Welcome to the Autumn edition of Bletchley Buzz Did you enjoy the 20 Questions from last month?

Bletchley Buzz is your local magazine for Bletchley, Fenny Stratford, Newton Leys and Newton Longville

It was definitely a conversation starter over dinner with the girls, we laughed and nearly cried at some of the answers that we never knew about each other. It just shows that you don’t really know anyone until you engage in conversation with them – I would love to hear some of your answers. I thought I would get out and about so I visited Newton Longville – What a beautiful place. Everyone was very friendly and supportive of Bletchley Buzz. You can pop into The Crooked Billet they were very kind to allow copies to be left for their customers to read while they are enjoying Lunch or Dinner

Help Nurse Naomi Raise ÂŁ2018! Senior sister Naomi Avery has set herself the incredible challenge of running and cycling 2018 kilometres to raise ÂŁ2018 in 2018! Naomi, who works on Ward 23 at Milton Keynes University Hospital has already pounded the streets and pedalled a huge proportion of the 'trip', clocking up over 14000km which equates to a staggering 112 hours of running and 17 hours of cycling. Last month she even took to the hills to do a mountain run in Switzerland to get a few more laps under her belt. 'The idea came to me earlier this year,' says Naomi. 'I've always loved running and biking, so I set myself this huge challenge. Then I decided it would be amazing if I could raise the equivalent amount in donations. Everything raised will be used on my ward to buy those little extra comforts and additional items that the NHS doesn't provide.' Naomi, who belongs to MK Redway Runners, is hoping to clock up her complete total in the Winter Half Marathon in Milton Keynes in December. Before then she has to complete the London to Brighton Cycle Ride and the Bedford Half Marathon, to name a few. Not surprisingly, she's enlisted the support of a coach to ensure she maintains stamina and avoids injury. 'When I told her the list of events I was planning to take part in, I think she was bemused to say the least, but so far, I'm on target to reach my goal.' Naomi would love people to donate to her amazing challenge. Anything is welcome, no matter how big or small. Please visit Naomi's justgiving page for more information www.justgiving.com/fundraising/naomi-avery1 or contact the Fundraising team at Milton Keynes Hospital Charity on 01908 996220 or email fundraising@mkuh.nhs.uk

The Rotary Club of Bletchley recently invited Padma Cheriyan to talk about her local campaigns to help blind or partiallysighted people overcome the difďŹ culties they face in everyday life. Padma, who won a Milton Keynes Women Leaders award for her outstanding contribution to the community, told club members about the isolation that often occurs when people have to leave work, stop driving and give up many social activities due to failing eyesight. Kelvin Hack, acting president of the club, says “We were really impressed to learn that Padma has set up Yoga, Tai Chi and even ballroom dancing classes for local blind people to give them a fresh interest in life. We also learned about her ongoing campaign to get a new ‘Beacon’ system up and running in CMK’s shopping centre, so that visually impaired people can be independent and ďŹ nd the shops they are looking for through their mobile phones.â€? Milton Keynes: The People’s Stories edited by Anouska Lester 4'45,<!6.34';< 7 -95:69<47< ';60(820 397<9<7:860<:8<:;11% We have collected thousands of hours of interviews from local people – about wartime, depression, new communities, work, young life and old age – celebrated in radio documentaries, musical plays, photographic and art exhibitions, sculpture and dance, as well as books and ďŹ lms. In January 2017, Milton Keynes celebrated its 50th birthday. Inspired by this anniversary, Living Archive MK set out to capture local memories and interviewed more than 50 people. They recorded the stories of a wide range of people, from those early pioneers who arrived 50 years ago, to those who have been drawn here in recent years. From those existing residents who faced the upheaval of a city being built around them, to those who were born here and have always called it home. From these ordinary people come a series of extraordinary stories, covering work, transport, community, arts, heritage, and music. Read about: • how a community show opened the new Milton Keynes theatre • the special bylaws that allowed the redways to be built • the rise and fall of the National Hockey Stadium • how the secrets of Bletchley Park were ďŹ rst revealed to the public • the builder who delivered the concrete for the concrete cows

8

• how a stilt-walker got into trouble for appearing in the famous red balloon advert. In these pages, more than 50 residents of Milton Keynes reveal their memories of the town’s past and their hopes for its future. Their stories are a celebration of community and culture in a unique and sometimes misunderstood town. Featuring personal stories collected from interviews, and hidden gems from Living Archive MK’s photographic collection, this book is the portrait of a city through a selection of its residents – the story of Milton Keynes in the words of its people. #*/.* .12 0,2 2 ".&'2 2 ,0$ (((!./#/+ *,%)/#1!0, !& 20,2 -1.1")0+120+2 2

Local Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Group urgently needs help for its Oxygen Therapy programme 02%*+2 0&2)1." 2 )12 2

The MK Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Therapy Centre, based in Stacey Bushes, has launched an urgent appeal for volunteers to help with its Hyperbaric Oxygenation (oxygen under pressure) Therapy programme. The Centre, which is totally independent and self-funding, is reliant on the generosity and goodwill of Milton Keynes and surrounding areas. To date it has relied heavily on a small group of very dedicated volunteers (most of whom have MS and other conditions). However, it now ďŹ nds itself running short of vital volunteer help. The Centre offers a range of alternative therapies for people who have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and a variety of

other conditions. It aims to be a place where people can come to receive support, make friends and receive therapies in a non-clinical environment. Some of the therapies offered are reexology, reiki, massage and shiatsu. It is the only service in Milton Keynes with a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber.

Lisa Weatherhead, volunteer HBO Manager explains; “HBO offers vital treatment for our clients and without more volunteers, we may ďŹ nd ourselves in the position to have to reduce services. No previous health related experience is needed. We offer full training and support and there are always two people running each session. I can’t stress enough how important this service is for our continued client care and wellbeing. We would be very grateful to receive some more help for the Centre.â€? The Centre also needs more volunteers for reception, administration, fundraising and general duties.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), which is very safe, involves breathing pure oxygen under pressure, through a mask or mouthpiece. HBOT is not a cure for MS, but many clients get at least temporary relief of some of their symptoms which improves their quality of life. There is also evidence that HBOT beneďŹ ts acute injuries, diabetic non-healing wounds and some facial cancers. It may also be useful in cerebral palsy and ďŹ bromyalgia.

If you wish to find out more about HBOT and volunteering with us please contact the Centre on 01908 225907, email mkmstherapygroup@btconnect.com or visit mkmstherapygroup.btck.co.uk 10

BULLYING

What if your child is the bully? 0<29/,3:;6 7<:;9.3;6 78/52;2<;-(966977;2# ;77<47<(/11045,<958:3;6 14::1;<,461# <73;<7942% I couldn't believe it!" said Amy, "Tess wasn't the bullying type!â€? Her teacher explained that the girl had complained of being ostracised. This was upsetting but fairly normal behaviour among eight-year-old girls. Then her property started to go missing and was found stuffed in toilets or left outside in the rain. Finally, the teacher caught Tess red-handed cutting holes in the other girl's coat with scissors she'd smuggled in from home! Amy felt terrible. "I was horriďŹ ed. This is not the way she was brought up. Worse, I hadn't got a clue how to deal with it.â€? Amy told her husband, who was naturally furious with Tess, but they decided that simply going off at the deep-end might prove counter-productive. Fortunately, Amy’s sister Sarah is a childpsychologist, so she rang her for advice.

to lack self-control and y off the handle using aggressive behaviour. 'Controlling bullies' like Tess often see little downside to their behaviour because adults don't see the evidence or ďŹ nd it hard to believe. “We realised this probably started around the time her brother was born. Tess suddenly lost most of our attention and was expected to be the perfect older sister, help out and put her needs on hold much of the time. We'd kind of forgotten she was still a little girl, who needed us.â€?

Sarah was great. She told us that while it's never pleasant to realise your child might be bullying others, it's behaviour which needs to be confronted or it can escalate.

Sarah’s solution was simple. "Admit, atone, apologise." Tess needed to acknowledge what happened, to understand that her actions were hurtful and harmful, and to say sorry.

What shocked Amy and her husband most was that Tess would not initially admit she’d done wrong. She was what Sarah called 'a controlling bully'. She was bright, pretty, good at reading social situations, charming to adults and popular with her peers. 'Victim bullies', the other type tend

"In the end we sat her down and apologised for our behaviour, demonstrating that we accepted we had not behaved as well as we could. Then we asked her gently what the other girl had done to offend her so much that destroying her belongings seemed

appropriate.â€? At that point Tess broke down. She quite liked the other girl she said, but she was angry with her and sad because every Friday the other girl's mum collected her, and they went for tea and cake at the local cafe and talked about their day. There were other things too; this girl had great outďŹ ts for school dress-up days and brought in cakes that she and her mum had baked and iced together. "On the surface these were superďŹ cial silly things,â€? says Amy, “But it became clear Tess wanted more time with me. She didn't feel she could ask so all her feelings of anger towards me were being directed towards this other poor child.â€? In the end Tess made a card for the girl and apologised to her and her mother. “We replaced her coat and invited her for tea. Incredibly she accepted,â€? says Amy, “And they’ve become friends. I am much more aware now of how my own behaviour can affect the behaviour of my children.â€? By Louise Addison

Gardening

Your Garden in Autumn Although we had some amazingly warm days this September, autumn is now definitely here, and the days are decidedly shorter. This is the time of change, from summer pinks and blues to the autumn oranges and reds. As the leaves fall, raking them will provide lots of lovely leaf mould for use next year.

Topical Tips – Protecting your plants

JOBS FOR THE GARDEN Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly, bag up or add to compost bins for beautiful leaf mould next year Keep dead- heading and cut back perennials that have died down but leave the more tender ones such as Penstemon and Salvia until spring. Plant all spring bulbs except tulips which need to wait until next month For those of us with clay soil, now is the perfect time to improve it with composts and mulch before it becomes too wet or frozen Harvest orchard fruit - store only those in perfect condition. Pick and ripen squash and pumpkin: stand them outdoors on a slatted surface and bring under cover if frosty. Lift remaining maincrop potatoes Prune climbing roses Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf but make sure the soil is well prepared first.

22

Now is the time to start thinking about which plants need protection from frost and other winter weather conditions. Mulch borders to keep in warmth, suppress weeds and improve the soil. Lay a layer of 6 to 8 inches of wood chips or straw over perennial and flower beds. Protect outdoor plants with screens or frames and make sure to water before a freeze. Moist soil holds more heat than dry soil but frozen soil can kill so protect it first. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into the greenhouse. Fuchsias and dahlias can be left until their top growth is touched by frost, but bananas, lantanas and pelargoniums will do better without frosting. With plants that spend winter outside, once frost has touched plants such as Agapanthus, cut off frosted leaves and cover crowns with a protective mulch such as fleece or netting pegged down. Avoid plastic, as this prevents air reaching the crowns and may cause rotting. Move plants in pots, such as Agave and Cordyline to a wall for protection. This also applies to otherwise hardy plants, such as Camellia, because when the soil in the open garden becomes frozen it can kill plants which we want for a fantastic display next year.

Recipe

A cute and seasonal supper Serves: 4

For the pepper lanterns

Preparation time: 20 mins

Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas Mark 4. Use a sharp knife to slice the top off each pepper horizontally. Don’t discard these tops as they will ne the little hats for the pepper lanterns. Deseed the peppers. Rinse and pat dry with kitchen towel. Use a small paring knife to cut holes into the exterior of the peppers to make pumpkinlantern style faces. If the peppers don't stand upright, slice a small amount from the bottom to flatten the surface.

Cooking time: 25 mins

Ingredients 4 Orange peppers 200g Cooked brown rice 1 tbsp Sunflower oil 450g Minced beef or turkey 1 Medium onion finely chopped 225g Mixed mushrooms, chopped 350g jar roasted red pepper sauce 1 tsp Dried oregano ¼ tsp Chilli flakes Salt and pepper to taste

24

Method

Cook rice according to package directions. Lightly oil a baking tray. Arrange the peppers and their tops on the tray and cook in the oven for 20 minutes, or until peppers are cooked, but still are still firm. They mustn’t collapse! Remove peppers from oven and allow to cool while you make the filling. For the filling Heat 1 tbsp oil in large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and mushrooms and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until the mushrooms have softened and reduced in size. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add mince, herbs and chilli flakes and continue to cook, stirring occasionally until browned. Drain the excess oil. Reduce heat to low, then add the pepper sauce and cooked rice. Stir to combine and cook for 2-3 more minutes, or until mixture is heated through. Fill each pepper to the brim, allow the mixture to spill over slightly. Place a top on to each stuffed pepper and serve with green salad. Tell our advertisers you found them in Bletchley Buzz

Seminar Self-Defense For Everyone 7 October from 15:00-18:00 Total Dojo 28 The Concourse, Brunel Centre, MK2 2HE Milton Keynes Beautiful place for training- Total Dojo in Milton Keynes. While many of Krav Maga's techniques and tactics are certainly singular in their effectiveness, it is the exclusive delivery system that Krav Maga utilizes to train its operators that quite possibly sets it apart from other self-defense training systems. Techniques, in a vacuum, are useless. Without developing aggressiveness or fighting spirit in students, the techniques will not matter, because under duress the defender will be unable to react in a timely or

effective manner. The student/defender must train in a way that will promote and enhance decisive action under extreme stress and/or fatigue. Therefore, Krav Maga places a great premium on "training methodology" as one of the most important ways to enhance survivability in a violent encounter. Invite your friends and your family.
