THE GLOBAL ISSUE
There have been lots of ups and downs over the past year. Many of my friends and colleagues say that 2016 downright “sucked!” My response to them each time is, at least you made it through the year. For me, the glass has always been half full. I waste very little time on the small things that won’t really matter much in the long run. Shit, what really matter outside of family, health, and faith?
T
Don’t pick on the things I say, the things I do Just love me with all my faults, that way that I love you I’m begging you Don’t make me over Now that I can’t make it without you Don’t make me over I wouldn’t change one thing about you Just take me inside your arms and hold me tight And always be by my side, if I am wrong or right I’m begging you
After traveling around the globe, something like 13 countries in 12 months (but who’s bragging), the American experience seems not so bad. Yes, our politicians are full of bologna. Our housing is overpriced. And the Kardashians seem to be the unattainable aspirations of young people. However, try not having fresh clean water. Or round-a-bouts instead of stoplights. Or traveling five miles on foot to school. Our American reality starts to look a little less bleak. Whatever side of the election you fall on take this opportunity to get active. People have the right to be upset. But that is no excuse to just complain and take no action. Get involved. Do voter registrations. Run for local government. While doing all of that, sit back, relax and enjoy your BLEU!

2016 was full of many ups and downs, but one shining moment was BLEU Magazine’s 10 year anniversary. To celebrate, family, friends, and supporters of BLEU gathered at Duane Park in Downtown Manhattan to enjoy a night of food, drinks, laughs, and fun, sponsored by NIVEA Men! In attendance, was R&B singing sensation Elle Varner, who brought the house down when she sang her hit single “Refill”. The guests of the night were also treated to a burlesque show where the dancers entertained the crowd with their vocals and sexy dance moves. Cook the rice over a low heat for 18 to 20 minutes, moving the pan and rotating it so that the rice cooks evenly. Lay the shrimp on top after 10 minutes and turn them when they have become pink. When the rice is done, turn off the heat and cover the pan with a large piece of foil.
3 Steam the mussels with a finger of water in a pan with a tight-fitting lid. As soon as they open, they are cooked. Throw away any that have not opened.

Curaçao, W.I. Pronounced “KEWR-E-SOW,” Curaçao is a Dutch Caribbean island, frequently associated as the third and largest of the ABC Islands (completed by Aruba and Bonaire). Its warm sunny climate is typical year-round, with trade winds averaging 5.6 m/s. The island is home to less than 150,000 residents from over 55 different cultures. The official tender is the Netherlands AnPllean Guilder, also called the Florin, but US currency is widely accepted.

to Bandelier National Monument. With its petroglyphs and wall art, this once sprawling community links history with the still thriving communities that surround it. Native culture is alive and strong in New Mexico; No greater preserved than in Santa Fe. If it were left up to the history books, Native American culture has been wiped out. Those are complete misconceptions. The culinary and art scene rival any other major city in the U.S. If time permits, visit the Santa Fe School of Cooking. Koko Sushi A night in Green Bay is not complete without eating at Koko Sushi, an intimate and festive dining experience. Gary Flood, a master sushi chef from California, makes some of the best creative sushi in Green Bay: Godzilla Roll, Where’s Bob, Hand Grenades, etc. This menu is specifically built for sushi and non-sushi lovers. For an individual that rarely eats sushi, I enjoyed this restaurant. I loved the Godzilla and Buffalo Rolls. Both are my favorites but you can choose over 25 other selections of sushi. Also the sweet potato fries were delicious, which is a common side dish used in most restaurants. Either way, you can enjoy sushi night with your family and friends before heading out to other places in Green Bay.

Titletown Brewing Company Voted as one of USA Today’s 10 Best Brewpubs in the country, the Titletown Brewing Company, which is named after the 13 world championships won by the Packers, features countless options of food to eat. You can taste the Titletown Cheese Curds, Wisconsin Brat Platter, Spicy Elk Burger, Drunk Mac & Cheese Pizza, and much more. They also have their own Titletown beer list featuring award winning craft beer: Boathouse Pilsner (Gold), Johnny Blood Red (Silver) and Dark Helmet Schwartzbier (Bronze). I remember drinking the Boathouse Pilsner and it taste so good that it made the more common beers irrelevant. Even the other two drinks were great, although I’m not a fan of red and dark beers. But besides the drinks, the best moment was drinking from the Beerbler, which is a beer fountain. It was cold, fresh, and sustainable. Too bad it is only in Green Bay, but remember to take photos for this icon spot.

Parallel 44 Winery The Parallel 44 Winery is one of the best wineries in Wisconsin. Owned by Steve Johnson and Maria Milano, they produce great wine made by their vineyard. Going into the winery, they showed me one of the world’s finest grape growing and winemaking region. The drinks are sparkling and fruity at the same time. I thought tasting some of their best work is much different compared to New York or other states. Their production facility is efficient demonstrating how well they know what they are doing. They offer wine tastings as well depending on the season. If you are a wine lover, try them out when you visit Green Bay.

Green Botanical Garden A big city is not complete without having a Botanical Garden, and Green Bay has a beautiful one. The Green Botanical Garden features 47 acres of display gardens and natural areas capturing the beauty of four wonderful seasons. Even in a short tour, I saw some terrific flowers and creative statues. One statue they described says it can grant your secret wish as well, which would be true if some people gave feedback on the results. There are also winter and spring performances in the garden, so they are prepared for any type of weather coming in Green Bay. Be sure to visit this garden, as it is a perfect place for flower and non-flower lovers.
5
Segway the Fox Tours If you want to experience a fun activity in Green Bay, try out the Segway tour. The Segway tour, located on the Rustic Roads, offers a viewing of natural woodlands and an open farmland. Riders get to see the slight hills, which can be dangerous if you cannot control the Segway. Going on the electric vehicle was tricky at first but very easy once you get the hang of it. When I was first on it, they told me to stand and to control it with my feet. To go fast move forward, to stop slowly move back. Once I got it, it was fun. They offer other tours such as Historical, Packer, or Nature themes. Be sure to be safe and have fun with these electric vehicles.
6
Lambeau Field Open since 1957, this is by far the best part of Green Bay. Looking at it from the outside coming out of the Packers Heritage Trail Trolley, I was impressed by how big it is. The Green Bay Packers when they first started as a franchise were having their games at the City Stadium from 1925 to 1956. But they wanted to have their own turf and thus Lambeau Field came into existence. So many places you can explore inside the stadium from the 1919 Kitchen & Tap sports bar to the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame showing historic moments, and even going on a tour of the field itself. Heck even checking out the Packers Pro Shop provides great gifts for die-hard Packer fans. This really is a memorable experience. It is open all year long even after the season is over and perfect for sports and non-sports fans, even if you don’t like the team.

Fine Tuned Derek Minor Conveys A Powerful Message In Reflection WORDS DOMINIQUE CARSON PHOTOGRAPHY RYAN MCLEMORE
In October of 2016, Derek Minor released his sixth album Reflection. It is a different concept from his previous projects. Minor focused on an important issue that we face in the United States: identity crisis. Although he is stern and emphatic with his words, he understands why people can sometimes lose their way in this world. But, Minor would like listeners to keep their heads up and not to give up! He says, “You’re destined for greatness; God created you so you’re not an accident.” He also added it’s important for you to find your purpose on this earth with God’s counsel and the overall message for the Reflection album is “reflect God, reflect greatness.” And with hard work, dedication, and promotion, Reflection is a Top 10 album on the Billboard’s Christian and Rap charts. The album was also number 15 on the Independent Album charts, #2 on iTunes US Hip-Hop Albums chart, and on Amazon’s Best Sellers at #1 on their MP3 Rap & Hip-Hop Albums chart. On Reflection, he worked with one of the most prominent singer-songwriters of our generation, BJ the Chicago Kid. They collaborated on the song, “Until I’m Gone,” where Minor shares his humble beginnings before superstardom and paying homage to his roots. He also worked with R&B songstress, Chrisette Michele, Hollyn, Camille Faulkner, and Janice Gaines. Minor makes time to launch his Tennessee hip-hop sound to the music world while managing his record label, Reflection Music Group and working on other production projects. Bleu spoke with the MC about the new album, working with BJ the Chicago Kid, touring, and so much more. You can listen to more of Minor’s music on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play. BLEU: Let’s talk about your single, “Until I’m Gone,” ft. BJ the Chicago Kid. DEREK MINOR: “Until I’m Gone,” is a song that talks about my early days growing up in Tennessee and not forgetting where I came from. I am still humbling myself, no matter how high I go. I have to stay grounded and remember what’s important. You can easily be blinded by the money or the superficial things in life when you forget about your principles and values. I have to follow God’s standards, not man’s because I am reflection of Him. And that’s the message I’m portraying in the video by showing you parts of Tennessee. The song also made me think about my mom’s devoted Christian values and telling me I was made in God’s image.
What was it like working with BJ the Chicago Kid? Aww, man, BJ the Chicago Kid is a dope artist! I have been a fan of his music after watching him on BET’s Music Matters and his voice is enormous! BJ is an awesome artist to work with and he is very deep. I respect his caliber; he was the perfect artist I was looking for the “Until I’m Gone,” record. BJ is cool, down to earth, a great singer, and would like to work with him again in the near future. 62

Let’s talk about your latest project, Reflection. Well for starters, I love the recognition the album is receiving thus far on the charts. It’s a huge accomplishment, Reflection is number two on iTunes. The album is right behind The Game and Drake. But, Reflection is different from my other [projects] because of the message. I believe the message I’m informing people [with] will resonate with them. I want people [to stand] in [front of] the mirror and tell themselves that they’re destined for greatness despite their circumstances. You are worth so more because you’re a child of God. I want my fans and everyone else to know, God put in your heart to deliver your best. You are amazing, strong, powerful, and don’t you ever forget it. And while I was recording the album, I had this concept in mind because I know someone is struggling with identity and/or self-confidence. I really put a lot of time and effort on this record. I feel very proud of this project because it’s an hand-crafted piece of work. Any tours in the works? Right now, we are working on a tour. The tour is going to be 25 different cities for the month of February and March. I love touring and interacting with my fans. It’s more personal and intimate. When you’re performing live, it’s completely different; it’s just a different energy. Each time you visit a city, their energy is different. The fans is connecting with you and your music especially when you sing one of their favorite records. It’s just another form of intimacy with your fans because it reintegrates your love for certain songs. Now I know you planned an album release in Nashville. How do you feel each time you return to your hometown to promote your latest works? You have to Nashville! That’s my home. I was born in Michigan, Detroit to be exact but Nashville was my musical city. And Nashville is known as one of the most important musical cities. I believe Nashville made me musically and inspired to be free in my music. My city influenced me to make meaningful and real music. So, yes it’s always good to come home each time when I am releasing a new project. I know you have a B.A. degree in Record Industry Management. Looking back now, why was it important for you to attend college even though you have a successful career in music? I graduated from college because I knew how important it is to get an education. Education is very important and a valuable tool that no one can take away from you at all. I was the first male to graduate from college. I was awarded a four-year academic scholarship so it was important for me to take my studies seriously. But, now I have children and wife, my degree is worth more. The degree is bigger than myself. I am leaving a legacy for my children and leading by example. I want them to have standards and understand why education is imperative in life. Education is a tangible thing that should not be taken lightly. My life story and degree can inspire youth to aim high and reshape their thinking. I want the youth to say themselves, “If Derek can do, then I can do it also.” I want everyone to achieve and once again reflect greatness.

Many of us are familiar with Cory Hardrict because he is a talented actor, married famous television twin Tia Mowry, shared his profound love story on social media, and a family man. Hardrict also has a child with Mowry, named Cree Taylor Hardrict.
Los Angeles, Lovelace, Warm Bodies, Transcendence, Pacific Blue, City of Angels, Boston Public, NYPD Blue, Strong Medicine, Lincoln Heights, The Shield and Cold Case, Heroes, He’s Not That Into You, just to name a few.
Through his over decade long career Cory Hardrict has made a name for himself. However, some may not know about his journey to stardom and his past struggles. It wasn’t an easy road for Hardrict but with faith, persistence, consistency, and prayer, he immersed himself into acting.
However, the hard work doesn’t stop there. Hardrict was recently featured in the Oscar nominated film, American Sniper with Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller in 2015. You can also catch him in the independent film, Brotherly Love, on Netflix and will play Haitian Jack in the 2PAC biopic, All Eyez on Me in 2017. Haitian Jack was a music manager and executive for the late rap icon.
The Chicago native began his career when he was featured in local television shows, commercials, and print ads. But, Hardrict earned his first national gig as a cast member in the Oprah Winfrey’s film, There Are No Children Here. The film was an enjoyable experience for Hardrict but an eye opener at the same time. He was ready to hone his craft as an actor but needed to make some serious sacrifices if he wanted a shot in showbiz. It was essential for Hardrict to pursue his dreams so he moved to Los Angeles with $75. He said good-bye to the Midwest and hello, California. After settling in the Golden State, Hardrict was featured on television series, Smart Guy and Felicity. He also earned a shot on the big screen, debuting in the romantic comedy, Fox 2000 Pictures’ Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore and David Arquette. After the movie, he appeared in a plethora of films and television series including, Crazy/Beautiful, Battle:
Hardrict took time from his busy schedule to speak with Bleu Magazine about chasing the dream, finding the love of his life over a decade ago, fatherhood, his Netflix series, upcoming projects, and the life-lessons he learned along the way. Check out our exclusive with the film star! BLEU MAGAZINE: Thank you Corey for speaking
with Bleu today; we greatly appreciate it. I want to talk about your next movie, Spectral. CORY HARDRICT: Spectral is a science and thriller film that made it’s debut in December. In the film, we are fighting with supernatural beings that are trying to take over New York City. It’s a great film for those who are interested in action films. I work with talented people, from James Badge Dale to Nic Mathieu, the director.

CAN Can you explain to us your role in the movie Destined? I am thankful for being a part of this film; it’s a great movie. In the film, I play two characters, Sheed and Rasheed. One is an architect and the other is a drug lord in two different worlds. The film gives you a representation of life’s parallels which are corporate and street life along with gentrification. cracks. It was split into two characters as a way to let people the possible outcomes if we go left or right. What was it like seeing Destined at the LA Film Festival and American Black Film Festival? I love the festival circuit and it was an amazing feeling to watch your film again at those festivals. People are recognizing my art and talent which is always a plus. I just want to keep it going from here on out. I make movies for the people, not for the money. You’re also in the Tupac biopic, All Eyez on Me? What was it like playing Haitian Jack? It is truly a biopic worth watching! I enjoyed playing him in the movie and he was portrayed differently from songs and the media. He was an important person in Pac’s life, offered him guidance and support. I wasn’t nervous because I love playing characters who are authentic and real. In order for me to play this role correctly, I had to do my research and study Haitian Jack. I had many conversations with Jack and he made sure I played his character correctly. It’s going to be a great film; Demetrius Shipp Jr, the guy who plays Pac is basically his twin. I am rooting for him because he is reliving Pac in this movie. How have you evolved as an actor from when you first started? I look back on my life and I believe I was able to have a career as an actor because of God, my mother, and starring in my first professional film,

There Are No Children Here as an extra. It was a big deal for me because after the film, I fell in love with acting. And 22 years later, I can reveal real life experiences through art. My art has the ability to intimidate real life and I am giving back to people at the same time. It’s always about the people, not me., I understand without God, I wouldn’t have a successful career in this business. And now that I am a husband and father, my outlook on life changed greatly. I am a grown man who has a support system at home, my wife Tia and son Cree. The entertainment industry is known to be very strenuous and cut-throat. How do you balance family with work? First of all, people need to know that celebrities are still human beings. The only difference between me and the “average person,” according to society is money. And with that being said, my family and home life comes first. I am a family man who appreciates his support system. My wife and son keep me grounded. My wife, Tia was there for me when I didn’t have anything but believed in me. As a man, it is important for me to be there for my family and keep everything in its’ proper perspective. I separate
my personal life from my career. Acting is a job, family is my main priority. Would you like your son, Cree to join the family business? I mean he was offered a few commercials and projects. But, honestly, I want him to be happy and enjoy being kid. I don’t want to pressure him into this business. I want Cree to go to school, have fun, and learn. He’s five and already like sports. He also plays the piano so he is pretty much exploring his talents and interests. What advice would you offer young adults who do not have a strong support system at home? NEVER give up! Fear is the trick of the enemy. It will definitely talk you out of your dream. You have to stay focus and keep your eyes on the prize. You have to believe yourself; if you don’t, then who will? Your way of thinking has to change and understand nothing happens overnight. I would also say work on your craft, have faith, trust God, and understand that all things are possible. Go for it, aim high!
IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT THE PEOPLE, NOT ME. I UNDERSTAND WITHOUT GOD, I WOULDN’T HAVE A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN THIS BUSINESS. CORY HARDRICT Issue 46

WHEN THE THUNDERMAN ROLES… Jack Griffo Talks Grace And Gratitude In Hollywood WORDS KENT OLDEN PHOTOGRAPHY RYAN ORANGE

The theme song to the Nickelodeon hit show The Thundermans tells a story of a family secret superheroes that is just trying to be as normal as possible in the world. Kinda like how we view celebrities: our superheroes we strive to be like while they strive to be normal like us. As any celebrity can tell you that, their lives are nothing like what you see play out on your TV screens these days. Publicly, they have to maintain their composure through stresses of superstardom at all costs because the public lives vicariously through them, while privately, their lives may be nothing like what we’ve all decided they should be. When the cameras stop rolling, celebs are just people who just want to be free to be. Jack Griffo, star of Nickelodeon’s The Thundermans sits down with Bleu to tell us just how he balances his public and private life, and how fame has given way to grounding and gratitude. It’s two weeks before Thanksgiving, and New York City — which is always hustling and bustling — is gearing up for even more excitement in just a couple of days. Nickelodeon is about to tape its annual Halo Awards. Hosted by Nick Cannon, the Halo Awards is an award show created to celebrate the courage and commitment of kids across the country. As Jack Griffo preps for his participation in the shoot, all the while going back and forth to rehearsals for a play he’s doing with Matthew Morrison, Kevin McHale, and Raven-Symone, he takes a moment to reflect on his own courage as a child star, and give some insight on his plans for transition into grown up Hollywood.
Born and raised in Orlando, Florida, Jack grew up in a family focused on the arts, having two brothers who moved to New York City to pursue theater. Following their example, Jack starting taking on local theater roles to begin to hone his craft. Much like how Max Thunderman — the character he plays on The Thundermans — refuses to be outdone by his sister Phoebe, Jack’s sights on stardom set him up to be seen by agents and casting directors from all over, and would ultimately bring on a life-changing decision. “I moved to Los Angeles when I was 13. Los Angeles is a different world,” says Jack, as he recalls his start in the industry. “I spent three years training and learning the industry. They prep you to not expect much at first, but I landed The Thundermans at 16.” A star at 16, Griffo was flung into the spotlight and subsequently faced with what can be a gift and a curse for all child stars: having to grow up in the public eye. He finally got what he was after, but what was it going to cost him? Would this newfound child stardom play out like Malcolm Jamal Warner’s or Bobby Brown’s? “I think everything is what you make it,” says Griffo, discussing how he balances his extremely demanding work-life balance. “All I can do is stay grounded and keep the right people around me. I have a really tight circle of friends that create the right environment. My whole team stands behind me.”

WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT WHAT YOU GET / LIVIN’ OUR LIVES WITH A SECRET / WE FIT RIGHT IN / BETCHA NEVER GUESSED / CUZ WE’RE LIVIN’ OUR LIVES JUST LIKE ALL THE REST…
Living life in the highs and lows of celebrity, Griffo takes note of his fellow Hollywood counterparts as life lessons, and rightfully so. Given the highly publicized random disappearance of Dave Chappelle and the recent breakdown and hospitalization of Kanye West, it definitely is understood that you never know what someone is dealing unless you live it for yourself. Aware of the heavy load that has to be carried when you live life for the world to see, Jack touches on his own experience then and now, and what he plans. “No one realizes what kind of a burden it can be until you experience it. I’m not mega-famous, but I empathize with those who are. I can’t even sit down at a restaurant and eat without being stared at, but it’s all about staying in the right mind space. Just keep doing that.” Having honed in on a master plan for maintaining mind and spirit in the spot-
light, Jack keeps that same momentum when it comes to expanding his career. Starting with voluntarily doing his own stunts on Nickelodeon, Griffo is looking to branch out into producing and directing. With a passion for being behind the scenes, we just may see something from Jack before we know it. In early 2017, worldwide distribution begins for Jack’s upcoming movie Apple of My Eye, starring Burt Reynolds, and the taping for Season 4 of The Thundermans beginning in January. In the meantime, Jack is just enjoying stardom as Max Thunderman and living life as Jack Griffo, successfully balancing the two. “Max Thunderman was really my best role,” says Jack. “I love every aspect of it. It ran the gamut of what it was like to be a teenager who just happened to have super powers. Kinda like being a celebrity,” because we all need to remember that celebrities — and superheroes — are just like us.

SKATE ON Neftalie Williams Strives for Cultural Diplomacy in Building Communities through His Skateboarding Class WORDS RAYMOND MORA
W
“With skateboarding for me there’s something I sort of have to always be into when you’re in the East Coast,” says Neftalie Williams. “At the time I started skating, it was sort of new to a lot of people. So I think that a lot of times when people on the East Coast have that work ethic and pay if this is the thing I’m into, I’m just really gonna go hard at it.” Since the 1940s, skateboarding has been viewed as a less popular sport than the mainstreams ones like football, baseball, and basketball, but over the past few years, it has exploded with billions of dollars invested into the skateboarding market, making the X Games must-watch television, but it is much more than a competition. Compared to other sports skateboarding is a lifestyle that can bring diverse people together. Williams wants individuals to understand that. The Massachusetts native is a lecturer and research director for the USC Annenberg Institute of Sports, Media and Society (AISMC). He teaches his students a class called “Skateboarding and Action Sports in Business, Media, and Culture.” This course is the first of its kind in this country. The skateboard professor is striving for approval from academia for the growth of the program affecting other states.

“I’m helping convince academia that if they want to engage with kids in the future, they [must] find new and interesting ways to do it,” says Williams. To tell the stories about globalization, to tell stories about public diplomacy, we need to reach kids where they are. And kids are heavily involved in doing all the right things in skateboarding culture. It’s sort of enlightening academia that here is a new space to be in.” The skateboard enthusiast wants to use skateboarding as a tool for cultural diplomacy. There is freedom within this sport and does have competition. Overall, he is trying to engage and build communities. He has already empowered and united skateboard communities in South Africa, Brazil, and The Netherlands. Williams is also the research and development director of CubaSkate. Williams gives his students an opportunity to look at the entire skateboard business ecosystem, media, brands, brand directors, etc. This is included in their midterms and finals. Twenty year old public relations major, Megan Webster did not expect the class to be what it is. “It is a lot of heavy lecture based in the fact that it is more talking than discussion,” says Webster. “There’s not a lot of necessary assignments and where you have to go to do this or that, it’s more of getting us to think about all these things that are happening in action sports, as well as the world. We use all of the things that we talked about, like
politics and diplomacies, but we frame it in the minds of skateboarding.” She really liked how most people focused on the culture side of skateboarding, not the actual skateboard riding. The fact that anyone can be accepted makes it interesting unlike the main sports in this country. Webster expects the program to grow at USC. Another student named Thiebault Gauthier, studying communications and music as a minor, believes it is growing on the international side and into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “Yes skateboarding is growing a lot, especially in the last five or so years, because skateboarding has always been something that every skater can relate to regardless of their age, or gender” says Gauthier. “Especially with the Olympics coming around and accepting skateboarding as a sport, it’s putting a global spotlight on the culture.” Both of these students see the light at the end of the tunnel on skateboarding impacting communities, but Professor Williams has long-term goals. In five years he wants to have his own center for skateboarding and action sports, using it for community engagement and enrichment. “If there is anything I’m proud of is that at least increasing awareness and synergy between the communities,” says Williams. “But I still have a long way to go and there are a lot of things I want to do.”

OUR ARRIVAL,OUR STORY Remembering the events of 1619 that are impacting present African American communities. WORDS EDRIC ROBINSON
Our story - the story of black people in what would become the United States of America begins over 300 years ago when the first Africans arrived aboard the White Lion ship through Hampton Roads at Point Comfort, present day Fort Monroe in Hampton, VA. According to historical documents, the Dutch ship carried “20 and odd” Africans, who were eventually traded for provisions and supplies. That was August 1619, today several organizations are spearheading commemoration efforts in recognition of this history and building anticipation for the 400th anniversary in three years. This year’s 2016 ceremony commenced on a blistering 90 degree Saturday in August and was hosted by Barbara Hamm Lee, of WHRO national public television. The event featured a keynote address by journalist Roland Martin and included brief remarks from Governor of Virginia Terry McAuliffe, Virginia Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, Hampton Virginia Mayor Donnie Tuck and Virginia State Senator Thomas K. Norment Jr. of Williamsburg. Also in attendance were the descendants of William Tucker, 94

the first person of African ancestry born in the 13 British Colonies, whose parents were among the first group of Africans to arrive. Event goers gathered on Fort Monroe’s grounds, with its breathtaking water views and miles of shoreline, to witness cultural expressions in song, dance, and a history lesson that too often is overlooked.
can’t even tell you how many times I read and reread them,” Martin recalls. “So, for me it wasn’t in high school or college where I first saw photos of slaves; folks being lynched, the civil rights movement, Dr. King, Jesse Jackson, Fannie Lou Hamer. I’ve always read and understood our place in this country,” he continues.
A sit down with Roland Martin stressed the importance of utilizing events like this 1619 commemoration to teach our history and not ‘his’ story he says. “Why would I wait on the education system to teach our kids about us, when history has shown the education system has no desire to teach us? That’s an oxymoron,” Martin explains.
Martin also addresses what seems to be an indifference or lack of enthusiasm seen among some African Americans over anything regarding slavery. Rapper Snoop Dogg spoke to an element of this attitude by posting a video via Instagram in May 2016 saying the “Roots” remake by the History Channel that debuted on Memorial Day this past summer is offensive. In his rant he says he wishes for more positive films and TV shows. Martin has criticized Snoop for his comments but acknowledges this indifference and says, black indifference to slavery is because of white indifference. “You can’t ignore 1619 (referencing the year of Africans arrival) to present day. Literally we’ve had 350 years of total denial and degradation. That was the beauty of white
Thinking back to the first time he learned of the history of Africans Americans in this country, Martin can vividly picture the leather bound books that Ebony magazine produced back in 1971 titled the History of Black America. “I was six or seven years old reading those books. It took me through the beginning of time from slave arrival to present day. I
supremacy – because it worked. So when you talk indifference you cannot ignore that it is a result of literally decades of denying black folks this sense of value,” Martin says. As Martin and many of the presenters of the ceremony acknowledge, the events of 1619 are directly related to what’s happening in our country today. “Look at our political climate. When you see the Governor of Virginia provide voting rights to formerly incarcerated and their rights were taken based upon racism that’s linking the initial act to present day. When Donald Trump talks about 15% of black folks are unemployed which is a false number, when he talks about poor schools but you wouldn’t hear him talk about 1619 and black folks not being allowed to read, if you were caught reading you would potentially be put to death. You can’t ignore that.” Throughout the day, families of all sizes participated in organized walking tours, art exhibits, historical film viewings and group activities like dance and jewelry making with cowrie shells. Fort Monroe’s grounds are made up of over 500 acres and include about 170 historic buildings. Under a gazebo near
the Commanding General’s Residence, Virginia Congressman Robert Scott discussed with Bleu his take on the challenges for building enthusiasm and support for commemorations like this year’s and the 400th anniversary in 2019. “We have a challenge. Four hundred years of African American history starts with the arrival [of the first Africans] in 1619 and telling the story. There’s a Virginia commemorative committee that has the same responsibility and there’s a national commission recognizing that this is really a national story. 2019 is three years from now so we have time to get the story told. But it’s going to take some effort. State commission and federal commission will go a long way in making that possible,” says the Congressman.
portant that young people in the educational system have a real deeper understanding of this history, we keep wanting to dumb things down and oversimplify things. But you don’t create thinkers and dreamers that way,” Newby-Alexander says. “I’m tired of people talking about slavery like it’s a chapter in our history. We need to confront the reality of who we are and that way we understand how far we’ve actually come. Yes we still have a long way to go, but historical events like this allows us to think- its critical to be very honest about who we are and how our nation was formed. We have a unique history and we should embrace that history and celebrate how we’ve overcome these prejudices and short comings instead of hiding it,” concludes the Professor.
As Historian Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, professor at Norfolk State University sees it, this place was ground zero for America and the nation should rally around this history and be a part of commemorative efforts. During a brief sit down at Fort Monroe’s Authority office, the historian detailed the unique history of Fort Monroe’s position, from being a waterway link to a departure point for slaves during the Underground Railroad. “I think it’s im-
The 1619 remembrance and commemoration efforts is without a doubt noteworthy. It is to be seen how the committee’s efforts to build national enthusiasm for events leading to the 2019 anniversary will result. The year 1619 marked the arrival of the first Africans, planted the seeds of the American slave trade and led to the impact of subsequent generations of Africans and, later, African Americans in shaping the nation’s economy and culture. This is our story.

KENNY BAKER WORDS RAYMOND MORA
One of the most beloved characters in Hollywood history is R2-D2. The character proved to everyone that a little person actor could make it on the big screen. Born in Birmingham, England, Baker brought excitement as R2D2 for all Star Wars fans since his first appearance in the 1977 classic, Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope, and other iconic TV shows and movies. But the man did other things before making his mark. In 1951, a woman approached him about joining a theatrical troupe made up of dwarfs and little people. This was his first time being part of show business, and later joined a circus. During those times, there were limited roles for dwarfs and often the only work was in the circus. Then he learned to ice skate and appeared in ice shows. He also formed a comedy group called the Minitones with entertainer Jack Purvis, which played in nightclubs. Baker made his first theatrical debut in a small role for the film Circus of Horrors. But two films later, his entire acting career changed when he received a call from George Lucas, creator of Stars Wars.“I started out ice skating with “Holiday On Ice” and just got offered the part of R2 by chance,” says Baker. Baker played the little droid everyone loves - and contrary to rumor R2D2 is not operated through a remote control. He made all of the noises and communicated with C-3PO, played by Anthony Daniels, during the films. During that time he also married actress Ellen Baker, who passed away in

1993, co-starred with him in Wombling Free. For over 35 years, he appeared in six Star Wars films, and served as a consultant for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Standing at 3 feet 8 inches, it was the perfect role in a wildly successful film franchise. Star Wars films continue to pack theatres and break Box Office sales records. During the 1980s and 1990s Baker also appeared in Flash Gordon and the British TV series The Goonies, both playing the dwarf. The supporting actor of any film can make it flow smoothly if they do their role, and Baker was about that. Even at an old age, Baker was still effective. Unfortunately, he died on Aug 13, 2016 at age 81 due to a chronic condition. Baker’s niece, Abigail Shield told The Guardian said, “it was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.” Friends and colleagues still speak with respect for his work. Baker may not be with the acting world anymore, but he is slowly becoming an inspiration for the little people that want to be future stars. “There are not very many opportunities for little people in the industry,” Baker once said. “There are small parts and character parts, but we don’t get the girl-at-the-end-of-the-film kind of parts... but I was quite happy with what I was doing.”
