LOCAL NEWS The Lions Club of Bletchley assisted with some of the cost of transport for Nicole to travel by train to University College Hospital, Euston Road, London.

Nicole Phillips from Soulbury has a brain tumour and is traveling to London University Collage hospital Euston for radiotherapy every working day for 6 weeks, radiotherapy is when you have a series of short daily sessions on weekdays over a six-week period, Nicole has been to hospital for a mask fitting to wear during radiotherapy, this keeps her head still so that the treatment is effective. Radiotherapy uses high-energy rays to destroy tumour cells and we hope this treatment will cure Nicole. The Lions Club of Bletchley has donated £300 and many other people have donated money, also the Soulbury residents have organised a roster for getting Nicole to Leighton Buzzard Station and home and getting her children Megan and Ellen to school. The Lion Clubs in the UK have pledge to help raise 1 million pounds to help brain tumour research, which will bring hope to thousands of families affected by brain tumour each year. One of the goals for the Lions is to build a “UK Lions Laboratory” for brain tumour research. Our motto is "We Serve." Lions are part of a global service network, doing whatever is necessary to help our local communities.

MILTON KEYNES AND DISTRICT BRANCH OF CATS PROTECTION SEEKS URGENT HELP AND SUPPORT TO GET BACK UP AND RUNNING AFTER THE STORMS HAVE CAUSED SIGNIFICANT WATER DAMAGE TO STORED GOODS IN THE STORAGE UNIT. Aimee Purnell says, “We are absolutely devastated by the news. The branch is run entirely by volunteers and we rely heavily on the support of the public and local businesses to support our cause so this will hit us hard. “Sadly, many of our stored goods such as cat food, litter, toys, fundraising equipment and merchandise that we sell at fundraisers has been damaged and is now unusable. We receive no government funding to look after the large number of cats and kittens that come into us each year, and are now appealing for help in raising funds to replace these items. “We would like to say a massive thank you to the public for their kind donations to our JustGiving page so far, raising 40% of our £2000 target in just 12 hours from the start of the appeal on 29th May 2018.” If you would like to donate, please visit www.JustGiving.co.uk/FoodStoreFlood Our Amazon wishlist is available for purchasing goods www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls /24BHINAMTQ5EF/ref=cm_go_nav_hz A food drop off point has been set up at our shop in Newton Leys. Thank you from all of us at Cats Protection Milton Keynes in advance. Cats Protection’s Milton Keynes shop is part of the charity’s national network of over 250 volunteer-run branches, 34 centres and 110 shops that together help around 190,000 cats and kittens each year.

Bike Show returns to Milton Keynes The MK Bike Show returns to Milton Keynes this year for a celebration of all things motorcycling. With exhibitors including local bike dealers, training organisations, bike clubs and bike tour organisers, whatever your interest in bikes there’s something for everyone. And best of all, the event, which takes place 10am – 4pm on Sunday 8th July at the MK Dons Stadium, is free to enter with free parking! The event is run by Milton Keynes Advanced Motorists (MKAM) bike section in conjunction with Milton Keynes Council and Bucks Fire Services. The show aims to represent the interests of the motorcycling community of Milton Keynes and the surrounding area while bringing all those involved together for a day of talking, sharing and fun. “Our ďŹ rst event two years ago was so successful that we knew we had to do it again,â€? said Ian Souter, MKAM Chair. “This year is even bigger and better than before with more exhibitors, clubs and show bikes.â€? The Inner Concourse, sponsored by Green-Mopeds.com, will house the specialist trades, clubs and the show bikes. The classic bike show will cover the last 50 years of motorcycling, coincidentally, the same age as Milton Keynes. All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Blood Bikes charity SERV. MK Bike Show chairman, Dave Macey said, “We’re delighted to be able to hold the event at StadiumMK, the home of the MK Dons without whose support we could not have staged this event.â€? In line with the club ethos this will be a family event so bring everyone down to say hello. The 2016 show attracted an estimated 5,000 people and this year, with an additional indoor show area, we will be able to cater for even more. Up to date information will be available on the website and social media. www.mkbikeshow.co.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/MKBikeShow Twitter: @MKBikeShow

A spokesperson at Primark said:: “Working with the joint owners of centre:mk, we have achieved our longstanding objective of bringing Primark to the city centre in a store that will be emblematic of our brand.

SUPERSHOES Helping make poorly children feel super-special

Hello, and welcome to Supershoes! In case you don’t know who, what or where we are, allow me to explain. But first, I’d like to thank Kelly and the team at the Bletchley Buzz for giving us some space in this issue. We’re unique, in that although we’re locally based, our brief is nationwide. Our office is in Fenny Stratford, although we started at my kitchen table in 2013, with me, Sarah White and my husband Ken. Supershoes’ aim is to empower children with cancer. How do we do this? By creating the gift of a very special pair of “super shoes” for a very special child. Having a child who is diagnosed with cancer is lifechanging for the whole family. It happens to nearly 11 children every day in the UK. The journey for each child is fraught with challenges, highs and lows. Supershoes works with hospitals, and children’s charities such as the charity CLIC Sargent, whose social workers refer children with a cancer diagnosis to us, and we now receive the majority of our referrals from them and work closely with them. The Converse trainers we use are bought through Office, the High Street retailer, who order and deliver our trainers for customising. From its team of nearly 350 volunteer Super Artists, Supershoes selects the best artist for each referral, and then the magic begins. A plain pair of Converse trainers is transformed into a beautiful, personal work of art, a gift of a pair of shoes, which has quite astonishing effects on the young person who receives them.

We know what receiving a pair of Supershoes can do for a child going through a horrible, tough time. It makes them smile, it’s a boost to their confidence, it reminds them who they are, above and beyond their treatment, it encourages them to get on their feet again, because who wouldn’t want to go and show off such a beautiful pair of shoes? Supershoes aims to empower children with cancer at a time when they may otherwise feel completely powerless. Supershoes is proud of its many achievements in the almost 5 years of its existence, but most of all that it is volunteer-led. This means that most of the money we raise goes directly where it’s needed most: to create Supershoes. A pair of Supershoes costs £50 to create. That’s £5 from 10 people. It’s a realistic sum of money to raise, with a measurable outcome; rather than an amount to put into a giant pot. It’s what makes Supershoes stand out as a charity. There are all kinds of ways to raise money, and our website has plenty of ideas if you’re interested to know more about what we do, and how you can help. This year, we’ve already delivered our 2000th pair of shoes, had a garden called Laced with Hope, at RHS Chelsea, and are working as hard as ever to make poorly children feel super-special. I’m really looking forward to bringing you more news via the Bletchley Buzz, and thanks to you for reading this! Check out our website’s Gallery to see more photos like this, and do get in touch via our website: www.supershoes.org.uk

With love, peace and gratitude.. Sarah xx 14

Recipe

Cook with

Chloe With Summer on our Doorsteps and lots of lovely weather, what better way to enjoy it than with a BBQ. Now, Ive only used this recipe once but it was a hit and something ill be using for my Daughters Birthday BBQ next weekend. I get lots of recipes from BBC Good Food, especially when you feel youre stuck in a rut for kids dinners, lunches, occasions etc The Key is to cook Long a slow, so it feels like not cooking at all, which is always a winner with me! Prep: 15mins Cook: 4 – 8 Hrs Serves/Makes: 12+

BBQ Pulled Pork Ingredients:

Method:

• Boneless Shoulder of Pork 2 and half KG

1. Buy a large boneless shoulder of pork (2.5kg or so). Mix together 2 tsp each smoked paprika, ground cumin, pepper, and brown sugar, plus 1 tsp salt. Rub over the pork.

• 2 Tsp Smoked Paprika • 2 Tsp Ground Cumin • 2 Tsp Pepper • 2 Tsp Brown Sugar • 1 Tsp Salt • 2 Mug fulls of Cider (Any) • 1 Mug of Smoky BBQ Sauce • Soft White Rolls to Serve • Coleslaw

2. Put the pork in a big casserole dish, skin-side up, and pour in 2 medium mugfuls of cider. Cover with a lid and cook in the oven at 150C/130C fan/gas 2 for anywhere between 4 and 8 hrs until falling apart. Check every few hours in case it gets dry – if it does, add another mugful of cider. 3. Take it out of the oven and put the meat in a big dish, leaving the liquid in the casserole. Cut the skin off, then shred the meat using two forks. Ditch any fatty bits, and skim any excess fat off the surface of the sauce. 4. Add a mugful of a good smoky BBQ sauce to the casserole, mix it in, then ladle some into a bowl for dipping. Put the pulled pork back in the casserole with the juices so it stays moist. Season to taste. Can be made one day ahead. 5. Serve in soft white rolls with some coleslaw and the bowl of juices on the side for ‘French dipping’ the sandwich while you’re eating.

Gardening

This Month – Feelingg Fruit Fruity ty Have you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry the space is too small, or it won't look pretty, or it's too difficult? What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears to plums, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even figs or nectarines? The first thing you need to know is that the sweeter the fruit is meant to be the more sun it will require. Sun boosts sugar levels. If you have a sunny wall it's an ideal place to train a sun-loving fruit tree like a peach or an apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertiliser and good quality compost. As it grows splay the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old straggly branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or 'fanning' is that as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximise your crop. It also has the benefit of being a great space saver. Choose a variety that won't grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can grow gooseberries or raspberries, or my favourite morello cherries. Most of these come in compact varieties and can also be fan-trained against a wall if space is an issue. I have a tiny orchard of minarettes - space-saving apple, pear and plum trees bought as single vertical stems which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 6 feet / 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My children love them! Simply cut back the side stems to about 10cm at this time of year and you're good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally on you for their food and water. Thick glazed / nonporous pots are best because they retain water and act as insulation in extreme cold. Use the correct compost and food for the plant but most will do well with a regular high potash liquid feed from early spring to late summer. As a gardener I was quite late to fruit-growing, but I realised quickly that it becomes an addictive hobby. And as a complete bonus I've noticed a definite increase in my bee population over the past few years. Free food, and good for the environment too. What could be better? By Rachael Leverton

7. Find a scarf (in the same colour way you’ve chosen) that can double up as wrap or pillow on the plane and can be used as a sarong on the beach.

Most of us end up taking far too much and with more and more airlines having tighter baggage restrictions and charges, you don’t want to get caught out. Or maybe you are staying in this country, in which case I think it’s harder because of the variability in weather. Of course it will depend on what type of holiday you are planning – if you are going to be relaxing by a pool or hiking up a mountain. Either way, here are some useful tips:

8. Footwear – remember wedges are much bulkier and heavier than flip flops so perhaps you are best to leave them at home and get some nice leather detailed flat sandals that you can wear in the evening. If you’re in the UK you’ll definitely need some sort of trainer/covered footwear! Put shoes in plastic bags (you don’t want to get your white top dirty!).

1. Start by making a list a few weeks before you go away – that way you avoid the last minute dash to the chemist for insect repellent etc.

9. Take a bin bag for dirty laundry and it’s also useful if you have to bring damp towels home.

2. Get everything out on the bed you want to take – then reduce it by a third. That might sound a bit drastic but be critical of what you need, everything has to be versatile – use my ‘magic 3’s’ and ask yourself: - will it go with 3 different things? - can I wear it on 3 different occasions? If the answer is no and you decide to take it, I bet it will come back unworn! 3. Think about colour – again, use the rule of 3 – base your clothes around 2 neutrals like navy, white, cream, beige, grey and add a pop of your favourite colour. That way you’ll take fewer garments but have more co-ordinated options. 4. If you are travelling as a family, split some clothes between suitcases, just in case one goes missing and I always pack my bikini/costume, contact lenses and toothbrush in my hand luggage (or whatever is important to you). That way if your bag gets lost or delayed you can still have a dip in the pool when you arrived! 5. Use up all your space – put small items like knickers, socks and swimwear inside your shoes. 6. Roll clothes instead of folding, they crease less and take up less space.

10. Don’t forget you can only take up to 100ml of liquid in hand luggage so use small bottles to decant if necessary. I would suggest your hand luggage bag is your beach bag. If you need more help, then don’t hesitate to get in touch. I have been known to go to America for 5 days with only hand luggage. I managed to take my trainers and walking coat as well as a change of boots, some nice outfits for going out in the evening and 8 presents!!
