9:00p.m. Somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean -- Today has been one of those weird days. I left New York City and its 81 degree weather earlier this afternoon to come to Cambridge, Massachusetts to study for my semester final that is happening in 72 hours. After a two-hour flight delay and a 20 degree climate decrease, I now only have two hours to study with the two classmates that are far more prepared for the Constitution and the Media than I am. Yes, a lot of “2”s, miles, and wasted time. I keep telling myself, “In the long run, it’s all worth it.”

So you ask what does that have to do with Issue 36 of BLEU Magazine? The answer is simple-- EVERYTHING. Who we are, what we do, and how we do it relates to EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING counts. Nothing is by chance. Had my flight not been delayed, I would not have ended up on this later flight completely bored and restless, thus finding the time to type this letter in real time. We were on deadline and I was the hold up. BLEU met our cover star, Sebatian Mikael, a little over a year ago at the Akoo Showroom in NYC. He was new on the scene and warming up the charts with last year’s hit “Last Night,” featuring Wale. A year later, he’s embarking on a tour with other European cross-over sensation, Niko & Vinc. As he prepares for the first show in Boston this late spring, he took time between studio sessions to shoot our cover. This by far is our best issue yet. Not because the previous were bad, we are simply getting better. Visually awesome, the content is concise and the team behind the brand is enthusiastic. It could be the Belvedere in this cup, but I’m definitely intoxicated with excitement for you to read the next 90 pages. The team has killed it! New logo. New artistic direction. And no one more important than you, the reader, for the feedback on social media.

s the weather heats up, it’s ok to breakout of the monotonous gym routine and make the neighborhood surroundings your personal fitness center. Don’t panic, there’s nothing wrong with switching it up a bit; change is good. According to our fitness expert Joe Morris of Rebellion Fitness, outdoor workouts are the perfect activity to stimulate your spring and summer workout regimen, as they will push you further along and contain the added benefit of keeping the body fit while providing you with the enjoyment of exercising outdoors. Here are a few basic outdoor workouts Morris encourages you to use in almost any warm-weather setting.

Dips

(target muscles: triceps and pectorals)

How to do it: Sit on a bench and place your hands at your sides, palms facing down on the bench. After lifting your hips off the bench with your arms, bend at elbows and lower your buttocks towards the ground and raise yourself back up.

What to avoid: Keep your elbows in and focus on maintaining a range of motion where the elbows flex straight backwards. You want to keep your buttocks close to the bench.

How many reps: 3-4 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Personal Tips: For more difficulty, plant one leg on the surface while elevating the other. For beginners, plant both feet on a surface with legs closer to the body, knees bent.

How to do it: Face a bench or sturdy elevated platform. Place hands on edge of the bench or platform, slightly wider than shoulder width. Position forefeet out, away from the bench or platform no more than shoulder width apart. Your arms and body are straight, as the weight of your body is primarily supported by the arms. Arms should be perpendicular to body. Keeping the body straight, lower the chest to edge of the platform by bending the arms. Push the body back up until the arms are extended. Repeat.

How many reps: 3-4 sets of 10 to 15 push-ups. Personal Tips: Keep the low back neutral with entire body.

Walking Lunges (targeted muscle: quadriceps)

How to do it: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and your hands on your hips. Step forward with one leg, flexing the knees to drop your hips. Descend until your rear knee nearly touches the ground. Your posture should remain upright, and your front knee should stay above the front foot. Driving through the heel of your lead foot, extend both knees to raise yourself back up. Step forward with your rear foot, repeating the lunge on the opposite leg.

How many reps: 40 yards down and back. 3-4 sets. Personal Tips: Chest up. Chin up. Shoulders back. Knee behind the toe.

Decline Push - ups (targeted muscle: pectorals)

How to do it: Get into push-up position facing away from the bench or elevated platform with your hands on the ground and your feet position on the elevated surface. Keeping body straight, lower the chest towards the ground by bending the arms. Push the body back up until the arms are fully extended. Repeat.

How many reps: 3-4 sets of 10 to 15 push-ups. Personal Tips: Perform exercise with a neutral lower back. Control breathing by breathing in as you go down into the push-up (the eccentric motion), and by breathing out as you come back up to the starting position (the concentric motion).

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Heat a 12-inch oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat. Add in the oil. Sprinkle both sides of the chicken with salt, pepper, the brown sugar, paprika and cayenne. Sear both sides of the chicken until golden, about 4 minutes. Add in the hot sauce to the skillet. Bring to a simmer and then place in the oven to finish off. The chicken should register 160 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer.

Directions

Let the chicken cool, and then pull the meat with your hands. Adjust the seasoning if necessary, and then place back into the oven at broil until crusty and caramelized on top, about 4 minutes. Arrange the pepper halves cut side up in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish and fill each pepper half with the meat mixture. Pour the tomatoes over the peppers and sprinkle with the feta cheese. Lenses are scattered about while fresh flowers rest in an awkwardly broken red wine bottle that sits in the window. Striking remnants of sage cut the air while lingering around the room. The studio is stained with marine blue paint. Shades of red, yellow, and green find a way to pop out into existence while entering a visionary trance deeper into the writings on the wall. This privileged space portrays the role of a grand visionary board. As the artist sits and stares at his muse, it becomes evident that these colorful animated walls reflect the ideas and experiences he has acquired from his enriched life-long journey. Despite the angle, particular pairs of eyes from images meet your eyes, while sharp features from African and Indian masks beam a royal pride. It’s as if you can absorb the spirits’ warm and calming energy. Black and brown subjects, ripped out magazine pages, incense trinkets and splattered art pieces display a fair truth about photographer and visual artist, Kwesi Abbensetts. Illuminating as one of the first Black New York photographers to open a door to shoot young people, Kwesi Abbensetts, endures an organic aesthetic in celebration of the black and brown culture. Originating from South America, Kwesi blossomed as a child throughout the Caribbean, as reflected in the vibrational concepts of nature and outstanding beauty easily detected in his works. “Nature is the root of everything. It’s how I grew up. Living in the city makes you look for nature.” While thumbing through Abbensetts’ photography timeline, one can attach a dignified strength to the subtle graciousness lying within his subjects. Crooked noses and distorted hair look infamously regal in reality, but endearingly accentual in a Kwesi Abbensetts photo. Capturing both an essence of raw emotion and grains of stubble that dwell in the human spirit, portrays the true beauty that the artist not only tags to his work as “transformative and transcendence,” but penetrates an artistic cadence that leads to legendary markings. Abbensetts’ works gleam an aura of specks of green, blue, and a reddish yellow hue–green like a tree in nature; blue like calming waters; a crimson-influenced yellow with warm, inviting energy meeting a strong presence.

Hues of greys color the New York City skyline as if they were a part of a painted masterpiece. Lights from skyscrapers and theatre marquees peak through the clouds glaring atop street puddles of previous rain showers. The water ripples with every stomp as a heard of people intensely rush to an important somewhere. Horns blow in a sense of urgency from gridlock street traffic contributing to the clamor that travels up to the window of Sebastian Mikael’s photoshoot. Who’s Sebastian Mikael? He’s the guitar rifting, piano playing, lyric writing musical phenom that has his listeners hooked on what many would consider “the good stuff”-- good artistry, that is. All the way from Sweden, the 24-year-old was born and raised by his Swedish father and Ethiopian mother. Both parents created a warm environment enriched in music, hence his ability to create addictive tunes labeling him the industry’s “artistic pusher man.”

That’s why I simply want to focus on my music. It made me realize how much it can throw you off track and I never want that to happen again.”

With his past in the rear view mirror and a new album on the horizon, the Sweden stud shares the contrast of his devastating lows that fueled thoughts of professionally giving up, to his current body of work that reflects his lofty artistic vision that once upon a time seemed almost unreachable. “During my first deal with Epic, I felt like they had me working with every producer on the planet. It was sort of confusing because we would be working for like two days and not get anything finished. I didn’t have the chance to bond or gel with anyone, so it took the fun out it. After I left that label, I signed a new deal. I didn’t initially have an album, but just a song that I had written years before in my college dorm room called ‘Speechless’ that people seemed to love.” The outcome of his diligence and damn good talent brought about an amazing response to the single, and an entire project transpired as a result. “This time I worked with two producers I grew up with in Sweden and two producers from Miami named Big D & Lamb who did “Last Night” and “Forever.” “Growing up I listened to a lot of Sade and Marvin Gaye because my parents were big fans of them. So when I started making music, those influences sort of naturally came out. Also, of course, I loved Lenny Kravitz, Kanye, Pharrell, and N.E.R.D. I was a huge N.E.R.D. fan,” he declares. Although, he was fortunate enough to be exposed to great music while growing up in his household, Sweden didn’t showcase too much R&B or Hip-Hop. “It’s really known for Rock and House music. This time you can kind of hear the influences from my childhood.”

What’s next? “Next for me is a collection of new visuals and songs that will be a part of my new EP. Also, simply going back on tour and seeing the feedback of the fans.” As he confesses that there were times he felt like packing up and going back to Sweden, it’s almost certain that this is no longer the case. Officially out of the studio from cooking up hits, fans everywhere can get excited as the singer sets out for a summer of 2015 release.

Destined for Greatness words DOMINIQUE CARSON

At the age of 19, Shameik Moore introduced his gifts and talents to the world as a dancer, singer and model. Moore made his debut in entertainment when he starred in the comedy series Incredible Crew on the Cartoon Network. He also made guest appearances in Tyler Perry’s House of Pain, Reed Between the Lines, and The Watsons Go to Birmingham. Now he has a lead role in the film Dope with A$AP Rocky and Zoe Kravitz, premiering in June 2015. Bleu Magazine was able to converse with Moore about Dope and his collaboration with Pharrell on the film’s soundtrack in an exclusive interview.

Tell us about the movie Dope and about your character Malcolm. The movie Dope is a new classic, especially for young adults. It’s a “coming of age” film. The movie comes out in June and is directed by Rick Famuyiwa. It will leave everyone with a new perspective on life and growing up in the hood. Malcolm and his two best friends live in Inglewood (CA) as geeks trying to survive in a ‘bad’ neighborhood. Basically, they learn how to overcome every situation that comes their way. I don’t want to tell you the entire movie but the message behind the film is that it’s up to you to persevere in life; a person can seek another way out and not be limited to the environment.

What was it like working with Forest Whitaker and Zoe Kravitz? Forest Whitaker is a great actor; if you counted on your hand the A-list actors, Forest Whitaker is one of them. It was great working with him; he has inspired me so much. Forest has this positive vibe about him and I’ve received so much knowledge about acting from him--it’s a blessing. Zoe has a beautiful spirit; she makes you feel comfortable and at ease. I mean she was just herself--cool and calm and she wasn’t standoffish. When I introduced myself to her on the set, she was really down to earth. Zoe is so pretty [laughs]. I am just thankful that I worked with Forest, Zoe, A$AP Rocky and everyone else on this film because they are all extremely talented.

How does it feel to have a lead role in the film? You worked with Queen Latifah, Keke Palmer, and Dolly Parton in Joyful Noise but this time you are the main star in the film. Is it exciting? Do you feel pressured to exceed in the role? I don’t feel pressured at all because I can only do my very best. I try not to think about it too much because these are the opportunities that I’ve been praying for and now that they are here, I have to do what I have to do. I have to do what’s expected of me and make it happen. Every opportunity that has come my way has been a blessing and an amazing experience. Which one do you love more: music, dancing or acting— and why? I can’t really answer that question because I can’t separate the talents that God has blessed with me. Each gift, whether it’s music, dancing, or acting, allows me to express myself freely. I can watch television shows and find inspiration behind them because I can picture [things] in my head. It’s hard to say, but I truly support and embrace all three. I get to present each one of them at different times and stages in my career. 64

How did you get an opportunity to work with Grammy Awardwinning producer Pharrell for the movie soundtrack? What was it like working with him in the studio? Aww that was a special time for me because when I was making music with him in the studio, I just saw him be creative. Pharrell is a creative being and I was grateful that I was able to be in the same room with him. I mean, you don’t usually run into Pharrell or work with him, so this was a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for me. I mean, he’s Pharrell-one of the hottest producers in the game. But, in the studio, we did four songs together in two days and I watched how he pulls everything together musically. He has inspired me to be a better musician and I just see him as my Alpha in music. He gave me great advice and posted a picture of us on Instagram. I am sure that he is proud of the work that we did together. Pharrell is truly an artist I want to learn from because he knows his craft and, plus, you just want to be around positive people. Working with him was like a prayer that came true. Are you returning to television because you appeared on BET’s Reed Between the Lines and Tyler Perry’s House of Pain? Of course I would love to return to television, but for right now I am focused on cinematic roles. I would like to have epic roles on television as well. When are you planning to release your debut album? What was the creative process for the album? I am working on my debut album but I am finishing up an EP called 33058. It’s coming out on May 4th and I named it after my Atlanta zip code. This EP is the soundtrack to my life and I am embracing my Atlanta roots. I must represent ATL because it’s a part of me, and you will hear that Atlanta bounce on the EP. My family is from Jamaica so you will hear a little bit of reggae as well. But it’s a mixture of R&B and Hip-Hop with a positive vibe. I’m just throwing it out there and making great music. Get ready world! It’s a “get ready” project. Who would you like to work with in the future? I would love to work with Big Sean or A$AP Rocky-that’s big bro right there. There are a lot of people [I’d like to work] with because many are artists in their own right. They believe in themselves and their skills are known all over the world. How do you plan to increase your fan base as an entertainer? I plan to increase my fan base by working really hard and by keeping going. I have to keep moving forward, to continue to perform, to take care of myself and to stay humble. I am humble but you have to be aware. I pray constantly. I am in the gym, eating right, and striving to stay positive. I just really want to give back and change the world. I would like to have a positive effect on history and stay true to myself. I don’t try to talk or act a certain way so I can fit in with the crowd; that’s not my style. People gravitate to you even more when you’re honest, so why change who I am as a person if I have been blessed with so many opportunities. I believe after the movie Dope comes out, more opportunities will come, so for me, it’s about being real. What piece of advice can you tell someone who wants to work in the entertainment industry? First and foremost, you have to believe in yourself, otherwise no one else will believe in you. It’s the truth because you have to be your number one supporter. You have to make others believe in you. Once you believe in yourself, put in the work. If you want to be an actor or singer, study it. Take some classes and show some effort. You have to work hard for what you want; everything will not be given to you. You have to work in order for everyone to see the best you. You can paint your future by motivating yourself and by giving back, as I mentioned before. Remain positive and watch everything change in your life.

Lavar Jacobs What do you do? I’m the founder of a non-profit organization that is devoted to breast cancer awareness based in Akron, Ohio. I also have a clothing line, NJO, which also promotes awareness. What makes your work worth it? At every event I have, I speak on the importance of knowing the signs [of breast cancer] and getting tested. Having the ability to influence someone to do something positive for themselves and possibly saving someone’s life, makes it more than worth it. Tell us about your roots. I grew up in Akron, Ohio. I had a modest upbringing. Coming from a very small city, not too many people in Akron follow their dreams; that added fuel to my fire. My roots-where I come from--have showed me that no matter the situation, you can do anything you set your mind to. What was the last thing that you did that scared the hell out of you? Right now, I’m still at the point where all of my funding is coming from my own bank account or from my family. I recently had an event and the expenses came up to $1500. I really didn’t know how many people were actually going to come nor if I would be able to cover all the expenses. But through the promotion of the event, and by the grace of God, the event made enough money to cover everything. That was just another sign that showed me I am doing something good. 5 years ago, did you think you would be where you are now? So, my mother passed away from breast cancer in 2009 and I was 23-years-old at the time. After that happened I always had the thought of starting [my non-profit] but I never went through with it. It took me getting my life stable to actually move forward with it. But I know everything happens in perfect timing. And now was the time for me to kick this thing up another level and do something great in honor of my mother and the millions of people who are effected by breast cancer. If you had a superpower what would it be? The ability to teleport--I would be able to travel the world and be any place at any given time. That would be dope! And while I’m traveling to all those places, I would definitely spread the Not Just October initiative. Exciting things happening in 2015 for your organization. I have so many events I’m preparing for outside of Ohio and I think that’s kinda cool. My first year is wrapping up and so I’m looking forward to hosting my second annual round of events. I just want to continue to do everything I can to make sure that one day Akron, Ohio is known as the breast cancer awareness capital of the world! Hana Mayeda What do you do? I am a full-time model. I also teach yoga and volunteer for an organization in Haiti called English in Mind. What makes being a model worth it? I get to work with creative, inspiring people doing things that I love. Though sometimes the travel is crazy or the days are long, it often doesn’t seem like work. Modeling also gives me the flexibility to teach yoga and travel to Haiti which are both [endeavors] that are beyond fulfilling. Tell us about your roots. My father was Japanese and my mother is English, Irish, German and Scottish.

What was the last thing that scared the hell out of you? While on one of my first trips to Haiti, I got on the back of a motorcycle at dusk. There were no traffic or street lights. So between the road and the dark horizon, a cloud of dust kicked up from the road; I felt like I was on Mars. Our driver zipped gracefully through the chaos. It was both exhilarating and absolutely terrifying. I’ve been back so many times I swear I could probably paint my nails on the back of a moto now! If you had a super power, what would it be? If I had a super power, I would want to be able to heal people.

What designer would you choose to style you for the rest of your life? Yves Saint Laurent. If you were to get your Ph.D, in what field would it be? I would love to get a Ph.D in human behavior. What are you most looking forward to in 2015? I’m most looking forward to accomplishing goals that not too long ago were only dreams. The first would be building a school in Haiti, which will completely transform the lives of so many incredible people in Port-Au-Prince. I’m also excited to continue to share my love for yoga both through modeling and my new partnership with S10 Training.

Tim Wicked What do you do? I am a musician. What makes it worth it? It is what I love to do and being a musician is an opportunity to change the world. Tell us about your roots. I dropped out of college. I became a singer for my first band, The Arcade Stars. We played in almost every venue in NYC. I also worked simultaneously with an autistic child until I started touring. I then went on the road briefly as the keyboardist for Hip-Hop duo Kidz in the Hall. Then I toured as a keyboardist and background vocalist for the band Gym Class Heroes. I worked personally with Travie McCoy for many years as a DJ/ background singer/producer/songwriter/tour support, you name it... I was featured on his first solo record Lazarus as Tim William on the track “Critical,” which I also cowrote. I just released my first single “Understand,” as Tim Wicked which is currently active on pop radio. It’s also available on iTunes & Spotify. Download the Dash Radio App as well. What was the last thing that scared the hell out of you? Going to Hell. If you had a super power, what would it be? I have a superpower…I’m not telling. On a world tour, what country would you be excited to hit up first? I’m excited to go back to Japan. If you had to dye your hair one color of the rainbow, which would it be? I’m probably going to keep my hair black. I dyed it bleach blonde once. Name three of your creative icons. One, we love sneakers and two, we want to deliver a product to the consumer at a better price than they’re getting now.” Jon Buscemi Co-Founder “Greats is like a cross section of Heritage Sports--style and being of a classic nature. The person that would wear Greats is the person that would gravitate towards a company that is doing something a little different.” Priding themselves on being mainly an e-commerce-based store, Greats’ uniquely designed website takes its shoppers through a journey of each individual shoe, step-by-step. Broken down are explanations of shoe compilation, detailed product sourcing and inspired outfit looks for each shoe. I think the biggest motivation was the ability to disrupt an entire industry. You look at the majority of footwear companies out there, they’re working on 18to 24-month development and production lead times. We’re able to work on product, concept, design, R&D (research and development) and production in under four months. Since its start in 2012, the successful combination of appropriately pricing well-made shoes and maintaining the integrity of vertical integration has attracted big investors, venture capitalists and some of the most elite names in fashion. Through Series A funding, the Greats was able to raise $4 million this year in order to expand. It was clear that people buy lots of shoes online but nobody was building a brand for men. This [company] will ultimately become a global brand just like any other footwear brand, or any other brand that we’ve been involved with in our careers…We’re just going to build it from ground zero. With finances falling in line, Greats can now focus on the fashion aspect of their rapid growing business which might include brand associated apparel for the “great lifestyle.”

T

he state of Louisiana is known for its delightful Cajun cuisine and will soon be known for a new delight this spring—La’el Collins. This mammoth 305 pound man--with the drive of a V12 engine-will be making his way out of the bayou and into the NFL in 2015. Collins played for the Louisiana State University Tigers and was a beast at protecting his quarterback and running backs on the offensive line. He recorded 222.5 knock down blocks in his career at LSU. As a senior in 2014, he won the Jacobs’ Blocking Trophy, which is given to the best offensive lineman in the SEC. Even though his skills are impressive, what makes him stand out is his commitment to excellence. Collins was a highly touted player his junior year at LSU and experts thought he was ready to enter the draft. However, he made the decision to stay in school because, “I only get one more year of this, so why not go ahead and finish this out; it’s part of my life that I won’t get back,” said Collins. The thought of leaving school early is a burden that many young athletes face annually in American sports. The decision becomes harder when you are raised in a single parent household like La’el. As the middle child of a family of five, La’el saw his mother work multiple jobs in order to provide for her children. “Man, I never saw my mom take a day off…I even remember her driving a big old dump truck; she hustled man, and I get my grind from her,” exclaimed La’el. Imagine the vision of your mom working diligently for years and now you are being taunted by millions of dollars. It would be hard for any young man to say no to that kind of “cheese.” Imagine you enter the draft and get paid. During your first game you suffer a season-ending injury that you are never able to recuperate from. You have blown all of your signing bonus money because you were not mentally ready for all that cash. NFL contracts are

usually not guaranteed, so your source of income is gone. Now you’re left unemployed, and without an education to fall back on. La’el decided that this would not be his fate and he learned something valuable in the process. “Maturity was the most important lesson I learned. You can show a guy how do things. But until a guy truly understands the level of maturity he needs and grows up, you’re just beating a dead dog.” Any team looking to draft La’el, is getting a player who is focused and concentrated on being the best. He was asked what his ideal team to play for would be and why a General Manager should draft him. He stated, “Any team that loves football, plays for one another, and is focused on winning the Super Bowl…I have a mindset that I want to be one of the best offensive linemen to ever play the game.” His confidence in himself and on the football field is something that he carries over into his personal life, including his fashion sense. Recently, social media has been a huge part of American society and professional sports. Sports critics of social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram believe that player representatives should control these platforms. La’el believes “players should handle their own social media; you’re a grown man. You should know what to say and what not to say.” As far as fashion, La’el does not have a stylist but he does not seem like the type of man who needs one. When asked who he thought was the best-dressed athlete, he answered, “Of course Imma have to say myself.” You can catch Mr. Collins in True Religion Brand Jeans, a Louis Vuitton woven, Balenciaga shoes, and a Gucci belt on any given night out. His barber, Brad, owns DaSpot in Louisiana and is the person who keeps his haircuts crisp. La’el seems as dedicated to his swag as he is to the game, making him the perfect man to protect your NFL quarterback.

InkMonstarr Before the Ink Dries words YISRAEL ROBINSON

It’s 3p.m. in Calabasas, California. The air is as smooth as silk. The sun shines on the gold Chanel chains of West Coast rapper InkMonstarr. Standing six feet tall in his Air Force Ones, the young artist enjoys the March weather as the breeze rustles the strings of his untied shoe laces. Adorned in tattoos and topped with red hair, the Rap star is clearly not afraid to stand out from the rest. After all, those who follow a crowd usually get lost in it. As the “Rap Yo Set” rapper opens up to BLEU, his exterior begins to soften and his intellect shines through as he speaks on life lessons and the strong influence of his mother. “Of course I look up to the greats of my field, but I look up to my mother the most. Watching her as a single parent take care of me is what motivates me today,” he says. A tone of laughter creeps into his voice as he continues, “She’s this short Puerto Rican lady who always kicked my ass in the right direction, especially when my father wasn’t around.” He admits that the unfortunate loss of his father to drugs remains the greatest disappointment of his life. “It was hard losing my dad who I looked up to as my mentor and my coach, but this is why I appreciate my mother so much more.” Devastated but not defeated, InkMonstarr has risen to the occasion as a rare, well-rounded young rapper who is obviously ascending to great heights. With a new single and video entitled “Bang Yo Set” featuring Nipsey Hussle, the world sits in anticipation of what’s to come from him. Amidst a clan of established heavy-hitters and promising up-and-comers, Ink admits his ties within

the industry are deep but understands that there is one that has his best interest at hand. “Nipsey is definitely the homie and I respect his hustle tremendously. He is certainly one of the genuine people that looks out for me and is always honest.” With a select circle around him, it is obvious that Ink’s good character holds weight with others. Despite his very down to earth nature, his overall look might be considered intimidating to some. “I got my first tattoo at the age of sixteen and continued from there. That’s kinds of how I came up with my name.” Certain that he wanted to rap professionally, he understood he needed a name that was a clear reflection of himself. With consistently being referred to as a “Rap Beast” and covered in tattoos, the name InkMonster was conceived. “I think I was on Twitter with my mom standing over me, and she saw it as my Twitter name. She said she didn’t like how it was spelled. “You’re not a monster, you’re a star,” she explained to him. Like it is when most mothers intervene with their unsolicited advice, it proved to be right and worked out for the better. As a result, the name InkMonstarr was born. “The two R’s stand for the Rolls Royce I want to give her,” he adds laughingly. Working with WWE, and making appearances on E Network’s Total Divas, the California native is most certainly making his rounds. With more music on the way, and a bright future ahead, he understands his ultimate goal: “Yes I want to be an award-winning rapper, producer and entrepreneur, but at the end of the day I want to have power and actually have a say in the world. Some may consider Nova a newcomer to the game, but he has been actively pursuing his passion since the year 2000. After years of diligence and an uncompromising grind, Robbie Nova’s first mixtape landed in the hands of a man who is known to launch careers. In 2007, Konvict Muzik co-founder Akon heard The Introduction To The Future Of R&B and signed Robbie Nova to the R&B label. Soon after being signed to Konvict, he began to learn the realities of business. When asked about that time in his life, Robbie recalls: “It was a cool experience because I got to work with Akon. It was a gift and a curse. At the time, Lady Gaga was poppin and T-pain was poppin, so it was bittersweet because it was actually kind of frustrating to be signed to his label with him always being overseas. I wasn’t really getting to know what to do in the industry.” Although his time at Konvict Muzik was short lived, what he took from that experience prepared him for the rest of his career. “The situation definitely taught me to never stop. Don’t wait on anything or anybody. Just continue to do what you gotta do.”

The adversity that comes from being in the music business is an obstacle that many artists are forced to deal with, but Robbie’s commitment to succeed has conjured up moments of his career that prove his efforts have not been in vain. From performing for President Obama and First Lady Michelle to being featured on tracks with Maino, 50 Cent and Jim Jones, his zealous hustle continues to open doors that are elevating his musical career to lofty heights. His latest mixtape, The Robbie Nova Effect 2, which he released on January 6th of this year, possesses a key ingredient of what music has been missing: organic R&B. The mixtape features a dynamic mix of sultry ballads and up--tempo melodies spanning over twenty five tracks, and gives Robbie the opportunity to capitalize on an audience that desires real R&B. His accomplishments have landed him on top of the charts in Japan. When asked what he hopes to accomplish from his latest projects, the answer is simple-“I’m just trying to connect the dots and put out as much music as possible.”

ICE CUBE From Gangsta Rapper to Renaissance Man words DOMINIQUE CARSON

O’Shea Jackson, also known by his stage name “Ice Cube,” is truly an inexhaustible figure in the entertainment industry. He is a rapper, actor, producer, screenwriter, and director. For over 20 years, Ice Cube has truly made history and he doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon.

Ice Cube showed his versatility as an artist when he starred in John Singleton’s movie, Boyz N the Hood in 1991 as Doughboy. It was his first acting role and first time collaborating with Regina King, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut, and Nia Long. Singleton knew Ice Cube was perfect for his movie because he knew about the living conditions in South Central.

We have learned many life-lessons from Ice Cube through his music, movies, and the persona he has developed. The world first discovered Cube when he was a member of the notorious Hip-Hop group N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) in the late ‘80s with Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and M.C Ren. The group released Straight Out of Compton which includes three hit singles, “Straight Out of Compton,” “Gangsta Gangsta” and “Express Yourself.” It was the first album to be ranked double platinum with little to no airplay or massive touring. Even though the lyrics on the album were brutally aggressive--especially the song “F*** The Police”-- their musical style added a new mode of Hip-Hop, “Gangsta Rap.” After the group released the album, they were considered to be the godfathers of the new sound. Fans were impressed with the group because it spoke the truth about the way they were living in California. Ice Cube taught us that speaking one’s mind takes precedence over pleasing people.

Once the movie was released, Ice Cube became a bonafide superstar. He opened the doors for other rappers who wanted to take a shot at acting. He continued to release more albums, hit singles and was featured in movies including CB4, The Glass Shield, Higher Learning, Three Kings, Barbershop, and All About the Benjamins. But, Cube set himself apart from other rap artists when he wrote and produced his first classic movie, Friday in 1995 with Chris Tucker, earning $28 million and produced two sequels, Next Friday and Friday After Next with Mike Epps. In 1998 Cube not only made his directorial debut with The Players Club, introducing actress, Lisa Raye to the hearts of America, but also launched his own production company, CubeVision. Critics considered him to be the “Bill Cosby of his generation,” when he released the children’s movie and television sitcom, Are We There Yet?

Amidst N.W.A.’s success, there were issues with management and money which led to Cube’s resignation from the group after he did not receive his proper share for the albums Straight Outta Compton and Eazy-E’s solo piece, Eazy-Duz-It. It was a courageous move for Ice Cube because he was stepping out as a solo artist and many wondered if he could achieve a high level of success without N.W.A. With the support from his family, his wife, Kim and his inner strength, Ice Cube released his first platinum selling solo album, AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted in 1989 and discovered rap artist Yo-Yo.

Ice Cube is a hip-hop legend who has remained true to himself and has stayed relevant within the rap music genre. On Vh1’s Behind the Music, Ice Cube told his sons, O’Shea “OMG” Jackson, Jr. and Darryl “Doughboy” Jackson, “There’s no reason for me to retire while I still have a tongue in my mouth. As long as I can still speak my words and my thoughts, why stop?” He is an MC that challenges people to think outside of the box, to take risks, to be frank and have a sense of humor. He calls on humans to express themselves, to embrace family life and to live up to their full potentials. Ice Cube is still prodigious in 2015, which speaks volumes for the MC’s future.
