news Tenors and basses - can you help us out ? The Danesborough Chorus urgently needs more tenors and basses for its summer concert. news RHS Supershoes

Award-winning children’s cancer charity Supershoes has announced they will have an Artisan garden at RHS Chelsea this year, aptly named “Laced with Hope.” Sarah White, Founder of the Milton Keynes-based charity said: “This is a tremendous opportunity to raise awareness of childhood cancer, giving a voice to the 11 children diagnosed every day in the UK, whilst highlighting the work our charity does nationally to empower these young people.” Designed by Kent-based Laura Anstiss, the garden gives an insight into the emotions felt by a child diagnosed with cancer, taking their own steps on the challenging journey through treatment. The message is very much one of thoughts, wishes and hope intertwined with the mix of emotions that the child, together with their family, go through at such a time. The use of sculpture, shapes, texture and colours in the garden is a beautiful representation of how the charity itself uses artwork to uplift a child who has been diagnosed with cancer and a tribute to the time and talent that over 300 volunteer artists give to this cause every single time they sit down to design and paint customised shoes for individual children, unique to each child.

14

Designer Laura, who has also displayed her considerable creative talents working alongside Alan Titchmarsh and the team on ITV’s Love Your Garden, said: “I have always aspired to design a garden at RHS Chelsea, the world’s greatest flower show, and Supershoes’ inspiring mission to empower children battling this terrible disease is both incredibly important and touching. My aim is to bring beauty, strength and fun together in the design of the garden and to send the compelling message that children need to hold onto their identity and express themselves, especially when they’re going through the biggest challenge of their young lives.” The garden is sponsored by Frosts Garden Centres, whose flagship site is in Woburn Sands. The Laced with Hope garden will be built by 2016 Chelsea gold medal winner Frosts Landscape Construction, whose Managing

Director, Ken White, is also a Trustee for the Charity. Ken said: “The team at Frosts are looking forward to building the Laced with Hope Artisan Garden. The charity has been supported by Frosts Landscapes since its inception.” About Supershoes Supershoes is a national charity, founded almost 5 years ago, by Sarah and Ken White. The charity now receives over 30 referrals a week for requests for shoes. With over 300 Super Artists, and a team of support staff, Supershoes is staffed entirely by volunteers and has, at the beginning of this year, sent out its 2000th pair of customised trainers. Future plans to empower children include hospital art workshops and local “Arty Parties” for families of children with cancer, including siblings. What does a pair of Supershoes bring to a sick child?

Every single day in the UK, 11 children are diagnosed with cancer. Our aim is to continue to support families dealing with diagnosis and treatment and to raise awareness of childhood cancer nationwide.

Your April Garden It is hard to believe that we had snow at the beginning of last month. Everything has slowed down since then but hopefully April will bring warmth and colour back to our gardens. But beware, even now we can have hard frosts so don’t be tempted to plant out tender plants just yet. Jobs for the garden • Deadhead early flowering primulas as early as possible, as they tend to cross-breed very easily. • Early April is your last opportunity to hardprune late-flowering shrubs. Make sure that you cut out all of the dead or diseased growth then cut to a pleasing shape. • Stake your perennials before it’s too late. Use decorative plant supports or create attractive willow or hazel structures. • Tackle the weeding: if you defeat them in April and May, some will give up, and you can take it easy in June. Many weeds can be composted at this time of year as they are not seeding yet but if you are unsure throw them out or burn them to be sure. • Start spraying roses with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn. Remember that if an infection sets it, all the stricken leaves must be burnt. Tie in climbing and rambling roses • It’s a good time to clean the glass on your greenhouse to make the most of the increasing light levels. You can just use soap and water. • Many vegetables can be sown if conditions permit. Plant shallots, garlic, and onion sets - all are hardy. Plant early potatoes - but protect from frost.

Flowering Currant Ribes sanguineum One of the first to bloom each year this deciduous shrub is easy to grow. Remember to prune after flowering to ensure a show the following year.

22

Tip of the Month

Looking after your Lawn

After a winter of wet and cold, your lawn will benefit from a bit of TLC now. Start mowing once a week, beginning with the blades at the highest setting and gradually lowering them over the weeks. If there are not too many weeds, leave the box off as a sprinkling of fine grass cuttings helps put back organic matter into the lawn. To make the job look finished,

trim the lawn’s edges with long-handled shears or a grass trimmer. Bare or thin patches of grass can be thickened up by raking over the surface and then resowing. Lastly, give the lawn a feed. If it contains weeds or moss, treat these at the same time with a weed, feed and mosskiller treatment.

Plant a butterfly garden

By Rachael Leverton

Winston Churchill loved butterflies so much he had a garden designed specifically to attract them. His family home was the beautiful Chartwell, but you really don’t need a grand estate to attract butterflies. When planting for butterflies we need to consider their life-cycle. Butterflies choose to lay their eggs where there is a good food supply for their caterpillar hungry offspring. A patch of nettles in a sunny spot is all you need to attract the red admiral, the small tortoiseshell, the painted lady and the peacock. If you want the common blue (though sadly these are not that common now) plant some birdsfoot trefoil, also known as lady’s fingers and properly named lotus corniculatus. A packet of sweet rocket seeds (hesperis matronalis) is a good investment. One pack produces flowers in all shades of lilac. They have a sweet scent, which is more powerful in the evening, and as a bonus they attract the orange tip butterfly. The most famous butterfly-attracting plant is probably Buddleia davidii, hence its other name, the butterfly bush. It grows well in most soils but needs to be pruned back hard every year. Don’t worry too much if you know very little about pruning, Buddleias are hard to kill!

Caryopteris clandonensis, or to use its more romantic name, blue mist spirea is also a wonderful butterfly magnet and very easy to grow. You can now buy packets of wild flower seeds and butterfly mixes. Try some among your borders and you’ll be rewarded with fluttering, jewel-like visitors all summer.

Sedum spectabile must be one of the easiest plants ever to grow and even thrives in poor soil. Its dusky pink flowers are always smothered in butterflies and bees when they open in late summer. www.bletchleybuzz.co.uk

Rock Chorus - The Big Gig! SPONSORED BY THE LIONS CLUB OF BLETCHLEY, MILTON KEYNES

…………………………………………………………………………. *** THE VENUE, Milton Keynes *** ................................................................................................................. Saturday 21st April 2018 @ 7.30pm …………………………………………………………………………. It might not be the eighth wonder of the world but it’s definitely the eighth time the five Rock Chorus choirs have joined together to perform and raise money for charity, at this annual concert. In a world of uncertainty you can depend on having a great time listening to (and maybe even joining in with!) these fabulous arrangements of hit songs from the last few decades. You won’t believe how good you’ll feel at the end! (The audience participation bit is not compulsory but hey ... who’s listening?) Led by top singer, songwriter, vocal coach and force of nature, Lauren Field, the aim is for maximum enjoyment for both the 100 plus singers and 300 plus audience alike. The concert is again supported by Marshall Amps and, as usual, organised by the Lions Club of Bletchley. Proceeds this year will be shared between MACMILLAN NURSES and the Lions Charity Fund, which meets requests for help from those less fortunate than ourselves. The concerts have already raised well over £20,000 for good causes, plus a wealth of HAPPY, so don’t delay, book NOW for another great nights’ entertainment.

Tickets £15 / £12

(Some booking fees may apply)
