Ashborne Day Nursery Ashbourne Day Nurseries was founded by parents for parents. We focus on investing in our babies and children and their future wellbeing. Ashbourne Day Nurseries acquired our setting Chantry House, Fenny Stratford in May 2017. Since we opened we have extensively refurbished the nursery and we are now focusing on getting our new garden area complete in time for the warm weather. Our Nursery is managed by Jordan. She has over nine years of childcare experience, seven of these have been as a Nursery Manager. Jordan has the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for the Children and Young People's Workforce- Early Years and she is now working towards her Foundation Degree in Early Years Practice. She leads a strong team of practitioners who are extremely passionate about working with children. Each of them thrive in providing a warm home from home environment for every child that attends our setting.

Each of our rooms within the nursery are age related starting from our baby room which we like to call 'Ladybirds' , to our toddler 'Caterpillar' room, to then onto our preschool 'Butteries' room. Once you register your child with us we will work with you to have as many settling in sessions as you need, so your child and you feel happy and comfortable. We would be delighted to show you around our nursery so you can see for yourself what we can provide for your child. To arrange a visit please call 01908 277356.

Our practitioners appreciate and understand the worry that every parent has when they return to work, so we take great pride in building strong relationships with our parents. We send regular observations to you through our online learning journal. This enables you to see images, short video's or observations of what your child has been up to at nursery. During your child's time with us we encourage regular interaction sessions from our parents, this includes: Parent Evenings right through to Mother's Day Tea and Father's Day Breakfasts.

Cats Protection Milton Keynes and District Branch to open new charity shop at Newton Leys next month. Cats Protection’s Milton Keynes and District Branch are excited to announce the opening of the new charity shop on the Newton Leys development as *Friday 4th May 2018*. The branch will reside in the final commercial unit, joining Asda, Costa Coffee, Moore’s Fish & Chips, ZigZag hairdressers which have already opened. Situated in Newton Leys, Bletchley, the shop will sell a variety of second-hand clothes and household goods as well as bric-a-brac, children’s toys and books. There will also be a collection point for donated cat food, and the opportunity to enter the weekly Cat Lottery too. “The branch would very much appreciate donations and clean second-hand goods including clothes, books, DVDs, children’s toys and household goods,” said Aimee Purnell Willet, Branch Co-ordinator. “In addition, we would love to hear from anyone willing to volunteer their time to help run the shop and raise much needed funds for the cats and kittens in our care. “Funds raised by the shop will help to pay for looking after unwanted cats in the branch’s care including food and vets bills, so we hope the local community see us as a cause worth supporting in the local area.” Please contact us on info@mkcats.org.uk or 01908 984799 to arrange collection of donations. Car parking at intu Milton Keynes just got easier with the launch of its new Tap & Go service. From yesterday (4/4), customers parking in the multistorey car park can simply present their contactless bank or credit card to the sensor pad, park up, enjoy a rush-free shop and simply tap their card again on the exit pad. The new Tap & Go service will remove the need for queuing at the pay machines or the need to carry spare change. Traditional means of payment will continue to be available for customers not wanting to use the service or for those that don’t have a contactless card. General Manager Shelley Peppard says, “Many of us are now used to paying for our shopping, meals or tickets by presenting our contactless card at the checkout, making payment easier and faster. Now this experience can be enjoyed when parking at intu Milton Keynes.” Shelley adds, “We are currently investing in our car park by completely refurbishing both floors, entrance and exit, making the start and finish of a visit to intu Milton Keynes even more enjoyable. Tap & Go will form part of this overall experience, giving shoppers a simple and handy way to pay for parking.” The intu Milton Keynes car park is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment works, which are being carried out over phases to reduce disruption and ensure people can still use the car park.

LOCAL NEWS Bruckner and bubbly with the Danesborough Chorus

New look Bletchley library reopens Thursday 15 March 2018 Popular Bletchley Library this week (12 March) re-opened its doors customers following an extensive refurbishment. The new library had been closed for eight months but has reopened with the following facilities: • Adult, teenage and children’s book collections • Computers, printing and IT services including free Wi-Fi and access to online eLibrary services • Room hire • Home Library Service • Storytimes and Children’s hours • Knit and Natter group

Save the date and pack a picnic for an evening of music and feasting with the Danesborough Chorus, in the atmospheric setting of Woburn Church, on Saturday 23rd June at 7.30 pm. The choir is performing Bruckner's Mass in F Minor, 'thundering, heavenly and sublime', inspired by the classical forms of Haydn and Mozart, yet with a bold, new vitality, which irritated conservative church circles in the early days. Bruckner composed his Mass in 1868, then 'fine-tuned' it up to 1893, striving for musical perfection to express his devout religious faith. It is generally recognised as one of the finest settings ever of sacred texts (even arch-rival Brahms confessed to being deeply moved when he attended a performance). A quartet of outstanding professional soloists and the Milton Keynes City Orchestra join the choir for a programme which also includes Mendelssohn's melodic Italian Symphony. Thrill at Bruckner's long, unfolding melodies and opulent harmonies in the favourable acoustic of Woburn Church ¬ and bring strawberries and bubbly to enjoy during our traditional extended interval on the lawns. Tickets: £22 and £17 (reserved, central nave), £10 (unreserved, side aisles), under 18s £5. Available by post from Danesborough Tickets, 58 Church Road, Aspley Heath, Woburn Sands, MK17 8TA (send SAE and cheque payable to ‘Danesborough Chorus’) or phone 01908 583460. Visit www.danesborough.org.uk for further information. 8

The £700k modernisation project has been funded by Section 106 Grant Funding and West Bletchley Town Council. Bletchley Library is the second busiest library in MK borough and issues around 90,000 books a year and has around 81,000 visits a year. More than 4,000 residents in Bletchley are members of the library. Milton Keynes Mayor, Councillor David Hopkins, performed the official ribbon cutting ceremony. Councillor Liz Gifford, the Cabinet member responsible for libraries, said, “We are investing in our libraries in Milton Keynes and we are really excited to be re-opening the newly refurbished Bletchley Library. “The new library will provide a fun and vibrant space for the customers to use. We have worked closely with the local Town Councils to provide a state of the art library including a new rentable community meeting room. Look out for the massive jungle themed mural in the Children’s Library. It’s brilliant!” Everyone is welcome to the opening and light refreshments will be available. Come along and have a look at the bright new library in Bletchley and new members are always welcome.

Bletchley Rotary Club Bletchley and the Bletchley Rotary Club. By Derek G Mynard, 5th April 2018, I disclose to you a long-kept secret.

School Hall, with tickets at ten bob a head! Entertainment? The wonderful Welwyn Garden City Male Voice Choir.

WE are the only Rotary Club in town! Do commit this fact to memory. I know there are other Rotary clubs nearby, but they cannot compare to Bletchley. Why? Simply because our club started as long ago as 1957, in the days before Queensway became Queensway and when Milton Keynes’ roundabouts were but coffee-mug stains on a sketch, in a Westminster office.

Many of our Rotary club members these days, although sufferers of creaky joints and much groaning, are hard-working and instrumental, after sixty years, in continuing to help and support the less fortunate. If you go along to Dobbies Garden Centre during the last Bank Holiday in May, our team will be there, ready for a chat about the weather and fritillaria meleagris, all while you pop a penny or two into our collection bucket. Should you then be inclined to know more about us, and I assure you there is no bar to visiting us any Monday lunchtime to enjoy a buffet lunch and likely an entertaining speaker, all in the company of a lively group of people. Should you want more information please contact us through the offices of Bletchley Buzz.

I hear you say, what on earth is this fellow talking about? Well, dear readers, I am talking about Bletchley Rotary Club’s year-on-year success in improving the lives of the disadvantaged, the under privileged and needy people, in giving physical and financial help via local charities; also upon occasion, applying pressure in places where it matters. One of our long-departed members used such influence to enable a swimming pool to be built in Bletchley. Now, because of this man’s foresight, you have a gleaming first-class facility. Before then, we swam at the so-called ‘Sandy Beach’ and ‘Stony Island’– can’t do that now, because they built a coffee-mug stained roundabout on it called Denbigh, next to IKEA! I can also disclose the remarkable achievement of two other club members, one still amongst us; while his colleage-in-arms peers down from upon high. Between them these two gentlemen founded Willen Hospice, that peaceful, community resting place for those readying for that magic flight into wonderland!

In closing this short piece about Rollicking Rotary, we wish Bletchley Buzz owner, the charming Kelly, all success in her new-found venture. Her magazine is extremely readable, exciting, and up-to-date: it deserves lots of local support. Le gros fromage, Derek Mynard.

I am aware that the next situation I bring to your attention might have passed you by. Have you noticed that Milton Keynes’ Hospital’s Outpatients department’s facade is adorned with the name LUING COWLEY? This mountain of a man, Mayor, Alderman, Bletchley businessman, founder member of our club and Milton Keynes itself, and chairman of MK District Health Authority, and in being so, helped plan the development of a leading, major, medical facility: the Milton Keynes Hospital! Luing departed our company recently, aged 95, his legacy is unsurpassed, having served his family, his town and his country — Spitfire pilot in WW2, Cairo, South Africa and he fought in the battle of Al Alamein. Our Rotary club led the way in the 1950/60s, in giving transport assistance for hospital patients; cooperating and building a physiotherapy workshop; staging film shows at the Winslow Hospital and working with newly formed Bletchley Council Social Service. One highlight in 1963 was a concert organised to raise funds for the Bletchley Freedom From Hunger Campaign. Held at the Grammar

Recipe

Cook with

Chloe If like my family, bananas are a staple part of the kid’s diet, then you will often have left overs. It has become second nature to grab some bananas while shopping as they always come in handy for breakfast/lunch/snack /car journeys, but once they start to look a little over-ripe I make Banana Bread.

Banana Bread With Chocolate Chips

The great news is the riper your bananas are the better the bread will be and with my 3 monsters about it never lasts long. It is perfect for lunch boxes or after school snacks.

• 110g/4oz Unsalted Butter

18

Method:

• 285g/10oz Plain Flour

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.

• 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda

You can also try it with blueberries, raisins, nuts, peanut butter or experiment with other fruit. If using heavy fruit, I would put half in the mixture and then sprinkle the rest on top before popping in the oven, otherwise they all sink to the bottom. Enjoy :)

Ingredients:

• 225g/8oz Caster Sugar • 2 Free-range Eggs

2. Grease a 20cm x 12.5cm/8in x 5in loaf tin. 3. Sift Flour, Bicarb Soda and Salt into a large mixing bowl.

• 3/4 Ripe Banana’s mashed

4. In a separate bowl, cream the butter then add sugar and mix untill light and fluffy.

• 85ml 3fl oz Buttermilk (or Normal Milk mixed with 1 1/2 tsp Lemon Juice or Vinegar)

5. Add the eggs, Mashed banana’s, buttermilk and Vanilla Extract to the Butter sugar mix. Mix well, then fold in flour mixture.

• 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract

6. Add the chocolate chips and another quick mix.

• 200g Chocolate Chips

7. Pour cake mix into prepared tin. 8. Transfer to the oven and bake for about an hour, or untill well risen and golden brown. 9. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin for a few minutes, then turn onto a wire rack and cool completely.

Gardening

your garden in may We have to hope that May will see the start of some better weather after such a horrendously wet and cold Spring. Somehow our plants are surviving and colour is coming back into the garden, if a little late.

Jobs for the garden : Regularly hoe off weeds, they have loved the wet weather so get rid of them as soon as possible. Mulch around newly planted trees and shrubs to reduce weeds and retain moisture : Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs, cut back Aubretia when it has finished flowering. : Start planting up hanging baskets and containers but bring back inside if frost is likely; : Plant out summer bedding at the end of the month (unless it is still very cold) : Stake border perennial varieties now that are tall growing and that tend to flop over : Prune early flowering shrubs back so that they have time to make new growth and flower buds for next year : Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days : Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still remaining : Begin to cut the grass regularly and fill in any bare spots by slightly loosening the surface of the soil and sow a good quality lawn seed over the area evenly : Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle grubs

Topical Tips – The Chelsea Chop So called because it is usually carried out at the end of May, coinciding with the Chelsea Flower Show, the Chelsea Chop is a method for controlling the size, shape and flowering time of certain summerflowering plants. Plants will not be so tall and leggy, will need less staking and the flowers may be smaller but more numerous. Clumps of perennials can be chopped back by one third to a half using shears or secateurs. If you have several clumps of one plant, try cutting back a few, but leaving others. Cuttings can sometimes be used to propagate more plants. Anthemis tinctoria, Echinacea purpurea, Helenium, Phlox paniculata, Sedum (upright forms such as 'Herbstfreude') and Solidago all respond well to the Chelsea Chop. LOCAL NEWS It could be the issue which decides next month's local elections - potholes. Labour and the Conservatives both claim they will fix them, but who should we believe? Labour has today announced 'Operation 20,000' as they claim they will fill in 20,000 of them over the next 12 months, whilst local Conservatives claim the plan is simply 'a gimmick' which 'underlines the need for change'. 'Operation 20,000' has been revealed today by the Labourled Milton Keynes Council and is set for its official launch on April 16th. Labour officials claim the plan will see 20,000 potholes filled in over the next 12 months. They say this is made possible thanks to a new ‘Jetpatcher’ machine which will allow rapid progress to be made to tackle the pothole problem. Cllr Martin Gowans, Cabinet Member for Highways said: "Getting to grips with the pothole problem across Milton Keynes has been difficult. We are now overcoming the lack of funding and some poor inherited practices to launch our ‘Operation Target 20,000 potholes’ on April 16."

approach. There has been a lot of misinformation about the pothole problem locally. I believe our new approach will start to address the pothole problem caused by years of under investment as a result of Government funding cuts." But the plans are being criticised by local Milton Keynes Conservative Leader Cllr Alex Walker who are says it "demonstrates their lack of leadership and underlines the need for change in Milton Keynes". He added: "They have had 4 years to take action on potholes and they have failed. They have failed to spend £450k of ring-fenced Government funding just for potholes and voted to scrap the 28 day limit on repairs leaving more potholes on our roads for longer. That's their record. A gimmick four weeks before an election won't fool anyone." Meanwhile, a local source has told MKFM that they understand the Council has allocated £450,000 to fill in 20,000 potholes, which would put the cost of repair at around £20 per pothole. The source added: "If I knew it was that cheap, I would have gone to B&Q or Wickes and had several done myself."

"We will be able to achieve 20,000 potholes in the next 12 months thanks to the new equipment and change in

Potholes are a hot topic with the local public, as an MKFM Facebook post about the topic recently demonstrated the level of anger amongst residents at the current situation.

The Milton Keynes Conservatives have said that rough sleeping will be 'eradicated in Milton Keynes' within 24 months, if the party is elected at next month's local Council elections.

million into support for homelessness, support stakeholders such as the YMCA and the Winter Night Shelter offering a real partnership with the Council and work with the Government’s new Rough Sleeping Team to attain targeted funding and specialist advice."

The local party say that since 2014 the number of people sleeping rough in Milton Keynes has rapidly increased and that the Council estimate that at any one time up to 100 people could be sleeping rough on the streets.

Leader of the Milton Keynes Conservative Group Cllr Alex Walker said: “We must not shy away from what is the biggest challenge we face as a city. It is nothing short of a scandal in one of the fastest growing places in the UK."

Labour Council Leader Cllr Peter Marland has already pledged a bed for every rough sleeper.

“It has happened under Labour’s watch and we need to call them out for what is their biggest failing while they have been running Milton Keynes."

In a statement to MKFM, the leader of the council Peter Marland said ''The budget already contains over £2m for homelessness, including £500k for helping rough sleepers. We are now offering a bed to any homeless person on the street who wants it and putting other support services in place. This is ongoing funding despite ongoing cuts of over £144m to MK Council." "The real level of reserves if you discount money put aside for infrastructure projects, money we hold for schools and ringfenced housing money is around £17m, and dropping below that would put us at risk of becoming like Tory-run Northamptonshire." A local Conservative official said: "The Conservative opposition has been a strong critic of the Labour-led Council who have withdrawn funding to organisations working on the front-line, voted against a £2million plan for more support and destroyed the relationship with private sector landlords during their four years running Milton Keynes." "The Conservatives have pledged to eradicate rough sleeping by 2020 with a plan to invest an additional £2

26

“It is something we need to deal with, with real urgency. We have an ambitious plan to eradicate rough sleeping within 24 months and I am confident we can achieve that.” The Conservative Deputy Leader and Spokesperson for Housing and Homelessness Cllr Catriona Morris added: "This is an issue Labour should have seen coming. They have reduced funding to organisations working on the front-line, failed to properly engage with Government and created a rough sleeping strategy four years too late." "This Labour Council, propped up by the Lib Dems, have stashed more than £50 million into savings and yet at the same time have sat by while people are sleeping rough. They have their priorities all wrong and it really is time for change." "We will invest in real solutions, we will work with local partners and with Government, and together we will eradicate rough sleeping in Milton Keynes." The announcement came as the Conservatives published their ‘Plan for Milton Keynes’ named ‘Time for Change.’
