle and bustle of a gym where you are waiting for someone to walk away so you could sneak in your 3 sets. With the feel of a yoga studio (which they do offer—keep reading) the workout will keep you burning and sweating before you even realize it. Yoga mats, dumbbells, weighted wristlets and stretch bands are ready for you to use in your own station—socially distanced of course! While part of the workout is done on mat, the core of the workout is done on the ballet bar. This is where you will “tuck…squeeze...drop...hold” to strengthen the whole body from your head to your tippy toes.

So why Lake Nona?

MAXINE SUDARMA

The owner of this charming studio, Elizabeth Diaz, opened Neighborhood Barre in July of this year. She wanted to bring her love of Barre to her new home. Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio and having worked for the USTA, Elizabeth rekindled her passion for barre while on a work trip. Always wanting to open up a studio, Neighborhood Barre is the only one in Florida! “The name says it all. Neighborhood Barre is a sense of community and that is what Lake Nona is all about— community!” says Elizabeth. What better place to open up the first one?

Do they offer more than Barre Classes?

Yes, they do. The studio just opened up Power Yoga classes to all levels. There are also various Barre classes to choose from if you want to mix it up. Any level from novice to expert is welcome.

How is the studio ensuring safety in our new normal of COVID-19?

Every station is wiped, cleaned and sanitized. After each class, Elizabeth and her team of instructors place out

new mats and equipment. Little baskets are close by for personal belongings—like your mask and phone. l The studio does offer one free class and a 2-week special offer of unlimited classes. HEALTH & WELLNESS | XL SOCCER

SOCCER FOR

EVERYONE

XL Soccer World Brings a World of Fun to Lake Nona BY AMADO J. BOBADILLA

T

“It doesn’t get any better than this,” says Charlie’s mom. “Yeah,” quips his dad. “Where else can you go for this kind of excitement, where the kids are having the time of their lives and learning life skills at the same time? It’s really fun for the whole family.” “And that’s just the point,” says Grace Bowman, General Manager of XL Soccer World Lake Nona. “What we’re about here is providing a place where families can hang out and build memories together as they engage in the fun and discipline of an incredibly exciting sport. Tots, kids, adults—all can experience the thrill of being on the field while their friends and family members cheer them on. We want XL Soccer World Lake Nona to be the

14 N O N A M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E 1 0

place where people of all ages can come and experience the highlight of their day.” After an extremely successful run with their Winter Park facility, the company is opening their Lake Nona complex, the first of their 10 locations nationwide to be built from the ground up, rather than being a renovated tennis club or repurposed warehouse. XL Soccer World Lake Nona, Bowman says, will be a fully air conditioned, state-of-the art indoor soccer facility boasting two full-sized fields (with surrounding backboards) and equipped with fifth generation (5G) artificial turf that closely simulates the traction of natural grass. Electronic scoreboards that can be controlled by guests grace each field, and video recording and playback is available for all adult games. In addition, XL Soccer World Lake Nona boasts two full sized hardfloored courts for volleyball and futsal, a soccer-like game played

with a smaller, heavier ball that is more passing-intensive than regular soccer. In fact, they are the only fully air conditioned, dedicated hardfloored courts of their kind in Central Florida. There are ample locker room facilities and a spacious changing area. And, as a hat tip to the Lake Nona lifestyle, there is abundant bicycle parking for those who embrace an all-around athletic experience. For the fans, there is a leisure bar, restaurant and lounge area snuggled between the soccer fields and overlooking the Futsal courts, immersing guests in the action while allowing them to enjoy their favorite beverages and comfort foods as they cheer on their players from their full field viewing or strategically positioned large-screen TVs. “We want to provide a place where moms can bring the kids, socialize and share a glass of wine as they watch their kids’ teams play soccer,” Bowman says.

DENEE HICKMAN

he kids gather on the field for one last drive at the goal. Charlie has a corner kick. Hearts pounding, players on both sides anticipate. They’ve trained long and hard and it’s all come down to this. Parents, families and other onlookers cheer. The air is electric. Charlie sets the ball and team work takes it right to the goal for the final point. And the win.

And, incidentally, teamwork is a part of the warp and woof of XL Soccer World Lake Nona. There are team programs for all ages, each one beginning with soccer, but enriching the participants’ lives with so much more. Perhaps the most ambitious program XL Soccer Lake Nona will offer is their soccer ACADEMY, which they will extend from their Winter Park facility. The ACADEMY recruits, then trains driven and talented young people in a full-time, integrated program of academics and athletics to identify and prepare the professional soccer stars of tomorrow. Led by the ex-Leeds United, Manchester United and England star, Alan Smith, and ex-Orlando City star, Luke Boden, the ACADEMY teaches soccer but also life skills such as the importance of achievement, teamwork and character. Bowman says the hope is to have a hugely positive impact on the lives of ACADEMY participants, while

finding the next International player. Whether their students go on to play professional soccer or not, his hope is that they will find college scholarships and integrate the skills learned at the ACADEMY into whatever field of endeavor they pursue. “Teamwork, focus, emotional intelligence and positive attitude are the primary fundamentals that we teach our students (clients) that translate well to the business world and to everyday life,” Bowman says. We want them to be disciplined, passionate and fully committed to making a success of anything they do in life,” she says. In addition to the indoor fields, there are plans to develop full-sized, professional outdoor fields and training areas in the near future. All can be booked directly for private use by individuals, teams, corporations or for family gatherings. In addition, there are three interconnected break out

rooms for birthday parties and other family events or for corporate meetings and training. Each room seats 20 comfortably for a total of 60 when all are connected. A variety of leagues are available for those wishing to compete in organized tournaments with equipment and referees at all talent levels. XL Soccer World Lake Nona also offers regular pick up sessions for individuals wishing to find and play on teams, a must for those new to the Lake Nona area who would like to integrate quickly, and find and make new friends. After school programs are also available. l XL Soccer World Lake Nona 12314 Suttner Ave. Orlando, FL 32827 nona@xlsportsworld.com (407) 641-4791 For additional information, please visit the XL Soccer World Lake Nona website: www.xlnona.com or Facebook @xlnona

LEAVING A

LEGACY

FINANCIAL TEAM INVESTS FOR CLIENTS’ FUTURE BY AMADO J. BOBADILLA

The duo applies that same driving, uncompromising aplomb to developing financial strategies for their clients. The two have served the financial planning and investment needs of a wide variety of clients since 2013 in downtown Orlando. In June of this year, amid the pandemic, they opened a Lake Nona office. It was the perfect fit for two un-

16 N O N A M A G A Z I N E | I S S U E 1 0

compromising professionals searching for their niche. “Lake Nona is a young, innovative, entrepreneurial community,” Navarrete says. “We’re both career-minded entrepreneurs. We’re young, we’re married, we have kids. We know what Lake Nona is all about. Living here makes me feel like I’m part of a movement; like I’m making the world a better place. It’s a very innovative little city here and everyone is looking for growth.” “It’s a city looking and moving toward the future, and that’s what our company is all about: preparing the next generation,” Rodriguez adds.

DENEE HICKMAN

F

elipe Navarrete and Luis Rodriguez have long been competitive. In fact, they met at a friend’s birthday party trying to one-up each other at ping pong and cornhole. In their intense—albeit good-natured— jockeying for ascendency that day, a friendship formed that has gone on to pay great dividends for them.

The duo’s approach to financial planning and investing is just as innovative and creative as the community they serve. “All financial planning firms carry similar product offerings,” Navarrete says. “Many financial advisors often focus on what products they can sell you. We are concerned with deeper areas of your financial goals, ‘such as how we can plan to save for your family over the next 20-30 years or planning for something happening to your business partner and what comes next for the business.” When Navarrete and Rodriguez first meet with a new client, they say they don’t even talk about product offerings. They make it a priority to try to understand what their clients’ position is financially, considering what their balance sheet looks like and what it should look like in 10 years to reach their goals. “What sets us apart is who we are,” Navarrete says, adding that he and Rodriguez are entrepreneurs themselves and not just financial advisors. “We’re younger, and we own our own businesses. We’re building a coffee shop down the street, we own a transportation network of trucks and we have apps for sale in the app store. We’re consistently investing outside our present scope and looking to grow into new areas of business so we can better relate to our clients and understand how their businesses work.” The two work closely with their client’s CPAs to develop effective fiscal strategies. They also work closely with estate planning attorneys for the most effective game plan for their clients’ financial future. “Our typical client is in their 30s and married with kids,” Navarrete says. “If something happens to them, their kids will need financial stability. Even with life insurance as part of your plan, you still may need to set up a will and a trust in order for it all to function properly.” Another arm of the business helps professional athletes manage their earnings, a discipline well suited to Luis Rodriguez,

who played for the New York Mets from 2004 to 2006. After a shoulder injury forced his retirement, he moved to Central Florida, acquired a degree in sports management and became an agent. Under the banner of R&S Sports, he represented professional baseball players. He then met Navarrete and came to understand the game plan offered by Northwestern Mutual. At 33, he says, through Navarrete’s coaching, his eyes were opened to what was fiscally possible. The two added a business partnership to their already fast friendship, and, today, he counsels professional athletes, helping them make the most of their assets while at the peak of their earning potential. “My focus is educating professional athletes in the Spanish community the same way Felipe educated me,” Rodriguez says. “I have friends and clients who, like me, came from nothing into a lot of money. Because of a lack of planning, I’ve also seen these same people lose most of their money. Athletes need someone they can trust, who understands where they are, who can guide them where they need to go when they retire.” His clients include professional baseball, soccer and basketball players for whom he works tirelessly to build a legacy for them and their families., “I once heard a speaker ask a crowd, ‘how many of you can name at least two or three of your great-great-grandparents?” Navarrete says. “That got me thinking about leaving a legacy and that’s what we want to build for our clients.” l

1000 Legion Place, Suite 1400 Orlando, FL 32801 407. 440.6008 Northwestern Mutual is the marketing name for The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Milwaukee, WI (NM) (life and disability insurance, annuities, and life insurance with long-term care benefits) and its subsidiaries. She’s not kidding. A quick perusal of the facilities quickly convinces that the property is well suited to the entrepreneurial, Lake Nona lifestyle. For starters, first floor of the clubhouse offers a luxurious lounge area around a big screen TV for socializing with friends, business discussions with clients and waiting for Lyft or Uber service. There is a spacious kitchen area with tables and seating for 12 or more and a café (offering wine, coffee, tea or hot chocolate) for socializing or informal business gatherings. There are even two iMac computers attached to a remote printer. Fast, Wi-Fi is available throughout the building.

“Our design and amenities provide our residents with all they’ll need without having to leave the community,” says Ashleen Pellerin, a Leasing Professional at The Oasis at Moss Park Preserve. “It really sets us apart.”

Upstairs, the fitness center boasts an array of machines and work out equipment one might expect in a membership-based spa or health club: treadmills, stair steppers, ellipticals, rowing machines, TRX gear, and a wide assortment of free weights. Also provided is the “Fitness on Demand-TM,” big-screen aerobics room where you can spin with a virtual trainer through mountains, forests or other scenic routes or take virtual yoga and Pilates classes. Both fitness rooms are accessible day or night with a resident’s key fob. A step outside brings you to the Beach Entry Pool, a salt water swimming area purified by a natural cleansing process that is both easier on the eyes and less harsh on the skin. It’s called Beach Entry because it features a stairless, sloping ramp that allows users to enter and remain at whichever level they choose without having to submerge completely—a feature especially helpful for families with young children. The pool is long enough to provide an adequate workout for lap swimmers. There’s a cabana area and chaise lounges for sunning, snoozing or schmoozing and there are lawn games available like corn hole and giant chess.

PRETTY IN PINK Our second annual “Pretty in Pink” breast cancer awareness brunch was a little smaller than usual, but it made a big impact.

Advent Health’s Oncologist Dr. Sarah George provided informative talks and knowledge. We now have a better understanding about the importance of well care, breast cancer, and women’s health.

Eagle Creek Golf Club provided a beautiful venue with delicious food and set the best ambiance. A BIG thank you to our Title Sponsor, Advent Health. And to Unik Title LLC, Seda Gulliver Realtor, and Poppy Flower Truck for your support in this wonderful event. You all have made this event even more special.
