h Lamar. Oh Khloe. We hardly knew ye. One minute they arrived and moved into the W Hotel, the next he’s in the D-League and now he’s on his way back to L.A. With everything that happened during this short season, maybe their stay in Dallas was just a pit stop while they took their reality show on the road. Before the lockout-shortened season, Cuban brought Odom into the championship fold. The deal was relatively low risk for Dallas. They gave up a first round pick and the trade exception for the deal that sent Tyson Chandler to New York. Remember when Commissioner Stern vetoed that big three-team trade back in December? Well Odom was supposed to be a part of it and was none too happy after learning about the Hornets trade publically. So there’s a chance that he was already coming into town with a bit of a chip on his shoulder about the whole thing. To make matters worse, his year was a running count of tragedies. First his 24-yearold cousin was murdered. Then he was involved in a fatal car accident involving a teenager. And not that this compares with, or is on par with, the heartbreaking devastation of those deaths, but the poor man did have to sit through his sister-in-law’s nano-nuptuals to Kris Humphries. How much anguish can the man take before it affects his game? The gossip around the Dallas ladies is that Odom is upset with the Kardashian clan, and his wife in particular. They say the show and his playing schedule was too much for Odom while he was in this fragile mindset. But I’m not convinced. I believe he may have thought this entire season would be lost to the lockout and he wouldn’t be playing any ball this year. He tried to catch up, but he simply wasn’t prepared and in game shape. Owner Mark Cuban probably tried to make things work, but ultimately saw that he wasn’t in the right mental or physical condition to keep this charade up. Cuban described the departure as “addition by subtraction.” Ouch. The

confrontation between these two couldn’t have been avoided. We all know Cuban lives and dies on the court with his players, and with him winning is the only option. Dallas will still owe Odom the balance of his $8.9 million salary for the season. He’ll be riding the list as inactive for the rest of the season. And if another team gets him on their roster by June 29th , must buy him out for $2.4 million or they’ll be on the line for the full $8.2 million that he is contracted for in the 2012-2013 season. All in all it was a mess. I was certain the rumor mill and upper crust would expel the OdomKardashians from the Metroplex, but I was wrong. Circumstance, bad timing, and a broken heart did them in. There are times when everyone must just cut their losses and go their separate ways. I’ll leave it up to Cuban to sum up the whole bust of an experience with the following quote: “Did I get my money’s worth? No,” Cuban said. “I don’t know that the word’s ‘cheated.’ But did I get my money’s worth? No.”

jon “bones” jones (15-1-0) vs. Rashad “Suga” evans (22-1-1)

ou want hype, here it is. Evans and Jones used to train together with Greg Jackson back in the day. Jackson took Jones in and it rubbed Evans the wrong way, as they were both to be 205 lb. contenders. Jones is one of the most dominant fighters that I have ever seen. There is something very special with him and anyone in the world would have trouble beating him. Anyone! Evans is a very smart fighter though, as well as a very good fighter. He has great wrestling and very explosive striking. If he connects it will be “night night” for Jones. This simply will not happen. Jones is better in every facet of the game. He is a better athlete, wrestler, striker and anything else athletic that you want to throw in there. Unless this cat has
gone Hollywood and is 100% consumed in market mode, he will dismantle Rashad Evans within three rounds. I call Jones via submission in the second round. Who will be next? This cat is unreal!
Chris Cope. Rory appears to be the more well rounded fighter here but Che’s stand up is very, very good. He has KO’d some very good strikers in his career and I don’t see MacDonald being a threat on the feet. Che’s weakness has been staying out of submissions and he will have a problem here. Rory will submit Che in the second round after being in trouble on his feet at least once. Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (9-2-0) vs. Ben Rothwell (31-8-0): This fight will showcase two very athletic big boys! Schaub has been on fire since entering the UFC only losing two of his six fights and to great opponents. Rothwell is a very tough cat, but he has not been too active in the last five years since the IFL dissolved. He also doesn’t really have any huge wins under his belt. I predict Schaub dominating this fight from the get go but not being able to finish Big Bad Ben. I predict a fairly bloody unanimous decision win for Schaub. He is hungry to bounce back after his recent loss to Nog.
Rory “Ares” MacDonald (12-1-0) vs. Che “Beautiful” Mills (14-4-0): Some folks are calling this fight the future of the welter weight division. Rory Mac has been very impressive thus far in his four UFC appearances. This cat is really good. Mills was very impressive as well in his first fight in the big leagues making quick work of

But it was the rotation of Colby Lewis, Derek Holland, Matt Harrison, Yu Darvish and Neftali Feliz that was instrumental in yielding just 17 runs in helping Texas to a 6 - 1 stretch. “We know what we have and one thing we try to make sure they know is to stay consistent,” Manager Ron Washington said Thursday after Holland’s two-run, eight-strikeout performance in a 6 - 1 home win over Seattle. By winning three of four against the Mariners and all three in Minneapolis, the Rangers entered the new week with an 8 - 2 record and leading Seattle by 2.5 games. The sweep of the Twins in Minnesota was their first since 1999. “If they are consistent and keep us in ball games we will win our share of games,” Washington said. “We tell them we have good defense so if they keep the ball in play, good things will happen.” After Darvish yielded four runs in the first inning of his April 9 major league debut, no starter gave up more than three runs. Coupled with a bullpen that outside of closer Joe Nathan has given up just two runs, the Rangers’ team earned run average ended the week at 2.30, best in the American League. “The starters take a lot of pride that this could be their coming out party,” said Michael Young. “We’ve pitched really well and played good defense which tends to fly under the radar with this team. The Tigers still have their pitching staff mostly intact, led by American League Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player Award winner Justin Verlander and closer Jose Valverde. What’s changed is the offensive lineup as Magglio Ordonez is gone and Detroit signed Prince Fielder to play first base and moved Miguel Cabrera to third base. So far everything is clicking as the Tigers lead the American League Central with a 6 - 3 record through Sunday. Fielder is batting .353 with two home runs and five runs batted in while Cabrera

hat use to be one of the purest games in America has shown it too could have a darker side. As with any sport, only the best are rewarded so, the need to be great is directly related to one’s prestige and more importantly one’s bank account. This Darwinian outlook on things birthed the industry of performance enhancing drugs. And when the going got tough some of the toughest got pumping. These guys let the juice loose and became speed bumps on the MLB’s road of steroid and Human Growth Hormone (HGH) users.
Alex Rodriguez A-Rod came clean about his steroid use from 2001 to 2003. Surprisingly it has had little effect on his career or his “bat”– A-Rod has been linked to Madonna, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Hudson. Alex continues his sure to be Hall of Fame career as a member of the Yankees is gunning for his 15th All-Star game and second World Series win. Just to keep things interesting Jose was also booted from Mexican League Baseball in 2012 for refusing to take a drug test. Roger Clemens “The Rocket” was accused of packing some extra fuel and indicted by a federal grand jury. The case ended in a mistrial, but the jury of public opinion is still out. Ultimately the damage is done as Roger’s image has taken a supreme shellacking since the allegations first arose. The first steps to his new trial began this week. Barry Bonds Perhaps the sports most infamous alleged steroid user (wink wink), Bonds still holds the MLB record for home runs in a season (73) and career homeruns (762). His record-breaking home run ball was purchased by clothing designer Marc Ecko and branded with an asterisk then donated to the Hall of Fame.

No kidding around Mavs get serious
T
he Dallas Mavericks know how important it is to win every game down the stretch to secure a playoff spot, yet in both games to start this four-game road trip the Mavs have had extreme difficulty closing out. It’s especially noticeable when Jason Kidd’s steady hand isn’t there to guide them. “It would’ve been good to have him out there” said Shawn Marion. “He rested and it’s good to get out there and get a win without our point guard.” It’s easy to blame Friday’s collapse on the fact that Jason Kidd took the night off to rest and wasn’t available to keep things steady down the stretch. Kidd had to be summoned back into the game at Golden State to right the ship. Not to say the Delonte West didn’t fill in splendidly for Kidd during his absence. He finished with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds after all, but when you’re missing one of the best closers in the history of the game it’s noticeable. West also gave the Mavs a bit of a scare when he went in for a slam-dunk and came down in pain after slamming his still-healing right ring finger against the rim. He stayed in the game and obviously finished strong but the turnovers down the stretch can’t be overlooked. It can’t be ignored that Golden State and Portland both rallied in the fourth quarters. The Warriors slashed a 19-point deficit to three early in the fourth quarter and Portland had a chance to turn a 24-point hole into a one-possession game in the final minutes of the game. The Mavericks need to figure out how close these games out and not take their foot off the gas pedal. It’s been a constant problem commonly linked to fatigue that likely won’t translate to the playoffs. “Hey, but it is what it is. …Rested, I still like our chances” said Dirk Nowitzki. Portland plays it tough Lost in the shuffle was how the Mavs won the season series against the Portland Trail Blazers 2-1, but it wasn’t easy. The first two in Dallas required three total overtimes, with the Mavs winning the first game in double overtime and the Blazers taking the second in one overtime. On Friday at Portland, Dallas led by more than 20 points in the final minute of the third quarter but won by just three points. Portland lost by a final score of 97-94 in both defeats and was outscored by a total of four points in the three games combined. If you’re looking for good Maverick tickets next year, Portland might be a great ones to nab. The Mavs eventually held on to win both games but it

took way more effort than the veteran laden team would have liked. On Friday they walked out of the Rose Garden with a 97-94 victory. The Mavericks still have yet to lock up a playoff spot but that doesn’t stop them from looking to make an impact there. Injuries continue to mount Dallas’ injury issues just won’t go away. With Jason Kidd resting Friday night after his return from a right groin strain, backup guard Roddy Beaubois left the game with a strained right calf. It could be a bigger loss for Beaubois than the team, which is deep with veteran guards to chew up minutes. Beaubois missed all of last postseason after suffering a foot injury in the regular-season finale. The third-year guard needs as much playing time as possible to prove himself to Rick Carlisle. Dallas will miss his dribble penetration and ability to lead fast breaks if he can’t get healthy in time for the playoffs.

Medication induced Nutrient Depletions

ver wondered why you don’t have the energy to get up and go like you used to have? Maybe you have just written it off to getting older or being too busy and worn down. You’ve tried eating healthy and you go to the gym but it’s all still a struggle. It may be time to peel back the layers of your daily activities, lifestyle pattern, the foods you eat and any medications you’re taking. Depletions of vitamins and nutrients critical to your health can occur when medications are taken over a period of time. This can inhibit the absorption, metabolism, storage, synthesis, transport, and excretion of vital nutrients. Additional factors that may negatively impact your nutritional health may include the use of multiple medications, age, lifestyle habits, and genetic predispositions. The loss of necessary levels of nutrients has been associated with a variety of health conditions including, depression, fatigue, immune deficiencies, increased risk of infections, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, osteoporosis, congestive heart failure, hypertension and more. Most individuals don’t think to reevaluate the

medications they are taking and the possible side effects it can cause, especially if it is a medication that they have been taking for an extended period of time. The very medications that can be necessary for your overall health and recovery can at some point be the hidden factor that is contributing to a health condition or symptom that would be thought to be completely unrelated. Today the combined use of many medications is called polypharmacy. The medical community is aware that too many medications for too long is not ideal for anyone long term. Many insurance companies are beginning to realize just how important this topic is as they create positions and departments that solely review patients medications as in return-to-work cases. This process revues employees current medications that have been on leave an extended period of time in which their medications may now be working against them returning to work as quickly. To find out if you need to supplement your diet, use this simple guide to determine which vitamins and nutritional supplements may be most appropriate for you and then speak with a qualified health care provider.

here are you originally from and how long have you been a Mavs Dancer? I’m originally from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area…born and raised a Texan! This is my second year as a Mavs Dancer. Favorite thing about being a Mavs Dancer? I have always been a Mavs fan! Growing up my parents had season tickets, but it only took me one time to see the dancers and know that is what I wanted to do! My favorite part of being a Mavs Dancer is just that…Being a part of this amazing organization and getting to do what I love…Dancing for the Mavs! Most memorable event or game? Winning the championship! Last year was the most amazing rookie year I could have ever asked for! Games 4 and 5 against the Miami Heat and the whole experience will be something I’ll never forget.
If you could have one superpower what would it be? If I could have a superpower I would want it to be flying, just because every superhero knows how to fly! Or to be able to read minds, I’d love to just know what some people are thinking.
What is your guilty pleasure? Candy! And Flaming Hot Cheetos! What is your dream vacation? I’d love to go to Australia! Maybe get to go to a zoo where you can hold koala bears or see the animals up close, I think it would be fun!

If a Blitz Weekly reader looked in your trunk, what would they find? Tons of Mavs posters, poms, I’m sure a pair of shoes, and jumper cables.
How much time and preparation does it take to be a Mavs Dancer? We practice constantly! At least three to four times a week. Plus we do practice and work out on our own time just to make sure we perform and look our best on game days. It takes quite a bit of our time to prepare, but it’s all completely worth it! Any parting words for your Blitz Weekly fans? GO MAVS!!!!! :)

t’s a lazy weeknight and the windows at Whitehall Exchange in the Bishop Arts district are open. A group of three young musicians sit around a table sipping on whiskey and water talking about the journey of their first full-length record and their impossibly cool sound. These musicians comprise part of the local band Dovetail and their new album Mount Karma has grabbed the attention of the Local Edge and the adoring public alike. A week preceding their CD release party at the Granada last month Dovetail had several promotional contests on their Facebook. The day before the show I entered on a whim and actually won. I’ve never won anything and was beyond stoked. Having only heard a few songs from their previous EP I knew them more by reputation and association than anything but I was excited to see what they had to offer live as well as on record. Dovetail’s live performance is a dynamic cocktail of classic and contemporary touches such as impeccable three and four part harmonies, vintage clothing and obscure John Lennon covers. Normally I’d consider this a recipe for certain failure brought on by unbelievable arrogance. But the undertaking of reinterpreting the angsty masterwork of a former Beatle was done so humbly I found myself caught up in the excruciating honesty of “Mother” and actually choked up as they followed this with “Can’t Feel You,” a melancholy original about giving up the ghost in welcome worn romance. Their solid rhythmic core leaves ample room for emphasis to be placed on Daniel Creamer’s keys and Philip Creamer’s vocals, reminiscent though certainly not derivative of the great Freddy Mercury. The melodic structure of the vocals and Tucker Cauble’s spacey guitar riffs give a transcendent quality to their tunes that is neither contrived nor pretentious. Two years in the making, Mount Karma tells a story not through the linear progression of a concept album but rather like an exhibit in impressionism where collectively the songs create vignettes or scenes that can be strung together and take on a new meaning. Songs like
the breathtakingly definitive “Speak” and searing archetypal single “Julie” stand solidly in the position of major events without giving concrete detail. The title track, “Mount Karma” is placed last on the album describing a journey of unintentional self-discovery. “It’s all about growth – our growth,” says vocal and keys co-writer Daniel Creamer. Lead vocalist and brother Philip backs that statement up, “We’re pursuing knowledge of what life is for us. We’re in heavy pursuit of what our purpose is.” He continues, “People feel like they’re creating their own reality, well, is that right or is that wrong? We got to the top of that idea and saw it from a different perspective, that’s Mount Karma.” Initially Mount Karma was scheduled to be recorded in 14 days by engineer and producer Beau Bedford in early 2010 but as the band’s sound developed and the concept grew things were re-recorded and
new tracks were added. “Beau is a staple in our music. He brings out the best in all of us.” Daniel says in reference to the producer who also took the stage with the band last month at the Granada for their CD release party. As is typical of Bedford’s work, the sound from the record is the same sound one gets in the live performance and vice
versa, a signature he seems to be establishing for himself and the artists lucky enough to work with him. In our conversation at Whitehall Exchange it becomes increasingly apparent that the emphasis in their endeavor is solidly on the music. They list such icons as George Harrison, Bob Marley, The Beach Boys and Queen as their influences and drawing inspiration from local acts such as Quaker City Night Hawks, Kirby Brown and Weekend Hustler. The plan for now is to continue performing together and working and writing with Beau Bedford. Mount Karma is available on iTunes. ATMOSPHERE Poke’s is a bar & grill, so expect to see typical bar staples for your dining experience. There will be flat screen TVs, some arcade-style games, pool tables, and oh yeah, a bar. Nothing extremely out of the ordinary except the feeling that you get while inside; everywhere that you look there is a smiling face or a polite nod to acknowledge your presence. It makes you feel at home. I refuse to be cliché and say it reminds me of Cheers so I will say it reminds me of Cheers in an It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia sort of way. SERVICE One of the best service experiences that I have had since well…maybe it was the best that I’ve had. Typically, bars are not known for their outstanding dining service but once again I was completely taken off-guard by how friendly, helpful, and insightful our waitress was (Thanks for recommending the cheese fries Megan, they were awesome!). Even though she was manning the bar and the adjacent tables (due to it being early lunch on a weekday), she was completely thorough and was right there to answer any barrage of questions that I chose to throw her way. FOOD Bring a fairly big appetite because the portions
By Feed Freddy – @BlitzWeekly A lot of times when you leave a restaurant and you’re walking back to your car you can think of five or six ways your experience there could have been better; they could have had better service, the meal was a bit skimpy, the service was so-so, or I wish they hadn’t used the entire salt container on my side-order of fries. But for this particular walk to the car the only thing that I did was smile. Here’s why:

here are sizable. We took on the Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Fries, Buffalo wings (Lemon Pepper with ranch), The Build Your Own Cheeseburger, and Macaroni-N-Cheese. The aforementioned cheese fries are good enough to attract a cult and move to Jonestown and for another taste of their gooey goodness I’d drink whatever Kool-Aid you put in front of me. The wings could hold their own with any bar wings in the city and the burger will completely torpedo your calorie count, but it is worth the extra month and a half on the treadmill. The mac’ n cheese wasn’t groundbreaking, but did hit the spot. It’s hard to reinvent the wheel when it comes to macaroni and cheese without getting to Yuppie about it. So, Poke’s “kept it real” and brought it back to the basics.
BLITZ-WORTY Great service, friendly atmosphere, good food, and it’s an alcohol oasis. After leaving Poke’s I wrote the following letter to my wife…”Dear XXXXX, I am never coming home. I like it here, they let me eat all the wings I want and they don’t tell me that I can’t have extra cheese on my cheeseburger. SportsCenter is always on here and I can have a beer whenever I want. P.S. I sold the cat to buy more wings.” What to order: Build Your Own Burger, Philly Sandwich, Cheese Fries, Chips and “Surprise Us” Who eats there: OSU fans, Addison burger hunters, bar hoppers

‘Real men’ drink ’real coffee’
A
lot of people complain about coffees shops. They whine about how expensive they are, how long they have to wait in line, how they have the unmitigated nerve to put out a tip jar for pouring a cup of ‘go juice’, and so on and so on. Hey, here’s a tip for free…shut the hell up! For me, the real value of coffee shops rank pretty high up there with things that make life a lot better for us guys. They may not be as important as the invention of the thong, casual highheel shoes (‘a*s jackers’) and low-rise women’s jeans, but they’re definitely on the ‘good list’. I mean really, where else can you go for two bucks (and yes, you should put the change in the tip jar), get a good cup of coffee, pull up a comfortable chair and be ringside for what’s usually a pretty impressive parade of ‘local talent’? Personally, I’m a devotee to a coffee
shop right up the road from my house. Maybe it started because it’s just up the road, but whatever the reason, it’s ‘my place’ now. I travel all over the world in my job, and no matter where I go, the first thing I look for when I’m getting comfortable in new environs is my favorite little green and white coffee shop sign. The prices and décor are the same and the atmosphere is familiar… it’s like home. It’s akin to staying in the same hotel chain, or slipping into a favorite pair of ragged old tennis shoes…it just feels right. When I walk into my coffee shop the manager knows my name and remembers what I usually order. I see familiar faces, and even if we really don’t know each other, we still give that little nod of recognition. It’s like ‘Cheers’, where

these days, (yes, it makes me cringe to use the word ‘hip’, but it seems to be the
best description here), there is one thing that ‘real men’ should consider in order to maintain that coveted ‘guy status’. Whether you’re there to mingle with the ladies, brought one of your own, or are just ‘browsing’ and enjoying the view, here you go: Order Real Coffee! That’s right, ‘real men’ should order ‘real coffee’. Cappuccino is probably okay too if you just have to be ‘exotic’, because after all, it’s just really strong coffee, and you can still order it with one strongly delivered word. But unless you’re going to sit with your legs delicately crossed, flip your hair back with one hand and drink with
your dainty little pinky finger extended outward, try to refrain from ordering anything that’s ‘frapped’, ‘upside down’, needs ‘multiple pumps’ or takes longer to order than it does to drink. Really, when you’re standing in line and hear some guy spout off a three-minute drink order with words like ‘frap’ and ‘six-pump’ and ‘extra spice’ and ‘make it upside down’, you can’t tell me that you don’t snicker just a little. Besides, after a few minutes, condensation gathers on those cups and drips on their pants and what guy likes to have people stare and wonder, “What’s that wet spot on his lap?” So find your favorite local spot, pull up a chair, enjoy a good old steaming cup of ‘Joe’, and enjoy being a ‘real man’.

Tupac - Just gave his most amazing
concert performance ever due to the fact that he has been dead since March 1996. The deceased rapper appeared on stage at Coachella via Hologram and amazed the crowd. Snoop and Dr. Dre were also there (in actual form). Virtual Tupac may be now going on tour.
Mel Gibson - Wouldn’t be Mel
Gibson if he weren’t allegedly spewing anti-sematic career sinking missiles out of his pie hole. The Maccabee director was accused of saying some pretty scathing things about the Jewish community. Mel of course denies any wrongdoing.
Marc Anthony - Finally tired of
Jenny from the block. He and his soon-to-be ex-wife Jennifer Lopez are walking down the “irreconcilable differences” Hall of Shame after Marc filed for divorce last week. J-Lo is a three-time inductee to the Hall, while Marc only has two stripes.
Take a moment and think back to junior high. Students walked the halls, gathered in groups to give the rundown of the weekend, and spread rumors like a plague. On bad days, one could see a girl amongst her friends bawling her eyes out, trying to make sense of the slander that was now becoming her label. Sometimes, one would be able to see a boy being pushed around by a group of teens, cruel names and threats thrown in his face while the youth attempted to flee into the safety of a classroom. Situations like these are ignored, repressed from memory. But the reality of this subject is that it is very real and ultimately devastating. Bullying takes place in every school and it is out of hand.
There is no control, no one is stepping in to prevent it, and it is ruining the lives of students. Lee Hirsch’s documentary shines the light on this issue in his documentary Bully. His camera follows the lives of five students as they interact with the teachers and students of the classrooms, allowing audiences to see the fallout of this problem. No punches are pulled, as Hirsch does not edit out any of the profane,
your hands. And you live it day and night. It’s that being in charge of something and working really hard to get it that to me is the reason to do it over and over again. What was your biggest learning curve during the process? When I started the process and finally got to production, I asked all of my filmmaker friends what to expect, and my experience was totally different from everything they said. You just can’t prepare yourself for the experience. If you really knew how challenging and daunting it was going to be, you probably never would have started it. And you spent the past several years working on this. Did you expect it to take as long as it did, and were you ever afraid of how the time away from acting would affect that part of your career?
destructive assaults that occur throughout the film. Viewers are shown every single incident, from beating to name calling. But Hirsch also displays the horrid reality of bullying through his interviews with the parents of bullied children, many who have lost their child to suicide due to bullying. Watching these scenes is as much heartbreaking as it is haunting. This documentary, which is now in wide release, does not have a rating branded on it. While many may find this peculiar, people should not be swayed away from watching this film. Though there are moments of profanity coupled with some hard-to-watch scenes, the film should be viewed by everyone. This is a very real issue with
I was really naïve. I thought every single time we had an actor or some money that meant we were actually going to start shooting, but of course you learn really quickly that it is truly called guerilla filmmaking for a reason, and you’re really in it for the long run because every time money comes in, it just as quickly disappears. Actors come and go as they please it seems, or they get pregnant or whatever natural disasters come their way. So, three years in, I realized this was not going to happen as quickly as I had thought; so, it was about five years to the completion of the film. It was a long journey and not knowing coming back to acting, after leaving the business at a crucial age, I was afraid that when I came back people would be like, “Oh, didn’t she retire?” It was a very scary endeavor all together, but then luckily enough. I just got two big jobs back to back as an actor.
By Ethan Harmon blackstar4556@gmail.com very real consequences. Parents need to watch this documentary to become more aware and understanding of bullying and kids and teens need to watch it to learn how to communicate these problems with the proper individuals. Bullying is becoming an epidemic in the public school system. Bully is a reminder of this. By opening eyes to the problem, the documentary succeeds with its purpose: to make people aware and to inspire action. Everyone everywhere should watch this movie. And after the credits roll, remember to stick up for the “outcast.” Talk with the “new kid.” Be nice and smile. And never be the bully.

What made you decide to step behind the camera and take on the role of director? I’m a total film geek. I grew up in Holland, and my total perception of America was based on films. So, when I moved to New York, it turned out that Al Pacino did not walk around New York City with a gun all the time. Secondly, I find as an actor, you spend very little time acting. It’s always auditioning or trying to get a part; so much of it is in the hands of someone else. The amazing part about this journey I just went through is I had to be the driving force behind all of it. My boyfriend and I came up with the idea together, and then I ended up writing the screenplay. It just became this thing that’s all in

One week down, and I have thoroughly enjoyed festing the days and nights away. One of the many highlights this past week was the Talk Back panel discussion on Actors as Directors that was held at the Nasher Sculpture Center. One of the panelists was actress Famke Janssen. You will surely remember her from her roles in X-Men, Golden Eye (yes the 6-foot-tall stunner was a Bond girl) and the hit FX show Nip Tuck. She has turned her attention to directing, and her directorial debut, Bringing Up Bobby, which she also wrote, screened this week at DIFF – the film stars Milla Jovovich, Bill Pullman, Rory Cochran, Marcia Cross and Spencer List.

QlockTWO W Who needs numbers when you can have words? Designers Biegert & Funk have brought a wearable version of their “time in words” clock with this new wristwatch. The watch has a grid with 110 letters to give you the precise time (man the stopwatch on this thing has got to S-U-C-K). It will be available in fall 2012 and expect it to on the pricey side. If you want to test it out before making the headfirst wallet dive they also have an iPhone app available for .99 cents. .PRICE:$870

I
t’s been no real secret that the convertible hot rod coupes from Jaguar have been some of my favorite cars to drive. Most recently I spent a week behind the wheel of the newest, baddest cat on the block, the XKR-S Convertible. Jaguar released the R-S series to stand above the already improved “R”-designate cars and I would volunteer that the “S” implies spectacular as that is what I found my driving experience in the big kitty to be. While the supercharged 550hp XKR-S in coupe form begs for track time, our tester convertible screamed “Road Trip” – and that is exactly what we did. Big cat daddy, say “Howdy” to the Texas Hill Country. Springtime in Texas means wildflowers and the best place to take in nature’s wonder in the Lone Star State is the Hill Country in Central Texas As incredible as the driving experience was, the roadside wonder was even better, and with the top down all of your senses are sent into overdrive. Of course the king of the roadside attractions here in Texas is our state flower, the bluebonnet (Lupinus Texensis). Roadsides, hillsides and countryside are bathed in blue thanks to proliferation of the spring bloom this year. And it is not alone. Along the way are plenty of other shades of the color wheel for a most spectacular showing. Sure, the XKR-S is still a high-performance car and thanks to the winding, scenic roads of the Hill Country we were able to test out many of the vehicle’s great features for handling, stability and power – lots and lots of passing power when encountering vehicles struggling to keep up. A crack of the whip and this cat makes objects appear very smaller in the rearview mirrors. The Jaguar XKR-S convertible looks very good sitting still such as during the moments when we visited the roadside winery or stopped to take a few snapshots of the natural show.
Thanks to a generous (of sorts) 22 mpg highway we did not have to stop for fuel refills too often, although when we did it was for the higher-priced premium blend which is already well over four-bucks-a-gallon. And we were penalized in the fuel economy category every time we made our big cat roar (somewhere over four grand on the tach the exhaust baffles open up and the engine really howls although it may scare small animals and the faint-of-heart). For as much driving as I did in one day the XKR-S and its luxury sport buckets did not disappoint. This was one of the most comfortable road trips I had ever taken – fatigue in the backside was non-existent which is more of a rarity these days. For a car that has (nearly) everything and carries a price tag of $145,000, I would have expected a couple more amenities – namely satellite radio and ventilated seats. Of the two, we would rarely have heard the radio during our top-down driving but the cooled seats would have been a nice touch in the Texas sun. For those of you who can, get yourselves to the area that is found west of Austin and north of San Antonio in the central part of the Lone Star State and say “Howdy” to the Hill Country. The wildflower season seems to have started early this year and is arriving in full splendor. For the ultimate experience get your hands on a convertible (and don’t forget the sunscreen). Weekdays are best as the weekends are especially crowded. Watch out for the sightseers and cyclists and those folks who insist on standing next to the traffic on a 70 mph country road to take pictures of their child in the flowers.
GameReview of Kinect STAR WARS

The Kinect has been an interesting peripheral to watch. Once dismissed as a Hail Mary by Microsoft to close the gap between itself and Nintendo, it has evolved into an impressive piece of hardware that brings a substantial number of additions to many games (Mass Effect 3 being the most recent). One could only imagine that an IP like Star Wars would bring nothing but joy and awesome when fused with motion control capabilities. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Kinect Star Wars, originally planned for release at the end of 2011, has finally made its way onto home consoles, and the result is disappointing. Half on-rails shooter, half... whatever, the title acts as a frustrating reminder that not all

motion controls are created equal. There are glimmers of excellence when using Force Powers – I felt like quite the Jedi Master when thrusting my hands forward to execute a Force Push. But the majority of the content feels uninspired and clunky, with many of my motions going unrecognized by the Kinect. I have to hand it to the developers: they had a great idea in mind, and plenty of content to work with. That being said, it’s hard to overlook the fundamentally flawed design when playing a game that is supposed to seamlessly integrate the player into the world of the timeless space opera. Kinect Star Wars is certainly worth playing at least once, but paying full retail price for a clunky game may be too much for some consumers.

A Very Short Man A man walks into a bar and says, “Bartender, give me two shots.” Bartender says, “You want them both now or one at a time?” The guy says,” Oh, I want them both now. One’s for me and one’s for this little guy here,” and he pulls a tiny three inch man out of his pocket. The bartender asks “He can drink?” “Oh, sure. He can drink.” So the bartender pours the shots and sure enough, the little guy drinks it all up. “That’s amazing” says the bartender. “What else can he do, can he walk?” The man flicks a quarter down to the end of the bar and says, “Hey, Jake. Go get that.” The little guy runs down to the end of the bar and picks up the quarter. Then he runs back down and gives it to the man. The bartender is in total shock. “That’s amazing” he says, “What else can he do? Does he talk?” The man says “Sure he talks, hey, Jake, tell him about that time we were in Africa and you made fun of that witch doctor’s powers!”
