Al Davis’ impact was undeniable. Love him or hate him, the principal owner of the Oakland Raiders changed the game of football for the better. Growing up in Brooklyn he acquired the street smarts to think outside the lines that would serve him later in life. Davis began his coaching career at Adelphi College as the line coach from 1950 to 1951. His path to professional football would have stops along the way with the U.S. Army team at Ft. Belvoir, The Citadel and finally at the University of Southern California. The American Football League By 1960 Davis would accept a position with the Chargers organization as the offensive line coach. He would gain insight to the game by none other than Sid Gillman. Davis learned the strategy of the West Coast offense while there and recruited top talent to the organization. After the 1962 season, the Raiders hired Davis as their head coach and general manager. Davis at the time was 33 and was the youngest person in professional football to hold the positions. He immediately imported the “vertical” passing game with deep throws downfield. Prior to his arrival the Raiders had won just three of their previous 28 games. During his first year the team had a 10-4 record earning him AFL Coach of the Year honors and for the Raiders, their first winning season. In 1966 Davis was named Commissioner of the American Football League. Immediately he began an aggressive campaign to recruit the NFL’s top talent to AFL contracts. A few months later with the announcement of the merger between the AFL and NFL, Davis resigned. Once A Raider, Always A Raider With Davis back with the Oakland Raiders and as a part owner, the team won the 1967 AFL Championship by defeating the Houston Oilers 40-7 and the right to play the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl II. The Packers under Vince Lombardi defeated the Raiders 33-14. The following two seasons resulted in Western Division titles but losses in the AFL Championship game to the Jets and the Chiefs. These two teams would go on to win Super Bowl titles. From 1967 to 1985 the Oak-
land Raiders won 13 division championships, the aforementioned 1967 AFL Championship, three Super Bowl victories (XI, XV, and XVII) and 15 playoff appearances. His “Commitment to Excellence” is proven. Since the birth of the organization, the Raiders have played in their Conference/League Championship game in every decade. In 1992 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Colorblind Al Davis was a man who did not let race influence his decisions nor interfere with his judgement. In 1963, the Raiders were scheduled to play a preseason game in Mobile, Alabama. Davis refused to allow the Raiders to participate due to the segregation laws at the time and demanded that the game be moved to Oakland. In 1965, the AFL All-Star game was to be played in New Orleans. Once again he refused to let the game be played there because of the racial barriers and had the game moved to Houston. Davis’ forward thinking is also evident within the Raiders organization. In 1979 following the retirement of head coach John Madden, Davis promoted assistant coach Tom Flores to lead the team, making Davis the first ever to hire a Latino head coach. In 1989 Davis promoted offensive line coach and Raider great Art Shell to head coach. Once again making Davis the first NFL owner to make such a move. Lastly Al Davis hired former intern Amy Trask as CEO of the Raiders. Currently she is the only female CEO in the NFL. Davis saw beyond race and gender. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones summed up his feelings for Al Davis by saying, “In my eyes, so much of his legacy will be defined by the loyalty he had for the men who played for the Raiders and the love that they had for him. That was a bond that extended beyond the playing years and lasted lifetimes. His contributions and expertise were inspiring at every level--coach, general manager, owner and commissioner. There was no element of the game of professional football for which Al did not enjoy a thorough and complete level of knowledge and passion.” Thank you Al Davis for making professional football and the NFL better for everyone.

NFL: Eagles vs. Redskins Sun. October 16 – 12:00PM – FedEx Field – FOX
If there ever was a must-win game for the Eagles then this is it. If the Eagles lose this one their season will be pretty much lost with a 1-5 record. A victory helps but it’ll still be a challenge to remain relevant in the competitive NFC East. The Redskins have been a bit of a surprise team with their lone loss to the Cowboys. Look for lots of hard hitting in this one. Follow blitz weekly on twitter and facebook

RANGERS Rains, Relievers, Cruz Spark Lead
you get a chance for a ‘W,’ that’s the most important thing.” The Rangers took command early Saturday on Verlander when a two-run second inning and a leadoff homer by Cruz in the fourth made it 3-0. Shortly thereafter, the skies opened up to begin an evening of uncertainty. When play resumed, Rangers’ starter C.J. Wilson returned but gave up two quick runs before another rain delay. This time neither Wilson nor Verlander came back to
make it a battle of the bullpens. Detroit’s three relievers yielded just one hit in four innings while Texas gave up just one hit in 4 2/3 so the Rangers prevailed because of their early lead. The Texas bullpen of left-handers Mike Gonzalez and Darren Oliver and right-handers Scott Feldman, Mike Adams, Alexi Ogando and Neftali Feliz gave up just five hits and three walks while striking out 16. Most impressive were Ogando with 3 2/3 innings with just one hit over two games and Feldman with 4 1/3 innings with one hit and four strikeouts Monday. He entered the game in the third inning after Raburn’s homer. “I just went in there and just tried to stay ready down there,” Feldman said. “When they called for me, I just really tried to keep the game close. That’s all you can really do in that situation.”

Stars Start Season with Home Win By Tony Barone tbarone@blitzweekly.com
Upcoming Schedule: 10/13 vs Blues 7:30pm 10/15 vs Blue Jackets 7:00pm 10/18 @ Blue Jackets 6:00pm
It never rains during baseball season in North Texas, the local team has one of the worst bullpens in the American League and nobody hits a grand slam to end a postseason game. Thanks to the opposite happening in all three areas, the Texas Rangers won the first two games of the 2011 American League Championship Series at home against the Detroit Tigers. That meant they were halfway to another World Series appearance and guaranteed themselves more action at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Even if Texas loses three times this week in Detroit, they’ll be able to win this series at home this weekend. Win two in the Motor City and the Rangers will begin the World Series at Milwaukee or St. Louis next Wednesday and be home the following weekend. “It’s been a great two games,” Tiger Manager Jim Leyland told mlb. com. “It didn’t go the right way, obviously. They earned it and we didn’t quite get it done. We haven’t been able to come up with any big hits. That’s really hard.” That’s because the Rangers’ bullpen held Detroit scoreless for 12 2/3 innings and Nelson Cruz hit three home runs including a grand slam to end Game 2. Plus, two rain delays Saturday night limited Cy Young Award favorite Justin Verlander to four innings in Game 1. With wet conditions continuing Sunday morning and the threat of more rain that night, Game 2 was postponed until Monday. Thanks to the bullpen and Cruz, the Rangers are looking good. “This was an instant classic,” said Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler. “Both teams played well, both pitching staffs did an unbelievable job, both teams played great defense. It was just an incredible baseball game.” Texas took the early lead Monday with two runs in the first inning. But a three-run home run by Ryan Raburn in the third inning off Derek Holland erased that. A solo homer by Cruz in the seventh tied the game and after being hit in the wrist and chest in the ninth, he ended the marathon with a blast to left field off Detroit reliever Ryan Perry in the 11th inning of a 7-3 win. It was the first official walk-off grand slam in post-season history. Robin Ventura of the New York Mets hit a bases-loaded home run to win a 1999 National League Championship Series game against Atlanta but never made it to second base and was credited with a single. “It’s special, you know,” Cruz said. “When

STARS Prior to the opening game of the season at the American Airlines Center, Dallas Stars fans were treated to a video showing highlights of the Stars 17 seasons in Dallas. Among the
scenes were two big moments in the 19981999 season. First was Darien Hatcher’s jaw breaking check to Jeremy Roenick in retaliation for an injury he had caused to Mike Modano, which caused Roenick to lose several teeth. And of course the most memorable moment in Stars history when Bret Hull tipped the puck into the net against the Buffalo Sabres to bring the Stanley Cup to Dallas. The beginning of season 18 saw Kari Lehtonen assure a successful NHL debut for new Dallas Stars coach Glen Gulutzan. Lehtonen stopped 37 shots, Alex Goligoski and Jamie Benn scored second-period goals, and the Stars held on for a 2-1 decision over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night in the opener for both teams. “He had a great performance,” Gulutzan said about Lehtonen. “I thought he was the difference. ... Kari was our backbone tonight.” Gulutzan was promoted over the summer by general manager Joe Nieuwendyk from the Stars’ AHL affiliate to succeed Marc Crawford, who was fired at the end of last season after the team missed the playoffs for a third straight season. “It’s a relief,” Gulutzan said. “Now I know I can win one.” Lehtonen was at his best in the second period, making a series of sliding saves while Chicago built a 22-12 shots advantage, a total pumped up by three power plays. “All the penalties seemed to be against us,” Lehtonen said. “It was a tough task there, but the penalty killing unit took most of the crazy chances away. It was a great battle. I was able to see the puck well tonight.”

Tom Seaver was in town recently for the PwC SMU Athletic Forum Luncheon. “Tom Terrific” pitched from 1967-1986 for four MLB teams (Mets, Reds, White Sox and Red Sox). He won the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 1967, as well as, three NL Cy Young Awards. The Hall of Famer compiled 311 wins, 3,640 strikeouts, 61 shutouts and a 2.86 ERA. Seaver is one of only two Met players to have his jersey number retired by the team. Perhaps most memorably he and Nolan Ryan along with Jerry Koosman and Gary Gentry won it all in 1969 for the “Miracle Mets”. Have you been keeping up with what the Rangers have done the last few years? Oh yeah, absolutely with Nolan and the friendship we had and all that stuff. When we see each other, it makes me ecstatic with happiness for Nolan. I’m not surprised at all. Once he turned the corner and his real inner core work ethic started, I’m not surprised a bit, not one iota. I think he was intimidated with a couple of things real early in New York, one of them being New York. Potentially not having a college education, that’s so far in the rearview mirror it’s not even close. Once the organization, the Angels and I give them huge credit for this, they gave him the ball. With a talent like Nolan, I threw hard, Koosman threw hard and Gentry threw hard. We were all hard throwers and then there was Nolan. It was readily perceivable. Finally, when he learned there’s more to it than throwing and it is an art form called pitching, it was lights out. Just his work ethic, you hear it all the time, etc. It’s transferred right to what he’s doing now. I don’t follow the game all that much. I follow box scores and etcetera, but I don’t watch the game. Box scores, there is a volume of information in most box scores from a baseball standpoint and I’m delighted for him. He loves it. He’s got the same work ethic now as when he landed with the Angels. I don’t think I’ve ever met a better guy than Nolan. He’s real. He’s got a far better sense of humor than I think he ever lets on. But I don’t see him
now other than the Hall of Fame, but he has a very infectious laugh. It’s just wonderful to see. It’s one of those great success stories and it just happens to be in baseball.
smarter than he is because of the lack of college education. Once it got out, he’s got PhDs. Good friend, sincere, hard working, these are all wonderful attributes that he has. I’m not surprised.
Are you surprised the Rangers have become so pitching-oriented under Nolan Ryan’s watch? No, not at all. With Nolan, he knows. He’s old school in a sense that it’s pitching and defense. Pitching and defense keeps you in every game. You can win every game by one run if you don’t give any away if you pitch and defend well. That makes every at-bat important. If I get the runner over there, then we can win as opposed to if I can hit a three-run home run, we win. If I move the runner a base, it’s a big part of it, but you’ve got to have pitching to be able to do that. You’ve got to have pitching that you trust to get in there and pitch late into the game. I haven’t talked to him about pitch counts and all this stuff, but I can presume what he would be thinking. Pitch counts are crazy, right? They’re absurd. I had a pitch count. Under Gil Hodges, I had a pitch count. It was my pitch count. I determined where I was beginning to go downhill and it’s about 135 pitches. It wasn’t computer driven but it was an honest pitch count number for me as a general rule. Koosman was probably 145 pitches, the big left-handed German. Nolan was probably 155. Look at his mechanics though. Look at the way he’s built. Look at the size of his rear end, thighs, etc. That’s why and whatever the gene pool is, I would guess that it was 150 and he might say 175. I think he’s brought that philosophy forward.
Do you have any memories of pitching here in Arlington? Not really, no not much. I don’t know if I pitched here once or twice. I don’t remember. I wish I had something, a two-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts, but I was at 41-years-old. I was at the end physically and emotionally by that point.
What qualities would you have seen in Nolan that might have made you think he’d be an effective leader of a baseball organization? He had a great sense of humor. I’m not being facetious. Nolan was very reserved, but once you became his friend, you learned about the person. He had a great sense of humor and he never showed that. And I don’t blame him, a young kid from Texas to New York, it’s the other end of the spectrum. Very sensitive and a hell of a lot smarter than he thought he was. I thought he was or is a hell of a lot
Talk about your 300th win and the circumstances surrounding that. Just being in New York, it was perfect theater. It was great theater and by the time you’re in your 19th or 20th year, if you haven’t controlled your emotions by that standpoint, you’re not going to because that’s part of the discipline of consistency on the mound, that you go in there with the same kind of physical, mental, inspirational qualities that give you consistency. You don’t get too high. You don’t get too low. You don’t let the venue bother you, etc. To give you an idea of what pitching is about, I won No. 299 in Boston. I was ahead 5-2 or 4-2 or something like that and I went to the bottom of the ninth inning. Everybody on my ballclub knew that I’d be pitching for 300. We gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth, so I’m done. I’ve got 135 pitches and I’m done. What did my ballclub do? Scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning, closer came in and shut it down. I never saw a happier group of guys in my life, brought tears to my eyes. Coming down that runway in that old ballpark high fiving, etc. and they know. It’s the ride. You remember those specific pitches and you remember the theater, the noise. You take it all away and then you’ve got something. It’s part of the theater.” What about your no-hitter? I got one. I’m only six behind him [Ryan]. Let’s don’t make a big deal out of this. I’m only behind him by 1,500 strikeouts. Follow blitz weekly on twitter and facebook

Currently sitting at 6-0 the Tigers have dismantled every opponent this season with double digit victories. Only the season opener against Oregon did they find themselves in a bit of fight and that was until halftime. Prior to the season there were concerns that the off field distractions might be too much for the team to handle, but apparently the Tigers stayed focused and on track. The

Things could not be better for the Mustangs after their enormous upset win in Ft. Worth over TCU. The 4-1 record is the best start for the
target is on their back to prove that they are the best team in the country as they face the Tennessee Volunteers. Senior QB Jarrett Lee has been the life saver for the LSU Tigers. He has replaced Jordan Jefferson as the helmsman and hasn’t looked back. Lee isn’t a threat to run, but his experience and accurate passing allows the team to move the ball efficiently. Through six games he has only one interception and eight touchdown strikes. The ground and pound duties are split between Spencer Ware and Michael Ford. Between the two they have over 850 yards on the ground and 11 TDs. Rueben Randle has been the most consistent of the receivers hauling in 23 passes for 446 yards and four TDs. Odell Beckham remains a versatile threat opposite of Randle. The defense has continued to flourish under the tutelage of DC John Chavis. The aggressive play has paid off well. The linebackers pack plenty of firepower. They’ll be on the hunt this Saturday. The Tennessee Volunteers are the sacrificial lamb in this game. They’ll be without starting QB Tyler Bray who fractured his thumb in last week’s loss to Georgia. That means Matt Simms will have to lead the team. Don’t be surprised if he wilts under pressure. RB Tauren Poole might not play due to a hamstring injury. Marlin Lane will handle the rushing duties. WR Da’rick Rogers has speed but won’t do much on Saturday. It’ll be a long day for the Volunteer defense and special teams.
ponies since 1986. It all adds up to complete what June Jones was hired to do four years ago. Make SMU a legitimate football program again, and he has. With the signature win that the program needed to complete their turnaround behind them, SMU will look to avoid the proverbial letdown factor and exact some revenge this Saturday at Ford Stadium against UCF. SMU lost to the Knights 17-7 last season in the Conference USA Championship game. In fact, the Mustangs have yet to beat Central Florida in the three attempts since the schools started to play each other in 2007. The Knights come to Dallas looking for their first road win of the season. UCF beat Marshall 16-6 in a torrential downpour last Saturday to stay unbeaten at home but they have fallen short to Florida International and BYU on the road. Central Florida Head Coach George O’Leary’s team plays tremendous pass defense, so this will be a good test for SMU’s passing offense. The Knights are only giving up 100 yards passing per game to opponents thus far and have yet to yield a passing touchdown. They are stout against the run as well allowing less than 80 yards per game on the ground. In their three wins the Knights have given up a paltry nine points. The defense is lead by linebackers Josh Linam and Jonathan Davis who have combined for 49 tackles (12 for loss), four sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. The Mustangs come in averaging over 325 yards per game through the air and 120 yards per game on the ground. Wide Receiver Darius Johnson is coming off C-USA and ESPN.com player of the week honors with his performance against TCU. He has accounted for four of the Mustangs seven passing touchdowns this year.

North Texas tied up their conference record to 1-1 with a 31-17 win over Florida Atlantic Saturday night. Special teams helped create a score, defense scored two, and the offense scored a couple. Good game again for three quarters, problems continue to arise within the last 15 minutes. Not to take away from the victory but these late mental let downs will hurt you in the end. FAU not only got out played, they gave several gifts to UNT which ensured the Mean Green’s second win at Apogee. QB Thompson was back, Dunbar added to his career stats and TE Power has started to make his presence known. UNT will face the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns on Saturday. A team that after a season opening loss to Oklahoma State has reeled off five consecutive victories. They lead the Sun Belt
standings with a 3-0 record. The Cajuns put up lots of points, though this week they could be without starting QB Blaine Gautier who left last week’s game against Troy with an ankle sprain. WR Javone Lawson leads the team in yardage, average and TDs. RB Alonzo Harris has stepped up to lead the team in rushing attempts and yardage. The Cajuns defense is thin up front and will likely present several different looks to mask their deficiencies. This could be a true pivotal point for the Mean Green to move into the top of the conference standings or settle in the cellar. Coach McCarney must provide a better game plan against the Cajuns or this UNT offense is going to stall faster than an old Buick. When you possess a Doak Walker candidate (Dunbar) he will definitely be the focus of every team you face. Thompson has the ability to spread the ball around to the outside with Chancellor, Hamilton and Power as the receiving corps. This can and will produce yardage and open some running lanes for Dunbar. This will be a four quarter game, the defense must show up and continue the pressure they apply for the first three quarters. Coach McCarney has the players, and the players have the talent. Former Southwest Conference and current Big 12 Conference foes match up for the possible last chapter of the Battle of the Brazos when Texas A&M hosts Baylor. The series debuted in 1899 with the Aggies holding a 67-31 lead over the Bears with nine ties thrown in for good measure. The history of the rivalry is quite storied. From the 1926 Baylor homecoming game in which a brawl broke out resulting in the death of Texas A&M
student Lt. Charles Sessums to the time the Aggies stole the Baylor mascot. It seems that pranks and mayhem will follow the Aggies this season (see Texas Tech game). Baylor has surprised many in the college football world with their 4-1 record which could easily be 5-0 if not for a hiccup at Kansas State. Robert Griffin III continues to impress with his Heisman campaign numbers. He has accounted for 21 of Baylor’s touchdowns this season through the air or on the ground. This dual threat quarterback is explosive and experienced. To keep the Aggie defense honest look for workhorse Terrance Ganaway to carry the load on the ground. He is coming off of a 200-yard performance against Iowa State. WR Kendall Wright is the “go to” receiver for RGIII. He leads the team in receptions, yardage and touchdowns. Their defense isn’t a strong point. They’ll need a bend but don’t break approach to help the Bears win. For Texas A&M this rivalry game is about building on last week’s 45-40 win over Texas Tech. Senior QB Ryan Tannehill continues to lead the team by scoring through the air and on the ground as well. His decision making must improve as he has thrown interceptions in three of five games this season. The running back tandem of Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael will keep the Bear defense on its toes. Together they have almost a 1,000 yards and have 13 touchdowns. Ryan Swope continues to be Tannehill’s favorite receiver. Jeff Fuller who suffered a concussion against Texas Tech has to be careful. The A&M defense is stout against the run, but their secondary is susceptible to giving up long pass plays. Expect another shoot out and a memorable game in this one. BAYLOR vs. #21 TEXAS A&M SAT. COWBOYS On The Road Again
By Jay Betsill Twitter @thefamousjay
While it’s is hard to fathom that the 2011 NFL season is already a quarter of the way through, the Dallas Cowboys have been on enough emotional rollercoaster rides for an entire season. Opening night on the road against the New York Jets on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 before the mostwatched NBC Sunday Night Football game in history saw the Cowboys biggest 4th quarter collapse in team history. And just when you thought the naysayers and second-guessers were ready to run starting quarterback Tony Romo out of DFW, he orchestrated a heroic 27-24 comeback -- with what would turn out to be a punctured lung -- on the road in San Francisco against the 49ers.
Romo followed that up by playing injured against the Washington Redskins at the home opener at Cowboys Stadium on Monday Night Football and saw rookie kicker Dan Bailey drill six field goals en route to an 18-16 victory. Now riding high, Romo lead the Cowboys to a 27-3 advantage over the undefeated Detroit Lions before the biggest collapse in team history saw the Lions leave Arlington with a 34-30 victory. Adding insult to injury, it was former Cowboys castoff Bobby Carpenter who made a leaping interception and a weaving 35-yard return for a touchdown to swing the momentum in Detroit’s favor. The Cowboys are coming off their bye week and getting ready to travel up to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro to do battle with the New England Patriots. The bye could not have come at a better time for the banged-up players including Miles Austin, Gerald Sensabaugh, Dez Brynat, Felix Jones, Jason Hatcher and Tony Romo. Austin, who has not played since injuring his hamstring in the Visit us online at www.Blitzweekly.com

comeback against the 49ers, has been missed as the receiving corps has been decimated following the off-season departure of veterans Roy Williams and Sam Hurd and the early season injuries. New England is coming off their 30-21 victory over their AFC East rival New York Jets. The Patriots (4-1) never trailed against New York and won their 19th straight regular-season game at home. The Jets (2-3) lost their third consecutive contest and are one Cowboys collapse away from being 1-4. New England had allowed an average of
477.5 yards, the most in the league before holding the Jets to 255 yards. Patriots running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for a career-high 136 yards and two touchdowns as New England currently has 13 straight regular-season games of at least 30 points. They are now one game short of the all-time record established by the St. Louis Rams in 1999-2000. On paper the Patriots should win this game in a cakewalk. But when you factor in that Dallas should have probably lost the two games they won and won the two games they lost, anything can happen in today’s NFL. And let’s not discount the fact that current Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was Cleveland’s defensive boss in 2010 when the Browns defeated the Patriots 34-14. Since Tom Brady, Wes Welker and company have the NFL’s top offense, it may take some “Ryan magic” if the Cowboys hope to improve to 3-2.

When you first see the trailer to REAL STEEL, you kind of think, hmmm....ROCKY meets THE TERMINATOR, or at least I did, but what I discovered was a great movie about the human and robotic spirit, that was all heart. I sat down with Hugh Jackman who stars in the film, set in the not-so distant future, where humanoid robots duke it out in the boxing ring.
Tell me about this phenomenon of robot boxing that is the catalyst of REAL STEEL. Robots have got to the level of sophistication where they can now fight in the ring. It is the biggest sport in the world. There’s money, there’s sponsorship, everybody all around the world is into this. They have playing cards, kids are into it, adults, men and women, everybody, and all these robots have different personas, different nicknames, and you have your favorites. Anyway, it’s big.
And how does your character fit into all this? In this world there is my character, Charlie Kenton who is an owner of robots. He is in the fight game, the robot fighting game and not very successful at it. In fact, he’s doing everything he can trying to eke out a living at it and not being very successful doing that. Most of the time, he spends his life not in the sanctioned big world robot boxing league tournaments, but in the underworld, illegal gambling, small time. He’s on the run from people he owes money too. He’s on the bottom of his life, on the bottom rung in every way.
But then Charlie and his son find a robot that changes all that. They find a robot in a junk yard called Atom. The kid really believes in this robot. He thinks this robot saved his life. He thinks this robot is somehow magical and contains some powers. Charlie, who’s been in this world, is very much a realist and a cynic and kind of pooh poohs the whole thing, but this robot does in fact turn out to be something special.
How many robots are there in REAL STEEL? We have 19 robots each with great personality, each one has their own persona. There’s a whole mystique, a whole kind of story behind them, each one is going to appeal to someone different. I can tell you right now, we have a kind of hero robot which everyone will love, but there are different sub-groups. Some will like Midas with the kind of down and dirty mohawk. Some will like Noisy Boy, or Ambush or Zeus. They all have their own personality, and people are gonna like different ones.
And you all worked with real robots. What was that experience like for you as an actor? Having the real robot for the actor makes a huge difference. When I first saw those real robots being puppeteered by those genius puppeteers, and they were moving, I instantly turned into a ten-year-old standing next to a ten-year-old [referencing his young co-star Dakota Goyo who plays his son in the movie]. We both had the same looks on our faces. You can’t help but be drawn into the magic. I don’t care who you are as an actor having that there makes a huge difference.
The ten-year-old you mentioned is the wonderful young actor Dakota Goyo. He plays your son in the movie. What was it about him that made him the perfect one for this part? Dakota came in and Shawn [director Shawn Levy] and I were really taken back. There’s something very soulful about him. Without him doing anything, the camera just goes right into his soul. He allows the camera inside, which for a kid of that age is very, very rare.
You also had one heck of a mentor on set to help you with your boxing moves. Shawn said to me, “Listen we’re going to do some boxing. I want you to look like a boxer. We have those scenes where you need to do that, and it’s really important that people believe you’re a boxer.” I said, “Absolutely.” So he says, “I was thinking of bringing in Sugar Ray [Leonard] to work with you.” And I was like, “I think that might work!” I mean Sugar Ray is one of the greats of all times. I’m a huge fan of his. I was a little intimidated meeting him at first particularly getting into the ring with him. I thought, “I’m just gonna watch.”
The one thing that resonates throughout this film, for me at least, is heart. How does your character change from the beginning of the film to the end, and what do you believe is his most redeeming quality by the end? Charlie has made a lot of sacrifices, and I think at the beginning of this movie he feels that not all of them are worth it, and he’s made some mistakes. Now, he has a second chance, and he’s going for it, but he’s not going to make the same mistakes again of sacrificing the wrong thing. This is one family friendly movie that will definitely knock you out, and you can check it out tonight! REAL STEEL is open in theaters nationwide. The film is rated PG-13 for some violence, intense action and brief language.

anly men wear scarves – just ask the Romans. In Ancient Rome, scarves were originally worn by men and used as sweat cloths on hot summer days. Soon after, women followed suit and began experimenting with materials. Scarves were also used to identify the rank of Chinese warriors and Croatian soldiers around the 17th century. Officers wore silk scarves, while others were issued cotton scarves. It wasn’t until the 19th century that scarves became a widespread fashion accessory for both sexes. For some, the trend has yet to catch on. Since men typically value function over style, scarves aren’t their go-to accessories. Not to mention, there are a million different ways to wear one. Traditional, knotted, flipped, double flipped, draped. Who has time to learn all those tricks? But, a good scarf adds balance to your wardrobe and reduces the wind-chill on those frigid winter days. A group of teenagers head out into the woods to party and have the times of their lives, but find themselves hunted by sadistic hillbilly killers. That sounds like your typical teenage horror movie, but Tucker & Dale vs Evil is not what you’d call “typical.” Turning the genre on its head, the movie follows two Appalachian natives Tucker (Alan Tudyck) and Dale (Tyler Labine) into the woods to fix Tucker’s recently purchased vacation home. They cross paths with said teenagers, saving one’s life after she nearly drowns. The rest of the teenagers think they have kidnapped her, and mount a rescue attempt that continually goes awry and paints Tucker and Dale as sadistic killers when in reality they just have the worst luck in the world. At its core, Tucker & Dale vs Evil relies on a simple joke: the teenagers try to kill them, but end up brutally killing themselves by accident in over the top ways. As an example, one of the teenagers goes to the house to retrieve the girl, but is chased away by a chainsaw wielding Tucker, who accidentally cuts into a bee’s nest. The teenager then proceeds to impale himself on a tree branch, making it look like he was brutally massacred. Scenes like this fuel the brunt of the comedy in the movie, and it’s very well executed if a bit monotonous at times. Tudyck and Labine also provide a good amount of the comedy themselves by riffing off of one another. They make a great comedy duo; Tucker being the smart one and Dale being the lovable dolt. Labine is definitely the more interesting of the two though, and in my humble (but RIGHT!) opinion, he delivers the best performance of his movie career. For those who used to watch Reaper on the CW, his excellence will be of no surprise to you. Tucker & Dale vs Evil does begin to wear out its welcome towards the end, resulting in a plot twist that makes sense, but feels wholly unnecessary. It does make a good statement about slasher flicks. Be that as it may, in the grand scheme of things the movie didn’t need to go down that road. The romance between Dale and the girl they rescued was very sweet, but felt like added padding to me. All in all, these little nitpicks I have with the movie don’t negate that Tucker & Dale vs Evil is one of the best horror comedies out there, filled with enough gore to satisfy horror fans and enough clever and humorous moments to satisfy other moviegoers. This is definitely a movie worth throwing into your Halloween mix. Tucker & Dale vs Evil is currently playing in limited release around the DFW area, but you can rent it on Demand (Amazon, Itunes, Cable) if you don’t want to trek out to see it.

Getting to the Core: Can Apple’s iTunes Continue to Exist in a “Free Music” World?
Spring Awakening at Addison’s WaterTower Theater By Jack E. Jett jjett@blitzweekly.com
Since its inception in the 1970’s, technological super-brand Apple has rapidly taken over the planet. As of May 2010, it ranked higher in value than both Microsoft and Intel combined, at $222 billion. That same year, Apple’s iTunes Store surpassed the 20 billion download mark, but in today’s music consumer industry, where streaming programs such as Spotify and Pandora Radio, as well as illegal downloading arenas have made a serious dent in corporate record sales, how can the world’s top ranking music downloading software measure up? We know how iTunes works: enter in your credit card information, and you can download all the music, plus videos, audiobooks, movies, and podcasts you want, usually for .99 a download. Songs are then housed in your iTunes library, and can be transferred onto any Apple device, or any other that accepts non-traditional “AAC” type files, something most nonApple music players do not. This, then, is iTunes largest pitfall (and simultaneously its greatest work of genius): if you don’t own or use Apple products, you can’t get full use of its services. Another downside: unlike Amazon where you have the option to enroll in a plan with a single payment and a specific number of downloads, with iTunes, customers pay for every purchase. In steps Pandora, and Swedish newcomer Spotify. With both these online streaming programs, consumers have access to free music, and with an Internet connection, you can pull and play songs in a radio setup, or save them to a playlist. You can even share files
through Facebook and Twitter. Helpful “Like” and “Dislike” buttons make it easy to customize the stations you create with music specific to your taste. With Spotify’s Premium program (at a cost of $4.99), you can even download a smartphone app, with access to these same playlists from your phone, even when offline. It’s modern-day music “ownership:” all of the listening with none--or at least much less--of the paying. While Apple has, for the time being, opted against offering plans to its personal iTunes customers, it did announce in February that it would offer its App providers the opportunity to subscribe to Apple itself, so consumers can purchase music and other services through the App’s music sites for a set fee. Some would look at this service as sabotage to the brand’s multi-million-dollar competition; Apple diehards, however, might say this reflects part of what founder Steve Jobs, whose battle with pancreatic cancer ended October 5th, believed would be most fair in consideration of his app-obsessed consumers. In fact, along with promptness, class, and a certain deserved sense of elitism, fairness to its customers is one thing Apple Computing does better than most any other technological brand on the market. In the meantime, it doesn’t look like Apple is worried about making ends meet; developers have even announced that we can expect the iPad 3 to be released sometime in 2012. When it comes to music, the brand will continue to come up with innovative ways to keep its headway above water. As for the rest of us, we can continue to put our trust, and our money, into its concrete and steady machine. Or not. They don’t need to worry much either way.

Let’s Talk About SEX The WaterTower Theatre of Addison is starting out their new season with an awakening, a Spring Awakening. A 2007 Tony Awardwinning alternative rock musical set in 1891, the show’s theme is of considerable relevance in today’s sexually judgmental society. The plot is based on the concept that if you don’t talk to your children about sex they will find out about it one way or another; i.e., sexual urges do not wait until after the last bit of rice has been thrown at a wedding. With songs penned by 90’s pop singer Duncan Sheik and a book by Steven Sater, Spring Awakening is based on a play written by the late 19th Century German satirist Frederick Wedekind. Awakening is a great show for anyone between the ages of 20 and 60, and for the children – or grandchildren - of beatniks, hippies and bohemians. Think of it as Mary Poppins on crack. Jonathan W. Gilland (Melchior) and Erica Harte (Wendla) provided performances so real that I began to feel like a voyeur more than a theatre patron. I recently saw these two play opposite each other in the Uptown Theater production of Next To Normal, and it would seem that the pair are rapidly becoming the Sonny & Cher of our local theatre scene. Kayla Carlyle (Ilse) played the bohemian chick so well that I could almost smell her Patchouli oil. Clay Wheeler (Georg) was
my favorite as the schoolboy attracted to his piano teacher’s massive breasts. His handsome face and beautiful voice made him a delight to watch. We follow the young characters as they struggle through serious life issues. It is seldom that they find comfort or understanding from their parents; rather, they mostly find love and compassion from one another. I had expected the choreography to be more experimental and alternative, but it was more like watching musical chairs, with Director Terry Martin’s actors “working” every inch of the production’s small in-the-round set. This show is proof of Dallas’ bottomless talent pool. From fifteen year-old Ruby Westerfall - the youngest actress ever cast in a production of Spring Awakening - to Steven Pounders and Lulu Ward, who play all of the adult characters, the talented ensemble team really gives us their best. I would suggest getting to the theatre early enough to read some background on the show, as it can be bit hard to follow in the beginning. Don’t be shocked to discover that the person sitting next to you is a member of the cast.

And that Downshift Rev Matching in manual sport mode is just a blast to play with. The IPL G Coupe is priced just a tick below 50 grand. Expect more information on the new 2013 IPL G Convertible, which is set to arrive in spring, 2012, during the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

creasingly boring combat mechanics in the form of the all-new “bombcrafting” system. Judging by the recently released trailers Ezio is seriously prepared to lay waste to any and all enemies that stand in his way. And while I will be among the first to see how this game really measures up, I also know that designer Alexandre Amancio is saddled with the task of reinventing the wheel. Sure the game will be cool visually. Sure it will have an excellent story line and compelling voice work, but this isn’t a movie and we’ve seen

Assassin’s Creed Revelations With the November release of part four of the AC Epic looming over, here’s what we know for sure: Ezio’s character will be departing along with the rest of the Creed franchise. Ubisoft is toying with the idea of taking some time off to re-boot the series and regain the luster of past installments. But before they go, they are introducing a tweak to the in-
this show before. We have to be wowed all over again. Complete player customization in weapons and appearance along with new multiplayer options and modes is definitely a step in the right direction. A new island of Rhodes map is expected. And the addition of 300 bomb variations paired with a 30 percent faster hookblade should at least keep things interesting as Ezio, Altaïr, and Desmond wave goodbye…at least for now.

AN ATTITUDE FOR WAR In much of the modern world, a woman driving a car usually suffers no more than a speeding ticket from traffic enforcers. That is unless she’s driving in a country led by Muslim law. Example: In September 2001, Saudi Arabia King Abdullah, while promising to protect women’s rights to vote beginning in 2015, allowed female Shaima Jastaina to be sentenced to ten lashes with a heavy strap, ‘guilty’ of driving a car.
The Stick Up A bartender is getting ready to close for the night when a robber bursts in and pulls a gun. “This is a stickup!” He yells. “Put all your dough in a bag!” “Don’t shoot,” pleads the barkeep. “I’ll do whatever you say!” The bartender stuffs all the money into a bag and hands it over. The crook snatches it and then puts the gun to the bartender’s head and says, “All right, now give me a blow job!” “Anything!” cries the bartender. “Just don’t shoot!” The bartender gets on his knees and starts blowing the guy. After a few minutes, the robber gets so excited he drops his gun. The bartender picks the gun up off the floor and hands it back to the robber. “Hold the gun, damn it,” he says. “One of my friends might walk in!”

Political Correctness Sucks!
Merlin’s Ale Brewed by: Broughton Ales Ltd. ABV: 4.20% This hazy golden colored ale will do you justice on a Friday night. The aroma is very light with a hint of hops. The taste is very enjoyable but not overwhelming by any means. This brew is smooth throughout, and there are not pronounced peaks and valleys of flavor. Drinks well and is a good session brew! Diesel Unlimited d.5 Robusto Wrapper: Brazil Binder: Dominican Filler: Dominican Strength: Full The Diesel Unlimited is the latest of three cigars created by masterblender AJ Fernandez. This cigar was recently released during the 2010 IPCPR in New Orleans. This is one of the best looking cigars and has a nutty flavor. The smoke is very aromatic.

There are a million Aggie jokes, and I admit, I’ve laughed at a few. But after seeing what an Aggie wrote to win a contest for the most appropriate definition of a contemporary term, I’m changing my tune. This guy’s a freakin’ genius. He wrote: “Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.” What else can I say, but “Go Aggies!” I’m sick and tired of all this politically correct nonsense. It’s ridiculous! Every time you turn around, some mamby-pamby group is coming up with something else that needs to be changed so we don’t hurt somebody’s feelings. Hey! Wake up! Sometimes it’s good to have your feelings hurt a little so you get the point and understand it’s time to

make some positive changes. I believe it’s the minority that sits around and comes up with this crap and it’s probably because they don’t have any friends or anything else to do but think of ways to irritate those of us that have a real life. Well, the majority of us better wake up and stand up or we’ll all be eating bean curd sandwiches and relegated to telling a sexy woman, “You look very aesthetically appropriate today,” instead of, “Damn woman…you’re HOT!” Here are a few politically correct idiocies that make my blood boil: 1) Airport Profiling: If you’re going to dress like the Uni-Bomber, then you should expect to get your butt drug out of line and stripped searched and have the metal detector run through your three-foot beard. If it makes the rest of us feel a little more secure, then I don’t care if it does offend your delicate sensibilities. I think we’ve earned the right in this country to be a little more vigilant. If you’re too sensitive for that, then buy a one-way ticket to someplace else and just stay there. We won’t miss you.
2) Scoreless Kid’s Games: What idiot came up with the idea not to keep score at a kid’s ball game? Kids need to know who lost so they can try harder next time. They need to learn good sportsmanship and shake the winner’s hand and say, “Good game,” because it sucks to have to congratulate somebody that beat you. That helps motivate them to try harder next time. And if they win, they need to learn the feeling of victory. That’s right, even if they’re kids. 3) Christmas-Bashers: I say, “Merry Christmas,” not “Happy Holidays.” And yeah, I like Santa and Rudolph and candy canes and manger scenes and it’s not because I’m putting down someone else’s culture or religion, but because I’m proud of mine. If you sneeze, I’ll say, “God Bless You.” And if you think it’s smart to criticize me for that, I hope you get a blessing from somewhere, because you’ll need it when I jam my boot up your rear end. 4) Stupid Titles: You’re not ‘Aesthetically Challenged’; you’re ugly. You’re not ‘Morally Challenged’; you’re a slut. And if you expect me to pat you on the back and ask, “Calorie Challenged?”, then you better bring a big bag of cookies because it’s going to be a long wait. You’re fat! Sugarcoating things make people feel good about their shortcomings. So get off your fat, ugly butt and take control of your own life, instead of trying ram your political correctness down my throat. I’ve had enough of it already!
